How to properly lay tiles in the kitchen: step by step instructions. How to lay tiles in the kitchen - choose the material and comprehend the basics of the skill Kitchen tiles correct installation

23-09-2014

From a practical and aesthetic point of view, the most suitable wall covering in the kitchen is a tile. Ceramic tiles can withstand high temperatures, humidity and have a beautiful glossy surface and high durability.

The ceramic apron not only gives an exquisite look to the kitchen, but will also serve for a long time, because impervious to moisture.

There is a wide variety of ceramic tiles on the market, so it is quite easy to find tiles for your kitchen. The main problems arise already when laying tiles, because their cost is almost equal to the price of the material itself. in the kitchen with your own hands?

Wall leveling works

Usually the wall is treated with a primer to ensure better adhesion of the putty.

This operation is carried out in stages and begins to check the verticality and correctness of the surface of the kitchen walls. There are three options for carrying out work, depending on their state:

  • if the walls in your kitchen are quite even, then before you start laying the tiles you need to level them by plastering them with a layer of 2.5 centimeters;
  • with large irregularities, cracks and curvatures on the walls of the kitchen, they can be covered with plasterboard, and then tiled with ceramic tiles;
  • if paint is applied to the walls of the kitchen, then you will have to remove it from the surfaces on which you need to lay the tiles, and then plaster them.

The main thing in this work is to completely align the plane of the walls, otherwise the tiles will lie unevenly and ruin the whole design of your kitchen.

We start by filling all cracks and irregularities with putty and cleaning all protruding parts. We cover all potholes and deep cracks with cement mortar. Apply a layer of plaster and leave it until it dries completely.

Before laying the tile on the surface, it must be cleaned of old paint.

If you have to revet the walls of the kitchen with plasterboard, then choose moisture resistant sheets (such as GVLV). They must be laid on metal profiles (using screws) or wooden slats screwed to the walls of the room with a step of 0.4 meters. The ends of the sheets are cut with a construction knife, making a bevel on them at 45 degrees.

Walls covered with paint are treated with special detergents, and it crumbles. If there is time and opportunity, then the paint is simply scraped off with a sharp spatula. The next stage of work is the application of a layer of plaster 2-3 centimeters thick on the walls of the kitchen.

They continue to work by applying a so-called deep penetration primer to dry plastered walls or drywall, and after it is completely dry, it will be possible to start laying tiles on the walls.

Basic work: putting tiles in the kitchen

To fix the tiles, use ready-made glue in the form of a paste or cement adhesive mixtures.

To start this operation, you need to purchase adhesive for ceramic tiles on the construction market. It is usually bought together with the purchase of tiles. To determine the amount of tiles needed for cladding your kitchen, you need to measure the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe walls of the room, and add 15-20% to trimming and breaking ceramics during the work process. Cut pieces of material are usually placed in places where they will not be visible, such as behind kitchen cabinets.

There are only three main ways to lay tiles in the kitchen:

  • installation at the seams of tiles is the simplest and most common;
  • in the so-called dressing - with the displacement of the upper rows relative to the lower ones (in the horizontal plane) by 1/2 the size of the tile;
  • laying tiles diagonally is a material and labor-intensive process, since a lot of tiles have to be cut.

Having chosen the method, as we will, we begin laying it on the walls of the kitchen.

An electric drill is usually used to fix the profile under the tile.

In order not to be mistaken, we take and place one row of tiles along the walls of the room. Pre-laying is carried out from the middle of the wall if there are openings along the way - doors, windows, etc.

