Close the heating radiators in the apartment with drywall. How to close radiators and pipes with drywall. Profile frame construction

Not all interior styles will suit the design of a modern bimetallic or aluminum battery. The decorative properties of cast-iron radiators of the MS-140 series are even worse. To eliminate this discrepancy, decorative screens and boxes are used. And a drywall battery box is one of the popular options for solving this problem.

Is it possible to make a battery box out of drywall

The screen in the immediate vicinity of the radiator reduces heat removal from its surface, and this worsens the efficiency of the heater. But not in the case of a drywall box for heating radiators. It is enough to give an example of the design of electric convectors, in which the heater is in a closed case with two rows of holes - from below for cold air entry, from above - for warm air to exit. Such a device increases the speed of convection, due to the fact that the duct plays the role of an air duct.

The only drawback of the method is that the battery works for heating both as a convector and as a radiator, and the screen will absorb part of the infrared radiation. To compensate for these losses, holes are cut out in the front wall of the box for the drywall battery or a factory decorative screen-lattice is installed as a front finish, and the wall behind the radiator is finished with a material with a reflective surface (for example, foil foam).

Materials and tools

For sheathing radiators with drywall, the following materials and tools are needed:

  • Standard sheet of moisture resistant GKL
  • Galvanized metal rails and rack profiles
  • perforated corner
  • Serpyanka mesh
  • Dowels or anchors
  • Primer and putty
  • Perforator and drill
  • Construction knife and scissors for metal
  • Screwdriver or screwdrivers
  • Level, ruler, corner, pencil
  • Sandpaper
  • Brushes and spatulas

Selecting a box sketch

Before sewing up the battery with drywall, you must select the type of construction. There are three upholstery options.

  • Hinged screen, which is hung on hook brackets attached to the wall. The advantage is the ability to remove it at any time and gain access to the battery. Disadvantage - the design of the box frame must be rigid and self-supporting, and given the weight and fragility of the drywall sheet, this is difficult to implement in practice.

  • Installed screen. The method consists in finishing the radiator niche with drywall. The easiest option to implement if the battery does not go beyond the niche and the screen is part of the wall sheathing. During a major overhaul, this technique allows in a complex to solve the problem "how to close the radiators and pipes with drywall"

Data-lazy-type="image" data-src="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/004..jpg 625w, https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/ https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/004-70x53.jpg 70w" sizes="(max-width: 625px) 100vw , 625px">

  • Floor box. The design is a cabinet rigidly fixed to the wall and floor, sheathed with plasterboard, the upper plane of which can serve as a window sill. This option is most popular when it is necessary to close the battery without carrying out complex repairs. But if in the second method, in order to sew up a niche for a plasterboard heating radiator, you only need to make (or buy) a front panel, then in this case it is necessary to develop a design sketch and detailing with dimensions

Data-lazy-type="image" data-src="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Ekran-korob..jpg 500w, https://remontcap.ru/wp- content/uploads/2017/08/Ekran-korob-300x225..jpg 174w, https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Ekran-korob-70x53.jpg 70w" sizes="(max -width: 500px) 100vw, 500px">

The main requirements for the dimensions of the box:

  • Height - the top panel must be at least 50 mm higher than the radiator surface (the standard for the location of the battery relative to the window sill)
  • Length - along the front, the radiator should not occupy more than 75% of this linear size of the box (the standard for the position of the battery in the niche under the window)
  • Depth - the front panel of the box should be 10 cm away from the battery.

How to sheathe the battery under the window with drywall - with an overhanging window sill or with a drywall top panel and slots for warm air, depends on the characteristics of the window and glass.
Usually, the window sill is installed so that it does not overlap the battery and hangs over it by no more than 2/3 of its width. It is more aesthetically pleasing if the box fits completely in width under the window sill, and in this case it will have to be changed. And it is possible that such a solution will lead to the appearance of frost and ice on the window - warm air from the radiator will not blow on the glass, and it will freeze over. This will not happen if there are triple-glazed windows or energy-efficient glass installed in them.
Do I need to somehow sheathe the walls behind the battery with drywall if it is covered with a box? There is no such need if the rest of the wall was not leveled and the GKL was not sewn up.

markup

There are no strict requirements in the regulatory documents for placing the battery under the window - it is important that its edge does not go beyond the border of the opening from the side of the riser pipe. But when installing it, they try to make it so that it is located symmetrically relative to the window. So the installation of drywall boxes under the battery must be symmetrical with respect to the vertical axis of the window. Therefore, first you need to find and mark on the wall and on the floor the center of the window opening, from which marking should be carried out.

If the battery is not installed under the window, then its center will be the axis of symmetry of the box.
The markup sequence is as follows:

  1. They beat off on the floor in the center of the opening or battery a line perpendicular to the wall;
  2. From this line, measure the depth of the frame without taking into account the skin;
  3. From the obtained point, draw a line parallel to the wall;
  4. On this line from the center, half the length of the box is laid in each direction, excluding sheathing and trim;
  5. From the points obtained, two perpendicular lines are drawn to the wall, and from them, using a level, two lines are drawn on the wall to the window sill.

