How to make a machete using only a hand tool? Homemade machete and scabbard for hunting and tourism What is the design

With which you can successfully fight enemies. In fact, this knife serves for itself quite peaceful needs. For example, in Latin America, machetes are used to cut sugar cane or to pave their way in impassable jungles. Machete is a great thing for hikers and hunters. It is quite possible to make it yourself, if you have the necessary tools and some skills.

For work you will need materials:
thin plate of hardened steel,
paracord - lightweight nylon rope with a core
a small piece of leather
rivet for leather,
waxed thread or thin leather cord,
leather finishing wax,
chalk, container with water.

Required tools:
Bulgarian,
sandpaper,
tool for sharpening knives,
awl, gypsy needle,
propane burner,
hammer.

Step 1. Scheme and pattern

Surely you have a suitable piece of hardened steel on your farm. Draw a diagram of the future knife on thick paper. Cut out, and using the pattern as a template, transfer the pattern to the steel plate using chalk. Don't forget to draw a pen.

Step 2. Harvesting a machete

Cut out the workpiece with a grinder. Do not neglect safety precautions - work with gloves and goggles. Pre-clamp the plate in a vice. Make a wide incision on the handle, it will be needed to form the handle of the machete.

Step 3. Sharpening

Now sharpen your knife. You can do this yourself by heating the blade with a propane heater and cooling it as needed in a container of cool water.

Step 4. Handle the machete

Make a handle. Wrap the paracord around the handle tightly. Apply turns of the cord, pulling it with effort. Secure the ends of the cord well using a gypsy needle. If you have carpentry skills, you can make a wooden handle.

Step 5. Sewing the cover

The machete needs a sheath (sheath). To do this, you need a piece of leather. Cut it out with a paper template, leaving a couple of centimeters for seams and fittings. Try on the resulting blank. If everything is in order with the dimensions, make holes on the skin with an awl, at an equal distance from each other. Sew both parts of the cover with a leather cord or waxed thread.

Step 6. Clasp

Sew a short fastening strap to the case. Attach two pieces of one rivet to the strap and case.

The riveted strap will securely hold the machete in the scabbard. Sew a small rectangle of leather on the inside of the cover, for more convenience in wearing the scabbard on a belt. To make the cover last longer, sand the edges of the leather sections on it and treat it with a special leather wax. This is guaranteed to increase its lifespan.

Step 6. Final stage

The weekend was a success, the program was completed at most:
1 A vegetable garden of 20 acres was dug up, potatoes were planted;
2 removed at the grave of grandfathers (WWII participants);
3 annual, family trip to the forest on the lake from melt water "Arka kul" - completed;
4th annual restoration of antiques and the invention of something new - is coming true.
This year, the question is "what to do?" did not even arise. An old grandfather's object immediately caught my eye - it was something intended for cutting beets, etc., even my hardened father could not say the exact name, “it's just Kuinya For Cutting,” he said. I decided to call it HDR.
As you can see in the figure, the HDR consists of a body (interconnected by a bolt-nut system, bars) and a cutter (once well sharpened). The cutter gave me the idea to make a machete.

The way the HDR works is simple: you lift the cutter by the handle, insert the beets between the body and the cutter, and grab along it.
Disassembled HDR in parts.

Cutter width 36 mm, length 470 mm, thickness 2 mm. In principle, the characteristic is sufficient for a knife.

I decided to cut off the section with a machine at an angle, the point and the place for the handle.

It turned out to be such a blank.

More like a large knife than a machete.

Workpiece dimensions: blade length 350 mm.
The rest of the metal will be used to make awls, etc.

After all the preparatory work, I asked my father to sharpen the workpiece on a special machine.

Rate it!
The next step is to polish the metal, but there are problems with rust in places deeper than expected (on the ribs). Then the metal is hardened by lowering the cutting edge into the used machine oil. (There is a need?)
Now another problem arose, and a very important one, how to make a handle. There are many ways, but I haven't found a suitable one for this particular knife. I thought to take a wooden block 5x5 cm as a basis.

Roughly cut in half, drill holes and rivet. But something in this design confuses me and whether it will be necessary to install a guard.
I would be grateful if you could tell me or give me an idea.
Thank you for the attention! I hope you liked the template.
I will prepare the second part of the article after the complete completion of all work.

