There was a list of 5,000 words (settlements, names, etc.) that was replaced in Russia during the reform of Patriarch Nikon. For example, the word “life” is replaced by the name “Eve” (Genesis 3:20).

This list was discovered in the publication of the popular Bible Encyclopedia. Its author is Nikifor (in the world Alexei Mikhailovich Bazhanov 1832–95) - a spiritual writer, archimandrite and abbot of the Vysokopetrovsky monastery.

This encyclopedia is intended to convey to the reader in a popular form incomprehensible or obscure expressions, names of geographical places, events, names and deeds of prophets, kings, people's leaders and other historical figures mentioned in the Holy Scripture.

For the first time, the Illustrated Complete Popular Biblical Encyclopedia by Archimandrite Nicephorus saw the light of day in 1891.

In 1990 with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II   the encyclopedia was reprinted in a reprint way.

In 2002-2005 Lokid-Press Publishing House prepared and released three editions of the new version of the "Biblical Encyclopedia" by Archimandrite Nicephorus. In this edition, the text is translated into modern Russian spelling, personal names and geographical names are brought into line with current standards, stylistic corrections are introduced, factual data are verified.

In addition to the employees of the publishing house, employees of the Moscow Patriarchate took part in this work. The book is illustrated by the work of Gustave Dore. The encyclopedia is equipped with an application prepared specifically for the new edition.

It should be noted that the Biblical Encyclopedia, compiled by Archimandrite Nikifor, was not intended for scientific purposes and today is very outdated. At present, it has a certain significance for the history of science, as a monument to Russian biblical studies and biblical studies of the 19th century.

Due to the completeness, simplicity and comprehensibility of the content, the book has become a desktop for several generations of curious Bible readers.

Archimandrite Nicephorus - Introduction

Under this name is published an extensive work that I have undertaken at the beginning of last year. The first issue thereof with a letter "A"by "E"inclusively, the states from the explanation of more than 1,500 words in the indicated letters are currently offered to the favorable attention of the public. The remaining 3 issues are almost ready and will be published in a short time, in the continuation of the current and early next year.

In more or less extensive articles, and often short and concise, depending on the importance of the subject, the Popular Bible Encyclopedia answers almost the majority of questions of biblical archeology, architecture, astronomy, geography, biography of biblical figures, botany, sacred bibliography, military science, zoology, agriculture, arts, mineralogy, meteorology, medicine, mathematics, numismatics, pedagogy, physics, ethnography and a friend.

Theological terms, with the exception of strictly biblical terms, are omitted. The explanation of the details of biblical terms applies to both the canonical and non-canonical books of the Holy. The scriptures, however, mean that the explanations of the latter are distinguished by their considerable brevity in comparison with the former.

The entire publication will consist, as already mentioned, of 4 issues, containing up to approximately 7,500 explanations of various words found in the Old Testament and New Testament canonical and non-canonical books of the Holy. The scriptures.

To make this publication the most accessible for everyone, the compiler of the encyclopedia also suggests that the price be set at an affordable and cheap price, compared with other publications of this kind, namely, 2 p. 50 kopecks for each issue, with forwarding, despite the fact that in the Encyclopedia, somewhere it is possible and necessary, a larger or smaller number of drawings and several holy ones will be attached to the text. geographic maps modeled on English publications of this kind.

Explore the Scriptures   (John V, 39), said the Lord the Savior in one place and in another: are mistaken, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God(Matt. XXII, 29), and now, having the main goal as the closest familiarization of readers with the inspired beauty, power and expressiveness of the books of the Holy. The scriptures, the compiler of the indicated work, also means that, in addition to his specialty, to serve for various biblical references, he should also compose a simple, understandable, instructive, reference book for not only an educated, but also for every curious Orthodox Christian who loves verbs of the eternal abdomen.

At the beginning of each article is placed an explanation of each word, a quotation, or no quotes strictly checked with the Russian Bible, which was mainly used by the compiler, and finally a summary of the contents of the article. Sources and benefits in compiling the Bible Encyclopedia have served and are: The Bible in the Slavic language and in the Russian translation, Theology Blessed. Macarius and Anthony, The Extensive Christian Catechism and the Beginning of Rights. Chr. teachings of M. Filaret, Dictionary of Rights. church-liturgical language and sacred rites of St. Mikhailovsky Ave., Verkhovsky Biblical Dictionary, Experience of Solyarsky Biblical Dictionary, Handwörterbuch des biblishen Alterhums Dr Eduard Riehm, D. Eaidies - Biblical Cyclopoedia, Beeton`s Bible Dictionary, Cassel and etc.

The last three English editions proved to be especially useful in compiling the Popular Biblical Encyclopedia, so many articles on biblical geography, biography, botany, zoology, ethnography, etc., with some brief changes, are directly borrowed from them, in view of their rich biblical content. elegant presentation and latest scientific research.

From the first lines it becomes clear that in the Bible most of the words, concepts, names are in Hebrew. But, it turns out, before the Nikon reform, the Slavic Bible existed, where the names and concepts were Old Russian:
