The house made of laminated veneer lumber is painted with painters oil. Professional painting of glued laminated timber houses. Varieties of coloring compositions for outdoor use

The answer to the question " What paint to paint a house made of laminated veneer lumber? " is very important for creating good conditions for the long-term and flawless operation of the building. Painting is necessary as damage from sunlight, rain and snow is likely. In addition, the use of different shades allows you to give a unique and unusual appearance.

How do we carry out quality painting?

How to paint a house made of laminated veneer lumber from the outside?

The problem is solved in our company quickly and efficiently. clients with modern materials. They stand out for their strong, wear-resistant structure. Reliably protect the structure from mold and rot. They do not collapse under the influence of moisture and temperature drops. They do not lose their original qualities even in non-standard climatic conditions.

We use various impregnations, paints and varnishes. They have an absolutely harmless ecological basis. They reliably isolate the external elements of the building from negative natural factors. Transparent materials enhance the beauty of the wood grain, creating an original and unique experience. The color shade changes slightly depending on the number of layers applied.

Opaque coatings are used less frequently. Behind them is a natural pattern of wooden foundations. Such dyes provide a vapor barrier film with varying degrees of haze. This improves the protective qualities of the house from the ingress of ultraviolet radiation and contributes to the removal of unwanted moisture.

We have reasonable and affordable prices!

In our company, the price for the service "Paint a house from glued beams" is set within acceptable, economical limits. It allows the execution of orders of customers with different financial capabilities. We purchase paints and varnishes without intermediaries from original and trusted suppliers. We carry out the most complex and large-scale works at the optimal time.

Glued laminated timber has an extremely attractive appearance. Despite this, homeowners often decide to paint the material. In most cases, they are guided by two defining motives: the desire to make the house even more aesthetically pleasing and the desire to maximally protect glued laminated timber from the negative effects of environmental factors. Painting a house made of laminated veneer lumber can be done both outside and inside the building.

Interior painting works

If the construction of the house was carried out in accordance with the requirements of the project documentation and the observance of the necessary technologies, the internal painting work is mainly of a decorative nature. Painting laminated veneer lumber inside the house has two main goals:

  • to give surfaces an attractive look, decorate, while emphasizing the natural and natural attractiveness of wood;
  • if possible, protect the surfaces from all kinds of mechanical defects (scratches, chips, etc.).

As a rule, to perform this type of work, the following are used:

  • simple paints and varnishes - wax, special oils, drying oil. Their task is to reveal the natural attractiveness of wooden surfaces to the maximum, giving them a unique and aesthetic golden and glossy shade;
  • wax mastics. Wax-based mastics are excellent for glued laminated timber. There are several reasons for this:
    • imparting an original and attractive silky structure to the surface of the material;
    • improvement of operational properties - when cleaning, the walls are wiped with a regular rag;
    • the ability to eliminate visible defects in the surface of laminated veneer lumber;
  • synthetic or water-based varnishes. They are used at the request of the customer to give the surface of the material shades of various colors. The advantages of aqueous formulations are the absence of a pungent odor, drying speed. With synthetic varnishes, even with a high drying rate, there are advantages in the richness of shades and the durability of the coating.

Now on the building materials market there is a wide range of various varnishes, paints and mastics, which are used when painting a wooden house from glued beams. Anyone can easily choose the finishing material that is most suitable for him, both in terms of properties and performance, and cost.

Outdoor painting works

When painting glued laminated timber from the outside, it becomes more important to give additional protection to wooden structures from environmental influences. Outside painting of laminated veneer lumber pursues two main tasks:

  • protection of house structures from the negative effects of environmental factors. The main ones are:
    • decay, mold and fungi (antiseptic compounds are used to protect against them);
    • ultraviolet (translucent or opaque compounds are used to protect against ultraviolet rays from the sun);
    • moisture (gets into the pores of the wood, mainly through the ends - their impregnation with special sealants serves as protection);
  • giving the building an aesthetic and attractive appearance, while preserving, if possible, the organic nature of the wood. For this, translucent compositions, various oil paints, etc. are used.

