David in Psalm 102 compares a person to dust under his feet, and his days are like the days of a wild flower - they are short-lived and full of dangers. As soon as the wind of obstacles blows, a person can break and disappear.

Psalm 102 is a reminder to people that only those who fear the Lord and His judgment, those who realize the greatness and power of the Creator of all life on earth, remember His Commandments and keep His covenants, His help comes. David addresses in Psalm 102 to all the servants of the Lord, angels with mighty strength to bless the Lord and to all the servants of God both in heaven and on earth.

Presumably, it was during the peaceful reign of the king, which fell out extremely rarely, and in his calm state of reflection on the greatness of the Creator. There are a number of songs that have been written with this same thought in mind, which speaks volumes about the length of the peaceful period in Israel. Bless the Lord, all His forces, His servants, who do His will. Bless the Lord, all His works, in every place of His dominion, bless, O my soul. Lord.

This psalm is more for worship than for interpretation. This is the most beautiful psalm of praise for general use. In it, the psalmist (I) encourages himself and his soul to glorify God (vv. 1, 2) for His good will towards him (vv. 3-5), towards the Church and towards all pious people, to whom He was and will be just, kind and unchanging (vv. 6-18), and also for His government of the world (v. 19). He wants the holy angels and all the works of God to help him in his glorification (vv. 20-22). In singing this psalm, we must in a special way fill our hearts with gratitude to God for mercy and love.

Psalm of David.

Verses 1-5. In these verses David converses with his heart; and the man who thus speaks to himself, and stirs his soul to strive for good, is not a fool. Note:

I. How he urges himself to do his duty and glorify God (v. 1, 2).

1. It is God that we must bless and speak well of Him, since He is the source of all blessings, no matter who the channel or container is. We must concentrate our praise on His name, His holy name, glorifying the memory of His holiness.

2. In the blessing of God, our soul and our whole interior must take part. We do nothing with our religious ideas if the heart does not participate in them, if everything that is inside us, moreover, our entire interior does not participate in this. This work requires participation inner man, the whole person - only then will he be accepted.

3. In order to glorify God in return, we must remember with gratitude the mercies received from Him: "... do not forget all His benefits." If we do not give thanks, we forget about them, and this is unfair and impolite, since all God's graces deserve that we remember them. “O my soul! Be ashamed, how could you forget many of His graces; but, of course, you could not forget about all and should not forget any.

II. How he provides himself with numerous themes for praise; it makes a big impression: "Come, my soul, think about what God has done for you."

1. “He has forgiven your sins (v. 3);

He has forgiven and forgives all your iniquity." This is mentioned first, because through the forgiveness of sin, that which kept good things from us is removed, and we are restored to the right to the favor of God, which gives us good things. Think about what provokes God - it's iniquity, but it's forgiven; no matter how many crimes, they are all forgiven. He forgives all your iniquities. This action continues; He continues to forgive as we continue to sin and repent.

2. "He heals all your diseases." The depravity of our nature is a disease of the soul: it brings it into confusion and frightens it with death. This is cured by sanctification; when sin is mortified, then sickness is cured, however severe it may be. Our guilt deserved death, but God, in forgiving it, saves our lives. Our disease was fatal, but God, healing, saves our lives. These truths go hand in hand; God, in doing this work, does it perfectly, and not half; If God removes the guilt of sin by forgiving grace, then by renewing grace He deprives sin of power. Where Christ became righteousness to the soul, He became sanctification (1 Corinthians 1:30).

3. "He delivered you from danger." The danger to human life can be represented not only by his iniquity and disease, but also by the strength of his enemies. Therefore, in this plan too, we experience divine mercy: "He delivers your life from the grave (v. 4), from the destroyer, from destruction (English translation KJV), from hell (Chaldean translation), from the second death." The price of the redemption of their souls is dear. We cannot comprehend it and therefore find ourselves in even greater debt to divine grace who did it, and those who purchased eternal redemption for us (see Job 33:24,28).

4. “He not only saved you from death and destruction, but also made you truly absolutely happy, clothed you in honors, bestowed pleasure and a long life.”

(1.) "He gave you true honor, a great honor, which is no less significant than a crown." He crowns you with mercy and bounties; and what greater honor can be given to a poor soul than the love and favor of God? This honor is for all His saints. What else can be the crown of glory, if not God's favor?

