Renovation and decoration of an old interior door. Do-it-yourself door decor: we make interior door decor on our own by choosing the appropriate option Restoration of an old bathroom door

Consider some of the easiest ways to decorate interior doors with your own hands using improvised materials.

As you know, doors are not eternal, and anything can happen. For example, often scratches, chips, cracks appear on the door leaf. In this case, you can repair, replace or decorate carefully, hiding all defects.

Covering the door with wallpaper

To decorate the door, you can use not only paper, vinyl and non-woven wallpaper, but also fabric or liquid.

In this case, the canvas should be prepared by removing a layer of paint in advance, filling irregularities, cracks and sanding the surface.

The applied primer layer will provide additional adhesion of the wallpaper to the door surface.

Wallpaper can be pasted over both the entire canvas and the panels, cutting out pieces of wallpaper of a suitable size. Don't forget to choose the glue that suits the type of wallpaper and dilute it according to the instructions.

Wallpaper classic

Lubricate the cut wallpaper with glue and apply it to the door, making sure that there are no jams and distortions. We smooth the wallpaper with a soft cloth, roller or wide plastic spatula. Carefully cut off the excess with a clerical knife. Additionally, you can decorate by gluing a foam plinth frame over the wallpaper.

For the period of drying of the wallpaper, it is advisable to close the windows in the house and exclude the appearance of drafts, a sharp temperature drop.

Textile

The door decorated with fabric looks very unusual and attractive. In addition to the standard surface preparation, attention should be paid to the fabric itself, ascertaining the degree of shrinkage.

We cut off a small piece of fabric, measure its dimensions, moisten it with water and dry it. After drying, we again take measurements, comparing the readings and finding out the degree of shrinkage. If the value is large, then we also wet the entire piece of fabric before decorating and leave it to dry.

Note! You can use not only a single piece of fabric, but also cut fragments of different colors and textures. This technique is called "patchwork" and is often used by designers in the design of premises.

For fabric, casein glue, a composition based on CMC, as well as Bustilat or Gumilaks mastics are best suited. We apply the adhesive to the fabric and apply it to the door, smoothing it with a spatula. When pasting the door with fragments, it is important to monitor their geometry, otherwise the work will look sloppy.

Additionally, you can decorate the door with beautiful furniture carnations, shiny nylon or leather cords, fabric paint, baguette frames.

- are universal. They cover not only walls, but also doors, creating unimaginable patterns and compositions. In this case, you do not have to mess with cutting canvases. However, it will not be possible to expose the door to moisture. Therefore, for decorating a door in a bathroom or kitchen, this method is unacceptable.

To work, you will need a dry wallpaper mix, several spatulas of different sizes, a hopper gun, a roller, a clear varnish, a color scheme.

Decorate the door with a mirror

A very unusual door finish can be made using mirrors. Such decor will not only attract everyone's attention, but also visually expand the space of the room, add light. However, cutting and attaching a classic glass mirror is very inconvenient, since there is an alternative - acrylic panels with amalgam, which has excellent reflectivity.

Acrylic mirrors are available in a wide range of colors. You can choose any shade you like or several to make a mirror panel. Plastic panels do not break, are easily processed and attached to the door, and are light in weight. The cost of mirrored plexiglass is not the lowest, but the quality and aesthetic qualities are fully consistent with the declared prices.

Before attaching the mirror plastic to, you should carefully level the surface by deepening the nail heads, sanding and covering all the bumps / recesses with putty.

A deep penetration primer must be applied to the door and the back of the acrylic sheet. After it dries, the cut panels are fixed with double-sided tape and mounting glue. For convenience, use mounting suction cups, with their help it is much easier to carefully glue the panels to the door leaf.

As one of the decoration options, you can consider figured acrylic mirrors. Such a mirror can be attached in the center of the door or you can purchase several elements and arrange them beautifully. Usually small parts are produced with an adhesive layer already applied.

Even from such a simple material as buckwheat husks, excellent work is obtained. The cost of the material is minimal, but the service life of such a coating, unfortunately, cannot be called too long.

Step 1. Remove a layer of old paint from the door, the existing vinyl coating, eliminate all irregularities with putty.

Step 2. Remove the door from the hinges and put it on the floor / stools / table. We paint the door leaf with dark brown paint. If there are glass inserts on the door, we protect them with masking tape.

Step 3. We thickly grease the dried door with PVA glue, lay out the husk, distributing it with our hands. If necessary, add small gold sparkles.

Step 4. We cover the door with a transparent varnish (glossy or matte). It is advisable to apply three layers in order to qualitatively fix the buckwheat on the door leaf.

A beautiful door is ready. So that the door does not stand out from the overall design of the room, decorate the picture frame in the same way and place the creation on one of the walls.

We decorate the door in vintage style

Vintage is sophistication and sophistication, the beauty of artificially aged things, in harmony with the chic of individual decorative elements. The door in vintage style will become a work of art, an exclusive element of the interior.

For decoration you will need:

We will combine door painting with decoupage technique and add decorative elements in addition. We will carry out the work on the already removed from the hinges, puttied and carefully sanded door, laid horizontally.