As a result, the projection of the installation site of the box should learn on the floor and wall behind the radiator.

Frame installation

Mounting the frame begins with the installation of UD 27 × 28 profiles along the inside of all marking lines on the floor and wall. Mounting step - 15-20 cm with a uniform distribution of points along all lines. The choice of the type of fastener depends on the base materials: wood screws, dowels for concrete or butterfly anchors for hollow building blocks.

A special tape is laid between the profiles and the wall, which serves as protection against the spread of structural noise.

The rest of the frame is mounted from the rack profile CW 60 × 27:

  1. Install two corner front racks along the height of the box;
  2. Connect them with short horizontal jumpers with vertical guide profiles on the wall;
  3. Both racks are connected at the top with a horizontal long jumper;
  4. To ensure the rigidity of the structure, side jumpers are added in the middle of the structure.
  5. The number and direction of additional stiffening ribs in the front part of the box are chosen according to its size and type of screen.

After that, you can sheathe the frame.

Frame sheathing

First, sheathe a niche for a drywall battery:

  1. The side walls are cut to size and sewn up, cutting out holes for the radiator pipes if necessary;
  2. If the window sill is not part of the box, then cut out the top panel, which closes the frame from above;
  3. Panels are cut out of the GKL for sheathing part of the facade around the screen and these areas are sewn up.

Data-lazy-type="image" data-src="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/8086422_copy_1.jpg" alt="(!LANG:drywall battery box" width="500" height="450" srcset="" data-srcset="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/8086422_copy_1..jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px">!}

After that, the corners are closed with a perforated corner, the joints are reinforced with sickle tape, primed, puttied and the surface is cleaned. The result should be a niche with a battery, which, after finishing, is covered with a decorative lattice screen. Thus, the task “how to sew up heating radiators with drywall” can be solved independently.

Old cast-iron batteries can hardly be called a model of aesthetics, so many apartment owners want to hide them, fitting them into the interior as much as possible. A good solution is a drywall battery box, which you can mount without the involvement of professional builders.

Drywall completely covers the radiators, it is easy to process and fairly cheap material. But working with it requires certain skills. We hope this article will shed light on incomprehensible points and help you successfully solve the problem.

Pros and cons of drywall constructions

Our compatriots have been sheathing batteries with drywall for a long time, so there are many useful developments in this area. Why is this material so popular?

Here are the main advantages of drywall:

  • Environmental friendliness (no harmful substances are emitted in the premises, and the fire resistance of the box is very high).
  • Multivariance (a wide range of drywall varieties is presented in hardware stores).
  • Budget (the material is very cheap).
  • Ease of installation (any adult male can handle the task).
  • Space for imagination (you can make designs of any degree of complexity).

Before you start lining the battery with drywall, you should find out the whole truth about the shortcomings of such a solution. You will encounter some things during the installation process, others will appear during the operation of the box.

So the cons:

  • Brittleness (the material crumbles easily, so you need to work with it carefully).
  • The need for additional finishing (after installation, arm yourself with a spatula).
  • Low moisture resistance (drywall warps, swells and deforms from water).
  • Storage features (by placing the sheet vertically, you will find over time that it began to bend).

Preparatory work and markup

Decided to sew up the heater yourself? Any finishing work requires serious preparation.

Let's start with the selection of tools:

  • building level;
  • metal knife;
  • drill (the presence of a screwdriver nozzle is welcome);
  • pliers;
  • perforator;
  • dowels and screws;
  • ruler-corner;
  • pencil;
  • roulette.

In addition, you will need the drywall sheets themselves, putty and U-shaped metal profiles. Then you need to select a design sketch. You can build a cabinet under the heater (standing version), or make the box hang above the floor. Make sure the battery looks decent. If the old paint is peeling off, it must be completely peeled off and the device repainted.

Marking under the box

After waiting for the paint to dry, proceed to the markup. You will have to take accurate measurements of the battery (errors within a millimeter are allowed).

Use this tool for this:

  • roulette;
  • building level;
  • ruler-gon;
  • pencil.

The width and depth of the structure depend on the dimensions of the radiator. At the edges, the minimum indent should not exceed 10 centimeters. Narrow window sills need to be dismantled, since the gap between them and the battery must be at least 3 centimeters.

Markup drawing is conditionally divided into three stages:

  • Drawing horizontal lines. You will draw a line along the hanging level. If you plan to install a "standing" box, draw three lines at once (depth and leading edge).
  • Drawing vertical markings. Attach a square to the bottom face, draw a perpendicular. To mark the required size, use the level.
  • Markup connection. The lines should close over the battery. The unifying function is carried by a horizontal segment.

Make sure that you have a square (or rectangle) in front of you, the vertical lines of which correspond to the plumb line. Double check the accuracy of the markup - you will not be able to correct the shortcomings later.

