Myths and Reality. myths and reality What troubles happened with the phone

Alexander1:

Phone SUPER! He learned it so much that already taking out of his pants pocket
already typed any necessary menu item with the keys, even calmly
dialed the call number without errors.
Now, in 2017, I want to buy it again in the form of a time machine, because
an indecent amount of pleasant moments associated with him 2005-summer)

Highscreen tasty :

Svetlana:

Stylish, handy smartphone with a good camera and a nice metal body. The battery is not very capacious, but I do not load the phone especially, it lasts for a day and a half. Very bright screen, you can even read it calmly. Lte, 2 sim cards, a confident signal even in a village near Tula, where he usually catches in only one place, and on the stairs and with an outstretched hand. The camera is ordinary, the pictures on the screen seem brighter and richer than when you drop them on a computer. If someone prints pictures from a smart, they will need to be slightly processed in Photoshop for brightness. I took it for a promotion in an official store, for the price at which I got it, smart smart.

Highscreen power ice :

Ekaterina:

A very successful model for such a cost, both externally and in terms of filling. Firstly, it has a beautiful design, it is comfortable to hold in the hand, and has a fairly durable body. Secondly, it works well: I easily use all applications, quickly find 3G, LTE, wi-fi. I like the camera too. I thought that 8 megapixels would not be enough for clear pictures. For a surprisingly long time, the phone goes without charging, considering how much time I spend on social networks, listening to music and constantly using applications. I just charge it no more than once every 2 days. Plus a good amount of memory. I often download something and while I am saving up pictures on the device. In general, a very convenient and inexpensive phone. I am pleased to recommend using

Highscreen Power Five EVO :

Igor:

The biggest plus of this device is the battery. It may not even be so much the battery as the balance, so to speak. I charge it every 3-4 days, while this did not particularly affect the design, it is quite decent, not a brick or a shovel. Not the most powerful percentage, but nevertheless it does not freeze, there are no problems with the installation of toy applications and all other little things necessary for work and entertainment, everything pulls with a bang. Surprisingly decent main camera, the front camera is not ice. The loudspeaker does not wheeze, the interlocutor is heard well, the sound in the headphones is quite normal. Great option for the price.

Dmitriy:

A good smartphone for a good price, the battery lasts a long time, the camera shoots with high quality, the processor with the operative pulls most games.

Highscreen Boost 3 Pro :

Matvey:

Sound is a bomb! I took it because of the sound and battery, the rest is not critical to me, the main thing is that it calls, does not bug and was not clogged with all kinds of junk in view of unnecessary applications. I go with a small battery for 2 days, a big one can be safely taken on a weekend trip where there are no outlets. Well assembled, does not creak anywhere, the lid does not lag behind, the charging socket is also strong (in principle, no wonder, I charge it infrequently). The camera is average, it will do for amateur photos, the text can also be viewed, for everything else I have a DSLR. The Internet does not slow down, the application pulls calmly, but I have not tried it on heavy games. The manufacturers are great for not putting the headphones in the kit, with cheap plugs for 150 re there will be no sound, you need good headphones like senheiser or fisher, otherwise you will not feel the mega-sound or appreciate the chip.

Thanks to Philips Xenium [email protected] you will always be in the know. Incredibly long battery life and built-in tuner ensure long-term connection, with news updates and favorite music stations to keep you in the mood.

Philips Xenium [email protected]++ - Myths and Reality

26.04.2005

Small introduction.
After reading all the reviews and reviews on the site, as well as almost all the forums related to Xenium on Philipok.ru, I realized that mistakes (intentional or accidental) are very common in the reviews, and many Xenium owners do not know everything about their phone and often scold him for the lack of a particular function simply out of ignorance. (For example, quite recently I myself discovered one useful function that for some reason I considered unrealized - it will be discussed below). In this regard, I decided to write my review in order to reflect in it everything I know about Xenium. Although I think that at the moment my review will be useful only to the owners of Xenium, tk. There are probably very few potential buyers left (now it will be very difficult to find this phone on sale, and a new, more attractive model has also come out, and another one will be released in the summer), but still someone else may need my review.

I warn you: I will repeat myself in many respects, since you could find most of my knowledge yourself, having rummaged in the instructions and in the Net. For example: - a wonderful review, to which for some reason there is no link from Helpix, but it also contains a few inaccuracies.

how long have you had this phone?

Since 30.08.2004

Do you use it until now? If not, why did you break up with him?

Yes, I do and intend to use it in the future until I get to 650 (financially).

How did you get this phone? By what criteria was he selected?

He got to me by buying in a store. Since this is my first phone, I chose it for a long time and thoroughly according to the following criteria:
1. Price: no more than 130 $.
2. Design: not colorful, classic form factor, non-flimsy body (not Siemens), normal size and with comfortable large keys (not Panasonic).
3. Reliability: bug-free and good reception.
4. Long operating time without recharging - I do not like to often charge the battery.
5. Definitely without a camera - a thing is useless in a phone (in a phone with a camera for such a price, functionality or reliability will obviously be sacrificed - you have to save on something), color. screen and polyphony are optional.

Looking through the relevant logs, I realized that at the first signs [email protected]++ suits me perfectly, it remains only to make sure that everything said about him in the magazines is true. Here we already needed Net. Helpix came in handy - really a very good site (thanks to its creators and reviewers), because the opinions of real users (especially those who are dissatisfied) are usually more important than the opinions of people who have tested the phone for a maximum of a week, although the latter, as a rule, have O the greatest experience and there is something to compare.
In general, I weighed all the pros and cons (see below), and in the end I have it.