Step 1. Paint the door white. We apply the paint with a wide brush with stiff bristles in one direction, in a thin layer.

Step 2. When the paint dries, gently sand it with coarse sandpaper, achieving the effect of "old times".

Step 3. We start decorating the panels or the central part of the door. We tear musical notebooks and old newspapers into small pieces with our hands. We draw a field for activity of a rectangular or square shape on the door with a pencil. Lubricate the outlined areas with PVA glue. Immediately lay out the paper randomly, smoothing it with your hands. On top, apply a transparent varnish in two layers.

Step 4. Along the perimeter of the areas pasted over with paper, we fasten a black baguette to the mounting glue.

Additionally, you can decorate with a beautiful wreath, a large lace bow or plastic beads imitating pearls (glue-based).

There are many other ways to decorate doors. Operate with the materials available in your home arsenal, connect your imagination and create your own masterpieces.

Do-it-yourself door trim is a relatively cheap and not too difficult way to ennoble your home and give it a finished look. The process consists not only of facing the canvas, it includes the processing of other components of the doorway, including the frame and slopes. The need for finishing work appears when replacing the entrance or interior structure or during the repair of the premises.

To make the entrance to the dwelling attractive, you should first deal with the alignment of the slopes. This is the zone of the wall in the opening, which goes after the box. Slopes are flat or placed at a slight slope. To level them, plaster is used. For repair work prepare:

  • primer;
  • several straight spatulas;
  • grid for plaster;
  • starting and finishing putty;
  • corners.

First, the surface of the opening is cleaned of debris and dirt. After that, the slopes are carefully primed. Corners are installed on the outer perimeter. Next, apply the starting putty. If necessary, use a special grid to align the cracks. If the splits are too deep, builders recommend using drywall.

After the starting layer has dried, a finishing plaster is applied to it. When plastering, the appearance of possible defects should be immediately prevented. The doorway from the inside should not have cracks or holes.

Finishing the door consists in installing the box. It is a frame in which the canvas is attached. When installing another box, you do not need to make strong edits. In extreme cases, they fix chips or hide joints with putty or a wax pencil.

Materials for exterior finishing

The situation is quite different if you have to finish the jambs of the old wooden front door. For this, the following materials are used:

  1. acrylic paint or stain;
  2. putty;
  3. primer;
  4. antiseptic impregnation;

To paint an old metal sheet, a primer and spray paint are enough.

Before facing the door, the first step is to prepare the surface. First, remove the layer of the old coating. The wood is sanded, and rust is removed from the iron door. With the help of putty, cracks and cracks are closed. Only then can the primer be applied. When working with a wooden coating, it is first necessary to apply a layer of antiseptic impregnation. Then comes the painting process itself.

To achieve a good result, you will need to apply at least 3 layers of high-quality paint. If the input canvas is made of wood, then stain can be used instead of paint. This will give the wood a natural shade, and the facing of the canvas will look natural. On top, the tree is varnished to extend its service life.

Metal sheet finishing

The finishing of a metal door has some differences from the lining of a wooden leaf. One of the easiest options to ennoble an iron door is to paint it. To do this, it is necessary to prepare the surface, clean it of old paint and rust. It is most convenient to paint an iron coating with a special spray gun.

For metal, decorative materials such as veneer, laminate, PVC film, and plastic are also used.

Interior decoration of metal doors is most often carried out by upholstery. For these purposes, leather, dermantin or leatherette is suitable.

The door is removed from its hinges and placed on a horizontal surface. Unscrew hardware. Seals in the form of leatherette rollers are attached to the metal coating with glue. Then an elastic heat-insulating material is laid, which is covered with upholstery on top.

Improving interior doors

Finishing interior doors has many more options. It can be done with:

  • painting;
  • wallpapering;
  • use of self-adhesive fabric;
  • decorative overlays;
  • decoupage;
  • fabric covers;
  • installation of mirror panels;
  • artificial aging.

Each of these options can be made by hand. It all depends on the individual preferences of the owners of the house.

Painting is considered the easiest way to update the canvas and the box. Do-it-yourself door decoration with wallpaper requires more effort. But the use of vinyl or non-woven coating will help visually expand the space of the living room, making the opening less visible.

Self-adhesive film is a good choice for finishing the canvas in the bathroom, since the material is moisture resistant. With the help of decoupage, you can decorate the surface with any image transferred from paper. Mirrored panels can visually expand the space of a room.

What can be improved

Finishing interior doors may be needed not only during cosmetic repairs. Sometimes an old and ordinary doorway is decorated with unusual details to update the interior.

Cloth upholstery is an unusual solution. This method of finishing focuses on the opening and gives originality to the interior of the room. More expensive ways to improve the room include the use of decorative overlays.

Artificial aging will turn a simple wooden canvas into a precious antique item. Finishing old doors consists of painting and varnishing. But even here you can show your imagination. To do this, use paint of an unusual shade or paint the door panel in several colors.

The interior door occupies an important place in the interior of the room. It serves not only as an obstacle to noise, delimits space and allows privacy, but also is a noticeable piece of decor.