Frame installation

Before closing the battery with drywall, it is necessary to mount a metal frame. You have profiles, dowels and screws that will hold the future structure together. Arm yourself with metal shears, a puncher, a screwdriver and pliers. First you need to cut and fix the supporting elements, they are mounted on the wall as follows:

  • The U-shaped profile is pressed against the wall with either side.
  • A small mark is made (use a screwdriver).
  • Holes are drilled under the fasteners.
  • The dowels are inserted into the holes.
  • The profile is pressed to the desired location.
  • Screws are screwed in.

Holes in the profile are marked in increments of 15-25 centimeters. Make the markup in advance, otherwise you will experience a number of inconveniences during installation. Now fasten all the prepared guides to the wall. Use metal shears at corner joints. The next stage is the formation of the depth of the box.

Procedure:

  • Cut profile pieces to desired length.
  • Make 5 cm cuts along the edges of the fold.
  • Fold the middle down.
  • Cut off the sides, guided by the channel shelf.
  • Attach the pieces to the edges of the vertical guides at right angles (make sure the pieces are oriented towards the inside of the room).
  • Connect fragments with long profiles.

It's time to check the quality of the work. If the structure wobbles, you did something wrong. For example, they “regretted” short elements or made a mistake when installing fasteners. When installing long fasteners, it is better to reinforce the frame in short lengths (4-5 pieces are enough), then you will like the result.

Tighten the screws carefully, otherwise the profile will be damaged. A kind of window is left in the frame for installing a removable screen. So you will ensure a constant flow of heat into the apartment.

Working with drywall

The hard work is left behind. Now we hide our battery under the drywall, and for this we need to cut rectangles of the appropriate size.

Sequencing:

  • Attach the drywall sheet to the profile frame.
  • Mark the surface of the sheet, mark the cuts.
  • Take a clerical knife and carefully cut the elements according to the dimensions of the box.
  • Lean the prepared fragments to "your" parts of the structure.
  • Secure drywall rectangles with screws.

The drywall that covers the battery is very fragile, so the knife must be sharp. There should be 3-4 self-tapping screws per linear meter of drywall. Hats are recessed by a millimeter - so that they do not tear the cardboard cover.

An important point: the room should receive heat. There are two ways to solve the problem, the easiest of which is to drill ventilation holes in the sheets (their recommended diameter varies within 5 centimeters). A more aesthetic solution seems to be the installation of a removable grille. If you decide to equip the front wall with a plastic screen, be patient and use additional fasteners. Plastic does crack sometimes, so be careful with it.

Final finishing

Now you know how to sew up the battery with drywall. In order for the box to take on a finished look, it must be properly finished.

Action algorithm:

  • The joints between the sheets of drywall are carefully sealed. You should get a smooth surface ready for further processing. First you need to put a sickle mesh on the joints. After that, the surface is puttied.
  • The places where fasteners are installed are processed in a similar way.
  • Do you want to strengthen the corners and make the lines clearer? Place perforated corners on the drywall.
  • The box is spattered.
  • After drying, the walls are leveled.
  • The final stage is grinding (fine-grained sandpaper is used for this).

Having coped with the finishing, you can proceed to the design of your box. The finishing technique will depend on the features of the interior and the overall color scheme.

Other Solutions

You can close the batteries in the room not only with drywall sheets. Some apartment owners mount standard boxes from this material, and change the front panel to something more original.

Here are the most typical solutions:

  • Radiator grille (plastic or metal). Among the advantages of such structures, it is worth noting good heat transfer and constant access to the battery. The main disadvantage is the trivial design.
  • Built-in niche. The pipes are covered with sheathing, and the battery itself is hidden behind a folding screen. The main advantages are the easy accessibility of the unit in the event of a breakdown and minimal heat loss. A good option for the kitchen, where space saving is relevant.
  • Wooden wall-lattice. Harmonizes with classic interiors, allows you to quickly get to the battery in an emergency. Cons - bulky, low functionality.

The technique of installing a drywall box is quite simple, anyone can master it in a short time. Don't let radiator pipes spoil your interior.

In the apartments built by the hands of Soviet workers, as in some modern buildings, cast-iron radiators are installed. These elements do not always fit the general interior of the room - in this situation, you need to think about how to close the battery with drywall and not reduce the level of heat transfer.

According to the existing housing code and redevelopment rules, heating systems cannot be hidden directly into the wall. But you can close them with an additional wall of alternative material.

How to hang a battery - on drywall and a removable screen

Plasterboard finishing of batteries is more often used - this material allows you to quickly and easily hide the flaw in the room, make the appearance more attractive.

How to fix the battery on drywall - marking stage

The markup of the future design is carried out using:

  • measuring tool- roulette, ruler, corner;
  • descriptive tool- a simple pencil, marker;
  • precision instrument- building or laser level.

Carrying out this stage, it is desirable to adhere to the exact dimensions, limited to whole centimeters. Millimeters are used only in the case of a particularly precise design, for example, for an established interior project.

