Positioning

This model has not undergone any changes in market positioning compared to its prototype Sony Ericsson W580. The company expects an audience between the ages of 15 and 24. At the same time, it is emphasized that the social component of the phone for such young people is more important than experiments in the field of design, the device should be calm. Based on this positioning, it becomes clear why the kit included headphones with a second connector for an additional headset. You've probably seen young people on public transport when they listen to one player and share one pair of headphones. Each has one earpiece. There is no quality, but the joint listening to music, read the social role, is fulfilled. Let me leave out the arguments that often the second pair of headphones will not be available, and the presence of the second connector is an opportunity to rarely give a chance to enjoy the same music at the same time. For example, a couple in love on a trip. Good decision, you can only praise for it.

In the segment of music sliders, the situation has changed dramatically over the past year. While there were no direct competitors for Sony Ericsson W580, for the current model it is Nokia 5610 XpressMusic, which is positioned exactly for the same segment. The model came out earlier and has already managed to drop somewhat in value, which makes it attractive. Below we will compare these solutions, but for now we will note that the presence of such a competitor makes the positions of Sony Ericsson W595 weaker. Playing in a small market niche, the company does not give an excessive advantage in something to defeat a competitor, and the size of the niche due to the presence of two models does not increase significantly. Rather, we can talk about direct competition between these devices. As a result, the success of one means less sales for the other. There is a simple principle here: "Whoever got up first, that and the slippers." This is exactly the way Nokia played, although there are a number of undeniable advantages on the side of the Sony Ericsson product that can persuade young buyers in its favor.

Design, dimensions, controls

The model initially appears on the market in Active Blue, later other colors will be available, for example, Cosmopolitan White, Jungle Gray, Ruby Black, Lava Black.

Especially for the Orange operator, the company releases a modification of this model with the s index - W595s. The device differs in color scheme, speaker grilles, front panel. The menu view, preset themes are also more in line with the operator. There are no other major differences in the models.

The phone measures 100x47x14.1 mm and weighs 104 grams. Average dimensions for the market, but the device feels pleasantly heavy, the plastic is not that light, which was present in Sony Ericsson W580, we can say that the device is more solid. The combination of materials is very ambiguous. Front panel made of matte plastic, inexpensive. The sides and back of the device are velvety (soft touch). The chrome-plated rims are pleasant, how good they will be in use - it is unknown, they are resistant to small items and carrying in a pocket with other items. The device is tightly knocked down, the automatic adjustment mechanism is a little taut. The opening sound is not too melodic, the halves disperse with a rustle.

The interface connector was placed on the left side of the device, on the right side there is a volume rocker and a Walkman button. Speaker grids are visible at the ends. The camera is located on the back surface. There is a light indicator above the display. The strap hole is on the back of the device, which is somewhat unusual.

The location of the microphone is unusual; when opened, you can see it to the right of the keyboard. On the right side there is a channel for talking on the phone when closed. My advice is to open the device in the street, otherwise your interlocutor will not always hear you well.

Display

The display shows up to 262K colors at a resolution of 240x320 pixels (diagonal 2.2 inches, 34x46 mm, TFT). This allows you to display on the screen up to 9 lines of text and up to three service lines for most modes; for viewing Internet resources, when working with e-mail, with messages, it is possible to display a larger number of lines due to a smaller font size. The quality of the screen is excellent, the colors are vivid, bright, it behaves well in the sun. In terms of the screen, this model is quite comparable with modern solutions, there are no drawbacks.

Keyboard

The main problem with the W580 was the keys that break apart and the company used the wrong type of solvent. The numeric keypad in W595 is similar to the previous one, these are thin plates on a substrate, they are figuratively cut. There will be problems with them or not - only time will tell. Now it is impossible to judge this without real use by various users, how lucky you are.

The travel of the keys is small, they are tight. Typing is not very pleasant, the short stroke of pressing affects. The backlighting is white, it is uneven, the left row is better illuminated.

The block of function keys also does not have a good stroke when pressed, the buttons here do not make a very pleasant impression to the touch, cheap plastic spoils the perception of the device. This is the most controversial point in the design. They saved on a penny, but the impression is spoiled.

Battery

The back cover has no backlash and is easy to open. Inside is a lithium-polymer battery, its capacity is 950 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 385 hours in standby mode and up to 9 hours in talk mode. In the conditions of Moscow networks the device worked on average for two and a half days under moderate load (up to an hour of talks, about 30 minutes of games, 20 minutes of using the browser). A heavy load means that you have to recharge the device daily. At the same time, a very small number of calls means that the phone can work up to 3-4 days, but this is an unlikely scenario. In European networks, the operating time will be at least twice as high in all modes, due to better network coverage. Music playing time is up to 24 hours.

Data transfer

With a USB connection, you forcibly have to choose whether to access files on the memory card, this is the data transfer mode, or continue to work with the phone, or turn on the Print mode (printing photos). In the first case, the phone turns off, you see the memory card and phone memory. Despite the declared support for USB 2.0, the data transfer rate does not exceed 500 Kb / s. In the second case, there are various USB settings for accessing the network, the phone acts as a modem.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth in this model is version 2 and supports EDR, in the menu you can set the increased power saving mode. The A2DP profile is also supported, which allows the use of wireless stereo headphones. The model supports the following profiles:

  • Basic Imaging Profile
  • Basic Printing Profile
  • Dial-Up Networking Profile
  • File Transfer Profile
  • Generic Access Profile
  • Generic Object Exchange Profile
  • Handsfree Profile
  • Headset Profile
  • JSR-82 Java API
  • Object Push Profile
  • Personal Area Network Profile
  • Serial Port Profile
  • Service Discovery Application Profile
  • Synchronization Profile
  • SyncML OBEX binding

Memory, memory cards

The phone has about 40 MB of memory available to the user, the set also includes a 2 GB M2 card. Hot swap of memory cards is supported, the maximum card capacity is 16 GB.

Performance

Typical performance for the latest generation of the company's devices, positively differs from most models on the market. There are no restrictions on the size of the JAR file, the size of HEAP is from 512 KB to 1.5 MB.

