Installation of snow guards on slate roofs. Snow holders on the roof made of profiled sheet: how to install? Installation of structures on corrugated board

In most of the Russian regions, a significant amount of precipitation falls in the form of snow in winter. Avalanche snow drifts from the roof surface can not only cause material damage - it poses a threat to the health of passers-by. Installing snow guards on the roof will help to avoid such problems.

Types and design features

Snow holders are designed to keep snow in order to prevent it from avalanche and thereby exclude the possibility of an accident with those who live in the house or pass by it.

The design of the snow retainer on the roof allows trapping snow, but at the same time it allows moisture to pass through, which is formed during the melting process, without any problems. These devices are installed on the pitched roofs of buildings in the process of laying the roofing.

Depending on the design of the roof snow holders, they are of several types:

  1. Snow barriers... This name was given to blocking fences. Due to their presence, snow lies on the slopes until the moment of natural melting. These products eliminate the likelihood of a collapse of the snow mass. These include a corner snow guard and a yoke.
  2. Snow cutters... They do not hold snowdrifts on the slope, but divide them into separate parts, in which the falling speed and the degree of mechanical impact are much lower. These devices will not protect a person from the collapse of the snow cap from the roof, but this process will become much safer. Snow cutters include tubular and trellis products.

Before installing snow guards, it is necessary to determine which type of device will be the best solution, which will require the following information:

  • the amount of average annual precipitation in the region;
  • the size of the slopes and their steepness.

The installation of snow retention is carried out along the overhang of the roof slope, but if it is necessary to save money, the devices are mounted in places where the fall of the snow mass is the greatest danger.

What are snow retention measures for?

Building designers generally prefer steep ramps when choosing roof configurations because they handle rainfall more efficiently. But in winter, when the water freezes, the advantage of such roofs turns into a problem.

Snow retention measures are necessary for a number of reasons, as they:

  1. Provide safety... As a result of an uncontrolled fall of a snowdrift at a significant speed, a person can be seriously injured or even lost his life. To prevent this, devices are placed on the slopes that slow down or completely block the fall of the mass of snow, and can also divide it into smaller parts. But at the same time, you need to know how to properly install the snow guards on the roof and then they will function as efficiently as possible.
  2. Protects roofing... Snow under certain conditions turns into an ice crust. Sliding off the roof can scratch the material and remove the protective coating from it. In the place where scratches have appeared, corrosive processes begin, leading to damage to the roof. Often a similar problem is relevant for metal tiles, corrugated board and rebate.

How to install tubular snow guards correctly

This device consists of a system of brackets connected by two rows of tubes with a diameter of 10 to 30 millimeters. The roof mount bracket consists of a metal plate with an attachment shelf and pipe holes. According to the instructions explaining how to install the tubular snow guard, it must be mounted above the load-bearing wall of the building along the slopes.

To give strength, the lower pipe is fixed above the surface of the ramp at a height not exceeding 3 centimeters. There should be a distance of 8 - 10 centimeters between the tubes. If the steepness of the slopes exceeds 60 degrees, the rules for installing snow guards provide for their placement in two rows with an interval of 2 to 3 meters.

Consumers are offered devices made of galvanized steel, on which a coating is applied that is in harmony with the most popular colors of roofing.

Lattice

They look like a lattice. Correct installation of snow guards of this type provides for their attachment to the slope using brackets. Lattice devices are made of the highest quality alloy steel, therefore they are resistant to corrosion processes.

The height of the grate is 10–20 centimeters. The efficiency of the snow retention process depends on the value of this parameter.

The lattice type design has gained popularity due to its several advantages:

  1. Versatility... Brackets provide the ability to mount snow guards on any roofing material.
  2. Reliability. The grates are able to withstand massive snow layers even when the slopes have a significant area and a large slope.
  3. Easy to install... Following the instructions on how to properly install the lattice-type snow guards on the roof, you need to fix the brackets on the surface of the slopes using a screwdriver. In this case, self-tapping screws with hexagonal caps are used, which are equipped with a rubber seal. After that, the grill is inserted into the fasteners.
  4. Variety of colors... You can buy devices in different colors, thanks to the presence of paintwork. If you choose the right shade, the snow holders will not be visible against the background of the roofing.

Roof Mounting Angle Type Snow Guards - How to Mount

If the roof is made with a slight slope and its structural device does not allow the snow mass to slide down, in regions with low precipitation, snow guards of the corner structure are installed. They look like corners with fixing shelves up to 10 centimeters high and 20-30 centimeters long.