Before you sew up the battery with drywall and get rid of its unpleasant appearance, you need to decide which way to terminate the markup:

  • box - a simpler and faster method of work (only the area of \u200b\u200bthe battery is closed and, literally, 12-20 cm beyond it);
  • wall - a more time-consuming method (the wall with the radiator installed is completely sealed; if the heater is installed near the window, slopes must be made).

In terms of the amount of work, the termination of batteries according to the first method is simpler: a smaller amount of material is used and a small number of construction processes are carried out. In the second case, even fewer building processes are used, but more material is used.

Radiator box

When constructing a box, the design takes up little space, covering a little more space than the radiator itself. The depth of such a box depends on the width of the heater (most radiators are narrower than radiators with metal plates).

Note! The edges of the structure must protrude at least 10 cm beyond the edge of the radiator - otherwise it will not be possible to install a removable screen on the front side.

Instructions for marking the box:

  • Depending on the required position of the structure, a horizontal strip is drawn. If the box hangs, measure the distance from the floor and use the level to draw a marking line. If the structure rests on the floor, there will be 3 lines (two along the edges - depth, one front - the edge of the structure).
  • It is necessary to set a corner to the bottom face and draw vertical marks - we achieve a right angle. With the help of the level, we bring the vertical lines to the required size.
  • The same marks are marked on the vertical lines, between which a connecting segment is drawn.

The result should be a square or a rectangle (in the case of resting on the floor - additionally marking the base).

How to close batteries with drywall - wall device method

After analyzing the room and thinking about how to cover the radiators and pipes with drywall and do it right, the decision to install an alternative wall comes by itself.

The essence of the solution is that together with the radiator, the entire surface to which it is attached is closed. This method is wasteful, since you can get by with small volumes of material by arranging a dotted box. But the wall is the only way to completely hide the heater from the room with your own hands.

For the wall device, the frame is built to the entire height of the room:

  • With the help of the level, several vertical lines are drawn on the base for the frame. Step - 60-100 cm. Mandatory lines for profiles in the corners of the room.
  • From each vertical line it is necessary to extend to the floor. For this, a corner is used. The depth of the floor lines is equal to the width between the main wall and the alternate.
  • Similar to the floor, lines are drawn on the ceiling - of equal depth and strictly parallel.
  • The last marking lines are drawn above and below the heater, at a distance of 7-10 cm.

Marking is also carried out on the sides of the radiator - along the perimeter of the device, profiles are needed in which a removable screen will be installed. But to get rid of unnecessary work, you can make basic markings (which are the entire height of the room) directly on the sides of the radiator.

Metal frame under the wall

Before you close the heating battery with drywall, decorating the interior of the room with this, you need to arrange a frame. For its construction, metal channel-shaped profiles are used, 60-70 mm wide.

In total, in the process of doing the work you will need:

  • profiles - as the main frame;
  • screws (40-60 mm) - fastening the structure;
  • dowels (40-60 mm) - fastening in the surface;
  • scissors for metal - for cuts, if necessary, bending the metal;
  • pliers, screwdriver, drill or puncher - an auxiliary tool.

The profiles that are adjacent to the wall are attached first.

On our site you can watch a lot of videos on the construction of frames for drywall, but the main instruction is as follows:

  • a metal profile is attached by either side or center to the marking line;
  • a screwdriver leaves a small mark on the wall;
  • a puncher makes a recess for the size of the mount;
  • a dowel is inserted into the hole made;
  • a profile is attached to the prepared place;
  • fastening is carried out with a screw.

After attaching the metal to the wall, bastings are made in increments of 15-25 cm. Holes are prepared immediately for the entire profile.

By the described process, all the necessary parts of the frame are attached. In the case of attaching a corner of two elements, you need to cut the necessary parts with metal scissors.

When the parts that are attached to the wall are installed, we move on to the depth of the frame:

  • we cut parts of the profiles of the required size;
  • we cut both edges of the element at the place of the fold by 4-5 cm;
  • we bend the middle down, and cut the sides to the width of the profile channel shelf;
  • we attach the segments to the edges of the main long elements at an angle of 90 degrees towards the room.

The last part is connecting the upper and lower short parts, elements.

Note! When constructing a wall covering the battery, long vertical metal elements are used, so two short ones at the top and bottom are not enough - at least 4-5 pieces are needed.

The frame in finished form should be a strong structure, not stagger. If the frame staggers, it means that the fastening was not carried out qualitatively, or there are not enough additional short elements.

Sheathing batteries with drywall

The most difficult steps in resolving the issue of how to close the radiator with drywall and not deprive the room of heat were left behind. If everything is prepared, installation is a simple procedure.

Drywall fastening is carried out according to the following method:

  • a sheet of material is attached to a metal base;
  • a descriptive tool marks the place of the cut - this is how the material is marked into the necessary pieces;
  • the prepared part is attached to the corresponding part of the frame and fastened with a screw.

The pitch of the screws when fixing the material in the battery box is 10-15 cm, an example of the location of the fasteners can be seen in the photo above.

It is better to prepare and fasten one part of the material, if you cook everything at once, you can make a mistake due to protruding corners in some places.

