Glue for tiles on plywood. The process of laying and priming. Installation of tiles. Laying tiles on a plywood base The better to stick tiles on plywood

12-07-2015

Starting self repair It is not always possible to foresee all its nuances. Sometimes this process becomes unpredictable due to various circumstances and gives us surprises. It happens that sometimes the performance of a particular type of work cannot be carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of technology. And then home master you have to think about how to combine 2 materials that are considered incompatible with each other.

Today we will talk about ceramic tiles and plywood. Someone will say that it is foolish to even try to lay ceramic floor tiles on a plywood surface, but I would like to note that this is not entirely true and exists. real way, which we will consider below. Laying tiles on plywood can be done by both professionals and on your own. Which method to choose is a personal matter for everyone. However, in the second case, you can save a lot. Decide for yourself which is more acceptable!

Laying ceramic tiles on plywood: technological features

In which case would this method be the most appropriate? Of course, if the house is built of wood, or using technology frame construction. This design option has a fairly low weight, and if there is also a wooden floor (high-quality logs), then flooring from boards can be made quite quickly without incurring large financial and labor costs.

Now about. This material, as a type of decoration, is very widespread. It is used for both walls and floors, in rooms for various purposes, from the bathroom to the living room. Ideal Surface for its laying, of course, a concrete screed is considered. But in the absence of such, laying ceramic tiles on a plywood sheet is also possible. Laying floor tiles on plywood or wall cladding: all this is done using almost the same technology.

Even professionals in this business take advantage of this opportunity and do not neglect the installation of tiles on a plywood surface. True, the complexity in this case increases slightly. And the process itself is practically no different from installing tiles on any surface of a different kind. What is the difference between this method and others? Everything is very simple: in preparing the base for laying ceramic tiles.

The nuances of preparing the foundation

So, let's start with the fact that the plywood base must have a thickness of at least 22 mm, and when it is laid on logs, it increases to 30 mm. This is necessary to give good rigidity to the base, it is it that will ensure the quality of the entire further procedure and will not allow the tile to be mobile and crack.

  1. To reduce the so-called surface stress, in this case it is a plywood sheet, it must be divided into 4 square parts.
  2. Only after that you can proceed to fix it on the logs or to the wooden floor. This is done in a checkerboard pattern. A floor made of boards or parquet is also suitable for attaching plywood to it.
  3. Please note: if the plywood sheet is fastened to the logs, then they should have gaps of no more than 40 cm. This is important! Such a plywood floor will be of high quality.
  4. And yet, when fastening plywood with self-tapping screws, do not save on their number. Since their more frequent location will make the plywood floor more rigid and help it not succumb to deflections.
  5. And this, in turn, will reduce the degree of possible vibration of the base sheet. If you fix the sheets in this way, then in the future you will not expect surprises in the form of cracked plates.

When laying the plywood base, it is necessary to control its strictly horizontal position using the building level. Only in this way will the plywood floor fully meet the requirements for a surface intended for laying tiles. And if we talk about tools, then you may also need:

  • screwdriver;
  • roulette;
  • marker;
  • hammer;
  • jigsaw;
  • putty knife;
  • tile cutter.

If you have sheets of more than thin plywood than recommended above, it is possible to use them, but in 2 layers. When performing this kind of base preparation, make sure that the seams of these 2 plywood layers do not coincide with each other.

To give a greater degree of rigidity to such a two-layer plywood base, apply adhesive composition, gluing the sheets together, and in addition, the top sheet of plywood must also be fixed with self-tapping screws.

Due to the fact that plywood is susceptible to temperature conditions and humidity, experts recommend not to fasten it butt-to-butt to each other. It would be most correct to leave small gaps between the plywood sheets, equal to about 0.5 cm.

The distance from the wall to the plywood must be at least 1 cm.

This gap can be filled with polyurethane foam or fix the plinth.

Before proceeding to the direct installation of floor tiles, the plywood surface must be well cleaned of dust and other contaminants, and then leveled. For this purpose, a procedure such as grinding is used.

At the moment when you will fasten the plywood with self-tapping screws, do not forget that their hats need to be slightly drowned in the base, only in this form they will not interfere with the subsequent grinding process.

After finishing sanding, clean the surface again, only with a vacuum cleaner and a damp sponge. At the next stage, the surface is primed: this procedure will be especially high-quality if it is performed twice. This option will help you provide additional waterproofing and enhance the protection of the wooden base.

If laying ceramic floor tiles is planned in a room with a high degree of humidity, such as a kitchen, bathroom, etc., then it is best to purchase plywood sheets with a moisture resistance characteristic for arranging the base.

