At present, young people have access to a higher two-level education. Every student who in the future wants to become an excellent specialist in his chosen profile should clearly understand the undergraduate and graduate programs - what it is and how these degrees differ from each other. The difference between them is significant, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Find out what are the features of these academic degrees.

What is undergraduate

This is the first, basic stage of academic education. The conditions for access to it are simple. It is necessary to get secondary, specialized secondary or vocational education. You can do it after graduating from the 11th grade of a school, specialized college, technical school or school. There is a misconception that undergraduate education is an incomplete higher education. This is not true. A bachelor's degree is the first full-fledged degree of higher education, in the presence of which a person has the right to get a job in a specialty.

How much do you study

As a rule, the educational process lasts four years, although there are exceptions. A student receives an academic undergraduate degree after passing exams. It is worth noting that there are a number of specialties that even at the basic level cannot be mastered in 4 courses, especially in the medical and technical fields. Education at such faculties is divided into other stages that do not fit into the general concept of the European educational standard.

Undergraduate program

The plan is designed to give students practical knowledge of their chosen specialty. There are practically no focused disciplines in the educational program. If they are included, then with a minimum number of hours, and give only basic knowledge. The bachelor's degree was originally conceived in order for the student to choose a narrow specialty, and consciously continued his master's education in it. In Russian practice, this stage has become relatively independent.

Recently, undergraduate studies have been divided into two categories according to a number of characteristics and tasks assigned to students, although this innovation is not practiced everywhere so far. Types of the first stage of academic education:

 1. Applied. For students who plan to get a job immediately after graduation. Practical training is underway. The form of study at the applied baccalaureate is only full-time.
 2. Academic. Professional training of bachelors planning to enter further on a magistracy. The emphasis is on research, many theoretical courses. You can study both in full-time and part-time form.

Bachelor in Russia

The program began to be introduced into the practice of our country after the signing of the Bologna Convention. Reform implies the gradual creation of a single educational space of the European standard. Higher education in all countries should be two-stage: undergraduate and graduate. Previously, students received a specialist diploma after studying for 5-6 years. Now they are gradually moving away from this practice, but so far the “specialty” level has not been completely abolished, because not all professions can be mastered in 4 years, even at a basic level.

What is a magistracy

This is the second stage of higher education, but in order to gain access to it, it is necessary to obtain the first. A person is considered a master after he completes the training process. Bachelors and those who have received a specialty before entering the Bologna system can apply for a magistracy for free. The course of subjects is selected so that the student is as immersed in practical and scientific activity as possible.

The programs are supervised by teachers of the highest qualifications, doctors of sciences. From every first semester, a mentor from among them is attached to each student. Under the guidance of a teacher, a person chooses the direction of scientific research and defends a master's thesis. During the training, the student receives pedagogical skills and at the end of the program can work as a teacher.

Why do i need

Many people do not understand why they should go to lectures for some more time, if after a bachelor's degree you can immediately get a job. A person needs a master's degree in order to have the right to occupy leadership positions. To get a job in a number of specialties, you also need to get the second level of higher education. In addition, a magistracy can be completed in order to get an education not in the initially chosen, but in another specialty.

What gives

Education is not easy, but it brings many benefits. Having graduated from a magistracy, you will receive such opportunities:

 1. You will be able to occupy leadership positions, work in professions that require both levels of higher education.
 2. Professional growth will be fast, even if there is high competition.
 3. You will receive a lot of useful and in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
 4. If you realize that you mistakenly chose a specialization, then the magistracy gives you the right to change it.
 5. The scholarship and other social guarantees (a place in a hostel, etc.) will be extended for another number of years.
 6. You will have an open road to graduate school and teaching.

Do I need to go to graduate school after undergraduate

Each person makes this decision personally. It will be objectively unfair to say that a bachelor is an inferior education. Nevertheless, before deciding whether to enter a master's program, think about the following opportunities that it provides to a graduate of a university:

 • the diploma is recognized internationally;
 • experience working with foreign teachers;
 • development and research for the candidate work;
 • equivalence of foreign scientific qualifications PhD.