Camera

The phone has a 3.2-megapixel camera with a CMOS matrix. No autofocus. The device supports four possible resolutions - 2048x1536, 1632x1224, 1280x960, 640x480 pixels. There are two types of image compression - Normal, Fine. Most of the photos in the examples are in Fine quality. The camera interface is horizontal, there is no side key, it is the OK button.

The camera settings look like this:

  • Shutter sound... Choice of one of four shutter sounds, you can turn off the sound.
  • White balance... Choose between automatic mode, as well as Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Cloudy.
  • Effects... Several effects can be applied to pictures, namely: Negative, Sepia, Black & White.
  • Timer- is activated for a certain time to take pictures of yourself.
  • Night mode designed for shooting at night or in low light conditions. The noise in the photos increases, the shutter speed increases (you cannot move the camera, otherwise you will get a blurry picture).
  • Shooting mode... Normal mode is taking normal photographs. Burst mode (Burst 4) - taking 4 pictures at once, a series. Panorama - taking panoramic images, a very interesting mode that allows you to take unusual photos. The last mode - taking pictures using frames, the photo resolution is automatically reduced.

In shooting mode, the phone's screen plays the role of a viewfinder, the movement of the picture on the screen is smooth, everything is seen very well. Using the numeric keys, you can quickly switch between various functions and shooting parameters, which greatly speeds up the operation of the camera.

New camera functions include adding a position, that is, information about the location where the photo was taken. This function can be disabled from the camera menu. In the absence of a built-in GPS-receiver, this function is not so pleasant and interesting.

Video

Video can be recorded in two resolutions (320x240, 176x144), file format - 3GP. The duration of videos can be specified as limited (up to 10 seconds) and unlimited. The quality of the videos is average, it does not boggle the imagination.

Preinstalled programs, games, themes

It makes no sense to examine in detail all the features of the software, this is the A200 platform, which is perfectly described in a separate article, here we will focus on the features of this device.

The device has 5 different themes, all of them use flash animation to one degree or another, they can change the appearance of the main menu, for example, to cyclical or to a more familiar matrix one. The topics look interesting. The main menu can be made cyclical, circular, or display one icon at a time.

The phone has four games, one - Extreme Air Snowboard - is a good emulator. The second Racer Fever GT game is a regular race. QuadraPop needs no description, the latest Guitar Rock Tour game. Ridiculously, this particular game will be preinstalled on the Nokia 5800 in a number of markets. Funny intersection.

Applications are represented by several programs. One of them - Comeks Strips - allows you to create a semblance of comics from your photos, which will be interesting for young people. The second program is World Clock 3D, which shows the time in different cities of the world. Finally, the last program is Rock Bobblehead. It demonstrates a rock singer who can be controlled by tilting the phone in different directions. Someone rightly noted that the program has no practical meaning. If you look in the forehead, then everything is correct. But do not forget that any program can be installed in this phone as a screen saver, and then the meaning immediately appears. In particular, a screensaver in the form of time in different capitals of the world, which replace each other on the screen, or a rock singer whom you can control. It's nice.

Walk Mate is an application for counting the number of steps during the day, week that you have taken.

Converter - converts one value to another.

Music Mate 5 - allows you to play different instruments of your choice by tilting the phone in different directions. I have come across virtuosos who are able to "play" complex melodies in this way.

YouTube - access to the mobile version of the service. You can watch videos in full screen, search. See the rating. The quality leaves much to be desired in most cases; in the absence of WiFi, data transmission is quite expensive, unless you have unlimited Internet on your phone.

Musical possibilities

The player of the third version, which is the most complex on the market today, in contrast to the previous models, has a new representation of equalizers, which is more convenient and simple. The rest of the device has all the characteristics of Sony Ericsson W910i.

SensMe... In addition to the standard set of Walkman functions of the third version, the Sony Ericsson W595 also has a SensMe option. This is a playlist that includes various songs and categorizes them by type (playback speed, mood). You do not need to add tags to songs, Sony Media Manager is used for this purpose, it analyzes all the melodies on your computer and adds the necessary information. Another thing is that such a process takes time. For example, the analysis of about 1.5 GB of music in our case took about 20-25 minutes. The advantage of Media Manager is that it can work with memory cards; the phone itself is not required to be connected. The program can also convert photos, videos for the phone, its capabilities are wide enough.

Is the SensMe function interesting? Undoubtedly. On the melody map, you see the location of each track with dots, you can move between them, and a certain point is highlighted, and it starts playing. However, several points hit the sight at once, they are also melodies. By pressing enter, you can create a playlist with melodies similar in mood, playback speed, and so on. It is very pleasant for certain moods in life.

However, you must understand that the function will work well only if you listen to music of various genres, as well as a lot of it on your phone. If you add a couple of three albums by the same artist, then you will most likely see that they are all in the same part of the map. The meaning of the function is lost. It also makes sense to use cards with a capacity of 2 GB and above. Only on such a volume will such playlists become diverse and will delight you.

Shake control... The full version of the player control with shaking is used. It happens very simply. Press and hold the Walkman button, and then shake the device, when moving forward it skips to the next song, backward - respectively, to the previous one. Just shaking - random choice of composition. When performing an action, there is a feedback, the device vibrates. A novelty of this model is the ability to adjust the sound volume, you have to shake the device up to raise it, or down to lower it.

You shouldn't think that the function will find widespread use. It will be of interest only to those who are engaged in running, other sports and want to be able to quickly change the composition. Young people may be interested in trying it in action and nothing more. It is more convenient to connect a remote control and use it to control playback.

Of the new filters, it is worth noting the "time machine", it plays songs for a certain year. From the more traditional ones - the list of the most played, the least played.

The two speakers in this unit are loud. Well spaced apart and really deliver a good, clean sound. For young people, this can be a very powerful argument in favor of this apparatus.

General description of Walkman 3.0... Fundamental differences from the previous version of Walkman 2.0 include support for DRM 2.0, as well as support for MTP, which allows you to directly transfer songs from Windows Media Player.

