How to make a sheath for a knife from leather or wood with your own hands. Making a scabbard from leather. Step by step guide. How to make a leather sheath with your own hands at home DIY sheath from small pieces of leather

Every survivalist, lover of outdoor activities, fishing, hunting or just tourism has a favorite work knife. It is good if the knife comes with a good shop scabbard that meets the requirements for them. And what to do for those who, or bought, but without a scabbard, or the scabbard turned out to be a "Chinese" fiction ... Of course - to make a scabbard for your favorite knife with your own hands. I already wrote how to make a scabbard from or from, it's time to tell how to make simple do-it-yourself leather scabbard.

I note right away that step-by-step instruction belongs to Viktor Vlasenko. (vlasenko.ru)
Notes or before you start making the scabbard:
1. The handle of the knife should be impregnated with a water-repellent compound (the handle should not be afraid of moisture).
2. To make a leather sheath with your own hands, you need a hard liner. Alternatively, it can be made of cotton fabric impregnated with epoxy resin, molded directly on the blade of a knife, covered with a brush with molten stearin or paraffin. To protect the wooden handle from epoxy, you can wrap it all up, including the bolster, with masking tape (masking tape is impregnated with wax). Cut off the protruding masking tape along the outer edge of the bolster ... epoxy resin). Next, cover the blade and a section of masking tape at the bolster with paraffin or stearin melted in a "water bath". Then we wrap it with a cotton cloth soaked in epoxy resin ... The fabric is “soaked” in strips in epoxy resin and wound around the knife blade. Instead of cotton cloth, you can use a medical bandage, gauze, but in this case, the liner will be more fragile. After polymerization of the epoxy resin, the liner blank is boiled in boiling water to free it from stearin and mechanically processed to the required external dimension... A hole is made in the liner from the end to drain moisture and, if desired, several holes on the sides to facilitate drying of the skin ...

We believe that we have already made the insert, selected a suitable piece of leather and are ready to start making the scabbard ...

Soak the skin for 1 - 2 minutes in warm water. Then we place the knife with the insert on the center of the workpiece. (If you feel sorry for a piece of wood or a blade, you can wrap them in plastic).

We wrap a knife with an insert in wet leather and fix the skin from the side of the future seam using clerical clips.

We leave our construction in a warm place until the skin is completely dry ...

After the skin dries up, we get a molded leather scabbard blank with which you can already work comfortably ...

Let's start sewing! We will sew in two needles. For sewing, we need an awl, a pair of needles, pliers and thread.

We make a couple of holes at the end of the future scabbard. We thread the second hole and make the first tie towards the end of the scabbard ...

We make the second tie in the old hole, but in the opposite direction ...

We do the markings for the screeds slowly using an ordinary ballpoint pen and any "dimensional standard" ...

After marking with an awl, we outline the exact position of the future hole ...

For ease of stitching, the holes marked with an awl are additionally drilled with a drill ...

We sew the seam with two needles ... First, insert one needle with the end of the thread into the prepared hole ...

Using pliers, we pull the needle through the hole ...

Now, into the same hole, but on the other side, insert the second needle ...

Continuing this way we reach the last hole in our seam.

Here, before tightening the threads, we make several turns of one thread relative to the other.

After tightening this "twist" will be inside the hole ...

We make one or two screeds with "twists" in the opposite direction ...

We bring the threads to the "back side" of our scabbard, cut them off with a small margin and melt ...
We made the most laborious part and as a result we got an almost finished scabbard ...

We take it in hand sharp knife and cut off all unnecessary ...

Armed with an abrasive paper, we bring the edge of the scabbard to the final dimensions ...

Now it's the turn of making a homemade leather scabbard suspension.

Cut out a U-shaped suspension blank from a strip of leather

We pass two "tails" of the suspension through the previously prepared holes at its end ...

We take out the knife from the scabbard, insert a technological wood insert and on the back of the scabbard we mark the places for the suspension mounting holes ...

Using sharp cutters, cut out the marked holes for attaching the suspension ...

Wood cutters are sold in many hardware stores, you can make yourself ...

We insert the "tails" of the suspension into the outer holes ...

We stretch the "tails" of the suspension "all the way" ...

We make a wire loop and use it to grab the "tail" of the suspension ...

Pull the "tail" of the suspension into the central hole with a wire ...

We do the same with the second "tail" of the suspension ...

We cut the "tails" of the suspension to the size we need and insert them into the remaining free holes ...

As a result, we got the suspension mount only on the skin without the use of all kinds of rivets and other "foreign" parts ...

Our scabbard has acquired a completely finished look ...

