Do-it-yourself snow shield. How to make a snow scraper: materials and instructions for self-production. Homemade snow removal tools

Despite all the talk about global warming, winters in most regions of our country continue to be severe, so it is not uncommon for heavy snowfall to impede the movement of vehicles and even the movement of passers-by in courtyards and streets. Especially relevant this question for cottage owners or country houses, since they only have to rely on own forces. Of course, you can buy a mini snowplow, but not everyone can afford it. In addition, sometimes its use is difficult and even impossible, so the snow scraper continues to be a popular tool.

How to choose

Today in stores you can find a variety of scrapers for cleaning sidewalks, yards and steps. They are mechanical and manual. If you are not ready for big expenses, then you will have to purchase a manual scraper. It is often called in the English manner a pusher or a scraper, emphasizing the main purpose of this product - to push and scrape. Regardless of whether we are talking about a store product or deciding how to make a snow scraper with your own hands, it should be:

  • light;
  • durable;
  • having a comfortable non-slip handle made of a material with poor thermal conductivity, which will prevent freezing of the hands of the person performing the cleaning.

From what has been said, it is clear that when choosing a snow scraper, it is better to pay attention to options made of plastic or aluminum, as they are durable and at the same time light. In this case, the one who will be cleaning will get tired less, and the likelihood that the device will break will be reduced to zero. In addition, it is desirable that the handle be covered with rubber to prevent slipping of the hands, and the height of the tool should correspond to the height of the person who will use it, since working in a hunched position is not particularly convenient.

DIY snow scraper (shovel type)

Everything said about the choice of such devices in the store applies to homemade tools for clearing the yard or sidewalks. The easiest way to make a manual scraper that resembles a shovel. For its manufacture, you can use an ordinary aluminum sheet measuring 40-50 cm, bent along top edge so that a side 4-5 cm high is formed. You can also bend the side sides, and make the handle in the form of a frame, which happens with a garden wheelbarrow.

wooden scraper

To make a do-it-yourself snow scraper with sides made of pine board dimensions 210x23x2.5 cm, you will also need a rail of the same material with a length of 280, a width of 8, and a thickness of 2.5 cm. You will also need to use a sheet of galvanized iron measuring 73 by 70 cm.

Instead of a rail, a round handle of an old shovel is also suitable as a handle for a scraper. Moreover, the width and length of the scraper can be taken different from those indicated, taking into account the fact that the device must pass freely through the gate.

The bottom of the scraper is made from an iron sheet, to which the sides cut from the board are attached with screws or self-tapping screws. Such a tool can come in handy in the spring, as by adding wheels from a baby stroller to it and strengthening the bottom wooden slats, you can turn it into a light wheelbarrow for the removal of sawdust and debris. In this case, the wheel axle must be placed between 2 boards and secured on 2 sides with metal plates.

Scraper on wheels

Rolling is always easier than dragging. Having guessed this, our distant ancestors invented wheels. They can also be used to facilitate the process of removing snow with a manual scraper. For the manufacture of such a modernized device, you will need a plastic or aluminum pipe with a diameter of 27 cm, from which you need to cut a sector with a side part length 2-3 cm less than the circumference of the section. The result is a part that will be used as a blade. As for the frame, an old baby stroller will come in handy to create it, which is sure to be found in any home where there are preschoolers or schoolchildren. You will also need to get old water pipes. Next, you need to perform the following operations:

  • create slots in the pipes on one side for the axle of the wheels, and on the other, weld them to the blade;
  • from metal corners make ears for fastening racks;
  • make 3 holes in the top of the racks so that you can control the height of the handle;
  • if it is supposed to use such a home-made scraper for cleaning snow on asphalt, then you can attach a protective conveyor belt to the lower edge of the blade;
  • paint the scraper to protect the metal from corrosion and give the tool a finished, presentable look.

Such a product will be a great helper, as it is convenient to use and does not scratch pavement. In addition, it can be adjusted in height to suit the user.

Homemade snow scraper on skids: what you need

Wheels are not the only way to make the scraper easier to move. It will be easy to move if you install the blade on the skids.

