So, a list of fascinating books that will interest both "avid readers" and beginner "book lovers":

"Come in," Narine Abgaryan

This is a tragicomedy about a young and ambitious girl who in the early difficult 90s decided to leave her native small mountain republic and conquer the capital. And she immediately realized that each visitor, whom the author calls “come in large numbers”, has his own Moscow. Someone sees her in millions of people scurrying along the streets, and someone gets the opportunity to get close to such people. And some of them protect, protect, care, help, support and just love. The author of the book talks about his small piece of the same "come in large numbers" of the visitor’s life, which many of the indigenous inhabitants of big cities do not know about. And there is a place in it for exploits, the most important of which is to decide to emigrate and take a new place as it is, and sincerely love it. And then Moscow will certainly reciprocate.

The Collector, John Fowles

This is the author’s debut story, and many of her practically freeze blood, because this is a real psychological thriller that excites the mind. The plot is the fate of two people, interconnected. He is a butterfly collector. There is a void in his soul, which he seeks to fill with beauty. And one day Ferdinand finds himself a wonderful victim - the girl Miranda. It is as if created in order to create and enjoy freedom. And he understands that he will give everything to possess it. And so, Miranda becomes a captive of Ferdinand. But can he keep the real Life, Beauty, Freedom and all the most beautiful that can be in the human soul in the walls of the castle?

The story is built on the subtle relationship of the victim and the villain and allows you to rethink many of the plots of world classics that seemed long-traveled.

Forrest Gump, Winston Groom

This is the story of a mentally retarded guy, which he himself outlined on the pages of the legendary book that formed the basis of the film of the same name. The plot can be called almost the embodiment of the myth of the same "American dream" that worried the minds of millions of young people who lived in the second half of the last century. But at the same time, this is a sharp and even slightly cruel satirical parody of the society of that time, which was not ready to accept people who were somewhat different from the mainstream. Forrest Gump was different, and therefore became the object of ridicule. But this boy is not a madman at all. He is different, and that which others cannot see and feel is available to him. He is special.

Amsterdam, Ian McEwan

The author of the book is one of the representatives of the "elite" of modern British prose. And for the work that has become a real world bestseller, he received the Booker Prize. Victor Golyshev, who translated this creation into Russian, also bothered the awards. It would seem that the story is simple and very relevant. But how many nuances are there, how many thoughts, how many doubts! The main characters are two friends. One of them is a successful editor of a popular newspaper. The second is the brilliant composer of our time, who is engaged in writing the "Symphony of the Millennium." And they conclude an agreement on euthanasia, under the terms of which, if one falls into a state of unconsciousness and ceases to understand what he is doing, the other will take his life.

Amendment 22, Joseph Heller

Although more than half a century has passed since the release of the first book, this work is still legendary and one of the most popular, and many publications have included it in the list of best novels.

This is not an ordinary story about US Air Force pilots who took part in World War II. All of them fall into absurd situations, encounter awkward people and rash actions, they themselves commit incomprehensible acts. And all this is connected with a certain amendment No. 22, which actually does not exist on paper, but states that every military man who does not want to carry out a combat mission is quite normal and therefore fit for service. But in fact, in this story you can see not so much an antiwar novel as a deep and global mockery of modern everyday life, of society and existing laws.

"Muttons Conspiracy," John Kennedy Tool

The author of this book, who, by the way, lived to see the Pulitzer Prize awarded for this creation, was able to create a literary hero, unlike any described in satirical literature. Ignatius J. Riley is a creative, creative and eccentric person. He imagines himself to be an intellectual, but in reality he is a glutton, a moot and a loafer. It is similar to the modern Don Quixote or Gargantua, who despises society for the lack of geometry and theology. It reminds Thomas Aquinas, who began his own hopeless war against everything and everyone: representatives of non-traditional sexual orientation, excesses of the century and even intercity buses. And this image is so interesting, unusual and, unfortunately, relevant that everyone will be able to see a part of themselves in it.

“Monday begins on Saturday,” the Strugatsky Brothers

This book is a real masterpiece of Russian science fiction, a kind of embodiment of the utopia of the Soviet era, a kind of artistic fulfillment of a dream about the possibilities of a modern person to learn, create, learn and solve the mysteries of the Universe.

The main characters of the book are employees of NIICHAVO (Scientific Research Institute of Witchcraft and Wizardry). They are masters and magicians, true discoverers. And they will encounter many amazing events and phenomena: a time machine, a hut on chicken legs, a genie, and even a man-made man!