The device finds all files and directories on the memory card, extracts information from metadata (ID3 tags). Supported audio formats are MP3, AAC, AAC +, E-AAC +, WAV, WMA and m4a. There are no bit rate restrictions for MP3 files, you can also upload files from VBR. The company recommends using 192 Kbps files.

In the music library, all stored music is divided according to several criteria:

  • Performers- the list of artists is given in alphabetical order, there is a quick search by artist name.
  • Albums- sorting by album name, search is also available.
  • Recordings- a general list of all melodies, sorting occurs by the name of the song or, if it is absent in the metadata, by the name of the file.
  • genre Is sorting by type of music direction, for example, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues and so on.
  • My playlists- playlists created by the user, they can be created both in the device itself and on a computer when viewing the contents of the memory in the USB Mass Storage mode; when updating the library, the device also finds them.

Unlike the second version, all transitions are made horizontal, but outwardly decorated a little differently. This does not cause any difficulties. All navigation is carried out with a few touches, and in each list there is a search by several letters.

The mode of repeat playback of one or all tracks, random playback is available. Progressive rewind, holding down the key changes the rewind step. In the standard, basic player, you cannot select visualization, that is, animation in place of the album picture. Only the image associated with the album.

If you have music playing and you are in standby mode, then launching the Media section will immediately lead to the player item.

The quality of music playback has not changed in any direction, everything is exactly the same as on the previous models. Equalizer seven-band, you can set your own settings, turn on the expansion of the stereo base. Equalizer settings are now available only when headphones are connected, pictures set for default equalizers are clearly displayed.

As a standard option, there is TrackID, there is a built-in FM radio with RDS support (for a detailed description, go to the description of the A200 platform).

Playback quality... The bundled headphones have a good quality of music reproduction. The model, in my opinion, is no worse or better than other representatives of the Walkman family. There is a volume control in 15 positions, which is quite enough. The device plays loudly, subjectively the model seemed to me better than the same Sony Ericsson W910i, the difference is felt, and it is for the better.

Comparison with Sony Ericsson W580

The owners of the previous device will be interested to see what has changed in the functions of the device, what improvements are present.

It clearly follows from the table that the new model, while retaining the cost of the previous solution at the time of its release, wins in all respects, except that the memory card slot was moved under the battery compartment cover, there are no side light indicators. In all other aspects, the novelty is significantly superior to its predecessor. Unfortunately, the company has abandoned the sports application, it is being replaced by WalkMate, the program simply counts the number of your steps. It is not as interesting as the previous solution. But the number of additional programs in the W595 is much larger, this solution is more interesting.

Comparison with Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

These two models are direct competitors with all the ensuing consequences. At the time of the appearance of Sony Ericsson W595, the cost of the device from Nokia had already decreased, and, accordingly, it looks a little more attractive. But is it that simple? Let's take a look at the performance comparison table.

Sony Ericsson W595 Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

Not twin brothers, but very similar solutions. In both cases, there is no 3.5 mm jack on the case; you must use a headset cable. The sound quality is better in Nokia 5610, while functionally the player is richer in W595. The advantages of the device from Sony Ericsson include a built-in motion sensor, screen rotation depending on how you hold it. In short, the device wins by a significant margin in terms of the functionality of the music player. Quite good stereo speakers can be called a serious plus, they are very loud and sounding well.

Recording in VGA-resolution, a flash for the camera, plus a front-facing camera cannot be called a big advantage in Nokia's product, these are secondary functions for the majority. At the same time, the difference in the cost of the two solutions is minimal. The package bundle is comparable, Sony Ericsson wins, since the card is larger in volume.

The difficult question is what to choose for the buyer. On the side of the product from Sony Ericsson there is a novelty, a greater number of functions and an adequate price for its segment. Considering that Nokia 5610 will be on the market for about half a year, the Sony Ericsson W595 can be considered an obvious win. The withdrawal of the same solution from Nokia is planned only for the second quarter of 2009. Accordingly, until this moment Nokia 5610 remains in the niche between Sony Ericsson W580 and Sony Ericsson W595, it remains exactly in the middle. Outperforming the younger model in a number of parameters, it loses to the older one. In my opinion, the choice is obvious.

Impressions

The model did not present any surprises, a moderately strong, well perceptible vibration alert, a very loud call signal, this is the distinguishing feature of the device. Good connection quality, the disadvantages include the need to open the device on a noisy street, the microphone can blow out, but the minus is nominal and nothing more.

In October, the cost of the phone will be 320-340 Euro (in Russia it is about 11-12 thousand rubles). Against the background of the junior model, which is not being removed from production, the device will look good, attract with novelty, minimal price difference, but more functionality. The solution turned out to be interesting, especially given the absence of a large number of similar models in the slider form factor. The first deliveries will include blue and white devices (Active Blue, Cosmopolitan White). This model turned out to be one of the few that are well balanced in terms of cost, in the line from Sony Ericsson, with a good price / quality ratio. If you are looking at sliders for a child, or if you are a little old, then this is a good choice.

Introduction

We have already met with the W595, when it was still at the prototype stage, this time it is more serious - we have a serial sample in our hands and we are ready to test it. The difference between the W580 and its predecessor lies not only in the refinement of the design. The 2.2-inch QVGA display and 3.2-megapixel camera make it quite attractive, even without considering all the amenities of the Walkman series. The presence of a modern appearance and intriguing characteristics make the appearance of the Sony Ericsson W595 in the Walkman family at an opportune moment.

Key features of Sony Ericsson W595:

  • Quad-band GSM and 3G with HSDPA support;
  • 2.2 inch TFT display with QVGA resolution, showing 256K colors;
  • 3 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth with A2DP and USBv2.0;
  • Accelerometer for automatic image rotation;
  • 40 MB of built-in memory and an entrance for M2 memory cards (2GB card included);
  • Walkman 3.0 music player with Shake Control (shake control) and SensMe (allows you to create playlists that match your mood);
  • FM radio with RDS;
  • Multitasking support;
  • Smart dialing function (fast dialing by the first digits of the phone number from the contact list);
  • Convenient console, good sliding mechanism;
  • Stereo speakers;
  • 3.5 mm headphone and headset input.