For the manufacture of such useful device will need:

  • metal, preferably aluminum sheet measuring 800 by 1500 mm;
  • thin pipe for the handle;
  • two parts of a metal corner, each 1 m long, which will play the role of skids.

How to make a skid scraper

To make a scraper that slides freely on the snow, you need:

  • bend the tips of metal knots;
  • attach a handle to them at a distance of 25-35 mm from the front end of the runners;
  • retreating 2 mm forward from the racks, install 2 pins;
  • fix the scraper;
  • install the top of the blade using clamps to help control the height of the device.

If the snow scraper, the photo of the diagram of which is presented below, is intended for a summer residence and it may need to be transported by car, then the scraper can be made collapsible.

Motorized option

Cleaning the yard and street in winter can be made easier if you make a do-it-yourself snow scraper based on a walk-behind tractor. To do this, you do not have to make any special efforts, since it is enough to attach a snow-removing cloth to the bumper, made, for example, from a curved stainless steel sheet.

Making a manual snow scraper

You can also use a ready dump. You can also install a snow shovel on your bike by attaching it below the handlebars.

Plywood scraper

If the scraper is needed urgently and it is supposed to be used for only one season, then such a tool can be made in a couple of hours. To quickly make a snow scraper with your own hands, you will need a sheet of thick plywood measuring 50 by 50 cm, the surface of which should be treated with water-repellent impregnation, and the edge - epoxy resin. On both sides it should be finished with aluminum to ensure ease of sliding. As for the handle, it needs to be made somewhat shorter than that of ordinary shovels, and the edge that was supposed to be attached to the scraper needs to be cut at an angle of 45 degrees. In order for the scraper to turn out to be reliable, you need to drill 6 mm holes in two places and put bolts and nuts. Next, the stalk should be fixed with wooden plank so as to increase the angle of attachment.

Now you know several ways to make a snow scraper and you can meet the winter fully armed.

Today, buying a snow scraper is not a problem, just like choosing a good snow blower.

Snow removal: a comparative review of snow removal equipment

However, for those people who like to make everything with their own hands, making a snow scraper will not be difficult.

To make a simple, but at the same time reliable scraper, you will need a minimum of bench tools and the most common materials that can always be found in the garage.

So, this article will be devoted to how to make a snow scraper with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself snow scraper

There are plenty of options on how to make a scraper for cleaning snow today. For these purposes, you can use both wood and sheet metal. If there is a piece of unnecessary metal pipe large diameter, then, as it turns out, and it can be used to make a scraper.

Wooden snow scraper

Making a scraper for cleaning snow from wood is as easy as shelling pears. This will require a piece of chipboard or another durable plywood. The dimensions of the future snow scraper do not need to be made too large, otherwise, cleaning wet sticky snow can become a nightmare.

It is important to beat one edge of the scraper, the one that will be working, with a piece of tin so that the sliding of the scraper on the snow would not cause obstacles during operation. The handles of a homemade scraper can be made from bars by attaching them with screws to working surface.
So that during operation, the handles of the snow scraper do not loosen, it is important to reinforce them with sloping crossbars from a piece of not too thick board. At this point, the process of making a homemade snow scraper is ready.

Metal scraper for snow

To make a snow scraper from a bush sheet metal, would need welding inverter and ability to work with it. Of course, you can assemble a snow scraper and on threaded connection using long bolts with nuts and wide washers for this.

But it is still better to assemble the snow scraper by welding, because in this case it will turn out to be as strong and stable as possible during operation. In general, making a metal snow scraper is no different from assembling a wooden scraper.

There is another option for making a snow scraper from a piece of large-diameter metal pipe. To do this, the pipe must be cut lengthwise into two parts. One of the parts that will be used is fixed with clamps on a two-wheeled wheelbarrow, as in the pictures above.

If there is no piece of pipe, then the scraper can also be made from a sheet of thick tin, after bending it into a semicircular shape. In this case, the scraper should be fastened to the wheelbarrow using long bolts, having previously drilled through holes in the body of the wheelbarrow for this.

Buying a ready-made snow blower is easy.