(2) "He gives you true pleasure and satisfies your desire with good things" (v. 5);

only the favor and grace of God can give satisfaction to the soul, give appropriate opportunities, meet its needs and answer its desires. Only divine wisdom can take charge and fill their treasuries, Prov. 8:21. Everything else will satisfy, but will not satisfy (Ecclesiastes 6:7; Isaiah 55:2).

(3) “He gave you a vision and a pledge of long life. Renewed, like an eagle, your youth. The eagle lives a long time, and, as naturalists say, when he is 100 years old, he sheds his old feathers (of course, he changes them every year during the molt) and new ones grow in their place, and thus he becomes young again. When God, by the grace and comforts of His Spirit, heals His people from decay and fills new life and joy, which are for him a pledge eternal life and joy, then he may be said to return to the days of his youth, Job 33:25.

Verses 6-18. Until now, the psalmist has only looked back, turning to his own experience and scooping up topics for praise, but in these verses he looks around and notes His favor also to others, for we should rejoice and thank God for them, since all saints are fed from common table and share the same blessings.

I. Truly God is good to all (v. 6): “The Lord does justice and judgment not only for His people, but also for all those who are offended, for even in His general providences He is the Protector of trampled innocence and in one way or another will intercede for the offended against their oppressors. His honor is to humble the proud and help the helpless.

II. He is especially kind to Israel, to every Israelite who is pure and right in heart.

1. He showed himself and his grace to us (v. 7), showed his ways to Moses, and through him to the children of Israel his works, not only with his rod to those who lived at that time, but also with the help of his writings to subsequent generations . Note, Divine revelation is one of the first and greatest divine favors with which the Church has been blessed, for God sets us in order by revealing Himself, and bestows upon us every good thing by giving knowledge. He showed His ways and His works (i.e., His nature and the ways in which He deals with the sons of men) that they might imagine Him and know what to expect from Him (as Dr. Hammond interprets). Or, by His ways, we may know His principles, the ways that we must walk, and by His works, or plans (which emphasizes the meaning of this word), His promises and purposes regarding us. This is how God treats us.

2. He was never ruthless and cruel to us, but always full of compassion and tenderness, ready to forgive.

(1.) Such is His nature (v. 8): “The Lord is bountiful and merciful; this is how He revealed himself to Moses on Mount Horeb when he proclaimed his name (Ex 34:6,7) in response to Moses' request (Ex 33:13): “My way,” God answers, “is to forgive sin.”

He is not quick to anger (v. 8). He is long-suffering; He does not critically point out what we are doing wrong, and does not use every opportunity to punish. He long suffers those who irritate Him and delays their punishment, giving time to repent; He does not quickly carry out the sentence of the law. Since He is many-merciful, He is long-suffering; He is the Father of mercy.

He is not angry for long, for he is not completely angry (v. 9), even though we offend him often and deserve to be punished. Although God expresses His dissatisfaction with us with reproaches of providence and reproaches of our conscience, which leads to sorrow, but at the same time He has compassion and He will not always surround us with pain and horror for sins, but after the spirit of slavery He will send the spirit of adoption. How different from God are those who are constantly angry, use every opportunity to become angry, and do not know when to stop being angry! What would happen if God treated us the same way? He will not be angry with His people forever, but will soon gather them in eternal mercy (Isaiah 54:8; 8:57:16).

(2.) We have seen that he is such, and for our part we must acknowledge that he did not do it to us according to our iniquities (v. 10). Scripture speaks a lot about the mercy of God, and under this truth we can all seal and confirm that we are convinced of this. If He were not a God of tolerance, then we would have been in hell long ago, but He did not repay us according to our sins; so say all who know what sin deserves. He does not inflict on us the punishment we deserve, he does not deprive us of the comforts with which we are fed up, which make us think worse of sin, not better, since the goodness (tolerance, Engl. per. KJV) of God leads us to repentance (Rom. 2). :four).

3. He forgave our sins, not only my iniquities (v. 3), but our iniquities (v. 12). If we have comfort through the pardoning grace of God, that is our personal privilege; at the same time, we must give him glory for the privileges that others enjoy because of it. Note:

(1) the extraordinary riches of God's mercy (v. 11). As the sky is high above the earth (so high that from there the earth seems to be a point throughout its vast extent), so the mercy of God is above the merits of those who fear Him most, it is so high that it is impossible to find a ratio; even the greatest examples of duty cannot require evidence of God's favor as a duty, and therefore all the seed of Jacob will join in the voice of the psalmist, acknowledging themselves unworthy of all the mercies of God (Gen. 32:10). Note that great is the mercy of the Lord to those who fear Him, and not to those who take Him lightly. We must fear the Lord and His mercy.