In the description of manufacturers, which deals with how to properly attach snow barriers to corrugated boarding, metal tiles, sheet metal, it is said that angular products can be mounted on roofs with a slope of no more than 20 degrees.

The procedure for installing the corners for trapping snow differs from the process for attaching other types of snow guards on the roof. They need to be placed in several rows in a staggered sequence along the roof slopes. A distance of 50-100 centimeters is observed between the rows - this value depends on the width of the slope.

The advantage of this type of snow barriers is that they can be made independently from metal sheets and thus save 50% of the cost of devices manufactured at industrial enterprises. There is nothing difficult in how to correctly install the angled snow guards. They are attached to the roofing material using a screwdriver.

Installation of point snow holders - yokes

These devices - yokes are in the shape of a triangle with a long strip, designed to fix them on the slopes of the roofs. They are in demand for installation on slopes covered with soft materials with a rough surface, which are produced on the basis of bitumen mastic. Hence their ability to hold snow masses is negligible. The tow bars are not intended to prevent snow from melting, their function is to reduce the speed and force of the fall.

There are features in how to properly install this type of snow guards:

  1. Usually, tow bars are mounted complete with snow holders of a different design - lattice and tubular barriers.
  2. The towbars are placed in staggered rows along the eaves of the roofs, observing a gap of 50-60 centimeters between adjacent devices and a distance of 50-100 centimeters between the rows.
  3. Installation is carried out simultaneously with the flooring of the roof covering. Before fixing the snow holders on the roof, mark on the crate how the rows will be located. The fixing stick of the devices is fixed on the boards with self-tapping screws and then covered with sheets of bituminous tiles.

You can buy such tows in building supermarkets or make them yourself from metal sheets. Manufactured products are cleaner and more attractive, but homemade gadgets are just as effective.

The process of how to mount snow guards on the roof is not as complicated as it might seem at first. Even beginners in the construction business can master the technology for performing such work.

Lack of snow protection can lead not only to damage to roofing and drainage systems, but also damage passers-by and parked cars.

To avoid such a nuisance, you can install a special snow guard.

The device and installation of snow guards on the roof is not such a complicated process as it seems at first glance and is available even to a beginner in the construction business.

In this article, you will learn why you need it and how to properly install snow guards on the roof of a private house.

The snow holder is a special design that prevents snow from falling from the roof, that is, the snow does not come off in one layer. Only melt water will flow down. Many people believe that it is not necessary to install such snow retainers, but as practice has shown, this is an important detail that should not be neglected.

Two main functions of such an important roof structure can be distinguished:

  1. prevents abrupt and sudden descent of a mass of snow from the roof itself;
  2. keep the snow on the roof so that it melts there.

There are several types of such a design, and when choosing them, it is necessary to take into account several important factors:

  • direct angle of inclination of the slope;
  • how much precipitation will fall in the area (snow);
  • what material the roof is made of.

There are two main types of this design:

  • a type of snow trap that lets snow through itself;
  • the second type is snow-tight.

The choice of any of the proposed designs depends on personal motives, as well as on the above factors.

Snow retention in action

Interestingly, there are different names in different stores: snow blocking fences, snow pads, and so on. It is likely that the names characterize the functions of such installations.

For example, snow barriers keep all the snow on the roof (of any volume)... And the snow will melt on the house in its natural way. The snow will not melt even in parts. Snow cutters - as the name suggests, this design allows you to divide a whole piece of snow cover into small pieces.

Some parts fall, others melt right on the roof surface. The advantage of the design is that the snow does not fall in a continuous layer, which ensures the safety of people, and also does not spoil the roof covering.

Of course, snow holders are different in shape, size, differ in the material of manufacture... And before choosing, it is worth focusing on how much snow should linger.

Design variations, advantages

The most popular option for such designs is tubular type.

By itself, this unit is a simple structure of brackets into which two tubes of the same diameter, approximately 15-30 mm, are inserted.

In fact, this type can be classified as universal and can be applied to any material (wood, etc.).

And according to professionals, this type of construction is considered the most effective.... In addition, it can be installed on a roof that has been in use for a long time.

The bracket itself looks like a simple plate with "outlets" for pipes. Often its height is no more than 15 cm.... It is attached to the pitched part using a special horizontal stick.

To do this, take special screws that can be attached to metal.

NOTE!