Regardless of whether you finish the walls with ceramic tiles or the floor, you will need to make a waterproofing layer, and only then lay out the tiles. For these purposes, you can use a ready-made waterproofing composition. It can be liquid, or it can have the qualities of a powder.

Only after the primer and the waterproofing layer are completely dry, it becomes possible to lay ceramic tiles.

Tiling to plywood has become popular. Laying tiles on the floor is not difficult, so plywood tiles in the bathroom are in demand. This technology is used in the arrangement of:

  • Interior partitions;
  • Stan;
  • Paul;
  • Ceiling.

The smooth surface of the plywood provides a high-quality, dirt-free installation of ceramic tiles. However, in terms of their texture and properties, these two materials have different compatibility. Therefore, in order to properly lay tiles on plywood, you need to thoroughly study the features of this technology, clearly follow the instructions and the scheme of sequential actions for performing these works.

Advantages and disadvantages of new building technologies

Unlike the traditional way of laying on cement screed laying ceramic tiles on plywood sheets, has a number of its qualitative advantages and certain disadvantages.

Tiles on plywood have positive aspects:

  • A significant reduction in the load on the floor, which is especially important for the arrangement of modern frame wooden houses;
  • Receiving cladding with reliable strength characteristics and a fairly high service life;
  • Obtaining an additional layer of waterproofing through the use of a special adhesive composition, which is very important for arranging rooms with high humidity, which include kitchens, bathrooms, corridors.

As for the negative factors, they focus on the fact that:

  • The minimum thickness of plywood that can be used to work with tiles or ceramics must be at least 22 mm;
  • Additionally, in wet rooms, reinforced waterproofing should be carried out to maintain wooden structures Houses;
  • The underfloor heating system is absolutely incompatible with the arrangement of plywood on it for further cladding with ceramics or tiles.

Features of the preparatory stage

Laying ceramic elements on plywood sheets has its own special moments of installation and specific pitfalls. Since ceramics and tiles are heavy, the choice and preparation of the plywood base must be approached very responsibly.

  1. Plywood for arranging walls should have optimal thickness 28 mm, for the floor, when laying on logs, at least 30 mm. Its structure must be strong and not fragile.
  2. Everything plywood structures must be securely fastened with self-tapping screws. Parts of the products during installation must fit snugly against each other, since the gaps between them are unacceptable. This is done so that in the future during operation there will be no slightest deflections that will lead to lagging, peeling and cracking of the tiles.
  3. The step between the lags, with further laying of the floor covering, should be about 30 cm in order to ensure an even distribution of the load on each ceramic element.
  4. The number of tiles required for installation must be purchased, given:
  • Room area;
  • The size of one tile;
  • Laying method;
  • Feature of the drawing;
  • Cutting waste.

Tools and materials

A set will help to ensure high-quality work on the installation of tiles on plywood. necessary materials and tools in the form:

  • Machines for grinding plywood sheets;
  • Special adhesive with elastic properties;
  • Polyethylene film for arranging waterproofing;
  • Priming composition;
  • Self-tapping screws for wood;
  • notched trowel;
  • Pencil for marking;
  • Building level;
  • Roulettes;
  • Special plastic crosses;
  • Rulers;
  • Grouts of the required shade;
  • Special glue.

The main stages of installation

When starting work on laying plywood, it is necessary to check the thickness of the plywood layer, sand its surface, and clean it from dirt and dust.

  1. Depending on the installation destination facing material, it is necessary to carefully fasten the plywood to the base, taking into account its snug fit and the absence of gaps.
  2. The plywood is then primed in two layers. The time interval after applying each layer should be at least 5 hours to allow the previous one to dry well.
  3. When arranging bathrooms, after priming, the plywood sheet should be overlapped on top with a dense plastic wrap to create an additional waterproofing layer.
  4. To work on fixing the tiles, adhesive compositions of a special action are used. In addition to their main purpose, they additionally protect plywood from all kinds of linear transformations, moisture ingress and temperature fluctuations. Two-component polyurethane adhesive and adhesive compositions based on a modified silane are recognized as the best for this work.
  5. After all preparatory work arranging the base of the floor, proceed to the main laying of ceramic tiles. Start it from the opposite corner of the front door.
  6. Laying facing tiles for wall decoration has a slight difference. Here, this material begins to be laid from the second row from the floor. So that the tile does not slide down during work under the influence of its weight, they nail under its lower level wooden lath. So she will hold the entire structure until the cladding is completely dry, after which the first row is laid.
  7. The adhesive must be applied evenly evenly, both on the tile and on the floor surface. For this operation, a notched trowel is used.
  8. After applying the adhesive, the tile is pressed against the main surface by hand and held in this position for several minutes to allow the adhesive to harden.
  9. It is necessary to constantly control the thickness of the application of the adhesive layer, using the building level in the work.
  10. To control the width of the joints between the facing tiles, plastic crosses are used. They control the size of the seam during operation, which can be in the range from 1 to 3 mm.
  11. After laying the entire tile, the tile joints are treated with grout, the remains of which are removed from working surface with a damp cloth.