Although the scabbard we have made can already be used for storing and carrying a knife, but now it is necessary to do a number of additional operations to more accurately "adjust" their size to a specific knife. This primarily applies to the mouth of the scabbard. So let's get started ... Stock up on scraps of thick copper or aluminum wire.
Soak the scabbard we sewn in warm water for a few minutes ... Insert a knife into the wet scabbard and use a wire to pull off the skin at the edge of the mouth. In order not to deform the edge of the skin in the area of the seam along the last, we will lay solid protective gaskets from the available material. If you want to give the scabbard some "artistry", they can be pulled together with wire in several more places ...

We leave the scabbard in this state until the skin is completely dry. When the skin dries, it stretches and the inner surface of the scabbard will exactly repeat the shape of the knife handle ...

After drying the skin and removing the wire ties, we get a ready-made, but not yet impregnated scabbard ... If desired, before impregnation, homemade scabbard made of leather can be decorated with artistic ornaments using different technologies from surface carving to embossing and painting ...

Let's dwell on the simple version scabbard without additional decorations. To waterproof the scabbard, we need a wax-based shoe polish. Better to use "KIWI" suitable color, but you can soak the skin with any product containing wax or paraffin, although in the case of the latter, the sheath will turn out to be tough ... Using a shoe cream will not only protect the sheath from moisture, but also make the skin soft, which contributes to a more gentle and tight fit of the sheath in the area of the knife handle. To avoid staining the wood of the knife handle during the leather impregnation process, place the knife in a plastic bag ...

We put the knife in polyethylene into the scabbard and start applying the cream to the skin of the scabbard ...

After applying a layer of cream to the surface of the skin, let it soak in, then apply it again, let it soak in again ... After a while, rub the scabbard with a cloth until it shines ...
If, when wiping the surface of the skin with a clean cloth, it does not stain, then we consider that the entire cream has been absorbed and you can remove the protective film from the knife ... It is also useful to additionally soak the skin of the scabbard from the inside in the area of their mouth ...

The treatment of the scabbard suspension with cream also helps to increase its elasticity ...

We can only be happy for us, since we made a comfortable, reliable and beautiful scabbard for our favorite camping knife with our own hands.

PySy:
1. After piercing the holes, a groove can be cut along the entire seam so that the thread is buried in the skin, but this is most likely for aesthetes. Firstly, this seam in such a scabbard lies in a recess and access to it is limited (i.e., if you slide your finger along the seam, you simply will not feel it, and secondly, when stitching with a nylon thread with a good tension in unwaxed leather, the thread itself cuts well enough into the skin and does not require additional protection ... Then, when soaked, the skin swells and finally hides the seam ...
2. To protect the threads from cutting through, you can use an additional leather spacer along the seam. If you put a normal insert under the blade, then there is no need for a strip of leather under the seam - this is superfluous, because the threads are cut mainly in the area of the cutting edge of the blade in the scabbard, and to cut the threads in the area of the handle - you still need to try ...
If you make a scabbard without an insert, then a strip of leather saves you from cutting the thread and its use is justified, but with long blades and soft skin, the skin itself is often cut from the side in the region of the blade, when the knife is sharp and it is inserted into the scabbard with some turn of the RK relative to the seam ... Conclusion unambiguous - a soft scabbard must make a hard insert ... Well, as for the leather spacer - so it is optional ... If the scabbard is made without an insert, then the use of a leather spacer to protect the seam from cutting is a necessary attribute.

To protect your hunting knife from damage, be sure to wear it in a sheath. These "covers" are sold as bundles or sold separately. They can be bought in specialized stores, fishing and hunting departments, or ordered online. There is one more option - self-production case made of leather, wood, plastic. It's easy to create a sheath for a knife with your own hands if you cook everything necessary tools and materials and get acquainted with thematic photos and video.

Leather knife scabbard

A knife is a necessary attribute of a hunter's activity. Best knives are made from the strongest types of steel, therefore they serve for many years. What kind of scabbard is right for quality knives? The most popular are leather, as they are durable, but soft, comfortable to use. Yakut, Kizlyar (Russia) are considered popular brands. According to the type of fastening, cases are vertical and horizontal, for open and hidden wearing. Often, hunters choose a Finnish-type scabbard, universal or tactical with a Mollet attachment system.

The advantages of using a leather holster are as follows:

  • the knife is perfectly held by the force of friction against the skin, while you can make any movements without fear of losing the product;
  • the case looks stylish, beautiful, very comfortable;
  • The leather sheath can be tailored to the specific knife using the fixing straps.

It is best to carry the instrument in a leather sheath in a hidden way handle down - this position will be most favorable. Leather is easy to work with, so even a beginner without any experience in such matters can build a scabbard.

