How to make a knife with your own hands from wood. Homemade knives. How to make a good knife. What you need to work

Most knives are made of steel. But sometimes for making cutting tools other materials are also used by the craftsmen. You can often see sets of ceramic and wooden knives on store shelves. Such blades have their own special purpose.

On the market, they are presented in a fairly wide range. Those consumers who want to save money or like to tinker can make them themselves. Information on how to make a wooden knife with your own hands is presented in the article.

About the purpose of the product

Modern kitchen utensils are equipped with a special non-stick coating. Such dishes will last a long time if the owner is as careful as possible during its operation. To do this, you have to work with such inventory only with certain cutlery.

One of them is a wooden knife. It can be used when working with modern pans and pans without fear of damaging them. non-stick coating... Unlike similar products made of glass, plastic and silicone, a wooden knife is considered environmentally friendly. It is mainly used for cutting minced meat.

The need for such a product for some thrifty consumers makes them think about how to make a wooden knife themselves. Unlike a classic blade made of metal, making a knife from wood is much easier: this procedure is less laborious. Knowing the technology, you can create pretty good wooden knives. Photos and instructions for making such products are offered below.

What do you need to work?

To make a wooden knife with your own hands, a master cannot do without the following tools:

  • a wooden hammer;
  • saws or jigsaw, which will be needed to cut the workpiece;
  • pencil;
  • chisels;
  • carving knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • one wooden block.

The first thing to do experienced craftsmen, - this is a wooden block is being prepared. The workpiece must be thoroughly cleaned of bark. You also need to have an idea of what the design of a wooden knife should be. After the master has decided on the size and shape for the future product, a drawing is applied to the surface of the bar.

What to do next?

After the contour of the knife is outlined on the bar, you should walk along it with a jigsaw or a saw. The workpiece cut from the bar must be carefully sharpened. Improved with a hammer and chisel. Using these tools, craftsmen give the product the desired sharpening. In this case, it is recommended to take into account the location of the wood fibers, and chipping will be prevented if you cut along the fibers.

Completion of work

The resulting knife should fit comfortably in your hand. The final stage is a thorough surface treatment of the product. It is used for this. According to experienced craftsmen, grinding work should be started with coarse-grained emery. And already at the very end, the wood is polished with fine-grain sandpaper.

About application

The purpose of such a knife is one thing - it is cooking. Therefore, it is undesirable to apply paints and varnishes to the surface of this product, as this can adversely affect the taste of food. When frying meat, the knife will constantly come into contact with vegetable oil, which over time will penetrate deeply into the wood fibers. Therefore, it is advisable to use the product for preparing one dish.

Plywood product

For work, the master will need a sheet of plywood. It needs to be divided into three parts. On each of them, drawings of the details of the future knife are applied. On one piece of plywood, draw the shape of the entire product, and on the other two, only the shape of the handle.

With the help of a jigsaw, all three elements are neatly cut out. The resulting two stencils with the image of the handle must be applied from both sides to the first stencil - with the image of the knife. Then, using metal pins or other fasteners, all three parts are connected to each other.

The resulting product can be further painted and varnished. Such a knife is considered a souvenir. It can be used as a decoration, not a kitchen appliance.

Gift option

According to experienced craftsmen, a beautiful and durable wooden product can be made from linden, cherry and ash. You need to start with a sketch. The master must calculate what size the blade, handle, guard and crossbar will be - one of the important elements in the design of a hunting knife, dividing cutting part and a pen.

After the sketch is ready, a blank is cut out of the solid wood using a circular saw. The product is shaped by hand. An ordinary or special knife is suitable for this purpose. The second option is preferable, since such a blade is an oblique blade, which is very convenient to work with.

The central part from the blunt end of the blade must be equipped with a special hole. The mounting pin will be inserted into it. Using the sketch, the master also makes the guard. A separate plank will become the material for this element.

The guard is cut out with a jigsaw. It also drills a hole for the retaining pin. After that, the guard should be put on the blade. For the handle of a hunting knife, a tree of any species is suitable. If the master plans to make a handle round shape, then it is advisable to use a lathe for work.

