Summer house from window frames and doors. Do-it-yourself gazebo: how to make inexpensively out of old windows. Video: simple gazebos

September 17, 2016
Specialization: Master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing works and laying floor coverings. Installation of door and window blocks, decoration of facades, installation of electrical, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

If you have a gazebo on your site, then the issue of protecting the space from adverse weather influences and wind requires the utmost attention. In this review, I will talk about several options for solving the problem, they are very different in design, cost, and protective characteristics. You need to decide which solution will be optimal: either sliding windows for a gazebo, or fixed glazing, or simpler and cheaper soft PVC materials.

Overview of the main solutions

I will tell you about several options, and they will be considered from simple to more complex and expensive. You need to familiarize yourself with all and choose the one that will satisfy all your requirements and will not be too expensive financially. Of course, the appearance will also differ, so the aesthetic side of the issue should not be overlooked either.

Option number 1 - constructions from old windows

A do-it-yourself gazebo made of window frames that were previously used is the cheapest solution, since the basic elements can be found almost free of charge or for minimal money. The most important thing here is to find a sufficient number of frames., and if you succeeded, then this section will tell you how to build a place for summer holidays out of them.

If almost all other options require a ready-made gazebo, then in this case it can be quickly built from scratch.

For the construction you will need the following materials:

Materials (edit) Appointment
Old windows It is best that they are of the same size, this will greatly simplify the workflow and improve the appearance of the final result. Products should be quite durable, it is better not to take rotten frames, as they will not serve you for a long time
Wooden block With its help, the frame of the structure will be built, as well as the connection of all elements to each other will be made. The minimum section is 50x50 or more - it is important that the elements can withstand high loads and ensure the reliability of the future structure
Concrete blocks They will serve as the base of the gazebo, a bar will be located on them, which will exclude its contact with the ground and extend the service life of the entire structure. The number of elements is calculated individually in each specific case, the size of the structure is taken into account here
Board It is needed for the construction of the floor and can also be used to sew up the bottom, although window frames can be used from bottom to top.
Fasteners To connect all the elements into a single whole, self-tapping screws and perforated corners with stiffeners are used. These modern solutions are much more reliable than conventional nails, in addition, their application speeds up the construction process.
Dye Since the work will use old frames and an untreated wooden block, it is imperative to paint all surfaces to protect against weathering.

Also, you cannot do without a certain set of tools:

  • A hand saw for cutting a bar and a board or a power tool for the same purpose;

  • Screwdriver with a set of bits for used screws;
  • Roulette and square for marking. The level will help to align the structure.

As for the workflow, it consists of several stages:

  • First, a place for construction is cleared, the site is cleared of debris and leveled. The base must be strong so that later individual parts of the structure do not sag;
  • Then concrete blocks are laid out, usually they are located in the corners and in the middle of the walls. To keep the elements in place, they can be slightly deepened into the ground;
  • The surface of the blocks is covered with roofing material, after which it is assembled - its lower part and vertical corner posts, the position of which is fixed using braces. All elements are fastened using reinforced perforated corners and self-tapping screws, this is both reliable and fast;

  • Next, window frames are placed and fixed, they are fixed to the timber from above and below, if the sizes of the elements are different, then the resulting voids are closed with a board or other improvised material - for example, plywood. Another beam is placed on top, after which the structure is reinforced with jumpers. If there are gaps between the frames, then it is easiest to fill them with polyurethane foam and close them with slats;

  • As for the roof, it can be of a wide variety of designs, from the simplest single-slope version and slate to gable systems or a semicircular roof made of metal pipes and polycarbonate. The latter option is more difficult to implement, but you will get an original and, importantly, light-transmitting roof;

  • Last but not least, the structure is painted in a certain color - the structure of multi-colored parts does not look very good. If your gazebo is assembled entirely from windows, then the lower part of the glazing can also be painted over.

Such a structure will cost you a couple of thousand rubles, or even cheaper, because you can adapt the materials that are at hand. Naturally, it is better to glaze the gazebo from old window frames before assembling it, I advise you to remove all the glasses, then put them on silicone and secure with new glazing beads.

The frames can be quickly and reliably fastened to each other using perforated plates, this is especially convenient if you need to additionally strengthen the structure, the bar from above and below may not be enough.