How to enter a magistracy

Obtaining the second stage of higher education is possible only at the end of the bachelor's degree. It will be necessary to pass an oral comprehensive interdisciplinary exam in the direction of preparation. Its content, the order of conducting are determined by each university, therefore, they are different everywhere. The results are evaluated on a 100-point scale in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna system. The training lasts two years. It is not necessary to act immediately, at first you can work for several years in the specialty.

Who can do

To apply, you must have a higher professional education. A bachelor’s, specialist, or master’s diploma will do. Of the additional documents you need a statement, an identity card, a medical certificate and several photos. To enter on a budgetary basis, you must have either a bachelor's degree or a specialty obtained before the Bologna process. Master's education may not be connected with the direction of fundamental preparation chosen last time.

Master in another specialty

In the process of obtaining higher education, you will be able to change its direction. You can take any specialty, but practice shows that it is preferable to choose an adjacent one. However, if you are confident that you have the necessary knowledge to pass the entrance exam in a completely different profession, there are no obstacles. Postgraduate studies in another specialty are available in any Russian university and even outside the country.

Paid by employer

The labor legislation lists compensation and guarantees for employees who combine professional activities with training. For example, a magistracy in a number of specialties, especially highly scientific, is financed by the employer, to whom the state will transfer the funds. If admission is a personal initiative of the employee, then he will have to pay for training, the company can only provide leave at his own expense.

If an employee requires a second scientific stage for career growth in a specific organization, they are not allowed to dismiss him. In this situation, development in two scenarios is possible:

 1. The employer pays all expenses related to education. This is done if the company is very interested in the employee.
 2. The company gives paid vacation days to attend preparatory courses, lectures, and exams.

What is the difference between a bachelor and a master

The difference between these levels of education is not only in the number of job opportunities. What is the difference between undergraduate and graduate programs? A few examples:

 1. Only a bachelor can enter a magistracy.
 2. Only a student who has an academic master's degree has the right to study in graduate school.
 3. Undergraduate studies last four years. In magistracy - two.
 4. The second level of higher education can not be obtained in the specialty that you acquired at the undergraduate.
 5. What is a bachelor? It is focused on work, the practical use of knowledge gained. The magistracy prepares for work in the research field.
 6. The second level of higher education is not available at all educational institutions.

Bachelor's diploma

This document confirming that a person has the first qualification level of higher education provides him with the right to find a job in his specialty, as a rule, in the social and economic spheres. Its owner has the full right to continue education and enroll in a magistracy. In foreign practice, most people immediately get a job after receiving a bachelor's degree. Only those who plan to engage in science and research continue to study.

Master's degree

With such a document, a large selection of jobs is available to a person. Master's degree significantly increases your chances of finding a job in a specialty in analytical and research centers, large corporations. This diploma is a must-have for those who plan to continue to enter graduate school or engage in teaching activities.

How many years in graduate school?

In full-time education, mainly 3 years. At correspondence - 4. To complete postgraduate study, a person must write and defend a dissertation, and also pass at least 3 exams: in a specialty, a foreign language, and the history and philosophy of science. After successful defense of the dissertation, the graduate student receives the status of a candidate of sciences and has the right to continue studying in doctoral studies.

They enter graduate school after graduating. If the student had special talents, then teachers recommend him to graduate school, in this case, when, of course, passing the exams, he enters to study for free (exams: the main subject by profile, English and philosophy). Full-time training will be three years. I did just that, but I never went to study - I was offered a good job and I agreed. As a souvenir, I only had a post-graduate student ticket. But I do not regret it. There was no desire to work at the university for a penny. Moreover, I really did not want to learn philosophy (a required subject in all specialties).

Full-time postgraduate study lasts 3 years, and part-time study lasts 4 years. It is assumed that during this time you must write a dissertation and pass candidate exams in a foreign language, philosophy and specialty. After graduate school is defended dissertation, if it is written.

3 years of full-time and part-time postgraduate study. During this time, you must pass a candidate minimum (exams in philosophy, a foreign language and a profile), write and print the required number of VAK articles, prepare a dissertation for defense. This period may be shorter if your dissertation is ready earlier.

Applicants - people who write their own dissertations, can study for up to five years, as far as I remember.

