In particular, this is known to many tourism lovers since the Soviet times of Riga. If you want to go to Riga, we offer you information about the attractions to be seen in this city.

Lyme watch

The original urban watches are located in the center of the square, where in Riga it is customary to negotiate a date. Lyme watch is located in a place surrounded by landmarks - Latvian national opera, monument of freedom, and bastion slide. From the very moment of its establishment, the clock helped to navigate to the work of people. Thus, the Riga government planned to develop punctuality of employees. A little later, they fastened the Lyme Confectionery Factory in the emblem.

Riga Castle

The construction of the castle began in the XIV century, but since then the castle has been destroyed many times and reconstructed. The last time the major reconstruction of the castle was carried out at the beginning of the XVI century. And until the middle of the century, he was considered the residence of the Livonian Order.

Subsequently, the castle replaced the rulers many times. Since 1922, the castle became a presidential residence, and during the times of the Soviet Union even visited Pionerolerge. The castle is in charge of many underground transitions and almost a hundred years have not been rebuilt.

Three brothers

So in Riga, three buildings are called, fraternally tightly adjacent to each other. These buildings were formed in the city in the XV century. Nowadays, "three brothers" contains the state center for the protection of cultural monuments and the architectural museum. The buildings are located on a small castle street, which used to be the urban outskirts, where artisans led their work.

... what to say: Riga is a very cool city. We stayed here three and a half days, and during this time the capital of Latvia presented us with a lot of unforgettable impressions. Finding into the cycle of her narrow streets, you seem to fall into some other reality, where the air is full of amber light forged lanterns, and the songs of street musicians as if they are intertwined with the songs of the Baltic Wind. I will not hide: I liked our travel to Riga. Therefore, writing this article, again scrolling in the head of memories of those days, somehow in a specialty warm and pleasant.

Hopefully yours trip to Latvia You will like it no less than our. And in order to help you make your trip a little more interesting and brighter, we have prepared this little review for you, gathering all interesting activities and entertainment in it, which certainly need to devote time, while traveling through the Latvian capital.

16 things worth do during trips to Latvia

 • Settle in an old mansion.

This option will allow you for a short time to feel like a real inhabitant of this city, will help to better understand it and penetrate it atmosphere. Choosing an apartment instead of a standard hotel, you get a chance to "look behind the scenes" and see the city like the locals see it. Moreover, settle in one of the houses of Old Riga is possible for quite a little money. It is possible to find a good option, as well as save a little, you can use the AirbnB website (which, by the way, offers a small bonus to all new project users. To get it just register this link).

From the window of our apartment, for example, it was a stunning look. Meet the morning, looking at such beauty always in a special nice.

 • Wander around the old town.

Well, there is probably not necessary to explain anything. The Old Town is a real heart of Riga, his soul and its main center of attraction. Therefore, these places you are unlikely to pass the party. In this place, the present and past are intertwined between themselves the most bizarre. Replicas of old buildings are adjacent to the original buildings, no longer one hundred years. And the pretty street cafes, original art installations and modern cars of wealthy Rigaan surprisingly harmoniously complement the image of old squares and alleys.

However, all this you probably mark it without me. Therefore, I will not work in vain to ship you with all this unnecessary information. Instead, it is better to throw a few pictures here, which, probably, much more eloquently give the atmosphere of these places.

 • Take pictures on narrow streets of Riga.

Do not know, what to do in Riga? Arrange yourself a small photo session! The capital of Latvia is an amazing photogenic city. Therefore, a few interesting personnel will be able to find anyone. In general, all fans of VKontakte and Instagram will definitely like it.

The freaking out of the film "Spectrum" is dedicated ...

Lady with a purse

 • Feel yourself a film meter on Jauniela Street (Jauniela).

It so happened that on this colorful street during the time of the USSR, two cult films were removed at once. At one time, there was a famous biker Street from the Cinepopus about the famous owner of Sherlock Holmes. And also the Flower Street of the Swiss "Bern, who is familiar to us all by the TV series" 17 moments of spring ".
Without visiting this place trip to RigaDefinitely will be incomplete.

 • To make a desire at the Monument "Bremen Musicians".

As in many other cities in Riga, there is a place where tourists' stakes are friendly something clutch / vertet, hoping that this nontrivial ritual will fulfill some of their innermost desire. Believe in such things or not - the case of everyone. But to visit the Riga Monument to the Bremen Musicians is definitely worth it. At least because it is one of the most popular and photographed monuments of Latvia.

The monument is located for the Church of St. Peter (in the area Sk? R? U iela). On the photo its location is marked by a group of tourists

The system of execution of desires is quite simple - faded, rubbed the nose of one of the animals. Well, and the higher you reached, the faster your desire will be fulfilled. To reach the rooster, by the way, is quite difficult (even with my height in 195 cm). But it is definitely worth trying. Even if it leaves for a while. In general, there will be what to do in Riga.