There are several reasons why you can start decorating an interior door:

  1. Firstly, despite the huge selection of ready-made (and very attractive) doors, it is sometimes very difficult to find the right model. Sometimes all the doors seem the same - "I have already seen this one at the neighbors", "and this one looks like the door to our office." You don’t want to repeat and acquire something unoriginal and become commonplace, because your interior is unique, so the door must match.
  2. Secondly, even an old door with scratches, peeling paint and indelible stains is not known why you often don’t want to change it! After all, any replacement of a door is also a replacement of the box itself, which is associated with dust, plaster, sealing the gaps formed, the need to change the wallpaper (at least around the new door) - in general, with local, and sometimes overhaul.

That is why sometimes it is much easier for the owner to update an already installed door "on the spot", that is, without changing the entire box, right here in the room. Of course, in some cases, you still have to remove the door from the hinges, but this is much easier and faster than starting a full-fledged repair. Whatever the reasons that prompted you to start decorating an interior door, we’ll say right away that often you don’t need almost anything for this, except for the materials left over from the last repair.

And one should not think that real craftsmen and needlewomen will be able to cope with such a task - even a person who has never held a hammer or brushes in his hands can implement some of the ideas proposed in this article. And the result of your work in any case will be original, unusual and will become a source of pride - "here it is, our door, he did it himself (well, at least he decorated it)".

So, we offer you 14 interior door decorating ideas that you might want to bring to life by decorating your interior.

Idea first. We paint, we just paint

The easiest way, without frills and unnecessary work, is to put the door in order. To do this, you will first need to remove the door from the hinges, then go over it with a spatula, removing old paint, level the surface with sandpaper, close up cracks and scratches with putty, remove grease stains, seal the glass with masking tape so as not to stain it, and you can take it in hands roller or brush! It is better to choose acrylic paint - it dries faster, and paint the door in a horizontal position - so the paint will not drain and lie more evenly. However, if it is convenient for you to do all of the above on a vertically standing door, you can not remove it from the hinges. Just do not forget to put something on the floor during painting so as not to stain the linoleum or laminate.

White, simply painted door. Refurbishing or repainting a different color is not a big deal, although the moldings and carvings need special, gentle handling during sanding and removing old paint.

The second idea. We paint in several colors

The option is more complicated, although it is also associated with staining. In this case, we do not just paint the door in one color, but create a simple or complex geometric pattern of stripes, squares, rhombuses, and so on. The door must first be prepared, as in the first case - that is, it must be cleaned of old paint and the surface leveled. However, in this case, we will need much more masking tape - it is with its help that you will delimit the zones between stripes or rectangles. In addition, in order not to buy several cans of paint of different colors, you can purchase white paint (one liter per door is enough), as well as several dyes with which you can experiment with shades.

Gold and white, blue and pale pink, bright stripes on a neutral background, rhombuses and sinuous lines - a variety of patterns and color combinations can appear on the canvas of your door.

When choosing a geometric pattern, remember that a wide strip along the entire door leaf is more suitable for country style, and for classics it is better to choose other options, for example, paint the top of the door in a lighter shade and separate the parts with a horizontal strip

Idea three. Highlight moldings

Also painting the door, which in general is not too different from the first option. However, in this case, we will focus on the moldings by painting them in a contrasting color. White and black is a great combination, but already beaten up, so think about what colors will look best together. Designers have long recognized white and green, blue and yellow, red and dark blue as excellent options. Such a door will look great both in a bohemian boudoir and in a strict classic living room.

The white door with highlighted black moldings is a true classic. By the way, if your door does not have such decorations, it is easy to make them yourself - special thin wooden planks are sold, which are simply nailed onto the canvas

An unexpectedly bright, pink door that looks especially aristocratic and attractive thanks to the frames highlighted in white

Idea four. We paint according to the finished stencil

A very convenient and easy way to turn your door into a work of art, even if you do not have the talent of an artist. Ready-made stencils can be purchased at both construction and specialized stores, or ordered on one of the sites, and the choice of drawings and patterns is very large. Then we simply apply the stencil to the already prepared door and apply the paint. Easy, fast and as a result - very beautiful!

Applying a drawing on a ready-made stencil is as easy as shelling pears, and the choice will allow you to choose an original inscription, an exotic pattern, and an unusual picture

Such a deliberately simple pattern can easily be created without stencils. It was the uneven lines and simplicity that became its main highlight.

Fifth idea. Art painting

Unlike all the options for decorating the door already listed, this option is not for everyone. To create a real masterpiece on an ordinary door, you will need the talent of an artist and certain skills in working with brushes, since a roller is no longer enough here. Imagine that your door is a blank white canvas, on which, thanks to your skill, a beautiful landscape, a cheerful picture or an exquisite pattern will appear. Fine hand painting always looks expensive and stylish, and you can achieve this effect by spending money only on buying paints.

Ready-made interior doors with artistic painting are offered by many European companies. Of course, they are not cheap, so you can try to create something similar with your own hands. Are you afraid it won't work? You can always just paint over a bad drawing!

Idea six. Children's creativity

Does your kid love to draw? Give him such an opportunity - let him decorate the door to the nursery. Yes, such a naive, bright pattern will be out of place in a strict living room, but as a decoration for a children's room it is a great option. Just agree with the young artist that the second half of the door is already your field for the realization of fantasies!

