Appearance

Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 has a completely familiar design with the only difference that the company's logo is placed under the display, and not above it.

On the front, there are sensors, a camera, an 8-inch screen, two stereo speakers and a company logo.

On the back there is a 5MP camera and Lenovo logo. The lid has a soft-touch coating, which ensures a secure grip of the tablet in the hand and reduces the occurrence of fingerprints.

The top edge is equipped with a microUSB port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Video review Lenovo Tab2 A8-50

Lenovo Tab2 A8-50 is a good tablet with a quality screen and loud surround sound. The device is suitable for all lovers of surfing the Internet, watching videos and playing most modern games at medium settings.

  • Pros: The Lenovo Tab 2 A8 we reviewed is an affordable device for surfing the Internet, checking email and streaming video. The preinstalled Dolby app significantly enhances the sound quality. There is a microSD card slot.
  • Minuses: The performance of the Lenovo Tab 2 A8 is typical for the size and price of a tablet by today's standards. Large apps and games take some time to load and may not play well as expected.
  • Outcome: The performance of the Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 may be typical for the size and price of a tablet, but if you're on a budget, it's a good everyday machine.

If you can spend a little more on a new tablet, I highly recommend that you do so. If you can't, then the Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 is a decent tablet PC capable of satisfying simple needs.

The budget 8-inch tablets are decidedly outdated, thanks to the chunky design and specs that only made an impression in 2013. However, not everyone wants the latest and greatest, which makes the Lenovo Tab 2 A8 an acceptable choice for those who are indifferent to aesthetics and tolerant of dating technology.

At bargain prices, Lenovo offers a comparatively simple tablet - typical of tablets in this price range - and all its shortcomings are the result of sacrifices to satisfy the low cost. The tablet can be bought for 10,500 rubles in Russia. Review Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 further.

DesignLenovoTab 2A8

  • Nvidia Shield Tablet - 28104;
  • Dell Venue 7 - 6686;
  • Lenovo Tab 2 A8 - 6058;
  • LG G Pad 7.0 - 4685;

Note: The highest score is the best.

If you try to play something heavier than Angry Birds, the performance will noticeably sag. Large games take some time to download, install, and play. Gameplay suffers from artifacts and lag even when there are no open apps in the background. While playing NOVA 3, we encountered short second delays, after which the game continued. In 3DMark benchmarks, the tablet performed better than the LG G Pad 7.0, the other budget tablet, but that's not a very good score. The good news is that with active Dolby tuning, sound effects are vibrant, crisp and immersive.

Speaker-wise: tablets aren't used to bragging about sound quality, but Dolby takes mobile speakers one step further. The Tab 2 A8 is equipped with Dolby's latest Atmos technology, which delivers dynamic sound throughout the space. The Lenovo tablet comes with Dolby preinstalled, and when the correct settings are applied, it dramatically improves sound, not only through the speakers, but also through the headphones. The front speakers are loud enough for watching movies, but they lack bass, which makes the speakers less appealing for music.

Overview Lenovo Tab 2 A8: The speakers are not overly powerful, but they sound good when supported by the appDolby.

Another weakness of tablets that continues to be used over and over again is the camera. The Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 features a 2MP front camera and a 5MP main camera. Both cameras capture blurry photos with blurry focus and dull colors. Photo quality is overwhelmingly grainy, especially in low light conditions.

Lenovo claims the Tab 2 A8 has a battery life of around 8 hours. We used a looped local video that the tablet lasted 7.5 hours to play.

Overview Lenovo Tab 2 A8: A very generalized average tablet.

Conclusion

There is nothing spectacular about the Lenovo Tab 2 A8 other than its low price point. Dolby Atmos is quite impressive if you enjoy watching movies, but the poor display quality will keep us from recommending it to true movie buffs. If you're on a budget, other tablets in this price range will offer the same mediocre performance and design.

Tab 2 a8-50 is one of the most successful and budget models from the well-known manufacturer Lenovo, which, in addition to tablets, produces good laptops, smartphones and other electronics. So, we have on board a 4-core MediaTekMT8735 processor with a clock frequency of 1300 MHz, which is typically not the fastest computing device on the market, however, for a declared cost of $ 200, it copes with its duties with a bang, the system works smartly and stably. The only "but" you need to allocate 1 GB of RAM, this will be described below. Also, the matrix of the screen is quite good and has an excellent color gamut and a margin of brightness, the viewing angles are also within the normal range. In general, a good budget tablet from a well-known brand will suit a wide range of users. Of the minuses, it is worth highlighting the not the best quality of the camera, however, are they needed here?