When installing this type of structure, it is necessary to install it along the line of the load-bearing wall... This is necessary so that the load is evenly divided. The essence of the operation of such a device is the gradual transmission of snow (the snow will pass between the pipes).

This version of the snow holder is popular and has received the status of the most hope of the installation. Also, the tubular structure must be installed exclusively in one line, the run-away option is excluded. If the structure is in the color of the roof, then it is almost invisible on the roof.

The process of mounting such a system is quite simple:

  • mark the holes and drill them with a drill;
  • assemble the kit itself, but do not tighten the bolts;
  • the existing assembled bracket must be fixed through the roof to the crate;
  • attach the lower part of the structure to the cornice ( at the level of the load-bearing wall);
  • now just connect the components by tightening the bolts.

Tubular type

Another good option for saving from improper snow melting is snow stops (hooks)... From the name it is clear that outwardly such structures resemble hooks.

But they can't hold off a lot of snow, therefore, it is best to use them in cases where roof cleaning will be carried out on a continuous basis. Often these hooks are mounted on.

Experts advise using this option as an auxiliary to other, more reliable systems, in places where a lot of snow falls.

Snow holder - hook

Lattice type snow guard... This type of construction is suitable in places where there is a large amount of snow, since special grill is able to withstand strong pressure... Snow is kept on the roof, and only melt water flows down.

Install them at a large angle. The efficiency of such an installation is influenced by its height (the height of the grate)... The color of the lattice can be matched to the color of the roof.

The maximum height reaches 20 cm.

Lattice type

The corner version of the snow holder is relevant where there is not so much snow... Most often they are attached to or, because the structure itself is made from these materials.

From the name it is obvious that outwardly, this type of installation resembles a corner on which there are special fasteners for installation... It is not recommended to install on slopes over 30 degrees.

Attach them directly to the roof itself, you can arrange them randomly, or in one line.

Corner view

Some people prefer to use a wooden log as a way to keep snow.... The option is not very common. You can meet it on different types of roofs, for example, on a shingle roof. It is attached to the roof with large hooks.

L It is natural that the size of the log affects its capabilities, that is, the larger it is, the more snow can trap... To have the effect of such a structure, it is worth attaching it at a distance of 2-3 cm from the roof.

This leads to the fact that a small amount of snow melts and flows down the drain, and most of the sediment remains on the roof, and melts in its own way.

Installing snow guards on the roof with your own hands

How to install snow guards on the roof? If you decide to install snow guards yourself, then you need to consider the type of roof and the amount of rainfall.

After that, already buy what you need and start the mounting process itself.

In fact, there is nothing complicated here, you just need to know some rules for installing such a design.

If you are building a house from scratch, or changing the roof, immediately think about installing such structures. This will save you time, effort and nerves.

The installation process itself does not take much time and does not require serious preparations.... It is enough to know a couple of rules and step by step execute the existing algorithm of actions.

Since metal is the most common type of roofing, it is worth considering the option of installing it on such a surface. More details about the installation of snow protection on metal tiles.

CAREFULLY!

Its very design assumes that snow will descend on it very often, and its smooth surface cannot retain snow on its own. During the day, it begins to melt and go down in a layer, and this can lead to scratches on the surface of the metal tile, which in turn will lead to corrosion and deterioration of the coating.

On the roof of such a plan, you can take different types of structures:

  • tubular;
  • lattice;
  • corner.

Installation of tubular snow guards:

  • first step - outline where exactly the snow guard system will be located;
  • costs enhance special additional bar;
  • an important stage of installation, assembly of the structure, but do not tighten the bolts;
  • we begin to fasten the roofing material, where from above it is necessary to make holes for the fastening itself. Such holes should be located only on the lower wave, to the one that is adjacent to the crate itself;
  • next is the attachment of the structure to the ramp, using bolts 8 * 60 mm... Be sure to waterproof the holes with rubber pads. The very same step between the bracket depends on two factors, on the slope and length. For example, a step of 50 cm is quite enough, even for the most powerful structure;
  • the last step of the installation of the system - pipe insertion... Still have questions? Watch the video below.

Installation of a tubular snow guard

Fixing step

It is important to remember that it is necessary to fix the system only over a load-bearing type wall.

Installing a snow guard on other materials

Decking is another popular type of roof... Like metal tiles, it has sensitivity to temperature changes.

It is critically necessary to install a snow guard on such a roof. More details about the installation of snow protection under the corrugated board.