According to some owners of such products, wooden homemade knife it will be much more comfortable to hold in your hand if the handle is made flat. After processing on lathe or with a chisel, a hole is drilled in the handle for the fixing pin. Its diameter should correspond to the hole in the blade itself.

The knife is now ready for assembly. At this stage, craftsmen use a pin and wood glue. When it dries, the product is carefully sanded with sandpaper. Such a knife will look much more spectacular if it is varnished.

Many craftsmen put beautiful drawings and monograms on the handles of their products. In addition, some stick leather appliqués on the handles. For comfortable wearing, real, made of steel, hunting knives are equipped with covers. This can be used to sew a similar device for a fake product. Nested in the case, the wooden knife will look like a real one.

Knives are different: kitchen hunting ... And there are wooden knives. Remember when we were children we played like that? Here and today for role-playing games in knights and heroes, boys need a whole arsenal of piercing and cutting weapons. And finally, it is more harmless than anyone to make swords, knives, sabers and spades from wood... True, our wayward offspring require a detailed resemblance of such weapons to their ancient originals.

Instructions

1. Anyone who can hold an ordinary knife in their hands can make a wooden knife. For making beautiful and strong wooden product you need hardwood: linden, cherry, ash. Sketch the upcoming knife. Calculate the length of its blade, handle and guard, cross member separating the blade and handle. Take a block of the required length (blade length) and circular saw cut out a blank for a blade.

2. Shape the workpiece by hand. This can be done with an ordinary knife or a knife with an oblique blade for wood carving. Sand the blade with an emery cloth.

3. In the center of the blunt end of the blade, where it will attach to the handle, drill a hole for the mounting pin. Cut the guard out of the board of the required size according to the sketch. Make a hole in it for fastening. Place the guard over the blade.

4. The handle of a knife is allowed to be cut out of any wood... Round is better to bore on a lathe. It is allowed to make a flat handle so that it is more comfortable to hold the knife. It all depends on your choice. In the central part of the handle, drill a hole for the mounting pin - the same diameter as the hole in the knife blade.

5. Assemble the knife with glue and a pin. Wait until the glue is completely dry. Sand the finished item. Varnish the blade, decorate the handle with a pattern, monogram or leather applique. Sew a knife cover out of the skin. Finally, this method of making a knife is rather laborious and lengthy. But it turns out to be roughly real.

Good day! Today's article is about how do boot knife (or rather, its variety) by their hands... Such a knife indispensable tool in the arsenal of any woodworker / carpenter / shoemaker.

Step 1: Prepare the required materials

For the manufacture of such crafts you will need:

  • A strip of high carbon steel (in my case XC75).
  • Angle grinder (grinder) with cutting disc or hand saw for metal;
  • Files / belt sander / sander;
  • Two brass pins with a diameter of 6mm;
  • One brass tube with a diameter of 10 mm;
  • Two-component epoxy adhesive;

  • Hardwood for cheeks (linings);
  • Clips / Clamps;
  • Square;
  • Sandpaper with grit 600 and 1000 units;
  • Drying oil;
  • Ruler and marker;
  • 20 cm (10 inches) flat leather lace.

First, let's decide on the size of the knife. Use a caliper to mark a 3 cm (1.2 in) strip. Do not make the scribe line too deep, otherwise it will be difficult to remove. You can also use a ruler and marker. The most important thing is to get a straight line of the markup.

Step 2: Cutting the steel

Let's fix a wooden block as a guide. Using a grinder, cut a strip of steel of a given width. The length of the strip was 15 cm.

After that, we cut a strip of steel into blanks of a given length.

Step 3: align the edges of the workpiece

If you decide to make several knives at once, then follow the next step. If you are only making one knife, then you can skip this step.

Use double-sided tape to hold the blanks together. For greater reliability, we will fix them with two clamps.

Align the edges with a file or tape grinder to get exactly the same blanks.

Step 4: scribe lines

Draw a centerline and then draw a triangle.