Features of painting

Before you start painting a glued beam house, you should familiarize yourself with the rules and stages of work:

  • sanding walls. Glued laminated timber has an even surface, but grinding will clean it of dirt and even out microcracks. In addition, sanding improves the adhesion of the substrate and subsequent coatings, and also gives an attractive appearance to subsequent coatings;
  • applying a special sealant to the ends of the bars. Through the ends, mainly moisture gets into the pores of the wood, therefore this stage of work is very important to increase the service life of laminated veneer lumber structures;
  • antiseptic treatment of laminated veneer lumber surface. Antiseptics prevent wood from rotting, by the phenomenon of mold or mildew;
  • padding. The task of the primers used is to increase the adhesion of the surface with the subsequent topcoat. After applying the primer, let it dry;
  • painting of walls. Walls made of laminated veneer lumber are painted in 2-3 layers (more often - 3). Each next is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. The recommended number of coats guarantees an attractive and durable matt or glossy surface, depending on the material chosen;
  • after 2-3 months from the date of work, re-sealing is carried out. It is accompanied by inspection of surfaces in order to identify possible defects and their subsequent elimination. Also, at the same time, platbands and window sills of the house are sealed.

Stages of work are given for external painting of glued laminated timber. The workflow inside is simpler, but generally the same, with minor adjustments.

Outdoor work is carried out at an air temperature of at least plus 5 degrees and at normal humidity. It is not recommended to carry out work in rain or snow, despite the advertising statements of some manufacturers of paints and varnishes.

Manufacturers of paints and varnishes

From the variety of paints and varnishes suitable for painting laminated veneer lumber, a number of their manufacturers stand out.

Tikkurila (Finland)

The most famous manufacturer that has been successfully operating on the Russian market for a long time. In addition to Finnish factories, not so long ago he opened several in Russia. The products are of extremely high quality, wide assortment and relatively low cost. Given sufficient financial resources, most builders will prefer this particular manufacturer, all other things being equal.

Zobel and Osmo (Germany)

Two German manufacturers representing the opposite approach to positioning their products. Zobel works in the budget segment, the materials are of high quality, however, they are not leaders in this. Osmo, on the other hand, focuses on the wealthy buyer, offering him products of the highest quality and unique characteristics and properties for a great price.

Thermika (Russia)

Leading manufacturer among Russian companies in the market segment. The emphasis is on the low cost of production, as a result of which the quality does not always meet high standards. Nevertheless, due to the low price, the company remains competitive in the market.

Conclusion

The decision to paint a house made of laminated veneer lumber is made by the owner, mainly with two main goals: to protect the material from the negative effects of the external environment and make it even more attractive, while maintaining the beauty and aesthetics of wood. Competent execution of painting work will not only improve the appearance of the building, but also extend its service life.

Glued laminated timber paint, technologies, features, professional advice

You cannot buy one paint for laminated veneer lumber and paint the whole house with it. It is not recommended to use the same coating technology for the facade, fences, and the interior of the building. It is rash to order a "cheaper" glued laminated timber finish and count on an extended warranty. Do you want to know more about what paint to paint a wooden house and how to find a professional artist? Below we have collected expert advice, as well as photos of painted wooden houses outside and inside.

Painting a house made of laminated veneer lumber: interior and exterior work

Bright yet natural façade colors

  1. The risk group includes railings, verandah posts, terraces, fences, external support posts and other external structural elements that are not protected from precipitation and sunlight. For finishing, a coating with a thickness of up to 20 microns is required, the plastic film stretches without tears or cracks.
  2. The facade and the lower part of the eaves are protected by a roof. Direct sunlight hits the tree 2-3 hours a day, and rain passes over the surface in passing, without lingering. For decoration, a thicker glazing or covering layer is used, which reliably protects the wood, gives it the desired shade.
  3. Internal finishing of laminated veneer lumber. The surface of the walls inside the premises is considered stable, therefore it is permissible to use multi-layer wear-resistant products. The main requirement is the environmental safety of materials.

Dozens of natural shades available

Colour

When working with the outside, it is advisable to choose a neutral color or keep the natural shade of the wood. Too dark walls heats up quickly, this can cause deformation, resin release. Possible wood defects are more clearly visible on too light ones.