The main disadvantages of the Sony Ericsson W595:

  • Quite small display by modern standards;
  • The camera is not equipped with autofocus;
  • Small opportunities in the field of video recording;
  • No protection for camcorder lenses and flash;
  • There is no application for viewing documents;
  • Poor quality battery cover;
  • There is no camera on the front panel for making video calls.

Includes Sony Ericsson W595

The Sony Ericsson W595 box contains everything you might need while using your phone. The set includes: charger, USB cable and headset.

Although the Stereo headphones are of the bass-reflex type, they look a bit modest. The headphones come with a stereo adapter that has two 3.5 mm inputs, which allows you to connect two pairs of headphones at once and, thus, listen to music with your friend.

To top it all off, the set with the Sony Ericsson W595 comes with a 2GB M2 memory card, which most users will consider sufficient to accommodate their favorite music. The rest of the box is occupied by instructions. The software version 4.5 is installed, but it constantly updates it efficiently. You can update the software either yourself or by contacting the service - repair of cell phones, it literally costs 200-300 rubles.

Counting on the same success as the W580, the W595 has the same design features and superior interface. Metal inserts and elastic surface of the back and side planes of the phone make it really comfortable to handle and give it an aesthetic look. Symmetrical sloping upper and lower surfaces reminding us of the good old W580 and even more ancient, but nevertheless cool Sony Ericsson W910, we liked it.

With dimensions of 100x47x14 mm and a weight of 104 grams, this phone will easily fit in your pocket. The display with a diagonal of 2.2 inches, QVGA resolution, displaying 262K colors occupies most of the front panel and is a significant plus for Sony Ericsson W595. This screen boasts a crisp, saturated picture with excellent levels of brightness and contrast, reminiscent of the W902 we reviewed recently.

2.2 inch QVGA display phone

The keys located below the display are analogous to Sony Ericsson W902 in terms of functionality, but this time they are much larger and therefore more convenient to use.

The keypad becomes accessible after opening the phone by means of a slide.

In general, it is quite comfortable to use, but lacks sensitivity a little. The keys are large and the rows are well spaced, making it easy to type without looking at the keyboard. The keys feel solid, so the infamous W580 keyboard, with its fragile keys, is a thing of the past.

Sony Ericsson W595 keyboard. Photo: sotmarket.ru

The Walkman key is located on the right side of the W595 and provides access to the same options as on the W902: launches the Walkman player and activates the Shake control function. It should be noted that the size of this key is smaller than we would like, it is not very convenient to press, but you can get used to it.

The Sony Ericsson W595 is equipped with large and powerful stereo speakers, each located on the top and bottom of the phone. This arrangement is specially designed for listening to music when the phone is lying on a flat surface. Due to the fact that the Sony Ericsson logo does not protrude above the rear surface, the phone lies flat and stable on flat surfaces.

The three megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone. Unlike the W902, the Sony Ericsson W595 lacks a flash for high-quality shooting in the evening. Add fixed focus to that and you realize that photography was not a priority in the making of this phone. And as you might guess, there is also no protective lens cap. However, don't be disappointed, with the W595 you can still get some pretty good shots.

The battery cover fits snugly against the back of the phone case. The only thing to notice is that it is quite difficult to open. To open it, you need to put a lot of force on its upper right corner, while it will bend quite a lot before giving in. The plastic on the back is thin and can crack with frequent manipulation, just like on our test sample. Let's hope you don't have to change your SIM or M2 cards too often.

After you disassemble the battery cover, you will find a 950mAh BST-33 lithium polymer battery underneath it. Claimed battery life: 9 hours of talk time and 385 hours of standby.

Conclusion

The Sony Ericsson W595 is a very powerful mid-range music phone. Of course, here you have to think about when choosing between the Walkman and Cyber-shot series (autofocus and flash guaranteed) from Sony Ericsson.

The image quality on the display is quite satisfactory for us, we have no complaints about this.

As for the price (200 Euro), the phone is highly overpriced, it cannot compete with Sony Ericsson C902 and W760 similar in price. So, we are parting with this phone, hoping for a more reasonable price and positive impressions.

: A direct replacement for the popular among young people W580i perfectly fits the definition of a youth phone for the masses. The less you are interested in all kinds of little things and product details, the more you like this phone. However, let's start with the arguments.

Introduction

The origins of the Sony Ericsson Walkman music phones in the middle price range can be looked for no later than 2006, of course, if you do not take into account the well-established by that time and which could not boast of any interesting form factor. But after them there was an announcement of two interesting clamshells with a price of up to $ 500, and both of them were positioned with a clearly oriented youth audience, and more specifically, we are talking about and. We are interested in just the last of them, and not so much because of the presence of a musical sub-brand, but because of the adjacent positioning in the blurred segment of sports solutions. To do this, the company has created a significant emphasis on the pedometer and the adjacent line of accessories, although the phone was bought not for these functions, but for a bright design and an adequate price.

Last year, to replace two paired clamshells, sliders were already announced, each of which you could already read in the reviews on our website. Both models were entrenched in the online media as problematic solutions with massive keyboard defects, although sales statistics clearly indicate that these very reviews never reached their target audience. And if it thwarted the main demand only in the spring of this year, then the model was on sale steadily throughout the fall of 2007. What was interesting about this slider that differentiated it from other competitive offers? Of course, this is Sony Ericsson's proprietary design and a pedometer, while musical capabilities and an attractive bundle for its price already played the role of confirming the buyer's choice. Indeed, if you look at the proposals of other manufacturers in the fall of last year, you can distinguish from obvious competitors just as problematic in terms of assembly, and at the same time, Samsung sliders, which are similar in price, do not fall under the criterion of a bright attractive design. It turns out that the demand for the W580i cannot be attributed only to impulsive purchases, especially since many owners of the device began to study in advance a possible announcement of a successor this summer, and the emergence of information about the W595 for many has become akin to the factor of choosing a replacement.