Conclusion

Today frame technology construction, where ceramic tiles for cladding are laid on plywood, is a very popular and optimally acceptable option for arranging wooden houses. Plywood is recognized as an excellent building material, while ceramics and tiles are excellent finishes.

Modern building technology today allow you to combine these incompatible materials to create any design solution. After all, ceramic tiles, replacing any wooden surface, brings its special originality to the cozy comfort of the room and creates excellent conditions for living.

In some cases, it is necessary to replace the floor or complete the wall structures, and then the question arises - how to glue tiles on plywood, OSB or chipboard? The structure of the material is significantly different from concrete, and therefore it is necessary to use a special tiling technology. What is its specificity?

The technology of laying tiles on a wooden surface has its own nuances and differs from traditional cladding.

Features of wood-containing materials

Plywood, OSB, chipboard and other similar materials consist of wood in the form of shavings or chips, firmly bonded with resins. In this regard, two determining factors should be distinguished that affect the method of installing tiles:

  1. Resins provide high strength to the board, and also reduce its moisture absorption capacity. In some cases, you can even do without additional hydro and vapor barrier, but this same factor also reduces the adhesive properties of the coating. Therefore, laying floor tiles on OSB or plywood traditional way impossible.
  2. The material consists of wood components, which means it has properties similar to solid wood. That is, with an increase in air humidity, it swells, and with a decrease, it dries out. Thus, the coating is constantly in motion. This can affect the condition of the tile and even lead to its destruction.

How then to stick the tiles on plywood or chipboard? Is it even possible? Modern manufacturers building materials have already taken care of solving this problem. To complete the lining of such a plan, special glue will be required, some auxiliary materials and patience.

Adhesive selection

First you need to figure out the choice of composition for the mortar and understand the better to glue ceramic tiles to plywood and others. similar materials. For each of them, you can find suitable look solution or purchase a universal option for wood.

The modern market of finishing materials offers a lot of options for finishing the floor. Most often, tiles and plywood protrude into them, which raises the question: is it possible to glue tiles on plywood?

As far as flooring experts are concerned, the technology that explains how to glue tiles to plywood is relatively new. For a long time, tile materials have been laid directly on the concrete floor - they fit together perfectly and form an excellent hitch. Therefore, the question of whether it is possible to glue ceramic tiles on plywood becomes reasonable and you are faced with the task of deciding on the technology.

Even in this article, we will have to figure out what glue to glue the tiles to plywood in order to ensure excellent adhesion and a durable result of laying the flooring.

Note! If you intend to equip a system of underfloor heating in your house, then you should refuse to work with plywood, since the installation of this equipment is carried out exclusively on top of concrete screed and involves the use of materials resistant to moisture or temperature.

Preparatory stage of work

On the preparatory stage you must take care to pick necessary tools and materials, as well as provide good foundation for styling.

The list of required includes:

  • tile;
  • primer;
  • plywood;
  • level;
  • mixer;
  • glue;
  • building level;
  • rags;
  • grout.

The first thing you have to do is prepare the foundation for work. Make sure the floor is level and free from dirt and dust. To clean the surface of the base, you can use not only chemicals, but also Appliances to achieve high quality results. A vacuum cleaner is also suitable for removing dust, but in order to cope with dirt, you will definitely have to use special detergents. Before gluing the tiles, make sure that the floor surface is perfectly level.

After that, you can do the installation of plywood on the base. Its sheets must first be glued together in order to obtain double strength. As a result, laying will be done on a hard and very hard surface.

Note! In the process of installing plywood sheets, it is very important to make really high-quality fasteners. You can use self-tapping screws, which should be placed in increments of 20 cm.

On the final stage preparatory work is the final completion of the floor surface. To do this, you need to apply a special primer. It is better if you apply several layers of this composition. Let the surface dry a little before applying each new layer. The total drying time of the primer is about five hours.