But if there are details, even if not quite suitable, they can be assembled and you can get a completely working do-it-yourself unit.

The design of a homemade snow blower

As a basis, I used a flanged asynchronous three-phase electric motor with a power of 2.2 kW. giving 3000 rpm (1). A pulley from a VAZ car (2) was pressed onto its shaft, 4 blades measuring 12 × 15 cm each, steel, 3 mm thick, were welded to the pulley.

Around the resulting "fan" I assembled a body with snow-guiding blades (also made of 3 mm steel) and a pipe for ejecting snow.

The housing was fixed on the motor flange with four M10 bolts.

Pipe (3) - sewer plastic, 30 cm long - fixed in wood detail by sawing out the required size hole electric jigsaw. Reliable fastening provided with self-tapping screws screwed on three sides. I fixed the wooden part with the pipe with the same screws on the fan housing. On this pipe (to direct the flow of snow) put on a half-branch (4) of the same diameter by 120 °.

I welded guide skids from a 35 mm steel angle to the fan housing and a steering wheel (5) - a water pipe with a diameter of 20 mm, on which I fixed a packet switch (6).

During operation, it turned out that the motor was under too much load. The problem was solved by removing two of the four fan blades. This did not affect the performance of the snow blower.

Homemade snow removal tools

Snowy winter brings a lot of worries for the owners of suburban areas. One of them is snow removal. We will tell you what tools to quickly and with less effort clear the paths in the garden, the parking lot, the entrances to the house after a snowfall.

If you just need to clean the path to the house or the parking lot for the car, then the easiest way to do this is with the help of manual equipment. These can be shovels or scrapers (they are also called drag scrapers).

Despite the apparent fragility, plastic shovels are reliable assistants in snow removal.

There are many types of shovels designed for snow removal. They differ in size and are aluminum, plastic, wood. The lightest and most popular among summer residents are shovels with a plastic scoop. Modern manufacturers offer products from high-quality frost-resistant plastic.

Therefore, despite the apparent fragility, they will serve you for a long time. The larger the area of the shovel bucket and the higher the sides, the more snow is placed in it - accordingly, the faster the work will go. But it must be borne in mind that the mass of an average bucket with a load, depending on the moisture content of the snow, can reach up to 15 kg! So choose a shovel according to your abilities.

The front edge of the bucket for many shovels is reinforced with a metal lining that protects it from breakage.

When choosing a shovel, it will be useful to take a closer look not only at the volume of the bucket, but also at the handle. The handle should be light and strong, and its length should allow you to work without bending too much. Metal shovels are not much different from plastic ones. Unless they are more durable, but they will also cost about twice as much. But we suggest making a wooden shovel yourself.

Homemade shovel

To make a wooden snow shovel, you will need the following materials:

  • wooden handle 40 mm and 2 m long;
  • a sheet of plywood measuring 40 x 40 cm;
  • board with a section of 100 * 25 mm and a length of 40 cm;
  • strips of galvanized iron sheet 5-7 cm wide.

To start doing back wall ladle from a board, one edge of which is sawn in an arc. A hole is drilled in the center of the workpiece according to the diameter of the handle. It is better to make a hole at a slight angle to ensure a comfortable fit for the handle. Next, a sheet of plywood is attached to the workpiece as a ladle and the handle is tried on: it will need to be cut at an angle so that it fits snugly against the plywood. After that, it is fixed exactly in the center. When all the parts are assembled together, the joints and the working edge of the shovel are upholstered with strips of sheet iron to increase strength and durability.

Scraper-drag from ... OSB!

From the half of the 0SB sheet left after the construction of the house, you can make a simple scraper for clearing snow on paved areas. To make the tool comfortable and maneuverable, it can be narrowed at the top - about 30 cm from each edge: the scraper will become lighter without loss of performance. And for safety, we recommend cutting off the sharp corners that have turned out below, as well as rounding and sanding the remaining corners and edges. Don't forget to cut holes for the hands to make it easier to move the scraper.

Snowplows

On a large area, the most effective will be the use of snowplows. They are designed in such a way that they not only rake the snow, but also throw it a considerable distance. The dimensions, snow throwing range, performance and cost of such machines can vary over a wide range.