Materials and tools

To sew a homemade scabbard, you need to pick up everything in advance necessary fixtures and materials. First of all, this is a piece of leather that can be taken from old boots, a thick jacket. Exists different ways the scabbard, so some of the accessories may not be useful. Here is a complete list of them:

  • A4 paper or cardboard;
  • strong nylon threads (you can replace them with a thin cord);
  • glue for leather (it is better to take epoxy or "Moment");
  • scotch tape or cling film;
  • pencil and ruler;
  • sandpaper;
  • sewing awl with a hook;
  • scissors, stationery knife;
  • brush;
  • stationery clips;
  • drill with a drill 1 mm;
  • kitchen fork;
  • vodka;
  • paraffin;
  • shoe wax or shoe polish;
  • stain;
  • PVA glue;
  • cotton fabric impregnated with epoxy resin.

Work instructions

First you need to make a scabbard pattern. In order not to cut yourself, the blade itself is covered with scotch tape, cling film. Tape the entire tip several times to form a strong protective layer. Then you can start creating a pattern:

  • put a sheet of white paper on the table;
  • place a knife on paper, carefully outline it with a pencil (if a knife with a guard, it must also be outlined);
  • cut the workpiece.

Then you can start working with the skin. A piece of material is laid out, a pattern is applied to it, and circled. Another part of the pattern is drawn in a mirror image, or it is laid out on the back of a piece of leather and lines are drawn. On each side of both patterns, add 1 cm per seam. The details are cut out with sharp scissors. Also, a suspension 2.5 cm wide should be made of leather, an insert 1 cm wide.

The order of work will be as follows:

  1. Make holes in the hanger using an awl. Cut off all excess parts of the skin, thread the straps through the holes.
  2. Use an awl to make holes in the main leather blank. The size of the holes is a couple of millimeters smaller than the width of the belts. Three holes in two rows are enough.
  3. Fold the leather blank in half, iron well at the fold. Glue the leather at the seams using epoxy, "Moment" or another reliable means. Press the edges well with stationery clamps.
  4. After the glue is completely dry, trim the edges to a neat shape to smooth them. Sand the curved parts well with sandpaper.
  5. In a small bowl, mix 1 part of PVA glue and 2 parts of vodka. Shake the product thoroughly. Apply it with a brush on a leather cover three times, each time waiting for partial drying.
  6. After 15 minutes from the moment of the last lubrication of the workpiece with glue, when it has not yet completely dried out, draw straight lines along the edges. The easiest way to do this is with a regular fork.
  7. Drill small holes for the seams along the marks using a drill and the smallest drill (it will not work to pierce the glued skin with a needle). Cut the grooves connecting the holes so that you can conveniently place the thread in them.
  8. Sew the scabbard along the length. After that, you can apply a stain on them, let them dry completely without heating. Repeat the procedure until you get the desired shade for the user.
  9. At the end of the work, sand the skin with the finest sandpaper for softness, soak it with cream, wax, dry it again at room temperature.

Survival knives are actively used by fans of extreme recreation, various hikes. They also require a scabbard, and for such products it is better to make a case with a tab inside. You can make them to order or try to do it yourself:

  1. Take a cotton cloth, carefully wrap it around the blade. Melt the paraffin, smear the fabric thoroughly. Form a tab into a sheath.
  2. Make a pattern on paper with a knife. Transfer to skin, also circle, cut through. There must be allowances on the product.
  3. Put the fabric blank on the leather blank, roll it up, coat it with glue, fix it with clothespins. After the glue has dried, carefully sew the scabbard with a thick nylon thread along the holes made with a drill.
  4. Cut off the excess parts, set the edges on fire. Then grind the product sandpaper.
  5. Make a pendant from pieces of leather. Cut out the part in the shape of the letter P, make small holes at the edges. Thread the straps, tighten. Mark the attachment points on the scabbard, make holes, insert the pendant.
  6. Cover the finished product with cream and dry.

If we make a scabbard from a piece of old, too rough leather, before sewing, you need to soften it a little in hot water, then dry it in a towel.

Wood scabbard - step by step instructions

Making wooden knife sheaths is much more difficult and requires some carpentry skills. You can make them from birch bark, solid wood- at the request of the master.

Tools and materials

For work you will need:

  • one large or two small planks about 10-15 mm thick (by the size of a knife);
  • epoxy glue;
  • jigsaw;
  • awl;
  • clothespins;
  • bit;
  • file;
  • file;
  • wood machine with different attachments;
  • wooden pins;
  • vise or press;
  • leather for suspension;
  • rivets, riveter.