Delivery and packaging

The Lenovo TAB A8-50 tablet comes in a relatively large white box made of thick and high-quality cardboard. In accordance with the strict corporate style, it is absolutely devoid of any colorful, inviting printing, and has only the most necessary technical and legal information.

So, the front part of the box is almost completely occupied by a huge image of a tablet, and a small information sticker is attached to the back side, which contains a list of the main technical characteristics of the device, several barcodes and information about the manufacturer.

The Lenovo TAB A8-50 package is also modest and contains the minimum set of accessories required for a comfortable start. In addition to the tablet, the box contains a charger, USB cable, user documentation and a warranty card.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

As the name implies, the Lenovo TAB A8-50 tablet is made in a rather convenient and very popular 8-inch form factor. The device has a classic rectangular design with slightly rounded edges. He looks quite respectable and slightly conservative. The difficult choice between style and practicality was made in favor of the latter, which fully fits into the concept of a budget device.

The base of the case is made of high-quality matte plastic with a soft-touch coating that is pleasant to the touch. It gives the tablet a sense of reliability and solidity, but it has one significant drawback - it collects fingerprints and marks from wet hands well. Fortunately, this nuisance is easily leveled with the help of available tools and a simple microfiber cloth.

With its compact dimensions (217 x 136 x 8.95 mm) and low weight (360 g), the novelty is perfect for the role of a mobile companion, as it can easily fit into almost any pocket of outerwear or a compartment of a small bag. Also, thanks to its modest size and pleasant-to-touch coating, the tablet fits well in the hands, which allows you to use it for quite a long time without much fatigue and discomfort.

In total, there are two models on the market: Lenovo TAB A8-50 A5500H and Lenovo TAB A8-50 A5500F. Except for the color scheme, they are outwardly almost identical and differ only in slightly different functionality. There are four color options for the buyer's choice: white, red, yellow and dark blue. Refusal from black, in our opinion, is a completely deliberate and logical choice, since the tablet is most of all focused on the youth audience, who mainly prefers bright and eye-catching colors. Thanks to this variety, even the most demanding user will be able to choose a device to their own taste.

The front side of the tablet is completely covered with simple mineral glass without protective properties and oleophobic layer. A small black edging made of glossy plastic goes along its contour. In addition to decorative purposes, it serves as additional protection against damage. The bezels around the screen are medium in size: 20mm on the top, 24mm on the bottom, and 14mm on the sides. They allow you to quite comfortably interact with the device, holding it in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Above the display is the front camera lens and a large manufacturer's logo, while the bottom is an oblong multimedia speaker grill. There are no usual proximity and light sensors, as well as touch buttons "Back", "Home" and "Menu", in this model. The latter have been replaced by software versions that are located directly on the tablet screen.

Lenovo TAB A8-50 has a fairly standard arrangement of elements. So, on the right side of the device there is a power button and a volume rocker, while on the left there is a tray for a microSD card (and in a model with 3G support - also for a Micro-SIM card), which is covered with a dense plastic flap.

On the top edge of the device there is a 3.5 mm audio jack for a headset and a standard micro-USB port with USB OTG support. The bottom edge of the gadget contains only a small, almost invisible microphone hole.

The back of the tablet is made of high-quality dark blue plastic with a "spark", which has a pleasant matte texture. It smoothly flows into the side faces of the device, thereby completing its construction and appearance.

The main camera lens is located in the upper left corner, framed by a small metal ring. Slightly lower in the center is another large manufacturer's logo. The Dolby Digital logo is located at the very bottom, indicating the use of the corresponding sound technology. Below it are several small stickers with barcodes and other useful information.

Despite the budget focus, Lenovo TAB A8-50 has a fairly good build quality. The body parts and structural elements fit quite tightly: there are no visible backlashes or gaps. The good level of rigidity is also pleasantly pleasing. Except for a barely noticeable creak at moderate pressure and a slight punching of the glass in the center, there are no other special complaints about the tablet. Even with more active attempts to twist, the geometry of the apparatus cannot be changed.

Display

The tested model is equipped with an 8-inch IPS-screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. At the same time, the pixel density is 188 ppi, which can be considered an acceptable value for such a diagonal size. Although the level of detail cannot be called a record, it is quite enough for comfortable use in undemanding everyday mode.

