An easy way to transfer an image to a tree. We transfer the image to the tree What can be transferred to the photo

Wood elements in the interior make it more elegant and attractive. This decor can be made by hand. The most simple option will become a wooden plank with a pattern, which is applied to the surface in accordance with a certain technique. To make a product correctly and beautifully, you need to know exactly how to transfer a drawing to a tree in several ways.

How can you decorate a tree through a drawing

There are several techniques in which a drawing can be projected onto a wooden surface. In each situation, it is worth knowing exactly how to transfer a drawing to a tree:

  • Burning out with a special device. The drawing is clear and embossed. Outlines are noticeably limited, you can create a drop shadow effect or drop shadow.
  • Decoupage is the most popular and simple technique creating a drawing. As a result, the image can turn out in color or black and white, the drawing can be of any complexity.
  • For wood carving, a sketch is needed, which is projected onto the surface in several ways: using carbon paper, redrawing, relief copying using sharp tools.

You can partially combine several techniques in one job. This is possible provided that the person has an artistic talent that will help to abstractly present the result of the work.

Wood surface preparation

Before transferring the drawing to the tree at home, it is worth preparing the surface correctly. Both the process of work and the result depend on the quality of the wooden base. The service life is also directly determined by the quality of the preparation of the tree.

Training wooden surface:

  1. Select correct tree... It is best to work with pressed sheets of plywood, chipboard and other analogs, but also natural material quite suitable.
  2. Decide on the parameters and shape of the wooden base. Get rid of excess parts immediately, sand the edges.
  3. The surface itself should be smooth and level. For this it is worth using grinder, a hard-to-reach places process sandpaper or with a file.
  4. Only then a sketch of the image itself is prepared for transfer.

Thus, preparation consists of three simple steps that even a child can do.

on wood

In order for the burning procedure to be carried out quickly and efficiently, it is necessary that the drawing on the surface of the tree be as accurate and high-quality as possible. Several methods are used to transfer an image to a surface. The most popular option is carbon copy transfer.

How to transfer a drawing to a wood for burning using a carbon copy:

  1. You need to take a sheet of carbon paper. It is advisable to use paper that has been used more than once.
  2. Place the carbon paper with the colored side against the wooden surface. Lay out a sheet with a drawing on top and secure the structure with tape or electrical tape.
  3. With a graphite pencil, trace the lines of the image. You need to work carefully, limiting the interaction of hands with paper as much as possible.
  4. After finishing the stroke of the lines, remove the layers of paper. The drawing for burning is ready.

This method is very reliable, but requires special care in execution. In the process of translation, traces of carbon paper may remain, which are almost impossible to clean from the surface of the tree.

Drawing without carbon copy

In order to find out how to transfer a drawing to a tree without a carbon copy, you can use several methods. Each differs in a set of tools and materials, but simple in the sense of implementation.

Image transfer methods:

  1. Graphite print. Take a simple pencil with a soft point and trace the contours of the drawing on the paper. Rotate image to wooden base and press quickly without shifting. In order for the graphite to print with high quality, you can run it over the paper with a hard roller or a plastic strip.
  2. Thermal transfer. First you need to pick up the image taken on the right device. With the help of thermal action, a photocopy or printout made on a powder printer is printed. Attach the back to the wooden base and heat the paper with an iron.
  3. Reprint with white spirit. The picture must be printed on a laser printer or copier. Attach the sheet with a pattern to the tree and wipe with white spirit. It is worth applying a little product on a cotton pad so that the paper does not sour.

There are other options, but the principle of implementation is much more complicated and requires more time and money.

Preparing wood for carving

To form an image on a board or plywood, you need to know just a few basic rules. If the work is done incorrectly, then the threading process can be significantly complicated.

How to transfer a drawing to a wood for carving in order to comply with all the rules:

  1. Apply a mesh on the surface of the transparent paper. The size of the cage will depend on the required size of the picture.
  2. If you need to create an ornament, then put part of the image on tracing paper and fold the sheet in half. Draw a pencil around the image on the other half of the tracing paper.
  3. The symmetry of the picture can be given by using a carbon copy.