The terms of study in graduate school depend on the form of study: they study longer by correspondence - 4 years, if a student is accepted on a paid basis, then correspondence graduate school is cheaper for a year of study.

Studying at the budget full-time graduate school will take 3 years.

Graduate and graduate studies: is it worth studying further?

Currently, there is a process of integration of higher education in Russia in the European space. This leads to the need for a new look at the system of higher education in general. Master's degrees guarantee mobility in employment and are comparable in all countries of the world. High-quality higher education that meets international standards is a promising opportunity to build a scientific or business career in Russia or abroad.

Now there is an update of the State educational standards of higher professional education. Most universities and other higher education institutions consider the implementation of master's programs as one of their priority areas of activity. As a result of the changes in the field of higher education, some Russian universities are faced with the fact that they will have to update the form and content of the educational services provided. According to international educational standards, the process of creating effective mechanisms for the development of specialties and faculties is long and difficult.

Transition difficulties

As a result of the reform of higher professional education, a transition to a two-level system should be made. The first level is a bachelor's degree, the term of study at this level is 4 years. The second level is a magistracy, the term of study is 6 years, of which 4 years are undergraduate and 2 years are master's degrees. Russia is now in the process of transition to a 2-tier education system. Not all universities are currently ready for such a reform. Not every university can provide educational services across the entire spectrum of specialties and areas of training, not every university can have graduate school and master's program. Therefore, choosing a university, it is necessary to take into account not only its specialization, but also the possibility of further studies in a magistracy or graduate school within its walls. The specifics of some professions suggests that after 4 years of study in the undergraduate program for further successful practical activities take a 2-year master's course.

The transition of higher education to European standards will undoubtedly bring tangible benefits to future graduates. However, both higher education institutions and future students will have to face certain difficulties during the transition period. With the introduction of the new education system, it is very important to make the right choice of the form and program of education: how long you are ready to study, whether you want to get a higher education or you need a bachelor’s degree, maybe you need a complete higher education - a master’s program, or you want to be sure to go to graduate school. By answering these questions for yourself, you can decide where to start - college or undergraduate, and how to graduate - master's or graduate school.

Why did you come up with a magistracy?

The master is the highest level of professional education, the second stage after undergraduate studies. Studying in the magistracy, you can supplement the basic education and get a master's degree in another specialty or field of study. The main advantage of the magistracy is the acquisition of professional experience, gaining practical knowledge, a deep understanding of practical problems. In addition, in the master's program you can get experience in research work.

In addition to prestige, studying for a master's degree is also an objective necessity for building a successful career, especially in such areas as management, economics, political science, sociology, jurisprudence, ecology and nature management. In February 2011, by the order of the Federal Service for Supervision of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the MNEPU Academy was given the right to conduct educational activities in these areas of training for masters.

Master's programs can be divided into educational programs - they contain a course of lectures and seminars with subsequent protection of the final work, and research programs - here students under the supervision of a teacher conduct independent research in the area of interest. In full-time education, the duration of study is 2 years, in correspondence - 3 years.

After graduating from a magistracy, you can continue to study in graduate school, where studies in Russian universities last for 3 years, with part-time studies - 4 years. Postgraduate study is a form of advanced training, the main purpose of which is to prepare for the degree of candidate of sciences. The result of postgraduate studies is the defense of the candidate dissertation, after which the postgraduate student is awarded the degree of candidate of science and he can continue to study in doctoral studies. Graduate school is the starting point for those who want to devote their work to science.

In graduate school, the ability to organize and implement a project, find and establish contacts in the professional field is acquired. When studying in graduate school, you have the opportunity to accumulate social capital.

Graduate studies can be successfully combined with current work if you have good self-organization skills. Such an opportunity is provided by job seeking and correspondence postgraduate study.

Graduate school becomes attractive

University graduates oriented towards rapid career growth often question the feasibility of further studies in graduate school. Postgraduate studies are usually associated with time, intellectual and financial costs. At the same time, the practical benefits and prospects for life in the learning process and after graduation are quite vague. Now, in the process of integrating Russian higher education into the European space, graduate school is becoming increasingly attractive.