The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins

This book has become a real bestseller. This is a mysterious and fascinating story of the girl Rachel, who, from the window of the train, watches, as she thinks, ideal spouses. She even gave them names: Jason and Jess. Every day she sees the cottage of a man and a woman and understands that they probably have everything: prosperity, happiness, wealth and love. And all this was with Rachel, but not so long ago she lost all this. But one day, while approaching a well-known cottage, a girl realizes that something is going wrong. She sees frightening, mysterious and disturbing her consciousness events. And after that, Jess's perfect wife disappears. And Rachel realizes that it is she who must reveal this secret and find a woman. But will the police take her seriously? And, in general, is it worth it to interfere in someone else's life? This remains to be seen by readers.

Book of Life: Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Album

In the last months of his life, the old professor managed to make several important discoveries.

He understood that death was not the end. This is the beginning. And, therefore, to die is the same as preparing for something unknown and new. And this is not at all scary, but even interesting.

Before leaving for another world, the old man transmitted such knowledge to everyone who was with him in the last minutes of his earthly life. What's next? Will we find out?

The Process, Franz Kafka

The author is one of the most beloved, mysterious, readable and popular writers of the last century. He managed to create a unique artistic Universe, in which everything is completely different from what it is in real life. She is sad, dreary and almost absurd, but incredible and bewitchingly beautiful. Her characters constantly become participants in strange adventures, they seek the meaning of life and try to get answers to questions that have long tormented them. The novel "Process" is the work that will most clearly understand the mysterious nature of the work of Franz Kafka.

Lord of the Flies, William Golding

This book can be called strange, scary and incredibly attractive.

In the story, the boys brought up in the best traditions find themselves on a desert island. The author told the readers a philosophical parable about how fragile the world is and what can happen to people who have forgotten about kindness, love and mercy. This is an anti-utopia with a certain symbolic connotation, which explores the behavior of children who find themselves in wartime on an uninhabited island. Will they be able to maintain humanity or submit to natural instincts?

“Rita Hayworth, or the Shawshank Redemption,” Stephen King

The plot of this book is the story of a man whose terrible dream suddenly became a reality. He, in no way innocent, was thrown into prison, into real hell, in which he will spend the rest of his life. And from this terrible place no one has managed to get out yet. But the main character does not intend to give up and put up with what fate was destined for him. He took a desperate step. But can he not only escape, but also get used to freedom and the new world, survive in it? By the way, this work of the real fantasy king Stephen King served as the basis for the film of the same name, in which Morgan Freeman and Tim Robinson starred.

Events unfold in England in 1960. Jennifer Sterling wakes up after a terrible car accident and realizes that she can’t remember who she is, what happened to her. She does not remember her husband. She would have continued to live in ignorance if she had not accidentally found letters addressed to her and signed with the letter “B”. Their author confessed to Jennifer in love and persuaded her to leave her husband. Further, the author takes readers to the 21st century. Ellie, a young reporter in the newspaper’s archive, finds one of the letters written by the enigmatic “B”. She hopes that, taking up the investigation, she will be able to unravel the secret of the author and the recipient of the messages, restore her reputation and even figure out her own personal life.

"A lady with glasses with a gun in the car," Sebastien Japrizo

The main character of the book is the blonde. She is beautiful, sentimental, sincere, deceitful, restless, stubborn and stupid. This lady, who has never seen the sea, gets into a car and tries to escape from the police. At the same time, she constantly repeats to herself that she is not crazy.

But others do not agree with this. The heroine behaves more than strange and constantly gets into ridiculous situations. She believes that anywhere she finds herself can be harmed. But if she escapes, she can remain alone with herself and free herself from what is hiding, from what worries her so much.

The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt

The author wrote this book for ten whole years, but it has become a real masterpiece. It tells us that art has power and power, and sometimes it can radically change and literally turn our lives around, and all of a sudden.

The hero of the work, 13-year-old boy Theo Decker, by some miracle, survived after the explosion, due to which his mother died. His father left him, and he is forced to wander around foster families and completely alien homes. He traveled to Las Vegas and New York and almost despaired. But his only consolation, which, by the way, almost led to his death, is a masterpiece of the Dutch old master, stolen from the museum by him.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

This book looks like a complex mirror labyrinth, in which, it would seem, completely different and in no way connected stories overlap, intersect and overlap each other.

There are six main characters in the work: a young composer, compelled to trade in soul and body; notary of the XIX century; a journalist who reveals the plot of a large company working in California in the 70s of the last century; a clone maid working in a modern fast-food enterprise; a modern small publisher and a simple goat security, living at the dawn of civilization.