Option number 2 - soft windows

This type of product is also called "flexible windows" and has the following features:

  • The openings are closed with elastic PVC material, which, if necessary, can be quickly removed to admire the beauty of nature;
  • The light transmittance of the structure is 90%, which is quite enough to ensure high-quality natural lighting;

  • The service life of the material is about 10 years, which is also important;
  • The price of the material is 1500-1800 rubles per square meter, it is much cheaper than other ready-made options;
  • You can also order a door made of this material, which closes with a zipper and provides excellent protection against mosquitoes and other insects.

Here, naturally, you should already have a ready-made gazebo. To close it with flexible windows, you need to follow a few simple steps:

  • First, you need to measure the openings in order to determine the dimensions of future elements. They should go to the surface of the gazebo, because fasteners will be placed there;
  • Next, soft PVC windows of the required configuration are ordered, the manufacturer will tell you all the nuances, you only need the exact dimensions;
  • Fixing the windows is very simple: special metal elements are fixed on the canvases, which are inserted into the lugs and fixed with a strap. The eyelet is attached to the base using self-tapping screws or dowels - it all depends on what your gazebo is made of. The work can be done on your own, it is not difficult, and the savings will be about 15,000 rubles, this is the average cost of the installers for installation;

  • When the lugs are in place, flexible windows can be fastened, everything is very simple and very fast.

If you cannot decide how to close the openings in the gazebo, then this option may be the ideal solution due to its simplicity and practicality.

Option number 3 - polycarbonate windows

This lightweight and inexpensive material appeared relatively recently, but has already gained great popularity both in roofing work and when closing openings in gazebos, this is due to several factors:

  • The material is lightweight, which makes it easy to work with;
  • The cost per square meter is about 250 rubles, which makes polycarbonate affordable for the widest range of buyers;
  • The range of colors is quite wide;
  • The design looks very good and lasts about 15 years.

As for the features of using this material, they are as follows:

  • To assemble a reliable and attractive structure, a special aluminum profile is used, from which you can quickly build a strong and lightweight frame into which polycarbonate is inserted. The profile is ordered in running meters and is calculated individually in each specific case;

  • If you will sheathe the gazebo completely, then the material can be attached directly to the frame using special self-tapping screws with rubber washers. In this case, the ends of the polycarbonate must be closed with end strips that are glued to the silicone, this prevents the accumulation of dirt inside the voids;

  • You can make sliding polycarbonate windows for the gazebo, in this case, the frames are placed on guides along which they will move in one or two directions. There are many design options: from a simple plastic profile to roller systems, choose what is more convenient for you;
  • Polycarbon's flexibility makes it the only option for semi-circular arbors, because you can attach it yourself to complex surfaces. This is how you can make a dome-shaped gazebo.

You can also use monolithic polycarbonate, which resembles glass, but unlike it is flexible. It is better to use options with a thickness of 3-4 mm, a sheet of such material measuring 2x3 meters will cost from 6500 to 8500 rubles, as you can see, this type of product is much more expensive than budget cellular polycarbonate.

Option number 4 - sliding aluminum frames

Such type of structures as sliding aluminum frames are widely used on balconies, but they can also be used with great success in gazebos, because the structure is easy to operate, has low weight, looks very good and perfectly resists adverse weather conditions. Moreover, both windows and doors can be made of aluminum, which will give the gazebo lightness and simplicity.

As for the implementation of the project, I will consider it in general terms:

  • First of all, it is necessary to measure the openings, it is better for specialists to do this work, since any mistakes will lead to the fact that you will have to order a new structure;
  • When ordering, it is better to choose options on rollers, they work much easier and much more reliable than simple frames on guides. It is better to read people's reviews of a particular company in order to choose the best manufacturer in your region;

  • It is better to entrust the installation work to specialists, since any errors in the process lead to distortions of the structure, and it will work incorrectly or the sashes will not move at all. This comes with additional costs, but for the best result it is better to spend a little more.

Option number 5 - PVC windows

I will say right away - this is the most expensive solution, but if you want to use the gazebo in the cold season, then this type of glazing is best suited. The thermal insulation characteristics of plastic double-glazed windows are an order of magnitude higher than any of the above options, so they should be installed on capital structures so that the windows do not turn out to be warmer than the walls.

