Diagram of a lifting garage door with your own hands. Do-it-yourself installation of lifting gates. Dimensions of garage swing gates

To date, a wide variety of garage doors have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. Among all the existing options, traditional lifting gates, which effectively slide under the ceiling of the garage during opening, are especially convenient and ergonomic. At the same time, you can assemble and install the lifting garage door yourself.

There are 2 main types of overhead garage doors.

Overhead sectional doors

The curtain of such a gate consists of a number of individual panels, each of which is about 50 cm high. Steel, wood and plastic can be used for the manufacture of panels.

Hinge hinges are used to connect the panels. Rollers, couplings and other moving elements are made of steel or plastic; stainless materials are used for the manufacture of guides.

The inner part of the canvas must be insulated (mainly with polyurethane foam), which allows you to retain additional heat inside the garage.

Among the main advantages of overhead sectional doors, the following points should be noted:

  • safety of use;
  • simplicity and maximum ease of use;
  • good strength characteristics.

The main disadvantage of this type of gate is the almost complete absence of the possibility of breaking and illegal entry. In addition, you cannot make such a gate yourself - it is extremely difficult.

The only available option is to buy a factory kit and assemble the gate yourself according to the instructions.

Lift-and-turn gates

A similar structure can be assembled and installed on your own. When these gates are opened, the whole leaf rises at once. A hinge-lever system is responsible for the movement of the movable part. The gates are characterized by excellent strength characteristics (the final indicator depends on the properties of the material of manufacture) and provide reliable protection of the garage from intruders.

The structure can be assembled without using guides and rollers. Thanks to this, the canvas will move silently.

The assembly of such a structure does not require narrow technical knowledge. This event does not require large financial investments either.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like all existing mechanisms, overhead garage doors have a number of strengths and some disadvantages.

Dignity

The main advantage of the systems under consideration is increased burglary resistance. The only way to get inside the garage is to cut through the canvas. It is almost impossible to cut the frame and get inside without attracting attention.

The second important design advantage is its long service life. However, in order for the gate to serve for a really long time, high quality galvanized metal should be used for the manufacture of the door leaf.

The gate does not take up space in front of the garage, which makes entry and exit as convenient as possible.

disadvantages

Among the main disadvantages of overhead gates, the following provisions should be noted:

  • heavy construction weight. The disadvantage is relative - other existing designs weigh no less. But in order for the operation of the overhead door to be safe, you need to pay special attention to the quality and reliability of the frame;
  • slightly increased consumption of raw materials;
  • some inconvenience when entering the garage. For example, you will need to constantly get out of the car before reaching the garage about 1.5-2 m - without such a margin, the gate simply will not open.
  • in the open position, the gate takes away about 20-30 cm of the opening height;
  • in case of significant damage to the canvas, it will have to be completely dismantled.

However, despite all its small drawbacks, such gates are an incredibly convenient and ergonomic solution.

Features of the design

Traditional overhead gates are composed of many elements. Check out the features of each.

The frame serves as the basis for the entire structure. The frame should be as rigid as possible and securely fixed in the garage wall.

The side profile is the guiding element along which the main part of the structure moves.

Guides - as already noted, you can do without them. But if possible, it is better not to exclude them from the structure.

Canvas. Manufactured as a one-piece device. Usually it is made of corrugated board. Sometimes wood is also used for the manufacture of canvases, but it is better to refuse such a decision - the material is heavy and relatively short-lived.

Insulation. Stowed between sheets of canvas. It is most convenient to use polyurethane foam.

Rollers, springs and levers. These elements are responsible for the movement of the gate leaf. The sash rises along the guiding element, takes a horizontal position closer to the ceiling and is finally fixed parallel to the ceiling surface.

Provides easier blade lifting.

Electrical or mechanical drive. Electronics is more convenient - to control the gate, just press a button on a portable remote control. Mechanics are more reliable in most cases. If you decide to use an electric drive, remember an important rule - the gate shield should have a slightly lightweight design.

If desired, the finished canvas can be decorated with a variety of decorative elements. They are all available for sale in specialized stores.

It is important to remember: any decorative element, especially if it is forging, contributes to an increase in the weight of the structure. Know when to stop.

What to buy?

Most of the gate elements can be made with your own hands. However, there are such things that it is better to buy ready-made and not waste time. Look for fixtures made from good quality metals. In general, you will need the following:

DIY gate

Hand-made production and installation of gates will allow you to save a significant amount of money on the purchase of a ready-made system and the services of third-party installers.

