What is a heating system for an individual building?

Any modern individual housing is equipped with a heat supply system, which, as a rule, includes four components:

  • heat source;
  • system radiator heating;
  • underfloor heating system;
  • hot water preparation system

Consider the automation of these four systems.

1. Boiler and hot water preparation system

In most cases, the source of thermal energy for heating an individual building is its own boiler, which runs on gaseous or liquid fuel. Modern boilers are divided into two large groups: single-circuit and double-circuit.

Double-circuit boilers designed for heating and supplying the heating agent to the heating circuit, as well as for preparing hot water (DHW). The double-circuit boilers include a heat exchanger for heating hot water, a three-way valve for switching the heating / DHW heating mode, a circulation pump, and automation. Hot water is prepared in an instantaneous heat exchanger, therefore the boiler must have sufficient capacity to cover the peak demand for hot water. To connect a double-circuit boiler, manufacturers recommend installing shut-off valves, as well as filters at the boiler inlet of cold drinking water and coolant from the heating system.

Single-circuit boilers are designed to heat the heating medium of the heating circuit. The boiler usually includes a burner control and protection system. Circulating pumps and a heat exchanger for heating hot water must be installed separately. Often with single-circuit boilers use a boiler indirect heating representing storage tank hot water with a built-in heat exchanger. To supply the heating medium to the heating circuit and DHW heating the boiler piping pump unit DSM-BPU is used.


The heating circuit pump pumps the coolant through the boiler, radiators and (using a mixing unit) through the underfloor heating kennels. In the heating circuit, thermostatic regulators are installed, which change the circuit resistance depending on the room temperature. To ensure the circulation of the coolant through the boiler in any operating modes, an AVDO bypass valve is provided in the heating circuit of the DSM-BPU pumping unit. The AVDO valve can be adjusted to maintain the required minimum consumption depending on the boiler used. The DHW circuit pump pumps the heating medium through the boiler and the indirect heating boiler. The resistance of the DHW heating circuit is constant, therefore the installation of a bypass valve is not required.

As a rule, the boiler power is selected based on the average heat consumption of the heating circuit and DHW. Peak loads when using hot water are covered by the hot water supply in the indirect boiler. In this case, the boiler works either for the heating circuit, or, if the water temperature in the indirect heating boiler falls below the set value, it switches to hot water heating. This operating mode is called "DHW priority". Switching heating circuits using the DSM-BPU is very quick and easy: just switch the supply voltage from the heating circuit pump to the DHW heating circuit pump. Installed at the outlet of each pump check valves ensure the correct direction of the flow of the coolant. Thus, in order to realize the DHW priority, it is enough to connect the pumps of the DSM-BPU unit to the thermostat of the indirect heating boiler or to the boiler control system.

The pumping unit of the boiler piping includes filters for each circuit, safety valve, tap to connect expansion tank, shut-off valves on each circuit for convenience service systems. Installing additional pipeline fittings not required.

2. Radiator heating

The radiator piping should perform the following main functions: adjust the radiator power depending on the room temperature, shut off the coolant flow into the radiator for maintenance, repair or replacement, ensure the possibility of draining the coolant from the radiator during the repair

There are two ways to regulate the power of radiator heating: by controlling all radiators in one room at the same time using a room thermostat or by controlling each radiator independently by a radiator thermostat

A room thermostat is used if the radiators are covered with a decorative grill, in which case the temperature at the place where the radiator is installed differs significantly from the temperature in the room, and the radiator thermostat will not work correctly. Also, if a large number of radiators are installed in the room, it is more convenient to regulate the temperature in the room with one device - a room thermostat. Using room thermostat radiators located in this room are connected to a distribution manifold, on which thermoelectric actuators are located. The actuators open and close the supply of the coolant to the radiators at the command of the room thermostat. The signal from the room thermostat can be wired (wired version) or as a radio signal (wireless version) to the receiver. For the convenience of connecting thermoelectric actuators, you can use the FH-WC patch panel.

To be able to turn off the radiator and drain the coolant from it, it is necessary to use special shut-off valves, for example, RLV-KD for radiators with bottom connection or 2 pcs. RLV for radiators with side connection. 3. Floor heating

Underfloor heating provides special comfort in the room. With sufficient insulation, a warm floor can compensate for heat loss, but in practice, as a rule, a warm floor system is installed in addition to radiator heating.

For radiators and for underfloor heating, different coolant temperatures are required. The classic parameters for radiators are 80 C for supply and 60 C for return. For a comfortable and safe stay, the average temperature of the floor surface should not be higher than +26 C for rooms with constant presence of people, this value is regulated by the Code of Rules SP60.13330.2012 (updated edition of SNiP 41-01). To achieve such a temperature of the floor surface, the temperature of the supplied heat carrier must be about 40 C. In order for the temperature of the floor surface to be uniform, the temperature of the returned heat carrier must differ from the supply temperature by no more than 5 ... 10 C. To obtain such parameters of the heat carrier of the underfloor heating, mixing units are used.
