How to make a sliding table for cutting fabric. We make a table for a sewing machine with our own hands. Cutting table in a workshop or sewing workshop

The cutting table is one of the most important items in a sewing workshop or atelier. The quality of the sewn product directly depends on whether the drawing was clearly executed and whether the pattern was cut correctly. Therefore, even at home, seamstresses try to find a place not only for a machine or overlock, but also for a cutting surface. They are built into special cabinets or tables designed to equip a sewing place.

For ateliers or workshops, specialized cutters' tables are available, equipped with devices for laying and fixing fabric.

Sewing equipment for workshops and work at home

Sewing equipment is not only a machine that sews stitches on fabric. In order to sew clothes, many devices are required to facilitate the work of a seamstress. Even at home, a regularly sewing craftswoman needs to properly organize the storage of threads and tools, lay out drawings and fabrics when cutting, install an overlock or embroidery device in addition to the sewing machine. In the conditions of a workshop or atelier, when sewing a large number of clothes, the list of equipment needed for work expands significantly.

What equipment is needed for a sewing workshop or sewing at home is shown in the table below

Cutting table in a workshop or sewing workshop

A cutting table is one of the main places of work in a cutting room or in a sewing workshop, atelier. In a small sewing industry, especially if it is located in a rented room, cutting is often done on simple stationery tables. Sometimes they order simple folding structures with a surface made of wood or chipboard, covered with laminate or linoleum. For the cutting shop, specialized stationary structures are used - wide, long, durable, with additional equipment for laying fabrics and cutting them.

A feature of the cutting table for sewing production is the increased strength of the frame. Its profile is made of high-strength metal to withstand the weight of any fabrics in several additions. Experts recommend choosing a table width of at least 180 cm, since this is approximately the typical width of a fabric roll. When sewing sheets and other bedding, you will need a cutting surface about 2 meters wide. The length of the equipment when ordering at a furniture company is usually calculated in linear meters, since it depends on the size of the room. But the table should not be shorter than 3 meters in order to comfortably work with drawings and patterns.

The table cover is made of laminated chipboard, but there is also a special wear-resistant coating such as artificial stone.

Cutting tables, types

Standard cutting table. Typical tables for cutting are made on the basis of metal structures with a polymer coating, which can withstand a load of up to 300 kg. The tabletop is made of chipboard, the edges are covered with aluminum strips and corners so that the fabric does not cling to the edges.

The width of the table is usually 150 cm, the length is about 2 meters, the height is from 80 to 90 cm. Manufacturers provide the ability to adjust the table legs in height, taking into account the unevenness of the floor. Under the tabletop, shelves are provided for storing fabrics and sewing blanks.

Folding cutting table. Folding table models for cutting fabric are used at home. Usually a book table or a corner table with drop-down tops is chosen. Many furniture manufacturers make such tables with built-in shelves and drawers. There you can put the machine away when you finish sewing. It is convenient to store threads, tools, etc. in them. If necessary, the tabletop rises and the fabric is laid out on it for cutting.

The advantage of a folding table is its compactness. If a craftswoman sews from time to time, this is the best solution for organizing a workplace. With regular sewing and the need to cut a lot, such a table may not withstand the loads. It will have to be replaced by a more durable stationary model.

Folding models of tables are also used in sewing studios, if they are located in rented premises. They are ordered in furniture workshops according to the parameters of the room.

The cutting table with a rail for the spreading carriage is intended for studios and is used with additional equipment - the spreading carriage. This is a device for spreading fabric from a roll or pack on a table. It evenly and quickly lays out the material on the surface of the table, adjusts its tension from the roll.

A guide rail is placed along the table along its entire length, along which it is convenient to move the carriage in the desired direction. The tabletop is made of laminated chipboard, the table itself is adjustable in height depending on the unevenness of the floor.

Vacuum cutting table. The essence of his work is that the fabric on it is tightly fixed and does not move during the cutting process. The tabletop has a mesh structure made of high strength material with a seal on the surface and a thin hose connected to create a vacuum. Advantages of the table when cutting:

  • quickly and tightly fixes the workpiece from the fabric;
  • evenly straightens and presses the material;
  • saves time when cutting.