In many films, the machete is shown as a weapon that helps the protagonist defend himself from enemies or, on the contrary, attack them. In fact, this tool serves quite trivial agricultural needs. In Latin America, it is used to cut sugar cane or sneak into the impenetrable thickets of the jungle. In our latitudes, the machete can be used as a tool for processing wood. You can make a machete with your own hands. This will require certain skills and tools from you. The materials for making this knife are quite common, you can find them without much effort.

Materials (edit)

Before starting work, prepare:

  • a piece of thin hardened steel, maybe a little rusty;
  • paracord;
  • a piece of leather;
  • leather rivet;
  • tsigan needle or awl;
  • waxed thread;
  • leather finishing wax;
  • sandpaper;
  • grinder;
  • knife sharpening tool;
  • propane burner;
  • hammer;
  • container with water.

You can find a piece of hardened steel anywhere, you just need to look around carefully. In this case, a steel rectangular piece found near the railway tracks came up to create a machete.

Step 1... With chalk on a piece of steel, draw a typical machete shape. Don't forget to draw a pen.

Step 2... Cut out the blank for the machete with a grinder. Be sure to follow safety precautions. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing that could be pulled tight, and while working, protect your eyes and hands. For convenience, when working with a grinder, clamp the piece of steel itself in a vice.

Don't forget to cut out the handle. Make it large, you will need it to form the handle of the machete.

Step 3... Sharpen your knife. To make it easier, you can give this workpiece to the blacksmith or do all the work yourself, heating the blade with a machete with a propane burner and, as necessary, immersing it in a container of cold water.

Step 4... Wrap the machete handle with a paracord. Place the coils of the cord tightly and tighten them firmly. Be sure to secure the paracord so that it does not unwind during operation. Attach the ends of the paracord using a large needle.

It is imperative to wrap the handle with the machete. This will make it more convenient for you to work: the steel will not cut into your hand, and the machete will not slip out of it.

Step 5... Cut a machete cover out of a piece of leather. Repeat the shape of the blade, but remember to leave a few centimeters for the seams and fit. Try on the resulting pattern. If everything is in order, use an awl to make holes in the skin. Try to make the intervals between them equal. Sew the parts of the cover together using a waxed thread or leather cord.

Sew a small strap to the case. Attach parts of one rivet to the case and strap. The strap will allow the machete to hold securely in the case, and if necessary, by unfastening the rivet, you can easily get the knife itself. Sew a small rectangular piece of leather on the back of the cover. So, the finished product will be conveniently worn on a belt.

Convenient large machete survival knives will come in handy on a long journey when overcoming impressive distances over difficult terrain, and will also become indispensable helpers in the household. In fact, it is not at all necessary to purchase such a relatively expensive tool. With a strong desire, the presence of imagination, certain practical skills, the necessary tools and materials, you can make a machete (knife) with your own hands.

Materials (edit)

Before starting work, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • a workpiece in the form of a piece of hardened steel (it can be old and slightly rusted);
  • waxed thread;
  • a piece of sturdy leather.
  • leather finishing wax;
  • wood blank;
  • epoxy resin;
  • metal rivets;

Instruments

To make a machete at home, you need the following set of tools:

  • a sharpening stone or a grinding wheel;
  • Bulgarian;
  • sandpaper;
  • gypsy needle or awl;
  • hammer;
  • vice;
  • roulette;
  • container with water;
  • protective glasses.

Design

To find a suitable design, it is enough to look at several ready-made machetes, photos of knives in a tourist store. Initially, it is better to depict a couple of the most suitable sketches on paper, so that later you can choose a single option, the parameters of which correspond to the possibilities of manufacturing a product using the available materials. As an example, you can pay attention to the kukri machete knives, the blade of which has an impressive width over the entire plane and noticeably narrows only in the area of the handle.

Making a rough shape

The contours of the future blade must be transferred to the steel workpiece, and then proceed directly to cutting. To prevent the sheet metal from jumping, it is worth securing it with clamps. For this, it is best to use a reliable vise. It is recommended that you use protective goggles when cutting.

Workpiece dressing

After the roughing has been made, it is necessary to pre-dress the blade. It is convenient to use a grinding machine for this. The presence of this tool will allow you to smooth the edges and give the workpiece a final shape that matches the sketch. You should not prepare a machete handle at this stage, since such work is performed separately.

Handle making

Now that the machetes have been viewed (photos of knives of the most suitable design), the rough workpiece has been prepared and it has been edited, it's time to start making a comfortable, reliable handle. Old pieces of sturdy wood will work for the handle. Having adjusted the handle to the required width and length, it is necessary to divide it into two parts, which will subsequently cover the workpiece on both sides.