The shape and angle of the blade will completely depend on your wishes / needs.

Step 5:

Using a sander / file, give the workpiece a triangular shape.

Draw a semicircle at the other end of the workpiece and grind it.

Step 6: Kerner

Using a center punch, make marks for the holes to be drilled for the pins.

Step 7: drill holes

Let's drill the centering holes with a small drill. Remember to use oil / WD40. Then we will drill the holes to the desired size.

Pins will be mounted in the holes that are located closer to the end of the blade. A brass tube will be installed in the outermost hole.

Step 8: descents

Now we can finalize the blade using a belt sander, sander, etc. But I recommend using a simple file. When shaping the blade slopes by hand, you can't go wrong and get the slopes with the same angles.

Slowly, form a descent on one side, then grab the other side. Try to keep the same angle. Do not worry about possible mistakes, you can always fix them.

Step 9: finishing the descents

Once you are happy with the shape of the knife, clean the edges of the blades using a thinner file. You can modify the shape of the blade before heat treatment. When both sides are completely identical, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 10: hardening

The XC75 must be cooked in oil at a blade temperature of 790-810ºC / 1454-1490ºF (the color of the blade should be between red and bright red). Let's heat it up with a burner. When heating, try to avoid flames hitting the end of the blade. It should warm up from the main part of the handle.

Once the color turns bright red, quickly cool the blade in oil. (be sure to wear protective equipment and respirator).

In order to check the hardening, we will use a file. If you hear a clear sound and the file does not scratch the blade, the hardening was successful and you should be able to move on.

Step 11: "Vacation"

Clean the burnt oil off the blade with sandpaper (used 600). This will allow you to see the color of the blade after tempering.
"If you love a knife, let it go." Vacation is needed in order to relieve stress in the steel after hardening. Otherwise, it will be hard and may break. Place the blade in the oven for one hour at 230ºC / 446ºF. The blade color should now be between light yellow and blue.

Let it cool overnight.

Step 12: sanding / polishing

We finish the surface of the blade using sandpaper (600 and 1000), glued to a flat surface.
You can also wet the paper to make sanding easier.

Step 13: making the overlays

Now it's time to start making knife cheeks. For all three knives I used different types woods: mahogany, wenge and Japanese beech.

Cut off two strips 3 cm wide (along the width of the blade).

You will also need two 6mm pins and one 8mm brass tube to secure the blade pads.

Step 14

Use double-sided tape to attach the blade to one pad. We drill holes.

Let's remove the blade and fasten both pads together. Then we will drill holes in the second half again. This way all the holes will be aligned and the assembly will be very simple.

Step 15: finishing the overlays

Let's make the slopes on the "cheeks", forming them in accordance with the shape of the blade.

Step 16: assembly

Mix the two-part epoxy adhesive.

Glue the pads to the blade using the epoxy and the pins we made earlier. Remove any glue that has come out with a paper towel.

Clamp the knife in the clamps. In order not to scratch the surface of the "cheeks", we will fix wooden blocks on the linings.

Let's leave everything to dry overnight.

Step 17: final sanding

Once epoxy resin completely hardens, remove any excess material(wood or brass).

Sand the pads with a sander / emery paper.

Upon completion, we will saturate the tree with linseed oil or beeswax.

Step 18: you're done!

Small leather straps allow you to hang your knives on the wall without scratching the blade / dulling the cutting edge.

That's all! Thank you for the attention)

The non-stick coatings of modern kitchen utensils require certain cutlery that would not damage the inner surfaces of pans and pans. As a rule, these are wooden, plastic or silicone devices. In terms of environmental friendliness and aesthetic appearance, wooden appliances can be designated as the best. In this tutorial, we will clearly demonstrate how to make a wooden knife for slicing minced meat from semi-prepared meat. You can use a similar device directly while cooking in a non-stick frying pan.

Materials (edit)

To make a wooden knife with your own hands, you will need to prepare:

Step 1... Prepare your existing wooden block. To do this, remove the bark, if any, and give it rectangular shape length corresponding to the desired dimensions of the knife.