Video - Installation of sectional doors

First step. Select the appropriate type of gate opener.

The most popular are hinge-lever mechanisms. This design is durable and extremely simple. However, its installation requires the installer to be more precise when placing the rails and setting the tension level of the springs. The guides must be installed exclusively vertically and parallel.

The second option is a mechanism made with the use of counterweights. The cable is attached to the corners of the support frame in its lower part, passes through the block in the direction of the pulley, and already at its (cable) end there is some counterweight. The heavier and larger the blade, the heavier the counterweight must be used. It is recommended to give preference to this mechanism only in the case of installing massive and very heavy lifting gates.

Second step. Draw up a gate project. Pre-measure the existing opening and prepare a sketch (or choose a ready-made version from open sources).

Third step. Prepare accessories for gate assembly. You will need the following:

  • high strength wooden blocks;
  • good quality metal pins;
  • corners;
  • brackets;
  • stiff springs;
  • metal rods;
  • decorative elements.

Fourth step. Assemble the box of the future gate from a cross and a pair of vertical bars. Use squares to connect the bars, plates are also suitable.

Fifth step. Embed the bottom of the box into the concrete screed of the garage floor about 20 mm and fix the product in the opening with metal pins.

Sixth step. Assemble the frame and sheathe it with the material of your choice.

Seventh step. Make a support. Use a corner as a starting material. Use a drill to drill a hole in the shelf to fix it to the uprights. In the second shelf, prepare already 3 holes for installing the bracket. Use a channel bracket to make the spring support.

Eighth step. Prepare a plate from a strip of steel. Connect the bracket and a suitable spring with a steel plate. Bend the extreme coils of the fixed spring like hooks. Connect a metal bar tension controller from below.

Ninth step. Make the bottom hinge corner. You need to drill a hole about 8.5 mm in diameter in the corner and weld the product to the support frame of the structure, stepping back from the bottom edge to the center of the prepared hole. The gap will allow you to place the lift arm in the desired location on the pivot.

Tenth step. Attach the plate to the end of the lift arm. Use welding to securely fix the elements.

Eleventh step. Make rails for the movement of the door leaf. Use a couple of corners as starting material. Arrange them and weld along one edge. The distance between the inner vertices of the steel corners should be 50 mm.

Twelfth step. Attach the finished rail to the previously prepared plate. Use welding for fastening. In doing so, leave an 8 cm gap between the axis of the guide piece and the edge of the cross piece at the bottom. Attach a piece of channel to the second end of the rail by welding, while retreating about 15 cm.Then screw the channel to the ceiling beam with a bolt.

Thirteenth step. Mount several translucent inserts into the canvas. This is an optional item. Use translucent inserts when you need to improve natural light inside the garage.

Video - Rolling gate frame, part 3

Video - Rolling gate wheels, part 4

Fourteenth step. Stick on the rubber sealing bead. It also does not hurt to stick on compensating pads. Together, these elements will increase the stability of the self-made lifting gate.

Fifteenth step. Fix the canvas in the box.

Thus, in self-assembly of overhead garage doors there are no super-difficult tasks, but this work must be approached with maximum responsibility and knowledge of the matter. Follow the instructions, do everything as accurately as possible, and the doors of your garage will become its reliable and durable protection.

Happy work!

Gates that do not open with sashes, but slowly disappear from our eyes, "leaving" along the walls of the garage - are convenient, because they do not interfere and are not bulky, do not take up space. The owner of such a device does not need to think about where it will be placed when opening, when a garage is being built, there is no option for "difficulties in winter due to snow." When such an entrance is opened, only the lower part of the doorway at the garage ceiling is visible. Overhead gates are very safe, as they are, in fact, a solid piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to break. If galvanized, they will also be very resistant to corrosion. The door will reliably protect from thieves, keep warm inside the building and will become very convenient and easy to use, but it is very expensive to buy it. Much cheaper and more interesting to do do-it-yourself lifting gates to the garage.

Important! Before making such gates, you need to understand that they also have disadvantages:
You only need a rectangular opening for the entrance to the garage, an arch will not work, except perhaps a decorative one.
You must first open the gate, and then drive up to the garage close (you need a space of about one and a half meters) .When the gate is open, the height of the garage is reduced by 15-20 cm.