Adhesion

High-quality paint, subject to technology, is so deeply connected to the wood that it does not separate even after damage. For a tighter connection, it is necessary to strictly follow the technology: apply layers correctly, maintain pauses, remove dust, work with moisture in mind.

Composition of paint for laminated veneer lumber

When building eco-friendly cottages from laminated veneer lumber, they do not use oil or nitro paint, formulations based on chemicals that are hazardous to health. The main rule is to choose a product with the least amount of "chemistry" or with guaranteed weathering of an unpleasant odor, a quick-drying mixture that does not emit toxins when heated, does not interfere with natural air exchange.

  1. Water based paints. They are considered the most environmentally friendly coating, they are diluted with water. After its evaporation, only a binder remains on the surface - acrylic, harmless, absolutely neutral.
  2. Oil impregnation. Penetrates deep into the pores, after hardening forms a strong protective film. To increase the strength, sedatives are added to the composition - bonding agents based on metal oxides. Oil impregnation is more often used for outdoor use.
  3. Alkyd paints. When working, a solvent with a pungent odor is used, but after evaporation, the coating becomes safe. The main disadvantage is that alkyd particles are too small, which fill the pores and block air exchange. As a result, the tree loses its ability to remove excess moisture.

It is best to use safe water-based paints. This is exactly what the GOOD WOOD division, which is responsible for decorating houses from glued beams, does.

Verified brands

We are talking specifically about professional finishing products. These compounds are specially designed for wooden buildings that meet the safety requirements:

  • Sikkens,
  • Sedipan,
  • Remmers,
  • Zobel,
  • Teknos,
  • Farbraum.

GOOD WOOD used the products of most famous manufacturers. We are currently working with Farbraum paint. The SEDIPAN WACT 650 range is suitable for finishing the facade and interior of the house made of laminated veneer lumber. The list contains glazing (translucent) and opaque (hide the texture) coatings. For unstable outdoor structures (railings, stairs, railings, support posts) we use SEDIPAN WACT 640, an anti-delamination agent. We use SEDIPAN WV 024 to seal the ends.

When to paint a house from laminated veneer lumber

Better right away: even for large companies, factory protection is designed for 6 months

Shipping antiseptic is not applied by every manufacturer. In GOOD WOOD, antiseptic treatment of a ready-made kit and packaging in a protective film are included in the technical process.

When ordering a house kit from the manufacturer of laminated veneer lumber, be sure to check whether the wood has been processed before shipment. It may be necessary to apply the composition immediately after the completion of construction.

If you tighten up with processing, then the outer part begins to fade, pests - bacteria, insects, fungi - enter the wood. Usually, when building cottages from laminated veneer lumber, the walls are painted after the doors and windows are installed.

Re-painting

The service life of the coating depends on the properties of the paint, adherence to technology, and the position of the building. Solar sides will burn out faster, renewal may be required after 3-5 years. On the shady side, the paint lasts longer - up to 7 years or more.

Winter or summer?

In practice, the processing season does not matter - painting works are carried out at any temperature. See how this is implemented in GOOD WOOD: work in the greenhouses is in full swing, although it is snowing outside.

Teplus maintains the right temperature for paint application

Winter work is a little more expensive - the cost of using additional equipment is included in the price of painting a wooden house outside. But by the spring, the owner receives walls completely protected from moisture and bright sun.

In summer, it is sometimes even more difficult to work - dust can accumulate on the paint and ruin the coating. To avoid defects, use quick-drying products. Water-based paints dry in 30 minutes, ready for overcoating in 1.5-2 hours.

The only limitation when painting is humidity requirements. It is better not to paint wet wood: adhesion deteriorates, service life decreases, defects may appear. Before processing, the master must check the moisture content of the surface. If this does not happen, it is better to clarify by what criteria the readiness of the wall for painting is determined.

Humidity check is a mandatory stage of work

Processing technology

  1. Choice of color and paint on the wall.
  2. Elimination of defects, chips, mechanical damage.
  3. Grinding, dust removal.
  4. Application of the first layer (primer).
  5. Light intermediate sanding.
  6. Application of the base and finishing layer.
  7. Measurement of the coating thickness at different points.