Procedure

How to make a scabbard out of wood? First you need to sketch a sketch, finding suitable option on the Internet or by yourself. Cut the board in half (or take two at once), put a knife between them, outline the mouth diameters at the end. Measure the depth of immersion of the knife into the future sheath. Using a suitable cutter or a conventional chisel, make a depression under the knife handle, then put the knife down again and outline it. Repeat all actions on the second half, adjusting them as accurately as possible.

Next, you should give the boards the shape of a future knife. It should fit freely into the case, but not dangle. Sawing is done with a jigsaw, file, file. Both halves need to fit perfectly together. If space is needed for the blade, the handles are deepened with a chisel. Next, you need to work like this:

  1. Place the pins on the epoxy adhesive. Lubricate the two halves of the workpieces, press down with a vise or other press. Leave for a day, then clean off excess resin.
  2. Cut out a strip of the suspension from the leather and two more strips for the loops of the sheath strap and attachment to the belt. Soak leather parts overnight in water in which PVA is dissolved (approximately 2: 1).
  3. In the morning, squeeze the skin, cut a little at the bending points. Wrap the scabbard, fix with a vice, leave to dry. Fold the loop straps in half and overlap, also place under the press to dry. Then the leather will be ready for stitching.
  4. Join the scabbard strap end-to-end, sew it with the imposed leather. If necessary, pierce the holes for the needle with an awl. Use clothespins for easy stitching.
  5. Polish wood product... Then apply drying oil on the finished sheath, leave for a day. Wet the leather parts again, pull them wet over a tree. Fasten the leather with metal rivets.

Some use leather sheaths on the outside of the wooden scabbard, but they can be left as they were. The product with a printed pattern, a cut pattern also looks interesting.

Plastic scabbard

Plastic sheaths are less difficult to make than wooden ones. You will need the following materials and tools:

  • saw and drill;
  • plastic pipe;
  • hair dryer for construction;
  • leather fasteners for the scabbard;
  • sandpaper;
  • pencil;
  • drill with a thin drill;
  • setting and riveter.

Initially, you need to create a basic blank from plastic pipe... Cut off a piece 2 cm larger than the knife blade with a part of the handle that will sink into the sheath. Cut the pipe in half lengthwise. Warm it up with a hairdryer at a temperature of +400 degrees, wearing protective gloves. As the pipe softens, insert a knife, give the plastic a shape resembling the tool itself.

Then let the plastic cool down, become hard. Saw off excess parts of the material along the length and width with a saw. Use a pencil to mark where the rivets will be inserted. Drill holes with a drill, attach leather parts with rivets, fixing them with a riveter. If necessary, you can paint the scabbard in any color with paint for plastic. This will make them easier to find in the grass if they fall. It is not difficult to build a scabbard, the main thing is to observe accuracy and the correct sequence of actions, then you can seriously save on the purchase.

Any hunter, fisherman, mushroom picker or tourist, when asked which object is one of the main ones, will answer - a knife. It is an indispensable attribute of any outdoor activity. To prevent the accessory from causing injury, as well as to prevent the blade from deteriorating, it is necessary to securely fix and protect the tool. There is different types knives. They are worn in different ways: on the neck, waist or leg. A scabbard is used to protect the product and the owner. They are also made from the very different material... Let's consider the most popular ones, their advantages and disadvantages, and also learn how to make a scabbard with our own hands.

Variety of scabbard materials

Among the variety available materials let's focus on the most popular ones. Among them, it is mainly used:

  • leather;
  • tree;
  • thermoplastic;
  • nylon;
  • plastic.

Each material has a lot of advantages.

Material Advantages
Leather The most popular scabbard material. The skin has many advantages: it looks beautiful, pleasant to the touch, has a pleasant smell, does not emit unpleasant sounds using. But over time, the material becomes unusable, dries up and cracks. To prevent this from happening, the product needs care. With regular oiling, the scabbard will last indefinitely.
Tree The advantages of using wood are obvious: the product comes out cheaper, reliably protects the blade from damage. The wood is easy to process, so the pattern on the scabbard can be made the most intricate and interesting. The product does not require any additional clamps, as it is made in the shape of a knife. The disadvantage of using wood is the heavier structure and the risk of splitting during mechanical stress.
Thermoplastic kaidex The main advantage of modern new material is durability. Thermoplastic is not afraid of moisture, it is shock-resistant and fire-resistant. The downside of using it is its external unattractiveness, in contrast to the materials mentioned. Also, quietly pulling the knife out of the scabbard will not work: a loud sound is emitted.
Nylon The material has a low cost, you can use nylon in different stylistic directions. The downside is that the nylon scabbard wears out pretty quickly.
Plastic Most cheap option... It can not always be used: for "serious" use, the plastic sheath is not suitable.

