On their basis, it is already easier to make accurate calculations of the required amount of wallpaper.

Required values

In order for the gluing process to go smoothly and without "unnecessary nerves", as mentioned earlier, everything must be measured and calculated in advance. Otherwise, you may get a "surprise" in the form of a bare spot on the wall with a missing piece of wallpaper, or, conversely, there are too many rolls left.

First of all, for calculations, you will need such quantities as the length and height of each of the walls to be pasted over later.

For example, you can take an ordinary room of standard sizes, for example, it has the following footage: the height of the walls is 2.5 m, the width of the room is 3 m, and the length is 5 m.

The first thing to do is, armed with an ordinary tape measure, find out the length of each of the walls. Then we add the known values ​​on paper: (3 + 5) x2 = 16 m - this is the perimeter of the room being measured.

Next, you need to measure the width of the wallpaper (usually, these parameters are written on each roll, the standard width is 0.5 m). The resulting number of the perimeter of the room is divided by the width of the wallpaper, that is, 16 m: 0.5 m = 32. This number shows how many strips of wallpaper are needed for the room.

The next value that will be needed when calculating is how many strips will be obtained from each roll in order to find out their number later. A standard roll has a footage of 10, 25 or 50 meters, but if a non-standard roll was purchased, where fractional values, then for ease of calculation we round to an even number. We divide this length by the known height of the room wall. It turns out 10 m: 2.5 m = 4 - so many strips will be obtained from one roll of wallpaper.

The only thing left is to find out the exact number of rolls. To do this, divide the number of strips required for the entire room by the number of strips in one roll. 32: 4 = 8 - as many rolls are needed to completely cover the selected room.

Craftsmen, in turn, advise you to buy one more roll of wallpaper, since there is always a chance of making a mistake or accidentally spoiling several strips, and so as not to run after the next bundle of the required wallpaper (which may no longer be in the store) , it is better to always have a little in reserve. It will also always be possible to replace the damaged fragment with children or pets.

Instrument preparation

A very important process before directly pasting the walls with wallpaper is thorough preparation, since during this process a certain number of auxiliary tools and improvised means will be required.

The very first item that you can't do without is a regular pencil, they will need to mark the deferred length on the wallpaper. It can be either special construction or ordinary.

Of course, you can't do without a long ruler or a construction tape. With their help, the parameters of the room (length, height, width) will be measured, and the wallpaper roll will be ruled. It will be difficult and time-consuming to measure the room space with a ruler, so for these purposes it is better to use a tape measure, and with its help, in turn, it is difficult to draw straight lines on a sheet of wallpaper. In this regard, it is better to take both.

To cut the canvases into separate sheets, a clerical knife or sharp scissors will come in handy, but I recommend the first option to the master, since it is easy to use it to make cuts or slots for sockets and wiring. It is also easy for them to give injections when they need to release air bubbles, but here it is wiser to use a needle, it will turn out more accurately and invisibly. In turn, scissors are useful for cutting out some "curly" parts, where clarity and smoothness of lines is required.

Of course, you need a screwdriver to remove the protective bulging box from the switches or any other fixings on the wall.

Since the walls and corners in the house are not always perfectly even, and the pattern on the wallpaper is present, the building level will come in handy. With its help, it will be easy to glue the strip so that both the pattern and the corners are not "crooked".

You will need two containers, one for water, and the second will mix the glue. Water is needed to wipe off accidentally dropped drops of glue with a cloth, if you quickly wipe it off, then there will be no traces.

If we talk about a rag, then it must be clean and soft (wet wallpaper is easy to crush and damage). It is very important that in the process of wiping off excess glue, it is damp, but not wet, otherwise the wallpaper may soak in moisture and simply slide down the wall.

In order to qualitatively mix the glue solution, you will need a construction mixer or an ordinary wooden stick, which will have to mix the ingredients for a long time and with high quality. Masters advise to pour out the glue not all at once, but in parts, so it will turn out to make it more uniform and without lumps.

