Do-it-yourself folding bed drawings. Do-it-yourself folding bed. Advantages and disadvantages of folding beds

The problem with most modern families is the lack of living space. In small rooms, it is necessary to place a set of furniture necessary for life, and few people think that making a folding bed instead of the usual sofa can significantly save space and increase sleep comfort.

Of course, you can go to the nearest furniture store, but why spend money on something that you can easily collect yourself? A do-it-yourself folding bed is made without any special difficulties, it is enough just to have some experience in handling tools, and components and accessories are sold in construction markets and in specialized stores in large quantities.

Of course, Copperfield is a master at performing tricks, but he is not alone in making large objects disappear. Each owner can feel like a magician and sorcerer by making a folding bed.

First of all, you need to decide on the type of construction. The bed can be vertical or horizontal. The first design is better suited for adults who need more space to sleep comfortably. During the day, it can be masked in a niche or in a special closet. The second design is well suited for children, as it is easier to prepare for sleeping and can take up very little space along the wall while the child is small. Such beds are most often disguised as a shelf, chest of drawers or soft upholstery, on which it is convenient to lean with your back when playing on the floor.

Do you need a bed like this

Like any other piece of furniture, a folding bed has its positive and negative sides. The advantages of the design include: saving space, effort and time of the hostess (in the assembled state, the upholstery collects less dust) and aesthetics (a bulky sleeping place in the assembled form is disguised as a wardrobe or chest of drawers).

The disadvantages include the fact that the bed is difficult to move to another place. The fittings securely fix the box to the wall or floor. It also takes some time and effort to make.

Structural elements

The most important element of any bed is the mattress. It is in order not to torment the back with uncomfortable sofas that they most often start the construction of folding beds. Making a good mattress with your own hands is an impossible task. This element will have to be bought, and it is best to order the orthopedic option from a good manufacturer. It is not worth saving on a mattress, since performance and health depend on a comfortable sleep.

The mattress bed is an element that should be suitable for your height and weight. The fittings must also be matched to the load.

An important element is the folding mechanism. The safety of use and efforts during the assembly and disassembly of the berth depend on its quality. There are several types of folding mechanisms:

  • spring;
  • mechanical;
  • mechanism on gas shock absorbers.

Folding bed making process

Step number 1. Making the box

Depending on the selected type of construction, a box is made for masking the frame. For this, a strong concrete wall should be chosen; no partitions are suitable for such purposes. For the manufacture of the box, chipboard sheets are suitable, for vertical walls - 2.5 cm thick, the horizontal wall can be thinner - 1.5-2 cm thick.

When making drawings of the box, it is necessary to take into account not only the dimensions of the bed, but also the height of the mattress and the thickness of the back.

Step # 2. Frame fabrication

To make the frame, you will need two side boards, a set of lamellas or chipboard sheets for a flat sleeping surface of the headboard. You can fasten the mattress to the bed with strong straps, the rest of the parts are fastened with mounting corners. Frame fabrication accessories are sold in specialized stores. A sample list of frame parts looks like this:

  • longitudinal beams of the required length with a thickness and height of 50 mm - 2 pcs.;
  • cross bars - 2 pcs.;
  • chipboard strips for side walls - 2 pcs.;
  • chipboard strips for transverse walls - 2 pcs.;
  • legs - 2 pcs.;
  • stop for the axis of rotation.

Necessary accessories - dowels, screws, bolts, washers and nuts, aluminum tubes. The use of dowels requires exactly matching drilling of various parts, so sometimes other fittings are used instead of them - metal corners for fastening. A set of these simple devices will allow you to make a high-quality folding bed frame. For stability, the legs are connected with a metal bar, both horizontal and vertical design benefits from this.

It is quite difficult to find non-standard furniture in furniture stores, and individual orders are more expensive, so for many, the best solution is a do-it-yourself folding bed. Usually, the decision to make a folding bed-wardrobe is taken by the owners of small-sized apartments, where every patch of usable area counts. The lifting mechanism, which the transforming furniture is equipped with, allows the bed to be lowered at night, and to put the sleeping place in the closet for the day, freeing up the space that an ordinary bed would occupy day and night. With blueprints, available materials and a standard set of tools, the folding bed is easy to make yourself.

The principle of the device and design options

A wardrobe bed is a transformer consisting of a fixed wall box and a bed (bed) that can be raised and lowered.

More popular are transformers of a vertical design (longitudinal-folding), in which the head of the bed is attached to the walls of the box. They can be one and a half, double, less often single, when folded they imitate a wardrobe.