Which material to choose depends on your preferences and goals. For example, some people like to use leather because it is very pleasant to the touch, while others like to use "cold" thermoplastic. You also need to consider the environment in which the product will be used. If the scabbard will mostly be in a humid environment, it is best not to use leather. If the emphasis is on the cheapness of the product, nylon is preferred.

A knife cover is irreplaceable. The main requirements for the product: durability of service, usability and reliability. Before proceeding to the manufacture of the scabbard, it is necessary to decide which material is best used for this. The product must be resistant to temperature extremes, not afraid of contact with water, and reliably protect the blade.

Having decided on the material, proceed to the choice of design. For beginners, it is recommended to stick with the standard form.

The algorithm for making a scabbard for a knife consists of certain stages:

  • Template blank. Thick cardboard is folded in half and a knife is placed on it. The contours should be cut with a seam allowance on the side of the blade. If the material is leather, the margin is ten to fifteen millimeters. The mount is manufactured separately. This is done so that at any time you can make a new one (it wears out faster).
  • Blank. By ready-made template material is cut out of the paper. Don't forget to factor in the seam margin. This nuance does not apply only wood material... When a scabbard is made of wood, the halves are most often glued to size with special glue. The blade should go into the sheath without effort and friction, but, at the same time, not really "walk".
  • Insert. This element is located on the inside, on the side of the sharp blade. Make it out of wood soft varieties or felt. This is intended to prevent negative impact onto the blade.
  • Wearing method. Depending on how the knife will be located - horizontally or on the weight - a mounting option and the required number of loops are made.

Almost each of the selected materials needs additional processing special formulations... This helps to protect the material from moisture. But doing given view work, make sure in advance that the solution will not negative impact on the blade will not cause rust.

Making a scabbard from leather

Leather is most often used to make knife sheaths. It is much easier to work with this material; even a novice master can easily complete the work of cutting and sewing the product. Fitting to a specific knife is easy, you can simply provide a secure fit.

You can start work only when all the necessary material has been collected:

  • A4 paper or a sheet of cardboard.
  • A piece of quality leather.
  • Strong threads.
  • An adhesive used for gluing leather products, which does not lose its flexibility after drying.
  • A sharp knife or large scissors.
  • Scotch.
  • Awl and hook.
  • Ruler.
  • Pencil, marker.
  • Sandpaper.
  • A piece of thick felt for making a liner.
  • A pair of half rings for the manufacture of fastening the product to clothing.

When all the tools and materials are ready, they begin the process. The order of performing the actions is as follows:

  • Circle the blade of a knife on the paper.
  • The knife is applied to the paper and its contours are traced with a margin of several millimeters. The paper should be folded in half.
  • Both templates must be cut and glued with tape. This blank is intended for trying on the knife: is there any backlash, is it too tight. If the workpiece does not fit well on the knife, repeat the above procedure.
  • When you are sure that the workpiece fits, you can go directly to the pattern.
  • The pattern on the skin is drawn from the seamy side. If possible, leave some margin along the length of the knife, if necessary, you can always cut off the excess.
  • Two holes must be made on the inner corners. This is done to prevent rupture of the product during operation.
  • The pattern is cut with a sharp knife, such as a scalpel. This will help avoid unevenness and create perfectly straight edges.
  • The finished form should be soaked in hot water for about five to seven minutes to make the skin soft and pliable. To get full acceptance of the shape of the knife, the skin should be tied to the product with twine or fixed with large paper clips. Leave the cutter in this form overnight.

Let's consider this procedure in more detail.

  • The cling film is wound in several layers over the entire surface of the knife. There should be so many layers so that the shape of the product is preserved.
  • Lower the leather blank of the scabbard into hot water but not boiling water. When bubbles begin to protrude from the skin, the workpiece can be carefully removed.
  • Lay the future scabbard on the fabric when excess water comes out, insert a knife into the workpiece, fasten with clothespins, closer to each other.
  • After the structure has dried, the clamps must be removed.

Sewing parts of the leather scabbard

Before you start sewing the sides, you need to prepare the skin for the process. Let's make a reservation right away - it's not easy enough. You will have to cut off a couple of layers of already dry and hardened skin.

