This kontakion is read three times, then the 1st ikos “The representative angel...” and the 1st kontakion “The chosen one from all generations...”.

First prayer

Receive, Lady Theotokos, the tearful prayers of Your servants who flow to You. We see Thee in the holy icon, bearing Thy Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, in the womb. Even if you gave birth to Him painlessly, even though the mother weighed the sorrow and infirmity of the sons and daughters of human beings. With the same warmth falling upon Thy whole-bearing image and tenderly kissing this, we pray to Thee, All-Merciful Lady: we, sinners, condemned to give birth to sickness and nourish our children in sorrow, mercifully spare and compassionately intercede, but our babies, who also gave birth to them, from the grave deliver from illness and bitter sorrow; Grant them health and well-being, and their nourishment will increase in strength, and those who feed them will be filled with joy and consolation, for even now, through Your intercession from the mouth of a baby and those who piss, the Lord will bring His praise.

O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy on the mother of the sons of men and on Your weak people: quickly heal the illnesses that befall us, quench the sorrows and sorrows that are upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighs of Your servants. Hear us on the day of sorrow, falling before Your icon, and on the day of joy and deliverance, receive the grateful praise of our hearts. Offer our prayers to the Throne of Your Son and our God, that He may be merciful to our sin and weakness and add His mercy to those who lead His name, so that we and our children may glorify You, the Merciful Intercessor and the faithful Hope of our race, forever and ever. . Amen.

Second prayer

O Most Holy Lady Lady Theotokos, who never leaves us in earthly life! To whom will I offer prayers, to whom will I bring tears and sighs, if not to You, consolation to all the faithful! With fear, faith, love, Mother of the Belly, I pray: may the Lord enlighten Orthodox people to salvation, may He give us children to You and Your Son to please You, may He keep us in the purity of humility, in the hope of salvation in Christ, and grant us all, in the cover of Your grace, earthly consolation. Keep us under the canopy of Thy mercy, Most Pure One, help those who pray for childbirth, turn away the slander of evil freedom, grave troubles, misfortunes and deaths. Grant us grace-filled insight, a spirit of contrition for sins, grant us to see all the height and purity of Christ’s teaching given to us; protect us from disastrous alienation, so that we all, gratefully praising Your greatness, may be worthy of heavenly tranquility and there with Your beloved, with all the saints, we will glorify the One God in the Trinity: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD “HELPER IN CHILDREN”

It has been known since time immemorial that in moments of severe suffering during the birth of children, women resort with especially fervent prayer to the Savior and His Most Pure Mother. In pious families even in our time you can see the icon of the Mother of God, called “Help in Childbirth.” On this icon, the Blessed Virgin is depicted standing tall and raising her hands to the mountain, with the Child at her breasts, as in the “Sign” icon. Mothers bow before this icon in fervent prayers, calling for help to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, who painlessly gave birth to Christ the Savior. Mothers call on Her in a terrible moment full of mystery, believing that She is the strong Intercessor and Helper of all those who suffer and are burdened before God.

And who, resorting to the Queen of Heaven, does not receive consolation and help from Her in sorrows and illnesses?! Her omnipotent intercession gives a successful outcome to the resolution of all illnesses and suffering, from which no wealth, no power on earth can save!

There is also another very ancient icon, called “Image of the Most Holy Theotokos, Helper of Women to Give Birth to Children.” In this icon, the Mother of God is depicted with an open head and loose hair over her shoulders, with her hands folded on her chest, with the fingers of her left hand covering half the fingers of her right hand. Below the folded hands, the Infant of God is depicted sitting with his chest on his chest, whose right hand gives a name-giving blessing, and the left one lies on his knee; the extremities of the legs are visible from under the clothes. The Mother of God wears a red and gold outer garment, with a gold star on each shoulder; The underwear is dark green with gold and gold stars and the same trim on the collar and sleeves. The head of the Mother of God is slightly tilted. The Savior’s clothes are yellow with gold, and on the chest they turn dark green. The entire image is placed on a crescent.

There are other images of the icon of the Mother of God “Helper in Childbirth”.

How and how can an icon and prayer to the Mother of God help a pregnant woman?

Every woman carrying something in her womb constantly thinks about childbirth. How will they proceed? Will everything be okay? With the baby? With herself?

The prayer “Helper in Childbirth” will help you avoid all these fears. This prayer is read to the Mother of God, as she is the intercessor of women, and, of course, of all Christians. Anyone can turn to her in various everyday questions and disputes, since she asks and prays for all sinful human people, and has patience for mistakes. The Mother of God is also an assistant in childbirth.