Cross-folding, or horizontal transforming beds are mainly installed in children's rooms, they are also suitable for adolescents, short people. These are mainly single beds, which fold back sideways, and when folded they imitate a chest of drawers, a shelf. Sometimes horizontal beds are made bunk, like shelves in a reserved seat carriage.

The bed of a vertical bed is usually made in one piece, but sometimes it is equipped with not only head, but also side hinges, and folds in half when retracted into the box. A wardrobe for such a transforming bed needs a deeper one, but its upper part can be taken under the mezzanine for bedding.

On the sides of the box, you can mount shelves designed in the same style, make the folding bed part of the furniture set. Sometimes the bed is raised relative to the floor, and in the lower part of the closet small compartments are made for shoes, a bed with hinged doors or drawers.

A set of materials and tools

The most important element required to make a folding bed is the lifting mechanism. On sale you can find mechanisms with a different principle of action:

  • mechanical;
  • spring;
  • on gas shock absorbers (gas lifts).

The last option is the most modern, with its help the transformer folds and unfolds without unnecessary effort, the movement of the bed is smooth and silent, the bed is securely fixed in the desired position. It is necessary to choose materials for making a bed in such a way that it turns out to be strong enough to withstand the weight of a person (people). At the same time, the folding bed should not be too massive, so as not to create an excessive load on the mechanism.

In addition to the mechanism for making the bed, you will need:

  • a bar with a section of 40x40 and an edged board for the frame;
  • plywood sheets or slats for the bottom of the berth;
  • Chipboard, if the cabinet will be made with a back wall;
  • furniture shields made of laminated chipboard, MDF or solid wood for the sides and backs of the bed, the walls of the box, the front of the cabinet. There are many companies where you can order cutting of material into parts of the required size, as well as process their edges;
  • furniture legs (if the bed rests on them);

To determine the size of the parts, you need to be guided by the size of the mattress. The height of the box should be slightly more than the length of the mattress, the thickness of the front and rear walls of the bed should be added and a gap should be left. The width of the box is made 16 cm wider than the width of the mattress (space is needed to install the lifting mechanism).

The depth of the cabinet-box is usually equal to the height of the mattress + 32 cm. For the frame of the bed, you need to use a bar of such a size that the frame is slightly larger than the mattress, and it freely fits into the finished box. For the sidewalls, front and back walls of the bed, you can take boards, the width of which is equal to the height of the mattress. It will protrude above their edges, since it will lie on the frame and the bottom fixed from above.

You will need strong belts for fastening it, loops for fixing the raised bed, fasteners - self-tapping screws, corners, possibly - dowels, furniture fittings. If you purchase already cut materials, you can do without a jigsaw, a saw, but a drill, screwdriver or screwdriver is necessary, a hammer will come in handy. You will also need tools for measurements and marking - tape measure, square, pencil, long rigid ruler, level. Having decided on the design and location of the bed, as well as preparing the necessary materials and tools, you can start assembling.

Sequence of work

They begin to mount the transformer from the box. For the side panels, a material with a thickness of 25 mm is taken, the top panel can be thinner, from 16 mm. Sometimes the box is assembled without a bottom, but a platform is attached to the floor - a piece of slab of double thickness, on which it will rest. If the bed is large, additional stiffeners are needed inside the box, at least one board installed horizontally closer to the floor, but the back wall is not necessary. Parts can be connected to each other using furniture dowels - wooden cylinders, for which holes of the required diameter are drilled.

On the walls of the box, markings are made for fastening the lifting mechanism. The floor and wall are marked for the installation of the box, holes for fasteners are outlined (fastening step - 25 cm). It should be borne in mind that every time the berth is raised and lowered, a part of the applied force will be directed to the separation of the box from the supporting structure. Therefore, it must be securely fixed, the best wall for this purpose is concrete or brick. Wall mounting is carried out using metal corners and self-tapping screws.

Then the bed is assembled - the frame of the frame is assembled from a bar, if necessary, stiffeners are made inside. The frame is sheathed on the sides with boards or pieces of board, lamellas or a sheet of plywood with ventilation holes made on top of the frame are stuffed. It turns out a box in which the mattress will fit. To the bottom of the frame, you need to attach the details of the bottom of the bed, which will mimic the front of the cabinet. You also need to think about what the outer edge of the stock will rely on. The traditional legs will catch your eye when the fold-out bed is stowed away in the closet. The following solutions are possible:

  • removable or swivel legs;
  • disassembled - support, assembled - hanger, handle, for which you can pull to set the transformer in motion;

  • the transverse panel, which serves as a support, when assembled, looks like a shelf;
  • a trolley box is used as a support.

