How to upholster an old sofa. Sofa upholstery with your own hands. Making an upholstery

A sofa, like any other upholstered furniture, we buy ourselves at long years. However, over time, the upholstery is wiped, dirty and torn in places. But I still don’t really want to throw it away, because otherwise it retains its strength and is quite suitable for further use.

It is well known that restoration is always much cheaper than buying a new piece of furniture. In addition, modern products do not differ in great reliability and strength.

Not everyone knows how to drag a sofa at home directly with their own hands. We will walk you through this process step by step below.

Choosing a material

Currently, there are many shops specializing in the sale of upholstery fabrics. There you will find a rich assortment of both expensive and budget textiles.

Nevertheless, you should not save much, since the material must meet a number of requirements. Choose one that has:

  • soft texture;
  • a minimum of synthetics in the composition;
  • stable color;
  • good density.

Avoid fabrics that emit strong chemical odors. She was most likely dyed with low-quality toxic compounds.

  • The pile (if you like it) on good textiles is dense and does not crumble. To verify this, it is enough to run a fingernail over it with force. It is most practical to use a smooth fabric - it will last much longer.
  • For a room with colorful wallpaper, choose a plain upholstery in the dominant color or, on the contrary, in contrast.
  • The use of tapestry gives the furniture elegance and aristocracy. This type of textile costs a little more, but it will last a couple of years more. Only natural leather remains more reliable than it today.
  • Cotton fabric is not the best option for a sofa, as it wrinkles and rubs very quickly.
  • Jacquard has proven itself well - upholstery from it (due to its density) will retain its original appearance for many years.
  • Velor looks very impressive and in some ways resembles velvet. Easy to clean but wears out quickly.
  • Another pile option is flock. Worst Choice of the possible. Its huge drawback is the ability to electrify. As a result, it literally attracts dust to itself.
  • Chenille, on the contrary, is great for a sofa, as it is easily cleaned of dirt and does not absorb them.
  • Arpatek is almost indistinguishable from leather. It is quite strong and inexpensive.
  • A synthetic winterizer of normal quality is easy to distinguish from a cheap one by pure white color.
  • Good foam rubber is very dense, and the pores in it are small, almost invisible to the naked eye. After being compressed, it immediately returns to its original shape. Arriving home, spread it on the floor for several hours.

By the way, masters advise taking foam rubber not thick, but, on the contrary, thin (no more than 20 millimeters). It will simply be necessary to lay it in two layers, and lay more felt in between.

It is not very difficult to calculate the fabric:

  • measure all surfaces of the sofa;
  • fold the area;
  • add another 5 percent for seams and folds.

So, for example, a sofa-"book" will require a cut of 9 meters long.

Necessary materials

Before work, prepare or purchase the following tools:

  • flat screwdriver;
  • stapler;
  • wrenches in a set;
  • sewing machine;
  • strong threads (number 40 or thicker);
  • tailor's scissors;
  • wire cutters;
  • pliers;
  • hot glue;
  • screwdriver with different nozzles;
  • teak (lining going to the wrong side of the spring blocks and under the upholstery).

We pull the sofa

The first step is to dismantle the furniture. Removed from her:

  • rollers;
  • pillows;
  • puffs;
  • armrests;
  • back;
  • seat.

WITH the old upholstery is carefully removed. The brackets are pulled out with a flat head screwdriver or reverse side stapler (it has a special ledge). It is important to preserve the integrity of the textile, because then, based on the old parts, we will cut the new ones. In order not to get confused later, fold the fragments in groups (right armrest, left armrest, pillow, etc.).

The spring block is inspected. Broken springs are fixed with steel wire. Their protruding tips are bent with pliers. Loose wooden details frame must be glued.

The foam rubber is cut out according to the old stuffing and fixed on the sofa with staples, covering the springs with teak.