The method of transferring an ornament or image can be used from the above options. The main thing is to lay the sheet with the applied ornament so that the direction of the pattern coincides with the arrangement of the fibers.

Decoupage technique - a simple way to transfer an image

Often, more than just manufacturing is required interesting decorations for an interior with a picture on a tree, but also a more practical application of technology. Knowing how to transfer a drawing to a tree, you can restore old furniture, do wooden element design.

To implement such ideas, the decoupage technique is used. The principle of such work is simple and does not require special skills, availability unusual materials or tools.

How to transfer a drawing to a tree using PVA glue using the simplest algorithm:

  1. The prepared surface must be coated with PVA glue. The layer should not be too thick. The strokes must be made even and uniform.
  2. Place the drawing on the surface of the wood and gently straighten it paper web... You need to expel air and position the edges of the cellulose base.
  3. On top, once again smear the image with a thin layer of PVA. Wait until everything is dry and duplicate the layer again.

Further processing is selected in accordance with the preferences of the "creator".

Additional finishing

After the drawing has been transferred to the tree and the secondary surface treatment has been performed, it is worth considering options for further surface treatment.

There are several options:

  1. Cover with varnish.
  2. Paint.
  3. Prime.
  4. Leave the product untreated.
  5. Laminate.

Additional decoration includes the manufacture of a stand, frame, pendants for finished product... Here you can show your imagination and skills.

I want to add a couple of nuances when using colorful magazines. Apparently, temperature rather than pressure plays a role here in the first place. therefore, using heavier pages will increase the warm-up time. but the temperature lasts more evenly and the heated area lasts longer. thinner sheets have several drawbacks. 1 this laser printer jams thin paper SOLUTION to pass a thin sheet together with a thin sheet of a sheet of ordinary 80 ki
2. Thin paper warms up faster and therefore, in addition to your stencil, magazine drawing can also stick to the blank. DECISION it is necessary to control the translation of the stencil without overheating the sheet, or simply neglect if the drawing even got to the workpiece. in principle, it does not interfere in my case, because I use it for cutting. and then with subsequent sanding with sandpaper. if the cleanliness of the stencil is still necessary, then empirically select the temperature of the iron. Because the toner adhesion temperature is lower than the ink peel temperature.

Here's an example of overheating.

Here is an example of a more closely matched temperature

here is the media sheet from the top second photo. you can see how almost 100% of the stencil drawing was peeled off, but the magazine drawing was not damaged

Distinctive feature century of high technologies is the ease with which beauty is replicated and originality is put on stream. But if not everyone is given to become an artist and write great canvases, then create unique images with the help of simple technologies under the power of many.

The tree is one of suitable materials, on which a photo or favorite drawing will look great. In addition to the fact that the quality of the product will remain unchanged for many years, it will be a kind of masterpiece or piece goods, depending on how you dispose of it.

The essence of technology

Don't be scared by such Clever words, like the technology of sublimation printing or graverton, because they are one and the same, therefore, it is already less incomprehensible. The technology is based on the principle of sublimation, when a substance under the influence of high temperature "jumps" from a gaseous state immediately into a solid, bypassing the wet stage.

Graverton technology allows you to transfer the pattern to wood, metal, glass, fabric, and the process itself takes place in a certain order:

  1. An image is printed on sublimation paper;
  2. The front side is applied to the object being processed;
  3. Placed in a heat press for a certain time.

A huge number of things can be subjected to artistic processing - from shoes, dishes, fabrics to corporate symbols, puzzles and all kinds of other unexpected things.

The main disadvantage of graverton technology is the need special equipment and its high price:

  • sublimation printer(starting from 500 thousand rubles with kopecks);
  • thermal transfer press(from 9 to 30 thousand rubles).

And since you want to transfer the drawing to a tree at home from time to time, it makes sense to acquire expensive equipment only if you put the matter on a grand scale.