When the snow melts in the afternoon and freezes in the evening, ice forms that can scratch the material, and this over time will lead to the fact that the galvanized coating deteriorates and scratches form in those places, as a result of which the material starts to rust.

If you choose such a roofing material, you can also use tubular or lattice snow guards.

In fact, the installation of a structure on a corrugated board is not a very complicated procedure, and almost no different from installation on metal tiles.

Installation of the structure on the corrugated board:

  1. the fastening itself is carried out through the material;
  2. be sure to strengthen the crate;
  3. small holes for fasteners should be reinforced with rubber gaskets;
  4. installation of the structure should be carried out only on the lower part of the wave of the material.

Mounting hooks

In cases where the structure is attached to a ready-made roof covering, it is worthwhile to understand that you will have to disassemble it in order to strengthen the crate and it is logical to think about this in advance - during construction.

Conclusion

An element such as a snow guard is necessary on the roof of any building, regardless of the style and location. Installing an additional element will allow your roof to maintain its strength and reliability, and also help to ensure the safety of others.

When choosing the correct and high-quality design, carefully study what it is made of. Whichever type of snow holder you choose, it is not necessary to install it around the entire perimeter, since they can be correctly positioned only in the right places on the roof.

It is enough just to install them in the most dangerous places and this will ensure the effective functioning of the additional elements and at the same time save money spent on roofing equipment. Be careful when making a decision, consult with experts and your choice will be fully justified.

The need for a snow retention system

There are many requirements for the roof of a country house; it must be reliable, practical and beautiful; another mandatory characteristic of the roof is its safety. It is this quality of the roofing structure that sharply deteriorates in the cold season in places characterized by long and snowy winters.

Weightless, fluffy snow flakes, falling on the roof, have the unpleasant property of lingering on it, and over time and thickening. In a short time, the snow layer grows to a considerable thickness, having time to thaw several times and then freeze again. As a result, a dense and heavy layer of snow with ice layers is formed, ready to slide (and sliding!) From the roof surface at the most inopportune moment. If at this time a person, an animal or, for example, a parked car, is under the roof, the falling snow can cause (and, unfortunately, often does) considerable damage. Plants planted near the dwelling may also be affected.

The problem of sudden melting of a mass of snow is familiar to residents of northern countries, and snow retention on the roof of a house is a standard solution to the problem. For this, snow holders are used, special devices that do not allow the snow to come off completely at one time. In addition to preventing the sudden disappearance of the snow cover, the device also performs some additional functions:

    Facilitates roof cleaning from the snow.

    Protects the gutter system from violation of the integrity of the connections and breakage from the fasteners.

    During the thaw keep snow on the roof allowing it to melt and drain safely.

    Protects canopies and awnings buildings (falling pieces of ice, compressed snow and icicles can seriously damage them).

The principle of operation of roofing systems for snow blocking

The installation of snow guards on a roof made of metal tiles is especially relevant - a smooth polymer surface cannot seriously prevent the snow mass from slipping. If the bottom layer of snow has turned into an ice crust (which happens in 70-80% of cases), it will inevitably damage the surface of the sheet when it melts. Scratches will become sources of corrosion, and the roof will not last as long as it should.

Three factors influence the choice of a snow retention system:

    Slope angle.

    Snow cover size characteristic of the region.

    Roofing type.

The snow guards presented for sale can be divided according to the principle of operation into two groups:

    Snow cutters... This design is designed to let snow through in small portions, in parts. Its principle of operation is not to stop (and accumulate) a layer of snow, but to divide it into fragments. The advantage of the design: a large mass of snow does not collect on the slopes, which loads the rafter frame. It comes off gradually and is incapable of causing damage. Another plus - snow cutters are allowed to be mounted on the roof of any steepness.

One of the options for the placement of snow holders Source remoo.ru

    Snow barriers... They completely block snow from falling; so that the accumulated snow cushion does not deform the roof and rafter system, the snowdrifts will have to be removed by hand on a regular basis. Installation of snow barriers is justified only for a solid structure with a solid bearing capacity.

Roofing systems for snow retention: popular design solutions

As a rule, snow blocking systems are purchased at the stage of housing construction, simultaneously with the roofing material (but nothing prevents you from purchasing them later). You can choose products of one of the following types:

    Lattice... Such structures are widespread and are successfully used for different types of roofing, including metal tiles. There are several types of products on the market, differing in the complexity of execution and the characteristics of the supporting parts. Comparatively high grilles can perform an additional function: serve as a safety barrier in the summer, during repairs.

On our website you can find contacts of construction companies that offer a roof repair service. You can communicate directly with representatives by visiting the Low-Rise Country exhibition of houses.

    Corner(lamellar). A budget option that you can choose if the snow accumulation is insignificant. Angle-type snow protectors are easy to design and install, which ensures their popularity, including for metal tiles. Looks like a galvanized steel angle; a wide range of shades of protective polymer coating allows you to choose products that are most suitable for the color of the roof. They are allowed to be used on roofs whose slope angle does not reach 30 °.

    Tubular... If snowy winters are common, a tubular structure is the ideal choice, especially for standing seam or metal roofing. In case of frequent and prolonged snowfalls, it is recommended to install tubular structures in several rows.

Tubular construction Source zemeljka.ru

    Point(drag lifts). A relatively new type of device for regions with light and medium snowfall. They evenly distribute the snow pressure over the roof and additionally serve as foot support. Various roofing materials require the use of products of a certain shape; snow guards suitable for soft roofs must not be installed on metal tiles.

    Polycarbonate ( toothed). They are a kind of point snow holders; the products are transparent, non-corrosive and easy to install.

Budget option Source stroypay.ru

    Horseshoe snow holders... A kind of point system; has a characteristic curved shape and is made for certain profiles of metal tiles, which facilitates installation.

    Snow holders-logs... The original systems that protected Alpine dwellings from snow and in some places have survived to this day; in modern design, the role of logs is played by metal pipes with a diameter of 130-150 mm. The tubular structure effectively traps the snow layer while handling high pressure with confidence.

System selection and design criteria

In order for the snow blocking system to adequately perform its functions, the type, number and location of snow holders is calculated on the basis of the rules of SNiP 2.0.10.07.85. Competent installation involves drawing up a project for the arrangement of blocking elements on the slopes. This approach helps to avoid the unpleasant situation when it turns out that there is no crate under the drilled hole.

About Finnish polycarbonate snow guards in the following video:

System parameters are calculated based on the following conditions:

    Roof type and angle of inclination... The larger the angle, the more pressure the snow will exert on the system. If the angle exceeds 15 °, experts advise the installation of tubular-type snow guards, as the most reliable.

    Surface area of slopes and type of roofing material.

    Precipitation in the winter in the area. Maps and tables have been developed showing the average values of snow load by region.

The result of the work is the layout of the elements of snow retention on this type of roof. It defines the following parameters:

    Type of snow retention elements.

    Mounting location... The system is installed parallel to the eaves, the first row being placed above the load-bearing wall; this helps to keep the load on the overhangs to a minimum. The rest of the tiers are mounted one and a half to two meters from the first.

Mandatory attachment points for snow holders Source stroimmaster.ru

    Number of rows and pitch between fastening elements... The distance between the brackets is determined by the length of the slope and the amount of the slope (the stronger the slope, the closer the parts are to each other).

    Fastening order... Systems of tubular, lattice and plate type are mounted in rows; drag and corner - staggered.

    Colour... If an emphasis on the snow retention system is not part of your plans, the snow retentions are matched to the color of the roof or one or two shades darker than it.

    Equipment... The kit must include roofing screws and gaskets made of special rubber. They seal the attachment points.

Tubular snow holders for metal tiles

Metal tiles, due to their properties, are affordable, popular and therefore wider than other roofing materials. But its surface is smooth, sensitive to temperature changes, and is not able to hold the melted snow for any long time. This property makes the installation of snow guards on metal roofs an absolute must. The following types of snow holders are suitable for metal roofing (as well as corrugated board):

    Lattice... Reliable, easy to install, versatile in execution.

    Lamellar... Suitable for stingrays with a small angle of inclination, they are more often used where winters are short and with little snow.

    Tubular... Leading in frequency of use.

Universal tubular snow guard Source celinrmo.ru

Tubular structures are considered to be the most versatile category. They are designed for high pressure, reliable in operation, and safely divide the layer of snow into small fragments. They are also widely used in the protection of tiled and soft roofs. Tubular snow holders on metal tiles are mounted following several rules:

    Fastening of parts is carried out through the roof.

    Installation is carried out after the reinforcement of the lathing, the basis for securing the parts of the system.

    So that the sheet of metal tile does not deform, a hole is drilled in the concave (bottom) part of the wave, at the point of contact with the crate.

    Fasteners sealed with rubber gaskets.