The new fabric is unfolded on a wide table or floor and the details of the old upholstery are laid on top. For reliability, they are fixed with pins. Then cutting is done. Further, all elements are swept and sewn together. If tailoring is not familiar to you, contact the professionals.

The finished parts of the upholstery are fixed with a stapler. Use stainless steel staples at least 10 millimeters long. The distance between them is 4 or less centimeters. First, the sides are fitted, then the seat and back.

Textiles are fixed first of all on one end, then they move to the opposite, working in parallel on both sides and making sure that the material does not warp and lies without wrinkles. When all the elements are ready, the sofa is assembled.

decoration

Designers believe that the sofa is the central part of the living room composition. For this reason, extra effort should be made to give it more glamor.

Along with the upholstery, it is also advisable to change the entire environment. The easiest option is to stick photo wallpapers. Pillows with similar prints will help support their color scheme and theme. Now they can be made to order.

In addition, to make the sofa last longer, it makes sense to get covers for it. For some models, they are sold ready-made, for others they are sewn to order. It is not difficult to make them yourself from a fabric with a dirt-repellent effect.

If the model you have is equipped with separate pillows, consider covering them with a contrasting fabric (for example, similar to the one that went to the curtains)?

All things and furniture tend to wear out, and it happens that your favorite sofa does not please the eye as it used to: the upholstery becomes not so beautiful, spots and holes appear. You should not despair and run to the store for a new one, we will offer another option - to pull the sofa on your own.

What are the advantages of independent work, and what equipment to prepare?

Do-it-yourself restoration has the following advantages:

  • You can choose any material you like and decorate as you like.
  • In the process of replacing the upholstery, it will be possible to repair the frame and spring block.
  • Modern sofas are significantly inferior in quality to old-style goods, so you will have an excellent frame that will last you for many years to come.
  • You don't have to spend a large amount money to buy new furniture, restoration will cost several times cheaper.

To fit a sofa at home, you will need:

  • wrenches (from 8 to 19 mm);
  • wire cutters;
  • scissors;
  • side cutters;
  • construction stapler;
  • a staple remover to help you remove old staples;
  • strong threads;
  • fabric of your choice
  • foam rubber;
  • felt;
  • synthetic winterizer (filler).

Choosing a material - leather, cotton or flock?

There are many furniture fabrics, so before starting work, we must decide which material to choose: artificial or natural, with or without a pattern, and, of course, choose a color scheme.

Leather. It is an indicator of solidity and consistency, but find the skin good quality not so easy. The undoubted advantages are: noble appearance, ease of use and maintenance, long service life, cons: cracking (with insufficient quality) and high price.

Cotton. A natural material that is ideal for furniture in children's rooms. Harmless, environmentally friendly and absorbs moisture well. Relatively inexpensive.

Jacquard. Choosing this fabric, you will not be disappointed, it will serve you for many years. It has a fairly dense base and a relatively high price, but it looks quite impressive, does not wash off and does not fade in the sun.

Flock. For lovers of pets, it will become simply indispensable, because the marks from the claws of your pets are practically invisible on it. It is one of the best environmentally friendly materials, it looks like velvet, it is pleasant to the touch, any household stains are easily removed from it.

Tapestry. It began to be used in the 14th century, but now the companies present the widest selection of colors, various prints and decorations. However, a significant disadvantage is the susceptibility to sunbeams, so if you decide to make an upholstery from a tapestry, you should hide it from the sun.

When choosing foam rubber, it is better to give preference to foam rubber with a density of 30 kg / m 3 and a thickness of at least 4 centimeters. Soft or hard, your choice.

Upholstery of furniture - how to deal with this matter?

Starting to change the upholstery on the sofa, remove old cloth, while it is desirable not to spoil the old cut, according to it it will be easier for us to make patterns. An anti-stapler or a flat screwdriver will help us with this. Then we must embroider all the seams on the details. As a result, we have separate parts that will help save on new raw materials. We advise you to take photos at all stages, so that in the future it will be easier to assemble our design.