Step 2... Use a pencil to outline the shape of the knife you want and, using a jigsaw, start carving it out. Be sure to pay attention to the location of the fibers in the wood. Follow them for more detailed processing.

Step 3 Take a grooving saw, chisel and hammer and gradually refine the shape of your wooden knife, including sharpening the blade as well.

Step 4... Having finally formed the knife from a wooden block, check that it fits comfortably in your hand. Treat the surface to make it smooth. Finally, go over the surface of the product with fine-grained emery paper. Remove all fine dust remaining after processing.

Your wooden knife is ready. Since it is intended for cooking, it does not need any final coating. It is also worth using it with care when frying meat in vegetable oil. The latter is absorbed into the wood and gives it a rancid taste, which can then be passed on to other dishes.

A knife is a must-have tool that is needed in any household. It is not very easy to choose the right product so that it will serve for a long time and efficiently. However, you have the opportunity to make homemade knives, which will not be inferior in quality to store ones. Let's consider this issue in more detail.

The advantages of homemade knives

Among the merits homemade products the following can be distinguished:

1. Free choice of knife type.

2. The use of scrap materials, which makes the cost price finished element below.

3. Possibility of self-design of the knife handle.

4. Satisfying creativity.

In principle, homemade knives, if you followed the manufacturing technique, are practically not inferior in quality to industrial products. Naturally, all stages of home production must be strictly followed. Also, keep in mind that in a factory, instead of people, almost all actions are performed by machines. At self-production you have to do a lot of work with your hands.

Varieties of products

Before making homemade knives, you need to decide what you need them for. So, we can distinguish the following types of products:

  • hunting;
  • combat;
  • household.

A feature of such products is that the first and second types require a permit, if, of course, you buy them in a store. Also, homemade knives differ in the shape and length of the blade, in the material used for the manufacture. The production process is the same for everyone. Sometimes there are only some nuances.

How to choose the required materials?

Homemade knives are not very difficult to build. However, this is painstaking work that requires a lot of patience and time. Before starting work, you need to be sure to select those materials that will be useful to you in the process. So, you should prepare:

1. Steel, the thickness of which reaches 2 mm or more. Instead, a file or wire rope can be used.

2. Wood or other material from which the handle can be made.

3. Varnish (if wood was chosen anyway).

4. Rivets for fixing the handle.

5. Fine sandpaper.

Need in additional material of course it can arise. It all depends on what type of product you want to make.

The cable knife is very interesting. For example, you have the opportunity to get a very original handle from a shank. However, the most difficult stage welding of scattered wires is considered, of which, in fact, the cable consists. Wherein this process for a beginner with no experience it will be very difficult. You cannot make such a product the first time.

Forge welding is more preferable. That is, the cable needs to be heated, sprinkled with brown, re-heated, and then start hitting the material with a heavy hammer. The procedure is physically difficult.

What tool do you need?

Now let's talk in more detail about what exactly you will be working with. In order to make homemade knives, you will need the following tool:

  • Vise. Thanks to them, you can fix the workpiece for further polishing and sharpening.
  • Metal scissors or jigsaw with matching blade.
  • Hammer (if you will be using a wire rope or file).
  • Gas torch or other equipment for metal hardening.
  • Drill and drill of the appropriate size. This is necessary to secure the handle with a rivet.
  • Grinding machine with different attachments. Naturally, you can use sandpaper, but it will not be as effective, and the work will be laborious.

You will also need sketches of knives that you can draw yourself. In this case, pay special attention to all parameters if you are going to build a combat weapon. In addition, now you can find already finished drawing that will suit your requirements.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

Before making a knife, you need to thoroughly prepare. If the drawing and everything necessary materials with the tools, you can start working. And you can do everything in an apartment or in a garage. Please note, however, that the work is noisy and dusty.

Naturally, the metal should be hardened before work. So, the manufacturing process itself consists of the following stages:

1. Cutting out the workpiece. Its length is 20-25 cm, and its width is 2-3 mm. You will need a vise to work. First, a rectangle of the specified dimensions is cut on the steel. Next, the outline of the future knife is drawn on it.