What do you like? Strengths of the phone, dignity.
What's not to like? Weaknesses, disadvantages.

I could not separate these two questions, since not all advantages and disadvantages are in fact, and sometimes even are a consequence of each other (i.e. lack of dignity is a disadvantage, and vice versa). In short: about myths and reality ☹. Much of what is described below is subjective, but true.)

1. Design.
It looks great, even better than in the photographs, but there is no metal case declared by the manufacturer, but there is a metallized coating on the front panel and back cover, which, however, also looks very good and does not wear off, unlike the coating on the upper part of the case ( the latter slowly began to climb). The buttons, including the functional and the side buttons, are also not metal (though I realized this only after I dropped the phone on the side button and slightly ripped off the cover).

The whole body is quite sturdy and does not "squish". Although I had one small problem: the bottom corner of the back cover moved slightly, which was especially noticeable when pressed - it even crackled slightly, but the problem was solved very simply: there are two small holders on the bottom of the lid, I just glued a piece of tape under the holder, which moved away - as a result, the lid becomes denser and nothing comes off. There are several grooves on the case, into which garbage is periodically clogged, as well as a hole for the lace, for some reason made through - the garbage gets inside through it, and you cannot get it out of there without disassembling the case. The lace hole itself looks pretty sturdy. However, I don’t use it (I don’t think it is convenient). The buttons are very convenient (especially the joystick), and although there is indeed a rather large backlash (they say, not everyone has it), it does not interfere at all.

However, there are still some complaints.
The phone off button is combined with the end of the call button, which often leads to unwanted switching off of the phone. The "OK" button protrudes further than the others, which can lead to its accidental pressing when the phone is in your pocket, which in turn leads to undesirable consequences (for example, access to WAP) - naturally, if the buttons are not blocked in time.

Blocking is a separate topic. one of the most important (in my opinion) disadvantages of the phone is connected with it: the minimum time for automatic activation of the lock is one minute (taking into account the above, I would like it faster). In addition, if you accidentally press any key while taking the phone out of your pocket (and in order to look at the watch in the dark, you need to do this to turn on the backlight), then the phone will give an unlock prompt, which glows for 2-3 sec. - you have to wait until it disappears. The thing is that while it is on, the phone cannot be unlocked, which is very annoying, especially considering the uselessness of this very prompt (the owner of the phone knows, and outsiders don’t get involved). In short, the shortcomings of locking the keys in Xenium suggest that a clamshell is still better, tk. there is no need for blocking.

By the way, you can unlock the phone by pushing the joystick up and down, about which for some reason nothing is said in the instructions.

2. Screen and backlight.
The screen is black and white, in the sense of no grayscale, and in this regard, the "Album of pictures" function and everything connected with it are practically useless, except perhaps for small BMPs - they can be used with the "Photo call ", but more on that later. The image on the screen is clear and absolutely does not fade in the sun. The backlight is really nice white, and even the lowest level is enough. But there are also disadvantages: it flickers, and the lower the level of its brightness, the more it flickers. And yet - since the backlighting on the keys is also white and the keys themselves are light, the inscriptions on them are not always visible in the bright sun, but in the dark it all looks just super.

3. Call and vibration.
The ringtone is not polyphonic, but rather loud, especially for some melodies, for example "Samba" - if you set it as an alarm clock, it is very difficult not to hear it (although this has happened). There are 31 melodies, but actually about 20, and the rest are generally some incomprehensible sounds. I am pleased with the opportunity to put the sound on amplification - the volume increases gradually, but, unfortunately, not after a certain period of time, but only at the end of the melody. In this regard, it turns out that a short melody very quickly becomes loud, and a long one will not amplify at all, because hardly anyone will wait so long. But, as a rule, it is the long melodies that sound good. It is possible to upload your own melody (or several): in the reviews and reviews, for some reason, everyone claims that only one is uploaded, but the manual says about a list of your own melodies, and the phone itself writes "The list is empty" (I haven't checked it myself - I have enough family).

The vibra, in my opinion, is quite powerful, but I almost immediately bought a rather tight belt bag for it, because when carrying the phone in a pocket of my trousers, I often missed calls due to the fact that I did not feel the vibration.

By the way, a couple of cool moments are associated with the vibra in this phone: when it vibrates on the table, it sounds very loud, and at the same time it almost always crawls straight ahead - a kind of small tractor, and the translators have also tried - it's called vibration in the menu " Vibrator "☺.

4. The term of work from one recharge of the battery.
Almost all reviews say that Xenium works on one charge for a week without straining (some argue that two). Personally, it does not last more than 5-5.5 days for me (although not such a bad result, but after all, everyone writes at least a week). I tend to think that usually people exaggerate the real life, but maybe others are just using it more economically. For example, I noticed that in my belt purse buttons are periodically pressed accidentally, and Xenium has a peculiarity - it turns on the backlight even when the buttons are locked (in my opinion, to see the time, it would be enough to leave the backlight on when you press the side key), As a result, the battery is eating more (noticed right after buying the bag). Reduced the duration (up to 5 sec.) And brightness (up to 2) of the backlight - it helped a little, but it still falls short of the week. I talk about 7-8 hours a month, use an alarm clock every day, often get on with the menu, organizer, tel. book, and write a little SMS. I also have channel 50 of broadcast SMS configured (this is a network indicator) - it is convenient when you wake up in the train in the middle of the way and want to know where you are, and besides, it looks cool on a screen with an electronic clock (with analog clocks, the date disappears). So, they say that this thing also eats battery power, tk. at the same time, the phone constantly sends requests to the station (although I tried to disconnect it and did not notice much difference). In general, I'm not really complaining about the battery charge - I don't think that other phones will survive that much.