 • See famous Riga spiers.

In general, the main "height" in the capital of Latvia is only four - the church of St. Jacob, the Church of St. Peter, the Dome Cathedral and the Riga Castle. It is these buildings in Soviet times were the main symbols of Old Latvia. Their images were used almost everywhere. And over time, the panorama of the city crowned with sharp roofs became so popular that other structures were often calculated to the number of Riga spiers.

Today, in addition to the four main buildings, the extended list also includes the spiers of the Riga Academy of Sciences, the Church of St. Magdalene, the Anglican Church of the Holy Redeemer, as well as the subtle needle of Riga Telbashni. What exactly to pay your attention during trips to Latvia - Decide yourself.

Riga Castle

The buildings with four main spiers of Riga can be found at: Herdera Laukums 6 (Dome Cathedral), Skarnu Iela 19 (Church of St. Peter), Jakaba Iela 9 (Church of St. Jacob), Pils Laukums 3 (Riga Castle). The best view of all Riga Spiers opens from the left bank of the Daugava.

 • Look at riga from height.

By the way, in many highways of Riga today are equipped with viewing platforms. But the entrance is in most of them paid. You will be able to close at the Tower of the Cathedral of St. Peter for 7 euros, at the viewing "Stalin High rise" of the Academy of Sciences (pl. Academy, 1) - for 4 euros, and on the site of the Riga television (Zaisala Island) - for 3.70 euros. The last option may seem the most seductive (especially considering the fact that the Riga television branch with a height of 368 meters is officially considered the highest building of the Baltic States). However, I would not advise you to choose it. Hots would be because in this building there are constantly dirty windows.

Academy of Sciences of Latvia and Riga Telbashnya

Instead, it is better to go to the cafe "Panorama", located on the roof of the Galleria Riga shopping center (Dzirnavu Iela, 67) or to the Sky Line Patus Riga Bar at the Latvia Hotel (he is Radisson Blu Hotel). Go here on weekdays can be completely free. And the preserved money is better to spend on coffee. Any cocktails are expensive there (9-12 euros).

Hotel Latvia on Brivibas Ave. View from the cafe panorama

 • Listen to the Melodies of Street Musicians.

I do not know why, but trips to the old world in my mind are always associated with the music of street musicians. A few months ago we listened to a cool street concert during a trip to Warsaw. This time they stumbled upon an equally interesting performance of street musicians in Riga. Labali guys on the tube "Because I" M Happy "Faellla Williams. And in the back background, some small citizen of the EU was danted. In general, it was great.

 • Strengthen the Riga Parks.

Autumn in Latvia is very picturesque. We especially liked the park near the Monument of Freedom (on Brivibas Avenue). Ponds, bridges with locks running under the feet of ducks and a huge amount of yellow, red and orange paints around - looks very beautiful.

 • See Riga eyes of a local resident. After all, someone as not real Riga can show you all the most hidden corners of this city, tell about the legends of the old Riga, show the city "From the inside", as it appears to the usual residents of Latvia. To move away from the traditional excursion format, some time ago on the basis of the Tripse project, a number of unusual copyright tours from "local residents" were created. Today they use stable popularity in Riga. View a complete list of such non-standard excursions. If finance allows, do not miss this opportunity.
 • Visit Riga Quarters with Modern Buildings (Located in the area of Elizabetez streets, Albert, Antonijas and some other adjacent to them).

Latvian Yighdille has long been considered one of the symbols of Riga. Pay attention to these areas. There really is what to see. And in general, trip to Riga - An excellent opportunity to understand a little in the intricacies of architectural styles.

 • Stroll along the banks of Daugava.

Only get dressed first. Autumn weather in Riga - this is some hellish swing! That rain, then the sun, then the fog, then the wind ... First you leave the house and you think: "What I dressed like a cabbage." But after an hour you know what he did right.

National Library of Latvia. Architecture in the style of late "Ababa." There is also some kind of crown on top.

 • Take a picture of the most ugly libraryin the world .

Do you think this is in our Minsk? I hurry you assure: not at all. Compared, with a non-zero and some reason, our "diamond knowledge of the National Little Library of Latvia is simply an architectural masterpiece. In general, do not know what to do in Riga - Go to Daugava. There is always a lot of interesting things.

 • Compare Minsk and Riga Lido.

Another object for comparison is two Lido restaurants located in two capitals. As for me, our Lido, even a little better than Latvian. At least, in Riga Tanya constantly gross that with desserts in this place some strained.

But I liked local national cuisine dishes. But this is probably worth writing as a separate item. Itaaaak ....

 • Try Latvian National Kitchen Dishes.