Overhead gates are very safe, as they are, in fact, a solid piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to break.

A model with sections is a canvas, which is made up of blocks of wood, plastic, or steel, somewhere around 1.5 m in size. When this door is lifted, the blocks are "pulled" upward and then return back in the same way. Inside, the wooden panel will be filled with polyurethane foam, which will not let the cold into the garage in winter. The panels are connected with hinge-type hinges, the moving parts are made of steel or plastic (steel is better, they will last longer), and the guide runners are resistant to destruction and rusting due to their composition.
Unfortunately, such a door is almost impossible to make on your own, and it is quite easy to break it open. You can buy a ready-made assembly kit and put the door in order to get its main advantage - simplicity and ease for the owner.

Lift-and-turn doors - the sash in the process of movement "drives in" under the roof using the action of the hinges and levers. Such a door is very reliable and it is very difficult for an intruder to break it in order to rob a garage. They are also quiet during the ascent, because they do not use "driving" elements: guides and rollers, even, using them, it is rather difficult to pinch your finger. This is an expensive choice, about 60 thousand rubles. for the object and 15 thousand - for the installation.

Important! The gates can also be without automatic, with manual control or automatic with an electric drive. Naturally, the former are cheaper. The cost will be from 14 to 75 thousand rubles. From 7 to 15 thousand pay exactly for the installation. You can buy parts separately, but is it worth the trouble? It is easier to purchase an installation kit in order to assemble and mount afterwards. A detailed description of the step-by-step assembly is attached to each type of door.

Lift-and-turn doors - the sash in the process of movement "drives in" under the roof using the action of hinges and levers

This type of door consists of a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door. A steel or wooden frame is mounted in the opening; profiles are necessarily placed in the box directly for the canvas. It is made of wooden boards, sandwich panels, it should be covered with metal. A door made of a single piece of wood is a very expensive pleasure, the choice is simpler - boards impregnated with a chemical composition that will shelter from the weather and covered with metal painted in any color. You can glue the wood over with pieces of extruded foam or other insulation material.

Before you start making the gate directly, you need to study the available lifting methods.

  • Method using hinges and levers. A simple design promises reliability, but you need to very successfully mount the guide profiles and harmoniously adjust the spring tension. The profiles should be placed parallel and level.
  • Counterweight method. The cable is fastened down at the corners of the frame, passed through the block, leads to the winch pulley, and at its end there is a counterweight. Its mass will be commensurate with the weight of the gate. The option means that the frame and frame will be subject to considerable stress, it is advised to choose such a mechanism exclusively for huge gates. Next step: designing the gate. We measure the opening and draw a sketch (we look for drawings on the Internet).

Important You will need the following parts: a metal rod for a voltage regulator, diameter 8 mm; corner for the rail section - 40 x 40 x 4 mm, on the frame - 3.5x3.5x0.4 cm; wooden bars with a cross section of 12 by 8 and ceiling 10 by 10; channel bracket 8 x 4.3 x 0.5 cm; metal pins; spring diameter 3 cm.

The box is assembled from wooden blocks, their ends are connected with steel plates or corners, and the bottom goes 2 cm deep into the floor, then we fix it in the opening with steel pins.

This type of door consists of a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door.

The frame is made like this: they take a thick corner, its parameters are in direct proportion to the shield canvas, with 25 they take the 75th, with 50 they take the 100th corner. Next, we measure the garage and prepare the opening for attaching the frame, you need to make sure that its surfaces are smooth and even, if this is not the case, we take the grinder in our hands and work. Next, we are looking for a workspace for the welding process. We will have 2 channels on the welding site, their parameters are 20 cm less than the frame. We cut the corners lengthwise from both ends, making sure that they fit snugly. We weld them together, make cuts and use a four (five) electrode, create a frame, but do not weld very tightly. We apply it to the opening and control the density, if it is not there, then we adjust what happened and weld again, then we clean the seams. We do the same with the second part of the frame, then the same - on the second wall, the frame should be made double - internal and external, we install it.