Note! When screwing in a screw, it is important to feel the measure - if you put the fastener too deep, you can damage the front side of the drywall.

A removable screen should cover the radiator for ventilation and heat transfer to the room. Its first part, the inner one, is attached to the metal even before working with drywall. Then the main material is arranged, and the removable, outer part of the screen is put on at the last stage.

When dealing with the question of how to close the battery in a room with drywall and not spoil the interior, it is important not to use radically new colors. The best option is to arrange a box or an alternative wall in the general colors of the room. But first you need to prepare the surface for the final finish.

The finishing process proceeds according to the following principle:

  • Sealing joints between parts of drywall (see also the article on puttying drywall joints). To do this, a small piece of a sickle mesh is superimposed on the seam, then the joint is smeared with putty.
  • Fastener attachment. It is carried out according to a similar technique - serpyanka and putty.
  • Puttying the entire structure (see also the article How to putty drywall - the choice of putty and the technology of its application). With the help of spatulas, the entire surface of the product is puttied, whether it be a box or a wall. When the mixture dries, it is leveled by cleaning it with fine sandpaper.

The final stage is the finishing of the product - often it is painting or wallpapering. It is better to use the material that is more in line with the overall interior of the room, if its price, of course, is within the budget.

Heating radiators and plumbing to them often spoil the interior of the room. Especially if the room has old cast-iron radiators, completely devoid of any aesthetic appeal. Therefore, the desire of the owners to hide these elements of the heating system is understandable, but at the same time not to worsen the quality of their work. It is logical to use for these purposes an easy-to-process and affordable material - drywall. How to close pipes with drywall? How to hide radiators so that this does not affect their heating performance?

Design Options

Before you close the battery with drywall, you should analyze the placement of radiators and pipelines in the room. Depending on their location, you can choose one of two options for using drywall:

  • A box made of plasterboard with a decorative grill covering the battery.
  • A false wall that hides radiators and the supply to them behind its plane.

Options demonstrating how to close the battery with drywall with your own hands are shown in the photo below. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages:

  • The installation of the box compares favorably with the smaller amount of material required. But such a design does not always organically fit into the interior of the room. In addition, pipes will have to build their own boxes, which will further complicate the task. In addition, the presence of such protrusions will seriously interfere with the installation of suspended ceilings or laying laminate on the floor.

  • The construction of a decorative wall will require more material consumption, but it will allow you to get a flat plane that can be easily finished in accordance with the overall design of the room. In most cases, such a structure is even easier to build than a box that closes the battery.

Construction of the box

This drywall construction can be fixed to the floor or hung with a gap above its surface. The first option is preferable - so the frame has two planes for support, which makes it stiffer.

When designing the box, it should be taken into account that for the normal functioning of the device, a gap of at least 10 cm is required between the radiator and the drywall surface.

  • With the help of a level (better than a laser one) and a tape measure, marking is carried out. The boundary of the upper edge of the structure is drawn on the wall, perpendiculars are lowered from it to the floor. With the help of a square, lines are laid by the depth of the box. By connecting them, they get the lower border on the floor. As a result, two rectangles are obtained - on the floor and on the wall.
  • The guide profile is fixed along the lines with dowel-nails in increments of 15–20 cm.
  • Protruding vertical racks are made from a profile, bending it at an angle of 90˚. Preliminarily, the side shelves are cut on the details with metal scissors and bent. The bend points can be fixed with the help of "bugs" (small self-tapping screws for metal), but it is better to use a cutter.

There is an opinion that fastening with a cutter is not strong enough. However, when using a professional tool, the connection not only turns out to be very reliable, but also compares favorably with the absence of protruding parts, which is inevitable when using "bugs".

  • The required number of horizontal jumpers is mounted. The more of them, the more rigid the structure. For a drywall box, 1-2 is enough for each of the planes, with the exception of the front.
  • Parts of a decorative lattice or a removable screen are attached to the frame.

It is necessary to create a solid structure, any vibrations of the frame after installation are unacceptable.

  • At the final stage, drywall strips are cut to actual dimensions and fixed with self-tapping screws every 25 cm. Later, the drywall is puttied, and the final finish is carried out in accordance with the general interior of the room.

False wall installation

It is advisable to erect a decorative wall if, in addition to masking the radiators, it is necessary to decide how to close the heating pipes with drywall. With this method, not so much space is lost, but the appearance of the room wins very significantly.

At the first stage, markup is done:

  • We mark the fastening lines of the profiles on the wall. They should be located in increments of 60 cm in order to join drywall sheets on them. In addition, two extreme guide profiles are attached at a distance of 30 cm from the corners.

  • Additional guides will be required if there is a window on the wall: they are useful for attaching slopes. It is advisable to place a couple more profiles at a distance of 10 cm on each side of the radiator - for mounting a decorative grille.
  • Using a square, the marking lines are transferred to the floor and ceiling, their length is the distance from the most protruding part of the radiator (usually a tap) to the wall plus 10 cm.