If ordinary paint is used, then an antiseptic treatment is carried out before priming. When using "three in one" products, the antiseptic is already included in the composition.

Cheap? Check what is included in the price!

Crews often quote the price of painting a house without taking into account materials, tools, transportation costs, and other related costs. As a result, the cost doubles. GOOD WOOD lists the price of painting a house for 1 m², it includes everything - from consultation on the choice of color and tinting to organizing the stay of the brigade on the site. When building houses from glued laminated timber on a turnkey basis, the price of painting works is discussed separately.

Advice: when choosing a brigade, pay attention to the examples of work. Visit completed (or better yet, ongoing) properties. Ask for certificates from the paint manufacturer - these are not just pieces of paper, they are issued after training. Passing a master class from the manufacturers of a specific product, strict adherence to technology and work experience is an excellent combination for high-quality painting of a house made of laminated veneer lumber.

One of the GOOD WOOD houses after processing

At GOOD WOOD seminars, painting of houses made of laminated veneer lumber is often discussed. Do you want to learn all the subtleties of technology? Call and specify the date.

Correct painting of a house from a bar not only gives its appearance the desired shades, but also protects the wood from various harmful influences. In this article we will talk about the technology of painting a wooden house, as well as about the various materials that are used for this work.

Why do you need to paint a house from laminated veneer lumber

The main purpose of painting is to give the external and internal appearance of the house the necessary shades, to change the visual perception of the external and internal surfaces of the timber and the house as a whole. Correct painting does not hide the texture of the wood, but gives it new colors and emphasizes the pattern of the timber. However, the application of paint or varnish is the final event in a whole complex of actions aimed at protecting walls from damage by dampness, mold, ultraviolet light and fire. Therefore, before painting the walls from the inside and outside, they are treated with antifungal, anti-decay, etc. Often, treatment with protective substances and painting occur simultaneously, but this approach is only permissible with cheap paints. It is undesirable to mix more expensive paints with reagents and protective preparations in order to avoid discoloration. The final painting of a house from a bar is varnishing. It does not change the color of the wood, but it protects against ultraviolet radiation and scratches.

The choice of paint for timber

The choice of paint depends on the quality of the timber. If the timber is made of wood with a beautiful pattern, then impregnations, transparent and translucent varnishes are used. If you do not like the pattern and texture of the timber, you can use opaque paints. In this case, a house made of laminated veneer lumber will lose one of its main advantages - the unique pattern of the texture of natural wood. In addition, all materials that are used to paint a house from a bar must pass water vapor well. Otherwise, the tree will not be able to absorb and release moisture, which means it will begin to damp and rot. In addition, the microclimate of the premises will worsen, because in a normally painted house made of timber, the walls absorb excess moisture in the rooms and take it out, from where it evaporates into the atmosphere. Therefore, paints must be chosen on a water basis, and varnishes on oil.

When choosing impregnations, paints and other paint and varnish coatings (LKM), keep in mind that very good ones are produced in Russia, but they do not make any normal paints for wood. Therefore, you will have to choose only from imported materials. The best wood paints are produced by the following companies:

  • Zobel;
  • Osmo;
  • Renner;
  • Tikkurila;
  • Sikkens;
  • Teknos;
  • Finncolor;
  • Belinka.

Good results are obtained using the Teknos Futura series paint, which forms a vapor-permeable film with varying degrees of mattness. Osmo Holz-Schutz Öl Lasur is the most effective universal remedy. This natural oil-based product protects wood from ultraviolet radiation, does not interfere with moisture removal and gives the wood different shades, depending on the number indicated on the can.

When painting a house that has been standing for more than 5 years, a bleach such as Tikkurila Homeenpoisto will come in handy. It will allow you to remove blue from the surface of the timber without changing its texture. In addition to factory-made paints and oils, homemade formulations can be used, which give very good results. There is no single recipe or "correct" ratio of components, because everyone selects the proportions for themselves. Here are the most commonly used ingredients for such formulations:

  • natural turpentine (gum);
  • linseed oil;
  • wood resin;
  • beeswax;
  • palm wax;
  • water;
  • various natural pigments, dyes and colors.

