Then from the lid, using band saw machine, cut out a circle with a diameter of 40 cm.

In a circle with a diameter of 40 cm, which remained from cutting out the bottom cover, cut out the middle according to the diameter of the plastic pipe. This blank will be installed at the top of the device.


For the side wall, the author used transparent polycarbonate. This will allow you to control the operation of the filter and occupancy garbage can. Having rolled up a polycarbonate cylinder, inserted it into the inner hole of the bottom cover. Marked and cut along the joint. I received a cylinder with a diameter of 40 cm and a height of 15 cm.

For the inlet and outlet, the author used a plastic pipe with a diameter of 7.6 cm, as well as two couplings for it.
First, make an inlet. Cuts off a piece of 23 cm from the pipe. Cuts the coupling in half. Cuts out a rectangle from plywood with sides 12.5 and 15 cm. Cuts a hole 8.9 cm in the middle ( outside diameter couplings). Having inserted a pipe into the hole, it fixes it with a coupling on both sides. Seals the seam with hot glue.






A cut piece measuring 12.5 by 20 cm is screwed to the side wall of the rectangle (12.5 cm).




Then the author cuts the pipe and plywood in such a way that the curvature of the cut coincides with the curvature of the cylinder.

Having attached the structure to the installation site, he makes measurements for the manufacture of a vertical support. Cut it out and attach it to the body. Fastens where the seam of the cylinder goes, thus closing it.






Marks on the polycarbonate the location of the inlet cutout. Cut it out with a drill.




Installs the inlet pipe into the hole, fixes it. The seam is sealed with hot glue.


Next, he makes an outlet pipe. Cuts off a piece of pipe 15 cm. Inserts it into the hole in the top cover. Fits a clutch on both sides. Treated with hot glue.




The author made the lower screen from MDF. Screen size 46 cm in diameter, thickness 3 mm. At a distance of 5 cm from the edge draws a circle. Measures an angle of 120 degrees. Trims the strip between the sides of the corner. Screws the screen to the bottom cover in such a way that the cutout starts immediately after the inlet pipe.

When carrying out repair and construction work, a lot of garbage appears. Sawdust, shavings, scraps of materials mixed with dust should be cleaned regularly. Introduction

Wood dust and other technical debris, although it seems harmless at first glance, in fact, they are fraught with many different dangers, both for the master and for the equipment. This happens because:

  1. dust, mixed with the lubricant inside the tool, forms a mixture that is completely unsuitable for lubricating moving parts, resulting in overheating and further breakage
  2. dust can impede the rotation of the moving parts of the tool, which leads to additional loads, overheating and failure,
  3. dust clogs the air ducts designed to ventilate the heated parts of the tool and remove heat from them, as a result of overheating, deformation and failure again.

Thus, the issue of the quality of removal of sawing products and, in general, cleaning of the premises is very acute. Modern power tools are equipped with systems for removing dust and chips directly from the sawing area, which does not allow dust to spread throughout the workshop. Principle of operation

There are a great many different designs of cyclones, but all of them are united by the same principle of operation. All designs of cyclone chip blowers consist of three main parts:

Its design is such that the flow of intake air is directed in a circle and its rotational movement is obtained. Preparatory work

Materials and fasteners

  4. Bucket ("large") plastic 11-26 liters with a hermetically sealed lid.

Making a cyclone filter

Creating a homemade chip blower consists of a number of steps:

Creating a retaining ring and curly insert

It is necessary to cut off the side of the small bucket, which is used to attach the lid. As a result, you should get such a cylinder (well, a little on a cone).

We make the markup - put a small bucket on and draw a line along the edge - we get a circle.

Then we determine the center of this circle (see the school geometry course) and mark out another circle, the radius of which is 30 mm larger than the existing one. Then we mark the ring and curly insert, as it shown on the picture.

Retaining ring installation

We fix the ring on the edge of the small bucket so that we get a rim. Fastening is done with self-tapping screws. It is advisable to pre-drill the holes so as not to split.

We mark the roof of a large bucket. For marking, you need to put the bucket itself on the lid of a large bucket and circle its outline. Marking is best done with a felt-tip pen, as the trace is clearly visible.