A support for the channel bracket is made from the corner, in one shelf we make a hole to fix it to the posts, in the other - 3 holes to fix the spring bracket. We fix the bracket by drilling 3 holes in one of the shelves. Next, we make an adjusting plate from an iron strip, with it we combine the spring and the bracket. We bend the last turns of the spring with hooks, attaching the voltage regulator from the bar to the bottom. Create a hinge corner from the corner for the lower part, drill an 8.5 mm hole and weld it to the frame, retreating from the lower rib to the central part of the hole. Thus, we prepare for the manufacture of a lifting lever on a 12 cm hinge. Then we weld the plate for the voltage regulator to its end.

We need two corners to move the gate. We take two corners, join and connect along the edge so that the distance between the tops is at least 5 cm.We weld the rail to the plate with holes, leave 8 cm between the lower edge of the crosspiece and the guide axis.We weld a piece of channel with an indent of 12-15 see. Next, we attach it to the ceiling bar. You can install additional protection devices at will, as well as rubber edging and linings, they will make the structure more stable and will give stability to the structure.

Garage Doors

It is advised to spill a trench with concrete along the length of the stroke between the side posts, press the channel parallel to the ground, when it hardens, we weld both frames.

Installation of the canvas

We measure the diagonal, taking into account the dimensions, we bait it by welding, all sorts of gaps are excluded, we clean the seams and put the canvas. We attach the brackets and guides, their horizontal must be made perfect, then: we insulate the canvas, fix the metal sheet, clean the seams, degrease. We adjust the springs, fix the internal fittings. The whole celebration of work and design will take two or three days.

The option is difficult, but they are sealed and better protect the room. They can be electric or manual. The first option is convenient, as soon as you press a button or a remote control, you're done. But the manual drive breaks less often, and the shield for it is easier to make. The necessary parts cannot be made at home. Parts cannot be bought on the market, it is better to buy a factory kit.

The garage doorway should be measured and estimated whether a standard canvas is suitable, also check that the side parts and the upper part from the bottom of the opening are in the same plane. We add 50 cm to the height of the doorway (if the gate is with a drive - 100 cm), this is the length of the garage required for the gate to fit to its ceiling.

The option is difficult, but they are sealed and better protect the room.

Sectional doors consist of a leaf, locks, a movement mechanism, a spring balancing mechanism and guide modules. Along the edges of the opening, tires are attached, which are wound under the overlap, and the gate moves along them. It is better to buy polymer sections, they practically do not corrode, do not create noise, withstanding temperatures of -50 - +60.

Installation diagram

Create a markup to anchor the frame and components. Assemble a frame structure (not much different from a similar algorithm for up-and-over doors). Everything is standard: we put the frame, bolt the rails to the ceiling, but you don't need to drill holes and make other structures to hold them on the weight. We collect the canvas, starting from the bottom, we equip the panel elements with rollers. We protect the structure with casings. We check - if everything is done correctly, the canvas will not move by itself, hovering at the level at which it was installed.

It is worth saying in conclusion - homemade sectional doors must be safe. The stake is your own car, or even your life. You should be extremely careful about the installation rules, adhere to safety precautions and pay a small amount to a specialist who will check the quality of the door installation after the owner's efforts.

Do-it-yourself lifting gates

Self-production of garage doors allows you not only to significantly save money, compared to the option of purchasing and installing ready-made ones, but also brings moral satisfaction. It is much more pleasant for any owner to exploit something made with his own hands. It should be borne in mind that this structural element is not at all simple, and the importance of high-quality, reliable and beautiful garage doors is obvious.

Types of structures

Before proceeding directly to the manufacturing process, it is necessary to decide on the type of construction. In recent years, lifting gates have become widespread. They are of two types:

  1. Lifting and sectional; (on the picture);
  2. Lifting and turning; (See photo).

Garage door mounting technology

We propose to consider the technology of creating overhead gates as the most simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Having decided on the type of construction, you can go directly to the examination of the instructions for the manufacture and installation of overhead doors with your own hands.

Before starting installation work, it is necessary to complete the finishing of the adjacent ceiling and walls. Floor concreting works are allowed to be performed after door installation.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Assemble the frame from the bars (one transverse, two longitudinal).
  2. Fasten the timber to each other with plates.
  3. The frame from below should be deepened into the floor by 2 centimeters.
  4. Fasten the box with pins in the door opening.
  5. Assemble the door leaf from the selected materials.
  6. Sheathe the canvas with sheet metal.
  7. Make a support for the mechanism from the existing corner.
  8. Make holes (d = 10 mm) for fastening the bracket with a spring.
  9. Make two holes (d = 10 mm) in the longitudinal strips.
  10. Make an adjusting plate.
  11. Connect the spring and the bracket with the adjusting plate.
  12. Make a hinge assembly from the corner.
  13. Weld the frame and the hinge assembly.
  14. From two corners to make rails along which the canvas will move.
  15. Weld the perforated plate and guide.
  16. Mount the channel with a bolt to the ceiling beam.