Usually children's paints wash off very easily, so your budding artist can repaint the door every day. But you will have to pre-prepare the canvas by putting the door in order

Idea seven. Unusual texture with paint

If you find it boring to simply apply paint, and you are afraid to take on hand-painting, you can try to achieve unusual textures, such as the effect of a wooden surface or an antique door, using very simple tools. So, with the help of a sponge you can get a spotted surface, steel wool will help to achieve the effect of an old door, a hard brush - to create an expressive surface of denim. Special ready-made paints are also sold that perfectly imitate jeans, wood, canvas, velvet or slate.

On such a door, painted under a slate board, it is convenient to leave messages to household members.

Idea eight. Wall mural

If all the previous ideas concerned only work with paints and brushes, then this method is suitable for those who do not want to mess with paint. Wall murals will instantly transform the look of your interior door, turning it into a striking design element. Of course, it is best to purchase murals designed specifically for doors - in this case, your drawing will definitely look complete. Ready-made photo wallpapers usually have a standard size of 86x220 centimeters, so they are only suitable for standard doors, and without moldings and glass inserts. However, now many online stores offer custom-made door murals, so you can choose the option that is ideal for your door, with any pattern. You can cut to size doors and ordinary wall murals, however, in this case, the drawing may look unfinished.

How do you like such an unusual option - a door that turned into a telephone booth with the help of photo wallpaper?

Before sticking photo wallpapers, the door must be cleaned of stains, and the surface should be leveled, sanded and degreased with a solvent. You can use ordinary wallpaper glue, but PVA is much more reliable. The disadvantages of this option for decorating the door include the fact that a bright image will immediately catch your eye, so it can quickly get bored. In addition, the murals on the door, due to frequent touches, will lose their original attractiveness. However, no one will stop you from changing the wallpaper on the door to something more original in a couple of months.

Particularly popular are photo wallpapers with picturesque landscapes.

Wall murals on the door will help to make a small room visually larger due to the increased panoramic perspective. And sticking them is very easy, for this you do not even need to remove the door from the hinges.

Idea nine. Ordinary wallpapers

Previously, this decor option was very popular, but now many designers consider it bad manners. This does not prevent ordinary wallpaper, "migrated" to the door, to remain a popular way to decorate the interior. Sticking paper and vinyl wallpaper on the door is especially popular in Sweden, the USA and Canada. By the way, it is not at all necessary to hide the entire door behind the wallpaper - on the contrary, the wallpaper, divided into clear “compartments” thanks to moldings, looks especially interesting. The remaining surfaces of the door can simply be painted, choosing a shade that matches the color of the wallpaper. Alternatively, you can buy cork wallpaper and varnish it on top for reliability. Their unusual texture will make the door more original.

Preparing the door is exactly the same as in the case of using photo wallpapers. The main advantage is cheapness, since you can use wallpaper left over from the previous repair, and ease of decoration. The main disadvantage is rapid wear - at the joints, the wallpaper can peel off and tear.

Wallpaper pasted not on the entire door, but on parts highlighted by moldings, look more spectacular

The door, pasted over with the same wallpaper as the walls, will literally merge with the interior. On the reverse side, the door, of course, is pasted over with other wallpaper so as not to stand out against the background of the wall of another room.

Idea ten. Fabric instead of wallpaper

This option will look especially cute and homely. The door decorated with fabric looks original, the choice of fabrics today is surprisingly wide, but this method also has its drawbacks.

If you choose a single piece of fabric to decorate the door, you should take care of the original pattern.

First, when choosing a fabric, you should make sure that the glue does not leave stains on it. Secondly, the edges of the fabric should be pre-treated, otherwise the protruding threads will not look very aesthetically pleasing. Thirdly, doors decorated with fabric are not suitable for every style of interior design. Those who are fond of patchwork, that is, the creation of canvases from different pieces of fabric, can turn their door into a real applique of bright shreds. By the way, if there is a place for a glass insert on the door, you can hang a small curtain here, fixing it on a fishing line and small carnations.

Very nice door, decorated using patchwork technology. The trouble is that such bright shreds have nothing to do with the classic interior style, this is an option, rather, for a “rustic” and colorful country

Idea eleven. Posters, cards, paper

An option for creative people and a great idea for a teenager's room. The door can be decorated with a poster and an image of your favorite artist or group, sheets from an old geographical atlas, or sheet music. Sticking such paper sheets and posters is as easy as regular wallpaper.

An old geographical map will be appropriate even on the interior door of an ordinary living room, but posters are better to “settle” in a teenager’s room

Idea twelve. All kinds of stickers

This simple and not too expensive way of decorating a door is becoming more and more popular today. Vinyl stickers can be purchased in online stores, the cost of a model the size of a standard door starts at 2.5 thousand rubles, they are glued very easily, and will last longer than ordinary photo wallpapers.

Stickers with such funny and at the same time useful inscriptions will not only decorate the doors, but also cheer up the guests.

If you do not want to hide the entire door behind the stickers, it is quite possible to purchase small images - a butterfly, a bright flower, and so on. They cost less, and the appearance of the door will be completely transformed. “Informative” stickers are also popular, for example, on the door of an office, bathroom or bathroom, which will tell guests what is hidden behind this door.