It's funny, but if you try to compare the chain of successive, at first glance, models of Sony Ericsson W710i, W580i and W595, the last two products will turn out to be not at all as similar as it might seem at first glance, and the point is not only in the development trends of the company's lineup and the appearance of ... Over the past 2 years, the very approach to this niche of the company's product line has changed, which resulted in a gradual departure from sports functions linked to an active lifestyle, towards a mass buyer who wants to get, first of all, a bright slider with good musical capabilities. But what we get in the end, it would be more appropriate to say a little later, while now it's better to turn our gaze towards Sony Ericsson W595, since its appearance organically combines the common features of the company's products, significantly diluting them with interesting moments.

Appearance

The first glance at the Sony Ericsson W595 instantly makes many think about the boring simplicity of the phone, whose appearance, on the contrary, should attract the attention of those around with its unusual layout. If we look at the front panel, we will find the usual bevel to the bottom, as well as the navigation key with the player's letters. But as soon as you look up, the visual resemblance to the predecessor will fall to the bottom, just like the smooth mirrored bevel of the upper edge. It's hard to say what these large bevels of the front of the case resemble, but after a couple of days of use, you get used to them so that the W580i seems like a boring clumsy solution, in comparison with these folds, decorated with bright edging from the end.

So, the W595 is made in a slider form factor with a case dimensions of 100 x 47.2 x 14.6 mm, while the front half of the case is traditionally shorter than the main part, and its length is 93.2 mm. Outwardly, the phone does not look as bright as its predecessor, but this simplification of the forms directly affected the tactile impressions.

In the hand the device is much nicer and more monolithic than the W580i, for which it is worth saying thanks not only to the millimeter plastic of the case with a tight fit of all panels, but also to the characteristic surface painting, in our case, in white with a fine rough texture. Alas, the impression from the tight assembly is somewhat overshadowed by the back cover, due to the construction it starts to creak when the phone is squeezed in the hand after a week of use. It is up to you to decide how critical this factor is, but we will continue the descriptions with a moment associated with a pleasant feeling of heaviness of the case, although its weight is a little more than 105 grams. This moment crosses out the chest pocket of a shirt from the possible places of wearing, which is not surprising, given how inorganically the colors of the W595 case are combined with the business style.

We will begin the description of the front surface with a conveniently located slot for the earpiece, protected from dust by a fine mesh. Despite the fact that the slot is located right in front of the bevel of the surface, there is no addiction or discomfort in the first days of using the phone. A light sensor is also located next to the speaker, slightly adjusting the display backlight level, but not affecting the keyboard.

Slightly below, the area of milky white plastic is disturbed by a slightly recessed insert of dense transparent plastic, whose dimensions are only a couple of millimeters larger than the 2.2-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels located under it. The matrix used and the backlight controller are identical to those used in the C702, which means that we are dealing with a color temperature close to the optimum, providing a slight drift of black to gray tones. Insufficiently deep black color is the only objective disadvantage of the screen, since the white balance and the elaboration of the entire palette of 262 thousand color shades deserve purely positive marks, even in comparison with phones of the upper price range.

Comfortable viewing angles of the screen are about 160 degrees in both planes, and it is quite difficult to find fault with the behavior of the screen in the sun, since the image fades only by a third, and the sharpness does not change at all.

A centimeter below the screen is the navigation block of the keyboard, which consists of glossy keys of the same color as the body. Thanks to the millimeter elevation of each of the buttons, as well as comfortable bevels instead of spacing, a comfortable level of tactility is provided for both a four-way navigation key with an inscribed confirmation button, and soft keys combined in an arc shape with buttons for calling Activity Menu and deleting C. Naturally, formed by paired keys the space does not go to waste, and it houses the buttons for receiving and rejecting a call, and the latter also plays the role of a power button. All keys have a rather tight average travel with a silent indistinct click, and pressing the navigation key to the left and right is not felt at all.

There are no dedicated stops for opening the slider on the case, although the protruding navigation block of tight keys does a good job of this role, allowing you to push the softly sliding half of the case up / down. The slider mechanism is based on a thin sheet steel slide, as in the predecessor W580i. The differences between the mechanisms lie in the use of an improved spring of adjustment, in any case, in the W595 it is distinguished by tight actuation and soft adjustment, but the backlash of the halves is not observed both in the open and in the closed position of the slider.

Opening the case, we find something that became the subject of discussion on the forums a year ago, namely the slightly protruding flat keys of the digital block, as before, made of a thin plastic cover and the membrane itself. First of all, your humble servant began to enthusiastically press the edges of each of the keys, expecting to see the same crack in the center as in the S500i, W580i. As you can see in the images below, the keyboard tolerates such presses more than calmly, for which thanks to the bounding inner frame on the case, against which the edges of the keys rest when pressed. As for the main points related to the keys, here we are dealing with a good spacing of the buttons, which provides quite comfortable blind dialing, but for writing messages in the same manner, flat protruding plates may be inconvenient for most. The travel of each of the buttons is soft, but relatively short, but a clear click with a pleasant mechanical click is more like a keyboard.

Speaking of the slider keyboard, one cannot fail to note the comfortable pressing of the keys of the upper and lower horizontal row, and the white backlighting of all buttons with the number keys going to match the color of the case is also worth mentioning. To the right of the edge of keys 6 and 9 there is also a microphone, for comfortable use of which there is a large groove on the right end.

The description of the side elements of Sony Ericsson W595 should be started from the top and bottom ends, since they are almost identical in appearance. Above and below the body there are wide slots with a decorative grille recessed inside. At the bottom, the grille covers one of the two polyphonic speakers, while the upper slot only plays a decorative role of symmetry.

On the left side surface, it is worth noting the familiar Fast Port - a connector for connecting wired accessories, and the bundle comes with a funny HPM-64 Dual headset, equipped with one set of in-ear headphones and two 3.5 mm jacks for headphones. One can talk for a long time about the social role of such an accessory, but given the young target audience of the W595, it is difficult to call such an accessory irrelevant.