At the first stage, the frame is assembled, then holes are drilled for the mounting brackets. After that, the box is installed and leveled, the holes between the profile and the wall are sealed with polyurethane foam. It is imperative to check the level of the correct installation of the frame.

The next stage of work is attaching the guides to the ceiling. Then the web is collected and inserted into the runners. Springs and levers are installed that provide lifting and movement of the web. On all sides of the shield, a profile for the edging must be installed, and from below there is a restricting bar that protects the gate stop from corrosion.

Necessary materials:

  • Bars made of wood measuring 120 * 80 (used for the box) and 100 * 100 millimeters (used in the manufacture of ceiling guides);
  • Metal pins;
  • Spring. The minimum diameter is 3 centimeters;
  • The corner for the frame and guide runners is 3.5 * 3.5 * 0.4 and 4 * 4 * 0.4 millimeters, respectively;
  • Bracket from channel 8 * 4.3 * 0.5 centimeters;
  • A rod (approximate diameter 0.8 centimeters) for the manufacture of a voltage regulator.

Video instruction:

The most important points to pay attention to:

  • The location of the guides should be strictly horizontal. This is necessary to avoid the web from getting stuck while driving. The best option is to install hinge systems;
  • It is necessary to correctly adjust the spring tension of the gate mechanism to ensure the stability of any position of the leaf;
  • For the safe operation of the gate, it is recommended to install safety stops to fix the curtain in one position or another.

The opening and closing of the swing-over doors is controlled either manually or by means of an electric drive, which is triggered by a button or a remote control. The latter option is obviously more convenient.

Features of the lift-and-turn design

The principle of operation of this type of gate is that the door leaf, consisting of a solid leaf, rises to the ceiling when opened. Sash movement is provided by the action of the hinge-lever device.

Design advantages:

  • Relatively high strength and resistance to burglary and possible penetration;
  • Silent operation;
  • The ability to manufacture yourself.

Self-production

  • Structurally, the gate consists of three main elements:
  • Box or frame;
  • Movable sash;
  • A device that closes and opens the gate.

The box is the base of the structure, beams are made, steel or wooden. In it guides are mounted along which the sash moves.

The lifting sash itself is made in the form of a single sheet of different materials: a sheet of boards, sheathed with metal, a sandwich panel, etc. An option is often used using a board made of boards, which is sheathed with galvanized iron on the outside, and pasted over with expanded polystyrene or some other heat-insulating material inside. No less popular is the construction of galvanized steel sheets coated on both sides with protective compounds and insulation between the sheets. Expanded polystyrene or extruded foam is used as a heater. It is allowed to arrange a wicket in the canvas or install anti-vandal roller shutters (Alutech) from the front side of the structure.

Another video about the features of DIY manufacturing:

The gate opening mechanism is made according to drawings and diagrams, or it is bought in a ready-made version. The second option is quite acceptable, since there is a large supply of such products on the market at quite reasonable prices.

Overhead sectional doors

The main feature of overhead sectional doors is the presence of a leaf made up of a number of approximately half-meter panels. In the process of opening, the canvas moves to the ceiling, when closed, it accordingly returns down to its original position. The panels are connected by hinges on hinges, the canvas moves along the guide runners.

Panels are usually made from various materials: steel, plastic and wood are used. For effective thermal insulation, the door is filled with polyurethane foam internally.

Design advantages:

  • Simplicity of construction;
  • Operational safety;
  • Relatively good durability.

Cons of the design:

  • Low resistance to burglary;
  • Quite high noise level;
  • Difficulty in self-production.

It is unrealistic to make such gates on your own, since almost all structural elements for reliable operation require a factory level of manufacture. Otherwise, you will have to sacrifice the performance of the structure. The only possible saving option is to self-assemble the purchased ready-made kit.

Comfortable opening and closing of the garage is provided by various types of doors. One of the most popular and most convenient types is the lifting mechanism. This design, along with aesthetics, can significantly save space, which is especially beneficial in confined spaces. Garage doors can be equipped with several types of drive mechanisms, however, the principle of their operation remains the same in all cases.