The display of the device is distinguished by high contrast and wide viewing angles, which is traditional for matrices of this type. With horizontal and vertical deflection, the picture on the screen practically does not change and remains well readable. Only with a diagonal view does a noticeable color shift towards yellow and violet tones appear. The overall color rendition of the screen is characterized by bright and saturated colors, as well as a fairly uniform white balance, without noticeable drift into warm or cold shades.

Since the device does not have a light sensor, the screen backlight only has a manual adjustment range. Like other display specs, it is also at a fairly good level and allows you to comfortably use the tablet both in bright daylight and in low light conditions. Only direct sunlight should be avoided.

The Lenovo TAB A8-50 display is covered with ordinary mineral glass without protective properties, which will require more careful and careful handling from the user. Unfortunately, it also lacks any oleophobic coating, so it collects fingerprints and other dirt pretty quickly. Also, there is a small air gap in the display unit, which in most cases slightly increases the reliability of the design, since in case of a fall or other negative impact, the glass, and not the screen matrix, will take on the entire severity of the impact.

The built-in touch pad recognizes up to 10 simultaneous clicks and is highly sensitive. During the entire testing period, no delays or erroneous responses were observed. The sliding of your fingers on the protective glass is quite comfortable and pleasant. But there is no support for working with gloves.

Sound

As mentioned above, the Lenovo TAB A8-50 lineup is represented by two devices. We got our hands on the version with the "F" index, which is equipped with only one multimedia speaker located on the front panel. With its frontal landscape layout and support for Dolby Digital Plus technology, it delivers loud and fairly high-quality sound.

By default, the frequency range of the speaker is rather limited and cannot boast of special depth and volume. However, as soon as the above function is activated, the sound in the device is instantly transformed. Well-developed mids appear, highs are better detailed, and very pleasant bass becomes noticeable. In this regard, the tablet can be used with pleasure for games, watching movies and listening to music without additional equipment.

However, this does not mean that external audio devices cannot be connected to the gadget. Since the device is equipped with a 3.5 mm audio jack, it works great when paired with a variety of wired headsets and headphones. So, in our tests, at first, the sound did not stand out in anything special. As with the built-in multimedia speaker, the activation of Dolby Digital Plus has had a rather dramatic positive effect, adding tangible clarity, richness and depth to the available sound range.

Camera

The digital arsenal of the Lenovo TAB A8-50 tablet is represented by two cameras, the technical characteristics of which are quite enough for performing simple everyday shooting, as well as for making video calls via the Internet.

So, the main camera is represented by a 5-megapixel module with an f / 2.8 aperture and a fixed focus. It is capable of recording video with a maximum resolution of up to 1080p at 30 fps. The materials captured with its help are distinguished by good contrast and pleasant color reproduction, which is quite expected from a camera of this class. The clarity and detail of the image are also at a decent level and do not cause serious complaints. A little upsetting is the lack of autofocus, which is why text with a small font size can no longer be photographed.

The front camera of the tablet is played by a 2-megapixel module with an f / 2.8 aperture and fixed focus, which is capable of shooting video with a resolution of up to 480p at 30 fps. Its main task will be to assist in conducting all kinds of web conferencing and video calls.

The camera software has a simple and intuitive interface. The menu contains a completely standard set of functions and preset operating modes that can be found in almost any multimedia device of this category. It allows you to quickly and easily move to the shooting process and, in general, is well suited for a beginner or undemanding user.

User interface

The Lenovo TAB A8-50 tablet is equipped with the well-known Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS, on top of which the proprietary Lenovo Launcher HD version 1.4 is installed. This bundle has proven itself well on the example of work in the previous models of the manufacturer, so its appearance in this device is a completely logical decision.

Compared to the base version of Android OS, the software shell has undergone a number of minor visual and functional changes, but it still has a pleasant interface and a wide range of features. The developers did not begin to make drastic modifications, but added only the most necessary, in their opinion, touches and adjustments.

So, among the notable differences, it is worth highlighting a special menu item that allows you to customize the display of the desktop. In this section, the user can enable / disable animation, activate the recognition of programmed gestures, and assign actions for the double tap function. With it, you can call up a list of recently used programs, open the notification panel, or simply lock the tablet screen.

Another useful addition is a dedicated side smart panel. It serves for quick access to the gallery of photos and the library of books, displays shortcuts of the last used applications, and also allows you to configure the basic modes of the tablet. The panel is called up by light swiping from the edges of the screen and can be located on one or the other side of the display. If desired, you can simply turn it off.