Taking a chalk or felt-tip pen, we can easily trace the old patterns on the new fabric (it will be convenient to do this on the table or on the floor). After that, we carefully cut out the necessary blanks and we can start stitching the covers (the details must be numbered so as not to get confused).

We make bastings in the course of work, with this we will achieve maximum accuracy. We fix the fabric with sewing pins. We do the final fitting before sewing the cover on sewing machine. We put the cover on the sofa and fix it with a construction stapler, while not forgetting to stretch the fabric as much as possible.

When attaching new fabric, remember three important things:

  • straighten and fix carefully new upholstery to wooden panels with a stapler, the distance between the brackets should not exceed four centimeters;
  • lay the filler in places where it is needed;
  • corners are fixed last.

Now we collect all the details together, this must be done carefully so as not to spoil all our work (looking at the photographs taken in advance, it will be easier for you to understand how to assemble the structure).

When reupholstering yourself, try to avoid complex shapes and multi-piece cutouts. Such upholstery, of course, will look great, but it will be quite difficult and time-consuming to implement such an idea. It is not necessary to throw away the remaining raw materials, you can easily sew decorative pillows. Even from shreds you can create a funny little thing.

Another tip is to have a garbage bag with you, as there will be a lot of garbage and dust, do not waste precious time walking far. When all furniture is dismantled, treat it with an antiseptic against insects and germs.

Quite often sofas deteriorate and require replacement. But it's not always the right decision. Enough to make an effort and imagination to restore old sofa that will last for many years. Many people have a question: how to pull the sofa with your own hands step by step?

It is important to do the work carefully so as not to damage the old fabric, which will come in handy for the new pattern.

You can safely get rid of the old foam rubber. Metal meshes and stretch marks are carefully removed and checked for defects. Fabric stretch marks are best replaced. The screws must be tightened, and the joints must be fixed. It is better to glue wooden joints.

Plays a big role correct fastening new textiles.

Fastening new material

Textiles need to be stretched evenly so that the pattern looks right and does not warp. The fabric is attached with a stapler. No more than 4 cm should be between the brackets.

Advice! It is better to purchase material with a margin so that it is definitely enough. If it remains, it can be used for armchairs and chairs, or for original pillows for the living room.

The foam rubber needs to be cut out and attached like a fabric. You can cut with a sharp knife. It is better not to throw away the leftovers, as they will come in handy in everyday life.

How to choose the right upholstery material

The choice of fabric for upholstery is one of the main places. When buying, pay attention to:

  • features of the sofa, that is, a corner or sofa-book;
  • the general design of the room where it is located;
  • how difficult it is to drag it;
  • fabric price. If the design is old, then it is unreasonable to select expensive textiles.

If the sofa will stand in the kitchen, then it cannot be pulled over with a cloth, since it will have to be replaced the next day. It will not only get dirty, but also absorb the smells of food. The best option is dermatin.

Varieties of textiles

For indoor models, the following materials are suitable:

Benefits of refurbishing a sofa

Some old furniture sets are much better than modern options because they have a good frame. If only the upholstery has become unusable, then this is fixable. Refurbished furniture has its advantages:

  1. Firstly, it is that you can pick up any textile for upholstery.
  2. Secondly, it is possible to replace the frame if it deteriorates.
  3. Old sofas are often stronger and more durable than new ones.

If there is a desire and opportunities, then put in order old furniture won't be difficult.

Video

Below is a video on how to pull the sofa with your own hands.

How to pull a sofa with their own hands at home, it is interesting to many rational and economical owners and housewives. The goals that they pursue are not only updating the interior, but also saving money. Buying a new sofa to replace one worn out or damaged by animals is a very expensive pleasure. Pushed for constriction and a huge amount positive feedback about this procedure, as well as a myriad of beautiful photos constricted sofas marked "before" and "after".