The quality of the cut parts is high, this is especially important when cutting small items from thin sliding fabrics.

Other types. A needle cutting table for fabric is used when cutting fabrics in a cage or strip, when a deviation from the shared direction cannot be allowed. The table has a perforated surface with holes for needles. The fabric is laid on the surface and fixed with needles that pierce the fabric. If necessary, several sheets can be laid at the same time and fixed with needles for easy cutting.

A conveyor table is used for laser cutting of fabric. It looks like a mesh tape woven from stainless wire. The belt is moved by a mechanism similar to tractor tracks. The width of the working part of the table must be at least 1600 mm, since standard fabric rolls usually have exactly these parameters.

When cutting with a laser, honeycomb tables are used. It is a honeycomb structure made of thin galvanized metal, mounted on a rigid steel frame. Such a surface does not allow the fabric to sag under its own weight, which is important when cutting small parts. The table is convenient for cutting both thin fabrics such as organza or chiffon, and thick ones like acrylic.

cutting complex

In sewing shops, when producing large batches of clothes, cutting machines are used. The composition of such a complex includes a working surface with a belt conveyor, which supplies fabric for cutting. The receiving area where the cutting takes place is equipped with a vacuum device, which, if necessary, fixes thin fabric for easy cutting or compresses several layers of laying material before cutting.

The cut is made with special self-sharpening knives of various configurations, the holes are cut with a thermal drill. The complex is controlled using computer programs that set the task for the complex - what parts to cut and with what knives. The program is set by the operator who controls the cutting complex from the platform.

Cutting tables: manufacturers and models

Among the suppliers of sewing equipment for ateliers and workshops, SewTech is a popular company. This is the official dealer of the world's most popular brands - Juki, Hoffman, Oshima. The cutting tables presented by this company from the Polish manufacturer REXEL are in great demand. They have a modular design, which makes it easy to disassemble the tables if necessary. Model SK-3 is made of steel profiles, with a width of 180 cm and a length of about 2 meters. The required number of modules is attached to the main tabletop, each of which extends the table by about a meter.

For household sewing, furniture complexes from the Comfort company are popular. It specializes in the production of household sewing equipment, which helps to organize the seamstress's workplace. It folds compactly, is easy to move and can fit comfortably in the room. For example, the Comfort 1QL+ table is equipped not only with a place to install a machine and an overlocker, but also with a cutting surface.

Sewing place from the closet

A cutting table built into the closet will significantly save space in the room, since it is convenient to remove it after work is completed. Such transformer cabinets are specially created by furniture manufacturers - for example, the Comfort company, for the optimal organization of the seamstress's place. Its advantages:

  • sewing devices, cutting surfaces are easily extended and retracted inside;
  • there is a place for fabrics, spools of thread, skeins of yarn, tools and other things needed in the sewing process;
  • the working area is highlighted;
  • the sewing place easily unfolds into a convenient office and folds compactly;
  • cabinets are made with special wheels for ease of movement.

An important factor in the advantage of a folding sewing place from the closet is that it can be closed securely and not worry that children will accidentally grab sharp dangerous objects.

Do-it-yourself table for a sewing machine - is it real

In order to save a little when opening a sewing workshop or atelier, they make a table for cutting and sewing with their own hands. The simplest version of the cutting table is several conventional stationery tables standing side by side and butt-joined. There is no need to close up the joints, they do not interfere with the work with the fabric.

Another option for the manual manufacture of sewing equipment is to put any two non-new (used) tables side by side and cover with a chipboard sheet measuring 250 by 150 cm. Such sheets are sold in any building materials store in Moscow.

Important! The edges of the laminated sheet must be beaten or glued with thin strips so that the fabric does not cling to the sawn edges.

It is advisable to choose a chipboard sheet laminated or coated with plastic. If the surface is not laminated, you can putty it well and cover it with a self-adhesive film.

