Interpretation of chapter 8 of the gospel of Matthew. New literal translation from IMBF. About healing a leper

When he came down from the mountain, many people followed him.And then the leper came up and, bowing to Him, said: Lord! you can cleanse me if you want.

Jesus, stretched out his hand, touched him and said: I want to be clean. And he immediately cleansed of leprosy. And Jesus said to him: look, do not tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and bring the gift that Moses commanded, as a witness to them.

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached Him and asked Him:Lord my servant lies at home in relaxation and suffers cruelly.

Jesus tells him: I will come and heal him.

The centurion, answering, said: Lord! I am not worthy that You enter under my shelter, but say only a word, and my servant will recover;for I am a subject and subject, but, having warriors subordinate to me, I say to one: “go,” and he goes; and to another: “come,” and he comes; and to my servant, “do this,” and he does.

Hearing this, Jesus was astonished and said to those who followed him: verily I say unto you, and in Israel I have not found such a faith.I tell you, many will come from east and west and lay down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;and the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said to the centurion: go, and as you believed, may it be unto you.

And his servant recovered at that hour.

Coming to the house of Peter, Jesus saw his mother-in-law lying in a fever, and touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and served them.

When evening came, many demons were brought to Him, and He cast out spirits with a word and healed all the sick, may the things spoken through the prophet Isaiah come true, who says: "He took upon us our weaknesses and bore diseases."

When Jesus saw a multitude of people around Him, he ordered [the disciples] to sail to the other side. Then one scribe came up and said to Him: Teacher! I will follow you wherever you go.

And Jesus said to him: foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no where to lay his head.

Another of his disciples said to him: Lord! let me go first and bury my father.

But Jesus said to him: follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.

And when he entered the boat, his disciples followed him.And so, there was great excitement at sea, so that the boat was covered in waves; and he was sleeping. Then his disciples, going up to him, woke him up and said: Lord! save us, perish.

And he says to them: what do you so  timid, unbelieving?  Then, standing up, he forbade the winds and the sea, and great silence ensued.People, being surprised, said: who is it, that both the winds and the sea obey Him?

And when He arrived on the other side in the country of Gergesinsky, He was met by two possessed, coming out of the tombs, very fierce, so that no one dared to go that way.And so, they cried out: What do you care about us, Jesus, the Son of God? You came here before the time to torment us.

Away from them, a large herd of pigs grazed. And the demons asked Him: if you drive us out, then send us into a herd of pigs.

And He said to them: Go. And they went out and went into the herd of pork. And so, the whole herd of pigs rushed from the steepness into the sea and died in the water.

The shepherds fled and, having come to the city, told about everything, and about what happened to the demoniac. And so, the whole city went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they asked that He depart from their borders.

Matthew 8:19 And one scribe came up and said to Him: “Teacher, i  I will follow you wherever you go. ”

Mt.8: 20 And Jesus said to him: “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”

On the pacification of the storm.

Mt. 8:23 And he went into the boat, and his disciples with him.

Matthew 8:24 And now, a great storm began in the sea, so that the boat was covered in waves. He was sleeping.

Matthew 8:25. The disciples came and woke Him, saying: “Lord, save, we perish!”

Mt.8: 26 And he said to them: “Why were you afraid, of little faith?” Then He stood up, forbade the winds and the sea, and there was complete silence.

Mt. 8:27. People were surprised to say: “Who is this Humanthat the winds and the sea obey Him !? ”

On the expulsion of demons into a herd of pigs.

Mt.8: 28 And when He arrived on the other side, in the country of Gadarin, two obsessed demons came out to meet him, very angry that no one could go that way.

Matthew 8:29 And so they cried out, saying: “What do you care about us, the Son of God? You came here before the time to torment us !? ”

Mt. 8:30 A large herd of pigs grazed away from them.

Matthew 9:31 Demons begged Him, saying: “If you cast us out, then  send us to the herd of pigs. "

Matthew 8:32 And is he  told them: “Go!” They went out and entered the pigs, and the whole herd rushed off a cliff into the sea and died in the waters.

Matthew 8:33 pigs  fled and, having arrived in the city, told about everything and about possessed by demons.

Mt.8: 34 And so, the whole city went out to meet Jesus, and, seeing Him, they asked him to leave their borders.