Sofas have long entered the life of people. The first copies of this upholstered furniture were a large number of pillows stacked one on top of the other and randomly laid on the stage or directly on the floor. And today, such designs can be seen in most Turkish and Asian restaurants.

Upholstered furniture is always present in modern apartments or houses. Modern sofas are more complex in design than their predecessors, and are presented a large number models. Most of all, this upholstered furniture is in the living rooms. Also often sofas are used instead of beds in children's rooms and bedrooms. Not quite standard models can be seen in hallways, on balconies and loggias, as well as in kitchens.

All sofas are distinguished by functionality. The easiest to use and cheapest are impromptu kitchen corner sofas. They are followed by book sofas. They got their name due to the similarity with the book. It was these sofas that formed the basis of the assortment in the Soviet furniture stores. Currently, the nomenclature of upholstered furniture and its the lineup expanded much.

Sofas are chosen according to their massiveness and functionality. For living rooms most often purchased corner sofas or fixed structures. The upholstery material is often leather (both artificial and natural) or expensive jacquards with silk threads. The color scale allows to satisfy the most refined tastes of consumers.

For small rooms, the following types of roll-out blocks are considered the most suitable:

  • Dolphin;
  • click-clack;
  • accordion;
  • cot.

Leather or leatherette sofas in the bedrooms are inappropriate to use. First of all, because the material wears out quickly. And such furniture will be slippery. Sofas that replace the bed are upholstered with breathable materials. They are inexpensive and practical. Such furniture is elastic to the touch and is often made on spring orthopedic blocks, providing healthy sleep and comfort for the sleeping person.

Kitchen sofas are mostly narrow and rather hard. Sleeping on them is unlikely to work, and sitting on them for a long time is also uncomfortable. Sofas for the kitchen most often have wear-resistant upholstery that is easy to clean and resistant to dirt.

Over time, absolutely all sofas become unusable. They not only break wooden structures, springs sag or mechanisms fail, but the coating also wears out. And if serious damage to the frame is difficult to fix at home, without experience and special devices, then updating the upholstery is quite within the power of everyone at home. You will learn how to do this with a minimum of costs in this article.

Do-it-yourself hauling

Do-it-yourself sofa upholstery is a difficult process. In order for the work to be of high quality, it must be done without fuss. That is why the upholstery of the sofa should begin with the preparation of materials and tools.

To update the coverage you will need:

  • pliers;
  • tape measure;
  • marker;
  • notebook and pencil;
  • nail puller;
  • hammer;
  • set of wrenches;
  • sharp tailor's scissors;
  • stationery knife;
  • a furniture stapler and several sets of metal brackets for it;
  • screwdriver or screwdrivers with various nozzles;
  • needles of various sizes;
  • sewing threads;
  • a sewing machine designed for sewing together coarse fabrics.

You may also need a camera or camcorder. With this device, you can easily recreate a picture of the process of disassembling the sofa. This will help you stay calm when assembling your "new" sofa and avoid mistakes.

Materials that may be needed when hauling a sofa at home are:

  • main fabric;
  • foam rubber;
  • synthetic winterizer or holofiber;
  • auxiliary fabric (non-woven or cotton);
  • batting;
  • buttons;
  • kapron threads;
  • substrates from sealing fabrics;
  • frame nylon or rubber bands.

In addition to all this, when replacing the upholstery, it may sometimes be necessary glue gun and rods to it, ordinary glue and brushes for its application, foam plastic, bars, plywood, nails and screws.

The technique and complexity of the upholstery depends on the design of upholstered furniture. The more complex the mechanism and the more decorative or voluminous details, the more time and effort it will take to disassemble and reassemble the sofa.

Sofa classification and fabric selection

The main criteria by which sofas can be classified are functionality and upholstery material. The appearance and price of upholstered furniture depends on these indicators.