A table for cutting fabric is chosen in specialized stores that sell sewing equipment. For an atelier or workshop, a table is often ordered at a furniture company for the size that best fits into the room.

When choosing, the width of the countertop is important. It is calculated according to the width of the fabric and should be at least one and a half meters. The length is chosen as maximum, but so that it works comfortably around the table. The height of the tables is usually standard - about 80 cm.

The space under the table remains large and needs to be used wisely. The best option is to make a table with several compartments of shelves at the bottom. They are always needed when working with fabrics and during cutting.

Nowadays, sewing can be seen not only as the art of creating clothes, interior items and accessories, but also as a way to turn a hobby into a business project. Custom made items are more valuable than factory stamped ones. Of course, every craftswoman dreams of a perfectly organized workplace that will simplify the creative process and get rid of unnecessary inconvenience. A sewing table is a necessary attribute for tailoring, but is it worth spending money on buying a ready-made cabinet when you can make a table with your own hands?

Every craftswoman dreams of a perfectly organized workplace that will simplify the creative process and get rid of unnecessary inconvenience.

Proceed with assembling the body of the pedestal: connect the countertop, sidewalls and support strips with self-tapping screws.

There are many options on the market for work tables designed specifically for tailors, but the cost of acquiring new furniture does not always justify its cost. And if sewing new clothes requires a high level of skill and practical experience, then making a table for a sewing machine does not require special talent. If you know how to handle a tape measure, a screwdriver and a jigsaw, this is an occasion to think and make a sewing table with your own hands.

A sewing table is a necessary attribute for tailoring.

Many may have a question: why waste time making a sewing table with your own hands, when you can just buy a ready-made one? If you make a simple calculation, it turns out that most of the cost of the product is the cost of labor of a stranger and the rental of commercial premises. From this follows the main advantage - saving the family budget. The costs will go only to materials and accessories, which is 3-4 times cheaper than buying a finished table. With the money saved, you can take training courses in creative skills, which will be a profitable investment.

There are many types of work tables on the market designed specifically for tailors.

When installing the tabletop, make sure that the fastening is carried out exactly according to the marks corresponding to the drawing.

A handmade sewing table becomes not only a unique thing, but also a reliable assistant in the creative process. How much should fit in this small bedside table: sewing supplies, sets of threads of different colors and thicknesses for each type of fabric, cutting tools, ribbons, appliqués and other accessories. At the same time, the size, color, material, design of the table top and body will be recreated at the request of the owner himself. Whether the table will be a strict workplace or a real art object is up to you.

If you know how to handle a tape measure, a screwdriver and a jigsaw, this is an occasion to think and make a sewing table with your own hands.

The modern market is full of chipboard furniture, but not everyone is eager to use furniture made from sawdust. When making furniture with your own hands, you can choose environmentally friendly materials. The price of the issue is also beyond doubt: the cost of a pine furniture board will not exceed the cost of a finished table with a folding tabletop. Lacquered wooden furniture does not emit toxic substances and fills the room with a delicate aroma of coniferous forest. In addition, natural materials are durable, strong fasteners and the possibility of restoration.

The main advantage follows - saving the family budget.

Lacquer the finished product and components.

Deciding on design and construction

Depending on the size of the room, the dimensions of the sewing equipment and the availability of additional sewing tools, the following models of sewing tables are distinguished:

Cabinet with sections for storage. The model is easy to manufacture, but has a small countertop area. Suitable for hobby craftsmen.

The costs will go only to materials and accessories, which is 3-4 times cheaper than buying a finished table.

Table-book with a compartment for a sewing machine and accessories storage. Differs in spaciousness and versatility. Suitable for small spaces.

Drawers allow you to store precious boxes and accessories, and in a compact state, the table does not take up much space.

Assemble drawers.

Table with drawers and folding top. A great option that will suit you for professional use. In addition to the sewing machine, you can put an overlock on the table at the same time without losing convenience.

A handmade sewing table becomes not only a unique thing, but also a reliable assistant in the creative process.