The elegant lady on this sticker will immediately inform the guests of the house that the bathroom is hidden behind this door.

Often, stickers can look like ordinary photo wallpapers, and sometimes they can look like hand-painted on a white door or a child's drawing.

Idea thirteen. Decoupage

The technology of scrupulously cutting out the images you like from paper and further composing applications from these pieces allows you to transform not only a jewelry box or photo album cover, but also an ordinary door. Everything that a beginner master of the ancient art of decoupage needs: paper drawings, napkins with a pattern you like, postcards and the like - everything from which you can cut a picture, a brush, PVA glue, scissors, glitter, acrylic varnish, contour and acrylic paint.

In the process of decoupage, you can use literally anything - from scraps of old newspapers to greeting cards.

In a brief description, the process looks like this: we apply a layer of white acrylic paint on the surface of the door, wait for it to dry, then another layer - and again wait until it dries completely. Then we apply a layer of paint of the selected shade, and then we attach the cut-out paper drawings with PVA glue. At the same time, we try to glue the piece as evenly as possible, without wrinkles and expel all air bubbles. With the help of glitter and contour, we can add dots, stripes and other small details. Then we cover the finished picture with a layer of varnish. That's all. The rest is your imagination and beautifully selected drawings.

The decoupage technique allows you to create amazingly beautiful paintings, and the lacquer coating will extend the life of the decor.

Idea fourteen. Mosaic

A door decorated with bright mosaics will be an excellent option for a bathroom; you can also decorate a metal front door in this way. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to use pieces of ceramics for these purposes - in this case, the door may turn out to be too heavy. Mosaic can be created from pieces of wood or veneer, as well as purchased ready-made, made of glass.

In this case, a bright glass mosaic occupies most of the door, making it very unusual and cheerful.

The mosaic is fixed with special glue (Moment or liquid nails are suitable) on a prepared and cleaned surface. It is worthwhile to think over all the details of the pattern in advance by drawing the layout of the pieces with a pencil. By the way, you can decorate with a mosaic not only the door itself, but also the box, highlighting the slopes using the selected pattern.

Creating a mosaic pattern is a huge scope for creativity. And if some part still falls, you can always attach it back.

An old door can become a real art object, all it takes is a little imagination and effort. To begin with, you can use one of the simplest ideas, and then, having got a taste, try yourself in the art of decoupage or painting. In any case, your door will definitely be one of a kind!

Doors play an important role in interior design. There are many different models in stores, but high-quality ones cost a lot of money, and you usually don’t want to look at cheap ones. There is a good option - to update the old doors with your own hands. There are many techniques, and not the most complex ones, that allow you to correct the situation for little money.

Training

Whatever method you choose to update the old interior door, you will need to carry out a number of preparatory work. Usually old painted specimens are going to decorate. Painting is usually amateur, so there are more than enough bumps, sagging and other minor defects. All of them need to be aligned.

We remove the door leaf from the hinges, lay it on a flat surface. You can - on the goats or the table. We take putty on wood (even if they are from or) and we cover all holes, chips and cavities with it. After drying, we proceed to the next stage - grinding.

We take sandpaper with a large grain and with a fine one. We process, achieving a flat surface. If you work manually, it takes a lot of time and effort. With a hand sander, work moves faster. If further painting is planned, we try to achieve the most even surface. If you plan to decorate with wallpaper, fabric, self-adhesive film, you can not bring it to the ideal, but it should be exactly the same.

Next, we remove the dust, wash off the remnants with water and diluted dishwashing detergent. We dry. The next steps depend on the selected update method. If you are going to glue fabric or wallpaper of any kind, you can prime the surface (liquid diluted glue or a special primer). After the primer dries, you can glue the selected type of decor or apply paint. By the way, if you are going to paint the doors, you need to select the paint of the same type that was before, otherwise you will have to remove everything to a clean base, and this is very difficult.

Update old doors with wallpaper

The easiest and most affordable way to make old doors look attractive is to use wallpaper. They do not have to be in the tone of the walls, although this option is not excluded. First, we prepare the canvas as described above, and then you can proceed to the finish.

The procedure for pasting doors with wallpaper is as follows:

Wall mural

Modern photo printing allows you to transfer three-dimensional images to paper. They turn out very nice. And you can print any image of your choice. Generally, any. Photo printing is usually done by advertising agencies, sometimes by printing houses. Contact there, explaining what you need (have a flash drive with the selected pattern and the exact dimensions of the canvas on which you want to print the image). Having received the required image, we glue it on the door according to the method. described above.

Wallpaper with moldings

If you stick foam or polyurethane moldings, sockets on plain wallpaper, the style will completely change. This type of door is suitable for classic interiors or rooms; when using a colorful background and a different form of moldings (with roundings), you can decorate in the Provence style.

The work is no different from the sequence prescribed above. We take prepared doors with a leveled surface, spread with glue, glue wallpaper.

Leveling the panels with a rubber roller is not difficult to achieve good results, but some small air bubbles remain. To remove them, they take a special plastic spatula (they are available in any hardware store), and they finally remove the air from the center to the edges. Also, with this spatula, the joint of the wallpaper, if any, is ironed. It is quite possible to achieve that the joint will not be visible.