To glaze a structure with plastic windows, you need to use a simple algorithm:

  • First of all, measurements are taken of the openings, if you do this, then remember that there should be a gap of 2-3 centimeters on each side, this will allow you to clearly set the position of the windows and insulate the lumen with mounting foam;
  • Then you need to order the insulating glass units themselves, I advise you to carefully choose the manufacturer, since there are many options and not all of them are of high quality. Look for reputable brands, there are a lot of them, and different options are presented in each region. High-quality products will cost you from 4000 per square meter and more, it is better not to consider cheap options;
  • You can completely build a gazebo from plastic windows, more precisely from a PVC profile. This is not the cheapest solution, but its implementation is very simple: they will make a structure of the required size and shape, and the only thing that you have to build yourself is a roof, the easiest way is to make it out of wood.

If you decide to build a gazebo made of plastic, then I advise you to close the lower part of the structure not with double-glazed windows, but with deaf elements, they are much more reliable and will withstand even strong blows without any problems.

Modern plastic, aluminum, wooden window structures are not just a tribute to the times, but also an important improvement in the heat-saving function of a house. Very often they replace old frames made of solid wood, which can serve for a very long time, but in a completely new quality. In which? Here are 16 ideas and detailed instructions for them.

Jewelry storage frame

The small frame is an excellent base for a stand where you can comfortably hang jewelry. If desired, the tree is cleaned with sandpaper from the old paint, or the old coating is left, renewing it where required. The glasses, together with the glazing beads, are removed, and a metal mesh is inserted into the gaps. It remains to screw on the hinges from the reverse side for hanging the stand on the wall and start decorating it.

Organizer for kitchen trivia

The kitchen is a room with high humidity, so the wood needs to be protected. The frame should be coated with varnish or oil paint in a pleasant shade for the eyes. The crossbars between the glasses are ready-made bases for hooks. Such an organizer can be placed in the work area or decorate a free wall with it. A lot of ladles, stirrers, graters and other tools will find their place on its hooks.

prompt! You can mount such an organizer not only on the wall, but also on the ceiling.

Greenhouse or greenhouse

Two frames with full glass will serve as an excellent base for a greenhouse on a personal plot. Choosing a garden bed. We surround its perimeter with stops. For this, ordinary cobblestones are suitable. We lay them out along the long sides of the bed. We push the two frames with their long sides into rows of cobblestones, and bring the upper sides together, getting a "house".

Advice! To give the structure stability, fasten it with door hinges.

Frame for pots with flowers

To hang 10 pots on the wall, you need to punch 10 holes for fasteners. You can do it differently. Take the old frame, remove the glass from it (or leave it as you like). We paint in a shade suitable for the interior. In the upper part, on the reverse side, we attach 2 hinges for hanging. We make 2 fasteners in the wall (screws or dowels). We hang the stand, and then we attach as many pots as we want to it.

Coffee table

The sturdy frame is a finished worktop. It can be decorated in any way: painting, carving, painting, varnishing, etc. From below, it remains only to screw the legs to get a coffee table of a suitable height.

Headboards

Rustic style requires a lot of light and unmistakable signs of antiquity in the interior. Making a headboard out of a rectangular or arched frame is a great idea. We remove the old headboard by the bed and attach a new one from 1, 2 or even 4 frames. Fortunately, wood is a pliable material for creating volumetric structures, and self-tapping screws and ordinary nails can be used as fasteners.

Picture frame

If the thickness of the frame is not very large, like its format, then it can easily turn into a photo frame. When the binding is already divided into 6 cells, this is ideal, but the internal space can be independently distributed into the required number of sectors with slats. All you need is to nail down a sheet of plywood on the back, and the stand is ready. Photos are easily attached with buttons, pins.

Tray

A small window sash transforms into a neat and reliable tray in a matter of minutes. You only need two hinge-type door handles, which we attach to the right and left, in order to conveniently carry the tray from place to place. But in the decor you can show all your imagination.

Organizer

We have several containers, dainty hooks, decorative pouches or baskets - you can make a great organizer for anything. It is enough to distribute all this wealth over the frame in artistic order (or disorder). It is not necessary to remove the glasses. It remains to find a place for the masterpiece in the workshop or closet.