New connections, fame, money

Experts from partner organizations of domestic and foreign, leading professors from universities in the USA and Europe are becoming increasingly involved in the educational process. Graduate students now have more and more opportunities to apply for scholarships and grants, take part in international conferences, take internships in other countries, establish new contacts and find new contacts. Scholarships and grants are currently of impressive size. However, only students, researchers and graduate students studying in official organizations can take part in competitions for their receipt.

Graduate School or Second Higher Education

A real alternative to a second higher education may be graduate school. For example, you already have a university degree in psychology or philology, but you want to become a professional in some other field. Postgraduate professional education today can be obtained at the graduate school of the Academy of MNEPU. You can study in the priority areas of science today: economics, political science, law, ecology, geoecology.

Career prospects

Today it is believed that the presence of a candidate’s degree does not in any way increase the rating of the applicant for a vacancy in the eyes of the employer. In reality, this is not so. Having a degree is the key to a successful career for a public servant. In the distribution of posts in the legislative, executive and judicial branches, the fact of having a degree is still taken into account. First of all, when it comes to key positions.

A good motivation for learning is a paid graduate school. This will be your informed choice, therefore, your attitude to study is more serious. Often graduate students of a budget graduate school as a result throw it from fatigue, disappointment, or simply laziness. If you invested your own money in graduate school, then this will be additional insurance to abandon studies ahead of time. And the more of your own resources you invest in training, the more difficult it will be for you to abandon the final defense of the dissertation. Investments and efforts should not be wasted.

Graduate School

How old is graduate school? This is one of the most pressing issues for many students who are serious about getting a serious education. It often happens that parents plan: “The child will graduate from college, then university, graduate school, how many years to study at it? ... "

It should be noted that the duration of postgraduate studies is 3 years. However, deviations are possible.

In addition, in case of illness or pregnancy (if there is documentary evidence), the graduate student is entitled to free academic leave, but not more than one year. Such leave, at the request of the student, can be taken by the head of the graduate school and approved by the dean. And only in exceptional cases (again, if there are documents confirming such a case), academic leave for a year can be granted repeatedly. Well, and if you are a genius, then it will not be difficult for you to write and defend a doctoral dissertation in six months. In this case, your postgraduate studies will be completed in such a short time.

About Graduate School

Postgraduate study is full-time and part-time and is a form of postgraduate education. The purpose of the training is to educate scientific personnel who can conduct research and scientific work, set themselves and solve urgent problems, perceive achievements in the field of science adequately, be able to conduct teaching activities, transfer their knowledge to students and the scientific community.

The postgraduate program consists of academic work with students, studying various disciplines, passing exams, defending a dissertation, independent work on research on a dissertation. At the end of each year of study, graduate students undergo certification at the department to confirm the implementation of the curriculum.

First year

At most, 3 weeks after enrollment, the graduate student draws up an individual curriculum with his supervisor and approves it with the head of the department. In this plan, all the stages of training are painted - from attending classes, to participating in the educational process, research work and passing the candidate minimum.

Participation in the educational process provides for seminars and laboratory work, work in the selection committee, practice management and much more. In the first year, the topic of the dissertation is approved. A scientific article is being prepared; obligatory moment - participation in at least two scientific conferences, the results of which are published reports and theses, the first chapter of the dissertation is being prepared.

Second year

Fully dedicated to gaining practical and theoretical knowledge. On their basis, the main text of the dissertation is being prepared. Also, the graduate student independently prepares to pass the candidate minimum in the discipline of specialization and passes the exam. In case of successful delivery, receives the so-called "Certificate". This certificate, unlike the minimum, has an expiration date of three years.

According to the plan of academic work, it is necessary to prepare at least one scientific article based on the results of the study (on the topic of the dissertation). It is important to participate in at least two conferences, publish abstracts, prepare abstracts and the second and third chapters of the dissertation, as well as, necessarily, a conclusion. In accordance with the curriculum, it is necessary to participate in the research department.

Third year

The final stage at which it is necessary to bring the thesis in proper form. The results of the study are processed, the tasks and goals are formulated, scientific positions and their reliability, novelty, practical, theoretical value, the results of the testing are given, the list of literary sources is specified; the conclusion, introduction is written and the text and appendices to the dissertation are made out.