8:1 - 9,38   Events and miracles do not follow here in the order in which Mark and Luke give them. Perhaps Matthew arranged them by topic, rather than chronologically.

8: 2 leper. Different skin diseases could be called “leprosy”. The one who touched the leper became ritually unclean, but Jesus did not become unclean, and the leper became cleansed.

8: 4 don't tell anyone.  Jesus told the leper to remain silent so that those who seek miracles do not interfere with His fulfillment of His main mission (cf. Mark 1.45). Appearing to the priest, the leper would testify that the Old Testament proclaims of Jesus.

8: 5 centurion.  An officer under whose command there were a hundred people (centurion). This centurion: 1) understood that the authority of Jesus is not equal in Israel; 2) recognized how unworthy he himself was; and 3) believed in Jesus. His faith is truly amazing, for there is no evidence that before that Jesus healed anyone with just one word (cf. Lk. 7,1-10).

8:10   The centurion was a Gentile, and therefore, taking this opportunity, Jesus speaks of the hardening of Israel and that the Gospel of the Kingdom will reach the Gentiles.

8:11 they will lie down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Here Jesus means the meal with the Anointed One, which Isaiah speaks of (25.6–9). Now, instead of sons, pagans appear. This theme arises again in the parables of the evil winegrowers (21.33-44, special art. 43) and the marriage feast (22.1-14). Here, for the first time, the principle stated in Romans (9.30-32) sounds: Israel strives to achieve righteousness by works - and does not achieve it, and pagans, knowing that they are worthy of only condemnation, seek mercy from God and receive it.

8:12 into darkness ... crying ... gnashing of teeth.  The endless and hopeless torment of those who are finally erupted from the Kingdom is depicted.

8:17 He took upon us our weaknesses.  Isaiah (53.4) has ailments and illnesses - the punishment for sins (53.5). Jesus came to take reproach upon himself as a punishment for sinfulness. Demonstrating His authority over natural phenomena, He did not promise to rid the world and the Church of disease and suffering until His Second Coming (8.20-23; 1 Cor. 15.26; Rev. 21.4).

8:20 the Son of Man. In the New Testament, only in three cases is this title not found in the Gospels (Acts 7.56; Rev. 1.13; 14.14). Its use in the Gospels can be divided into three semantic groups. The Son of Man is a man in general. It is in this sense that God, referring to Ezekiel, calls him “the son of man” (Ezekiel 2,1). In a similar sense, this expression is also used by Paul (Eph. 3,5). Jesus called Himself when He meant His suffering, death, and His resurrection for the sake of humanity (17,22.23). Finally, this is the name of the apocalyptic Son of Man, who will come at the end of time for judgment (24.30; 26.64). In the last sense, this title is found in Daniel (7,13.14), where "as if the Son of man" appears before the "Old Days". Jesus could call Himself the Son of Man, since the word "messiah" was associated among Jews with a political and military leader.

8:21-22   See com. to Lk. 9.59 and 9.60.

8:27 the winds and the sea obey Him.  The fact that Jesus pacified the storm shows that He is God, because in OZ only God tames the seas and commands the elements (Ps. 28.3.4; 64.8; 88.10; 106.23-30). Hence the pupils' astonished question: "who is this?"

8:28 to the country of Hergesia.  A place identical to the “land of Gadarinsky” at Mark and Luke, although Gerges (or Geraza, a large city of predominantly pagan Decapolis) was located fifty kilometers southeast of the Sea of \u200b\u200bGalilee, while Gadara was ten kilometers from it. It is believed that most likely we are talking about the village of Kersa on the eastern shore of the sea. The question remains open, but we note that all three evangelists speak in common ("country ..."), and the places mentioned are not far from each other.

two possessed.  Perhaps only one was very fierce, because Mark and Luke talk about one thing. Matthew is important that there were two witnesses. Demons know that Jesus is the Son of God. It would seem that their complaint is legal: all this happened “ahead of time”, i.e. to Doomsday. But Jesus came, which means that the kingdom of God has reached the world and the powers of darkness are broken (see 12.28).

8:29 Son of God.  See com. to 16.16.

8:31 demons.  The Greek word "demon" generally means "deity" (see Acts 17: 18). These were "unclean spirits" (10.1), who opposed God and tormented people, sometimes - dwelling in them. Thus, they are identified with Satan, the prince of demons (9.34; 12.24-28). Jesus' expulsion of the servants of Satan means that the kingdom of God has come (12.28).