After all, the Mother of God herself is a mother, therefore she is the one who needs to pray not only as labor approaches, but throughout pregnancy. She does not refuse, she gives help to anyone who asks. A believer experiences grace, because he feels that the Lord is with him, his support and sign. It is in prayers that a person dissolves and all his worries and stress go away; he feels and believes that God will definitely hear his prayers and will not leave him without support. The one who asks, praying to the Most Holy Theotokos, receives both support and help.

Prayer to the Mother of God: how to pray?

A woman, having learned that another heart is beating under her heart, must definitely read a prayer for the child, so that the baby is under the protection of the Mother of God and the pregnancy proceeds well.

And the prayer for children to the Most Holy Theotokos is as follows:

“O Most Holy Lady Virgin Theotokos, save and preserve under Your shelter my children (names), all youths, young women and infants, baptized and nameless and carried in their mother’s womb. Cover them with the robe of Your motherhood, keep them in the fear of God and in obedience to their parents, pray to my Lord and Your Son to grant them what is useful for their salvation. I entrust them to Thy maternal gaze, for Thou art the Divine Cover of Thy servants. Mother of God, introduce me to the image of Your heavenly motherhood. Heal the mental and physical wounds of my children (names) caused by my sins. I entrust my child entirely to my Lord Jesus Christ and Your, Most Pure, heavenly protection. "

Prayer must be said every day, and after birth the child must thank the Mother of God with a prayer of thanks. Prayers of gratitude can also be said during pregnancy. After all, people have many reasons to express gratitude to the Mother of God. It's not just pregnancy. Gratitude for food, water, air, sun, peace, life on earth. There are many reasons to be grateful, people just don't often remember them. Pregnancy is a great miracle and speaks of God’s love for a woman carrying a child.

Nowadays the statistics on this matter are very sad. Many couples have been trying to have a child for several years and they are unable to fulfill the main dream in their lives.

Over time, a woman understands that neither career, nor money, nor success in life are the most important thing. There is no meaning in life if she has not given birth to a child, since motherhood is her main purpose in life. Without a child, life becomes empty. After all, nothing in life can compare with children's babbling and children's laughter. This is a very great gift - to be a mother, this is what they pray and ask the Mother of God for. After all, the fullness of life comes only with the appearance of children. A lot of pleasant worries appear, but at the same time there is a lot of joy.

The love of children is unconditional, they simply love their parents not for some sweets or things, but for the fact that they gave birth to them. After all, there is no one who will love you as much as your children. They are so defenseless, affectionate and expect the same love and affection in return. You definitely need to think about this during pregnancy. After all, a baby is a great joy, and soon this joy will settle in your home. To do this, you need to earnestly ask the Mother of God and our Lord in prayers, thank and ask that the birth be successful and happy motherhood begin.

Preparing for childbirth spiritually

If a woman feels well, she does not have toxicosis, weakness and other “gifts” of pregnancy, she must visit the temple. It is not necessary to stand for the entire service; you can sit, since standing for a long time during pregnancy is physically very difficult. Before giving birth, it is best to confess and take communion - after this, you are definitely ready for the birth of a child in a Christian way. If you have never done this before, but really wanted to, but did not have the determination, this is an excellent reason to gain courage and take this serious, deliberate step.

After all, every person has sins, some have more, some have less, but they exist. Even in the book there are written details of preparation for confession, there is a list of sins that any person can have. Everyone will find them at home. After going through confession and communion, such extraordinary lightness appears, inner purity and understanding sets in that the baby will be born into the world without your sins. It is necessary to maintain this state longer, and better yet, for the rest of your life, forever.

But living an earthly life, a person cannot help but sin. So, at every step we are surrounded by anger, irritation, melancholy, and dissatisfaction. Understanding that the Lord God is within us, it will be easier to resist and not allow into the soul everything unnecessary, bad, that does not come from the Lord. It is imperative to do good.

A woman who is expecting a child withdraws into herself. Those things that previously could have somehow hurt or offended her fade into the background. She receives her emotional protection from the Lord. She is a home for her baby. By praying to the Mother of God, a woman brings love and kindness to this house and becomes calm and balanced. Prayer helps to reorganize, impatience and irritation disappear. The mother who bears him in the bosom of faith will have a child who is worthy and a believer. This is what every mother dreams of.

Appeal to the Mother of God in prayer during childbirth

Even in ancient times women in labor said before the miraculous iconostasis Heavenly Queen, such as:

This is not the entire list, as there is no end to it. After all, in fact, it doesn’t matter who you pray to, as long as the prayer at the onset of labor and assistance in childbirth is sincere.

The prayer will become more powerful if you ask that during the period when the expectant mother’s contractions begin, her relatives and friends utter a very fervent prayer request, being either at home in front of the icons or in church.

