General characteristics

A type

Determining the type of device (phone or smartphone?) Is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to opt for a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly shorter than that of a simple phone.

Almost all modern smartphones have Wi-Fi and USB interfaces. Bluetooth and IRDA are less common. Wi-Fi is used to connect to the internet. USB is used to connect the phone to a computer. Many phones also have Bluetooth. It is used to connect wireless headphones, to connect the phone to wireless speakers, and to transfer files. A smartphone equipped with an IRDA interface can be used as a universal remote control.

Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB Satellite navigation

Built-in GPS and GLONASS modules allow you to determine the coordinates of the phone using signals from satellites. In the absence of GPS, a modern smartphone can determine its own location using signals from the base stations of a cellular operator. However, finding coordinates based on signals from satellites is usually much more accurate.

OPPO has officially unveiled the flagship R9 Plus, which could be a real breakthrough for the company. The developers used new technologies that were left out in the manufacture of the previous R-series models. The main feature was a revolutionary solution regarding cameras, but about everything in turn.

Design and functionality

From the first glance at the R9 Plus, it becomes clear that the developers wanted to create an elegant, executive smartphone that will emphasize the high social status of the owner. There is nothing superfluous on the casing, it has no sharp corners, so the phone fits comfortably in the hand. And all this with dimensions of 163.1 x 80.78 x 7.4 mm and a weight of 185 g.

A peculiar uniqueness and modernity of the design is given by the 1.76 mm thick bezel around the case. However, in general, the appearance has no unique features: all the elements provided have already been used in smartphones from other manufacturers more than once.

OPPO has used a fingerprint scanner for the first time, which is undoubtedly the right move to achieve popularity. It is combined with the physical Home button and is located on the front panel under the screen. An oval was chosen as a form factor.

Above the screen is a speaker, a set of sensors and a front-facing camera, which is the main attraction of the R9 Plus. The back cover houses the main camera with LED flash, and the company logo flaunts in the center.

All the necessary buttons and connectors are located on the side faces. On the left is the volume rocker, on the right is the power button and microSD slot. Below is a connector for synchronization with microUSB devices, a 3.5 mm audio output and a stereo speaker, which is emphasized by the "radiator" design of the body section.

Screen and camera

OPPO R9 Plus specifications can really surprise you. The display has a diagonal of 6 inches and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Brightness values are high, therefore, high-quality display of information is guaranteed even in direct sunlight. Viewing angle before distortion appears approximately 160 °. The manufacturer did not indicate the technology by which the screen was made. There is a possibility that an AMOLED panel was used.

So we got to the main exhibit of the exhibition - the front camera. She received a 16 MP sensor with an f / 2.0 aperture. In simple terms, the camera is able to collect light very quickly and take a picture without diffraction distortion of details. In addition, the lens is equipped with a stabilizer and autofocus.

The main camera also received 16 megapixels and is represented by a 6-element Sony IMX298 module.

Performance and autonomy

As already mentioned, the R9 Plus belongs to the category of flagships, albeit not of the highest level. The vital functions of the device are provided by the Snapdragon 652 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Built-in memory for storing information is available in two versions - 64 or 128 GB.

Unlike many manufacturers, OPPO has taken care of the flagship's battery life. He received a battery with a capacity of 4120 mAh, which ensures active use of the phone throughout the day. This is a good indicator considering the screen size and high performance.

Confidence in battery life is ensured by VOOC fast charging technology, which allows you to get about 70% of the charge in just 30 minutes.

Operating system and price

In terms of software, the company gave up. The smartphone runs Android 5.1, so many modern features and functions will simply be unavailable. The manufacturer does not explain what is the reason for such a decision, but this can greatly damage the reputation of the gadget.

According to preliminary data, OPPO R9 Plus will go on sale on April 12. With support for LTE networks, Wi-Fi 802.11ac wireless data transmission and 64 GB of flash memory, the flagship will be available for $ 510.

Oppo always offers great build quality on their smartphones and the company has outdone itself with its latest R9s. The design is far from the original, but the execution is a clear trump card in the hand of the company. The smartphone is thin and light. And the six-string antenna design is the first of its kind. Also, this phone has focused on a powerful camera and long battery life, without going beyond the price of the flagship. The 5.5-inch AMOLED screen and ColorOS on top of Android are the perfect cherry on the cake.