In the designated places of the box, a lifting mechanism is mounted, its other edge is fixed to the outer edge of the bed in the headboard area. The mattress is put in place and secured with special straps. After assembly, the structure must be tested, check the operation of the gas lift. You need to make sure that the transformation process takes place without distortions, jamming and does not require excessive efforts. It may be necessary to adjust the mechanism, fit parts. You should also check if there is a gap between the support and the floor.

For a small urban apartment, saving space is extremely important, so folding furniture (transformers) is becoming more and more popular. This usually applies to massive pieces of furniture - beds and sofas. It is not always possible to select a separate room for the bedroom, so there is a need to combine such premises as a bedroom and a living room, a bedroom and a nursery. Manufacturers offer a variety of options for such an environment. You can choose beds that differ in size and shape. But it is not always possible to choose what you want. The way out of the situation is to assemble the bed with your own hands.

For those whose apartment size does not allow for large beds or sofas, furniture manufacturers have come up with a folding bed. During the day it can be folded to make a sofa, and in the evening - a cozy bed.

The assembly instructions are simple. Different bed layouts can be found today. These models are convenient because they easily rise after sleep, without taking up the useful space of the room. During the day it is a cozy sofa with a shelf, and in the evening it is a comfortable bed for relaxing. As a result, it turns out that the space is used as conveniently as possible, and the room is not cluttered with anything superfluous.

Types of folding beds

A folding bed, assembled with your own hands, has a number of advantages:

  1. It takes up little space, which allows you to free up room space for other needs.
  2. Dust does not collect on the upholstery, since the structure is in an assembled state.
  3. When assembled, the structure is not noticeable, does not interfere, the room can be used as a living room.

These models can be divided into 2 large groups:

A folding bed is usually disguised as cabinet doors.

  1. Cross-folding which is great for kids. In appearance, they strongly resemble the shelves in the sleeping cars of trains, that is, they fold to the side. Such beds can be easily disguised as shelves, used as bookcases. The designs of such beds are made single. They are comfortable and take up a minimum of space even when unfolded.
  2. A folding bed can be double. It is usually disguised as cabinet doors. After use, it rises upward using a special mechanism. The weight of such a structure is large, so it is not intended for children. The bed frame can be used in a room where there is enough space to lift it, otherwise you will have to think about another option.

Materials and tools for work

To assemble a bed with your own hands, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

Tools for making wood beds.

  1. MDF boards with a thickness of 20 mm. They can be ordered already cut to the required shape and size.
  2. A sheet of plywood with a thickness of 10 mm or more, which will be used for the bottom. It can be replaced with wooden slats, but the plywood sheet is mounted much faster, you just need to drill holes in it for ventilation.
  3. Fasteners: nails, screws, metal corners, plates.
  4. A special lifting mechanism that will ensure the movement of the bed body.
  5. A simple pencil, a metal long ruler, a building level, a building corner.
  6. Sandpaper, drill, screwdriver.
  7. Screwdrivers, grinder, jigsaw.

The folding bed is easy to assemble, today you can find a wide variety of schemes for this. But for this it is imperative to use the drawings showing the assembly order.

Assembling the bed: basic steps

The installation itself will be performed in the following sequence:

Diagram of the folding bed device.

  1. First you need to draw up a project for such a bed. You can use a variety of ready-made ones that offer various options. It is enough only to carry out calculations for the future design, substitute the resulting size values in the already finished drawing. Usually the design is the simplest, it includes a box (mounted to the base), the bottom of the future bed (which is the outer part of the closet), a frame for the mattress and the mattress itself. A lifting mechanism is attached to the box, which allows the structure to be raised and lowered.
  2. The assembly of the bed is as follows: 2 side long boards of the frame are fastened with transverse boards, 1 more central board is installed in the middle, which will give the structure the necessary rigidity. Craftsmen often use the interior space in order to arrange comfortable drawers for bed linen, for pillows that need to be removed somewhere after the bed is folded.
  3. All fastenings are carried out using self-tapping screws, metal corners and plates, the design should be as strong and reliable as possible. After that, it is required to install a lifting mechanism. It can be purchased ready-made, it is mounted on the outer edge of the frame. The mechanism should not interfere with the use of the bed, for which it is necessary to think in advance how and where it is best to place it.
  4. After that, the frame for the mattress is mounted, which is a structure of a rectangular box and transverse slats. Instead of planks, you can use a solid surface of plywood, it all depends on personal preference. But in the plywood it is necessary to make round holes for ventilation of the internal space.
  5. The folding bed is attached to the cabinet structure, the functionality of the folding mechanism is checked. The front part is a panel imitating the surface of cabinet doors, but it can also be designed as an attractive decorative board with carvings. Such a panel is attached last, it is securely screwed to the bed frame.