In the design of the decorative wall, it is necessary to provide technological openings for access to taps and other parts of the pipeline for preventive maintenance or inspection. Such inspection hatches are subsequently decorated with a fine finish and become invisible in the general interior.

After marking, the frame is assembled. Its installation does not fundamentally differ from the assembly of a box or other drywall construction, so it makes no sense to give a detailed sequence of operations. The metal frame for the false wall will differ from the construction of the box in a large number of horizontal jumpers. They are needed not only for joining drywall sheets, but also for stiffening. Experts recommend installing these elements every 60 cm, securely attaching them to the racks using self-tapping screws or a notcher.

Elements cut from drywall are attached to the frame. When deciding how to close the radiators in an apartment with drywall, you should choose a moisture-resistant gypsum plasterboard: such a wall will not suffer from condensate that forms on pipes, or in case of possible leaks in the heating system.

I decided to close the battery in the kitchen with drywall. The area of the kitchen is quite large, allows you to implement the idea without much damage to the space. And the presence of individual gas heating in the apartment and not too harsh winters allow you to lose some of the heat from the battery without compromising the overall temperature in the apartment.

To begin with, I dismantled the old window sill, and from the ceiling metal profiles began to build a frame around the battery.

For rigidity, I additionally strengthened the long horizontal bars.

After assembling the frame, I installed a window sill, sheathed the frame with drywall and proceeded to puttying the structure.

After puttying and stripping, I painted the box along with the walls with water-based paint in two layers. That's what came out of it.

After that, I installed a decorative grille.

For normal heat exchange of the battery, I made holes in the windowsill and installed ventilation grilles.

The end result is like this.

The battery gives off heat well, a stream of warm air comes out of the ventilation holes, the windows do not sweat.

Professionals, do not kick much. I did it for the first time, I already know all the mistakes))

P.S. I made a similar entry in another community, but it was deleted there due to inconsistency with the topic, so I posted the entry here. Who has already read - do not grumble))

  • How the frame works: nuances

Many old apartments and modern houses are equipped with cast iron radiators. Very often, these devices do not fit into the overall interior of an apartment or building. To correct the situation, you need to resolve the issue of how to close the battery with drywall so as not to reduce the degree of heat transfer.

Screen layout for a radiator.

According to the redevelopment rules and the housing code, it is forbidden to hide the heating system directly in the wall. It is allowed to make a covering additional wall for them from a suitable material.

Some Features

In most cases, drywall is used to finish the battery. This material makes it possible to hide the lack of space, create a beautiful appearance. Before installation, the markup of the intended design is made. For this, a variety of tools are used, from a simple tape measure to a laser level.

When marking the design, you need to make accurate measurements in centimeters. Millimeters are needed if a very precise design is being made, for example, for an existing interior. Before closing the battery with drywall, creating a beautiful appearance, it is necessary to determine what the seal will be, and under this method to do measuring work. The easiest and fastest way is to make a box. This method is used when you need to close up only the battery itself and 20 centimeters beyond it.

The most laborious way is the wall. In this case, the entire wall where the radiator is located is completely sealed. For the battery at the window you need to make slopes.

The smallest amount of work requires finishing according to the box method.

Screen frame drawing.

It will take a small amount of material, the construction process consists of several operations. For the second case, building material will require much more. The design of the box requires little space. It simply closes the radiator and a small area next to it. The depth of such a box is calculated based on the existing width of the radiator. Basically, radiators are much narrower than batteries made of metal plates.

In accordance with the location of the structure, a horizontal strip is drawn. In the case of a hanging box, you need to measure the gap from the floor, using a level, draw a marking line. For a floor-mounted structure, you will need 3 lines. Two of them will determine the depth, and one - the edge of the structure.

To get a right angle, you need to fix the corner to the bottom face and draw vertical lines. Using a level, draw vertical lines until the required size is obtained. Marks are made on these lines, between which a connecting line is drawn.

After the completed drawing work, a geometric figure will be obtained, most often a square, sometimes a rectangle. If the support is made on the floor, it is necessary to make additional marking of the base. After the analysis of the premises, the correct decision to close the radiator and heating pipes with drywall is made without difficulty. Basically, it is necessary, together with the battery, to cover the entire surface where it is installed. This method is not the best way out, as it will require a lot of material. For a point box, small amounts of material will be required. Note that the wall is not the only way to completely close the radiator with drywall on your own.

Screen mounting diagram.

To mount a wall, the frame must be the same height as the room. First, with the help of a level, several lines are made, with a step of 60 cm, marking the base of the frame. Be sure to draw lines intended for the profile in the corners of the apartment.

To continue the vertical line to the floor, you need to use a corner. The depth of the floor lines is equal to the width between the new and old wall. Similarly, lines are drawn on the ceiling. They should be parallel and the same depth. The final marking lines at a distance of 10 cm must be drawn at the top and bottom of the radiator. The sides of the radiator must also be marked. Profiles must be installed around the radiator to install a removable screen. In order not to do extra work, you can make basic markings right on the sides of the radiator.