First, fine-tune the edges if necessary. This is most easily accomplished with a swivel knife. Sand uneven areas with sandpaper. It is necessary to make a groove for subsequent stitching. For these purposes, you will need a semicircular chisel or a chisel made with your own hands from a syringe. The line is outlined by hand, the optimal spacing is a step of half a centimeter. It is best to punch holes on wooden surface using an awl. The holes in the two pieces of the scabbard must match, so do this work carefully. Do not try to simplify your task and punch holes in two parts at the same time: they can turn out to be very large.

Joining the parts of the cover by stitching will provide a tighter fit to the product. The connection is made using an awl or overlock. If you are making products not on stream, it is enough to prepare an awl. The stitching thread should be up to 0.7 millimeters thick. In order for the thread to glide well, it must be treated with paraffin. For maximum tightness of the cover, the seams are treated with a special composition of glue and thinner. For the scabbard, an insert should be prepared, in addition to those mentioned, you can use the option of installing a plastic insert.

After sewing, it is important to check the strength of the product. The scabbard should be comfortable and also have a fixation to prevent the knife from falling out. For this, it is made rubber insert pressing the blade.

How to make an inlay for a scabbard

Making a cover requires a lot of attention, perseverance and time. To make the result of your work a perfect product, heed all the recommendations of experts.

For example, if the leather scabbard seems somewhat shapeless, it is necessary to insert plastic, made in the shape of a blade, with a certain margin for the convenience of inserting the knife into it. Ideally, this is done prior to stitching the cover.

Another option for the liner is a regular cotton fabric impregnated with wax.

But among all possible options felt remains the leader. It is easier and faster to make an insert out of it.

  • A fragment is cut out of the felt, which will be used to make the insert and impregnated with epoxy glue.
  • At this time, the knife is wrapped with cling film, masking tape for protection.
  • The blade is covered with felt and allowed to dry.
  • When the material has hardened, the liner is removed.

Making a scabbard out of wood

Sometimes the owner of a knife has a desire to make a case out of wood. How rational is it? Let's try to figure it out. A wooden sheath is more aesthetically pleasing than leather. But performance characteristics below. To make a wooden scabbard, certain types of trees are most often used: walnut, beech, oak. The processing of these varieties is not the easiest, but the quality finished product will be first class.

The algorithm for making a scabbard from wood consists of the following sequential actions:

  • It is best to pre-make a template of a wooden case on paper. In this case, one should not forget about an allowance of two to five millimeters.
  • The contour of the knife is cut out on two pieces of material.
  • The inner surface is processed with a chisel. The slot for the knife should be a couple of millimeters larger. After that, they are sanded with sandpaper and polished.
  • Connect two blanks and check again for the optimal entry of the knife.
  • Parts of the scabbard are glued with special wood glue.
  • When they dry well, they process the outer surface.

It is not easy to make a wooden scabbard, but the material is very convenient for decorating. It can be painted, varnished, cut out patterns and similar manipulations.

In an extreme case, when there is no temporary opportunity to make a high-quality scabbard, it is possible to make a temporary shelter from fabric. Such a cover will wear out very quickly, but as an option for temporary protection of the blade and comfortable wearing, it can come up.

Every hunter, fisherman or traveler has his own knife. If, when buying a product in a store, a special cover was not provided for it, it does not matter. As you can see, making a product with your own hands is not so difficult. It is enough to prepare the material, tools and be patient. The result will be a piece that you will wear with pleasure and pride.

See how to make a scabbard on your own in the video review:

Without good knife the hunter cannot do it. Big choice models are presented in stores, and some prefer to make this piece of equipment on their own. In any case, every knife must have a good sheath. They will securely fix the blade in the stowed position, protect it from dirt and moisture, and prevent injury. The scabbard can be made at home with your own hands. The first thing to decide is what to make this piece of equipment from. The durable scabbard can be made from leather, plastic, plywood or birch bark.

Scandinavian leather sheath making

To make a leather sheath with your own hands, you need to take:

  • hard skin about 4 mm thick;
  • boot knife;
  • knurled with a wheel for marking seams;
  • nylon thread;
  • awl;
  • a sturdy needle that can be used to sew leather;
  • pliers;
  • woodcutter with a semicircular notch.

The first step is to put a knife on a piece of leather and outline the contours of the scabbard blank. At the same time, on the sides of the edge of the blade, you need to retreat 3 cm, at the bottom under the edge you need to leave an allowance of 1 cm.In the upper part, the workpiece must be cut under the handle.

You need to make a markup for two blanks, and then cut them out. The best way to do this is to use a boot knife. It is necessary to hold it at an angle of 45 degrees, so that in the end the two sheath blanks are connected evenly. If desired, the skin can be made thinner - for this, it is enough to scrape or cut off the inner layer.