The Virgin Mary has many images where she is depicted with a baby in her arms. However, the icon of the Mother of God, such as the “Helper in Childbirth,” is in great demand among pregnant women and women in labor. After all the very image of the Mother of God is the patroness of women and a great helper in various situations, which is why people turn to her with the most powerful prayer. The Mother of God will definitely hear the request that comes from the bottom of her heart and will help, because She also had the opportunity to experience the pangs of childbirth.

Image of the icon Helper in Childbirth

Even in ancient times, according to history, when a woman gave birth and felt that death was already near, she fervently prayed to the Mother of God. Nowadays, in many families that worship God, you can see a unique miraculous image of Her, in front of which a prayer is read for the woman in labor during childbirth.

Usually on this icon The Mother of God is depicted standing at full height, her head uncovered, her hair loose and falling over her shoulders. Her hands rest on her chest. A little below the hands on the womb is the Eternal Child, who blesses with one hand and the other is on the knee. The baby is dressed in short clothes, allowing his legs to be visible.

The outer robe of the Most Holy One is red and gilded, and she has a gold star on each shoulder. The lower robe has a dark green tint, and also gold stars and gilding. The same trim is located along the sleeves and collar. The Mother of God stands with her head slightly bowed. The baby is dressed in yellow clothes, which are also gilded on the chest and have a dark green tint.

The image itself is very unusual and is placed on a crescent, which is similar to icons such as:

  • "The Omen",
  • in the ancient image of the Mother of God “Helper to wives to give birth to children.”

Request in prayer: what is the help?

Prayer request for women:

Childbirth and prayer

When packing things for the maternity hospital, you must take with you icon of the Mother of God. As soon as the contractions subside and the pain subsides, you need to pray, saying the Hail Mary. Let the icon of the Queen of Heaven be nearby. She will help you get past all the bad things. The women who took the icon with them noticed its help. The birth was surprisingly easy, and the baby was born healthy. You need to believe and pray very hard.

Prayer

Grant them health and well-being, and their nourishment will increase in strength, and those who feed them will be filled with joy and consolation, for even now, through Your intercession from the mouth of a baby and those who piss, the Lord will bring His praise. O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy on the mother of the sons of men and on Your weak people: quickly heal the illnesses that befall us, quench the sorrows and sorrows that are upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighs of Your servants. Hear us on the day of sorrow who fall before Your icon, and on the day of joy and deliverance receive the grateful praise of our hearts. Offer our prayers to the Throne of Your Son and our God, may He be merciful to our sin and weakness and add His mercy to those who lead His name, as we and our children will glorify You, the merciful Intercessor and the faithful Hope of our race, forever and ever. . Amen.

The intercession of Christians is shameless, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the voices of sinful prayers, but advance as good to help us who faithfully call Thee: hasten to prayer and strive to entreat, interceding ever since, the Mother of God, those who honor Thee.

In this article we want to talk about the icon for pregnant women “Assistant in Childbirth”. Women pray to this shrine to help them cope with the physical torment that they will have to go through during childbirth. However, not only pregnant women can turn to this icon for help. Girls who dream of motherhood, but suffer from infertility, can also pray to the “Helper in Childbirth.” We will present to you the text of the prayer to the icon of the Mother of God “Helper in Childbirth”, we will tell you about its meaning and location.

The torment that every woman in labor goes through is so painful and strong that women, trying to find a way to ease their care and take into account the child, turn for help to the church, where they pray to the icon of the Mother of God, who has long served as the all-powerful intercessor of suffering women in labor.

There is a special icon that helps women during childbirth. She is called “Assistant in Childbirth”. Although it has other names, which are also often used today when talking about the icon of the Virgin Mary and Child. But each of these icons has its own meaning in Orthodox history:

  1. "Blessed womb." The first mention of this icon was recorded in a collection of Orthodox manuscripts from the early 18th century. It says that the shrine, made of beautiful wood, originated in Italy, and to be more specific, in the town of Brie (which is why the shrine is also called Bargradskaya), and was brought to our land in the 14th century. By the way, the relics of St. Nicholas were brought along with it. After the icon arrived on Russian soil, it was immediately brought to Moscow. Here it was decorated with a precious frame (by the way, it is still kept in the Armory Chamber of the State Metallurgical Complex). In the 19th century, the icon was decorated with a new frame made of pure gold, but it was stolen by the French during the war with Napoleon. Because of this, a silver frame was made for the shrine, but it was also confiscated during the Soviet era during a political campaign to confiscate church valuables (this happened in 1924, after which the fate of the icon is not known). But the entire Orthodox world still celebrates the day of this icon on January 8th.

  1. “The word became flesh.” This icon is called Albazinskaya (Amurskaya), because it was found in a fortress called Albazia. Hieromonk Hermogenes brought it there in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, the shrine was transported to the city of Sretensk, because the Chinese began to attack the Amur. The shrine was saved by Bishop Benjamin of Kamchatka. At his request, a silver frame was made for the shrine in this city so that the icon could be worn in processions of the cross. (Note that in those days this ritual procession took place only through the territory of the Far East).