According to the type of engine, snow blowers can be divided into electric and gasoline. Electric ones have a relatively low price and a small mass, which makes it easier to work with them. The main disadvantages are associated with binding to a power source. In addition to using a good long wire, you also need to make sure that it does not get in the way. The power of electric snow blowers is not very high - it does not exceed 5 hp. with.

And here snowplows with gasoline engines have a capacity of about 6-15 liters. with. Them distinctive features- maneuverability and independence from power sources. Such snow blowers can be used without much effort, clearing large snow-covered areas.

3 pros and no cons

I present to the attention of all handy summer residents a universal mini-scraper. It is very simple to make it, and the benefits of it are a wagon and a small cart.

Well, firstly, it has a small weight, and therefore you can easily and quickly remove snow with it (work productivity increases significantly). Yes, not just clean up, but how to transport it somewhere on a sled to virgin lands. Secondly, it is convenient to remove snow from roofs with such a scraper without damaging the coating. Thirdly, in the summer you can make a trolley out of it by screwing the wheels to it.

And now the important remarks. The height of the handle should be at waist level. It is better to assemble the scraper bucket on self-tapping screws so that everything can be disassembled on occasion.

Vasily Ivanovich Pikulev. Kudymkar Perm Territory

Snow scraper

It took: a strip of sheet metal 100 mm wide, a metal sheet, self-tapping screws, screwdriver, tape measure, pencil, steel corners, press washers, hinges, metal shears, wooden pole.

To make it convenient to clean the snow from the roof (and not swim in it!), I made a special scraper.

Strong frame

I bent a strip of sheet metal into a frame 800 × 400 mm in size, rounding its corners (1) and overlapping the edges with small self-cutters (photo 1)

By the way

Rectangle size 800×400 cm

In the middle of the workpiece, across, I installed a partition (2) made of sheet metal. I attached it to the frame with one edge using small steel corners and self-tapping screws with a press washer. On the other side, I attached the plate with self-tapping screws to a wooden pole - the handle of the product.

Light flaps

I cut out two flap strips (3) 420 mm long from sheet metal. I attached each blank to the frame on both sides of the partition on the hinges with self-tapping screws (photo 2)

In the lower part of the partition (on both sides) I installed stop rods for the flaps from long self-tapping screws with cut off caps (4)

Operating principle

For convenience, when cleaning the roof, I stand on a chair, take a pole with a scraper and direct it up from me along the roof. At the same time, the ribs of the frame, and then the fenders (lying on the stops) cut the snow - it creates pressure on the entire structure, pressing it more tightly against the roof.

When the device moves back, the snow mass rests on the flaps from below, bringing them to a vertical position and allowing the snow to move to the edge of the roof.

This scraper was appreciated by all fellow villagers - even skeptics!

On a note

For the convenience of cleaning sloping roofs from snow, the pole must be attached to the frame at an angle, depending on the characteristics of the roof. In addition, with a small growth of the user, it is better to make the angle sharp, and for a tall person it will be more convenient - 90 degrees.

This simple tool in the winter becomes indispensable assistant for a person. After a snowfall, without a good shovel, it is not easy to get to the porch of the house, drive into the garage or get into the barn.

Someone might say that snow removal equipment hasn't changed since his grandfather went to school. In fact, the tools for fighting snowdrifts have been continuously improved, making our work easier.

Today we will look at various options shovels for snow removal and get acquainted with their features. We will give recommendations on the choice, indicate approximate prices and inform helpful tips for do-it-yourselfers.

Types of shovels for snow removal

The classic design of a snow shovel is well known to everyone. This is a long handle-handle, on which a wide bucket is fixed.

Classic wooden shovel

Until recently, two materials were used for the manufacture of ladles and cuttings: wood and metal (steel and aluminum).

Today they are supplemented by composite plastic, resistant to frost and mechanical stress.

Anyone who worked with a plastic shovel probably appreciated its main advantage - light weight. It does not get wet from snow, like wood and does not rust like steel. There are doubts about the durability of plastic, but it is usually enough for 4-5 cleaning seasons.