Corner table-transformer. Making such a model at home requires a lot of time and professional experience, so not everyone can handle this task. When unfolded, the transforming table takes up a lot of space and is inconvenient in small apartments.

When unfolded, the transforming table takes up a lot of space and is inconvenient in small apartments.

Lastly, attach the doors and handles, insert the assembled drawers.

When Material Matters

The issue of choosing a material should be taken with special care: the practical and aesthetic properties of the finished product depend on it. The comparison table shows the key characteristics of various materials.

Name Environmental properties moisture resistance Durability
Chipboard Releases formaldehyde as it contains refined petroleum products low In such materials, screws and nails tend to loosen, fasteners gradually lose strength
Laminated chipboard Does not emit harmful substances due to the coating
MDF Environmentally friendly increased
Plywood 100% natural material High when coated with polyurethane varnish They retain the strength of fasteners, do not rot when coated with protective compounds, and have a long service life
solid wood

Whether the table will be a strict workplace or a real art object is up to you.

Thus, financial investments in furniture made of natural wood and plywood are suitable for a person who focuses on the safety, environmental friendliness and durability of furniture. Investments in natural material are always justified: such a sewing table will please its owner with the beauty of natural texture and smell, wear resistance and will last more than one generation. If the expense item does not provide for high costs, then from the budget options you can choose laminated chipboard or MDF, they are more advanced and safer materials.

The modern market is full of chipboard furniture, but not everyone is eager to use furniture made from sawdust.

The reliability of furniture assembly is determined by high-quality fittings. For a simple folding table with drawers, a shelf for a sewing machine and additional compartments, you will need: butterfly loops, self-tapping screws, ball guides, base mounts, height-adjustable legs, handles if there are doors or for ease of unfolding countertops. The latter can be made in a certain style and perform a decorative function.

In addition, natural materials are durable, strong fasteners and the possibility of restoration.

Armed with instructions, tools and a good attitude, you can independently assemble a table that meets all the requirements of a sewing master.

Step-by-step instruction

Before you get started, you need to make sure you have the following tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • jigsaw;
  • Screwdriver Set;
  • sandpaper;
  • polyurethane varnish for wood;
  • brush or roller;
  • edge tape (for chipboard, MDF);
  • building level;
  • construction pencil.

Investing in natural material is always justified.

Step 1. At the first stage, you need to select a drawing of a cabinet for a sewing machine and cut out all the details on paper, indicating the dimensions. With the finished drawing, you should go to the building materials store. To make a folding table with drawers, one sheet of chipboard, MDF or plywood will suffice.

The reliability of furniture assembly is determined by high-quality fittings.

Step 2. Then you need to mark the details on the shield with a construction pencil, taking into account the edge and cut it out with a jigsaw; mark and make holes for fasteners. If natural wood is used, the surface of the parts must be sanded. Paste over chipboard and MDF with edging tape. In order not to cut out the parts yourself, you can order cutting and edging according to the drawing and immediately proceed to the assembly stage.

The latter can be made in a certain style and perform a decorative function.

Step 3. Proceed with assembling the cabinet body: connect the table top, sidewalls and support strips with self-tapping screws. Attach the back wall with a hammer and nails, making sure that the edges of the wall do not protrude from the sides. Using self-tapping screws, attach the legs to the cabinet, check the result with a building level. If there are deviations from the horizon - correct. When installing the tabletop, make sure that the fastening is carried out exactly according to the marks corresponding to the drawing.

At the first stage, you need to select a drawing of a cabinet for a sewing machine and cut out all the details on paper with an indication of the dimensions.

Step 4 Varnish the finished product and components. Cleaning the countertop should be treated with special care, as it will become the main working surface. If the coating will be varnished in several layers, it is necessary to withstand the time between applications. The varnish will dry completely in 36 hours.

To make a folding table with drawers, one sheet of chipboard, MDF or plywood will suffice.

Step 5. Assemble the drawers. After varnishing, attach ball guides. Check whether the drawers fit into the mounts evenly by setting the construction level on the bottom of the drawer.

If natural wood is used, the surface of the parts must be sanded. Paste over chipboard and MDF with edging tape.