Laying technology

Before installing tiles on the floor, you need to lay waterproofing material, and the installation of the tile itself should start from the second row. The first strip must be left untouched, since it is provided for the subsequent installation of tiles already with undercut dimensions.

Start laying the material should be from the far corner of the room. During the installation process, do not forget to monitor the horizontalness of the surface, using a water-type building level for this. The laying result can be adjusted until the adhesive composition on which the tile sits has completely hardened.

To ensure even tile joints, you can use special tools. For such purposes, corners or crosses are suitable. As a result, you will get seams with identical location geometry. The approximate distance in this case will be two to three millimeters. In rare cases, this figure can be increased to five millimeters. The adhesive composition is best applied to the surface in small quantities, as it dries fairly quickly.

A device such as a mixer will allow you to stir the adhesive composition to a homogeneous state. The area for applying glue to plywood is 1 m². It is this area that is the most comfortable for you to have time to produce quality styling and adjust the result until the glue completely hardens and dries.

If you don’t know how to glue tiles on plywood to the floor, the answer is simple - with a specialized adhesive designed to work with ceramic tiles. You should not save on the purchase of this material, it is best to give preference to high-quality global manufacturers with famous name products that have already proven themselves. Only in this way will you achieve reliable and durable adhesion of the two surfaces.

Note! Each glue comes with its own instructions, which can be completely different. Before you start using it, be sure to read the recommendations indicated in it.

In some cases, a specialized two-component adhesive based on polyurethane is used. It is able to provide such high-quality adhesion of materials that there is no need to apply a primer.

Carrying out final work

At the final stage of work on laying tiles on plywood, grouting is carried out, thanks to which the floor takes on a neat and beautiful appearance.

Note! The grouting process should not be started immediately after the installation is completed. The adhesive must dry completely to provide the desired fixing effect. This will take several days.

Some instructions claim that the adhesive immediately seizes the surfaces, but it is better to play it safe once again so as not to spoil the results of your work. This does not mean at all that you should not trust the manufacturer's recommendations, however, it should be borne in mind that the glue is placed between two dense materials that do not allow moisture and air to pass through, and this increases the drying time. It is enough to wait three to five days to be sure.

The material used is a special grout, which must be rubbed into the seams located between the tiles. armed rubber spatula, you can easily cope with this task. Such a tool can be purchased at any hardware store.

In the process of work, you may notice excess material that remains on the tile. They are removed with a soft cloth. It is highly undesirable to use any hard material for this, because it can cause damage to the surface. The cloth must be moistened before use. And after processing the surface, you need to give time to dry.

There is a wide range of grouts on the market, which can be dry or need to be diluted with water. Never use to remove grout residue chemicals because they can provoke a chemical reaction.

During the repair, there is always a choice in favor of one or another option. Most repairs are carried out independently as funds become available. Since it can be difficult for an unprofessional repairman to calculate the consequences of a particular choice, there are some situations where it is necessary to combine different, previously incompatible types of coatings. For example, wood and tiles, ceramic tiles on plywood. Seemingly incompatible materials, but modern Construction Materials allow "to combine the incompatible".

How to lay tiles on plywood?

This option is most preferable for frame, wooden houses. Since this design is lightweight, in the presence of a wooden floor or good lag, the boards along the lags are covered quickly and with minimal cost, as well as the walls are aligned.

As for ceramic tiles, how finishing material, it is very popular for both wall and floor. Ideally, tiles are laid on a screed, but if there is no way to lay them, then plywood and tiles are a suitable option.

Professional tilers have been laying tiles on plywood for a long time. Such work is very painstaking and laborious. But not much different from laying tiles on other bases. The differences mainly come down to the preparation of the base.

Foundation features

The plywood base must be no less than 22 mm, or 28 mm (according to the European standard). If the base is laid out on logs, then the thickness of the plywood sheet is from 30 mm. This thickness ensures the rigidity of the base and prevents the tiles from vibrating and cracking.

Read useful material about what to do when the tile cracks:

Installation and strengthening of plywood flooring

To relieve the stress of a solid plywood sheet, it is cut into four squares and screwed to the logs or wooden floor in a checkerboard pattern. Plywood can be mounted on a plank or parquet floor,. When attaching plywood sheets to logs, their step should be from 30 to 40 cm.

Important. When strengthening plywood sheets, you do not need to save on self-tapping screws: the more often they are strengthened, the less the sheet will sag, which minimizes its vibration.

Such fastening will not allow cracking of the tile and will keep it flooring for a long time.

When laying plywood, you need to check the horizontal position of its position. building level.