Then the skin must be soaked for 15 minutes under warm running water. After that, it becomes soft and pliable, and can easily be wrapped around the blade. After that, you need to make a markup for future seams. To do this, it is best to use a knurling. Thanks to its application, the seams will be as even as possible, the thread pitch will be the same throughout. After that, you need to make holes in the scabbard with an awl. They should come out through the 45-degree end-cut of the skin.

In order for the scabbard to be strong and durable, they must be sewn with a thread first on one side, and then pass it again into reverse side... After that, the seam must be fixed with knots. Thus, the main part of the scabbard will be ready.

It remains only to add a suspension to the blade cover. To do this, you need to make a hole in the scabbard using a wood chisel with a semicircular notch. If not, you can use a sharpened metal tube.

To make the suspension, you need to use a strip of leather. At one end of it, you need to make a fork-shaped cutout 3 cm long and a third of a strip wide, and then prepare the corresponding holes in the scabbard, thread the suspension through them and form it. You can add a rivet to the end of the scabbard.

When making a scabbard for Scandinavian knives such as Swedish, Finca or Puuko, the retainer is not necessary. Such knives fit almost completely into the case and hold well in them.

Ready leather sheath can be painted. Another option is to polish them with a semi-abrasive wax-based paste, which will darken the garment. Paint and wax applied to the skin will perfectly protect it from moisture. If you want to preserve the natural color of your leather, you can coat it with shoe wax.

Plastic scabbard

Another option is to make a sheath for a knife made of plastic sewer pipe... In addition to her, you will need this:

  • saw;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • vice;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • rivets;
  • riveter;
  • ready-made fasteners for fixing the sheath to the belt or leather for its manufacture.

First you need to saw off a piece of pipe, which should be slightly longer than the blade. Then you need to make a longitudinal cut in it along the entire length. After that, the workpiece must be well heated and squeezed so that it becomes flat. To do this, you need to use a building hair dryer at a temperature of 300 to 500 degrees.

Well warming up the workpiece, you need to insert a knife inside and squeeze it, giving the desired shape... To do this, it is better to clamp the plastic in a vice. When the shape is ready, you need to cut off all the excess, giving the blank the shape of a blade, leaving an allowance of about 2 cm in the area of the blade.

Then you need to drill holes in the plastic and insert rivets into them. In this case, you should not press too hard so that they do not push the material. It is most convenient to saw off studs from rivets using a drill.

The finished sheath can be painted black with regular spray paint. It remains only to attach the clip for fastening to the belt using a rivet - and the scabbard for the hunting knife is ready.

Plywood sheath

To make such a sheath for a hunting knife, you will need:

  • laminated plywood with a thickness of 1.5 mm;
  • a piece of thick felt;
  • epoxy resin and hardener for it;
  • leather belt;
  • lavsan thread;
  • file;
  • sandpaper.

From plywood, you need to cut two blanks in the shape of a knife. They should be slightly bigger size than the blade itself. It is also necessary to cut out two pieces of felt that correspond in shape and size to the plywood plates. They must be glued to the plywood with epoxy.

Both blanks must be folded to each other with felt inside and a leather belt must be glued to them so that a loop is obtained. It will be used to attach the knife to your belt.

Then the workpieces need to be coated with epoxy from the outside and wrapped with lavsan threads. After the epoxy is dry, you need to repeat the procedure. Thus, it is better to apply at least 4 layers of thread so that the scabbard is strong and durable.

When the epoxy is dry under the last layer of thread, the scabbard needs to be finished using a file and sandpaper. You can smooth their corners or apply various grooves and embossings to their surface. To give the product more presentable view, it will not be superfluous to perform other finishing. To do this, the scabbard can be painted or wrapped with braid.

How to make a birch bark scabbard?

You can make a sheath for a knife with your own hands from birch bark. This is material that has been tested for centuries. It is especially suitable for making a case with a wooden handle, as it will be in harmony with it. To make such a scabbard, in addition to birch bark, you will need:

  • scissors or knife for cutting material;
  • wide saucepan;
  • plank 10 mm thick;
  • a small piece of leather about 2 mm thick;
  • cling film;
  • insulating tape;
  • stationery clips.

The first step is to cut three identical blanks from birch bark. They should be in the form of a shield with a pointed bottom edge. When making the scabbard, the blanks will need to be folded in half and wrapped around the blade, laying them one on top of the other. Then you need to cut out two curved spacers from the pine plank, which will be located in front of the cutting edge of the knife.

Birch bark should be placed in boiling water and cook for 2 hours, and then turn off the heat and leave to soak for a few more hours. After that, it will curl up into a tube. While the birch bark is being cooked, a spacer made from a plank must be tied to the blade with electrical tape.