If you have chosen plate or corner snow holders, you do not need to reinforce the crate, since they are mounted directly into the sheet. The choice of models of snow holders, working on the principle of snow cutters, allows you not to worry about timely cleaning the roof - even in a strong blizzard, the snow will go down in safe portions.

Additional types of snow holders for metal tiles

In addition to the ubiquitous tubular snow bollards on the roof made of metal tiles, it is allowed to install other types of snow holders, including:

    Lattice... By design, they resemble tubular systems, only a lattice plays the role of retaining pipes, the size of which (height) can vary. Such barriers hold back snow well, but sometimes they are able to sag under its weight. The grille does its job especially well on steep roofs (when the slope exceeds 35-40 °).

    Corner(lamellar). If the slope of the roof is small (up to 30º), and there is little snow in winter, you can limit yourself to installing a corner system. Corner snow holders are up to 6 cm high; on the roof they are staggered in several rows. The system is not designed for high pressure and the roof will need periodic manual cleaning.

    Point(hooks, hooks). They are used mainly on flat, rough (soft) roofs. On metal roofs, point systems are used to complement gratings and pipes.

The lamellar system is ideal for flat roofs Source roofos.com.ua

Turnkey installation of snow guards

The price of snow holders is comparable to the costs of periodical roof cleaning and repairs, which are inevitable in the event of uncontrolled melting of snow layers. The installation of snow guards on the roof is a demanded service provided by many construction organizations, often in parallel with the arrangement of the roof. Turning to specialists allows you to get full protection of the roofing structure and the surrounding space. The cost of installing snow guards is calculated per running meter; it depends on several parameters:

    Roof type and roofing material.

    House heights, the complexity of access to the roof.

    Species selected system snow retention.

    Scope of work(depends on the size of the roof and, therefore, the number of snow retaining elements)

    Necessities preparatory work.

Contacting the company allows you to get additional benefits:

    The quality of the system is affected by installation time, the option optimal in terms of price / quality ratio can be obtained simultaneously with the arrangement of the roof.

Mounting brackets for tubular system Source sense-life.com

    The installation of the system is carried out according to the manufacturer's recommendations, which increases the service life of the structure.

    Equipping the roof with snow guards involves obtaining a guarantee for work(and sometimes on the material). If during this time a defect is revealed, it is eliminated free of charge. If problems do not arise during the warranty service, they, with a high degree of probability, will not continue.

Conclusion

Snow falling from the roof is an urgent problem for a significant part of the Russian territory. Modern technological solutions in the form of installation of snow retention systems are able to reduce the terrible consequences to a minimum. For a roof made of metal tiles, the best solution would be the installation of reliable tubular snow holders by professional builders.

Many regions where the winter is snowy enough are faced with the problem of snow melting from the roofs of houses. Sliding snow from a great height is a great danger and can not only damage property, but also take several lives.

To avoid such a problem, it is enough to put a snow holder on the roof of the house. This design will keep snow on the roof until the moment it turns into water.
To install a snow guard on the roof, several factors should be taken into account: the angle of inclination of the roof, the cover material and the snowiness of the region.

Types of snow holders

There are two categories of snow guards - snow cutters and snow barriers. The former are a barrier to snow and completely hold it until spring, while the latter, as it were, cut the snow layer into small pieces so that the snow can safely slide off in small pieces.

Also, snow retainers differ in the material from which they are made.

Tubular

This snow guard is a structure made of vertical plates and pipes inserted between them. The plates are screwed to the roof with screws.

Such a snow guard can be easily installed on a roof with a steep slope (up to 60◦).

Lattice

It has a fairly simple design - these are brackets between which the grille is fixed. The entire snow holder is almost always made of galvanized steel and can be painted, which will allow you to choose a snow holder of the same color as the roof cover (when it comes to metal tiles or corrugated board).

Such a snow holder belongs to the category of a snow barrier, because it completely holds the snow until it melts.

But there is one drawback - if there is too much snow, then the lattice can bend and deform under the pressure of the formation.

Lamellar

This type of snow holders is installed on the roofing tiles in case of a little snow cover in the area.

The lamellar snow holders are made of the same color and material as the roof cover, which is very convenient and does not spoil the overall appearance of the building.

On numerous photos of roof snow guards, you can see that the structure is made of simple metal triangles. This type of snow guard is usually used for roofs with a slight angle of inclination (up to 30 °).

Point

Such snow guards are usually used as an addition to tubular or lattice snow guards, as they trap a minimum amount of snow.