The right side is notable for a long protruding platform with volume control keys inscribed in it and a branded silver player button. The volume control does not cause any complaints for both right-handers and left-handers, and all thanks to the deep hole in the center of the rocker and the soft key stroke with a clear click.

Moving on to the description of the rear surface, let us immediately turn our gaze to the hole of the second polyphonic speaker from the upper edge, so that the decorative slit on the upper edge is only a few millimeters from the actual sound source. Next to the loudspeaker hole, there is also a small 3.2 megapixel camera peephole without autofocus optics, which allows us to assume in absentia the similarity of the final images with those that can be obtained using a similar camera W890i.

Most of the rear surface acts as a battery cover, which will take considerable effort to remove for the first week of use. In the lower part of the case, it is worth noting a small recess for attaching a strap, but all other elements are already hidden under the lid.

The Sony Ericsson W595 uses a standard 950 mAh lithium-polymer battery BST-33. The phone lasts about two and a half days from one charge with half an hour of calls a day, three hours of listening to music and half an hour of games. The results are quite typical, and the battery charging time is the classic 1 hour 30 minutes.

Right under the battery compartment there is a SIM-card slot, the main difference from analogs being the width of the groove for the card, thanks to which many cards will fit into the slot almost tightly, and only nippers will help to remove them. Next to the slot for installing the SIM-card, there is also a slot for M2-memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB. The standard package comes with a 2 GB card, which may seem difficult to extract only in the first days of using the phone.

User interface

In standby mode, the corners of the top of the screen are the traditional five-level indicators of the signal strength and battery charge. Between them is a field for various system indicators, be it missed events, notification of Bluetooth activity, or silent alert mode. The running Java application indicator has been changed to an icon resembling the Activity Menu symbol.

Below the screen, the names of the operator and the active base station can be displayed, and at the bottom of the screen - the date, digital clock, and the timer countdown, if it is running. At the bottom of the screen, there are three shortcut key labels that cannot be reassigned. To call the functions you are interested in, you can use the deviations of the navigation key, to which you can assign the call of most functions, including Java midlets. If four quick launch shortcuts are not enough for you, you can use the shortcuts tab in the Activity Menu. In addition to bookmarks of shortcuts in the active menu, there are classic bookmarks of the favorite WEB-browser, missed events and running applications.

The main menu consists of 12 icons, it is not so easy to describe the display of them unambiguously. The updated version of the A200 provides the ability to quickly change the appearance of the menu, regardless of the selected skin. The icons were carefully redrawn, greatly simplifying the graphics. The icons have become noticeably simpler, and the graphics resemble those used in Siemens CX65. Along with a slight increase in the size of each of the icons, the designers managed to get rid of the cursors, the smoothness of the animation of which the first phones of the K series became famous.

In addition to the classic representation in the form of a 3 x 4 matrix, there are two more icon options available, similar to the variations of Flash themes in the company's A100-based phones. There is a carousel option with smooth horizontal scrolling of icons. The next display option looks more like a tribute to fashion, since there is more than little sense in displaying one large icon without animation on a large screen. The last version of the icons depends on the content of the existing theme.

If a set of icons is also stitched in the theme, you can use it. Themes themselves can be switched from the same drop-down list of functions in the main menu.

There is even more animation in the interface, although there was more than enough animation in the W910i. The smoothness of the appearance of the drop-down windows of functions has also been significantly improved, and the icons in the top line now smoothly fly out onto the strip, or disappear.

In addition to the extensive possibilities of themes, the user can set background images in Jpeg, Bmp, GIF and SWF format.

Profiles are still limited to 7 add-ons, each of which can be changed according to a number of parameters:

  • ringer volume

  • increasing volume activation

  • vibration alert

  • key sound

  • redirection

  • White list

  • method of answering an incoming call (with a separate key, or by pressing any, except for the end call).

You can change the name of 6 profiles, but the icons remain unchanged.

Phone book

The organization of work with the phone book is simple, but not devoid of many popular features. Synchronization of VCF-profiles is supported, or their transfer via Bluetooth, copying of the database from the SIM-card, or vice versa. The view list on the screen displays 6 entries at the same time, and the selected contact can be viewed with phone numbers. If several numbers are assigned to a record, you can switch between them due to simple horizontal deviations. Unfortunately, the usual selection of several records only allows you to add subscribers to the mailing list of the message, and deleting and moving is possible only when using the corresponding functions. In total, the phonebook memory is designed for 1000 entries and 7000 numbers in total.

Accordingly, in addition to 7 phone numbers, each subscriber can add:

  • Email

  • Web address

  • individual call signal and picture

  • position

  • organization

  • the street

  • town

  • region

  • postcode

  • and the country where the place of work is located.

  • the same address data for the place of residence

  • text note up to 511 characters

  • birthday memo.

Call lists do not differ in functionality, depending on the launch from the main menu, or by pressing the call button in the standby mode. There are four horizontal tabs with calls sorted by incoming, outgoing, missed and mixed. Each section can hold up to 30 entries, while for each subscriber there can be only one entry.

Posts

There is a good tool for creating SMS / EMS messages. As before, it is possible to display emoticons in the form of pictures. As before, the limit on the size of the created message is at 594 characters in Cyrillic and 1188 characters in Latin.

The MMS service has not undergone any changes either. This is an eye-catching interface for complex messaging, up to 300 kb in size. You can add both existing audio, photo, video materials, and directly launch tools for their creation (camera, voice recorder).

The email client allows you to set up an account in five steps.

First, fill in your account name and email address. Then enter your username and password, after which the phone will offer to get the rest of the settings from the server sonyericsson.com/support. If there is no Internet access, the other two steps will consist of choosing the type of connection (POP3, IMAP4) and entering the servers of incoming and outgoing mail.

Of the changes in the interface, we can only note the changed background of the window for reading / writing a message.

Regarding the Cyrillic alphabet in the headings, we can note the correct display of most messages received by the author. All attachments can be saved to the phone memory - this is a definite plus.

Organizer

The phone has five alarms, in each of which you can indicate the active days of the week, set the call time, melody, or radio frequency, if the activation of the FM receiver with sound output to the polyphonic speaker of the phone will be used as a signal.