According to the results, an abstract is being prepared. Up to three scientific articles are published (list of Higher Attestation Commission). The dissertation is being prepared for consideration at the department. Then - pre-defense, after which the text is adjusted and documents are prepared for submission to the Dissertation Council. In the third year, the graduate student is not exempted from the academic load and participation in the research work of the department, therefore his schedule is extremely stressful, saturated.

Graduate school - what is it? Postgraduate studies: features

Successful completion of a magistracy is not a reason to stop there. Many students prefer the transition to the next step of the educational ladder called "graduate school." For someone, obtaining a degree seems to be pointless. However, for those who want to study the chosen profession from all sides and fully devote themselves to it, graduate school is a breath of air. It provides an opportunity not only to engage in science, but also to expand the horizons of your future.

What is graduate school?

If higher education in the classical sense involves students attending lectures and other types of classes during which they gain knowledge, then the situation is different with graduate school. Here you will no longer be able to skip pairs or pass exams automatically for the top three. The ultimate goal of training in this case is to get a student a Ph.D. degree, which is earned by hard work.

Therefore, we can say that graduate school is in a sense an independent form of education, since it implies to a greater extent the work of a student under the guidance of a teacher. In the end, to achieve the desired results, the young specialist is engaged in his own research. According to its results, he writes a scientific or so-called candidate's work. In the process of developing a project, a student learns not only to absorb information, but also to analyze it according to various criteria.

Graduate School Forms

Masters planning to connect their lives with science need to know that this can be done under various conditions. So, postgraduate studies are allowed in three forms:

Immediately it is worth highlighting the most preferred option for future candidates of science. Of course, this is an extramural form of education, because it allows you to combine education with work. Moreover, in most cases, graduate school is a paid education, so you can not do without regular income.

Full-time study is suitable for those students who seriously intend to engage in scientific or, possibly, even teaching. It will allow more time to devote to research work and consultations with the project manager, while graduate school in absentia noticeably limits these opportunities. However, if you suddenly decide to get a job, you will have to transfer to another form.

The final type of study for graduate students is job seeking. In order to receive education in this way, you do not need to take entrance exams and regularly attend a university. A student attaches to a particular department with the ability to independently write a dissertation and pass exams.

Learning Features

Obtaining a Ph.D. degree occurs after 3 years of research work of a graduate student, if he is listed on a full-time basis. For extramural students, the duration of the educational process increases by a year.

In addition, postgraduate studies should be accompanied not only by research, but also by teaching. The young specialist is obliged to conduct regular lectures with a total duration of about 50 academic hours per year. This figure may vary depending on the requirements of the university.

As for the direct writing of the candidate work, it begins with the selection by the graduate student of a relevant topic. Then the student undertakes to study the theories of other scientists, conducts his own experiment and, based on the results obtained, makes a unique conclusion.

Since graduate school is primarily an educational process, a young specialist must undergo certification testing of his knowledge in the form of passing three candidate minimums.

Several advantages of obtaining a degree

In most cases, young people are in a hurry to end their studies and, after graduating from a magistracy, begin life in workdays. And indeed, for many, simply not of interest to research work. However, admission to graduate school has its undeniable advantages:

 • The prospect of obtaining a prestigious high-paying position.
 • Deferment from the army for males. True, this has its own nuances: postgraduate study in the correspondence department does not protect from fulfilling a civic duty, a student must be registered on a full-time basis.
 • The opportunity to participate in closed scientific experiments.
 • The right to a vacation, after which you can again be restored to the position of graduate student.

Admission to graduate school

Not every student can engage in scientific work on the basis of a chosen university. The applicant must have previously received the education of a master or specialist. The following introductory postgraduate courses are submitted to them:

 • Philosophy.
 • Foreign language (usually English).
 • Profile subject in the chosen specialty.

In addition, the applicant must write a statement addressed to the rector and obtain the agreement of the supervisor. If there is one, an applicant can provide scientific work on a topic related to the specialty of the department. If the student plans to study in the correspondence department, he needs to show the commission an extract from the work book.