According to historical facts, the icon “The Word became Flesh” helped the residents of Blagoveshchensk cope with the siege of the city by Chinese tribes at the beginning of the 20th century and the global plague epidemic that broke out almost at the same time.

The entire Orthodox world reveres this shrine and celebrates its day on March 22. Now the shrine is located in Blagoveshchensk.

Both of these canonical versions of the image of the Mother of God belong to the shrine “Helper in Childbirth”. You can bow to all of them, asking for help in birth pangs.

The meaning of the icon “Assistant in Childbirth”

The shrine “Helper in Childbirth” is an icon depicting the Mother of God:

  • She has an uncovered head, which is slightly tilted to one side, and loose hair down to her shoulders (this, by the way, is a Western tradition of icon painting, which confirms the Italian origin of the shrine).

  • The Virgin Mary's shoulders are covered with a red cape with gilding. On each shoulder and sleeve there are stars depicted in gold threads.
  • The Mother of God folded her hands on her chest (with the fingers of her left hand covering the fingers of her right).
  • Under the hands of the Virgin Mary, Christ is depicted in a mandola, which emphasizes the fact that he is supposedly in her womb. His right hand is raised up - with it he blesses everyone who turns to the shrine, and his left hand lies on his knee.
  • The Savior covered his shoulders with a yellow cape with gold inscriptions. Only on his shoulders and sleeves is a crescent moon.

This description already fully explains the meaning of the shrine. The clergy encourage women to pray to this icon so that it will help them in childbirth. They say that after attending a church service during the reading of the akathist to the “Helper in Childbirth” icon, a woman gains peace of mind and hope for a successful delivery.

“Helper in childbirth”: what does the holy face help you cope with?

Women who prayed to this icon claim that it helped them even in situations where they gave up, because none of the doctors could guarantee that they would one day be lucky enough to become a mother due to numerous miscarriages and threats of termination.

There are also cases where a woman’s pregnancy was going well, but only the baby took an incorrect position shortly before birth. After the expectant mother went to church and prayed to the shrine, the baby turned over and the woman did not need hospitalization. Well, what else can you call such a case, if not a miracle?

To summarize, we can confidently say that the icon “Helper in Childbirth” after the prayer service to her:

  • facilitates pregnancy (this is especially felt by women who constantly experience some kind of complications over the course of 9 months)
  • conquers infertility
  • saves the life of the child if doctors threaten termination of pregnancy
  • helps give birth to a healthy baby
  • facilitates the process of childbirth
  • calms the expectant mother, helps her gather strength and get rid of fears

The miraculous icon “Helper in Childbirth”: where is it located?

As we have already mentioned, the shrine “Helper in Childbirth” has survived to this day in 2 lists.

If you want to bow to the shrines, then you must know where they are:

  • One of the versions of the “Helper in Childbirth” icon is located in Moscow - in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration and in the Church of All Saints
  • There is also a shrine in the Church of the Holy Princes Gleb and Boris in the city of Borovsk
  • You can pray to Our Lady in St. Petersburg Holy Trinity Cathedral
  • In Yekaterinburg - in the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ
  • The icon “Helper in Childbirth” is also kept in Serpukhov in the Nikopol Church.

In each of the above-mentioned churches you can buy the “Helper in Childbirth” icon in different variations. Very often, women buy small icons with a prayer written on the reverse side; it can be read during the process of childbirth. In addition, pendants depicting the Mother of God with Christ in her womb are especially popular.

In every maternity hospital or maternity ward, there must be an icon “Helper in Childbirth” hanging on the wall or on the bedside table, so that the woman in labor can pray to the Mother of God for help during physical pain.

Icon “Assistant in Childbirth”: where to hang it?

Like any other icon, the shrine “Helper in Childbirth” should be located on the east side in the house:

  • it can be hung on the wall, placed near the bed, but only from the side opposite the entrance to the room;
  • if your pregnancy is difficult, then hang the icon above the head of the bed on which you sleep and rest;
  • if you cannot get pregnant for a long time, then place the icon in the place where the iconostasis is located in your house and read prayers in front of it every day.

“Helper in childbirth”: how to pray to an icon?

Before reading a prayer in front of a shrine, a woman must be psychologically prepared for this process. If you sincerely do not believe in the power of the icon, then, of course, it will not help you. You can ask the Mother of God for help only when your soul and heart are open, pure and sincere. Read the prayer every day, maybe even several times. As soon as you feel that you are sad, bad, in despair again, immediately go to the icon - prayer will help you gather your strength.