Using a robust metal drill of a suitable diameter, holes are drilled through the wood, handle plates and steel blank. Initially, you should make sure that the diameter of the drill matches the parameters of the metal rivets and wood dowels that will be used when connecting the blade to the wooden handle.

At the final stage, the handle plates and the workpiece are treated with epoxy resin. Next, the final assembly of the handle takes place: metal rivets and dowels are inserted into the holes, after which the whole structure is tightly clamped in a vice and left overnight.

An alternative way to make the handle is to replace the wooden blank with a strong rope of small diameter. In order for the handle, made in the form of a rope winding, not to unwind, it is enough to pre-soak the material in epoxy resin. Winding can be done in any available weaving method.

Handle processing

After holding the wooden handle to a state of complete drying and adhesion to the elements of the future machete, you can perform its curly processing. To do this, it is recommended to firmly grip the handle in your hand in order to feel the edges that cause discomfort.

In the absence of extra time, you can simply round off all sharp corners. However, the most convenient to use will be a machete (knife), the handle of which contains special cuts for the fingers. Making cuts will allow clamping the product in a vice, followed by processing the handle with a rasp on wood. After receiving the final, expected design, it is advisable to grind the surface of the handle with sanding pads of various textures to achieve ideal smoothness.

Slopes

Machete is a knife with a characteristic faceted blade surface. To achieve this, it is necessary to process the workpiece before descents appear. To carry out such work, it is enough to have a grinder and a grinding disc.

To cope with the task allows clamping the blade of the future machete in a vice. In this case, the back surface should remain accessible for processing with a grinder. In order for the machete knife to acquire an attractive faceted texture, it is enough to separate the blade and the back surface with a clear, even contour. To do this, a grinder, tilted at a slight angle, is held several times along the workpiece web so that the metal is removed at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the blade.

Sharpening the blade

Knives-cleavers, machetes are distinguished by the presence of a strong sharp blade. However, the nature of the sharpening of this tool completely depends on the needs of the master. Getting the smoothest, sharpest possible cutting edge is bound to take extra time, since it's not easy to make a sharp machete. The knife is made of steel, and this material is not easy to work with.

Handing over a homemade tool for processing to a professional blacksmith makes the task easier. However, sometimes it turns out to be easier and faster to cope with the case with your own hands than to resort to outside help.

If a sharpening that is not inferior to sharpening kitchen knives is considered a good result, then you can process the blade on the same grinder. To make the tip more malleable, it is possible to heat it with a propane torch. At the same time, in order to avoid overheating, it is advisable to periodically immerse the machete workpiece in cold water.

The knife, or rather its blades, is processed with the most affordable sharpening tools that can be purchased at any hardware store.

It is better to make the blade moderately sharp and use the tool only for solving everyday tasks. Having made a combat knife with a machete, it is not recommended to carry it with you or carry it in a car, since the tool can be regarded by law enforcement agencies as an unlawful cold weapon.

Case

At the end of the work, it is worth taking care of the manufacture of a comfortable cover, the presence of which will contribute to the safe operation of the product. Cut out the cover into which the machete will fit - the knife is large and sharp enough, you can from a piece of dense leather.

When marking the material under the cover, you must try to repeat the shape of the blade as accurately as possible, remembering to leave a few centimeters for the allowances that are required to create the seams. Having made a Taiga machete knife, which assumes the presence of several functional notches on the back of the blade, these features should be taken into account when cutting the cover.

The resulting pattern is fitted to the shape of the blade. If everything is in order, then you can start creating holes in the skin along the edges of the pattern. For this, it is convenient to use a durable awl. Care should be taken to keep the holes evenly spaced. You can connect individual parts of the cover with each other by sewing the edges with a leather cord or waxed thread.

For the convenience of using the case, it is recommended to sew a small strap to it. Metal rivets will allow you to fix this element. The presence of a strap allows the machete to be securely held in the case. If necessary, the product can be quickly removed from the cover by undoing the rivet.

Quality checking

Having made a machete with your own hands, it is worth testing it in practice. If the blade is thick enough, you can test its sharpness when chopping small pieces of wood. If necessary, it is worth re-sharpening the blade, correcting the shape of the handle.

Using the above method and exactly following the sequence of actions, you can make almost any knives, axes, machetes with your own hands. The main thing is to show imagination and not be afraid to learn through trial and error.