How to paint a wooden house correctly

The technology of painting a house made of laminated veneer lumber includes the following operations:

  • removal of old paint (not necessary for new houses);
  • rough grinding;
  • treatment with protective impregnations;
  • medium grinding;
  • treatment with impregnation colors and fine grinding;
  • applying a protective varnish.

Coarse sanding

Preparation for painting begins with removing the old paintwork (LCP). In new homes, this procedure is not required. If you do not remove the old paint, then you will not be able to properly treat the wood with protective agents, as well as sand it to remove minor scratches, improve color and texture. Sanding can be done either by hand with coarse sandpaper (numbers 20 to 60) or with a sander using medium sandpaper (numbers 100 to 140). If you are using a sander, do not use coarse sandpaper on it. A trembling hand or an awkward movement will lead to the formation of a hole on the surface of the bar and you will have to spend a lot of effort to eliminate it. In the process of rough sanding, you remove the old paintwork, as well as remove the top layer of wood, which has become discolored and gray under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. The maximum layer that can be removed during coarse sanding is 2 mm, but it is better not to bring it to such values and limit (if possible) a thickness of 0.5–1 mm.

Treatment with protective impregnations

Most protective impregnations penetrate to a shallow depth (up to 5 mm) and rains wash them out of the wood after a few years. Therefore, re-treatment with impregnations after 3-5 years is a reliable means of protecting the timber from rot, mold, various bugs and fire. Impregnations produced by the Russian companies Senezh and Neomid are well suited for a new house made of laminated veneer lumber that has stood for several years. The products from Tikkurill are somewhat worse and noticeably more expensive. When treating with impregnations, keep in mind that they should only be applied to well-dried wood. That is, it is necessary to process a house made of laminated veneer lumber at the beginning of autumn, before the onset of the rainy season. Impregnations are applied with brushes, rollers or spray guns, as it is more convenient for anyone. Neither method has any significant advantages.

Medium grinding

After treatment with water-based impregnations, pile rises on the glued beam, which must be removed using a grinder. Grinding depth should not exceed 0.5 mm. Grinding is carried out after the impregnation is completely absorbed and the pile has risen. If possible, move the sander against the lint, this will improve the quality of the sanded surface and reduce the thickness of the removed layer. It is undesirable to perform this operation manually due to the high probability of scuffing of the pile. Use a size 160 to 200 sanding paper on the sander.

Treatment with impregnation colors and fine sanding

Perform this operation 20-30 hours after sanding, so that the tree has time to fully absorb antiseptics and other protective agents. Apply impregnations with a brush, roller or spray gun. If you use universal products (Osmo Holz-Schutz Öl Lasur and analogues), then the treatment with protective agents and colors is combined, and then sanded as described above. However, using generic remedies is not the best choice. and fungicides in their composition are much inferior to specialized Russian preparations, so the protection of the tree will be insufficient. After applying water-based impregnations, the bar is again covered with pile and must be sanded again. The only difference from the sanding described above is in the size of sandpaper from 180 to 220.

Protective varnish application

The use of varnishes based on natural resins creates a thin, durable film that is permeable to steam but impervious to water. In addition, many varnishes can be mixed with different colors. In this case, the use of impregnation colors is not required. Thick protective compounds are applied with a brush, carefully rubbing them into the wood. Liquid formulations are applied using a spray gun. If you do not want to use a thick composition, dilute it with the same solvent indicated on the can. Most often, white spirit, gasoline or water are used as a solvent. Apply a thin layer of water-based formulations, allowing to dry for at least 5 hours. This will save you from the appearance of pile on the timber and the need to sand the surface of the house. If you are using oil-based formulations, place them in 3-5 coats. If you apply water-based compounds, then the number of coats should be at least 10, preferably 15. This will create a protective layer of the required thickness. When working with varnishes inside the house, be sure to open all windows and doors to avoid poisoning. Use safety goggles, rubber gloves and respirators.

Painting a house made of laminated veneer lumber from the outside is considered by many to be unnecessary. And, in fact, the high-quality walls made of wooden blanks look simply gorgeous, and this beauty simply “doesn’t raise a hand”.

But if you leave everything as it is, in a few years there will be no trace of all the splendor. Therefore, houses made of wooden beams should, if not be painted, then at least treated with special protective compounds.