A folding bed is a convenient design that saves space in small city apartments where there is a lack of free space.

Such reclining frames can be of completely different types, with some experience they can be easily assembled with your own hands. It is only necessary to first decide on the bed model, draw up or take a ready-made drawing, purchase the materials necessary for the work.

In any home, there is a piece of furniture that takes up the most space, of course, it is a bed. It is especially difficult for the owners of small apartments, so many of them prefer folding sofas. But, in fact, no sofa can fully replace a comfortable spacious bed. It is for such cases that folding mechanisms were developed. Today we will talk about how a folding bed is made with our own hands.

Do you need this kind of furniture?

Lack of living space is a problem for many modern families. In small rooms, it is necessary to place the entire set of furniture, which is indispensable in everyday life. A do-it-yourself foldable bed made at home will help save space and improve sleep quality. Of course, it's easier to visit the nearest furniture store and buy it there, but why spend extra money, because you can do everything yourself? The work process does not imply any special difficulties, it is enough to be able to handle a certain tool, and the necessary components and accessories can be purchased on the market or in a specialized store. Like any other piece of furniture, this bed has its pros and cons.

Advantages:

  • Saving time, efforts of the hostess and free space. The assembled upholstery does not accumulate dust.
  • Aesthetics. A large berth is perfectly disguised when assembled under a chest of drawers or wardrobe.

Disadvantages:

  • Difficulty in transportation to another place.
  • You will have to spend your free time and energy on making.

What are folding beds?

Basically, such furniture is placed in cabinets, because it is intended to save free space. Before we look at how a folding bed is made with our own hands, drawings and diagrams, you should understand what such structures are:

  1. Vertical beds. As a rule, they are placed in special niches in the wall. If desired, the furniture can be hidden with colorful original photo wallpapers. Such models are suitable for everyone, regardless of weight, height, age. They can be single or double.
  2. Horizontal models. This design assumes that the left or right side of the bed will be located near the wall instead of the headboard.

Important! More often, such options are used in children's rooms, because babies do not need too much space to sleep. This model is much easier to open than the vertical one.

What materials are needed for the job?

Before making a do-it-yourself folding bed, buy all the necessary materials. Below we provide an approximate list, which you can change depending on the situation.

You will need:

  • For the manufacture of the frame, a wooden beam with a section of 40 by 40.
  • Edged boards for crossbeams.
  • Furniture panels for the manufacture of sides and backs.
  • Plywood sheets.
  • Legs.
  • For attaching the bed to the wall with hinges.
  • Mattress.
  • Folding mechanism.

Main components

A special role is played by the mechanism for the folding bed with your own hands, as well as the mattress. In fact, such a piece of furniture is able to accept almost any type of mattress, but it is better, of course, to purchase an orthopedic model. The mechanism for raising and lowering the structure, of course, is its most important component. The quality of this detail determines how simple and easy it will be for you to hide the bed in a niche.

Important! If you give preference to the high option, then it will almost independently occupy its original position.

At the moment, there are three options for folding mechanisms:

  • Mechanical.
  • On gas shock absorbers.
  • On springs.

Self-assembly of a folding bed

If you have planned a folding bed with your own hands, then, provided it is rationally placed, you can save a lot of space in the daytime, because it will practically not take up space.

For assembly, you will need a frame, a lifting mechanism, a bed. Make the bed according to this step-by-step scheme:

  • We start with the frame. It can be made in the form of a wardrobe or any other piece of furniture that matches the design of the room.

Important! When choosing material for the box, remember that you will have to lift it after the main structure. And the wall to which you decide to attach the product must be concrete, capable of withstanding such a huge load.

  • Attach the box to the wall using the repeat pins and the upper horizontal of the structure. The thickness of the walls located vertically should be 2.5 cm, and those that are horizontal should be 1.5-2.5 cm.
  • The frame will consist of a plinth and a persistent shelf. The back wall can be omitted. If you think that in your case it is necessary, then use chipboard plates.
  • Attach all parts with self-tapping screws, and they should be located at a distance of 25 cm from each other. Slide the back wall towards the box until it is secured. It must be installed on a flat floor.
  • Calculate the dimensions of the case, taking into account the dimensions of the mattress, the bed itself, the thickness of the back.
  • Take two side boards, a headboard, and two backs to make a bed. Secure the mattress to the bed with strong straps. The rest of the parts can be mounted with mounting angles.
  • Connect the bed to the box using a lifting mechanism.

Important! It is better to give preference to the factory-made gas spring version, so that you can fix the bed in the wall with your own hands in any position.