Step 6 Lastly, attach the doors and handles, insert the assembled drawers.

A table for a sewing machine is an indispensable tool in the process of translating creative ideas, but it is not always possible to find an option that suits you in furniture stores. Armed with instructions, tools and a good attitude, you can independently assemble a table that meets all the requirements of a sewing master.

VIDEO: Cabinet for a sewing machine

Hello, friends!

I have been planning this post for a long time. Finally got there!

Everyone who loves to sew knows the importance of such a thing as cutting table for sewing.

A special dream of a tailor “at home” is that the table takes up little space!

Of course, there are transforming tables on sale that fold conveniently and compactly ... But, as a rule, such furniture has:

  • high price,
  • it may not suit your interior at all
  • and to be honest, I don’t really want to lay out and fold the table every time, especially if you need to sew / hem something quickly.

In conditions of not very large areas of many apartments, a universal solution is needed.

I, like many of my colleagues in love with sewing, have long been thinking about how to make a transforming cutting table for sewing.

There were many options - a folding table-cabinet, a table-wardrobe, etc.

I forgot to say, even before the creation of the blog “!” I had an idea to make furniture with my own hands. I was lucky, though - my husband has “golden hands”.

We have such a division of labor - I come up with a thing (after persuading my husband to another idea), make a sketch, calculate, order sawing, search for accessories, and my husband brings and collects everything.

Thus, we have already created a computer table, a hallway and a kitchen area.

And, here is another cutting table-transformer.

We did not learn this right away, until we spoiled a single thing. Only once, the box was dropped, but they redid it, fortunately, they knew how. By the way, if you are interested, it all started with information on the Internet.

Then, in my opinion, in 2009 there was very little quality material on this topic, but I found this guy’s website and even bought a course from him (this was my first purchase via the Internet).

Distracted ... from the table.

So, thinking over the options, I settled on a functional and “light” one - the table should easily move apart, not clutter up the area, fit the interior and be always “at hand”.

That is, if you suddenly freed up time or suddenly wanted to sew / needlework, you could immediately do it.

A favorite alteration came to the rescue!

We had an old computer desk that we remodeled.

Here's one. (By the way, I also redid the chair in the photo - I painted it and tightened the seat ...)

Unusual table legs on rollers were used.

First, a small drawing with dimensions:

Then the calculations, for those who are interested, I give the numbers:

  • The upper part of the table is the main one - 1600mm x 580mm - 1 piece
  • Upper part of the table second - 1600mm x 250mm - 1 piece
  • The bottom of the table - 1600mm x 480mm - 1 piece
  • Racks - 432 mm x 100 mm - 4 parts
  • Lower support - 1400 mm x 200 mm - 1 piece
  • Drawer bottom - 367 mm x 440 mm - 2 children.
  • The back wall of the box - 367 mm x 60 mm - 2 children
  • Facade - 393 mm x 96 mm - 2 children.

Accessories:

  • Piano hinge - 2 pcs.
  • Gas gap - 2 pcs.
  • Magnets - 2 pcs
  • Rollers - 4 pcs
  • Guides for drawers - 2 pcs.
  • Self-tapping screws - packaging
  • Confirmants (screws are so special) - it seems like 10 pieces
  • Corners - 10 pcs

They sawed, made edges on the parts, bought fittings, took the parts and ...

... We went on vacation, after which it turned out that we did not take the small details of the boxes - facades, walls, etc.

It's been a month since the sawing, the details did not look.

We got out of the situation by making one big facade - the lid. It snaps on magnets.

We proceeded from the remaining material, so it turned out like this.

Of course, it would be more beautiful with drawers, but I really wanted a table, and my husband had so little time to assemble that they did without them.

In general, it is also convenient, the lid leans back, three compartments open at once.

To store everything, everything, I used the leftover pizza boxes. I glued them with a self-adhesive film, and they remarkably “fit” into the niches in size - again Alteration!

Sometimes, to hide the coil or scissors, you don’t even need to open the lid.