This type can be installed only when installing the roof, because it is attached under the roofing material.

Wood log

The simplest and most budgetary type of snow holders. Such a log is installed more often on a wooden cover and it is fixed on special fasteners.

Installing a snow guard

When the owner of the house decides to buy a snow holder, he immediately thinks about the question of how to install the snow holder? There are several answers. It all depends on the material of the cover, the degree of slope of the roof, etc.

It is worth remembering that you cannot install snow guards near the eaves overhangs by less than 40 cm, because this will entail the descent of the eaves together with the snow.

Installing on a roof made of metal

  • Outline the place where the snow guard will be mounted
  • Strengthen the crate
  • Assemble the construction kit, but do not secure
  • Fasten roofing material and drill holes
  • Screw on the brackets
  • Insert tubes into brackets

In addition to the tubular snow holder, a lattice or plate can also be installed on the metal tile.

Installation on a roof made of corrugated board

As well as for metal tiles, tubular, lattice and lamellar snow holders can be used for corrugated roofs.

The installation of the structure is also practically the same, only the installation does not require a crate.

Installation on a seam roof

Installation differs in that the brackets are attached to the rebate.

Installation on a soft roof

On this type of roof, the snow guard can be installed only during the installation of the roof. Either a point or tubular snow holder is installed on such a roof.

The installation of a tubular snow holder is the same as for corrugated board or metal roofing.

Installation sequence of the point snow guard:

  • Outline staggered arrangement
  • Place the mount under the cover
  • Secure with self-tapping screws

In any case, no matter what roof the snow holders are mounted on, it is worth remembering that the roof, in any case, must be cleaned once a week, regardless of the amount of snow, or a heating cable must be installed so that the snow melts immediately.

Photo of snow holders on the roof

Regular snow melting from sloped roofs is a real problem in the central and northern regions. CIS... At the slightest thaw, massive layers break down, risking causing damage to property and health bystanders.

This unpleasant phenomenon can be prevented by snow holders - enclosing structural elements that are installed on the roof. We will talk about them in our article.

Colloquially devices are called differently: snow feet, snow plows, snow barriers, snow-blocking fences, snow cutters and even snow stops.

So what are snow holders for? It's simple: they prevent the ice from sliding off the roof. There is 2 main classes according to the principle of protection:

    Snow cutters... Divide a large layer into smaller "portions". This helps to keep the cover on the roof. But even if a small part falls, there will be no serious damage.

    Snow barriers... Fixes all the snow on the roof, allowing it to melt slowly under the sun's rays. The resulting water flows freely into the drain.

The choice of the design of snow stops depends on the following factors:

    The value of the angle of inclination of the roof.

    Roof material.

    The height of the snow cover in the region.

Installation of snow guards relevant only then, when the angle of inclination of the roof does not exceed 60°. Otherwise, nothing can stop the snow from collapsing.

Typical tubular snow holders are metal prefabricated structures consisting of 3 brackets with fixings for roof mounting. Fasteners - self-tapping screws 8 × 60 mm. In the holes on the supports pipes are inserted... Their diameter ranges from 15 before 30 mm. The height of the devices reaches 150 mm.

Minimum distance from the roofing material to the first pipe should be 20 -30 mm, and the run-up between two pipes is 80 -100 mm. The high strength of the barrier allows it to be installed on roofs with a slope up to 60 °. Refers to class of snow cutters... Suitable for any roof.

The video shows the installation of the brand products " Grand Line»:

Mount tubular devices solid line along the perimeter of the roof at a distance 400 -500 mm from the eaves. In regions with a high level of snow cover, a second row with a run-up from 2 before 3 meters.

Standard lattice snow guards consist of steel brackets and a metal mesh vertically mounted on them. Height indicators range from small - 50-70 mm to large - 150-200 mm.

Refer to class of snow barriers... In terms of reliability, they are inferior to tubular products. "Lattices" are mounted in a row, placing them at a short distance from the eaves.

Information about snow feet is available on the video:

With the length of the roof slope more than 5.5 meters in tandem with lattice devices use additional- corner.

If the roof brought in by precipitation insignificantly, it is advisable to use lamellar snow holders, which are also called corner ones. These are triangles with mounting brackets, made of thin metal, reminiscent of corrugated board.

The height of the products does not exceed 40-60 mm. Due to their low rigidity, they are installed only on roofs with a slope angle of up to 30 °. Corner barriers are staggered. Minimum required 2 running row from 0,5 before 1 meters between them.