1984, George Orwell

This work can be attributed to the dystopian genre, it describes a society in which a tough totalitarian regime reigns.

There is nothing worse than the conclusion of free and living minds in the shackles of social foundations.

Blackberry Winter by Sarah Gio

Events unfold in 1933 in Seattle. Vera Ray kisses her little son before bedtime and goes to a hotel for night work. In the morning, a single mother discovers that the whole city is covered with snow, and her son has disappeared. In a snowdrift near the house, Vera finds the boy’s favorite toy, but there are no signs nearby. A desperate mother is ready for anything to find her child.

The author then brings readers to modern Seattle. Reporter Claire Aldridge writes an article about a blizzard that literally paralyzed the city. By chance, she finds out that similar events already happened 80 years ago. Having begun to study the mysterious story of Vera Ray, Claire realizes that she is somehow mysteriously intertwined with her own life.

Blindness by Jose Saramago

Residents of a nameless country and a nameless city are facing a strange epidemic. All of them are rapidly starting to go blind. And the authorities, in order to stop this incomprehensible disease, decide to impose strict quarantine and relocate all the sick to the old hospital, imprisoning them.

The main characters of the work are the infected eye doctor and his pretending blind spouse. They are trying to gather the world bit by bit and find order in this chaos that gradually covers all.

“Three apples fell from the sky”, Narine Abgaryan

This book is the story of a small village located somewhere high in the mountains.

Its inhabitants are all a little grunts, a little bit eccentric, but at the same time in each of them are hidden real treasures of the spirit.

This is a witty, sublime and unusual dystopia about the modern consumer society, which is programmed at the genetic level. And in this world the sad story of Savage unfolds, which the author regards as Hamlet of modern times. It still retains the remnants of humanity, but people divided into castes of public consumption do not want to recognize it or simply cannot do it.

If we list noteworthy books by contemporary authors, then we can not help but mention the work “The Ark” social network of Evgeny Wetselwhich consists of three parts.

The main character falls from the roof, but is reborn again. Having lived a little in the XI century, he finds himself in the distant future - in the XXXVI century in Moscow. The author touches on many interesting devices, methods of psychology and sales, modern thoughts about life and reasons to seriously think about rhetorical issues. The second book describes life in America and the theory of one of the options for a worldwide conspiracy. And in the third part tells about the adventures of the hero on another planet on which white angels live.

These were the most interesting books that should be read even by those who consider that they do not like to read. They will turn your views and even ideas about the world.

P.S. And which books do you most remember?

Not all books are able to captivate the reader from the first pages and keep them in suspense and ignorance to the very end. But these 10 books will definitely not let you tear yourself away from reading for a couple of minutes. They can be "swallowed" literally in their entirety and until the very last line the reader will be in tension and ignorance.

Reader interest

Mostly people read for their pleasure. There are some exceptions, such as reading special technical literature or textbooks, but we will not talk about this. The most successful books are those that keep the reader interested in the very last pages.

A arouse interest  here are such moments in literature:

  • Heroes' sophistication. An important aspect of fiction. It is interesting to read when you worry about the heroes and imagine yourself in their place. The more the character’s character is like a real person, the better.
  • Colorful descriptions. When the environment in the work is described in too much detail, it can harm perception. Here the balance is important. But the details and small details at the right time can be very cool for hooking readers.
  • Story line. A well-designed and planned storyline can pull a book into the ranks of best-sellers even with bad characters.

The cultural significance of reading books

The value of literature  so much compared to other cultural phenomena that their works are studied throughout the entire period of an individual’s education, from kindergarten to university.

Neither cinema, nor animation, nor architecture, nor art, nor even music can be compared. Some of these phenomena in passing, of course, take place in a comprehensive school. Specialized universities are studying their aspect in more detail, but we are not talking about them. This state of affairs clearly indicates that   reading is the foundation of personality development.

What kind of literature

Such ancient art developed into a very versatile phenomenon. Consider the most main directions:

  • Historical  - annals, magazines, chronicles. These are all documents confirming some events in the past.
  • Documentary  - a description of some events that actually happened.
  • Art  - a description of the events fictitious in part or in full.
  • Academic - Encyclopedias textbooks, manuals, guidelines.
  • Legal  - Constitution, bills, rules, charters.