In order to apply the adhesive evenly and quickly, it is best to use a roller or wide brush with medium bristles. As for the roller, it should have a small pile.

A very convenient fixture for gluing is a paint bath. It has a recess for solutions and a ribbed surface with a bevel (so that the excess flows back). It is good to pour small amounts of glue into it, dip the roller there, and remove the excess by scrolling it on the ribbed side. It is very important that its size matches the width of the roller, otherwise there will be no effect from the bath.

A good assistant in getting rid of trapped air under the glued wallpaper cloth will be a wallpaper spatula. The main thing is that it is either rubberized or plastic, otherwise the metal can crush or break the still wet, not dry strip. It "expels" not only air bubbles, but also excess glue, which must be wiped off and removed immediately.

For places such as joints between strips, there is a special roller. It is made of rubber or silicone and is shaped like a small round barrel. It is very convenient for them to push through the joints without causing damage or deformation to the wallpaper. There is also a special roller for corner contacts of the surface with the wallpaper - these are places near the ceiling, near the floor or in the corners of the room. Due to its flat shape, it is easy for them to push through all the corners so that the strip holds well.

Of course, do not forget about duct tape. With its help, you need to glue over all the "bare" wires, which will later serve to install the socket and so on.

Of course, the above list can be supplemented with all sorts of newfangled devices, but this is enough for high-quality gluing of the wallpaper.

Measuring the area of ​​a room

As mentioned earlier, without accurate measurement of all three main parameters of the room, it will not be possible to calculate the exact number of wallpaper rolls. This is especially true of the case when you need to paste over not one room in an apartment or house, but several.

To make it easier to visualize, you will need to draw a general schematic plan of the room. To do this, you will need a pencil, a ruler, and a simple sheet of paper. You will also need a tape measure with which to measure space.

Having schematically indicated the walls and the location of the windows on paper, it is necessary to sign such quantities as the height of the walls, the width and length of the room itself. Then specify the window parameters in order to subtract them from the total footage, since they do not need to be pasted over.

Next, we find out the area of ​​each wall and add it together to find out the total number. To do this, we multiply the height by the width. Let's say that this space is 2.5 m high, 3 m wide, and 4 m long.

We find out the area of ​​the first wall: 2.5x3 = 7.5 sq. m. Further, we multiply this number by 2, since there are two such walls - they are opposite. 7.5 sq. mx 2 = 15 sq. m - 2 walls in total. We do the same with the other two. (2.5 mx 4) x 2 = 20 sq. m. Add the obtained values ​​- 10 +15 = 25 sq. m - the area of ​​the entire surface of the walls in the room.

Do not forget about the surface area of ​​the window to be subtracted. First, it must be calculated in a known way. Let's take the dimensions of an ordinary window - width 1.35 m, height 1.45 m. 1.35 x 1.45 = 1.96 sq. m. The obtained result is subtracted from the total surface area of ​​the walls of the room - 25 -1.96 = 23.04 square meters. m - the area of ​​the glued surface of the walls.

Any room has an entrance door or passage, which is also not a surface, it does not need to be pasted over with wallpaper. In this regard, the surface area of ​​the door and the entrance space itself must be subtracted from the above obtained total wall area. An ordinary door with a transom is 2.5 meters high and 0.8 m wide. 2.5 x 0.8 = 2 square meters. m (the area of ​​the door with a gap from it to the ceiling).

Subtract the calculated area from the total - 23.04 - 2 = 21.04 sq. m.

From the result obtained, using simple mathematical calculations, you can find out the number of required rolls of wallpaper for the room, knowing the coverage area of ​​one roll.

Here, the length is also multiplied by the width, and then the total area of ​​the room is divided by the area of ​​one wallpaper roll.

Non-standard surfaces

There are also rooms that have a non-standard layout, but the calculation must still be carried out. To be 100% accurate, even in a room of standard sizes and parameters, the walls are not always even and they must first be leveled, otherwise the ornament or pattern on the wallpaper will be difficult to fit over the entire surface of the walls.