How the frame works: nuances

Before closing the battery with drywall, making the interior more attractive, they build a frame. It is made from 60 channel. For installation, you will need a variety of tools, for example, a puncher, scissors for cutting metal, and so on.

First, profiles are attached that are completely adjacent to the wall. The construction technology is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. A metal profile (channel) is installed to the marking line.
  2. Using a screwdriver, a small notch is made on the wall.
  3. Using a perforator, make a recess corresponding to the size of the mount.
  4. A fastener, for example, a dowel, is placed in the hole made.
  5. A profile is attached to an already prepared place.
  6. Self-tapping screws are used to fasten the profile.

Basting for the metal attached to the wall should be made in increments of 15 cm. Holes are immediately made for the installed profile. According to the technology described above, all necessary parts of the frame are fastened. When it is necessary to fix a corner consisting of several elements, the necessary parts are cut with scissors for cutting metal.

After the complete installation of all parts attached to the wall, the depth of the frame is made. First, the necessary parts of the profile are prepared, they are cut into the required size. The edges of the parts at the fold are trimmed by a few centimeters. Then the middle of the profile is bent down, the sides are cut to the width of the profile shelf. At an angle of 90 degrees, to the edges of the longest parts, the segments made are fixed. The final operation of manufacturing the frame is to connect all the parts of the frame to each other.

The frame must be strong and not wobble. If this is the case, then the fastening is poorly done or too few additional small elements are installed.

Sheets of drywall are attached to the frame, which are pre-cut into the appropriate size.

How to close pipes and radiators with drywall

Creating the interior design of his home, every owner dreams of making it comfortable, attractive and unusual. But there is one caveat - cast-iron batteries that are striking, especially if the apartment is finished in the latest fashion. Consider how to close the battery with drywall yourself.

To give the room a modern look, it is enough to build a beautiful drywall screen. It will hide the old and unsightly battery from prying eyes. It is worth noting that the work can be done by hand, and the cost of materials is small. Some ordinary people doubt whether it is possible to close the batteries with drywall. Let's consider this question in detail.

Options for hiding heating pipes in the interior of the apartment

There are many ways that help to disguise the heating devices in the apartment, without interfering with maintaining a comfortable temperature in the room.

You can order custom-designed radiators, but this method is quite expensive and not available to a wide range of consumers.

If the financial capabilities of your family do not allow this, then you can close the radiators with a simple screen. There are several options for such devices:

  • buy and fix a hinged screen on the radiator;
  • create a wooden element that is attached above the radiator;
  • build a drywall box that will disguise the battery.

If we consider the last option, then it is the most popular. This is due to the ease of assembly and the inexpensive material used for the construction. But this method cannot be called perfect, since in case of unforeseen breakdowns or leaks, the box will have to be completely dismantled.

Hinged battery screen

Before constructing a structure, a thorough inspection of the heating system should be carried out. Check how reliable the joints and connections are. If the pipes are old, then it is better to replace them, the old battery must be replaced if it is unreliable. Only after repairing the heating system in the apartment can work begin on creating a screen for a drywall radiator.

There are parameters that a drywall construction must meet to mask a heating battery:

Important! Some apartment owners completely cover the batteries with GKL sheets - in no case should this be done.

Necessary tools and material

Before starting work, prepare the tool. To build a structure around the battery you will need:

In addition to the tool, the following material is needed:

The material must be prepared in the right amount so that you do not have to go to the store to buy more.

Algorithm of actions when creating a box to hide the battery

There are two ways in which you can disguise the heating battery behind a drywall construction: close the radiator with a decorative plasterboard wall or build a regular drywall box around the radiator.

Which way to apply? It all depends on the layout of the apartment and the location of the heating communications in the room.

The construction of the box is advisable if the radiator is located on the wall. You can do this with your own hands from drywall quickly enough. This method is more preferable, since only the battery is masked, and the usable area is not affected.

The dimensions of the box will depend on the battery to be hidden. It is important to consider that the edges of the box will be about 15 cm further from the battery, from all sides.

Whether the box will be hovering or standing on the floor depends on the interior of the apartment and the designer's decision. Once a decision has been made on the design of the box, surface preparation and marking should begin.

Step-by-step installation instructions

Foundation preparation

For the construction of the structure, the base must be properly prepared. The old coating is cleaned from the surface, dirt and dust are removed, primed.

If the wall on which the battery is located has significant irregularities, then it should be made even with gypsum plaster. Then it is desirable to putty the surface, since it will be impossible to do this after the construction of the structure.

Markup and drawings

If it is supposed to make a floating box to mask the battery, then:

If a box standing on the floor is mounted, then the markings start from the top edge of the battery, and perpendicular lines are drawn from top to bottom. See how to do it in the photo.

In addition, the box is marked on the floor in such a way that the end of the box on the front side protrudes 15 cm relative to the radiator.

Screen frame drawing example

In some apartments, heating radiators are installed in niches that developers provide under the windows. In this situation, only the second method of constructing the box is suitable.