5. Reception and audibility.
The reception was quite decent, there were cases when they did not take phones from friends, but I caught mine (though this did not happen often). And there is another interesting feature about dialing - I don’t know what it’s connected with, but during the "dead" hours (new year), when no one can get through to anyone, the people gave out their phones almost immediately: "The line is overloaded" , and my Xenium tried to connect for a long time and only then gave out the same thing or dialed, in the end I called more often. Although I'm not sure if this is the merit of the phone, but for some reason it tried to connect longer than the others.

The audibility in the phone is not bad, it is especially pleasing that the speakerphone is realized through the same speaker as the usual one. Because at the same time, in very noisy rooms, you can turn on the speakerphone and talk normally by putting the phone to your ear (you will probably hear it), but the second speaker is usually placed on the other side, and then, under the same circumstances, you would have to turn the phone - the microphone would remain on location. As for the hiss, so annoying for everyone: it is in my phone and does not bother me at all, but on the contrary, it allows me to hear that I am still in touch, and not "dropped out" (it appears and disappears along with the connection). By the way, many argue that the "Equalizer" does not work due to the lack of support by our operators of some kind of codec, but it works, and at the same time, changes occur right on the fly (that is, you can just flip through the modes and immediately hear changes). In my opinion, the speakerphone sounds best at high highs, and the normal mode at low ones - it's a pity that you can't adjust each of them separately.

And yet, unfortunately, turning on the speakerphone in Xenium is not very convenient - there is no "hot key" to turn it on, you need to go into the submenu. But that's not all - for some reason, the speakerphone was arranged in a different way in the submenu. Those. if you decide to use the speakerphone, then after selecting the number you press "OK", then the joystick to the right and again "OK" the dictaphone has already been placed on the right (which made it difficult to place it on the left, I personally do not understand).

6. SMS and typing in general.
Xenium is often criticized for the fact that it contains too short Russian SMS and that he allegedly sends several SMS instead of one without the owner's knowledge. As for the first claim, it is not about the phone: the whole point is in the volume of SMS - as far as I remember, 160 characters in Latin, and 2 times less in Cyrillic. The thing is that any character in fonts other than Latin "weighs" 2 times more, since it contains, in addition to its characters, also Latin characters - this is from the field of programming, and a programmer friend explained this to me - explained , as he could explain to me (the "teapot" in these matters), but as I understood, I wrote ☺. And the volume of SMS is a generally accepted standard, that's why they are short messages. In general, to write longer SMS messages, you need to write in Latin, and moreover, not in the Russian language mode, but in the English mode (because if you write in the Russian language mode in Latin characters, this does not mean that you write in Latin - it is still Cyrillic , only the characters are taken from the Latin alphabet, but they "weigh" the same as the Cyrillic characters, so the message is short). In short, you switch your phone to English and write someone an SMS in Latin - then you get your 160 characters, and then, in order not to switch to English, you should use the "Last message" function: you erase the old text by holding the "C" button and write a new one.

By the way, a sure sign that you are writing in English is the T9 mode (there is simply no Russian T9 in Xenium). By the way, because I strongly doubt that someone in our country (and in other non-English-speaking countries) writes SMS in English, and not in transliteration, the ability to turn off T9 completely would not hurt, otherwise you have to do this every time you write an SMS, i.e. you can't do much about T9 transliteration.

Regarding the second claim, this is a blatant lie: Xenium really allows you to write a rather long text (about 1000 characters) on one page, and only then will split it into several SMS, but before sending it, he will ask: "Send 7 pages?" This naturally means that Xenium is going to send 7 SMS, since a text with a length of 1000 characters does not fit into one SMS. So there is one complaint about the phone in this regard - there is no character counter or at least an indication of where exactly the SMS ends, as is done in all Samsungs.

There are two more features. Unpleasant - I still do not understand how Xenium organizes SMS (not alphabetically, and not by time of arrival). And nice - he understands these emoticons ☺ ☹ (maybe I haven't figured everything out) - if you put them at the end of the SMS, he will draw them first.

7. Phone book and call list and groups.
One of the features of the phone book in Xenium is that it works either with a sim or with a book in the phone itself, and at the same time, each of the books has its own characteristics. When working with a phone book on a sim, it is easier to see which phone is recorded under a particular name (in general, this is probably the only plus of this book). The length of the name is very limited, only one number can be written under one name (the phone does not combine several numbers recorded under the same name), there are only three number designations (phone, fax and data), and the numbers themselves can be written less than in the phone ( this parameter depends on the SIM card itself, and how many numbers can be recorded on the SIM, Xenium does not allow determining - try to find out on other phones), and groups are not available with this book. In general, I keep phones in it, which I rarely use and from which they do not call me, so that they do not interfere with the main book. In general, separate books are convenient.