Cost of education

Of course, having entered the desired postgraduate school and taking a budget place, you can not worry about additional costs. But sometimes free training becomes just a dream. The student could be worried about the entrance exams, or simply there was a very big competition among applicants. Well, some faculties do not provide budget places for training at all. Then you have to look for the right amount. What is it within?

According to official estimates, the cost of training for graduate students in Russia ranges from 55 to 350 thousand rubles a year. The size of the monetary value for obtaining a degree depends on the policy of the university and the region in which it is located. In any case, the amount is considerable, but it provides the student with education, so these costs are clearly worth it.

As you already understood, graduate school is a means of developing modern science. After all, today's student tomorrow can become a professor and give the world a discovery that will shock him.

Graduate studies are followed by graduate school - the choice of those who feel within themselves a craving for scientific knowledge. The timing of graduate students varies depending on the choice of form of study. Full-time students come to defend a thesis after 3 years, external students prepare for a year longer.

What work needs to be done throughout the training

There are no laws on the time limits for the defense of dissertation work. It can be both the first serious application of a young scientist, and the work of his whole life. But for the period of the graduate student’s studies, strict requirements are made.

To get to the postgraduate level of higher education in graduate school is possible only subject to 2 conditions.

 • Passing the first stages of training with a high score (the university determines it independently).
 • Successful passing of tests (specialized subject, philosophy / history of science, foreign language).

The passing grade is determined by the university. For those who did not find themselves among graduate students, a "workaround" is open - an applicant for a scientific degree. The latter must pass the candidate exams and attach for a maximum of 6 months to the institution.

The practice of training future scientists / educators involves a huge layer of independent work. For 3-4 years of study, a student must:

 • Engage in the creation / promotion of copyright / co-author scientific works. Registration of patents, development of copyright projects, generation of research reports are welcome.
 • Publish articles. The minimum set of publications was determined (from 4 from the list of Higher Attestation Commission, from 3 from the RSCI index). It is advisable to expand it with articles of scientific journals, newspapers, catalogs not indexed by the RSCI, outside the list of HAC.
 • Speaking at conferences about your own research. The active participation in such events largely determines the prospects for further research practice.
 • Conduct practical, laboratory classes for students, give lectures. Full-time graduate students pass the pedagogical exam.
 • Pass candidate exams, pass intermediate certification.
 • Attend classes (in our university they are held in the evening to conveniently combine work with study).
 • Collect material (empirical, scientific, theoretical) of a future dissertation.

What stage of education is graduate school

The standard program of the Bologna system assigns postgraduate studies the third level of education after undergraduate and graduate programs. But there are clarifications related to the relatively recent transition to an international professional training program.

So, bachelors cannot become graduate students without a master's diploma, and graduates of the specialty can. For the latter, this is the second step. Students who have completed postgraduate studies have the right to re-enter as applicants (this is the second highest or 4th level).

What degree is assigned to the graduate of graduate school

Unlike bachelors, specialists, undergraduates, graduate students do not receive a qualification diploma. They are awarded the degree of candidate of sciences. It gives the right to carry out pedagogical activities, take part in joint scientific work, apply for state support in conducting research.

Is further training possible

The status of a candidate of sciences is a “pass” to doctoral studies. It is the next stage in the training of scientists and is available only to holders of a graduate diploma / specialist who have successfully passed candidate exams and defended a dissertation before the commission.

Doctoral studies, like graduate studies, are the level of postgraduate postgraduate advanced training. It ends with a doctoral dissertation, the assignment of a doctorate.

What is the deadline for admission to graduate school in 2019?

This academic year, it will be possible to submit a package of documents for admission in 2 waves:

 • 1 wave of reception of documents: December 3, 2018 - March 14, 2019
 • 2nd wave of reception of documents: August 1 - September 13, 2019

Important! In the event that all budget places in the competition are filled during the first wave, the second wave will not take place!

Are there any budget places in the HSE postgraduate study?

All places at the HSE graduate school are budgetary. The number of budget places allocated for this year can be found.

How many contests (directions) can I apply for?

In one wave, you can simultaneously apply for several destinations on the same campus or in several campuses. In this case, you must specify the priority for enrollment direction.