Subsequent work is divided into several stages according to the following technology:

  • a horizontal line is drawn on the wall with a sharp object at the height of the kitchen table (usually the wall at this height is closed by kitchen cabinets). If you decide to cover the wall from floor to ceiling completely, then a wooden lath - a lighthouse or a metal profile (ruler) must be strengthened over the first row of tiles, counting from the floor surface;
  • the metal profile from the drywall is fixed with nails to the wall at the level of the drawn line, leaving a margin of 2-4 centimeters - the bottom row of tiles will rest on it. With a building level and a plumb line, check the correct laying;
  • in the same way, mark and draw a vertical base line - a tile is applied to the upper left edge of the kitchen wall and a plumb line is attached to the tile. They move it along a plumb line (from top to bottom), mark the places where whole plates of material can be installed, and where it will be necessary to apply tile trimming;
  • choose a spatula for work. Its width depends on the dimensions of the tile, for example, if tiles with dimensions of 20 X 32 centimeters are laid, then a large spatula with teeth up to 9-11 millimeters is used. When lining a room with smaller tiles, a tool with a tooth height of up to 7-8 millimeters is chosen. When working, constantly lower the spatula into a bucket of water so that the glue does not stick to the surface of the tool;
  • there is an arrow on the back of the ceramic tiles in one of the bottom corners. Before work, all the material must be laid so that it is located on one side of all the tiles, and make a mark with a pencil on the end side of the laid row - this will make it possible to quickly determine the top and bottom of the tiles when they are glued to the wall;
  • according to the instructions on the package, knead the glue mass and leave it for 10-15 minutes, and then repeat this operation again until the entire mass of glue becomes soft and plastic;
  • put it on the wall with a spatula. To check the evenness of the applied layer, apply the aluminum rules;
  • With a flat spatula, glue is applied to the reverse side of the tile, and unnecessary excess is removed with a serrated "brother" - even grooves should appear on the reverse side of the tile. A lot of glue can be applied directly to the wall, this does not impair the quality of work. The spatula must be held strictly perpendicular, the thickness of the adhesive mass applied to the tile depends on the slope;
  • the tile is applied to the wall and pressed as evenly as possible. When the glue grabs the plate, check the verticality and horizontalness of the laying with a building level;
  • the next tile is glued next to the first one and plastic crosses are installed above and below along the seam between them. Check the laying plane using the rule. There should be no gaps between the tiles;
  • stick the tiles until the walls of the room are completely covered;
  • if it is necessary to lay tiles in the corner and if the whole plate does not fit, then it must be cut using a glass cutter, a metal pencil with a "victorious" tip or a special device for cutting ceramic plates. When cutting a tile along a curly or broken line (for example, under a socket), a grinder with a diamond disc is used;
  • Please note that if you need to adjust the tiles glued to the wall, that this work can be done only for 9-11 minutes, until the glue has finally set. If you did not have time, and the time is up, then you need to remove the tiles, clean the wall from the glue and re-install;
  • to decorate the corner of a wall or window slope, a plastic square is used - with its help, the ends of the tiles are masked. It is chosen two millimeters more than the thickness of the tile used;
  • when the entire surface of the kitchen walls is pasted over with ceramic tiles, they allow the glue to dry for a day and then remove the metal profile from the wall - a lighthouse.

You decided to put a new tile in the kitchen, but you have no idea where to start this process and how to do it? Below you will receive all the necessary information that will help you lay the tiles in the kitchen with your own hands, observing all the technologies.

Today, tiles on the construction market are represented by in a huge variety of styles:

  • classic;
  • country;
  • minimalism and many others.

It is important to choose not only an aesthetic material, but also to choose one that would have excellent technical characteristics.

The tile differs in that it has a porous structure. Its top is covered with glaze. It will not work for the floor, but it can be glued to the walls.

The ceramic tiles are also glazed. The main disadvantage is low resistance to mechanical damage.

The most durable is porcelain stoneware tiles. Porcelain stoneware on the floor for the kitchen is most suitable, since this material is highly wear-resistant. The main disadvantage is that there are very few color shades.

Surface preparation for laying, tools and materials

In order to lay the tiles with your own hands in the kitchen according to all the rules, you will need:

  • tile;
  • plaster;
  • nails;
  • rubber spatula;
  • construction level;
  • metal spatulas;
  • deep-filled primer;
  • plastic crosses and corners;
  • powder for tiles;
  • special machine for cutting tiles;
  • roulette;
  • aluminum rules;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drywall profile;
  • metal ruler;
  • special glue.