Sofas in living rooms and halls can be classic - straight or corner. In most cases, the design of such furniture is simple and non-functional, and the sofas themselves are rather bulky. In bedrooms, on the contrary, folding models are most often used, which can quickly transform into a full-fledged sleeping place, as well as baby sofas, which, when assembled, take up very little space. Sofas in living rooms can be upholstered in natural or artificial leather, as well as expensive fabrics. Such furniture usually has many decorative elements and decorations. In addition to all this, these sofas do not have rigid spring blocks inside the pillows.

The choice of the main fabric depends primarily on the conditions under which and for what purposes the sofa will be used in the future. The best materials for upholstery of sofas used in various premises are listed below:

Kitchens and hallways:

  • tapestry;
  • arpatek;
  • leatherette (leatherette, preskozha) and artificial leather;
  • tapestry;
  • cotton;
  • flock;
  • interlock;
  • chenille;

Living rooms and halls:

  • jacquard;
  • velours;
  • printed silk;
  • natural and artificial leather;
  • canvas.

As an auxiliary fabric, cotton fabrics, canvas, interlining and nylon are used. Sintepon and other fillers are needed to fill the rollers and sofa cushions, as well as for fixing foam rubber on curved parts. Foam rubber and other substrates are distinguished by density and thickness. Notably, by changing the amount or thickness of the pads used, the softness of the furniture and its appearance can be changed.

It is very difficult for a non-specialist to determine the amount of material required for hauling before disassembling the sofa. It is also not easy to identify what kind of material may be needed in the work. Among other things, it is very likely that when opening the upholstery, there will be a need to replace leaky frame laths, plywood or fasteners.

All those who have decided to try their hand at turning the sofa with their own hands should remember that the process of change appearance upholstered furniture without sewing and design skills is impossible, and the time to achieve the final result can last from three days to several weeks. You should also be aware that the cost of hauling at home will not be much lower than the price of similar work in specialized workshops, because fabric and other components will need to be purchased at a retail price. In addition, the workshop will not only be able to renew the outer layer, but also

  • replace broken bars;
  • align the springs;
  • perform anti-corrosion treatment of wood;
  • change the shape of the covers and the model of the sofa.

If you are ready to do it yourself or do not know where you can return the furniture to its original appearance, then the next section will be useful to you.

Step-by-step instruction

Step-by-step instructions, following which you can make the old sofa look like a new one, looks something like this:

  1. Free the sofa and the space around it from unnecessary things. Prepare a sheet of paper, a pencil and a camera, thanks to which it will be easy to recreate the disassembly at any time.
  2. Prepare the tools with which you can remove the old upholstery. Please note that the outer layer must be removed very carefully. This will facilitate the subsequent cutting of parts and calculation required amount materials. Remove the staples with a tool for removing them, carefully remove the nails with a nail puller or pliers, and unscrew the screws with screwdrivers with a suitable thread. By the way, with proper unscrewing, the latter can easily be returned to their original place during assembly.
  3. Remove the upholstery pieces one at a time without cutting them, and then mark them with a marker. Be sure to indicate the bottom and top, the belonging of a piece of fabric to one or another part of the sofa, as well as the direction of the shared thread.
  4. Before you start removing the foam, lay the upholstery on the floor, keeping the direction of the longitudinal and longitudinal threads, and then measure the area that it occupies. Most furniture fabrics are produced in a width of one hundred and eighty centimeters. The set of fabric is carried out by running meters. When buying, allowances should be taken into account, especially if complex parts will be made from the canvas. As practice shows, for the upholstery of the sofa, you need to purchase fabrics about a third more than the layout takes. It does not matter if the material remains, because you can sew additional pillows from it or change the color of the ottoman.
  5. Remove the foam, being careful not to tear it. Label and measure it exactly as you would the fabric. Be sure to record the thickness of the pieces. Remember that this material shrinks during use, so when buying a new filler, take a thicker material than the removed one!
  6. Record all measurements on a piece of paper. On it you can draw an approximate plan for the layout of materials. Write down the location of the screws and where the nails were.
  7. Lifting mechanisms, wheels and stands should only be removed if they interfere with the removal of materials.
  8. Calculate the right amount of consumables and purchase it.
  9. After all the materials have been purchased, open the foam rubber according to the patterns, and then the auxiliary fabric.
  10. Fasten the foam rubber sheets with staples, cover them with an auxiliary fabric and fasten according to the model with frame tapes or nylon threads.
  11. Sew covers for removable pillows.
  12. Put foam in them. If the height of one piece is not enough, then use several segments. In order for the foam rubber not to “walk”, be sure to glue the parts together, and then cover them with an auxiliary fabric or interlining. Pieces of foam rubber, short in length, are connected according to the brickwork principle.
  13. Cover the sides of the sofa, forming them in place, or put on the prepared covers and fasten them with staples to the bottom of the armrest.
  14. Cut out the details on the main fabric, sew the covers and start assembling from the front of the furniture. Lay the fabric over the padded frame and attach it with staples. Form folds and bends in place. Screed with buttons covered with fabric.
  15. Fix wooden armrests or interior details.
  16. Sew by hand back wall sofa. In the event that the furniture will stand against the wall, you can close the technical hole with cotton or lining furniture fabric that matches the color. If this side of the sofa is visible, then only the main material should be used for upholstery.
  17. Fasten the legs and assemble the sliding structures.