We create for ourselves

With a minimum of tools, you can also figure out how to transfer an image to a tree, no worse than using high-tech equipment. Perhaps the most important thing is to decide on the topic, because it will be, oh, how difficult it is to erase the "nonsense".

There are several rules that will teach you how to transfer a drawing to a tree so that it looks correct:

  1. The work surface must be bright and clean;
  2. The direction of the wood fibers should not spoil the drawing, for example, oblique lines can add photos of extra wrinkles;
  3. The theme with words / numbers is printed in a mirror image (a photo editor will help to rotate the image);
  1. It is desirable to have a digital photograph for scanning, with high quality Images;
  2. On the wooden picture the photo is always facing the tree, so we will not constantly remind you of this.

The first stage of work consists in thinking over two questions - for what purpose and what you will "sketch". So, what you get can be donated, used for decoration, hung on the wall in the form of a funny maxim, used for practical purposes.

An elegant vignette, composition or photograph can be used to decorate not only a keychain, a small sheet of plywood / boards, signs, but also doors, bed backs, window sills, chairs - anything that makes sense to decorate. We present to your attention a few simple, but effective ways how to transfer an image to a tree.

Method one - gratuitous

Free, because you can find on a computer and make prints on a laser printer at work or at a friend's place. There you can also prepare the board by sanding it with fine-grained paper (P 220) or (the staff always has auxiliary personnel - locksmiths and carpenters).

Getting started:

  • find a pattern and increase to the required size, print;
  • put the sheet on the board;
  • iron with a hot iron.

Before transferring the picture to a tree, you can moisten the sheet with acetone so that the pigment goes off better, however, to the detriment of the home atmosphere. It is useful to cover your nose and mouth with a gauze bandage or handkerchief. Usually, this technology is suitable for the subsequent burning of the pattern with a special tool.

Note! Put the carbon paper on the board with the coloring side down, on top of the required drawing and trace with a pencil. The main thing is not to move the paper or carry it by hand, otherwise the board will get dirty. It makes sense if the drawing is small.

Method two - glue

In addition to high-precision technology, source code and a wooden canvas, you will need:

  • ordinary PVA glue;
  • solvent;
  • fine-grained emery;
  • varnish such as Dulux;
  • roller;
  • sponge / long knife;
  • a bit of patience.

Note! Experienced craftsmen it is advised to lighten the image slightly before transferring the photo to the tree, because in finished form colors will be more intense.

  • degrease and / plywood;
  • cover the surface of the photo with a continuous layer of glue;
  • put the stained side on a tree;

  • roll out the sheet with a roller in the manner of smoothing wallpaper, or swiping flat side knife;
  • leave to dry for a day;
  • moisten the sheet with a damp sponge;
  • start slowly and carefully erase the paper with your own hands, or rather, with your fingers;
  • let the work dry;
  • varnish.

Method three - gel

From it you will learn how to transfer a drawing to a tree using an acrylic gel-medium. This modeling paste, used to create a relief surface, costs more than 500 rubles, but it is not worth saving, as well as using expired ones. In the opinion of the masters, a good product is produced by the Raphael firm.

From tools and supplies you will need:

  • photo and tree of the same size;
  • gel medium and a brush to it;
  • roller / knife / ruler;
  • paraffin / matte glue used for decoupage;
  • another paraffin brush.

The working instruction is in many ways similar to the previous one:

  • Apply gel to the board with a brush. The layer should be not thick, but also without bald spots;
  • a photograph is placed on the treated area and smoothed out, expelling air bubbles;
  • leave overnight in a secluded place;
  • roll up the paper, let it dry;
  • cover with paraffin.

We indulge in translations

Wondering how to transfer a photo to wood without gel and glue? An alternative would be a blank decoupage film on which the photograph will be printed.

After getting wet, the substrate is pulled out from under the top film, leaving a juicy pattern in place.