A compact snow shovel is called an automobile. It is used by drivers to clear the parking lot and enter the garage. For ease of transportation in the trunk, such tools are made folding, collapsible or placed on telescopic handles.

Folding car shovel

A shovel with a telescopic handle is convenient to transport and can be easily adjusted to a person's height.

The second popular type of snow removal tool is a scraper or drag (engine). It differs from its relative in a wide arched handle and an impressive width of the bucket.

The element of this design is light and loose snow. It is impossible to work with a snow scraper on a caked and frozen crust. Here you have to use an ordinary shovel according to the principle - "slowly but surely."

In search of a compromise, the designers developed a hybrid of a snow shovel and a scraper. It is equally well suited for both throwing snow and moving it.

Combined shovel-scraper

Turning to mechanized models, consider a snow blower for cleaning snow with an auger. Its advantage over the "old-fashioned" tool is ease of use. No load on the lower back. You push the bucket in front of you, and the auger rotates and throws the snow to the side.

Unfortunately, this mechanism can be confidently operated only with a thin layer of loose snow (up to 15 cm). A thicker layer stops the auger.

In the category of super-shovels for snow removal, you can add a device called a manual bulldozer. This is a four-wheel cart with a blade. Large working width and ability to work in full height, make the mobile shovel an indispensable assistant when cleaning large areas.

The power of a manual bulldozer is 1 human power!

The angle of rotation of the blade is adjustable here, allowing you to work with both light and loose, and with fairly heavy snow.

A simplified version of a snow shovel on wheels is a two-wheeled model. It is less productive, but very convenient to use. The wheel axle allows you to raise the blade during operation, avoiding impacts on the unevenness of the road surface.

Among the unusual design solutions one-wheeled shovel can be noted. It is not yet found in our stores. They came up with it in the West and dubbed it the "snow wolf." Outwardly, the awkward design, according to the owners, is very maneuverable and easy to use.

One wheel shovel with swing handle

The essence of the idea is to use a large wheel, on the axis of which the handle is hinged. On one side it ends with bicycle "horns", and on the other side it is connected to a plastic bucket. Raking snow, its owner moves around the site. Approaching the storage area, he abruptly lowers the handles. The bucket rises and throws the collected snow forward. Constantly bending down, tiring the muscles of the back, in this case is not necessary.

The next level of design “pumping” is an electric snow shovel.

The principle of its operation is simple: the electric motor rotates the rubber auger, which throws the snow to the side. This mechanism is good when you need to remove the snow cover of small thickness. It is not suitable for dealing with snowdrifts and ice.

Despite the durability and strength of the metal, plastic shovels are becoming the leaders in demand today. As we have said, they are lighter than steel and wood. This fact is of paramount importance when cleaning a large area.

When choosing a plastic shovel, you should pay attention to the depth of the bucket and the presence of a protective lining on its working edge. A capacious bucket speeds up the cleaning process, and a protective edging protects the plastic from wear.

The quality of the plastic is checked very simply: the tool is obliquely rested on the floor and the handle is pressed hard on it. If the bucket is elastically deformed without cracking, then the product will not break from frequent contact with packed snow.

The D-shaped handle enhances ease of use. It increases the power of the throw and prevents the hand from slipping off the handle. The presence of longitudinal ribs on the bucket is another plus in favor of the purchase. They increase rigidity and improve tool glide.

Regarding the material, the following should be said. A wooden shovel with a plywood bucket is inferior to a plastic one. Wet snow quickly sticks to it, increasing the weight of the tool. Contact with moisture causes the plywood to swell and warp.

Aluminum shovels occupy a middle position between wooden and plastic ones. They are light, strong and durable, but very expensive.

Steel buckets are the most reliable, but also the heaviest. With such equipment, you can work on dense snow and knock down thin ice.

Having decided on the material, you should pay attention to the length of the handle (handle). It should not be too short so that you do not have to work, bending over low.

You need to buy a snow scraper as light as possible in order to get less tired when cleaning a large area. It must be equipped with wheels or "skis" - two protruding bars on the bottom of the bucket. They reduce friction on the snow, making it easier to move the tool.