We cut the edges of the wallpaper with a wallpaper knife. This must be done until the wallpaper is softened from the glue, otherwise then they can “reach out” for the blade and tear. We leave to dry. After 12 hours or a day - depending on the temperature and humidity in the room - you can continue decorating the old door.

Carefully, with a simple pencil, mark up. When everything is drawn, with a tape measure we measure the required length of the molding pieces. Cut off, cut the edges at an angle of 45 °. We take a suitable glue (you can use PVA) and carefully spread the back surface of the cut off elements, glue them according to the markings, leave to dry.

By the same principle, you can update old doors so that the style will be different. Some examples in the photo gallery.

Beautiful tone-on-tone wallpaper is the secret to the appeal of this door decor
Moldings were glued to the painted doors, which were then painted with “golden” paint.

Designer decoration of old doors

If you are interested in designer things, you can try to turn it into an art object. The good news is that you do not need to cook it: bumps and sagging will hide under the design.

The decoration process begins with the manufacture of papier-mâché. Take egg trays, sprinkle with water, knead with your fist, trying to level the surface. In the process, they will tear, this is normal and even good - we need small pieces. These almost flat fragments, on liquid nails or with a glue gun, are glued to the surface in random order.

Lids, rings, a small perfume bottle, a small non-working computer mouse, the remains of a mosaic, everything that comes to hand are used. There will be a lot of trash, you can collect ahead of time.

When most of the surface is “decorated”, we take acrylic silver paint in spray cans (2 pieces are needed) and paint over the decor well. When choosing a paint, it is better to take an expensive one, in particular German, so that it does not crumble later.

Decorating doors using decoupage technique

Romantic or "cheerful" door design can be done using decoupage. For work you will need:

  • napkins with a suitable pattern;
  • PVA glue (about 200 ml);
  • natural bristle brush;
  • acrylic lacquer.

We prepare the canvas, as described earlier. We prime and paint in the appropriate color. After the paint has dried, we start decorating. We take a pack of napkins you like, separate the top layer, which is with a pattern.

Tear napkins with a pattern lengthwise into three strips. We tear, we do not cut. We need a slightly uneven edge. Two strips on one side get a smooth edge, put them aside in one direction. The middle part is torn into squares. The best option is if they are with a side of 3-4 cm.

We take glue, a brush, a small container. In it we mix PVA with water in equal proportions.

Next, we proceed to decorate the door with our own hands. We take a strip with a smooth edge, apply it to the area to be decorated (in this case, this is the center of the door leaf). We dip the brush in glue, we begin to smooth the fragment in different directions. Creases form, but this is just not bad - a more textured finish will turn out, so there is no need to align them especially. Napkins when wet are very delicate and elastic, remember this when working, act carefully.

Gradually we make a frame with one even edge. The second is carelessly torn.

Filling the middle of the "frame"

When the entire surface is filled, we leave it for a day - we wait until the PVA dries. Next, take acrylic varnish and cover our decor with a soft brush. So that it does not smell, we take a water-based varnish. It's a little more expensive, but it doesn't hurt your head.

The beauty of decoupage is that at a meager cost we get beautiful things.

Door decoration with self-adhesive film

Perhaps the easiest way is to update old doors with self-adhesives. All you need:

  • the film itself
  • a spray bottle containing soap and water;
  • plastic spatula or soft cloth;
  • sharp knife (you can wallpaper).

This film is available in different versions - there is a monochromatic matte or glossy, there is a monochromatic one with holographic patterns, under a tree, there are even special doors for pasting with applied photo printing.

Regardless of the type of film, it is glued in the same way. In this case, we decided to update the old doors using the photo printing option. One moment: before gluing, we remove handles, latches and other door fittings.

For the decor to be of high quality, the surface of the door must be clean, even and smooth. If you processed it before this grinder, try gluing a small piece of film. If it sticks well, everything is fine. If it “does not stick”, you will have to prime the doors, and then paint or varnish them to create a smooth surface.

We take a spray bottle and evenly wet the surface of the door.

We shave the film, remove the protective layer from one of the corners, and also spray it. So, wetting, we separate the protective paper from the upper part along the entire width of the film.

You should get a strip 15-20 cm wide. Do not remove any more so that the film does not stick to the canvas. We apply the peeled off part to the upper edge of the door leaf (or the area to be decorated), it quickly sticks. Try to immediately apply evenly, but the situation can be corrected - for this we wetted the surface so that the film could be moved. If you pull it, it moves a little.

After making sure that the canvas lay flat, we take a plastic spatula (for wallpaper) and smooth the surface with it, moving from the center to the edges. The goal is to remove all the air. Since the surface is wet, this is not difficult - water displaces air.

Further, everything is simple. We pull down the protective paper, peeling off the strip, glue it and so on - to the very bottom of the door. If you glued the upper part for a long time, the lower part may dry out, so periodically check if the doors are dry, spray again if necessary.

After the entire film is glued, cut off the excess along the edges with a sharp knife. All that remains after that is to install the fittings.