It is better to pre-wrap the knife with cling film. There should be a small distance between the spacer and the knife. To leave it, you need to place a piece of thin leather in front of the cutting edge.

Then you need to get a piece of birch bark out of the water, carefully unfold it and wrap it around the knife, securing it in the area of the cutting edge with clerical clips. After 10 minutes, when the material takes the shape of a blade, you need to remove the clamps and put another piece of birch bark on top. Then the procedure must be repeated a third time. After that, leaving the clamps, the birch bark must be allowed to dry for an hour.

Then the future scabbard must be missed moisture resistant glue PVA between layers of birch bark and fasten again with clamps. After a day, the entire structure must be disassembled by separating the spacer from the plate from the blade. Next, you need to abundantly lubricate the PVA spacers, clamp with their help in a vice the part of the sheath located in the area of the cutting edge of the knife, and leave it for two weeks.

After that, you need to drill holes in the scabbard and sew them using a thick thread or a thin strap. You also need to do oval hole under the belt clip. To make it, you can use a rope or a plait woven from leather strips.

With a quality scabbard made from scrap materials, hunting knife will last as long as possible. Which of the manufacturing options to choose is a matter of taste. Any scabbard will be good if you approach them correctly.

Every outdoor enthusiast or just a supporter will certainly have a favorite camping knife. And everyone is probably familiar with wrapping it in paper, newspaper, towel and so on, from which it will certainly jump out on the way and ruin your favorite bag.

It's good if you have a special branded knife, which always comes with a scabbard, even if you got it without a cover, you can pick it up in stores for the expedition. But what if you have the most ordinary simple but favorite knife? The way out in this situation will be to make a scabbard for a knife with your own hands.

How to sew a knife sheath with your own hands?

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the scabbard for the knife, let us pay attention to one point - the handle of the knife must certainly be impregnated with water-repellent substances.

So, in order to make a scabbard with your own hands, here's what we need:

  • cotton dense fabric impregnated with resin;
  • a piece of solid dense high-quality leather;
  • nylon thread with a strong needle;
  • stationery clips;
  • awl and pliers, if possible a drill with a thin drill;
  • calipers;
  • sharp working knife;
  • sharp cutters;
  • durable wire;
  • quality shoe polish for polishing the scabbard.

Now we can get to work.

DIY leather scabbard:

  1. The first step is to make a hard cotton liner. We form it on the blade of the knife itself, having previously covered it with paraffin.
  2. Next, we cut out a suitable piece of leather, moisten it well, then put the insert on the knife and place it in the center of the cut.
  3. Then we wrap the knife with a piece of leather and fix it with clamps along the contour of the future seam, leave the product until the skin is completely dry.
  4. Back to work, remove our clamps.
  5. Now we begin to sew the homemade scabbard. Use the awl to make a couple of holes at the beginning of the fold line. We pass the thread on both sides and we get the first stitch.
  6. In the opposite direction, through the same holes, we make a second stitch.
  7. With the help of an awl, we make markings for the following holes, strictly monitoring the uniformity of their location.
  8. Next, we take a drill with a thin drill and make holes.
  9. And we continue to sew the scabbard into two needles, removing the needles with pliers.
  10. Thus, we sew to the end of the line. Now we tightly tighten the nylon thread in the manner shown in the pictures.
  11. Next, we cut off the ends of the threads and melt them over a candle or a match. The hardest part of making a knife scabbard with your own hands is behind.
  12. Now take a sharp knife and cut off the excess skin, leaving a small margin.
  13. Then, using an abrasive paper, we will process the cut.
  14. Now let's look at how to make a do-it-yourself scabbard suspension. Cut a U-shaped blank from a skin flap, cut small holes at the top with a knife.
  15. We pass the "tails" through the upper holes.
  16. For further work, it is better to remove the knife from the scabbard and insert a wooden stick of a suitable size. Let's mark the holes for the gimbal.
  17. With the help of cutters, we make holes along the outlined contours.
  18. And, finally, we will draw the already finished suspension into the holes made, focusing on the images.
  19. Now our do-it-yourself leather scabbard is ready. Finally, let's add a couple more finishing touches.
  20. Next, we need to adjust the scabbard to the exact size of the scabbard. So, insert the knife into the scabbard, after wetting them thoroughly, and tighten them tightly with wire.
  21. We are waiting for the complete drying of the skin and remove the wire.
  22. Finally, we will process our homemade shoe scabbard with shoe cream, which will make them softer and transform. In this case, we insert the knife into the sheath, wrapping it with polyethylene.

Now your do-it-yourself leather scabbard is ready! Happy outdoor activities.