Hanger

An elegant hanger can be obtained from any frame. Glass will only add grace to the finished item. If there are 2 doors, then they are fastened at a right angle and get a hanger with a shelf. All you need to buy is hooks and wall fasteners that are suitable in size and design.

Summer gazebo

Sometimes the windows are changed as planned and as a result they get a whole bunch of large frames. It is expensive to take them out and dispose of, but making a gazebo out of them is much easier and more useful. To make the structure really strong, make 4 support pillars, the lower ends of which are dug into the ground and reinforced with cement mortar. But the frames can be attached to this frame as it is more convenient in this case.

Note board

You will need: frame - 1 piece, a sheet of plywood in a slightly smaller format. We nail the plywood to the base and cover it with black paint. In a suitable location, you can simply nail the board to the wall.

Watch

A ready-made mechanism, along with numbers and arrows, can be bought in a store, or you can use an existing one. We take a small sash and make a hole with a glass cutter. We insert the clockwork and fix the rest of the watch parts with special glue. You can hang!

Advice! The thinner the frame, the more elegant the finished result will be.

Room decoration

Colorful panels and posters are a great decoration for any interior. Together with a banal frame, you can use a more creative option. Take the window sash with glass and place the poster behind it. In this form, the picture takes on a completely different charm.

Mirror

Depending on where exactly the mirror will hang, you can decorate it in different ways. For example, use only the outer contour of the window frame, filling its inner space with a single piece of mirror. Or cut the mirrors according to the glass format and replace the glazing with them.

Garden lantern

Small frames are ready-made parts for assembling a garden lantern. In fact, we need a box in which one of the edges of the parallelepiped is folding. It is very easy to make it like this, just use furniture hinges. And from above we attach a hook for hanging the flashlight in the gazebo or on the veranda.

Do-it-yourself gazebos from scrap materials can have an even better look than those made by professionals from popular building materials. The options for such structures are very different.

Even glass bottles (see), which are a pity to throw away, will come in handy for the construction of an original structure for a suburban area. The main thing is to choose the right solution on which they will stick. The article will tell you what materials you can use for the gazebo.

The material at hand for the gazebo can be very different.

For example:

  • Remains after the construction of the main building.
  • Glass bottles. When constructing a gazebo from such material, it will be necessary to make a strip foundation. A solution for laying bottles is a cement-sand mixture or with a lime base.

When laying bottles, each next layer should be carried out only after the previous one has completely dried, which increases the strength of the structure and facilitates work.

Tip: When stacking bottles, it is imperative to close the neck to prevent the solution from getting inside. The finished structure is translucent, and when dirt, solution or any foreign objects appear inside the bottle, they will be visible.

  • Plastic bottles... Such a gazebo from improvised material with their own hands is constructed using the following technology:
  1. a large number of plastic bottles are collected;
  2. they are filled with ordinary sand;
  3. caps are screwed;
  4. the bottles are tied together with a strong rope;
  5. the free space is filled with cement-sand mortar.
  • Videocassettes.

  • Beer cans.
  • Wooden pallets.

How to build a gazebo from old window frames

After the building materials for the gazebo have been identified, you can begin to implement your plan.

Work instructions:

  • The territory is marked.
  • By marking the base, a shallow trench is dug in the form of the letter "P".
  • A pillow about 12 centimeters thick is laid out of sand.
  • Open window frames are fastened with self-tapping screws with narrow planks.
  • This is how the back wall and two sides of the building are constructed.

Tip: To exclude the effects of moisture, the structure should be treated with any moisture-proof material or painted.

  • The assembled structure is installed on a ditch prepared in advance.
  • Everything is held together with metal hooks.
  • After complete assembly and fixing of the elements, the trench is covered with earth.
  • Careful compaction of the surface is carried out.
  • These parts of the gazebo must be firmly installed and not swayed by the wind.
  • The roof for such a structure should be lightweight, well protected from rain and sun. The ideal option for such a gazebo is a multi-colored oilcloth, which will give the design a practicality and an attractive look.

The oilcloth is placed on the walls, gently straightened and fixed to the frame with nails, at an equal distance.

  • From the materials at hand, the gazebo is decorated and decorated (see). To do this, you can use plastic items: chairs and benches. Plastic is resistant to temperature extremes and many other harmful environmental influences.

Other gazebo designs

A simple and absolutely free gazebo can turn out to be weaving from rods (see).