Unusual surfaces include walls with rounded corners, or when the wall itself is in the shape of a semicircle. There are rooms where the walls are rounded towards the ceiling and have a domed upper part. There are also protrusions or partitions that divide the space into zones and so on.

To determine the number of wallpaper rolls, you will still have to calculate the area in this case. Masters advise to "cut" the space into convenient shapes (square, rectangle). For this, the width of the wall and its height at the highest point are taken and mentally connected into a rectangle. Rounded triangles will remain at the corners, which are also divided into squares. Later, all the sums of the areas are added up, and the total area is obtained.

But many "seasoned" upholsterers say that it is not necessary to calculate so thoroughly.

In the process of gluing, you just need to cut off the excess along the bend contour using a regular knife or clerical (it will be more accurate with it).

If the wall has the parameters of an ordinary rectangle, but is convex in the form of a Russian letter c, then its width is measured using a tape measure, which must be pressed tightly to the surface. The height will be normal, without any problems and any changes. And then the area is calculated according to the well-known formula.

In the case when there are convex details or certain structures on the wall (for example, a pipe from an exhaust hood, which was covered with rectangular sheets of drywall or PVC), then its area must also be calculated and added to the total surface. It is good when it has a clear angular shape, like a square or rectangle, but if there are rounded parts, then it is also better to calculate them, as well as “correct” figures, and then remove small excess with a knife.

Roll sizes

After all the necessary parameters of the room have been calculated, then you should start calculating the wallpaper. Before that, you need to know the width and length of the selected roll.

Today, there are several standards for the metric parameters of the wallpaper, as there are manufacturers both foreign and local, that is, Russian.

The roll width has many variations, but today there are three main sizes, which most manufacturers try to adhere to:

  • 53 cm- the most frequently used size, therefore it is found in foreign and local brands of wallpaper. Since it is very convenient for gluing, it is preferred more than others.

  • 70 cm Is the second most widespread width. This size is more popular with European manufacturers. As everyone knows, people are trying to buy imported wallpaper, because they, in turn, are better in some parameters, and therefore the demand for such a width is very high.
  • 106 cm- as the masters say, the wider the wallpaper, the faster you can complete the process, but this is not always the case. With this width, "massive" wallpaper rolls are most often made.

For the Russian market, one meter and half meter wide wallpaper is preferable.

As for such a parameter as length, then everything is a little simpler.

In this case, there are also three main sizes:

  • The most basic length is 10.5 meters. Most wallpaper manufacturers adhere to it. It is enough for 3 full stripes on the wall.
  • For wallpaper rolls 53 centimeters wide, a typical length of 15 meters. As a rule, this is wallpaper made of vinyl or non-woven material.
  • For heavy wallpaper cloths with a meter width, made of fiberglass or the same non-woven fabric, a footage of 25 meters is made.

In a wallpaper roll, there is such a concept as the area of ​​coverage, which varies from its length.

When a standard length of 1050 cm is made, and a width of 53 cm, then according to the formula (S = a * b), it turns out 53000 sq. cm (5.3 sq. m). With a similar width and a length of 1500 cm, the area will be almost 80,000 square meters. cm (8 sq. m). If we take a length of 2500 cm and a width of 106 cm, then it turns out - 25 square meters. m. - 25,000 sq. cm.

Rapport and drawing options

It may seem that wallpapering is reduced only to calculating the footage, the number of stripes, and then rolls. Basically, this is true, but only applies to wallpapers that do not have a pattern or complex ornament. In this case, you will need to adjust the wallpaper to make it look like a monolithic piece.

Before choosing a wallpaper with a pattern, you need to determine what rapport is. Rapport is the repetition of a pattern or pattern on a wallpaper roll. In turn, it is divided into 2 types. It happens lateral (the pattern goes along the width of the sheet) and high-rise (the ornament is repeated in height). This location directly depends on the parameters of the canvas and the size and type of the ornament itself.