Let's start choosing a variety of materials. There are many types of primers, but each of them is practically the same. It must be remembered that you cannot pour the primer back into the canister if you have poured it from there. In addition to being unusable, it will give off a disgusting odor.

The glue on the market is also available in huge varieties. Some recommend using only foreign formulations, others - domestic. Experts, on the other hand, adhere, for the most part, to the opinion that domestic ones are not worse than foreign ones. The main advantage is the lower price, since there is no overpayment of extra money for the brand.

Do-it-yourself kitchen wall alignment

This work is done in several stages. Besides, there are several options for its implementation:

  • if the walls of the kitchen are cracked or uneven, then they are covered with plasterboard and faced with ceramic tiles;
  • when the walls are covered with paint, you will need to remove it and plaster the walls;
  • if the walls are even, then initially you need to plaster them a little with your own hands.

The work begins with the filler filling all the irregularities and cracks. All protruding parts are also removed. Deep cracks and potholes are required to be covered with cement mortar. Then apply the plaster and wait until it is completely dry.

Now you need to apply a deep penetration primer with your own hands. You will also need to wait until it dries completely. After that, you can start laying the tiles.

How to lay tiles: secrets

Each craftsman boasts his own way of how best to lay the tiles. For example, if a wall is covered with paint, then you can not clean it to the end, but only make notches on it.

Secrets of laying tiles (video)

Basic tile laying work

Initially, ceramic tiles are bought on the construction market. To find out how much of it is required, you need to measure the area of \ u200b \ u200bthe walls of the kitchen and add about 20%, which will go to trimming the ceramics. It is these remnants of materials that can be placed behind the cabinets, where they will be simply invisible.

There are three ways, how to do it yourself lay out the tiles correctly:

  1. lay the tiles diagonally. You will have to cut a lot of tiles, so you will need the same amount of material.
  2. Install the tiles at the seams. This method is the most common and simplest.
  3. Bandaging. The upper rows are offset from the lower ones by half the size of the tile.

Once the method has been found, you can start laying tiles. It would be best to put one row of tiles along the walls of the kitchen so as not to be mistaken with the dimensions. First, you need to lay the ceramics next to windows and doors.

  1. A horizontal line is drawn at the height of the kitchen table;
  2. The drywall metal profile is fixed with nails to the wall at the level at which the line was drawn. In reserve, you will need to leave about 4 centimeters and check with the level whether the styling is done correctly.
  3. The vertical line is drawn in the same way. The tile must be attached to the upper edge of the wall, attach a plumb line to it and mark the places where full-fledged plates of material will be installed. Also measure where the tiles will have to be cut.
  4. With a tool such as a tile cutter, tiles can be cut much more easily. If it is not available, you can use a glass cutter. You can then break the pottery on the corner of the stool or table. Since there is a chance of cutting yourself on sharp corners, this must be done extremely carefully.
  5. It is important to choose the right spatula. Its width directly depends on the dimensions of the tiles. To prevent the glue from remaining on the spatula, it is required to constantly lower this tool into a bucket of water.
  6. On one of the corners of the tile, you can find an image of a special arrow. Therefore, the tiles must be laid out in such a way that this arrow is located on one side of each tile. After that, a mark is made from the end with a pencil. In this way, the top and bottom of the tile are marked.
  7. Now you need to knead the glue mass. This can be done by following the instructions on the package. The mixture should be pliable and soft. This operation may require an electric mixer or a screwdriver drill. After that, the glue can be applied with your own hands to the wall using a spatula. You can use aluminum rules to make sure the layer is even.
  8. Now take a flat trowel and apply glue to the back of the tile. The spatula is held in the hands only perpendicularly.
  9. The tile is applied to the wall and pressed evenly. With the help of a building level, you will need to check whether everything has been done exactly.
  10. Next to the first ceramic tiles, the second is laid. The laying plane is checked by the aluminum rule. In the same way, you can put the rest of the tiles to the end of the wall.
  11. The glue sets within 10 minutes. This time should be enough for the tile to be adjusted if necessary.
  12. With the help of a plastic square, slopes and corners of the walls are made out.
  13. After all the tiles are laid, the glue should dry completely.