It is important to note that all connections must be airtight, respectively, before installing the cover, the connection must be smeared with sealant. You also need to smear the junction of the wooden ring and the small bucket.

Installing the side pipe

The side pipe is made from a sewer outlet of 30 degrees (or 45 degrees). To install it, you need to drill a hole in the top of the small bucket with a crown. Note that the bottom of the small bucket is now the top.

Setting the top entry

To make the top entry, you need to drill a hole in the upper part of the chip cutter (small bucket), that is, in the center of the former bottom.

To securely fix the inlet pipe, use additional element strength in the form of a square blank of 20 mm thickness with a central hole for a 50 mm branch pipe.

This workpiece is fastened from below with four self-tapping screws. Before installation, for tightness, the joint must be smeared with sealant.

The main condition is that the outlet pipe must be located above the inlet. This will allow the debris to sink down, passing only air and fine dust to the outlet. To capture such dust, you can use some homemade filters, for example, fabric or adapt a car filter, this will protect a home-made construction vacuum cleaner from types of debris that are dangerous for the engine.

To create a swirl of the air flow, which is sucked into the cyclone, stick on the surface of the cylinder in a spiral flexible hose or cord made of waterproof material. Such a spiral will increase the efficiency of the cyclone filter. It should be noted that such an addition will only work for the pipe large diameter into which you can easily penetrate with your hands. Input and outlet pipe is fixed in the corresponding holes with sealant, heat shrink, adhesives or pieces of pipe, which are soldered with a soldering iron. The main task of this material is to firmly fix and seal the tubes. The conical part can be strengthened with sealant or glue, since it is unlikely to have to be removed. Through the hole in the truncated cone, the debris will fall into the bin.

In most cases, such a step is quite justified, with the exception of the installation of filters. For a homemade vacuum cleaner, you should by all means avoid installing the notorious HEPA filters. These filters work on the principle of retaining fine dust particles in the pores of the filter itself. Because of this, as the filter fills with debris, suction power and, consequently, the quality of cleaning will gradually be lost. All kinds of attempts to clean such filters do not lead to the expected results, since the dust is not completely blown out, and when washed and washed out, it leads to the processes of decay and the development of bacteria. Purpose and characteristics of cyclones

The cyclone is a specialized air cleaning unit (although similar units are also used as chip extractors, sawdust and other waste disposal agents).

As air purifiers, industrial designs of cyclones should provide suction and dust removal with an efficiency of at least 85 ... 90%, with dust removal of fragments with a size of at least 10 ... 12 microns. They are equipped various designs filters. The most effective are electrostatic precipitators, which simultaneously remove static electricity from dust particles.

The principle of operation of the cyclone is as follows. Air enters the volute-shaped inlet space of the cyclone at a high speed (up to 20 m/s), for which fans are usually used. The air containing dust particles is swirled, after which it enters the conical cavity of the apparatus. Features of the geometric structure of the cyclone cause a gradual increase in the speed of the air flow containing dust and other waste. In the process of this, the heavier dust particles separate from the lighter ones. The former settle to the bottom, while the latter, moving in a cone-shaped space, fall into the dust collector, from where they can be easily removed using a bucket or a sealed container. Purified air is removed to the atmosphere through a pipe.

The number of cyclones, depending on the requirements for the quality of dust removal, can be made different: there are groups of three, four and even eight single cyclones.

The operational requirements for cyclones include the following parameters:

  1. allowable dispersion of particles that enter the cyclone, microns.
  2. process efficiency, which is expressed in the maximum weight concentration of particles after dust removal, in g/mm 3 ;
  3. cyclone performance, m 3 /h;
  4. boundary temperature of air or gas entering the cyclone mouth (more typical for gas cleaning systems than dust removal systems) - usually up to 400 ... 600 ° C;
  5. internal diameter of the cyclone, mm.

In addition to purely constructive requirements, there are also conditions for the high-quality installation of air cleaning devices. For example, when the gaps in the air duct connections are exceeded, air leakage often occurs, in which the performance of separating dust from air is sharply reduced. The allowable value of suction should not be more than 6 ... 8%.