The general impression of the structures can be made after watching the video:

Point snow holders are narrow metal hooks. By virtue of low barrier function, devices apply only in pair with tubular and lattice structures, or in regions with low snow cover.

Snow feet are good for soft roofing materials. The yokes are mounted in checkerboard, observing the minimum indentation between them - 500 -700 mm.

Dot products are attached to the roof lathing still before installing roofing materials.

The ideal solution would be to install snow guards around the perimeter roofs. But if finances and time are not enough, you can limit yourself to protection the main plots: pedestrian zones, parking spaces, balconies and roof windows.

From the roof with a slope 35 ° snow can fall a distance 0,4-1,5 meters from the gutter.

Snow barriers should be installed with indented from the eaves if it is not adjacent to the rafters. The minimum distance from the edge of the roof is 500-800 mm.

The smooth surface of the metal tile is an ideal factor for regular avalanches. To protect property and households, use tubular, trellised, or plate snow guards. The latter are found only in regions with a low level of snow cover.

The installation process consists of the following steps:

    Markup... We mark the place where the snow foot will be.

    Gain... Add a reinforcing bar to the lathing.

    Assembly... We connect all the elements together.

    Drilling... We make holes in the lower wave of the metal tile.

    Anchoring... We fix the snow barrier with self-tapping screws 8 × 60 with rubber gaskets.

    Completion... We insert pipes into the brackets or connect the lattice structures into the block.

How the more pronounced the slope angle, the more often the brackets should be installed... Minimum run - 500 mm. On long slopes, larger 5,5 meter required second row snow holders.

As you can see in the photo, the profiled sheet is a smooth material. Sliding, the snow not only falls down, but also scratches the protective coating of the metal. Tubular, lattice and corner snow holders are suitable for this type of roof.

Installation process is no different from what is typical for metal tiles... Necessary strengthen the crate, drill holes in the bottom wave, screw on snow stops with bolts with sealed gaskets.

Corner structures do not need strengthening of the base, since they are lightweight and are held in the upper wave of the corrugated board on self-tapping screws screwed through the metal into the wood of the sheathing.

To protect seam roofs from excessive accumulation of precipitation, use only tubular and lattice snow holders. In this case, the brackets are mounted directly on the rebate in the following sequence:

    Clamp installation... We hang the bracket on the rebate.

    Drilling... We make holes in the clamp.

    Fixation... Insert the bolts into the holes and tighten the nuts.

The good thing about the solution is that for its implementation no need to reinforce the roof sheathing additional bar. The distance between the brackets depends on the angle of inclination, but it is safer to install the clamp on each fold.

Although slate is a rough material, snow can still slide down during a thaw. Therefore, on the roofs we need lightweight corner snow holders. Their rigidity is quite enough to cope with medium pressure. The structure should be mounted only on the upper wave.

Slate - very fragile... It must be drilled with special care. As fasteners, you can use self-tapping screws screwed through a sheet into a wooden crate. The main thing is not to overtighten, otherwise the snow holder will make holes in the roof. It is imperative to use rubber pads.

On soft roofs made of ondulin, bituminous shingles and other materials, there is a dressing that protects from the descent of snow masses. The slope angle on such roofs does not exceed 15 °, and the crate is made of solid plywood. Therefore, it is advisable to use yokes.

Point fences are placed in checkerboard... The optimal number of rows is from 2 before 3 ... And the distance between the two hooks should not be less 500-700 mm.

In exceptional cases, installation can be performed on a soft roof tubular stoppers. It is advisable to use galvanized products, for example, the trade mark " Grand Line».

Sometimes it is difficult to make a choice and understand exactly how many rows snow guards must be installed on the roof. There is a calculation method based on 3 parameters:

Slope length... The mass and density of the snow cover depends on this distance. It can be viewed in the project documentation for the house. The unit of measurement is meters.

Tilt angle... The angle at which the roof is tilted relative to the horizon. The meaning can be found in the construction drawings for housing.

We find in the table the figure of the snow region. Let it be St. Petersburg - 3 . We define tilt angle. We have - 20 °. We look on intersection point indicators. It turns out that's enough one row stoppers, if the length of the ramp is not more 10,3 m and the distance between the brackets is 80 cm.

If the length of your slope less than table value- one row is enough. When the parameter in the table less than yours- a second row is required. If he less than 2 times- a third row of snow holders is needed.
