On the night of September 28, 1994, the sea passenger ferry "Estonia" sank in the Baltic Sea with 1,049 people on board. Only 137 managed to escape. The Swedes died most of all - about five hundred souls, but among the drowned were also Estonians, Finns, Norwegians, Russians, Germans and others.

The Baltic is not an ocean, but this catastrophe showed that even such powerful ships as "Estonia" are not insured against disaster here. Masses of water entered the hull through two large holes below the waterline, formed as a result of the explosions. The 13-member commission concluded that the explosion may have been linked to an illegal trade in Russian-made weapons. Unidentified persons set explosive devices to prevent the delivery of the next batch of weapons to the destination. One of the members of the commission, Captain Werner Hummel from Hamburg, said that in the video footage filmed by the divers, two non-detonated explosive devices were clearly visible.

According to the results of an examination carried out by the Swedes in the summer of 1999, the ferry “Estonia”, having left the port of Stockholm for the last time, did not fully comply with international rules of navigation. The ferry should have been prevented from going out to sea. But the check was carried out at a time when most of the passengers and vehicles were already on board.