(2.) The fullness of his forgiveness, and the evidence of the riches of his mercy (v. 12). As far as the east is from the west (the vast distance occupied by two-quarters of the world, thanks to what is inhabited and studied, can be measured by geographers), just as far has He removed our iniquities from us, and now they will never be presented to us and will not stand on judgment against us. Neither God nor the believers themselves will remember these sins; they will be looked for but not found. If we finally deny them, God will finally forgive them.

4. He sympathizes with our sorrows (v. 13, 14). Note:

(1.) To whom He sympathizes—those who fear Him, that is, to all good people who in this world can become an object of compassion because of the sorrows for which they are not only born, but also born again. Or these words can be attributed to those who have not yet received the spirit of adoption and tremble at His word. Such He has mercy (Jer 31:18,20).

(2.) How he has mercy on them—as a father has mercy on his sons and does good to them whenever he can. God is the Father of those who fear Him, and treats them as His children; He is gentle with them, like a father. The father takes pity on the children who do not have enough knowledge and instructs them. He pities them when they feel bad, and is patient with them; takes pity on them when they are sick and comforts them (Isaiah 66:13);

takes pity when they fall and helps them up; pities when they are offended, and, seeing their humility, forgives them; regrets when they are offended, and compensates for their losses. This is how the Lord has mercy on those who fear Him.

(3) Why does He pity - for He knows our composition. He has reason to know our composition, since He formed us, and having created man from dust, He remembers that we are dust not only in our composition, but also according to the sentence: “You are dust.” He thinks about the perishability of human bodies and the recklessness of our souls - about how little we can do, and does not expect more, how little we can bear, and accordingly imposes little on us. All this shows the tenderness of His mercy.

5. He perpetuated His covenant of mercy, and in so doing provided relief for our corruption (vv. 15-18). Notice here, (1.) How short human life is, and how doubtful its duration. Such is the life of even the greatest and best husbands, and neither their greatness nor their piety can change their peculiarity: the days of a person are like grass that grows out of the earth, but grows only a little, dries up and returns to it again (see Isaiah 40:6,7). A man in his best position seems to be greater than grass; it flourishes and looks careless, but at the same time it is the color of the field, which, although slightly different from the grass, will still dry up with it. Garden flowers are most often chosen from many and are more valued, and although by their nature they also dry out, but their life, thanks to the care of the gardener and shelter in the garden, lasts longer. BUT wild flower, with which life is compared here, not only dries up on its own, but is also subject to cold winds; he is not protected from the mouth of the wild beasts, nor from trampling. Man's life is not only exhausted by itself, but this period can be subject to a thousand accidents. When a blossoming flower is in its beauty, the invisible strong wind, which no one expected, will pass over him, and he is gone. The flower hangs on the stem, the leaves fall, and it returns to the ground again. And his place (which was proud of him) will no longer recognize him. Such is the man. God knows about this and pities the man, and let the man himself think about it and humble himself, let him become dead to this world and think about something else.

(2.) How enduring is the mercy of God to his people (v. 17, 18): it will outlive their lives and outlive their present condition. Notice the description of those to whom this grace belongs. These are those who fear God and by their principle are truly religious people. First, they live by faith, as they keep the covenant of God. They hold fast to this covenant and will not let it go. They keep it as wealth, as their part, and they will not part with it for any treasures in the world, since this is their life. Secondly, Their life is a life of obedience, and they remember His commandments to keep them; otherwise they will not keep their covenant with God. Only those who responsibly keep His commandments will receive the privileges of God's promises. See who has a good memory and a faithful mind (Ps 110:10), who does His commandments; not only speaks of them, but also fulfills them and is guided by them.

To the long-term mercy that belongs to such people. It will last longer than their life on earth, and therefore they do not need to worry about the shortness of their life, since death will not be a limitation or an encroachment on their bliss. The grace of God is better than life, because it will outlive it. First, in relation to their eternal souls. In relation to them, the mercy of the Lord from age to age: from its eternal decrees - to its eternal consequences, from their election until the creation of the world - until their glorification, when this world will no longer be, since they are destined for inheritance (Eph 1 :11), waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. Secondly, in relation to their descendants (Ps. 103:18), who will be kept until the end of time, and His righteousness (the righteousness of His promises) upon the sons of sons. If they walk in the ways of the piety of their predecessors and keep His covenant, as they did, then mercy for them will be preserved for a thousand generations.