Construction characteristics

It is customary to distinguish two groups that differ from each other in the formation of the canvas:

  • sectional doors, made or purchased with their own hands (based on several fragments connected by movable hinges);
  • lifting garage doors (have a solid plane that rotates about a horizontal axis and is carried away by mechanisms to the ceiling).

Quiet operation is achieved through the use of roller devices and guide beams.

Pros and cons - what to look for when installing

Along with the quiet operation of the mechanism, there are the following advantages of hand-made garage doors:

  • monolithic canvas serves as a high-quality barrier from getting inside unwanted guests, having increased resistance to burglary, in contrast to folding models

This design is reliable protection against thieves.

  • virtually no space is required to perform opening / closing maneuvers;
  • the materials used during the manufacture of home-made lifting gates have a high degree of resistance to corrosion processes;
  • with full opening of the sash passage does not take up additional space;
  • the outer and inner surfaces can be treated with almost any type of decor or panels;
  • do-it-yourself insulation of the garage doors with the help of expanded polystyrene plates is allowed;
  • homemade overhead garage doors are equipped with an electric drive and a manual drive to ensure opening in all cases;
  • the drawing of a garage door with a lift will be relevant for both single and double garages.

Do not forget about the design flaws:

  • do-it-yourself lifting garage doors are mounted exclusively in rectangular cavities;
  • easily moving under the ceiling, the slab lowers the height of the ceilings by 150-250 mm;
  • in case of possible damage to individual sections of the whole canvas, it is impossible to replace part of it; you will have to change the entire surface of the gate with your own hands;
  • due to the fact that a spring mechanism is often present in the design, it must be taken into account that it has limiting values of the load that increases during the installation of insulation or decor, and in such cases the installation of a counterweight will be required;

Due to the loose connection of the outer frame of the overhead door to the inner perimeter of the opening, sufficiently large gaps can form. To eliminate them, you can use rubber seals, which it is advisable to rub with silicone during the cold season, so as not to break when opened.

Principle of operation

Diagram of how exactly the lifting of the canvas occurs

Do-it-yourself folding folding gates are distinguished by a fairly understandable design and functioning. They are based on the following elements:

  • frame, sheathed with canvases on both sides;
  • guides along which the roller mechanism moves, which transfers the plate from a vertical position to a horizontal one;
  • a working drive using a spring or rod mechanism.

The frame is formed from a steel square or rectangular building profile. It must be strong at the same time in order to support its own weight and not be overly heavy.

When opened, the upper part of the canvas moves under the ceiling, while the lower part remains outside in the form of a visor. The springs are stretched when the gate is closed, and when the gate is open they are set in a free position. There are two types of mechanisms:

  • Construction with built-in counterweights, in which there is a cable fixed in the lower area of the frame and thrown over the rotating block. A counterweight is installed on the opposite side of the winch. A similar scheme is relevant for heavy canvas.
  • Operator for overhead gates with hinge-lever mechanisms. It is distinguished by its reliability and simplicity in execution. This requires competent adjustment of the spring preload and maximum accuracy when installing the guides.

For an electric drive, switching on by means of a remote control is often used.

Installation

Do-it-yourself measurements for lifting garage doors are preliminarily carried out, drawings are formed based on the real conditions of the span. The assembly is carried out in a specific sequence:

  1. The frame is being prepared for the opening. If it is made of wood, then squares and metal plates are used for fixing. In the case of using a steel profile, a welding machine and a flat welding area will be in demand.
  2. The frame-box is mounted in the opening. The bottom needs to be deepened into the floor to get rid of the step.
  3. The leaf for the gate leaf is formed. To make the gate warmer with your own hands, an insulation made of stone or basalt wool is placed in the cavity of the frame. The outer sides are sheathed with a profile or sheet metal

  1. With the help of a corner, a support is formed. A pair of holes with a diameter of 10 mm are made in one of the shelves to fix the longitudinal posts. The second has three holes for attaching the spring bracket. The channel bracket is used as a spring support.
  2. We mount the spring and bracket together through the adjusting plates, which are made from cut metal strips. We carry out the engagement for the end coils of the spring. A rod tensioner is used at the bottom. In it, one side has a thread, and the other has a hook from the ring.
  3. The hinge assembly is mounted below. It requires a corner with a hole of 8-9 mm in diameter. The part must be welded to the frame structure above the bottom rib and below the opening for the lift handle.
  4. A plate with holes for adjusting the tensioner will need to be welded to the end of the lever.
  5. Roller guides are formed. For them, a channel or I-beam profile with an internal distance between the surfaces of 50 mm is used, and you can also weld two corners yourself into a U-shaped profile.
  6. One side is boiled to a perforated plate. It is necessary to leave a gap between the bottom cross platform and the axis of the rail.
  7. On the other side of the rails, prepared pieces of the channel are welded. It is secured to the ceiling with secure bolted connections.