Detailed tile laying process (video)

Ceramic tiles are, first of all, an aesthetic element of kitchen design. It needs to be chosen in such a way that it organically complements the kitchen.

Plain tiles are more suitable if an exquisite kitchen set is installed in the room. With ordinary furniture, it is best to do the opposite, that is, lay out tiles in a variety of colors.

If you have even a little experience and knowledge of how to lay tiles in the kitchen, it is worth spending a couple of days laying the tiles. It is considered a good solution due to its low cost, moisture resistance and practicality. When choosing a material, one should take into account external indicators, quality, country of origin, etc. There are a number of special requirements for floor tiles, as the performance of the floor is important to the kitchen.

Types of tiles

Today there is a huge selection of floor tiles. The variety of styles and trends never ceases to amaze. Classic style, minimalism, bright interiors - you can embody a variety of ideas. Floor tiles create the right mood and solve any problem when creating a specific idea.

In addition to the appearance, the coating must be of high quality and practical. He must have good technical characteristics.

Tile is fundamentally different from wood finishing materials. It is made from clay and contains various additives. After forming, it is pressed and fired. As a result, the finished tiles differ in strength and appearance. The outer surface is then painted and given a glossy or matte finish.

The tiles are usually quite porous and covered with glaze. It can only be used indoors and for wall decoration. Tiles are usually used to decorate the walls in the bathroom or create an apron in the kitchen.

Ceramic tiles have their own characteristics. It is also covered with glaze on one side. This glaze not only has a decorative value, but also protects against moisture. The ceramic product is more durable and harder, it is resistant to mechanical damage and active abrasion. The most durable material is porcelain stoneware, which is great for the floor. It has practically no flaws, except for a small range of color solutions.

Tools and preparatory work

Before you start laying floor tiles in the kitchen, you need to purchase the right material and all the necessary tools:

  • Long level or rule;
  • Bubble level;
  • Roulette, pencil;
  • Primer roller;
  • Spatula with 12 mm notches;
  • Rubber hammer;
  • Grinder;
  • Primer;
  • Wooden wedges and crosses;
  • Rubber trowel and grout.

The first step is to mark out to calculate the amount of material. For a monochromatic coating, this is very simple to do: 10% is added to the total kitchen area. This supply will be quite enough. If a tile with an ornament is planned, then the stock needs to be made more, since there will be more waste. You can do this: if the dimensions of the tiles are known, then the number of pieces is considered so that it can be laid along the entire length and width of the kitchen, taking into account the trimming. If the clipping is very narrow, then the entire layout needs to be shifted. Therefore, a layout drawing is first drawn up.

The base surface is carefully primed. It is important that the primer is deeply penetrated. After it dries, you can start the main work. If the screed is even in the kitchen, the installation process will be pleasant and easy, and the consumption of glue will decrease. In addition, a level base ensures that the tiles will not crack during use. It is recommended not to skimp on preparatory work and to make a rough screed with waterproofing.

Laying tiles in the kitchen

From the entrance, a distance equal to the width of the tile is marked with a gap of 5 mm from the wall. So that it does not move, wooden pegs are inserted in the gaps. A cord is pulled along these marks and beaten off so that an even line remains on the floor. She draws the first row.

On the back of each tile there are auxiliary arrows that indicate the direction of laying. But after applying the glue, this arrow is not visible, so it is better to initially make a mark on the back with a pencil.

The first landmark tile is located near the doorway. A mark is placed in the center of the door and the tiles are placed there without glue. You can leave several paths without tiles so that you can go back or start from the opposite side of the entrance.