When do you need to paint your glued laminated timber house outside?

  • First of all, the main task of paintwork is to increase the attractiveness of the surface to be treated. In the case of a wooden wall, you can easily emphasize the natural beauty of the material, since the cut of wood already looks quite aesthetically pleasing.
  • The wood darkens over time, and sooner or later its texture will have to be masked. For this purpose, compositions with a higher hiding power are used, which make it possible to hide the pattern on the surface.
  • Paint compositions, impregnations and mastics can protect wood from the negative effects of the external environment. The time of preservation of natural beauty depends on the level of protection.
  • In addition, the prevention of wood contact with microorganisms and moisture is positively reflected in its operational characteristics: a well-painted house retains its load-bearing capacity longer and does not rot.
  • Another factor that negatively affects the condition of the timber is UV radiation. UV filters help protect against it, namely the substances that are part of most modern paints.
As you can see, there are many arguments in favor of painting a house from glued laminated timber outside. Now you need to decide on the type of paint and the best technology for its application.

What to choose for painting?

Internal formulations

The main task of the interior paint is to give the wooden walls an aesthetic appearance. The maximum protection inside the house is required, for this reason we recommend focusing not on the decorations.

In the role of materials that can be used to process walls from a bar inside, experts advise using:

  • Impregnating compounds - waxes, drying oils, oils for wood, etc. All these funds do not form films on the surface of the wood, for this reason the appearance of the wall is practically unchanged. At the same time, the texture of natural wood and the contrast of the fibers are emphasized.
  • Mastics - keep the surface velvety, and also set off the pattern on the saw cut of the bar. Moreover, mastic allows you to mask small chips and cracks.
  • Varnishes (matte and glossy) are the most common formulations used for interior decoration. Usually, a varnish with a tinting component is applied to the base, and then several translucent layers are laid. As a result, the surface gets additional "depth". The varnish is especially useful where the timber wall is most exposed to friction, for example, along the stairs.
  • Interior paints. Painting a tree inside a house can be performed with compositions with different covering rates - depending on what kind of task they face. If you want to preserve the natural pattern of wood, then glaze acrylic compositions are used. If it is necessary to give the wall a new color, then an alkyd or acrylic-based opaque paint is used.

Almost the same paints and varnishes are used to process a wide variety of wooden components inside the house. Thus, painting an imitation of a bar or cladding from a lining inside a room can be done with the same acrylic varnishes or paints as the treatment of a bar.

Painting a house from glued laminated timber outside: varnishes, paints and impregnations

External processing of laminated veneer lumber, first of all, is focused on protecting the house from the effects of negative environmental factors, as well as changing its appearance.

Analysis of the compositions used for processing:

  • Organic or water based impregnations. In fact, they are not paints, since they have almost no effect on the appearance of the house. Their main function is damage by microorganisms, protection from fire, etc.
  • Film-forming compositions (can be both opaque and translucent). They protect the wood from contact with moisture, while not preventing the evaporation of liquid from the thickness of the wood.
  • Coloring antiseptics are compounds that are designed for the external treatment of log houses.
  • Outdoor paints. According to their characteristics, they are close to film-forming compositions, but their main function is to change the color of the surface. Although painting a house from a bar outside with paints from leading manufacturers often replaces protective treatment.

Popular paints for the facade of houses made of laminated veneer lumber

Houses made of laminated veneer lumber look very attractive, but every year their appearance deteriorates. This happens under the negative influence of the environment. Decorative painting solves this problem. Competent wall painting includes a set of actions, which we will discuss below.

The color of the coating is chosen in strict accordance with the design decision of the house. Contrasting toning will set off the natural pattern and accentuate the structure of the wood. Paints will add richness to the walls and cover the wood. But the final choice always depends on the tenants of the house. Whatever color you choose for a house made of laminated veneer lumber, it must meet the main requirements.