The phone book in the phone allows you to enter up to 500 entries containing the first and last name of 20 characters each, 5 phone numbers that can be designated by 6 types of icons (mobile, home, work, fax, pager and data), as well as 1 email address and 1 note of 50 characters, you can immediately assign a group to which this subscriber will belong.

At the same time, if you add several phones under one name and designate them with different symbols, then after selecting this subscriber in the phone book, you can select the phone you want to call by pressing the joystick left and right (the phone symbol is displayed immediately after the name) - this is very convenient (and this is the function I discovered relatively recently). Unfortunately, this symbol is not displayed during an incoming call - this is a rather big disadvantage, because sometimes it is important to know where a person is calling from. Therefore, if this is critical, then you have to create another record for the same subscriber, but with some designation. Looking ahead, I will note: it is a pity that it is impossible to assign a picture to each number (you can only to a group), but this would be the ideal way to solve the above problem.

There are a few more disadvantages as well. To see which number is recorded under one name or another, you will have to climb quite far along the menu (see below), but even after you get to the number, try to read it again - it is displayed as a creeping line, because you have to enter long numbers (+37529 ... etc.), because Xenium does not know how to check whether the number matches the last digits ☹.

Personally, I do it like this: I select the number of interest to me in the above-described way, press "dial" and immediately "hang up", after that I just climb into the list of outgoing calls - everything is simpler there: just one click on "OK", and in front of you is a number without creeping line, and at the same time the subscriber's name and date and time.

By the way, in Xenium, outgoing, incoming and missed calls are displayed in one list, but with the corresponding symbols. Several calls from (or to) the same subscriber are combined into one and the last call time is indicated. A total of 30 numbers are stored in the list. The list itself is accessible by simply pressing the joystick up or by pressing the green key - this is very convenient (in most phones, to view the list of incoming and missed calls, you will have to go into the menu, sometimes quite deeply).

There are only 10 groups, for each you can choose a call melody and a picture - the so-called "Photo Call" (personally, I think that "Photo Call" is when you can assign a picture to at least each subscriber, and preferably to each number). At the same time, if you assign a picture to the group in full screen, then at the time of the call it will be displayed cropped at the top and bottom, because you need a place for information, in general, it is advisable to assign only small BMPs.

The search in the phone book is implemented as follows: after entering it, you need to hold down "#" - a field appears in which one or several first letters are entered, then "OK" - and you are there (in my opinion, quite convenient). There is no group search. On the one hand, this is also a plus, since no need to think about which group to look in. On the other hand, there is a minus: firstly, with a large number of search records for one letter, it becomes not enough (and a few are too lazy to enter), given that there are many phones that you do not call at all (entered only so that they can be identified by the phone when there is an incoming call) or which you call very rarely, and secondly, sometimes it does not hurt to remember who is in which group and, perhaps, move from one to another (but how to do this if everyone is on the same list - review all?)

8. Menu and management.
The carousel menu is generally quite convenient. Although the icons are plain, they are understandable. In general, everything is intuitive and simple. That’s just to be able to arrange the icons in the carousel at your own discretion, and that is a few blunders.

The aforementioned problem with viewing the number is that the "Show" icon in the submenu of bodies. books are located at the most remote point (you have to turn the menu carousel for a long time), the same problem with the organizer and something else. And at the same time, too much attention was paid to some functions, for example, WAP - it feels like there is no more popular function in the phone: it is the first in the menu, and a separate key was allocated to it, and if you hold down the green key, you will get there again ... The question is, why? I don’t know how much WAP costs in the West, but in our country it’s better to refrain from it at all.

By the way, in connection with so many options for accessing WAP, a tip: in the access settings, configure, for example, WAP 1, and after exiting it, turn on WAP 2 (of course, not configured) - this will help you not to enter there by accident, and when you really need it , just turn on WAP 1 and go (I'm sure you don't need it very often).

The assignment of buttons in Xenium is generally a strange approach: on the joystick (right-left), for some reason, the ringer volume control - you might think I often change it. It would be better to assign more useful functions, for example, a calculator and an organizer, otherwise you have to give them hot keys.

Now about the hotkeys. There are only eight free ones - "1" and "0" are busy with voice mail and language selection, respectively, and you cannot change their assignments. But the remaining 8 can be used either for functions (the number of functions is limited to a certain list), or for speed dialing (very convenient). The same can be done using 40 voice tags (voice commands and dialing), but I do not advise you to abuse this feature, because with a large number of marks, Xenium begins to confuse them.

9. WAP, GPRS, E-Mail and PC synchronization.
As I wrote above, WAP is, perhaps, a convenient thing, but very expensive. GPRS with PC - even more so. In addition, for the latter, you will also need a lace, which will have to be soldered, tk. my native does not allow this, and it is practically impossible to find it, but it costs about $ 50 (on Philipok.ru a whole forum is devoted to this - if you want, figure it out, I personally did not). Synchronization with a PC has the same problem.

"Unfortunately, the built-in e-mail client understands only the" Cyrillic ISO "encoding, which limits the possibilities of its use," - the quote.

I use it to check if there is mail on the server. If there is, I go to one of my friends to pick it up - I temporarily do not have my own modem. That's all the benefits of such an e-mail client.

I almost forgot - you can send yourself a few pictures by mail, and then save them using the client's e-mail on your phone.