Estimated prices

The simplest plywood shovel can be purchased at a price of 150 rubles.

The cost of a snowplow with a steel bucket and a wooden handle starts at 300 rubles per piece.

Prices for simple aluminum shovels range from 600 to 700 rubles.

Sellers offer a Fiskars plastic shovel with an ergonomic handle, a plastic, wooden or aluminum handle at a price of 900 rubles. More advanced models with a wide bucket (scrapers) reach a price of 2 thousand rubles.

Bestseller FISKARS 142610, price from 900 rubles for 2016-2017

The cost of a simple snow plow with a plastic bucket ranges from 750 to 2000 rubles.

A mechanized snow blower Forte (Forte), equipped with a steel auger, is sold in a retail network at a price of 900-1000 rubles. For an electrified rotary tool, you will have to pay at least 6,000 rubles.

Budget mechanical snow blower Forte QI-JY-50

A two-wheeled scraper with a steel bucket can be purchased at a price of 4,000 rubles. Four-wheel models of manual scrapers are sold at a price of 6,500 rubles.

Do-it-yourself snow shovel

There is nothing complicated in the design of a snow shovel. Therefore, you can make it yourself at home.

Consider the two most popular options for do-it-yourselfers:

  • plywood shovel;
  • scraper (engine) on wheels.

Having prepared all the materials necessary for work, you can make a snow shovel with your own hands from plywood within 1 hour.

The set of parts for assembly includes:

  • A wooden lath with a section of 30x40 mm (length 1.5 meters) for the manufacture of a handle.
  • Plywood sheet 5 mm thick and 40x40 cm in size.
  • A piece of pine board 3 cm thick and 40 cm long.
  • A strip of galvanized steel 5-6 cm wide.
  • Wood screws 3 cm long for attaching the handle to plywood.
  • Nails 15-20 mm long.

Of the tools you will need an electric plane, a hacksaw, metal shears, pliers, a chisel, a hammer and a screwdriver.

The first operation is the manufacture of the back wall of the bucket from cutting boards. To do this, draw an arc on the workpiece with a pencil. Its height in the center is 10 cm, and at the edges 5 cm.

Having cut out the outlined contour with a planer, they take a hacksaw and make two cuts in the center of the board according to the size of the future cutting. A chisel cuts out a rectangular hole for passing the handle.

The edge of the handle is marked with a pencil and cut with a hacksaw so that it fits snugly against the plywood sheet.

A sheet of plywood is placed on the wall of the bucket and fixed with nails.

The steel strip is cut to the size of the bucket, its edge is bent and screwed to the bottom with screws. Pieces of steel strip are used to strengthen the place where the handle is attached to the plywood sheet and the area where it passes through the back wall of the bucket.

To strengthen the working edge, the strip is bent in half, put on plywood and the edges of the metal are bent. To prevent the strip from jumping off the bucket during operation, it is fixed along the edges with short screws or rivets.

Now consider the manufacture of the second constructive option- a homemade snow shovel on two wheels.

On the Internet you can find a solution, the basis of which is a frame with handles from an old stroller. We think that for a normal scraper, it is too “flimsy”. Therefore, we suggest using a profile pipe 20x40 mm for the manufacture of the frame. It will take a little for our homemade product, only 1.5 meters.

There will be no square frame in our version. It will be replaced by a central tubular rack. A handle is welded to its upper part - a cut water pipe 20 mm in diameter.

Two 8" trolley wheels must be purchased prior to assembly. The dump is made of sheet steel with a thickness of 0.8-1.0 mm. Having drilled holes in two steel flange plates for passing the shaft, they are welded to profile pipe, which performs the function of a cutting.

After that, a short piece of pipe 20x40 mm is welded to the inclined rack for attaching a rotary plate with a blade. Three holes are drilled in the plate and in the pipe on which it will lie: one for the mounting bolt and two for installing the locking rod that fixes the blade.

As an axle for the wheels, you can use any steel tube or fittings suitable diameter. Having passed the axle into the holes of the flanges, it is necessary to weld retaining rings to it, which protect the wheels from displacement.