There is actually a lot of things strange, but at the same time very interesting. Milk soup with fish, manna porridge with a whipped egg, pumpkin compote and many other weird oddities. Although everything is very tasty for calibration. For example, I especially liked the gray peas with a spicent. It looks unpretentious, but actually a delicious thing. Eat and immediately imagine yourself with some Latvian farmer of the Middle Ages. In Lido, this dish cost 1.65 euros. Oh, yes ... In this restaurant, a very tasty beer is boiled (1.95 euros per mug). In short, you will not know what to do in Riga - Go to a tour of local gastronomic institutions. This is another adventure.

 • Pamper a ladyby baking.

Rigane just adore her. Yes, and Thane (our chief specialist in the departure of sweets), she also really liked. At the same time, good baking can be found both in a cafe and in ordinary stores. For example, we liked the shop at the intersection of Tallinas streets and Krishjan Baron. As well as a cafe "Martina". In both places, very cool buns were made (0.3-0.45 euros).

 • Bonus.. If in the Latvian capital you will suddenly be bored - go on a tour of her closest suburbs.

Turaid castle in autumn

In the summer, numerous beach villages of Jurmala can be a good solution. In the autumn (as in our case), Sigulda will be a much more optimal option and located in its surroundings National Park Gauja.

Folding out by the myriads of yellow, red and bard paints at this time of the year, local places are especially beautiful and picturesque. However, see yourself ...

That's all. I hope our article about what to do in Riga It was useful to you. Write comments and share your experiences from your own trips. We will be glad to see you again. Until!

Hello everyone! For the first time B. Riga I recently visited. The goal of our car trip was St. Petersburg. We decided to stay in Riga for one night and finally see it. I immediately note that the route through Lithuania in Riga did not like. Our Kaliningrad roads are better.)))

We arrived in autumn in the evening when it was already dark, settled in three-star hotel A1.. Yes, it is called.

A few words about the hotel. There is no own parking lot on the hotel, but it is quite close to the paid. Inheritance: as if you go to the underground transition, it's not necessary to go for a long time.))) At the reception, we were talked to Russian, quickly issued. Pros: Spacious room on three, comfortable bedrooms, rich breakfast. Minuses: The corridor and the staircase require repair; The staircase with a wide step is pretty long; The elevator is missing; windows and curtains with stains; We had an unsuccessful view from the window to some naked walls; Mad drain tank in the bathroom; Rusted toilet paper holder, dust on the closet. The score on Bucking was 7.8, usually we try to take hotels from 8, but this hotel in the photo and reviews made a favorable impression, in addition, the stop provided for only one night, so we risked. Now I, of course, I understand that I would not return to this hotel.

After adding, we went on foot to walk in the evening Riga. From the hotel to the center was about one and a half kilometers, first of all I was interested Old city. On the way on the lively streets, we met any cute "designer solutions":

The European Old Town is, as always, lined with a paving road, a street of different lengths and widths, a magnificent architecture.

Slowly we got to Town Hall Square. Here are two amazing buildings in the beauty of the structure: House of blackheads (in the photo - right),on the facade of which you can see four sculptures - Neptune, Mercury, Unity and Peace, And the house of Schwab (in the photo - Left).

First you think that this is for people by last name - Chernogolov and what are they famous?))) But the name is not at all from the last name.))) Read if you are interested, quote, I tried to compact the essence as compactly.

The Blackhead House was originally called a new home and was built in 1334. In 1941, he suffered greatly, and in 2001, the Blackhead House was finally rebuilt at the 800th anniversary of Riga.

Initially, this house served as a place of assembly of citizens, and in the XVII century he was given to the Brotherhood of the Blackheads - Corporation of merchants. This fraternity was formed in the XIII century and then it was the name of the Brotherhood of St. George, since the merchants chose to their own saint in the patrons. Later, the patron saint of the fraternity becomes the Holy Mauritius, which, according to the command of the Roman commander, for the spread of Christianity was subjected to cruel torture. However, Mauritius did not refuse faith. The courage of a black warrior and confused merchants to choose his patron. From that moment on, they receive the name of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, and in the emblem of Brotherhood, as his symbol, the Black Head of St. Mauritius appears.

As for the house of Schwab, then ... once this building was not something outstanding and did not particularly decorate the Town Hall Square, however .....))))

In 1842, an unprecedatory house on the Town Hall Square moved to the succeeding Winechoves H.P. Svaby. Soon the building received a well-known name "House Schwab". In 1889, this house, along with wine trading, acquired a merchant Emil Schmidt. He was a very ambitious man and dreamed of joining the Society of Chernogolov. Alas, his dreams were not destined to come true. The merchants did not want to endure Schmidt in their society. Then he chose a peculiar way for revenge))) Cavenly by the House of Schwab, Schmidt ordered the project to restructure a non-sparing building to the famous Riga architect. The cunning plan was that the building repeated the forms of the famous neighbor - the house of blackheads. After reconstruction, the building has become like a single integer with the house of the famous fraternity.