Briefly about the rest:

  • The organizer is very useful and not bad (only the types of events are rather strange, especially "Vacation"). The only thing missing is the ability to quickly jump to a specific date in order to see what is scheduled for that day and make adjustments. Well, and maybe the opportunity to enter events indicating the year of its beginning, so that later he would write something like: "Max is 26 years old" or "Wedding is 5 years old". One caveat: the organizer shares the memory with the bodies. book, so that the maximum number of records is 500 - with an empty phone. book (it would be better still more).
  • Alarm clock is also useful and not bad either (especially with "Samba"). But even here there are wishes: a longer call (more than 30 seconds) and its repetition.
  • The calculator is not very convenient to choose an action and for some reason rounds to the nearest hundredth, but the fact that it shows all previously performed actions is interesting.
  • Dictaphone - writes quite well, but for some reason only one record for 30 seconds (what prevented the ability to write while there is memory?)
  • The GSM counter is, of course, a useful thing, but what its functions like "Tariff" and "Balance" give, I still do not understand (in my opinion, they are clearly incomplete).
  • The memory counter seems to be useful, although what is there to count - taking into account all the limitations (dictaphone, melodies, pictures), it is clearly more than enough.
  • The game - I personally do not like it, although when there is nothing to do - without fish ...
  • Screensavers and animations are absolutely useless, and the first ones do not work with the network indicator at all, because the image is constantly updated.

Fuuuu. Look like that's it! ☺

What are you missing in it?

It is in it that the new firmware is missing - many of the more or less significant shortcomings could be quite simply corrected with it, for example: key blocking, gradual strengthening of the call, phone icons and determining the correspondence of the number by the last digits when calling, search by groups, alarm clock repeat, finally, Russian T9, etc. (see above)

    As for future models, then:
    1. Naturally - to avoid the above problems.
    2. More groups and a larger phone book and organizer (since they are combined).
    3. The ability to assign any functions to all function keys in your own way, or at least a more reasonable approach to this (see above).
    4. Polyphony - after all, polyphonic melodies are more diverse, and together with groups, this allows you to know in advance who is calling.
    5. Really metal case, well, or at least the same coating as that of Xenium (on the front and back covers), but all over the case, it is possible with rubberized inserts on the sides (so that it does not slide very much) - I like this business: and more beautiful and more durable (although I understand that it is more expensive).
    6. You can also have a color screen and a normal "Photo Call" (see above), but this is not at all necessary.
    7. Last but not least - better service support from Philips (see below).

In general, I already wrote above that I am looking closely at, in which, as people write, some of the above shortcomings are already absent (I want to believe), although they took away the convenient hint of the next character (the one that is shown at the bottom of the screen when typing) - personally I really like this function, especially since there is no Russian on the keys.

What phone features do you use frequently?

I talk, write SMS, "hot keys" (speed dialing), voice commands, tel. book, organizer, clock, alarm clock, calculator, GSM counter.

What phone features do you use occasionally?

E-mail, WAP, voice recorder, game, memory counter, picture album.

What functions are you not using at all?

Did the phone have to be repaired?

What kind of troubles happened with the phone?

I fell a couple of times, but it didn't hurt very much.

    What glitches have you noticed?

There are infrequent freezes. As a rule, when calling a voice command, it is very rare for nothing. It will hang for a sec. 15-20 and away. I had to turn it off once. Perhaps a flashing would have helped, but as far as I know, there is no new one, I don’t want to pay for flashing the old one (the glitch doesn’t interfere so much), but under the guarantee - I have no idea how to prove that there is a glitch at all, tk. according to the law of meanness, when I try to show a glitch to my friends, Xenium, of course, does not hang. And besides, then you will have to re-fill the phone book and organizer - there is no lace.

Try to compare the phone with other models that you have used.

In fact, I seem to have "got used to" this line of Philips (I don't even consider other options): I really like their strict design, battery longevity and control (everything is on a joystick, and not on two universal keys, like many others), functionality, and, of course, a reasonable price. Therefore, I can no longer objectively compare Xenium with other phones, and there is not much experience of communicating with other phones.

    What else can you say?

There is little hope that such sites are sometimes visited by representatives of phone manufacturers - who it certainly would not harm (after all, there must be some kind of feedback from the manufacturer). This is probably why I decided to write my review in such detail and write in general (I want to believe that it’s not in vain).

I would also like to join the large number of Philips phone users who, to put it mildly, do not praise Philips technical support: neither you have new firmware, nor melodies (you have to select compatible ones from other manufacturers), nor PC laces, nor accessories, nor a normal official website ( there is almost nothing about GSM phones at all), or even normal service centers (judging by the stories). In short, as my friend said after I showed him a review of one of the Philips phones: "Nice phone if it was Samsung." And the point is not even that he loves Samsung phones, but that he loves to flash them himself, or at least upload new melodies, pictures and games to them. The question is, where does popularity come from if you have to ask yourself questions like: "What to do when the battery dies?" If people ask a similar question in Moscow, then what can we say about Belarus. Moreover, I absolutely do not understand why such a situation takes place at all - after all, Philips has been cooperating with Russia for a very long time (even under the tsar, they supplied light bulbs to Russia). It's a shame - after all, the phones are quite good.

Despite the problems listed above, you can safely put 9 points, tk. most of them are more nitpicking and desires for the best, but other phones are also far from ideal, and given the capabilities and price of Xenium, some shortcomings can be forgiven for him. I removed 1 point rather for those. support.