If there are sheets of smaller thickness, they can cover the floor according to the above scheme. To give required thickness another layer of plywood is laid on top. Laying occurs so that the seams of the upper layer do not coincide with the seams of the lower layer. To give additional hardness, plywood sheets are glued together, and upper layer fastened with additional self-tapping screws.

Important. Since plywood changes with temperature fluctuations or changes in humidity, the sheets are fixed at some distance from each other and from the walls. The distance between the sheets is 0.5 cm, from the walls - 1 cm (the distance can be foamed or covered with a plinth).

Before laying tiles on plywood, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and leveled. Usually used for this purpose grinding.

Remember that when attaching plywood, the self-tapping screws need to be sunk a little so that they do not interfere with grinding the surface.

After grinding, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned first with a vacuum cleaner, then with a damp cloth or sponge. Then the surface is primed (preferably at least 2 layers). This will provide waterproofing and is an additional protection for the wooden base.

For rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bathroom or bathroom), moisture-resistant plywood is used for tiles. Tiles on plywood in the bathroom are placed after an additional layer of waterproofing (for both walls and floors). For waterproofing, a ready-made liquid or powder waterproofing mixture is used.

Preparatory work after the primer or waterproofing has dried, you can start laying ceramic tiles on plywood.

How to stick a tile?

For laying tiles on plywood, since it does not have flexibility, which will cause further damage to the tiles due to the movement of the wood.

How then to glue the tiles to the plywood?

For these purposes, two-component or silicone adhesives, adhesives for movable bases, parquet adhesive based on modified silane are used (universal adhesives must be checked on which substrates it is gluing before buying). They provide good grip and joint mobility. In addition, this adhesive is an additional waterproofing layer.

Advice. Like any other tile adhesive, it must be kneaded in small portions and before laying itself so that it does not have time to dry.

For laying PVC tiles on plywood, it will be enough to level and prime the base. Laying starts from the center of the room (it is located at the intersection of the line from the centers of opposite walls that form a cross).

First, perform a "dry" installation: pvc tiles it is laid out so that the walls have cut pieces of no more than half of a whole tile (this also applies to ceramic tiles). If necessary, the lines are slightly transferred to get an even and neat drawing.

Then the tile is glued on glue or on a self-adhesive base. Further - they are rolled a little with a heavy roller or an ordinary one, but with effort, expelling air from under them. Tiles are laid as close as possible to each other.

When laying tiles on the walls, so that it does not slip during further work, a wooden lath is nailed at the level of the second row from the bottom. It will hold the entire structure until it dries completely. Then it is removed and the first row is laid (most often cut tiles).

Laying floor tiles on plywood can also start from the second row (from the wall), from the center of the room, diagonally. Options depend on the size of the room, pattern, etc.

Gluing features

Tile adhesive on plywood is applied to small areas, 1-4 tiles in size, but not more than 1 m² (due to the fact that the glue dries very quickly) notched trowel, which will evenly distribute the glue on a wooden base.

The first tile on plywood is carefully laid out on glue, it is slightly pressed, and the horizontal position of its laying is checked with a building level. If there are small deviations, then tap on the tile rubber mallet(with a hammer) and check the level again.

To the first tile lay out the second and so on. Special crosses or pegs are inserted into the seams between them, which regulate the thickness of the seam.

Advice. The thickness of the seam depends on the size of the tile that is laid on the plywood. The larger the tiles, the wider the seam, but not more than 0.5 cm.

Then lay out the third and fourth tiles and align them with the first two and the floor. Thus, the entire space of the walls or floor is filled with whole tiles, after they dry, cut pieces are laid out.

The advantage of glue for wooden bases is that it dries very quickly. After a few hours, you can safely walk on the floor and carry out further work.

Important. During laying, protruding adhesive must be removed from the surface immediately so that it does not leave a dark spot.

The process of laying tiles on plywood

After the floor has dried, the seams must be processed (before starting work, all crosses or pegs must be removed from the seams).

They are treated with a grout designed for these purposes. It can be slightly lighter or darker than the overall color of the tile, or the traditional white.

It is applied with a rubber spatula with movements directed perpendicular to the seams (for a more complete filling of the seams). Grout is an additional protective layer that prevents moisture from entering the base. give them time to dry.

After that, the tile is thoroughly washed with a cloth. You need to wash carefully so as not to wash the fresh grout out of the seams and with a light cloth so as not to paint them. Then all the tiles laid on plywood are rubbed with a dry cloth or sponge. This completes the laying work.

More this process you can see in the video below. We recommend that you read it (it is short).