The operating system settings menu has a wide range of items and allows you to fine-tune the operation of the device. Here you can get information about the state of the gadget's internal memory, find out the list of running applications and the resources they consume, set the display brightness and volume level, and also configure the operation of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS modules.

The speed of the proprietary shell, like the entire operating system, is pleasantly pleasing and does not cause any special complaints. Animations are fluid and timely, and flipping through desktops is fast and without noticeable jerks or stutters. When launching particularly heavy applications, sometimes slight delays occur, but this practically does not affect the usability of the device.

Hardware platform and performance

Like most of the affordable tablets on the market, the Lenovo TAB A8-50 is built around a relatively inexpensive hardware platform. It is based on a 4-core MediaTek MT8121 microprocessor with an operating frequency of 1.3 GHz and a 1 MB L2 cache. It is manufactured based on the ARM Cortex-A7 microarchitecture using a 28nm manufacturing process. The integrated graphics adapter IT PowerVR SGX544 with an operating frequency of 156 MHz acts as a video accelerator. The tablet is equipped with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, of which about 12.7 GB is available to the user. The device also has support for microSD memory cards up to 32 GB.

Despite the budget of the hardware platform, the device demonstrates good performance, which is quite enough for almost all everyday tasks (mobile surfing, checking mail, working with documents, etc.). In addition, the device copes well with playing a variety of HD-content, as it has support for an impressive number of video and audio formats right out of the box.

A relatively weak point in the "processor-video accelerator" pair is the integrated graphics core. Its power is clearly not enough for smooth processing of a large flow of 3D graphics, which is clearly seen in the example of such game hits as Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8: Airborne. In particular, at high and medium settings, there was a significant drop in the frame rate and constant picture slowdown. However, as soon as the settings were lowered to a lower level, these games began to run smoothly, while demonstrating a comfortable FPS value. From this we can conclude that the Lenovo TAB A8-50 tablet can still be used as a pretty good portable gaming device, but only for playing simple casual games or top projects, but already at the minimum graphics settings.

The downside of the relatively low system performance is its good energy efficiency. Over the entire period of our tests, we did not manage to record a single case of significant heating of the case. Even with a very active and prolonged load, the device always remained cool and pleasant to the touch.

Communication and communications

Unlike its more expensive counterpart, the Lenovo TAB A8-50 A5500F model lacks not only a second multimedia speaker, but also support for 3G mobile communications, since it lacks a built-in radio module, which means the ability to transfer data and make phone calls.

Despite these differences, both versions of the tablet have good communication capabilities, which are represented by quite good wireless modules Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n. Also, the gadget is able to broadcast multimedia content using DLNA technology.

Wi-Fi data transfer speed (wired connection 100 Mbps, router supporting 802.11 n) shows excellent results: up to 52 Mbps for receiving and up to 57 Mbps for sending. Searching for points and connecting to them occurs instantly, and the established connection has good stability.

In addition, Lenovo TAB A8-50 is equipped with a fairly accurate GPS positioning module with A-GPS support. The quality of his work is at a good level and practically does not cause serious complaints. Only the long cold start time is a little upsetting - in this model it takes about 6 minutes. During testing, the tablet found about 12 satellites on average and successfully connected to 7 of them. At the same time, the positioning accuracy was within 4 meters.

Autonomous work

The reviewed model is equipped with a fairly good non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh. Due to the moderate power of the hardware platform, as well as the presence of a relatively small screen, the gadget can boast a good battery life, which translates into almost two days of uninterrupted operation under moderate load while performing everyday tasks. The result, in truth, is very, very decent, especially when compared with similar indicators of autonomy of some competitors on the market.

Let's move on to more detailed test results. While watching HD video at 50% display brightness and enabled Wi-Fi and GPS modules, the tablet was able to work for about 10 hours. And in the case of a gaming simulation using Asphalt 8: Airborne - just over 4 hours at 100% display brightness.

The estimated battery life according to the PCMark benchmark (editing documents, watching video content, listening to music, etc.) was 7.5 hours with a display brightness of 50%, while data from the GFXBench benchmark showed exactly 300 minutes of device operation in offline mode. It should also be noted that in both cases, the Wi-Fi and GPS modules were included.

To fully charge the battery, you need to spend a little more than 3 hours of free time using the supplied charger.

Outcomes

It's good to see that the segment of practical and relatively affordable tablets has been expanded with another rather interesting device. Thanks to many years of development experience, Lenovo engineers managed to create a multifunctional and fairly high-quality device that has all the capabilities to become a popular product on the market.