For work you need a skin, white acrylic paint, a plate with water, cotton pads, paper napkins, brushes, marker, patinated varnish.

  1. Sand the surface;
  2. Lightly thin the paint with water and apply the first layer, brushing along;
  3. The second layer, respectively, with transverse strokes. Allow to dry;
  4. Before transferring the picture to a tree, you need to lower it for half a minute in water at room temperature;
  5. Take out, attach to the surface and pull out the base;
  6. Remove excess moisture from the film with blotting movements;
  7. Let it dry and mask the flaws with a marker.
  8. Open with varnish.

Note! You can buy special decoupage napkins. With them, the question of how to transfer a drawing to a tree will not cause any particular difficulties.

In conclusion

The new possibilities of a wood surface used as a basis for a painting or photograph are unusual and evoke a lot of emotions. Familiar images look somewhat different than on paper - softer, more mysterious. Branded Consumables help perpetuate your work, which may outlive the paper version.

The video in this article shows an example of transferring an image to a tree.

If you have any questions about translating an image to a tree, you can ask in the comments to this article.

In this tutorial I will show you 5 different ways print on wood. These are great techniques that allow you to make custom projects like signs, plaques, gifts, or simply brand your creations.

Step 1: Gathering Materials

Materials:

  • pine board
  • Liquitex gel medium

Step 2: setup

I tested 4 methods for transferring a drawing from paper to wood and one method using the technique. On each board I used the same image, which had my logo with a large block of text, picture and text in normal size, so for each type of application it will be visible how well the tree reacts with different options application.

All pictures were printed on my laser printer (not inkjet). I also mirrored the picture so that it was displayed correctly on the tree.

Step 3: Method 1 - acetone

The first method is to use acetone to transfer the toner to the wood. All you need is acetone, paper napkin, nitrile gloves to protect your hands, or you can use your old one. plastic card... When working with acetone, be careful and read the safety instructions.

I put the mirrored image on the plywood and wrapped it for a more secure fit. Then I dipped the napkin in acetone and put it on the picture, pressing it firmly on top.

After a few repetitions, the toner was transferred to the wood and the paper fell away from the wood.

Pros: Very fast, decent image quality, clean process
Cons: Average image quality, acetone is a strong chemical

Step 4: Method 2 - ironing

The next method is to use a regular iron. All you need to do is iron the paper. As in the previous step, I wrapped the paper around the piece of wood and then ironed it, being careful not to move the sheet relative to the wood. I tried to press hard on the iron, and set the iron itself to a high temperature, but it seems to me that the temperature was not high enough.

The picture came out so-so, and it seems to me that this was due to the fact that the iron did not heat the paper to a sufficient temperature. I heard that using wax paper can improve the situation, and some craftsmen also do image transfer using a soldering iron with a special tip for branding.

Pros: the cheapest method, done fairly quickly
Cons: Poor image quality, burning yourself, charring wood or paper

Step 5: Method 3 - polyurethane varnish

The third method is based on the use of polyurethane on water based... I used Polycrylic (this is just the name of the manufacturer, so you can buy any equivalent). You need varnish, an acid brush, a stiff toothbrush, and water.

I applied the polycrystalline with a small brush, trying to create a thin film to keep it wet without becoming a puddle. Then I pressed the paper directly onto the damp polycrystalline and pushed the paper from the center to the edges, removing air trapped under the paper, and then moved the piece of wood to the side, where it dried for about an hour.

After the blank was dry, I moistened it with water and then peeled off as much of the paper as could be removed by hand. Then I took a toothbrush and gently rustled it over the surface until all the remaining paper was cleaned off.

The quality was excellent! Everything except small defect on the letter "F" looked very good. I was really surprised at this way of printing on wood.

Pros: excellent image quality, safe cover water based
Cons: Removing the paper in a rather messy method, takes an hour to dry

Step 6: Method 4 - Liquitex Gel Solvent

The fourth method was a gel solvent. I used Liquitex gloss, foam brush, old plastic card, toothbrush and water.