  1. Orson Scott Card - The Ender Game . The brightest representative of combat fiction. The book tells about the fate of the ingenious boy Andrew Wiggin, who was brought up in post-war society as a future commander. According to the book, the film of the same name was filmed in 2013.
  2. Gordon James - “Why Don't We Fall Through the Floor” . The book is for those who love physics and technology. Although it contains large amounts of scientific information, it is read as artistic. Describes the events of the Second World War from the perspective of materials science. Very easy syllable and distinct descriptions. Changes all ideas about surrounding objects.
  3. Evgeny Zamyatin - “We” . Popular fantastic dystopia. The main character is one of the many inhabitants of the State, which is separated by a wall from the outside world. All citizens are so standardized that their names are reduced to one letter, and almost complete equality reigns in society and there is no free will.
  4. Yuri Alkin - “The Price of Knowledge” . An art book that examines the philosophical side of immortality and the causes of aging. The main character falls into a secret social experiment related to immortality. It will be interesting for those who like to think about what they read.
  5. Joan C. Rowling - Harry Potter . World best seller. A series of novels telling about the fate of a wizard boy. Films and computer games were made for each of the books. This book is about heroism, friendship, good and evil. Teenagers will be especially interesting, but do not underestimate it. These novels are also read with pleasure by adults.
  6. John Ronald Roel Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings . Fantasy narrative of the adventures of the hobbit Bilbo. Films were shot on these subjects and there is a whole culture. People from all over the world come together to participate in joint events dedicated to the author or the plot of the novel.

  8. Dave Walverton - "On the Way to Paradise" . A novel in the genre of adventure fantasy and cyberpunk. Extremely eventful and dynamic. Raises issues of the private territory of the individual, the meaning of certain memories and morality. Especially like the connoisseurs of Isaac Aizimov and Stanislav Lem.

The list goes on and on, for over a thousand-year history of literature, many masterpieces have been written. Therefore, what to read, so as not to tear yourself away from the book, depends entirely on your choice.

Below the video blogger Nastya Skripkina will talk about the best books in her opinion, from which it is simply impossible to break away:

And here Polina Martsinkevich will tell about the most interesting books that she read over the past few years:

Text:  Alexander Bazhenov-Sorokin

Detective is a relatively young genre.  The fruit of the love of realism and Gothic, it arose in the middle of the 19th century, became terribly popular and has not lost ground since then. The rise of the Japanese mystical detective, the highly social psychological thriller from Scandinavia, the American existential thriller and the ongoing tradition of the British detective puzzle clearly demonstrate how varied both in plot and style detective stories can be.

We have chosen eleven detectives published in the zero, which are in no way inferior to such book hits as “Girl on the Train” or “Disappeared”, and will not get lost against the hegemony of modern masters of the genre Dennis Lihan, Yu Nesbø, Henning Mankell and Robert Galbright (hello , Joanne Rowling!).

The Truth About Harry Quebec

Joel Dicker

The sensational debut of twenty-seven-year-old Swiss Dicker about the young popular writer in the creative crisis, the cult novel of his mentor and how novels are created in principle, received mixed reviews at one time. The “truth about the Harry Quebec case” was criticized for allegedly claiming a book of intellectual depth, which is actually not there. Is it so - decide for yourself while reading. What exactly is there, is this famously twisted plot with unexpected twists and the situation in the best traditions of noir: a minor fam-fatal, strange and complex men, black humor and an ever-changing picture of events - is this not a recipe for a great detective?

Sharp objects

Gillian Flynn

American Gillian Flynn became the absolute star of the psychological thriller after the film adaptation of her third novel “Disappeared”, the film was shot by David Fincher, and the script was prepared by the writer herself. Sharp Objects is her debut and deserves no less attention. A journalist with severe psychological problems living in Chicago and looking for a way out of self-harm and alcohol is forced to return to her hometown in Missouri to cover the story of the murder of one girl and the disappearance of another. Southern Gothic, well-written characters, a twisted plot - “Sharp objects” is a clear proof that the success of the writer is not accidental at all. Like the heroine of the book, Gillian Flynn worked for many years as a journalist, which clearly affected her ability to tell stories.

Voice of the Night Bird

Robert McCammon

Robert McCammon is an American master of horror who at one point decided to try himself in a historical detective story. The Voice of the Night Bird action takes place somewhere in Carolina in 1699. The trial of the witch, who allegedly killed her husband and was involved with the devil himself, shakes the town of Fountain Royal, and teenage clerk Matthew Corbett grows up before his eyes and turns into a detective in an attempt to establish the truth and save the woman. Adventures, romance, secrets and conspiracies, plus the history and life of still subordinate Britain to America - an excellent combination for a detective, not without reason the author has already published several books about Corbett.