The glue is mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions. The required amount of water is poured into the bucket and glue is added, the mixture is constantly stirred with a construction mixer. A small amount of the solution can be stirred by hand with a wooden stick. You need to achieve the consistency of thick sour cream and leave the glue for ten minutes, then stir again and you can start finishing work in the following order:

  1. The adhesive is applied evenly with a normal trowel. After that, you need to run the glue over the glue with a notched trowel.
  2. Excess glue is removed.
  3. The first tile should be placed in the pre-marked place and pressed intensively to the floor. Its evenness is determined by a short level. If it lies unevenly, then on the edge that lies higher, you need to knock with a rubber mallet.
  4. The laying movement is directed to the right. The cross can be passed along the seam to remove the glue so that there is a place for grouting, and then the cross is inserted between the tiles.
  5. After laying the first row, a long level is placed (you can use the rule instead). This is how the overall evenness indicator is checked. If there are errors, then uneven elements are removed and put back. There is only 15 minutes for this, otherwise the glue will begin to set.
  6. If trimming is needed, then it is done with a grinder with a smooth disc.
  7. The next rad also fits from the beacon in the center of the door and continues in both directions.
  8. In places where pipes pass, cutouts or holes are made on the tiles. You can use a drill bit to make a hole.

After the final laying, the floor surface is again checked with a level in different directions. After a day, the seams are cleaned and filled with grout. After half an hour, you can remove the excess grout with a damp sponge. After a day, the surface is thoroughly cleaned and can be ready for use. The gaps between the tile and the wall are closed with plastic or wooden skirting boards.

If you once spend a couple of days to lay out tiles on the kitchen floor, it will be enough for you for 10-15 years of use. Due to its low cost, practicality and exceptional moisture resistance, this material is considered the best solution for rooms with high humidity and stress. In the last article we talked about, and now we will take a step-by-step look at how to lay the tiles in the kitchen correctly.

The choice of floor tiles for the kitchen depends on whether you want to get a solid color or ornament, prefer the quality of foreign materials, or inexpensive Russian tiles are more suitable for you. In this article, finishing will be carried out using the example of embossed Ukrainian stone tiles from Inter Cerama measuring 35 * 35 cm (light brown BARI collection).

Required tools and materials

For styling you will need:

  • Two-meter level or rule for checking the plane;
  • Bubble level 40-50 cm;
  • Tape measure, pencil, paint cord;
  • Brush or roller for applying the primer;
  • Spatula: regular and 12 mm notched comb;
  • Rubber hammer;
  • Grinder with a diamond disc;
  • Deep penetration primer;
  • Tile adhesive;
  • Plastic wedges and crosses for 3 mm seams;
  • Grout and rubber trowel.

Preparatory work

If you have chosen a monochromatic design, as in our case, it is not difficult to do this. Consider the floor area and add 10% for the stock.

Or make it easier - knowing the size of the tile, count how many pieces you need to lay out along the length and width of the room, taking into account the trimming.

If you choose a patterned floor finish, be aware that the amount of waste will increase.

Prime the screed liberally with any deep-penetrating primer and wait until dry.

The presence of an even screed will not only greatly simplify your work and reduce the consumption of glue, but will also guarantee that after laying the tiles will not crack due to uneven adhesion of glue of different thicknesses (it shrinks at different rates when it dries). Therefore, do not spare the money, and before putting the tiles in the kitchen, make at least a rough screed with waterproofing.

Markup

From the wall where the entrance to the kitchen is located, measure a distance equal to the width of the tile, taking into account a gap of 5 mm, which will then disappear under the skirting board.

Pull the paint cord along the marks and beat off the line. The first row of tiles will follow it.

There are auxiliary arrows on the seamy side for tiling in one direction. But when you smear it with glue, then this arrow will not be visible. To fix this, immediately mark the ends with a pencil.

Make a mark in the center of the door and place the tile without glue there as a guide.