Please note that if the applicant has not passed the competition in the first wave, he cannot submit documents for the same direction in the second wave. In this case, you can participate in a competition for another direction (on the same campus) or in a competition for the same direction, but on a different campus.

Who is budgeted? Are there any restrictions besides successfully passed exams?

Accept all who have successfully passed the exams and scored a passing score. There are no other restrictions.

Is it possible to file documents in several directions in the same wavelength?

According to the 2019 Admission Rules, an applicant has the right to submit documents in several areas. But you need to evaluate the additional risks and costs when submitting documents in several directions in one wave:

a) for each competition you need to provide a full package of documents;

b) entrance examinations are submitted as many times as sets of documents have been submitted;

c) if the applicant does not enter the first wave, he is deprived of the opportunity to apply for the same direction on the same campus as part of the second wave

Can I enter graduate school if I have not finished my studies and I do not yet have a specialist / master's diploma?

If you finish the previous stage of study this year - yes it is possible. Applicants can apply and participate in entrance examinations and without a diploma! The only condition: by the time enrollment in postgraduate studies, an applicant must provide a diploma of higher education (master or specialist). Dates of providing the original diploma: for the 1st wave - until 6:00 p.m. July 31, for the 2nd wave - until 6:00 p.m. October 25 (Moscow time).

Are there any graduate studies at HSE regional campuses?

Documents sent by mail are accepted upon receipt of them no later than: for the first wave - March 14, for the second wave - September 13.

The applicant must notify the Admissions Committee of the sending of documents by e-mail: (- for Moscow, [email protected] - for Nizhny Novgorod, [email protected] - for St. Petersburg).

How are entrance exams?

For admission to graduate school, you must successfully pass the entrance exams:

 • special discipline (specialty) - 100-point assessment
 • foreign language to choose from (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian) - 50-point rating

In addition, a certain number of points can be obtained for individual achievements. The list of entrance test programs for all graduate schools (including the criteria for scoring points for individual achievements for each program) can be found.

As the entrance exam in a foreign language, international language certificates are counted (in the 2018/19 academic year, certificates in English, French or German are accepted, a table for translating certificate points into examination points can be found in paragraph 4.11). In addition, the successful completion of master's programs in foreign languages may be a condition for obtaining the maximum score for a foreign language exam.

What is the passing score?

We do not set the number of points in advance, by which you are guaranteed to enter graduate school - the participants form the competition. But there is a number of points below which you can’t score: 30 in the specialty and 15 in the foreign language. By typing below at least one of these thresholds, you are automatically eliminated from the competition.

In what cases will my documents not be accepted?

If you provided an incomplete set, you did not submit the documents on time, or if it turned out that at least one of the documents you submitted was not genuine.

I am a foreign citizen. Should I choose quota selection or submission of documents in the general competition?

You have the right to participate in both competitions, they are not dependent on each other. Just remember that in this case you need at least two complete sets of documents (or more if you are participating in a competition for several programs).

What are the conditions for admission to graduate school for citizens of the CIS?

Graduate Schools

The system of graduate schools was introduced at the HSE in 2013.

A postgraduate school is a community of postgraduate students, scientific advisers from various departments, departments, research centers, laboratories, and branches of the Higher School of Economics in one direction of postgraduate training.

The task of the graduate school is to supervise the learning process of the graduate student from admission to defending his dissertation.

Each postgraduate school is headed.

The postgraduate school provides work.

scientific adviser

The supervisor of studies may be an employee of the HSE who has the degree of Doctor of Science, PhD or PhD.

How to find a supervisor

Step 1. Decide on the topic of future dissertation research

The subject can be changed during the work on the dissertation. Initially, the topic can be formulated taking into account the accumulated materials that you already have in the form of thesis, publications, etc.

For HSE graduates planning to continue cooperation with the former supervisor (after a master's degree, specialty), the easiest way is to choose the scientific problems that the department (department, institute, laboratory) conducts academic and scientific work on, where your supervisor works.