The process is similar to the one that used varnish, the only difference is that we have a gel in our hands, not a liquid. It is better to work with the gel with a foam, because the brush leaves a lot of bumps and stripes.

I pressed the picture into the gel and blew out the air trapped under the paper, first with my fingers and then with a plastic card. Then I left the blank to dry for 90 minutes, and then scrubbed off the paper with a toothbrush.

This option also looked great, but there were a few pieces of paper left on the wood that could not be scraped off with the brush.

Pros: Excellent image quality, safe water-based gel
Cons: it is more difficult to remove polycrystalline, the surface becomes rough, dries for a long time

Step 7: Method 5 - CNC laser

So, now let's try the technological method. I had access to a Full Spectrum Laser Hobby 20x12 device and used it to apply the same image. Setting up the device is very simple.

Image quality was good as expected. The only area of concern was the photograph, which was difficult for the laser to copy. But the text and logo completely black in the photo looks great.

Pros: excellent detailing of the text and logo, customize, and the machine will do everything for you
Cons: Expensive to buy, difficult to find to rent, does not handle photography very well

Step 8: apply the topcoat and final opinion

I decided to apply on finished work varnish coating to see how the appearance of the products changed and this procedure slightly changed my opinion about each of the methods I tested.

The acetone darkened a lot after varnishing and I liked the final look much more, so I put this result higher than the gel sample.

The iron version ... remained of poor quality.

Polycrilic darkened even more and began to look even better. This is a definite favorite in my ranking.

The gel also darkened, but the surface of the wood did not even out, and the pieces of paper that I could not remove were sticking out noticeably. I had to spend a lot more time to achieve a result similar to polycrystalline.

The laser CNC version almost did not darken, but it became a little more like a burnt wood, the detailing still remained excellent.

Drawing technology

The method is based on thermal transfer of toner and is quite often used for manufacturing printed circuit boards at home.
We will use this method to apply the pattern to the plywood. So let's get started.
First, we need to prepare a drawing and paper.

Drawing

You can download it on our website among the crafts you like, or read how to prepare a drawing yourself in the next article.

Paper

We will need glossy paper, the main quality of which will be a low toner retention coefficient. For example, it might be paper from a glossy magazine, but I personally use a backing paper for the labels. If nothing of the above recommended is at hand, then you can take ordinary paper, this technology will also work.

Printing a drawing

When printing, do not forget that the image will be mirrored, so you need to prepare your layout in advance by "flipping it horizontally". This can be done programmatically or select the appropriate setting in the printer settings, provided that your printer supports this function.

Also, in the settings, you should enable high-quality printing - this will give large quantity toner on the sheet and, as a result, faster transfer of the image onto plywood.

Transfer picture

To transfer the picture, place the printed layout with toner down on the plywood, and slowly smooth out reverse side iron. It takes about one minute to transfer an A4 size drawing.

Iron

You can use a regular iron as a transfer fuser. If you decide to take an iron, which is also used in everyday life, then take care of its safety - use a paper and cloth pad to avoid the formation of carbon deposits on its surface.

As for me, I use an iron for covering aircraft models, it is quite convenient, since you can set the required temperature on it - 190 degrees. The surface of the iron has long been accustomed to various experiments, so I do not use a pad.

Alternatively, to transfer the drawing, you can use construction hair dryer and a roller.

Removing paper

After evenly smoothing the layout with an iron, before removing the paper layer, you should wait a while, allowing the transferred toner to cool down.

When the paper is removed, you should check the lines of the drawing, how successfully they were transferred and, if necessary, add the missing elements with a pencil.
At this stage, the stage of transferring the drawing to plywood is completed.

Conclusion

This technology has one drawback, in pursuit of saving time, the development of a number of important human qualities is missed, such as:
concentration of attention, patience, perseverance, concentration, accuracy, slowness, thoroughness.
For this reason, for beginners, school-age children, I would recommend first trying traditional ways drawing a drawing on plywood:
Carbon-copy translation or template production.