When constructing such a structure:

  • Before making a gazebo from scrap materials, which are rods, stakes are driven into the ground to a depth of at least 35 centimeters. They are usually sourced from hardwoods, but others that do not shoot can be used.
  • The weaving of the structure is done with a pigtail or string.

Simple fabric gazebos can be made from the remnants of fabrics, old sheets. The frame for them with your own hands can be constructed from pieces of wire of large diameter or wooden racks. Simple gazebos look original, they have fabric roofs, as you can see in the photo.

The design of a simple gazebo is selected based on its location, climate conditions, and available materials for manufacturing. A drawing of a gazebo from scrap materials can be developed independently or taken from professionals.

What materials at hand for the construction of a gazebo can be used, the features of their construction, advantages and disadvantages, the video in this article shows in detail.

My brother replaced the windows in his house, and wanted to throw out the old frames with glass. I took them for myself, and after a year they were very useful to me. I made a cozy gazebo out of the windows with my own hands.

Phased construction of a gazebo from window frames

I cleared an area of 2x3 m on the site.Around the perimeter of the rectangle I pulled a thread on pegs and installed nine supporting pedestals along it (photo 1) from paving slabs and cement.

From a lining and a bar with a section of 60x60 mm, I assembled three walls 1 m high: two 3 m long, and one 2 m long. I installed them on pedestals and connected them together with metal corners and self-tapping screws into a U-shaped frame. He connected the lower bars of parallel walls with crossbeams from a board 6 cm thick.A floor was laid on them from a board of 4 cm.

In the corners, in the middle and in the place of the intended doorway, I fixed vertical posts made of a timber with a section of 10x10 cm and a length of 3 m on the walls.Above, on the posts, I fixed a strapping from a board with a section of 12x4 cm.In the resulting openings I fixed windows on three sides with self-tapping screws.

On the long parallel beams of the upper harness, I fixed three rows of rafters made of 80x80 mm timber. I nailed a sheathing of edged boards to them and covered it with a heat-insulating substrate, on top of which I laid the slate (photo 2)... The gables were sewn up with plastic panels.

On the upper harness, I fixed the transverse beams from a board 4 cm wide, sheathed them inside the room with clapboard (photo 3).

Installed two interior doors in an open doorway (photo 4), one of which opens, and in a free space to the corner, I installed a window frame and a shield from the lining.

Examples of gazebos from window frames

An excellent do-it-yourself gazebo can be built inexpensively from old windows. We will show, using the example of this beautiful summer house, the stages of building a gazebo and its arrangement.

Do-it-yourself gazebo: an inexpensive option from used windows.

We select the dimensions of the gazebo in accordance with the dimensions of our old frames so that there is as little additional work as possible. Experience has shown that every the frame had to be measured, because old frames were made by hand and their sizes varied significantly from each other.

We also plan to use the old double-leaf interior doors for the gazebo.

We fill in a small strip foundation under the gazebo and erect a wooden frame.

We lay out the lower part of the gazebo with brickwork. As practice has shown, if there is enough brick, then it is convenient to lay out the lower part of the back wall of the gazebo with masonry, so that it does not blow from it.

We put the frames in the places designated for them. We erect a roof and cover it with transparent slate.

The floors in the greenhouse gazebo are simply laid out of bricks on a cement-sand cushion, under which there is an agrofilm that protects against weeds.

We fill the finished masonry with a liquid cement solution - in about the same way garden paths are made. What is this brick box? - This is for flowers.

We install doors.

Rear view of the gazebo. Because it will be used and as a mini-greenhouse there are opening windows in the upper part of the back wall.

Near the gazebo, a small area was paved with paving slabs.

Even in autumn, this gazebo is quite functional, because protects from piercing wind and rain.

And in the summer, life in the gazebo is more lively.
It is both a breakfast area and a work space for working with seedlings, and just a secluded place where you can be alone with your thoughts.

In the spring, a small flower garden was laid out next to the gazebo.

And behind the gazebo is a flower garden with roses.

The area next to the gazebo serves as a dining area for the nearby grill.

A do-it-yourself gazebo from old windows is a completely practical and aesthetic option for a summer residence.

Perhaps the only thing that could have been done differently is not to put the frames in the lower part of the rear wall of the gazebo.