In particular, the tablet is equipped with a good 8-inch IPS-screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 188 ppi, while most of its direct competitors are content with TN-matrices. Despite its relatively thin body, it is equipped with a good multimedia speaker, which, with the support of the advanced Dolby Digital Plus technology, provides a loud and pleasant sound.

Thanks to the energy efficient hardware platform provided by the 4-core MediaTek MT8121 microprocessor, the tablet perfectly copes with almost all daily tasks, while providing a good level of autonomy. A non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh helps him in this, which is quite enough for uninterrupted operation for two days in moderate mode.

In addition, do not forget that the monitored gadget has a rather compact size and a standard set of communication capabilities represented by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS modules, which allows it not only to exchange large amounts of data, but also turns it into a portable communication center. For complete happiness, only the 3G module is missing, which is implemented in another version of the device.

Of course, Lenovo TAB A8-50 is not devoid of certain drawbacks, so it cannot claim the laurels of an ideal multimedia device. We, like other users, would like to see a more powerful graphics subsystem and better camera modules, but all this would significantly affect the final cost of the tablet, making it less affordable for most buyers.

Therefore, after carefully weighing all the pros and cons, we still recommend that you pay attention to this tablet not only for beginners who want to purchase the first multimedia device under the control of Android OS, but also for more experienced users looking for a practical and multifunctional device.

Advantages:

  • practical design;
  • good build quality;
  • high-quality 8-inch IPS-display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 188 ppi;
  • high responsiveness of the touch pad;
  • the presence of a multimedia speaker with support for Dolby Digital Plus technology;
  • the presence of an energy efficient 4-core processor with a good level of performance;
  • support for microSD memory cards up to 32 GB;
  • wide communication capabilities provided by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS modules;
  • good level of autonomy.

Peculiarities:

  • the lineup includes a tablet version with support for 2G and 3G mobile networks and two stereo speakers.

Flaws:

  • fairly easily soiled case;
  • lack of autofocus for the main camera;
  • poor performance of the graphics subsystem;
  • the display is covered with glass without protective properties and an oleophobic layer.

We express our gratitude to the Ukrainian representative office of the company Lenovo for the tablet provided for testing.

In the spring of 2014, a number of new products from Lenovo were presented on the mobile device market, among which was the 8-inch Lenovo A8-50 model, equipped with two stereo speakers with Dolby ® Digital Plus function.

Specifications

The basis of the device's performance is a 4-core processor from MediaTek MT8382 (or MTK 8121, see below for details) with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. These parameters are enough to run modern games and watch FullHD videos without any problems. By default, there is an internal memory with a capacity of 8 (16) GB for installing applications and storing personal data, but if desired, this volume can be increased by supporting microSD memory cards up to 32 GB.

According to markings, Lenovo A8 is divided into three versions:

Lenovo A8-50 A5500-F- the version with support for Wi-Fi only wireless technology, unlike the next two, is based on the Mediatek MT8121 chip.
Lenovo A8-50 A5500-H- this version of the device supports Wi-Fi and 3G technologies (only data transmission is available in 3G mode).
Lenovo A8-50 A5500-HV- a full version with Wi-Fi and 3G (there is a possibility of making phone calls).

The 3G versions of the tablet have a Micro-SIM slot and support GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and HSDPA frequencies. There is a Bluetooth 4.0 module for communication with additional devices. The device runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The overall dimensions of the Lenovo A8-50 are 217 x 136 x 8.9 mm and the weight is 360 grams.

The power source is a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh, which allows up to 8 hours of surfing the Internet with Wi-Fi turned on. In Antutu Benchmark tests, the device is gaining 16353 points.

Display

Lenovo A8 has an 8-inch display with a bright high-quality IPS matrix. In contrast to the 7-inch version of the device, this solution allows you to increase the size of the working surface by 30% practically without sacrificing compactness. The screen resolution is 1280 × 800 with a pixel density of 189 ppi.

Camera

The gadget is equipped with two cameras. The front one allows you to shoot with a resolution of 2 MP, and the main one - 5 MP. Unfortunately, there is no flash on the main camera.

Appearance

The tablet looks neat and high quality. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that this model is available in four colors. The machines are available in white, blue, red and yellow.

Thus, this model can fit well enough to a woman's wardrobe and highlight the owner with a bright and unusual look.

Lenovo A8 is a balanced device with a good screen, the ability to stand out by choosing one of the 4 device colors, as well as good, high-quality speakers. By and large, it is suitable for all connoisseurs of a device of this size.