  1. German company "Zobel". Paints of this brand are produced on the basis of water, which means they are highly environmentally friendly. They are conveniently applied to a wooden base, this material retains heat for a long time. Paints and varnishes are presented in a rich assortment. The cost is in the middle range. A significant disadvantage is the need for regular coverage renewal (every five years).
  2. German company "Osmo". The material is oil-based, therefore it does not harm human health. Perfectly emphasizes the structure of the wood and is easy to apply. It retains its original shade for a long time, does not require regular updating. It is often used for indoor and outdoor use. Its main drawback is the unreasonably high price.
  3. Finnish company "Tikkurila". It should be said right away that the paints of this company are presented in a rich assortment. Among the advantages, it is worth highlighting the low cost, high color fastness and pleasant color, among the disadvantages - the need for constant updating - about once every 5 years.
  4. Domestic company "Finn Color". Paints are offered in a rich assortment and at an affordable price. For many years they retain their original color, but require regular touch-up (at least 1 time in five years).
  5. Domestic paints "Thermika". The coatings are highly resistant to temperature extremes, ultraviolet rays and moisture, and are perfect for painting glued laminated timber houses from the outside. The prices are quite adequate, but the assortment leaves much to be desired.

Painting the walls of laminated veneer lumber outside

Proper preparation is the key to effective results.

Glued laminated timber is a material with excellent performance characteristics. It almost does not deform during shrinkage, and yet it is necessary to process or paint it in a different way only with strict adherence to certain rules.

Attention! Experts advise starting work no later than 3 months after the construction of buildings. If you allow the house to stand longer, then gradually the timber will begin to collapse under the influence of climatic factors, which will negatively affect the adhesion of the paint to the tree.

For high-quality surface preparation for painting, we give instructions:

  1. Painting is carried out at a temperature of at least +5 degrees. As for interior work, the humidity should be no more than 80%.
  2. To improve the adhesion of the paint to the surface of the timber, all surfaces to be painted must be plastered and sanded.
Attention! After sanding, you need to "walk" along the walls using an industrial vacuum cleaner. The joints of the beams deserve special attention, since it is there that most of the small sawdust, as well as wood dust, accumulate.
  1. We apply a special sealant to the ends of the beams.
  2. Priming the sanded surface. Usually the price of primers is low, but they provide high-quality paint adhesion. Therefore, it is better to spend money on a primer, and save on buying expensive enamel or acrylic compounds.
  3. Paint can only be applied after the primer is completely dry.

As for the technology of external and internal processing of timber walls, it is almost no different. The only difference is the number of layers of material that is applied to the substrate.

If you are planning to do it yourself, follow these tips:

  • The paints must be mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions. The situation is exactly the same with varnishes with tinting components.
  • Prepare a clean, large container for mixing.
  • Before starting work, test the composition by using it in a small area. Thus, you will get an idea of the appearance of the wall.

Attention! It is imperative to do this, since the wood's own color strongly affects the final result. Therefore, the test color allows you to make adjustments and possibly reduce or increase the amount of pigment.

  • To apply paint, we use a roller, brush or spray. It is recommended to apply varnishing with a brush.
  • First, we apply the first layer of material to the wood flooring. The smaller its thickness, the better.
  • After it dries, we continue painting. For processing walls from a bar, you may need from 3 to 5 layers of material. All of them can be applied only upon completion of the drying of the previous one.

At the end of the painting, you need to wait until the walls are dry. After 1-2 months, it is worthwhile to carefully inspect the surfaces, and, if necessary, seal up the cracks and cracks found with a sealant. Apply paint on top of the sealant, following the same technology as for painting at home.

To paint the facade of a wooden house, it is necessary to complete preparatory measures and adhere to some rules. We will provide some tips below.

  1. Before painting, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt with a brush. This work is best done with water. To do this, use a garden sprayer and a medium-hard brush, which is convenient for removing dirt from the surface.
  2. Get rid of mold with special solutions. There are a lot of them on sale. To find mold, simply examine the walls for gray-blue spots.
  3. Use a metal spatula to get rid of the resin. Once you have removed the resin, only a small hole will remain, which can be repaired with varnish.
  4. If nails or other metal elements protrude from the surface, they must be treated with compounds that prevent corrosion.
  5. After completing all the preparatory measures, the tree is allowed to dry. This process can take about 2 weeks. To protect the material, you will need to cover the structure with plastic wrap, in which ventilation holes are provided.

How much does it cost to paint a house made of laminated veneer lumber?