8:32   Jesus allowed demons to enter pigs probably because Judgment Day had not yet arrived.

1 Healing a leper; 5 healing the servant of the centurion; 14 healing mother-in-law of Peter and others. 18 "Nowhere to lay your head." "Let the dead bury the dead." 23 Taming the storm; 28 healing of two possessed in the Gergesinsky country.

Matthew 8 chapter

When he came down from the mountain, many people followed him. And now, the leper came and bowed to Him, said: Lord! you can cleanse me if you want. The leper, being reasonable, did not climb the mountain so as not to interrupt the teaching. But when Christ came down from the mountain, he bowed to Him and, showing his many faiths, did not say: “if you pray to God, you will heal Me,” but “if you want.” Therefore, Christ did so.

Jesus, stretched out his hand, touched it and said: I want to be clean. And he immediately cleansed of leprosy. And Jesus said to him: Look, do not tell anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and bring the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. The Lord touched the leper, showing that He was not subject to the law, which commands not to touch the leper, but that He is His Lord, that for the pure there is nothing unclean, and that His holy flesh communicated sanctification. However, avoiding glory, the Lord orders not to tell anyone, but to appear to the priest, for if the priest had not said that the leper was cleansed, he would remain outside the city. Christ commands to bring a gift, as a witness to the Jews, that is, as if to say: "if they accuse me as a transgressor of the law," be a witness to whom I ordered to bring what is brought by law. "

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came up to him and asked Him. And this one did not come up on the mountain so as not to interrupt the teachings. This is the same centurion as the Evangelist Luke. Although the Evangelist Luke says that he sent others as ambassadors to Jesus, but this does not contradict Matthew, who says that the centurion himself came. It is obvious that at first the centurion sent others, and then, when the danger increased, he went himself and said:

Lord my servant lies at home in relaxation and suffers cruelly. Jesus says to him: I will come and heal him.  The centurion did not bring the lad on the bed, believing that the Lord could heal him even when he was absent. And therefore:

The centurion, answering, said: Lord! I am not worthy that you enter under my shelter; but say only a word, and my servant will recover; for I am also a subject to man, but, having warriors subordinate to me, I say to one: go, and go; and to another: come, and come; and to my servant: do that, and do. Hearing this, Jesus was astonished and said to those who followed him: Verily I say unto you, I have not found such a faith in Israel. If, I say, as a king’s slave, I command the warriors subordinate to me, then all the more you can order death and disease so that they depart from one and turn to the other, for bodily illnesses are the essence of war and the punishers of God. Therefore, Christ is astonished when he says: “Even in the midst of Israel I have not found such a faith as I have found in this Gentile.”

I tell you this, that many will come from east and west and lay down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; and the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. He did not say that many pagans would lie down so as not to upset the Jews, but said secretly: "from the east and west." Regarding Abraham, he mentioned in order to show that He is not an opponent of the Old Testament. Speaking of outer darkness, he showed that there is also inner darkness, lighter than the first, for degrees differ in torment. He calls the Jews the sons of the kingdom, because they were given the promises: "Israel is My Son, my firstborn."

And Jesus said to the centurion: Go, as you believed, that it be unto you. And his servant recovered at that hour.Having healed in a word, the Lord showed that He also spoke the truth regarding the expulsion of the Jews.

Having come to Peter's house, Jesus saw his mother-in-law lying in a fever, touched her hand, and the fever left her; she got up and served them. He went into Peter's house to taste the food; touching his hand, he not only calmed the fever, but also restored the woman to full health, so that her strength returned, and she was able to serve. And we really know that it takes a lot of time for patients to get stronger again. While other evangelists say that they asked the Lord and therefore he healed the sick, Matthew, taking care of brevity, did not say so. For I told you, at the beginning, that one of them omits what the other speaks of. But find out that marriage does not impede virtue in the least, for the supreme apostle had a mother-in-law.

When evening came, many demons were brought to Him, and He cast out spirits with a word and healed all the sick; may the speech spoken through the prophet Isaiah come true, who says: He took upon us our weaknesses and bore illnesses. In the evening and at the wrong time, they brought the sick, but He, as a man-lover, healed everyone. Then, so that you do not have doubts about how He could heal so many diseases in a short time, the Evangelist brings Isaiah as a witness. True, the prophet says this about sins, but Matthew applied his words to diseases, because most of them come from sins.