Overall, the phone is excellent. Very suitable for business people who do not like pop bells and whistles (especially like cameras), for whom the main thing is ease of use and functionality, strict style and longevity of the battery. Personally, I have never regretted that I bought it. And craving for is a craving for the best.

: Any product line of manufacturing companies cannot consist of only flagships stuffed with "breakthrough" technologies. It is imperative that intermediate solutions are released, which, perhaps, are not so noticeable, but form a significant volume of sales. Our guest today is just one of those. Meet the Philips model [email protected]

"Licked" design telephone - such thoughts visit at the first glance at the device. And this is not a reproach at all, if you remember the boring appearance of the first phones in the line or, for example, a model.

Let's see if Philips succeeds [email protected] surprise with something other than design. Still, belonging to the Xenium trademark obliges a lot ...

    Contents of delivery

The phone package is traditional for this class of devices, in fact, all Xenium phones are equipped with the same set of accessories. In the standard box of the Xenium line, there is a place for the following:

    • the phone itself

    • rechargeable battery with a capacity of 1050 mAh;

    • interface cable miniUSB - USB;

    • mains charger;

    • a wired stereo headset with a miniUSB connector (the interface connector on the phone case is combined with the headset jack);

    • CD with software;

    • user manual and other printing.

The user does not expect any additional bonuses in the box, at the same time, everything that is necessary for the full-fledged operation of the phone is available.

    Design

We repeat once again, the appearance of the phone is not bad at all. The rounded ergonomic body, among other things, visually decreases in volume - thanks to the narrowed ends at the top and bottom.

The phone itself is completely plastic, which is quite natural for a device that costs about 4 thousand rubles. But the different types of plastic used in Philips [email protected], make the device even more interesting.

The abundance of glossy plastic has long been perceived as a tribute to mobile fashion. In your Philips phone [email protected] gloss is also enough: the display, the back of the phone, and the keyboard. The battery cover is completely made of pleasant and very practical velvety soft-touch plastic.

The ends and bottom of the bezel are made of more boring matte black plastic. The picture is also diversified by the numerous inserts "under chrome" - this is the edging of the case along the perimeter, and the corrugated swing keys for adjusting the volume.

Finally, the distinctive feature of almost all Xenium phones has not gone anywhere - a characteristic navigation block with a stainless steel texture.

On the front panel, above the screen, there is an earpiece. The rear panel features a built-in 2-megapixel camera lens.

On the left side there is a volume rocker key, which is not to say that it is very convenient: two small round buttons practically recessed into the body, which, moreover, have a short stroke.

On the right side there is a slot for memory cards of the microSD format (thus, hot swap is possible), which, however, is not covered with absolutely anything, which raises certain concerns about possible clogging of the slot.

At the bottom there is a miniUSB connector, which is also not covered with any cap.

    Ergonomics and control

The ergonomics of the phone are quite good. Much credit for this belongs to the "licked" shape of the body with numerous rounds and bevels. The phone not only becomes visually smaller, it also improves the usability due to the fact that the device fits well in the hand.

The navigation block, traditional for representatives of the Xenium line, has not undergone any changes in this model: the same 4-way navigation key with an OK button inscribed into it plus soft keys.

The navigation block itself is moderately convenient - the keys have a short but clear stroke, even the inscribed OK button practically does not cause any inconvenience (as was the case in some other Xenium phones, for example), erroneous presses are rare.

The soiling of the glossy keys is perhaps the only gripe that we could address the numeric keypad. Embossed, well spaced across horizontal rows of terraces, the keyboard buttons represent one of the best solutions among the representatives of the Xenium line.

The backlighting of the keyboard is white, quite bright and even.

The quality of the casing materials is also satisfactory - the plastic is scratch-resistant, this applies to all parts of the device - the glossy front and back surfaces, soft-touch cover of the battery compartment cover.

The build quality is another positive aspect of communicating with the device. All parts are tightly fitted to each other, nothing creaks or wobbles.

    Screen

But the screen, frankly, disappointed. In a Philips mobile phone [email protected] not the best quality TFT-matrix is used. The resolution of 176x220 pixels is standard for inexpensive phones, the display is capable of displaying up to 262144 colors and shades.

Much more critical is another issue - the behavior of the display in the sun. Let's just say that already at 4 divisions of brightness (in the phone settings) it becomes more or less comfortable to work with the phone outdoors, at lower settings the display shamelessly fades.

The quality of the screen is also evident in the viewing angles. And they are on the Philips phone [email protected] very small, inverted colors are observed in almost all directions. Thus, the display is one of the weakest points of the phone, consider this in case of purchase.

    Supported interfaces and communications

In this regard, the device is an ordinary solution for an inexpensive phone from a "second tier" manufacturer - a set of communications is standard for any other Philips product. It has GPRS, Bluetooth version 2.0. Synchronization with a computer is carried out using a standard miniUSB-USB cable.

    Machine menu

The software platform used is standard for Philips products. Its advantages include ease of navigation (the presence of number sequences), the presence of interesting and popular applications, as well as some other points. At the same time, the platform is very limited in something - which is clearly seen in the example of the file manager, which does not allow displaying the normal structure of files and folders in the phone and on the memory card.

The phone menu is presented in the form of a 3 x 4 matrix.

In standby mode, the left function key is assigned an exit to the main menu, the right - access to the audio player, pressing the navigation key is assigned access to the main menu.