Cyclones not only remove dust from the surrounding air, but can also supply clean air into the room.

Household cyclone design

There are no universal cyclones for various cleaning operations. For example, a chip blower should have increased pipe wall strength to prevent premature wear. With regard to a cyclone designed to collect and remove sawdust, it is important to provide for minimal losses in the suction ducts. Providing a cyclone for the purpose of air purification from cement dust arising from construction work, special attention is paid to the design of filters.

In domestic conditions, cyclones are considered the most versatile, purifying the air from coarse dust. By changing the design of the filters, such devices can be made for dust removal purposes, as a chip extractor, for cleaning the air from sawdust in a woodworking workshop (for example, at an existing sawmill).

The components of this unit are:

  • body - includes a conical and cylindrical parts, and the shape of the conical part has a predominant effect on the quality of the process;
  • branch pipe - one or more, where the source polluted air enters;
  • exhaust pipe designed to remove dust-free air;
  • inlet filter (or their system) as a chip extractor;
  • receiving bucket;
  • drive motor;
  • fan.

All of the listed parts / assemblies can be purchased or made by hand.

Motor selection

Since a home-made cyclone is installed in the workshop, the main parameter of the engine is its power and the number of revolutions of the rotor. In the presence of a fan, the engine power does not matter much, since dust particles are still in a working machine, sawmill, etc. will not hit. However, the power and diameter of the volute of the cyclone must be interconnected. With a snail wheel diameter of up to 300 ... 350 mm, a high-speed (required!) Engine up to 1.5 kW is quite suitable. With smaller diameters, the power may be lower, but the cleaning performance will also decrease. Therefore, if there is a metalworking machine in the workshop, an engine from 1 kW is accepted.

The power of the electric motor increases significantly if you plan to equip it yourself homemade device outside the premises. Free space will increase, but the cleaning efficiency will decrease, mainly due to losses in the ducts. It is also worth noting that in the cold season, such a home-made cyclone will effectively “pull” heat from the workshop.

A good option should be to recognize the purchase of an electric motor complete with a receiving snail, the number of which determines the consumer capabilities of a home-made air purification system. The most common parameters of snails for domestic use and recommended electric motors for them are shown in the table:

The systems are supplied with rubber vibration isolators. They are able to create a working pressure of 0.8 kPa and above.

When choosing (or making with your own hands) a snail, preference must be given to a radial air intake pattern than a tangential one.

In the latter case, unproductive losses increase for a self-made snail, and the inertia of the particle selection method for the variant with a chip ejector will be very low.

When choosing an engine, it must be taken into account that the air velocity in the device cannot be less than 2.5 ... 3 m / s. With unsatisfactory cleaning, the elements of a home-made cyclone as a chip extractor (filter, bucket) are quickly clogged with chips, sawdust and other small waste.

Manufacturing of cyclone elements

On specialized Internet forums, you can find drawings of all the components of the unit that are available in order to make them yourself. From improvised means, an alteration of a household (or better, an industrial) vacuum cleaner is often made. Additionally required:

  • a set of hoses made of translucent corrugated material (this will facilitate visual control of dust particles that have settled inside). For a chip blower, rubber hoses are more practical;
  • a soundproof box that will perform two functions - it will provide a reduction in the noise level in the workshop, and additional protection of all machines and power tools located there from static electricity periodically accumulated by dust. To this end, the box can be made with your own hands from plywood, and from the inside you can finish it with any type of sound insulator;
  • air ducts for purified air: they are assembled with their own hands from a thin aluminum sheet, and are interconnected by folds;
  • waste collection container - can be made from a conventional construction bucket with a capacity of 20 liters or more, which is sealed with a corrugated hose with the body of a home-made cyclone;
  • a filter (a filter from trucks can be used), which is installed on the outlet pipe.

A vacuum cleaner converted with their own hands for the needs of dust removal is checked: first on Idling, driving ordinary air through the system, and then with the connection of the vacuum cleaner to a running machine.