When assembled, the table rolls up under the windowsill and looks out about 45 cm. - compact.

In disassembled - due to the gas gap and the system that the husband came up with from a chain, a hook and some two parts, the table moves apart up to 80 cm.

That is, I have a working surface of 160 cm by 80 cm - quite enough for cutting.

The legs and rollers were painted in a suitable color with spray paint.

By the way, the chair was also remade - from an old office chair. They removed the back, painted the leg, fitted the seat and a suitable, rotating and moving chair is ready.

I keep a sewing machine and all sorts of needlework differences in a closet, next to it. It seems to me that it is more convenient than in a table - cabinet. Now I'm also planning to equip a closet so that everything is at hand. I'll do it - I'll tell you.

This is how you can make a transforming cutting table with your own hands.

Take a closer look at your old things - maybe they can also be turned into something useful?

Good luck, Elena Krasovskaya!

The cutting table is the most important inventory, or rather, even a tool for any atelier, sewing workshop. That is why it is important when choosing a room for a studio, first of all, to take into account the possibility of placing a spacious cutting table and good natural lighting on its surface. Of course, you can "huddle" on the office desk, but take the word of a specialist, a spacious and comfortable table for cutting fabric creates not only convenience, but also affects the quality of work and, in general, the mood of workers.

How to choose a table, what dimensions it should have and whether it can be made by hand.

1. Cutting table can be customized

The easiest way to get a professional and convenient cutting table is to buy it in a sewing equipment store or order it in a small furniture company. When choosing this option, choose a table so that, in addition to a large tabletop, it has several compartments of the lower shelves. There are never extra shelves in the studio, and not using such a space of a rented room is simply wasteful.

As for the size of the table, first of all, its width is important. It must be at least 150 cm, under the width of the fabric. The longer the table, the better, but within reasonable limits and taking into account the size of the room. The height of all tables is standard, approximately 75-80 cm.

2. How to make a table yourself

Since this article is intended for those who decide to open a tailoring, clothing repair studio, then its entire focus will be on helping you acquire a cutting table without spending large sums on buying it or ordering it in a furniture workshop. A ready-made factory table or made to order will cost at least 10 thousand. Can you still save money?
Of course you can. The simplest solution is to connect two or three stationery tables together. You don’t even need to seal the joints between them, they will not interfere with work.

Another option. On two tables (used) lay a sheet of chipboard on top, preferably laminated, covered with plastic or film. You can buy it at any building materials store. Only in this case, it will be necessary to close the edges with slats, otherwise the fabric will cling to the cut sections.
You can buy non-laminated chipboard, a sheet of such material is quite inexpensive, and its size is 150 by 250 cm. It is quite enough for a good cutting table. Then the work surface is well puttied and pasted over with a self-adhesive light film.

Or here is such an "exotic" option in the form of sports equipment - a table for a tennis needle. Surely, such a broken and decommissioned table can be found in any high school.

For those who sew at home, a cutting table is also needed. But given the dimensions of the apartment, it should be foldable, like in this photo.

Although there are many solutions for folding tables, and in any furniture store you can buy an inexpensive and convenient such a table.

It is not worth acquiring a separate table with a large non-folding tabletop at home. If you rarely sew, then a smooth and even floor may well help you out. But households will quickly choose such a table and fill up with different things.
It is much more convenient to use such a universal sewing table. You can install a machine on it and use it for cutting at the same time. And there will be enough capacious drawers to put all your sewing accessories there.

Which table to choose for a sewing machine. Is it possible to make a sewing table with your own hands.

What is the difference between a round knife for cutting fabric and tailor's scissors. How to use the OLFA circular knives, sharpen the blade, etc.

Sharpening scissors, especially those used by hairdressers and tailors, should be done on a special machine and always by an experienced craftsman. But often there is a need to urgently sharpen scissors at home, without wasting time going to the workshop. Can you sharpen scissors yourself?

If the purpose of cutting tailor's scissors is clear, then what are zigzag curly scissors for, especially if there is an overlock and do you need to buy them at all? It is these questions that the studio technologist will try to answer.