You can see the sofa upholstery in more detail in the master class on the video attached to this section of the article. In the video tutorial, the master furniture maker will talk in detail about the rules and show the entire process of updating appearance sofa. By analogy with it, you can drag soft chairs.

To conclude this section, I would like to give a few useful tips concerning what you need to focus on when hauling sofas with your own hands.

  1. Textile. Choose it, guided by the subsequent use of upholstered furniture, as well as colors interior. In children's rooms, opt for bright and colorful hues and children's prints, while upholstering the sofa in the bedroom, use muted classic shades. Light-coloured, breathable fabrics can be stained with sweat, while dark and patterned upholstery is almost invisible. Profitable solution for upholstering sofas in living rooms is a combination of fabrics not only in color, but also in texture.
  2. Foam rubber. Preference should be given to a rigid material with low porosity. It is heavier and more expensive than a conventional seal, but more durable. In places where you want to create a height, bulge or other shape, use a layered overlay on the principle from smallest to largest. On strong bends, cover the foam rubber with a protective cloth.
  3. Frame. Be sure to replace worn out sheets and bars, otherwise the furniture will not last long. When replacing parts of the frame, replace the damaged ones with ones similar in rigidity, that is, do not replace chipboard plywood or DVP. Eliminate all backlash: tighten with bolts, corners or glue.
  4. Legs. They and other supporting mechanisms, as well as the wheels, must be replaced if the bases are bent or visible cracks have formed on them. The sofa is a very heavy structure, and if you decide to turn it over (and this will definitely have to be done more than once when hauling!), then it is imperative to revise the bottom and supports!
  5. moving parts. If any mechanism is out of order, then it must be replaced when changing the skin. When choosing a replacement, you need to find exactly the same mechanism as it was before. In the event that this is not possible, you need to change to a similar device, and you need to do an audit on both sides at once. Entire parts of the assemblies must be cleaned of old grease and dust adhering to it, treated with an anti-corrosion compound, and then lubricated with a portion of fresh grease.

Once done with your own hands, changing the upholstery of the sofa will help to believe in yourself. And over time, this activity can become a great hobby and a source of additional income.

As evidenced by the reviews of many owners of mini-workshops for the repair of upholstered and cabinet furniture, it was the change of fabric on the old sofa that became the first impetus for opening own business, which, by the way, in a short time brings a good profit.

We hope that this article will instill in many readers the confidence that it is quite possible to pull over the old, but very beloved sofa itself.

