On Friday, September 21, all Orthodox believers celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Lady of our Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

This twelve-tenth, non-transient Feast of the Mother of God is celebrated as one of the great holidays, it is considered the day of the beginning of the Russian state, as indicated on the monument to the Millennium of Russia, erected in Novgorod in 1862, during the reign of Emperor Alexander I.

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: history

When the time drew near for the Savior of the world to be born, in the Galilee city of Nazareth lived a descendant of King David Joachim with his wife Anna, pious people known not for their royal origin, but for their humility and mercy. Their whole life was imbued with love for God. They distributed most of their money to the poor, fed and watered the poor, often visited synagogues, which they decorated at their own expense. They lived to a ripe old age, and did not have children, this made them very upset. At that time, every Jew hoped through his offspring to be a participant in the kingdom of the Messiah, and if there were no children, this was considered a great punishment from God for sins.

One day, on a great feast, Joachim went to the temple to offer a sacrifice. The priest, having learned that Joachim was childless, did not allow him to do this. The Jews who were here began to laugh at him and insult him. The incident so saddened Joachim that he did not want to return home, but went into the desert, where his flocks were grazing. Here, in prayers to God, he made a promise until then not to eat, not drink and not return home until God hears his prayers.
Anna, his wife, stayed at home. Hearing about what had happened, she began to pray even more fervently to God and promised to give the child to the service of the Lord, if He pleases to hear their prayer. During this prayer, an Angel appeared to her and said: "Your prayer has been heard, the Lord will send you a daughter, whom you will call Mary." At the same time, an Angel appeared to Joachim and announced the same good news.

For patience, great faith and love for God and for each other, the Lord sent Joachim and Anna this great joy - at the end of their life they had a daughter. At the direction of the Angel, her parents gave her the name Mary, which means in Hebrew "Lady, Hope." The birth of Mary brought joy not only to her parents, but to all people, because she was intended by God to be the Mother of the Son of God, the Savior of the world. The parents kept their Most Holy Daughter as the apple of their eye and not only loved as a daughter, but also honored, remembering what the Angel said about her. When She was three years old, they brought Mary to the temple, and, according to the promise, dedicated to God. This event is celebrated under the title Introduction to the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos on December 4 (November 21, Old Style).

The meaning of the holiday for Christians

The Blessed Virgin was born as a sign of consolation to her elderly parents, whose hearts were filled with love for the Creator. Saint Anna and Saint Joachim sacrificially prayed for only one thing: that their righteous life would be illuminated with light and filled with meaning in the face of a baby. God was merciful and sent an angel who told Anna that she could get pregnant and her child would glorify the whole family. Exactly nine months after that day, Mary was born.

It is important to note the origin of the Virgin. She was born sinless: the Lord delivered Her from original sin, which passes to every person from Adam and Eve. In the face of the Mother of God, two hereditary lines were combined, which have long been at odds with each other. According to her father, the Virgin Mary belonged to the descendants of King David, while the mother of the Virgin belonged to the family of high priests. Hence the status that Jesus Christ received during his lifetime: Heavenly King.

For believing Christians, the birth of the Virgin Mary is an important holiday. The prophecies of the Old Testament began to come true, and later every soul found a chance for eternal life in a world devoid of pain, sorrow and despondency. The Mother of God gave her Savior and Deliverer from sin with her parish.

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the history of the holiday

The Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, also called the Mother of God Feast, is celebrated by Russians on September 21, 2017. This day is considered a joyous event, families go to church services together and do not take on hard work.

Christians of the Eastern rite celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, or the "Second Most Pure" or "Autumn", since autumn begins on this day according to the popular calendar. Christians have long turned to the Mother of God, who became the unifying principle between God and the human race, and asked her for protection and blessing.

Feasts of the Mother of God are magnificently celebrated in places where churches were consecrated in her honor. Temple (patronal) feasts are usually held with worship and the following meal. Dinners are sure to be arranged, where all relatives gather at a round table.

The Holy Church rightly calls Joachim and Anna the Godfathers, because Jesus Christ was born from their daughter the Virgin Mary.

The events associated with the birth of the Virgin Mary are not described in the New Testament - the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is based on church tradition, which tells that the parents of the Virgin Mary were righteous Joachim from the family of King David and Anna from the family of the high priest Aaron.

According to the special providence of God, they lived to old age and were childless, despite the fact that during their 50-year marriage they prayed to God for the granting of offspring to them, humbly trusting in his will. Childlessness greatly upset Joachim and Anna, and also caused public censure, since in those days childlessness was considered a shame. On one of the holidays, they went to the Jerusalem temple to worship the Lord and offer the due sacrifices.

The high priest, believing that the childless Joachim did not have the blessing of God, refused to accept them from him, which greatly saddened the elder. Without returning home, the inconsolable Joachim retired into the desert and spent forty days there in strict fasting and prayer, praying to the Lord for mercy. His righteous wife, having learned about the act of her husband, also began in fasting and prayer to mournfully ask God to give her a child, promising to bring a born child as a gift to God.

And the prayer of the Holy Spouses was heard - an angel appeared to both of them and announced that they would have a daughter, whom the whole human race would bless. Having learned the good news, the couple met at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. After that, Anna conceived. As the Proto Gospel of Jacob, written in the II century, tells: "The months allotted to it passed, and Anna gave birth in the ninth month."

The parents named the girl Mary and raised her in love for the Lord. And when the baby reached the age of three, Anna and Joachim took her to the temple of God in order to fulfill the promise given once to the Lord to dedicate the child given to them to serve the Creator.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, with her purity and virtue, surpassed not only all people, but also Angels, became a living temple of God and, as the Church sings in festive chants, "the Heavenly Door, leading Christ into the Universe for the salvation of our souls."

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: what not to do

Do not engage in heavy physical labor: leave the work around the house, in the garden and vegetable garden for later.

When you sit down with the whole family at the table, you cannot sweep crumbs on the floor. If there was bread left after a meal, it was given to pets.

You can also not quarrel with loved ones and conflict with others (if the situation is close to critical, try to resolve any controversial issues peacefully).

On the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, you should have pure thoughts. Do not raise your voice at loved ones - this is a sin. Also, you cannot wish another evil or think badly of someone.

Fasting is observed on this day: it is not allowed to consume meat and alcohol.
