Hey brain inventors! In today's project, an electric generator will be built from scratch that converts ordinary water into fuel.

Step 1: What is a hydrogen oxygen generator

A hydrogen / oxygen generator like this uses electricity from a car battery to split water into hydrogen gas and oxygen. (Electricity + 2H20 -> 2H2 + O2). The result is fuel that is much more powerful than gasoline, and only water is released as a result of emissions!

It is a completely pure type of fuel, like the energy of the sun, wind or water, electricity is used only to generate gas.

NOTE: The amount of electrical energy required to generate gas exceeds the total energy that can be obtained from the generator. This is NOT an energy generator, but a simple energy converter.

Step 2: Prepare metal blanks for generator plates

For this project we will need stainless steel parts and plastic pipe fittings. You can purchase these at your local hardware store.

I used 20 gauge stainless steel (0.8mm) and used a hydraulic punch to punch the required holes in the top and bottom of the plates. As a result, we got 12 plates measuring 7.6 x 15.2 cm, 4 plates 3.8 x 15.2 cm, and 3 connecting strips 2.54 cm, 4 - 1.27 cm and 3 - 0.62 cm. A belt sander is used to smooth jagged edges around holes.

Step 3: Increase the contact plane of the plates

Next, I used 100 grit sandpaper to sand the plates diagonally. An “X” can be seen on both sides of the plate. This increases the contact area of ​​the plate and promotes the formation of more gas.

Step 4: Configuring Plates Assemblies

The plates are connected in such a way that the 2 inner plates are connected to one electrical terminal, and the 2 upper plates are connected to the other terminal. Plastic rods, plastic washers and stainless steel nuts help make reliable electrical connections.

The generator plates are assembled in the following order - plate, plastic washers, plate, stainless steel lock nut, and so on until all 8 plates are connected.

After collecting the plates, a 10.1 cm plastic plug must be installed, which is attached at the top with a few stainless steel screws.

Step 5: making the generator case

The body consists of two 10.1 cm plastic adapters, with an inverted 10.1 cm plug at the bottom. The base of the body is an acrylic or plastic tube with a diameter of 10.1 cm. The generator plates and cover are screwed into the upper part.

The water faucet is made in the same manner from an acrylic pipe with a diameter of 5 cm. It must be attached to the side of the device.

Step 6: making the mixer clamps

The clamps can be made from leftover acrylic or plastic pipes, and subsequently glued with glue to the side of the case.

To make the clamps, I cut 1.9 cm from a 5 cm diameter pipe and cut off the top 0.8 cm to form a grip. Next, I attached the resulting workpiece to an acrylic rod and attached it to the side of the generator.

Step 7: Install the check valve

The upper elbow is fitted with a transparent tube and a one-way check valve. Make sure the valve is bleeding gas and not returning to the unit.

Step 8: electrolyte preparation

Distilled water and 2-4 tablespoons of KOH (potassium hydroxide) are used to prepare the electrolyte. Salt or baking soda are also suitable, but over time they can foul and corrode the plates.

I stirred the potassium hydroxide flakes in water, then used a filter to feed the solution into the generator housing (after thorough cleaning).

Note: Potassium hydroxide is a caustic agent and can therefore cause skin burns. Avoid direct contact!

Step 9: final touches

I tested the device using a 12V car battery and jumper cables. The generated gas is collected in a small water bottle and ignited with a flame.

At 12 volts, we get 1.5 liters of gas per minute. If 2 batteries are connected in series, then at a voltage of 24 volts we have 5 liters of gas per minute at the output. That's enough to fill a 4 gallon (15 liter) container in 38 seconds!

Note: Higher voltages present more current in the system, resulting in significant heating. In this case, there is a danger of the plastic housing melting due to the high temperature.

Step 10: How much power is under the hood of our generator?

This system is not intended for use on a vehicle, but simply demonstrates the process of electrolysis of water and the formation of gas.

The amount of oxygen produced depends on the size of the contact surface of the peroxide with the catalyst. Simply put, the more carnations, the more oxygen there will be, but the faster the supply of peroxide will be used up. If we want to saturate the water with oxygen as quickly as possible, then we use a large catalyst, like those screws shown in photo 1. For a long, moderate fall, only a small stump from such a screw is needed.
Security measures: When operating such a generator, you must be sure that the hole in the plug cap is not clogged and oxygen passes through it freely.
From this oxygen generator, a device for the long-term metered supply of hydrogen peroxide to an aquarium is easily obtained, which can partly replace the famous one. To do this, you need to remove the air tube, and fix the bottle in the aquarium with the neck down. The oxygen generated in the bubble will squeeze out the peroxide through a small hole in the plug cap, and the screw cap will insure that the plug does not accidentally fall out and the entire supply of peroxide does not end up in the aquarium at once.