If you have not studied before at the HSE, you can choose the direction of scientific research, taking into account your previous education and the subject of a future dissertation. Look at the passport of the specialty, the program of entrance exams (for each specialty / specialization - a separate program). With clarification of the circle of your scientific interests, consideration of your portfolio of applicants, selection of a supervisor, you will be helped in the postgraduate school of the corresponding direction of preparation.

Step 2 Decide on the supervisor, post-graduate school, educational or scientific unit that conduct academic and scientific work on your chosen issues

1. On the pages of post-graduate schools you will find information on what areas and profiles the post-graduate school prepares graduate students, as well as recommended academic advisors.

Training

What academic opportunities do graduate students at HSE have?

Graduate students have the opportunity to attend lecture courses aimed at developing academic skills (skills in organizing and conducting research, writing academic articles, preparing presentations)

Graduate students are given a unique opportunity of free access to relevant resources of the HSE electronic library, which includes a database of domestic and foreign periodicals and electronic books, a database of foreign dissertations, scientific citation indexes, and publications and statistical resources, and.

Graduate students take an active part in international conferences and seminars. HSE finances foreign internships for young scientists.

In addition to state scholarships, graduate students have the opportunity to receive financial support by participating in the work of scientific laboratories; receive scientific grants and scholarships.

In the fall of 2010, the Higher School of Economics program was launched at the Higher School of Economics. The structure of the program “Academic postgraduate study” corresponds to PhD programs, with a strong teaching component, compulsory internship at a Western university in the learning process, co-management by foreign researchers, HSE employees who received a PhD degree. The scholarship to graduate students studying under this program is 30 thousand rubles per month.

Is there an opportunity to work and study in graduate school?

There is an opportunity. Full-time employment is mandatory for graduate students of the Academic Graduate School program. Other graduate students may vary their “employment” in graduate school.

Postgraduate "employment" consists of attending training courses (while they are held 2-3 times a week, mainly in the evening), attendance at meetings of departments and scientific departments (on average 1 time per month) to approve the topic, certification, and intermediate speeches with work results. You will also have to allocate time for pedagogical practice (ped. Practice means not only conducting student seminars, but also participating in the preparation of teaching materials, readers, assistance in conducting scientific events: conferences, seminars, etc.).

In addition, the graduate student needs to plan time for visiting various scientific events: scientific seminars of departments, scientific departments (information about them can be found on the pages of departments and scientific departments, http://www.hse.ru/education/, http: // www. hse.ru/science/centers, https://www.hse.ru/ru/interlabs/).

Also, there are activities that will be useful to the graduate student directly to write a dissertation and to obtain "related" information, for example, about grants, potential internship places, etc.: http://www.hse.ru/science/scifund/ travel

Given the remote access to the electronic resources of the library, there is the possibility of flexible planning of time for working with literature.

Graduate students have the opportunity to earn money without leaving the HSE. So, in addition to teaching (paid) activities at the department, you can connect to scientific projects implemented at the university (as an employee of a research unit, international laboratories, scientific and educational laboratories).

What are the deduction criteria?

A graduate student may be expelled from graduate school if he has not passed certification. Certification is carried out 2 times a year: in May-June (interim certification) and in October (final certification). The certification takes into account the implementation of the total amount of work required for this period of study. The criteria for certification are contained in the Procedure for the preparation of graduate students. (clause 2.2.2)

Hostel

Is there a hostel and what are the conditions for its provision?

The hostel is provided to all nonresident graduate students living from Moscow further than 8 railway zones.

You can see which railway zone your place of residence belongs to by choosing the direction of the railway corresponding to your place of residence.

The cost of living for full-time graduate students can be found here. For postgraduate part-time students, a hostel is not provided.

Grants, scholarships, internships

In which foreign universities can internships be possible?

An agreement has recently been concluded with the Bremen Graduate School (information will soon be available on the website). By the way, for graduate students enrolled in the program "Academic postgraduate study", foreign research internships are a mandatory part of the curriculum.

Are there any joint graduate schools? What is the average number of graduate students able to pass it? What additional documents are needed for its passage?

HSE has double degree programs. For participation conditions, see here http://www.hse.ru/org/hse/aspirant/phd. Also, an agreement on a PhD level double degree program is being prepared with the University of Technology Eindhoven (Holland).