Good changes are loved, if not by all, then most for sure. The old, but such a familiar and beloved sofa was worn out to the end, and on new money no, or are you just so close to him that it's a pity to throw it away? Update it, put on it a beautiful, in harmony with the interior of the room, upholstery and it will change, and you will not have to be upset, looking at the old junk every time. sofa upholstery material

decorative material

Upholstery fabric must meet the basic requirements:

  • be strong;
  • retain its original appearance when in contact with the external environment;
  • easy to clean.

Most often used:

  • tapestry - a dense, noble fabric, has a dust-repellent property. Suitable for retro design;
  • jacquard - very aesthetic, with a double-sided pattern, artificial silk. Looks solid, cleans well;
  • flock - the basis is natural or artificial: cotton, polyester, respectively. Velvety, voluminous, pleasant to the touch. The main advantage is that the cat can scratch as much as it likes, no traces will be visible. It tolerates cleaning well, both dry and wet;
  • velor - durable material, low pile, does not wrinkle;

  • Shinil - resembles velor, but of better quality. The material is semi-synthetic or natural, fleecy, durable, breathable;

  • non-woven and woven faux suede- the material is environmentally friendly, strong. At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish from natural suede. Cleans well, can even be washed with warm water;
  • leather - natural or artificial. The material is practical and durable.

What else?

In addition to decorative, you will also need another consumable. So take care and get:

  • furniture tape;
  • foam rubber;
  • braid;
  • include edging here.

How to upholster an old sofa?

To determine how much it costs to cover a sofa, first disassemble it and determine which elements need to be changed. For clarity, consider a specific sofa with a telescopic mechanism.

Sofa components

The sofa consists of the following parts:

  • backs;
  • seats;
  • armrests;
  • lower part - kings;
  • back locks.

Disassembly

  • We unscrew the bolts that hold the armrests on the base;
  • remove the seats;
  • disconnect the king;
  • we lay out the sofa and turn it over with the front part to the floor;
  • remove the back
  • remove locks;
  • dismantle the seats;
  • remove old fasteners: nails, staples;
  • remove the old upholstery;
  • we take out everything that filled the sofa;
  • if the springs are intact, then we leave it as it is, and if there are faulty ones, then we take out the block.

Note: Do not throw away the removed upholstery. When you sew new covers, the old ones will serve as patterns for your pattern.

Repairing internal parts

First, we repair the spring blocks located in the armrests and backrest:

  • unscrew the faulty springs with pliers;
  • install in the block, if necessary, new springs;
  • fix the blocks with nails on the frame.

Since the springs that we did not replace still have wear, especially on the seat, we make them more elastic:

  • cut into small pieces of foam rubber;
  • we tightly stuff the spring block with pieces of foam rubber;
  • well, if there is an old blanket - they can cover the spring block from above, if not, then we select some other similar material. You can use burlap for this purpose;
  • we nail a layer of material with nails to the frame;
  • we sew the springs to the covering material using a thick needle and twine;
  • depressions may form between the springs. We add stuffing to them: either foam rubber, or cotton wool;
  • we cover everything with calico or calico with binding material, pulling it tightly and fixing it with nails;
  • we spread foam rubber sheets on one side with glue;
  • with the smeared side we lay them on top of the material. It will stick and lie flat.

On a note: if sagging springs come across, then it is not necessary to throw them away, instead this, stretch them. They will continue to serve. To make the sofa look more voluminous, you can lay a sindepon on top of the foam rubber.

All the work that needed to be done before covering the old sofa is behind. Now the fun part:

We sew covers

  • expand on big table or on the floor, the fabric that was chosen for upholstery is on top of the pattern. They left the old covers - remember?
  • we circle the samples with chalk;
  • cut out, leaving allowances;
  • we cut on a typewriter.