Judgment Day

Kurt Aust

Scandinavia regularly supplies the world with detective and thriller masters, to recall at least the Norwegian Yu Nesbø and the Danish Peter Hyog. A resident of the Norwegian Horten, Kurt Aust, approached the popular genre from the other side: we have a historical detective story, in which there is almost less from a modern northern detective than from Umberto Eco. The cold New Year's night of 1699 finds several people locked in an inn due to snowfall: among them, Professor Thomas Buberg and his assistant Peter, they have to figure out what happened to the dead count found in the snowdrift. The deliberate deliberation of the narrative and the absence of detective superpowers in the main characters more than pay off with local (and temporary) flavor.

Crimes of the Past

Kate Atkinson

Fans of the BBC eponymous series “Case Histories” know and appreciate the skill of Kate Atkinson, who invented Jackson Brody, a former policeman who turned into private detectives. The first novel of the series made Atkinson a favorite of critics a real icon of a modern detective, whose reading of books is in full propaganda, for example, by Stephen King. The story of three seemingly unconnected family tragedies that Brody is forced to take on is truly gloomy, and you can’t name it easy reading. However, for those who are not afraid of the world of truly unpleasant people and not the fastest development of events, there is an amazing atmosphere, family secrets and a wonderful author's syllable.

Over the settled graves

Jess walter

In the small town of Spokane, Washington, a serial killer hunts for prostitutes, exponentially puts their bodies on the banks of the river, after putting each victim 20 bucks in a fist. “Over the Settled Graves” is the story of an investigation that subtly combines an intriguing and yet plausible consequence and a sophisticated style of high literature. The main character Carolina Maybri suffers from depression, loneliness and wonders about the limits of her own capabilities as a female police officer. Her former mentor and once a failed lover, and now the partner in the case also suffers - due to problems in the family and unrequited love. Their personal tragedies and problems are no less important in the narrative than the detective story and the image of a gradual, dying city that generates nightmares.

Golden scales

Parker Bilal

Makana is a refugee from Sudan, where his wife and daughter died. He lives in Cairo, barely making ends meet and works as a private detective. The hero takes literally any business (because of the difficult financial situation, one does not have to choose), and once an oligarch turns to him for a service with a dark past and no less dangerous present. The first novel in the series about Detective Makan is by no means the debut of the author of British-Sudanese descent, Jamal Mahjub, who recently began to write detective stories under the pseudonym Parker Bilal. The main character of the Golden Scales is not a detective, but the city of Cairo, which, with its implausible life as an oasis in the desert, a dream that turned into a frightening and enchanting reality, reminds Petersburg of Dostoevsky.

Crossing

Ellie griffiths

In the British novels by Ellie Griffiths about forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway, the echo of another popular heroine, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan from the TV series Bones and the underlying American book series Katie Reich, is heard from time to time. However, the similarity does not boil down to bones as evidence: if Reich wrote off the heroine from herself, then Griffiths were inspired by her husband-archaeologist and the countryside of Norfolk, whose aunt introduced the writer to nature and myths. The charm of the British writer’s debut novel consists of a combination of sinister history with ritual murders, the charm of a sad and funny Ruth and fascinating English landscapes.

Thirteen hours

Deon meyer

The detective is not alone in the northern landscapes, and this is brilliantly proved by the South African writer Deon Meyer, telling on Afrikaans exciting stories about the life of the Cape Town Serious Crimes Department. There Inspector Grissel is torn every minute between the prevention of a potential international scandal, the instructions of newcomers to the department and his own problems that need to be addressed immediately. Just one day, together with Inspector Grissel, involves not only a dashing detective story, but also the life of the very special multinational world of South Africa, which I want to learn more and more about with every page.

Collini Case

Ferdinand von Schirach

Ferdinand von Schirach himself could become a wonderful hero of the novel: the grandson of Hitler Youth leader Baldur von Schirach and the great-grandson of an American whose roots go to the signatories of the Declaration of Independence and directly to the first settlers of the New World. The successful forensic lawyer von Schirach began to write stories based on cases from his practice, and quickly became famous as a writer. In the novel The Case of Collini, the author in German insinuatingly and restrainedly poses the question of the difference between justice and justice in the format of a judicial drama. What if you need to protect the admitted killer, and you do not know his motives? No surprises or plot twists, but real food for thought, especially important in the context of global rethinking of one’s identity by any resident of Europe after the Second World War.