This object has an exit to another room through the loggia, so the tiles in the kitchen are laid from the door to make it easier to make the markings and whole rows went along the center of the entrance. In other cases, you can choose not to lay several paths of tiles in order to leave your way back, or start from the opposite wall.

Glue preparation

According to the manufacturer's instructions, pour the required amount of water into a 10-liter bucket and gradually add glue there. In this case, the mixture must be constantly stirred with a mixer or perforator with a whisk attachment.

Try to achieve a thick sour cream consistency and let the glue ripen for 5-10 minutes, then stir it again before applying.

Laying floor tiles in the kitchen

  • Apply the adhesive evenly to the tiles themselves using a conventional trowel. Then run the comb at right angles over it to keep the same grooves of the glue.
  • Glue application

  • Throw excess glue back into the bucket, and it is better to put the spatula in water so that the glue does not freeze on it.
  • Place the first tile to the right of the previously laid "beacon". Align the edges along the line and press down to the floor. Then we check with a short level whether it is even.
  • If one of the edges is uneven, tap it with a rubber mallet and then check it again with a level.
  • We continue laying in the direction to the right. Insert plastic crosses between the tiles. Before inserting the cross, run it along the seam to remove excess glue, otherwise, when it dries, it will be very difficult to do. And in order not to accidentally move the tile towards the wall, put plastic wedges there.
  • To make it easier to align the tiles with each other, there is one simple way: before pressing the next tile, place a level on it so that it hangs from the side above the previous element. So you will see how much more to lower it until the level touches the previous one.

  • We finish laying the first row to the right and check the overall level using a long level. If it is not there, a long rule or even a flat profile of 1.5-2 meters with a small bubble level attached will do.
  • If unevenness is found, you have 15 minutes after laying to carefully remove the crooked tiles and throw in the mortar, or remove the excess. If more time has passed, the glue will begin to set, and you will need to first remove the tile and clean its surface and the place under it with a scraper.
  • You may need to trim near the wall. High-quality floor tiles are much harder than wall tiles, and it is better to cut them with a grinder with a smooth diamond disc or an electric tile cutter.
  • We put the trim and finish the row on the left side of the kitchen doorway.
  • We also start the second row from our beacon in the center of the door and go to both sides of it. We check each tile by level and match the corners with the adjacent ones. Finishing the floor is greatly simplified if you have high-quality tiles, but a cheap domestic one can differ by a few millimeters even within the same box.
  • When we reach the pipes, we use the grinder to make cutouts for them. Sometimes you need to make round holes. For this, there are special drill bits - crowns and ballerinas.

Conclusion

At the end of the work, we check again the floor surface with a long level in different directions. If all is well, in a day we clean the seams from the remnants of glue and fill them with a suitable grout tone. After 30 minutes, the excess grout is removed with a damp sponge, and after another day, the surface of the tile is finally washed from streaks and is completely ready for use.

The production and appearance of ceramic tiles is now improved, but the popularity of ceramics has remained unchanged for centuries.

What is so good about ceramic tiles?

  • versatility of use - from fireplace design to balconies, kitchens, building facades;
  • choice of color, size and shape for every taste;
  • resistance to various aggressive substances;
  • moisture resistant, heat resistant;
  • strength and durability;
  • it is easy to look after her;
  • made from natural raw materials.

The relevance of tiles on the walls

Thanks to the listed positive properties of tiles, use in the kitchen will be the right decision. A variety of colors, textures and sizes, this material fits into the interior of any style - from country to minimalism. The tile will protect against water, hot steam, oil splashes during cooking. The apron along the work surfaces will be nice and clean, as the tiles are easy to keep clean.

What kind of tiles can be put in the kitchen

Any ceramic tile can be used in the kitchen to decorate walls, a backsplash. To avoid mistakes when choosing, follow the recommendations of the professionals:

  • the tiles are chosen after they have decided on the style and color scheme of the kitchen set and other elements of the kitchen interior;
  • buy tiles with a 10-15% margin in case of a fight when laying, trimming;
  • the required number of tiles is calculated by the master who will be engaged in laying it. The seller in the salon does not see the walls and features of the space, the calculation will be inaccurate;
  • the size of the tiles is matched to the size of the apron. The large format of ceramics in a small kitchen looks like a losing streak.