Door decor with stencils

Old doors can be updated with applied drawings. The only pity is that not everyone has artistic talents. But in this case, the problem is solved with the help of stencils. You can draw them yourself, or you can find the image you like, print it on thick paper, cut out the pattern with a sharp knife, leaving jumpers in places. Here is the finished stencil.

The disadvantage of a paper stencil is that it does not last long. If you need a "long-playing" transfer it must be on a transparent thick film. In more detail, the stencil cutting technology for door decor is shown in the video.

The drawing can be anything. Both geometric and floral, stylized images of animals, birds, cartoon characters are popular.

Having completed repairs in the room, the owners may be faced with the fact that the old interior door does not match the new interior, although in terms of its functional abilities it can still last for some time. In this case, you should think about how to update the interior door with your own hands. There are several decorative techniques that differ in the complexity of execution and the cost of materials. You just have to choose the most suitable one.

Preparatory work

Before decorating interior doors, they are prepared. For this, the following tools are used:

  • building glue;
  • tracing paper;
  • Press.

The door needs to be removed. Then examine the canvas for defects. If the old box has scratches, they need to be repaired with wood putty. You can decorate the canvas with photo wallpaper. If in some places the doors are peeling, then an adhesive mixture is applied, tracing paper is applied, and pressed. An adhesive mixture is also used to seal cracks and micro-crevices. If the defects are large, chips with fine dispersion are added to the adhesive composition.

Door Upgrade Methods

Simple ways to update the canvas include:

  • applying varnish;
  • staining;
  • the use of stain and veneer;
  • stained glass

Staining, varnishing and staining

Old wooden doors can be renewed by staining, varnishing and staining.

For water, synthetic and organic dyes are used. After that, the door acquires a neat appearance.

The door leaf is possible. Wood varnish is well absorbed into the wood, evenly covering the entire surface of the structure. The main plus of the protective and decorative composition is the presence of a tinting base.
To apply varnish, a sprayer or brushes are used. Experts advise to ennoble the tree with a brush that easily repeats the structure of the structure, well impregnating hard-to-reach areas. To increase the protective properties, it is recommended to paint the door in 2 layers.

If you have to refresh the box again, a stain is used. Then the coating is varnished. Stain can be used to update the color scheme of the canvas. It prevents the mixing of tones, and due to the subsequent varnishing, the brightness of the color is enhanced. Sanding results in a matte finish.

If there is no need to create a matte surface, polishing and drying is carried out after grinding. This technology gives the door a crystal shine.

Veneering

To decorate the door, veneer is used. This method of decorating wooden canvases is used if they are made from cheap sawdust. Due to veneering, the door acquires an aesthetic appearance. The veneer must be glued transversely relative to the wood fiber.

The veneer gives the door a noble look of a real solid wood

Self-adhesive film

You can decorate the box with self-adhesive vinyl imitating wood. With this technique, coating defects are easily hidden. Before pasting a wooden door, you will need to prepare a hair dryer, cloth, scissors.

At the first stage, the coating is cleaned from various defects. This stage is considered the most difficult. Next, markup is performed using a tape measure. These canvases are transferred to millimeter markings made by the manufacturer on the reverse side of the film. For cutting the product, a knife is used.

The film hides all minor defects and gives the surface the look of natural wood.

The cut pieces of self-adhesive are applied to the desired section of the door. On the wrong side of the film there is a protective layer, under which there is glue. Carefully separate a few centimeters of the layer to stick the product on the door.

The overlay, completely applied to the door, is smoothed out with a rubber spatula or a soft material. Self-adhesive is wrapped on all ends of the coating. Immediately cut the corners of the PVC product, install a lock with a handle.

Wall mural

With the help of modern photo printing, an image of the desired size is transferred to paper. Photo wallpapers on wooden doors look beautiful. The image is printed any. To do this, you can use the services of an advertising agency or a printing house. The image can be selected at home or with the help of specialists.

One of the options for updating interior doors are photo wallpapers.

On plain wallpaper, you can stick polyurethane or foam moldings. In this case, the style in which the doors were decorated will change. The resulting design is suitable for a room decorated in a classic style. If you use a colored background or rounded moldings, then the doors will be decorated in the Provence style.

Before applying the pattern, the surface is leveled, treated with glue. If the paint lags behind the door, it is removed. Wallpaper is also treated with glue.

A rubber roller is used to level the canvas. If bubbles remain, they are removed with a plastic spatula. Then the remaining air is removed from the center of the structure to the edges. With the help of this spatula, the joints of the wallpaper (if any) are ironed. If the technology is performed correctly, then the joints are not visible.

Wallpapers with moldings are suitable for interiors in a classic style

The edges of the wallpaper must be cut with a knife. This is done until the wallpaper softens from the glue. Otherwise, they will tear and stretch easily. Leave to dry for several hours. The process of decorating fiberboard or solid wood continues after 12-24 hours. It depends on the temperature and humidity level.

A simple pencil is used for marking. After the drawing has been applied, you will need to measure the length of the constituent elements of the molding with a tape measure. Then they are cut off, and the edges are cut down at an angle of 45 degrees. Using PVA glue, the back surface of the pieces is smeared. They need to be glued according to the markings. When the canvas has dried, it can be installed back. According to this principle, at home, you can update the doors of the bedroom, nursery, kitchen.