Verses 19-22. In these verses (I) the doctrine of universal providence is set forth (v. 19). God preserves the happiness of his chosen people by promise and covenant, and the general course of mankind and the world in general by a common providence. God has his own throne - a throne of glory and leadership. He issued all the rules with the word of His power and set His throne in heaven. The Lord established and strengthened him so that he would not stagger. All the means of His government He determined and administered according to His will. His throne is in heaven, above us and out of sight, because he spread his cloud over it (Job 26:9). But at the same time, he himself can judge through the darkness (Job 22:13) by virtue of his heavenly authority (Dan. 4:23), and this prompts us to think about it because of the influence that even the visible heavens have on the earth with their ordinances of heaven (Job 38:33; Gen 1:16). But although the throne of God is in heaven, there He maintains His court and there we must direct our appeals (Our Father who art in heaven ...), at the same time, His kingdom possesses everything. The Lord knows about all the inhabitants of the earth, the affairs of this lower world, and distributes everything in accordance with His will for His glory (Dan. 4:32) - His kingdom possesses everything, rules over kings and kingdoms, and nothing escapes His jurisdiction.

II. From there, a decree was issued on the universal glorification of God, since everyone is in His power and must honor Him.

1. Let the holy angels glorify Him (v. 20, 21): "Bless the Lord, O His angels"; and again: "Bless the Lord, all his armies, his servants." David encourages himself and others to glorify God, and in these verses, in conclusion, he calls the angels to this. This does not mean that they needed any prompting from us to glorify God, for they do so all the time; thus the psalmist expresses his lofty thoughts about God as about an object worthy of the admiration of the holy angels, prompting himself and others to this duty. He calls to think about the fact that this is the work of an angel (thus he consoles himself, realizing his own weakness and imperfection in the performance of this duty), that there is a world of holy angels who are in the house of God and glorify Him. Or briefly: blessed angels are glorified visitors to a blessed God. Note:

(1.) How they are perfectly suited to their position. They are able to carry out this service, because they are strong in strength; they are mighty in strength (literally);

they can do great things and do their work without wearying. And they are equally willing and able to do this work, obeying the voice of His word. They stand, waiting for instructions and instructions from their great Lord, and always see the face of the Heavenly Father (Mt. 18:10) in order to catch the slightest hints of His mind. They are willing to do this work: “They do his word (v. 20);

they do his will (v. 21);

they do not discuss His divine commands, but go forth willingly to carry them out.” They do not delay execution, but are swift in their actions. They fulfill his word, obeying the voice of his word, or (as place dr Hammond) - as soon as they hear the voice of His word. Obedience is better than sacrifice, for angels obey but do not offer sacrifice.

(2.) What is their ministry. They are His angels and His servants, since He created them and created for Himself, since He gives them work, although He does not need them, since He is their Owner and Lord. They belong to Him and are at His disposal. All creatures are His servants, but not to the extent that angels visit the presence of His glory. Soldiers, sailors, all good subjects serve their king, but not to the same extent as courtiers, state servants and family members.

They serve God from time to time in this lower world, do His word and His commissions (Dan. 9:21), fight His battles (2 Kings 6:17), and serve for the good of His people (Heb. 1:14).

They constantly praise Him in the world above; they began to do it in time (Job 38:7), and still carry on this service, from which they have no rest day or night (Rev. 4:8). Thank God that He has such admirers, but even more glory to Him, since He does not need them and does not benefit from them.

2. Let all his works glorify him (v. 22) in all the places of his dominion, for they are his works and subject to him—were created for his name and glory. All His works, that is, all the sons of men in all corners of the earth, let us glorify God! Moreover, all the lower creatures, who are also the works of God, glorify Him to the best of your ability, if you cannot actually glorify Him (Ps. 145:10). But all this does not give David the right not to participate in the praise, but rather encourages him to give glory to God with more joy, to be a part of this choir, for he ends the psalm in the same way as he began: "Bless the Lord, my soul!" (Art. 1). Blessing God and praising Him should be the alpha and omega of all our ministries. He began the psalm with the words: “Bless the Lord, my soul!”, and after he wrote and sang this excellent psalm, he did not say: “Now, my soul, when you have blessed the Lord, sit down and calm down.” No, David says, "Bless, my soul, the Lord again and again!" Even when we serve the Lord very much, we must further encourage ourselves to serve. The glory of God is a topic that will never run out, and therefore we should not consider it complete until we get to heaven where we will be doing it forever.