2. Processing the workpiece on a grinding machine. Moreover, it is necessary to work with the edges. As a result of the procedure, you should get the division of the future knife into two parts: the handle and the blade.

3. Roughing on a plane. Naturally, first you should choose the type of sharpening. It can be bladed (used in the manufacture of hunting knives) and razor (for the production of household products).

4. You have already figured out how to make a knife, its blank. Now let's start making the handle. For work, you can use wood, plexiglass or other material that can be easily processed. First, it should be marked and cut out. Next, a hole is made for the rivet. The handle can now be grinded to shape it properly.

5. The product should be sanded with sandpaper. Naturally, polishing is also required.

6. Sharpening and grinding the blade. This action is performed using a machine and sandpaper.

7. The final stage is product polishing. For this, felt and a special paste are taken.

In this way, combat knives and common household items are produced.

Features of making a product from a file

Now it is necessary to consider the production process using other materials. For example, you will learn how to make a knife from a file. In principle, this process practically does not differ from the instructions already given here. However, it has its own characteristics.

First of all, know that a file knife will turn out to be quite durable and of high quality, if everything is done correctly. For example, it is imperative to harden the workpiece so that it does not break or crumble.

It is very important not to forget to do the metal tempering. This relieves stress in the workpiece that could damage it. In order for the future knife to be smooth and beautiful, an etching procedure is also needed. The preliminary sharpening of the product can be done using a machine. But finishing should be done with ordinary emery.

How to harden a workpiece correctly?

From what to make a knife, you already know. Now you should consider the sequence of the hardening procedure. So, first you need to thoroughly warm up the workpiece at a temperature of 600-700 degrees. The hardening time is 4-6 hours. You can heat the product in the oven, in the stove, or even on gas stove... However, the latter option requires the construction of a special structure above the burner, with the help of which the temperature will be maintained.

The future knife should cool down together with the oven. From time to time during hardening, you can sprinkle the product with salt. After cooling, it is necessary to do the metal tempering. This procedure is very simple. You need to place the workpiece in an oven heated to 200 degrees and leave there for an hour and a half. The knife should also cool there. After that, the hardening process will be completed.

As you can see, building a knife at home is not so difficult.

Etching features

To carry out the procedure, you will need:

  • Blank knife.
  • The container into which the liquid will be poured. In this case, the workpiece must be placed in this vessel.
  • Plain table salt.
  • Nail polish (color does not matter at all).
  • A means by which women remove manicure from their nails. It will be required in order to subsequently process the knife.
  • Mobile phone charger.

Basically, all of this can be found at home. So the procedure will not be difficult and lengthy. Please note that the process itself is quite turbulent. Therefore, choose a deep container.

It should be noted that this procedure is necessarily carried out if you want to get a beautiful pattern on the knife.

Features of sharpening the finished product

This process is very important and requires some skill. Otherwise, you can simply ruin the workpiece or contribute to its breakage, the appearance of irregularities on the blade. Rough grinding should be done with a machine. This will save you time. However, don't overdo it.

Finishing must be done carefully. It is best to use an ordinary whetstone for this and carry out the entire procedure manually. After sharpening, the blade is polished special paste and felt.

What to make a knife from, we have considered. But the procedure has a number of nuances that should be taken into account. The tips below will help you do quality product that will actually be used.

1. If there are slight irregularities or burrs on the workpiece, process it with a file.

2. To avoid injury when installing the handle, wrap the blade with electrical tape.

3. When choosing a material, try to pay attention to its evenness and the presence of microcracks. This can greatly affect the quality of the future product.

4. Blade descents must be pulled out very carefully.

5. If you decide to choose a tree for the handle, you can use a regular parquet board.

6. The work on the manufacture of this product is quite noisy. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct it in the garage, and not in the apartment. Also, be sure to wear work clothes.

Now you know how to do good knife at home. Good luck!