Drawings and paintings

The advantages of this decor include:

  • beautiful and original appearance;
  • simple execution;
  • the ability to use ready-made stencils;
  • wide choice of materials;
  • implementation of different ideas.

The disadvantage of the method can be considered that its application requires the presence of an artistic skill..
At the first stage, the coating is degreased with alcohol, treated with a primer. The last composition is applied twice. Acrylic paint is used in the same way. Each subsequent layer of paint is applied after the first layer has dried.

When zoning, the shape of the paneled part of the coating and the geometry of the ornament are taken into account. To give the surface a vintage look, the contours of the zones are covered with a different color. The paint can be applied with a sponge. The stripes that protrude from the door can be painted golden. Then the ornament is transferred to the surface and signed in suitable colors.

Decoration using decoupage technique

Decoupage does not require dismantling the door structure. You just need to wash and dry the cover. The opening is pre-pasted with mounting tape. The tree is well and qualitatively primed. The surface is rubbed with a simple paraffin candle, and then painted. The next step is gluing a decoupage card. Pre-soak it in water for 12 minutes. The remaining drops of water are wiped off with a rag. The back of the strips and the surface of the door are treated with PVA glue.

For decoupage doors, special decoupage cards are used.

Each piece is glued tightly. In this case, you need to ensure that wrinkles and bubbles do not appear. If such defects are not eliminated immediately after their appearance, the coating will turn out to be uneven.. If the coating is dry, putty is applied to the edge of the constituent elements. Excess composition will need to be removed with a wet rag or emery. A lacquered box will require a longer preparation for painting. Lacquer is pre-removed, defects are eliminated.

If necessary, the edges of the canvas are processed, scuffs are left. This technology will give the coating a vintage style. If the step-by-step instructions are followed, then the finished decorated doors will look original with details of different shapes. They can be cut from napkins. The color of the future canvas is selected taking into account the shade of the interior of the entire room. Sticking of the material is carried out according to the above method. The finished coating is varnished with an acrylic base.

Antique decoration

Antique wooden door can be seen not only in apartments, but also in houses and offices. At the same time, decor that imitates antiques is rare. It gives the door leaf individuality. By craquelure is meant a two-layer application of varnish on the door. Particular attention is paid to the process of selecting varnish - each layer should have a different composition and different drying times. Preliminary cleaning, degreasing and drying of the coating is carried out.

Craquelure gives the door the look of old wood

To age the door, you will need some materials:

  • special varnish for craquelure;
  • bituminous varnish, which gives the effect of antiquity;
  • acrylic paint.

A craquelure varnish is applied to the prepared coating. If the 1st layer is dry, the 2nd layer is applied - bituminous varnish. It is needed to enhance the contrast when a white background is used. If a dark tone is applied, acrylic paint is applied. This technology is considered the best. If necessary, craquelure varnish is replaced with simple PVA glue, vinegar, egg white or gelatin. This method of updating doors is suitable for people who like antique style.

Decor with stencils

If you have skill in processing wooden products, you can use a more complex update of the canvas. To apply decor with a stencil, you will need:

  • leather;
  • glass or mirror tiles;
  • stained glass;
  • mat;
  • bamboo curtains;
  • bars;
  • veneer.

To carry out such a decor requires perseverance and a good imagination. As a result, it will be possible to make an original door that will fit perfectly into any interior.

Using stencils, you can change the design of the door

The door, the canvas of which is replaced by a stained-glass window, gives the room an unusual look. To implement this idea, water-based paint is used. Previously, the desired pattern is thrown onto the surface. Paint is used to transfer the design to the glass coating. This procedure is performed in a certain sequence:

  • preparation of a sketch of a drawing on paper;
  • glass processing by cleaning and degreasing;
  • substituting the picture to the glass, followed by its stroke on the back side with a thin brush;
  • drawing the contours of the drawing with different colors of paints.

After the process is completed, the paints must dry for 22 hours. Then a piece of glass is mounted in the door, well fixed.

Renovation of the opening and slopes

In addition to the door itself, the doorway is also updated. If this is not done, then the canvas will have an unfinished look. To successfully complete the above work, it is recommended to gradually consider the finish.

The finishing of the slopes and the opening must match the interior of the door and the room

At the first stage, the reference guides are processed. Then they are repainted in the same color as the door leaf. In case of severe wear, plasterboard sheathing is mounted on the guides. In the presence of roughness, perforated corners are used for sheathing. Then the opening is repainted.

Subsequently, it will be required correctly. For their installation, special clamps are used that hold the platbands well. In the absence of clamps, glue or self-tapping screws are used.

If the door is updated only with an opening, and the slopes remain the same, then the decor process is considered incomplete. Various methods are used to finish slopes. More often, special MDF strips are used to update the slopes. You can also install drywall slopes that are fixed to perforated corners or glue.

Another method of finishing the slope is plastering. This process is the most time-consuming and requires experience and qualifications in this case. Experts believe that the best solution is plastering followed by the installation of perlite slopes, which are not cheap. But in the end, you can get strong and durable slopes. They don't get mold.