Some apartment owners want to radically change the interior of their apartment. At the same time, the construction of a false plasterboard wall is allowed, which hides all heating communications, but it is worth noting that this method is more financially costly.

Frame assembly

The first thing to do in order to close the battery with drywall is to mount the frame. To do this, you need to take metal profiles, galvanized 60x28 and 27x28.

First, the elements that will be on the wall are fixed. The algorithm is this:

After that, the second level of the frame is mounted. Cut the profile into segments according to the desired length. Cut the edges of the elements by 5 cm, along the fold of the profile.

box frame

The edges of the profile are cut off, and the middle notched part is bent to the side, fixing the segments at an angle of 90 degrees to the wall profiles

In the case of the construction of the structure along the height of the entire wall, the profile step will be 60 cm.

The next step is to attach the vertical segments to the front of the structure. Once the frame is ready, you can proceed to its sheathing.

Important! The frame, made of a profile for masking a radiator, must be strong and rigid.

Fastening drywall to frame

Cut the GKL into pieces of the desired size. Fasten them to the frame with black self-tapping screws, in 15 cm increments.

Self-tapping screws are screwed in very carefully, with a screwdriver at low speed. Make sure that the head of the fastener does not fall into the drywall and does not spoil the material.

It is worth noting that working with the material is quite simple. You can equip a corner false fireplace made of drywall, which will heat the room.

Heat Hole Installation

As soon as a drywall box for the battery is built, a “window” remains in it from which the battery will be visible, it is covered with a decorative screen, it will help warm air to be evenly distributed throughout the room.

Finishing the finished structure

Rough finishing of the box is carried out according to the following technology:

  • the seams between the pieces of material are sealed with sickle and putty;
  • putty is applied to the caps of self-tapping screws;
  • as soon as the seams dry, the entire surface is puttied in two layers;
  • after the structure has dried, it should be sanded.

On this, the rough finish of the drywall structure that covers the battery is ready.

Design options

You can decorate a box that serves to mask a heating radiator with any material: paint, glue wallpaper, finish with decorative plaster. Facing will depend on the overall interior of the apartment and the preferences of the owner of the premises.

Close the heating battery with drywall with your own hands: photo

How to hide the battery and pipes with drywall with your own hands. Stages of installation work with step-by-step instructions and photos.

Plasterboard finishing of batteries is more often used - this material allows you to quickly and easily hide the flaw in the room, make the appearance more attractive.

markup

The markup of the future design is carried out using:

  • measuring tool- roulette, ruler, corner;
  • descriptive tool- a simple pencil, marker;

  • box - a simpler and faster method of work (only the area of \u200b\u200bthe battery is closed and, literally, 12-20 cm beyond it);
  • wall - a more time-consuming method (the wall with the radiator installed is completely sealed; if the heater is installed near the window, slopes must be made).

In terms of the amount of work, the termination of batteries according to the first method is simpler: a smaller amount of material is used and a small number of construction processes are carried out. In the second case, even fewer building processes are used, but more material is used.

box

Wall

Frame device

Before you close the heating battery with drywall, decorating the interior of the room with this, you need to arrange a frame. For its construction, metal channel-shaped profiles are used, 60-70 mm wide.

In total, in the process of doing the work you will need:

  • profiles - as the main frame;
  • screws (40-60 mm) - fastening the structure;
  • dowels (40-60 mm) - fastening in the surface;
  • scissors for metal - for cuts, if necessary, bending the metal;
  • pliers, screwdriver, drill or puncher - an auxiliary tool.

The profiles that are adjacent to the wall are attached first.

On our site you can watch a lot of videos on the construction of frames for drywall, but the main instruction is as follows:

  • a metal profile is attached by either side or center to the marking line;
  • a screwdriver leaves a small mark on the wall;
  • a puncher makes a recess for the size of the mount;
  • a dowel is inserted into the hole made;
  • a profile is attached to the prepared place;

  • we cut parts of the profiles of the required size;
  • we cut both edges of the element at the place of the fold by 4-5 cm;
  • we bend the middle down, and cut the sides to the width of the profile channel shelf;

Assembly of the structure

The most difficult steps in resolving the issue of how to close the radiator with drywall and not deprive the room of heat were left behind. If everything is prepared, installation is a simple procedure.

Drywall fastening is carried out according to the following method:

  • a sheet of material is attached to a metal base;
  • a descriptive tool marks the place of the cut - this is how the material is marked into the necessary pieces;

Finishing work

When dealing with the question of how to close the battery in a room with drywall and not spoil the interior, it is important not to use radically new colors. The best option is to arrange a box or an alternative wall in the general colors of the room. But first you need to prepare the surface for the final finish.

The finishing process proceeds according to the following principle:

  • Sealing joints between parts of drywall (see also article about). To do this, a small piece of a sickle mesh is superimposed on the seam, then the joint is smeared with putty.
  • Fastener attachment. It is carried out according to a similar technique - serpyanka and putty.
  • Puttying the entire structure (see also the article).