Assembly of the mechanism

The assembly is completed by grinding the welding seams, after which the gate is primed and the entire finished structure is covered with paint. It is recommended to use a spray gun for these purposes so that the paint is light evenly.

It is important to ensure the opening height of at least 2.2 m from the floor to the surface of the open gate. Transparent inserts can be made into the canvas so that more sunlight penetrates inside. You can also install a garage door in the plane.

Special attention should be paid to the insulation of the gate, since the area of heat loss is quite large. There is no fundamental difference between the insulation of swing and lift-and-turn ones - you can also use mineral wool boards, polyurethane or penoplex. The only thing you should pay attention to is the method of fastening. If penoplex (blown insulation) is used, then the gate area is divided into small fragments that are blown out. Plates of polyurethane foam or mineral wool should be fixed with decorative panels.

You should not use glass wool for insulating the doors - with the same thermal insulation coefficient as mineral wool, it is more dangerous in operation due to the high degree of flammability.

VIDEO: How to make a lifting gate with your own hands

Today, overhead garage doors are very popular, and they are also a convenient, reliable and practical protection for a garage, but at the same time, factory options are quite expensive. Opening with the help of a special mechanism, they take a horizontal position under the ceiling and move forward for a short length, thereby forming a small shelter in the form of a visor. As already mentioned, factory samples are quite expensive, but no one bothers to study the Internet resources for the independent manufacture of such gates, and armed with the necessary tools and drawings to make them with your own hands.

Advantages and disadvantages of the lifting structure

The lifting structure perfectly fulfills the function assigned to it and has a number of indisputable advantages over other types of garage doors, but at the same time it is not without its disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • No additional opening space required. Unused space under the ceiling is used.
  • The one-piece construction of the blade provides reliable protection against penetration.
  • Any external decoration and decoration can be used.
  • The door leaf can be additionally insulated with expanded polystyrene.
  • It is possible to supply equipment for automatic opening.
  • Can be used in both single and double garages.

The disadvantages are primarily due to the design features of the lifting mechanism and the inability to do it otherwise.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation is only possible in rectangular openings.
  • In case of damage, a one-piece canvas must be replaced, since it does not imply partial repair.
  • When the door is open, the opening height decreases.
  • The gate mechanism is designed for a certain load and this should be taken into account when insulating.
  • Some complexity of installation.

The device and scheme of work of folding garage doors

The lifting (panel) gate system is a fairly simple mechanical device. The main and load-bearing elements are the frame, guides and a lever-spring mechanism that moves the sash. The mechanism can be controlled either manually or using an electric drive controlled by a remote control (remote control). When opening the gate, levers attached to the bottom of the sash are used, and two guides for the movement of the rollers, fixed at the top at the ends of the sash. Opening is carried out by lifting the lower part of the sash by the handle and is done quite easily, since the stretched springs of the lever mechanism help in opening the gate.

There are two types of overhead gate mechanisms:

  1. Lever-spring is a fairly simple and reliable mechanism that is popular among garage owners. Mounting features: precise adjustment of the tension springs and high quality and precision mounting of the roller guides.
  2. With counterweights - it is used mainly on doors with a large sash weight. The cable is attached to the bottom corners of the sash and passes through the block to a counterweight attached to the other end of the winch.

Lifting garage door drawing

When preparing a drawing for your opening dimensions, you should use ready-made solutions, slightly adjusting them to your dimensions. Here is an example of blueprints for making a gate:

Frame drawing, dimensions must be set according to your gate dimensions.

What is required for manufacturing

For the manufacture of the sash frame, rectangular shaped pipes with dimensions 40 * 20 and a wall thickness of 2 mm are most suitable. For transverse and longitudinal spars, we also use profile pipes, but of smaller dimensions - namely 20 * 20 * 2 mm, to reduce the weight of the structure. A profile sheet is best suited for sewing the front and inner sides of the sash, since it is already coated with an anti-corrosion compound from the factory. You can also use galvanized sheet metal.