Various actions are assigned to the deviations of the navigation key, which can be reassigned. But you will not be able to assign and reassign the performance of various actions while holding down the numeric keys, this is a small disadvantage compared to some other Philips devices.

The color scheme of the phone menu is traditionally black for all Philips Xenium products.

Menu navigation is carried out in different ways: using the navigation key or number sequences. You can also navigate between items using the volume rocker.

All menu sub-items are presented in lists.

    Phone book

The telephone directory, like some other mobile phones in the Xenium line, has an average numbering capacity - 500 contacts are available, to which should be added the entries in the SIM card.

When viewing contacts, you can search (only by the first 5 characters of the name), and with the # key you can select the required language (Cyrillic, Latin or digital), in which, in this case, the search will be conducted.

The following fields are available for each contact: name (up to 40 characters), up to 4 phone numbers (number, home number, work phone number, fax), E-mail, birthday. You can assign a melody and a picture, and even a video to the subscriber.

A case-to-case contact can be added to one of 5 groups.

Thus, the telephone directory is in many ways inferior not only to those implemented in phones from other manufacturers, but even to some samples from Philips phones (in particular, Philips [email protected]).

    Posts

Philips phone [email protected] offers users the ability to work with SMS and MMS, as well as send and receive e-mail messages. The phone memory can store up to 480 text messages.

Among others, the user has access to the predictive input system T9, when writing an SMS, the input languages are switched by pressing the # key, the * key is responsible for character input.

There are 10 SMS templates available to the user, as well as five for MMS. Templates are also available for emails.

The volume of one multimedia message or e-mail is limited to 100 Kb. The mail client supports POP3 / IMAP / SMTP mailboxes. You can attach attachments (up to 3 attachments in one letter).

In addition to messages, in this section you can configure the work with voice mail.

    Call log

The call log is divided into 3 sections: missed, dialed numbers and received calls. All calls, missed, received and outgoing calls. Calls from one subscriber are combined.

Each of the tabs can carry information on the last 20 numbers.

You can also view the time and cost of calls, an SMS counter is available, as well as a web traffic counter.

    Games and leisure

At this point, you can find user-installed Java midlets and standard games.

Among the games, we found well-known amusements familiar from other phones of the company: this is the logical game "Mahjong", the well-known "Puzzle" (available in a number of Fly phones - what can you do, because the software platform is actually the same), and also the arcade "Fruit".

    Services

This section contains all the settings for Internet access. There is also a WAP-browser (the phone supports WAP 2.0). Useful resources can be bookmarked.

The browser is of purely academic interest, due to the fact that you can install Opera Mini and use it with much more comfort and less bandwidth.

    Music

In addition to an audio player, you can also find an FM radio, a voice recorder and a simple melody composer.

Supported formats are MP3, AAC, AAC +, WMA. The player works great in the background (the option can be turned off).

The only speaker for music reproduction does not allow the device to be considered a music solution, moreover, it is easy to close it with your hand.

It is worth noting support for the profile of the wireless stereo Bluetooth A2DP. ID3 song tags are supported. Available Shuffle mode and repeat.

In playback mode, the window is overloaded with various information, it is difficult to navigate. The volume is regulated both by the adjustment swing key and by the up and down deviations of the navigation key.

Unfortunately, the limitations of the software platform cause some discomfort - the music to be played in the player must be located in a specific folder. This also applies to all other functions of the phone, it is very inconvenient. We repeat once again that the file system, which distorts the real state of files and folders in the phone's memory and the card, is one of the main inconveniences when working with the phone.

The radio is normal, there is the possibility of autosearch, as well as adding stations manually. Naturally, the radio does not work without a headset. There is no recording function, and even if it were, the sound quality would be far from ideal. This can be seen on the example of a voice recorder.

As for the composer of melodies, there is nothing special to say, fun for one or two times, which allows you to compose simple compositions and save them in * .imy format.

    Multimedia

All the most popular phone functions are located here, namely the camera, image viewer, video recorder, video player and photo editor.

    Camera

Philips [email protected] has a 2-megapixel camera without autofocus and other newfangled things. The quality of the photos by modern standards is low (despite the resolution), the details are disgusting, there are a lot of blurry, blurry pictures. Photos are noisy indoors. Taking pictures of various texts does not make sense at all.

There is no mirror or flash in the phone, just as there is no dedicated camera key on the body.

The camera interface is semi-transparent. Conveniently, you can change the settings using the number keys.

The following picture resolutions are possible: 176x220, 320x240, 640x480, 1280x1024, 1600x1200 pixels. You can select the image compression quality (normal, high, excellent), select the frequency (you need it if you need to shoot a TV for some reason), image quality, use various effects, apply multi-shooting, timer, select a memory device - a storage device for storing photos.

You can change the white balance, select the scene mode (auto or night mode), even set the ISO value. There are a couple of frames for everyone.

Once again, the quality of the installed module is very low, the percentage of good photos is small. A weak camera, along with a display, is one of the main drawbacks of the phone (however, what else can you expect from a budget device?)

The photo editor is quite interesting, you can apply several effects, change the picture parameters (brightness, contrast, etc.), create a mosaic of several pictures.

    File Manager

This is a standard file manager, however, due to the limited functionality of the software platform, it is far from the most convenient and intuitive. The user has access to several specific folders - Pictures, Sounds, Videos and Others - all other files are dumped into the latter. Access to the rest of the folders, which, for example, are stored on your memory card, is closed, which is sometimes very annoying.