Key features of the Oppo R9s:

- thin and light metal body with "six-string" antenna lines;

- 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution and 401 ppi; 2.5D Gorilla Glass;

- ColorOSv3.0.0, over Android 6.0;

- very fast and accurate fingerprint reader in the Home button;

- Octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor with 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 cores; graphics chip Adreno 506; 4 GB of RAM;

- main camera 16 MP, F / 1.7, autofocus, Dual Pixel, video recording 2160p at 30 frames per second;

- selfie camera 16 megapixels, F / 2.0, video recording 1080p at 30 frames per second;

- 64 GB of internal memory and a slot for microSD memory cards (hybrid second slot);

- active noise reduction system;

- Non-removable 3010 mAh battery with VOOC fast charging.

Main disadvantages:

- the overall design spoils the excellent build quality;

- there are faster chipsets in this price range;

- no optical stabilization in the camera, no 1080p recording at 60 frames per second;

- not the most recent version of Android OS, and when the update will be unclear.

The 3,010mAh battery might not sound like a lot, but that's more than the iPhone 7 Plus and the same as the Galaxy Note5. The 14nm processor is not fast, but it supports fast charging and does not heat up the handset. The hexagonal stripes on the body (three at the top and three at the bottom) look somewhat new, but this is just one strip, divided into several parts to make it look cooler.

Package

Most phones come in small boxes these days, but the Oppo R9s comes in a big, pretty package. In addition to the handset, the kit includes a VOOC fast charger. It gives a total of 20 watts of power, while other manufacturers prefer to settle for 15. Also here is the familiar USB cable. And if you need a second cable for the future, look to have it specifically VOOC compatible. Also in the box are headphones with one remote control button. Some markets will also offer a transparent phone case.

The tube itself measures 153 x 74.3 x 6.6 mm and weighs 145 grams. So the phone is significantly smaller in all dimensions than the iPhone 7 Plus, with both phones having 5.5-inch screens and a fingerprint sensor on the Home button.

Hardware

Oppo has used the same plan for several of its phones, including the R9 Plus, which predates the S-series. So the body is all-metal, with a glass insert on the front, the corners and sides are rounded. The traditional material that the company still uses today has not disappeared. The antennas have slightly changed. More precisely, they tripled. From two wide stripes, we got six small ones. But there is nothing unusual about this six-string design. Everything works exactly the same as usual in terms of communication.

The metal has a satin finish, is soft to the touch and tends to hide fingerprints. It's better than the glossy polished finish that smartphones have been taking over the market lately. Only the bezel around the glass on the front has been polished to a shine for the phone to play in the sun.

Overall, we give Oppo the highest build scores. There is nothing to complain about: the body is thin and light, the battery is capacious, the edges are rounded, the front glass is Gorilla Glass, and with 2.5D curvatures. Your phone comes with a pre-applied screen protector.

At the bottom of the screen we find a fingerprint reader built into the Home key. On either side of it are touch-sensitive navigation keys with dim white backlighting.

The front camera is usually located above the smartphone screen. It's unusual that it is in no way inferior to the main one, except for video recording. In any case, both sensors offer 16 megapixels. Only one shoots in Full HD, the other in UHD. Also, the main camera on the back has dual pixel autofocus technology, which allows for better light capture in low light conditions. Near both cameras are light and proximity and backlight sensors.

A microUSB 2.0 port with support for VOOC fast charging sits at the bottom of the phone, flanked by a 3.5mm headphone jack and a grill that hides the speaker. The second lattice is a snag for symmetry. A microphone is hidden at the top of the phone. Another one is also in the back, next to the camera.

Final Words

We're quite impressed with the Oppo R9s, although not everyone will want a Snapdragon 625 processor on their flagship phone. But with the amount of memory and the ability to record 2160p video, everything is in order. So the processor in this case will only make you nervous if you look at the comparative tests.

The gaze will catch on the design of the six-band antenna. The R9s has the same screen size as the iPhone 7 Plus, but the audio jack remains. And the body is lighter and more compact. The fingerprint scanner is even faster than Apple's.

In general, this is an excellent midranger with the makings of a flagship, at a low price. It has dozens of worthy competitors in the Chinese market. Among the already large selection in the Android world, this phone does not really stand out.