When gluing such wallpapers, there is one most important need - to align the wallpaper strips according to the pattern, which affects the final result. The fact is that for such wallpapers there is a slightly different calculation of the rolls.

To do everything right, you need the conventions located on each such wallpaper:

  • If the designation is drawn on the label - an arrow together with 0, then this indicates that this roll of wallpaper can be glued and docked with the stripes without fear of violating the integrity of the ornament, there is not much difference.

  • When arrows are shown pointing at each other, the wallpaper stripes must be clearly joined along the edges. But, if the opposite arrows are displaced (one above the other), then you need to glue with an offset up or down (in this case, a special calculation of the canvas will be made over the entire surface of the wall). As a rule, numbers are indicated on the packaging of such rolled sheets. For example - 55 \ 23, the first number indicates (in centimeters) the size of the ornament or pattern, and the second - how much (also in centimeters) one strip should be shifted relative to the other.
  • In the case when the arrows point to each other from bottom to top, this means that during the arrangement of the wallpaper sheets, there should be an opposite joining.

Don't throw away short, patterned stripes.

They can be used for space under a window, between a radiator and a window sill, or for a wall gap above a door.

From the above, it is clear that the calculation of material with rapport will be different. First, you need to find out the perimeter of the wall, then divide it by the width of the wallpaper and get the number of strips you need. Then, you need to calculate how many offsets will need to be done on one strip, the larger the pattern, the more wallpaper you will need. Knowing this information, we find the number of rolls.

Consider an example of calculating the number of wallpapers per room that are sold in running meters at a certain width of the canvas, in other words, standard roll wallpaper. Let's take, for example, the dimensions of the room 4 x 7 meters, the height of the ceiling is 3 meters. Wallpaper 70 cm wide (0.7 m), pattern repeat 45 cm (straight pattern).

First, we need to divide the perimeter of the room by the width of the wallpaper to find out the number of canvases: (4 + 7) x 2 / 0.7m = 31.43. Round off and get 32 ​​canvases. Next, we calculate the height of the canvas, taking into account the pattern rapport. It is necessary to add 10 cm to the height of the room - a margin for leveling the edges, i.e. 3 + 0.1 = 3.1m. Divide the resulting height by the rapport value: 3.1 / 0.45 = 6.89. Rounding off, we get 7 repetitions of the pattern on one canvas. We multiply this number by the value of the rapport 7 x 0.45 = 3.15 - the new height, taking into account the rapport.

Having learned the new height, we multiply it by the number of canvases and get the required number of running meters for a given room: 3.15 x 32 = 101 running meters.

If the pattern is shifted, then add another 1/2 of the pattern alignment value to the resulting height (for example, if the rapport is 45 cm "shifted pattern", then the height of the canvas should be 315 cm + 22.5 cm = 337.5 cm).

Since our wallpaper is sold in rolls, then its length (for example, 10.5 m) is divided by the new height and we get the number of canvases from one roll: 10.5 / 3.375 = 3.11 Rounding down we get 3 canvases from a roll. We set the size of the room:

  • Height = 2.5 meters

To determine the area of ​​the sticker, you, the perimeter, is the sum of all sides of the room, multiply by its height. In numbers, it looks like this:

3 + 3 + 5.5 + 5.5 = 17m x 2.5m = 42.5m2.

Now you need to subtract the area of ​​the openings from the total area - this is a door and a window or two. We measure the width and height of the window with a tape measure - they are all different, but in the example we use the size of the area - 1.5x1.5 = 2.25m2 .

If you also have a balcony door, then I suggest counting the entire balcony block together, like a rectangle, since there is usually a battery under the window. Then the calculation will be: 1.7x 2.35 = 4m2, like mine.

We take into account the door to the room. In terms of area, it will be equal to 2.1x 0.8 = 1.7m2

Now let's calculate the final wallpaper requirement:

42.5m2 (total area) - 2.25 (window) - 1.7 (door) = 38.6m2.