Dressing up the sofa

  • We put covers on the armrests, back, seat;
  • the places where new clothes will be attached should remain in the same place where the old covers were fixed;
  • we fix the covers with a stapler, while we stretch the fabric every time we drive in another fastener.

This will help you: so that the upholstery lies flat, start working on a long side and move to short.

Assembly

Assembly is carried out in the reverse order of disassembly:

  • we strictly monitor the coincidence of labels;
  • we fasten the lock to the back, then to the seat and to the side;
  • we mount the sidewalls;
  • we attach armrests to the sidewalls;
  • we fix wooden panels, pre-lacquering them, if required.

As you can see, anyone who really wants to can upholster a sofa, because nothing is impossible for an addicted person.

How to fit a sofa book

Many homes still have book sofas or, as they are also called, sofa beds. The design of this old-timer sofa is simple:

  • seat;
  • back;
  • sidewalls.

The main thing, how it differs from other sofas, is that the back and seat are covered with one common cover, which simply bends when folding and unfolding. Just the inflection is weak point in its design: there the cover is most often torn. If you have this legacy of Soviet times in your apartment and have already decided to get rid of it, do not rush: repair, tighten budget material and take it to the dacha, there it will be like a godsend.

We dismantle and repair

The work will consist of the following operations:

  • remove the side walls;
  • we disconnect the mechanism by which the sofa folds and unfolds;
  • remove the bed from the pallet and turn it over;
  • we disconnect the back and seat;
  • we study the condition of the removed mechanisms. If damaged, you will have to change;
  • remove the cover;
  • We take out the springs, most likely they are already quite worn out. What to do with them, you know, since we talked about this above;
  • with everything else we do the same as in the case of a sofa equipped with a telescopic mechanism.

And is it important: since the sofa has two mechanisms, try not to confuse them: the right install on the right side, and the left one on the left, otherwise you will not be able to fold the finished sofa.

  1. Parsing:
  • first dismantle the armrests;
  • detach the back and seat;
  • very carefully remove the old covers;
  • check what is being done inside;
  • we change what has fallen into disrepair.

2. We will not use the old upholstery as a template. Great accuracy is needed here, because in order to cover the sofa with such material, you will have to pay a decent price, so we make patterns. Along with the details exterior finish, we also cut out the lining, and for this you will need a special adhesive material.

3. Having checked everything again, we cut it.

4. Can be stitched, while:

  • we exclude the sweeping operation - the needle will leave holes;
  • we fix the upholstery elements from the inside with adhesive tape;
  • paw sewing machine, moving through the material, can cause its deformation. To prevent this from happening, lubricate the skin with petroleum jelly, it will slide easily without lingering under the foot.

5. The allowances that we left for the seams when cutting out, after the parts are sewn, will fold together and will bulge out from the front side with a tubercle. To make the surface smooth, we separate the allowances and iron them with a slightly warm iron through gauze soaked in water and wrung out.

6. Glue the allowances from the wrong side;

7. We impose a self-adhesive lining;

8. It is better to strengthen the seams using braid.

Padding

  • We put on covers very carefully, smoothing them along the way;
  • we attach the covers to the details of the sofa with a construction stapler;
  • assembling the sofa.

Choosing foam rubber

When buying such a filler for a sofa as foam rubber, or rather polyurethane foam, you need to pay attention to its following characteristics:

  • density. For parts with different loads, foam rubber is selected with an unequal density: for a seat with a larger one, and for the armrests and backrest a little less:
  1. The seat is most loaded, so you need to take PPU with a density of 30 kg per 1 cubic m - brand EL3040, or even higher - EL4050, only then cover it with super-soft polyurethane foam brand HS;
  2. On the armrests and backrest, a density of 25 kg / m3 is suitable.
  • Softness;
  • elasticity.

High-quality, safe PPU that meets all standards is produced by the Russian company Muromporolon. Its advantages include:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • hypoallergenicity;
  • democratic value.