The calendar

There are two types of display: month, or table of the week, with an hourly schedule for each day. Hovering over the desired day of the week, you can quickly create a reminder. Reminders also shine with a wide degree of customization. You can set an arbitrary name, start time, duration, notification in 5-30 minutes. before the start, set the specifics of the recurring reminder (daily, weekly, monthly, annually), as well as add information about the location of the event. For dessert, it is possible to add a small description of the event. As you can see, reminders, if not ideal, are as close as possible to those, given that this is not a separate organizer, but one of the functions of a mobile phone.

Notes

Plain text notes. Each can be up to 254 characters long.

Timer

Ordinary timer. Set the time to the nearest second and enjoy the report in standby mode.

Stopwatch allows you to create up to 9 intermediate values.

Calculator allows you to perform only the simplest arithmetic operations.

Code memo interesting only by the presence as such. Otherwise, the four-digit password most eloquently indicates the severity of these private notes.

Multimedia menu

The multimedia menu has undergone almost no changes in comparison with its predecessors based on the first variation of the A200. The settings section still includes only screen orientation settings. Due to the presence of a position sensor, there is also a function of automatic screen rotation.

Video

The section for viewing videos includes a simple sorting tool and the player itself, which does not support files with a resolution higher than 320 x 240 pixels. There is a freeze-frame function with saving in the Jpeg format, and fans of watching movies will like the automatic continuation of watching the clip of the last moment, at which the playback was interrupted the previous time.

Photo

Viewing photos is equipped with pleasant flipping effects, and at the same time the ability to quickly add favorites to the album. The images in the album are broken down by month, and the entire list of photos is displayed on the screen at once. During viewing, you can quickly call the image editor, or use the automatic correction of color levels Photo Fix.

The slide presentation of X-Pict Story images has not gone anywhere either, although its capabilities have not changed. Unlike smartphones and, you do not have a choice of soundtrack melodies, so you have to limit yourself to moods alone.

Games

Considering the upcoming A300 with ample opportunities for creating high-quality games, the games section has already been brought to the multimedia menu. From here, you can conveniently call running applications, or quickly terminate them and move on to others.

Streaming news feeds were brought to the title section of the multimedia menu, filling them with a full range of settings. The section contains links to downloaded or pre-installed links of network aggregators.

Music

The music player of the third edition is somewhat expanded in its capabilities, as compared to the ordinary phones of the company, which are not related to Walkman solutions.

In addition to sorting by artist, album, displaying all songs, and collecting playlists, sorting sections include a few other interesting options. There is a sorting of songs by year, by genre, displaying separately from the rest of all kinds of audio books, although the Sense Me function is undoubtedly the most interesting sorting. It first appeared in the W910i, while it can be viewed separately, since it is completely independent there. All moods can be set only using a PC, namely the Media Manager utility. It's funny, but the latest version of the program is still dated December 2007, so it shouldn't be surprising that the program doesn't recognize the phone.

Having added the files indexed in the program settings section to the phone's library, the user can only update the library and go to the Sense Me section. In this section, there is a simple crosshair of happy and sad moods, and the dynamics of the compositions is divided by a vertical scale. The files themselves are indicated as dots, the location of which roughly corresponds to the speed and mood, according to the Music Manager program. Another interesting feature is the formation of a set of tracks of interest in the current playlist. To do this, just select the appropriate sorting by pressing the right soft-key, and then set the diameter of the enclosing ring, the center of which is the currently selected track.

The playback window consists of a narrow progress line across the entire width of the window, above which there is a small Album Art window, icons for playback modes and the current position of the track in the playlist. The information bar at the top has not gone anywhere, where indicators of signal strength, battery charge, other notifications and time are displayed.

Under the line, the elapsed and remaining playing time of the track, information from the ID3 tag, and the designations of actions on the navigation key are displayed. Interestingly, the key itself has the same markings. Pressing up or down brings up the current playlist, overshadowing half of the active play window. When the orientation is changed to landscape, the navigation key designation floats to the right edge of the scroll bar.

In the player's settings, you can turn on / off the random play mode, and at the same time repeat the current song / list. In addition, instead of a small album cover, you can display various animations called visualizations on the screen. The effects are pleasing to the eye, but with such a size of the active area it will not hurt to use a magnifying glass as well.

Another interesting feature, previously noticed in the W760i, is the interesting function of controlling the phone due to the position sensor. In addition to switching tracks by abruptly shifting the phone to the side while holding down the player key, there is one more interesting "feature". It is enough to hold down the Walkman key on the right side and then tilt the phone away from you, or towards yourself, and it is desirable to do it smoothly. What happens? You will see the answer to this question in the video.

Equalizer in the phone is five-band, with one user preset and classic Mega Bass. Apparently, in spite of the W980i and W902i, they decided to artificially limit the equalizer in use without a headset connected.

The quality of music playback is completely identical to that of the overwhelming majority of other phones from the company based on the A200. The optimal result can be achieved when using a wireless headset, while the wired solution leaves almost no volume headroom, differing even in less dynamics than the Bluetooth headset DS970 and DS200.

Radio

The phone also has an FM receiver that supports automatic station search and RDS information output. Each of the active stations can be stored in one of 20 memory locations.

Communications

Bluetooth

The phone has a Bluetooth 2.0 wireless module with EDR support. Most of the profiles accompanying the standard are supported:

  • Basic Imaging Profile

  • Basic Printing Profile

  • Dial-Up Networking Profile

  • File Transfer Profile

  • Generic Access Profile

  • Generic Object Exchange Profile

  • Handsfree Profile

  • Headset Profile

  • JSR-82 Java API

  • Object Push Profile

  • Personal Area Network Profile

  • Serial Port Profile

  • Service Discovery Application Profile

  • Synchronization Profile

  • SyncML OBEX binding

  • Phonebook Access Proflle.

The data transfer rate is at the level of 100-120 kb / s. The stability of the connection is high, both when transferring large files and when working with a wireless headset.