When viewing a photo, a thumbnail appears in the status bar, and information on the file size is also given.

The phone's own memory is about 25 MB, which is still not enough for full-fledged work with the phone. Use microSD cards, they are hot swappable.

    Diary

Collected here are a variety of organizer applications.

The calendar allows you to view and add events and reminders. Viewing is carried out on a monthly basis.

Calculator simple, not engineering, allows you to perform only basic operations with numbers.

To-do list allows you to create a task, and you can select the type - reminder, event, date, etc.

Alarm quite functional, it allows you to create up to five different recordings, and as a melody you can set not only a standard sound, but also a radio signal.

World clock Is a standard feature in Fly and Philips phones.

There are several more appendices in the "additional" section.

Stopwatch- an interesting application for athletes, two modes are available.

Unit converter not as functional as in the same Philips [email protected], it allows you to translate only units of weight and length.

A simple currency converter is also available here, as well as a very interesting application - a text file reader. The program has numerous settings, including the choice of font style, the ability to autoscroll, scrolling speed, etc.

    Profiles

In the section, you can configure up to 6 different profiles. You can either select melodies for various actions and events, the type of signal, and set its volume, set an additional melody.

    Compound

Here you can set up a connection to a computer using miniUSB or using a wireless interface Bluetooth version 2.0 (a list of supported profiles is indicated).

    Settings

Finally, the last section contains all the settings of the device.

You can set the time and date, select a menu language, change display settings, select a welcome text, set speed dial numbers, and more.

In the display settings, you can change the standby wallpaper, set the backlight level and its duration.

From the call settings, the most interesting is the blacklist function; here you can also set up call forwarding, call waiting and call reminders, as well as other settings.

    There are security settings.

The last item - sound effect - hides an equalizer with several style presets (rock, classic, party, etc.), as well as a surround sound function.

    Java performance and work

The phone's performance is similar to other Philips solutions. When working with the menu, there are no slowdowns, navigation is carried out without delays, the drawing of thumbnails in the file manager is quite fast.

Working with Java-applications and games is possible, it is implemented at the usual level for Philips phones. The performance of the device was evaluated using the Jbenchmark benchmark package. The results demonstrated by the phone are average, so, they are comparable to the mid-range devices from Nokia (S40 platform), but they are inferior to more advanced phones.

Java 3D profiles are not supported, which is not surprising given the budget of the Philips phone platform [email protected]

    Jbenchmark 1 performance test

    Jbenchmark 2 performance test

    Battery life

To be honest, we don't even know how to characterize the phone in terms of battery life. If we take into account regular mobile phones, then yes, Philips [email protected] looks very confident in their company. At the same time, even against the background of its products from the Xenium line, the phone looks very, very pale - we are talking not only about such monsters as Philips [email protected](and its replacement X500), but even a device like Philips [email protected]

With an average load (10-15 minutes of calls a day, some photos, some music, working with Java applications, a couple of SMS) the phone worked for almost four days. At the same time, it is noticeable that the "survivability" of the device manifests itself every other time - for example, in one of the cycles the phone worked for only two (!) Days, moreover, with a minimum load (a total of about 10 minutes, again, a couple of SMS - phone used as the second). This is very small, such a sharp drop in values is discouraging.

Thus, against the background of colleagues from the long-playing line of Xenium, the Philips phone [email protected] frankly lost, it makes no sense to take it solely for the sake of the battery - it's better to look at other models of the company. If we talk about modern phones in general, then yes, the chances of the device are much higher, but this is a matter of taste - how many people will be there who would prefer a Philips phone to devices from leading manufacturers?

It remains to add that the battery charging time is just over 2 hours.

    Characteristics table

    Outcomes

What to say about Philips phone [email protected] in custody? Before us is an ordinary device by today's standards, with functionality standard for its price range. Unlike some other representatives of the Xenium line (we are talking about Philips [email protected] first of all) the phone has a moderately interesting design. Don't discount the phone's trump card - the comparatively long battery life, even though the values shown by Philips [email protected], not so impressive if we consider other devices of the line (besides, one should not discount the fluctuations of work cycles - the phone can be discharged to zero in literally 2 days, for no apparent reason).

The handset can be recommended to all those who are looking for a well-tailored and tightly stitched work phone, without unnecessary claims for multimedia functions. High-quality case materials only enhance the pleasant impression.

At the same time, at a price of about 4 thousand rubles and competitors from Philips [email protected] a lot. Virtually every vendor is represented at this price point with their product, and Philips [email protected] it will be very difficult.

So, we can recall such phones as (almost the same capabilities), (worse camera, less internal memory, etc.), (a cheaper model with a less remarkable display, weaker functionality),. In addition, you should not discount other Philips phones - the company's new products appear quite quickly, and among them it is quite possible to find something even more suitable (among the phones costing about 4 thousand rubles, for example, the one already mentioned).

This is not to say that Philips [email protected] against their background, it is frankly lost, the model has its own face, for sure it will receive recognition from a fairly wide range of users.

We will not add the battery life to either the pluses or the minuses. For some, the values will be acceptable, for others they will not.

Let's note other advantages and disadvantages of the model.

    Pros of the model:

    • design;

    • practical body, materials.

    Minuses:

    • mediocre screen;

    • limitations of the MTK software platform (which is especially evident in the example of the file manager);

    • bad camera.