For an apron, tiles are more often used:

  1. The size is 10x10. Less pruning, easier to install if there are many corners and bends in the surface.
  2. Clinker tiles, or hog. Suitable in any style - loft, classic, country, art deco, minimalism and other styles.
  3. Real mosaics from 1x1 cm to 5x5 cm, or imitation with grooves that create the effect of seams between mosaic pieces.
  4. Medium format tiles - 15x15, 20x20, 20x30, 25x30 cm.

If the features of the interior or the size of the room require other options, feel free to choose what suits you.

A bold solution, for example, would be to decorate the walls with photo tiles. This is a ceramic tile, made individually, with a photo applied

DIY Technician Options

The tiles are laid on the walls in various ways. Most often used:

  • "Seam in seam" - tiles are laid in rows strictly one above the other, this is the classic way of laying;
  • "In a run" - the second row of tiles is shifted in relation to the first so that the seams between the tiles of the second row are above the center of the tiles of the first row, this is repeated in each subsequent row;
  • "Diagonally" is a laborious method that requires careful marking of diagonals and trimming of tiles;
  • "Chess" - combine tiles of two contrasting colors;
  • "Modular grid" - use three or more tiles of different shapes and sizes, distributing them randomly horizontally and vertically.

The tile is laid out in one of these ways, sometimes a combination of methods is used in the same room, highlighting different zones with this design.

A certain way of laying the tiles will help to visually correct the size of the room.

How to glue ceramic tiles on the wall in the kitchen

Laying ceramic tiles for different rooms and surfaces has general principles:

  1. A laying plan is drawn up. The required number of tiles is calculated, taking into account trimming, battle.
  2. Prepare the walls for laying.
  3. Remove old coatings. If necessary, the walls are leveled. Then they are primed for better adhesion (adhesion) of the tile to the wall.
  4. Next, they start laying the tiles.

How to lay an apron

First, determine the height of the apron. This is the space from the countertop of the kitchen set to the wall cabinets, 60-70 cm. To avoid unnecessary trimming, the height of the apron is adjusted, and the whole tile looks better than the halves.

The first row of tiles is launched 2-3 cm below the level of the working surface. The last row is run under the wall cabinets at the same distance.

Laying technology:

  1. On the prepared wall, using a level, draw a horizontal line for the beginning of the first row. Under this line, a metal profile or a wooden block is attached to the wall. This support will prevent the tiles from sliding down under their own weight.
  2. Laying the tiles begins from the middle of the wall, from the most prominent central place, moving from the center to the edges.
  3. The glue solution is kneaded immediately before laying. Follow the instructions on the packaging. A dry component is poured into the water, stirred until smooth. Defend for 10-15 minutes. Mix again.
  4. With a spatula with teeth, an adhesive solution is applied to the wall, or to the tiles, as it is more convenient. Applied to the wall, resting the lower edge on the profile, press evenly. They tap with a rubber mallet so that excess air comes out.
  5. Mounting crosses are placed at the upper and lower corners of the tile, which regulate the thickness of the seam.

Do you need tile joints? Yes. When tiles expand from elevated temperatures, they protect against cracking. They also compensate for inaccuracies in the dimensions of the tiles.

  1. Apply glue to the next tile. The steps are repeated as with the first. In this way, the entire first row is laid out. Do not forget about the crosses between the fragments.
  2. After gluing ten tiles, remove excess glue with a damp cloth. If this is not done, the dried solution will be difficult to remove.
  3. The second row begins after the first is completely dry. This is in a day.
  4. Having finished gluing all the rows, the masonry is allowed to dry. Then they tap with a mallet in search of a dull sound that speaks of emptiness. Such an element is removed and glued again, carefully applying the adhesive composition to the tile.