For guides, it is ideal to use a channel with a width of up to 20 cm. The size of the channel shelf depends on the width of the rollers used in your particular case. The box to which the lever-spring mechanism is attached in the garage doorway can be made of a wooden beam 100 * 50 mm. For these purposes, you can also use a metal corner with a shelf of 50 mm.

Sliding rollers and lever-spring rollers are purchased separately in a shop specializing in sliding gates.

For thermal insulation of the gate, for reasons of price and quality, it is advisable to use expanded polystyrene with a thickness of 40 mm and a density of 15 to 25 kg / m 3.

Instruments

To work, the following tools should be at hand:

  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine;
  • tape measure, pencil;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver, screwdriver;
  • drill, drill;
  • set of wrenches;
  • level.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

  1. The frame installed in the opening is the main power element of the gate. It accounts for the main load of the entire garage door system. The box is made of a 100 * 50 mm wooden bar or a thick metal corner. The width of the corner shelf should be 1.5 times wider than the sash thickness, that is, if the sash thickness is 40 mm, then we take the corner with shelves at least 60 mm. The details of the box are installed with the letter P, two on the sides of the opening, one on top. If we use wood, then we fix it with 100 mm self-tapping screws into pre-prepared wooden mortgages. In the case of using a corner, we make fasteners for anchor bolts, however, they are perfect for the first case as well.
  2. Let's start assembling the frame for the gate leaf. We cut the profile pipe according to your drawing. We lay out the frame elements on a flat horizontal surface and, having checked the right angles with a square, grab the joints. Before fully welding the joints, it is necessary to check the length of the frame diagonals with a piece of cord or a tape measure. If necessary, you can correct the product and proceed with the full welding of the joints. We weld gussets to the corners of the frame, as shown in the drawing, to strengthen the rigidity of the structure.
  3. We clean the welded seams from burrs and the entire frame from rust with a grinder.

  4. We cover the frame with an anticorrosive primer and paint it with alkyd enamel in 2 layers with intermediate drying.
  5. We weld to the upper corners in the end, brackets with rollers.
  6. We put it on the frame and fasten the profile sheet with self-tapping screws with a drill and a rubber washer with a pitch of 15–20 cm. We attach the sash opening handle to the M8-M10 bolts. This operation can be done at the end of installation work, which significantly reduces the physical stress on workers when checking the operation of mechanisms.
  7. We attach roller guides to the ceiling. We check their parallelism and perpendicularity to the opening.
  8. We temporarily install the sash in the opening to mark the attachment point of the lever-spring mechanism. We remove the sash and fasten the levers along the marks to its ends with self-tapping screws.
  9. We install the sash and check the operation of the gate. If everything is in order - the gate opens and closes easily, then we remove the sash and attach the levers to the bolted connections.
  10. Installing and adjusting the springs in place and checking functionality.
  11. Bonding a rubber seal around the perimeter of the frame to seal the gaps.
  12. Installing a door lock.

How and what to insulate

Classic heaters used for these purposes are mineral wool and expanded polystyrene boards. Polyfoam compares favorably with a mineral slab in that it does not shrink over time. We will insulate the sash with foam plastic 40 mm thick and 20 density. First, insert the foam plastic without fastening into the sash in order to cut off all the necessary cuts to size. Styrofoam sheets are glued to the profile sheet from the inside between the side members on "liquid nails". Next, we fasten the inner plane of the sash with a sheet of galvanized sheet metal with self-tapping screws and a drill.

Exploitation

For the convenience of using the garage door, an electric drive with a control unit can be installed to the existing opening system, which is operated by commands from the remote control. When purchasing a drive, make sure that it matches your type of gate.

In winter, rubber seals must be periodically lubricated with silicone grease to avoid freezing of the sash and damage to the seal when opening the gate. Also, periodically pay attention to the lubrication of the linkage system and the support rollers.

The lifting garage door system is easy to implement on its own, so almost any car owner with the skills of welding and working with metal is able to do this, the main thing is to be more careful with the installation of such critical elements as guides. From the beginning of work to the complete installation of the gate, you can manage it in 2 days if you call your friends or acquaintances as an assistant.