Or with a balcony, then 42.5 - 4 - 1.7 = 36.8m2.

Now you should choose a wallpaper to know its length and width and determine how many rolls you need. For example, you have chosen wallpaper 10 meters high and 0.53 meters wide, then the roll area = 5.3 m2. You need to take 38.6: 5.3 = 7.3 rolls, that is, 8 pieces.

My working painters calculate the number of wallpaper in their own way - they do not need space, since the girls count the number of stripes on the old wallpaper on the walls. If the wallpaper has already been removed, then they measure the width of the wallpaper with a tape measure and apply the specified width along the entire perimeter of the room, calculating the number of stripes. Let's say you got 26 strips, so you need 26: 4 = 6.5 rolls. Round up to seven. And you know, they think as well as I do with my arithmetic calculations.

  • Wallpaper with the selection of a pattern can be calculated according to the same principle, by determining the area of ​​\ u200b \ u200bthe walls. To choose a pattern, you need to shift the canvases by 15-30cm. So calculate that it will take up to 1.2 meters from each roll (4 strips x 0.3m offset). That is, you will already get 3 whole canvases and a piece. Moreover, there is a regularity - the larger the pattern in size, the more you need to move the wallpaper for selection.
  • Of course, in order to save money, and we all strive for this, these pieces can be used and pasted over the wall behind the wall, cabinet and other items with them. This is especially true if the wallpaper is expensive and we are financially economical. There are different situations.
  • But I want to tell you that it is not for nothing that they say that "the need for invention is cunning." It is possible from these meter or one and a half meter pieces to combine the bottom or top of one wall, and the second will be from wallpaper of a different tone, texture. Of course, if the height of your walls is different, then the number of stripes may also be different. For example, with a wall height of 3 m, you will get only 3 stripes and 1 m will remain, which can be used over door or window openings.

20: 0.53 = 38.3 pcs. Rounding off, we get 39 strips of wallpaper that we need to paste over the entire room.

Now we divide the number of all strips by the number of strips in 1 roll.

39: 4 = 9.7 - rounded again, we get 10 rolls of finishing material.

Of course, there are also door and window openings in the room. Well, if the openings are too large, then their width can be subtracted from the perimeter and further calculated according to the proposed scheme. But do not forget that openings are usually not made along the entire height of the room, therefore, in order to glue the area above or below the opening, you will need a few more meters of material.

The number of rolls of non-standard width wallpaper - 0.68; 0.9; 1.06; 1.40 m is calculated in the same way, but instead of 0.53 m, we use the corresponding width in the calculation.

Another simple way to calculate the amount of wallpaper is to use it in calculating the area of ​​the surface to be glued.

For example, let's take the same numbers as in the previous version: the width of the walls is 6 and 4 m, the height is 2.5 m.

2 × (6 + 4) × 2.5 = 50 m 2. This is the area that needs to be covered with wallpaper. At the very beginning, we multiplied by 2, because we have two such walls.

Now we find out the surface area of ​​one roll, for this we multiply its width by its length:

0.53 × 10 = 5.3 m 2. That is, one roll of wallpaper can cover 5 m 2 of the wall with a small residue that is usually not taken into account.

50: 5 = 10. We got 10 rolls again.

For a more accurate calculation, you can determine the area of ​​the openings - door and window, and if they are much larger than 5 m 2, then one can be subtracted from the calculated number of rolls, since it has an area of ​​5 m 2.

Such calculations can be done if the pattern on the wallpaper is small or repetitive and does not need to be adjusted.

It is most difficult to calculate the required number of rolls of patterned wallpaper with a strict geometric or large pattern. They are glued, strictly observing the integrity of the pattern. Then the calculation of the number of rolls is made taking into account the rapport - the distance between the individual elements of the pattern or pattern. The rapport is usually indicated on the label included in the package. Wallpaper with a large rapport generates a lot of waste, so first calculate how much it will cost you and whether it is worth buying at all.