When Jesus saw a multitude of people around Him, he ordered (the disciples) to sail to the other side.  He was not ambitious, but at the same time he shied away from the envy of the Jews.

Then one scribe came up and said to Him: Teacher! I will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus tells him: foxes have holes and birds of the air of heaven; but the Son of Man has no where to lay his head. A scribe calls a knowledgeable book of the Law. This one, seeing many miracles, thought that Jesus was making profit from them, therefore he was trying to follow Him, so that he could also collect wealth. But Christ, meeting his intention, almost said this: "following Me, you hope to gather wealth; but don’t you see that I don’t even have a home? My follower should be the same." The Lord said this in order to convince him to follow Him, to change his mood: but the scribe leaves. Some under foxes and birds mean demons. So, the Lord says to the scribe: "Demons have rest in you, therefore I do not find rest in your soul for Myself."

Another of his disciples said to him: Lord! let me go first and bury my father. But Jesus said to him: Follow me and leave the dead to bury their dead. After someone has surrendered himself to God, he should not return to worldly things again. I must honor the parents, but God must be placed above them. Here the parent was also unfaithful, as can be seen from here: “leave the dead,” that is, unfaithful, “bury their dead.” If this one did not receive permission to bury his father, then woe to those who, having accepted monasticism, return to worldly affairs.

And when he entered the boat, his disciples followed him. And so, there was great excitement at sea, so that the boat was covered in waves; and he was sleeping. The Lord took with Him only disciples so that they would see a miracle. He allows them to be in danger, in order to prepare them for temptation, and so that when they see a miracle, they will all the more believe. He sleeps with the aim that the disciples, frightened, acknowledge their weakness and turn to Him with prayer. Therefore it is said:

Then his disciples, coming to him, woke him and said: Lord! save us: perish. And he said to them: Why are you so fearful, unbelieving? The Lord does not call them unfaithful, but unbelieving, because when they said: “Lord, save us,” they showed their faith, but the word “we perish” is not from faith. They should not have been afraid when the Lord swam with them. Notice that by reproaching them as timid, the Lord shows that fearfulness attracts danger. Therefore, He first calmed down their spiritual storm, and then calmed down the sea excitement.

Then, standing up, he forbade the winds and the sea, and great silence ensued. People, being surprised, said: who is it, that both the winds and the sea obey Him? They were surprised because in appearance He was a man, and in deeds - God.

And when He arrived on the other side in the country of Gergesinsky, He was met by two demons.  While those in the ship are perplexed: where does this, that both the winds and the sea obey Him? - preachers are demons. The evangelists Mark and Luke speak of one patient who had a legion of demons, because one of these patients was worse than the other. The Lord Himself approached them, since no one dared bring them.

Coming out of the coffins, very ferocious, so no one dared to go that way. Demons lived in tombs, wanting to inspire people with the idea that the souls of the dead are made demons. But let no one think this, because the soul, having left the body, does not wander in this world, but the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God; as for the souls of sinners, then they are withdrawn from here, as, for example, the soul of the rich.

And so, they cried out: What do you care about us, Jesus, the Son of God? You came here before the time to torment us.  Behold, they proclaim Him to be the Son of God after they first discovered enmity against Him. They consider torment that they were not allowed to harm people; understand the words “ahead of time” in the sense that the demons thought that Christ, having not endured their anger too strong, would not wait for the punishment, which in reality is not, for they are allowed to fight with us until the end of the century.

Away from them, a large herd of pigs grazed. And the demons asked Him: if you drive us out, then send us into a herd of pigs. And He said to them: Go. And they went out and went into the herd of pork. The demons seek to ruin their pigs, to sadden their owners so that they do not accept Christ. Christ is inferior to the demons, showing what kind of malice they have against people, and if they had power and did not meet obstacles, they would have done worse with us than with pigs. He protects the possessed, so that they themselves do not kill themselves.

And so, the whole herd of pigs rushed from the steepness into the sea and died in the water. The shepherds fled, and when they arrived in the city they told about everything and about what happened to the demoniac. And so, the whole city went out to meet Jesus and, having seen Him, asked that He depart from their limits. Saddened and thinking that after that they will suffer the worst, they ask Him about it. Find out that where the swine life is, there is not Christ abiding, but demons.