Connecting via cable to a PC is trivial. Nothing new, and safe shutdown via a utility in Windows remains a disadvantage of Fast Port. The average data transfer rate is in the order of 1.5-2 MB per second using a Sony 512 MB memory card.

Games

Guitar Rock Tour

A game from the category of unpretentious training for reaction, whose visualization means are reduced to performing uncomplicated actions. In the case of this game, we have a certain scene with the main character from “True Metal” - the guitar player, whose goal is to lose a solo, while our help is to control the game through a certain bar scale.

Extreme Air Snowboarding

Another toy of the old order, this time only 4 years ago. One of the most successful snowboard substitutes on a tiny phone screen, supporting up to 5 variations of tricks in the air. Accordingly, trick points are the goal of the races.

Racing fewer gt

Three-dimensional racing in the phone is a good thing, but this does not mean that Need For Speed Pro Street necessarily plays the role of racing, since the gaming industry of mobile entertainment is ready to provide a wide variety of games. This is how uncomplicated races with a simple plot and a minimum of what forms the plot of the game got.

Quadra pop

Despite the company's predicted refusal to use this analogue of Tetris, in the W595 we also see a pre-installed version of Quadra pop in the Walkman - the style of the background and objects.

Applications

Considering the limited functionality of the WEB - browser in the A200 platform, the appearance in the application section of a midlet for working with YouTube looks quite justified, especially given the popularity of the service among Internet users. Naturally, the client does not present a complete version of the website's WEB-interface, so the navigation options are limited to logging into your account, viewing the list of the most popular videos and the video search bar by title. Naturally, the videos found can be easily viewed on the phone screen, both in portrait and full-screen versions.

Comics strips

Music mate 5

In the fifth version of the instrumental set of musical samples, the long-awaited possibility of tonal tuning of the guitar appeared, although all other points coincide with the previous version.

Rock bubblehead

To get positive emotions from the acceleration sensor, there is one simple utility that allows you to maneuver a funny person by shaking and deflecting the phone.

Unit Converter is interesting not so much for a sufficient base of various values, but for a pleasant visualization of graphics.

World mate 3d

Ordinary viewing of time zones on a three-dimensional globe.

Music quiz

A music quiz for those who are sure that their phone contains the music whose name can be guessed in a matter of fractions of a second. When the utility is launched, the entire phone memory is automatically scanned, of course, including the memory card. In the background, the program creates its own collections of compositions with completely filled tags, although those who are especially impatient may not wait for the scanning process to end, but immediately proceed to the quiz, where a section of the composition is played, five answer options are displayed on the screen, and the number of points decreases in proportion to the response time. that can be obtained for this question. In total, in each quiz, you need to guess a dozen compositions, after which your total score of accumulated points will take place in the statistics. The faster the answers, the more points, so go for it.

Walk mate

The long-awaited pedometer that uses an acceleration sensor to control the turntable and nothing else. Unfortunately, this is not so much a pedometer as a nice standby screen saver, as it only counts the steps, without even trying to convert them to the distance traveled. But there is a symbolic goal of each day, whose essence lies in a set of symbolic 10,000 steps, which approximately corresponds to 6-8 kilometers, depending on your height and other parameters. It's funny, but the Nokia application is limited to half the numbers as a daily norm, although this is not so important, in contrast to the fact that there is a pedometer, and it works correctly, even if only if you carry the phone in your jeans / trousers pocket, or on wrist.

In this section, the owners talk about their personal experience of using SonyEricsson W595i, the pros and cons of the phone. If you have a story to tell, go for it! We regularly reward best reviewers.

Despite the fact that at the moment in the market of cell phones, touchscreen models are violently replacing the good old push-button ones, with my stylish model in the Flower design, as if created for a beautiful modern girl, I cannot get enough of it for three years in a row. Very easy to use, with a clear "menu" without any unnecessary "quirks" and frequent glitches of the system. The buttons are small, but for gentle female hands - what you need, besides, you get used to them very quickly and over time you realize that it simply cannot be more convenient. The display, of course, is not large, but the picture is very clear and bright. Even on the Internet, you can see the pictures very clearly, the main thing is, do not forget to update your browser. The camera for a model in this category is simply gorgeous: in good lighting, the pictures are of decent quality. Good loud sound.

The battery with very active use lasts for three days - and this is after so many years of use. Particularly pleasing is the body of the phone - there are almost never any stains, scratches or marks on it, and if, nevertheless, sometimes something is visible, the stains are very easy to remove. To this day, the case looks like new, despite the fact that it is made in a white color scheme.

My first phone, with which I was very lucky. Of course, I was very glad that the phone has four loudspeakers, three of which are used for playing music and for speakerphone. At that time it was one of the few 3G phones, which is still a big plus. The camera is pretty good, but there is no flash. This phone also has a front camera, but I still did not understand how to turn it on (it seems like it should automatically turn on when I make a video call, but I never made a single video call). Bright display with a resolution of 240 * 320. I was especially pleased with the pedometer application, which does not require a network connection and shows how far you have walked in a day. Served for four years and I dropped it into a puddle, after that it worked as before, but a year later I flooded it again, and then the display broke and I decided it was time to buy a new one. The phone has enough memory and if it catches 3G, then the Internet speed is high (it even reached 250 kb / s). During all this time, it was only after 3 years that the 0 key began to jam, and there were no glitches.

Not a bad phone for those who love push-button phones or push-button sliders. Although not a smartphone, it contains everything that would be considered a modern phone.

Thanks to innovative technologies, the Sony Ericsson W595 mobile phone will allow you to enjoy not only crystal clear music, but also amazing quality photos and videos. For this, the phone has a bright and large 2.2-inch screen. Built-in SensMe lets you create playlists to suit your mood, and Shake control lets you switch tracks or turn up the volume with a single shake of your phone. The W595 Walkman phone has new features that will allow you and your friends to have a great time: built-in stereo speakers, the ability to connect an additional headset, the preinstalled Guitar Legend game (a music simulator that will appeal to fans of rock and roll). Wherever and whenever you go, your favorite music will be with you.