Agree, both buildings are very decorated with a city, and having such a rich history, they actively attract tourists.

Here, on the Town Hall Square, are church of St. Peter -sample of monumental medieval architecture, one of the main and revered attractions of Riga and Riga Town Hall, which is now serving the Riga Duma. However, my photos of these buildings in the dark did not succeed at all, so I will not place them.)))

Having arrived at that evening, we were hungry, we had two institutions in our posts, in which we would like to spend (found reviews on one well-known site for travelers), but this case was not asked. A small closed event took place in the first, we seemed to us that the company was gathered for the game in the mafia. And when we went to the second noted place, we asked if we booked a table))). We did not book and did not know about such a need. And here we, hungry, went where the eyes look. In fact, there are a lot of cafe, and we went in the end in Charlie Pizza. We really liked it, we had a great dinner. There is a large selection of dishes in the menu, and do not think that there is only pizza. The young girl-Latvian took our order in Russian, when she repeated our order, she asked if we would not object if she would repeat it in Latvian, because he understood well, but she was difficult to talk.))) Of course, we were not against it. .))) Prices ... neither cheap nor expensive. Acceptable.

After a late dinner, we went to walk to the hotel.

In the morning they had breakfast, probably, before all and again went to the old town, we needed to be afraid to still silence Riga and continue walking through the old town)))

So, the Old Town, Doma Square.

Dome Cathedral is located on the Domskaya Square - The largest medieval temple of the Baltic countries, the symbol of Riga. The name means - the house of God. Here you can go, watch from the inside, the main attraction of the cathedral is the body. This is the oldest building of Riga. And the Golden Cockerel, decorating the Tower of the Dome Cathedral, is visible from anywhere in the old town of Riga.

From the Domskaya Square, like the rays, the streets of the old city are diverged in different directions, surrounded the square of beautiful buildings with attractive facades. It originates here legendary Street Yauniela (Jauniela). The street is famous for the fact that there were many films on it. In the TV series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson", the street acted as a London Baker Street Street, and in the television series "Seventeen moments of spring" - as a flower street.

From the old town is not so far to urban Park. Here we saw the Golden Autumn in all its glory:

Couples walk here, walk with children, feed clarops. A pleasant place in the center of Riga, where you can relax, admire, think. Rows from the song of one Kaliningrad performer:

Having come across the park in Riga.
References on the main thing
The poet will write a book
To the music of Nirvana ...

With Nirvana, I do not fit this park at all, but every person he causes his emotions.)))

I met in this part of the city and

After walking dining, we went back to Charlie Pizza.)))Well, we liked it there on the day before.))) Additionally, it turned out that in this cafe there are special day-made offer of business lunches. I managed to save and again it was delicious.

Later we went to our car parking, trying to mark beautiful, interesting and distinctive streets:

You know, there are such cities in love at first sight, from the first pharmacy of the air. It is impossible to guess, with what city you will have a relationship of love and complete mutual understanding, and from what faster it will want to leave. I liked Riga - for her houses, cobbled streets, spiers of churches, stories, music and magic atmosphere. And in the end - in the Riga itself I was three times: in the summer, in the fall and winter.

Here you can look at my photos of Summer Riga (about 60 pictures):

Riga in summer

On the New Year's holidays from Tallinn to Riga, with each other, we got on the Eurolines bus. 4.5 hours with coffee tea on board, and you fall into another country. Of course, there are no customs and stops on the border. What rushes into the eyes?! Type and movement on the streets of the city! Such a pleasant eye of Muscovite after slow Tallinn. Feel something warm and native. And in Russian speak absolutely everything. In Tallinn in Russian often does not say young people, the older generation is almost always. If in the Estonian capital to contact people on the street it is worth starting from English, then in Latvian - you should not even think about, speak Russian, and you will understand you.

Riga winter

The city was founded in 1201 by the German Knights-conquerors. With the entry into the Hanseatic Union at the end of the XIII century, the heyday period began in Riga, the city developed rapidly, provided his inhabitants with many freedoms and privileges. A great influence on the city was provided by the German urban culture, which today is evidenced by stone buildings in the old town. In the XVII century, Riga seized Sweden, and from 1721, as a result of the Northern War, Riga and most of Latvia passed into the ownership of the Russian Empire. Emperor Peter I personally participated in the reorganization of the city.

In the first half of the 20th century, the city survived a number of tragic events related to revolutions and world wars, which was reflected in his demographic history. Now the city is multinational.

Riga is a city rich in architectural monuments. The famous "Old Town" with its medieval building is listed on the UNESCO Heritage List.

In the central part of the city, many architectural monuments of the UGEND-style.

Original museums, rich cultural life make Riga in a unique city - "Little Paris" on the shores of the Baltic Sea.

Below are photos of Riga on the days of New Year's holidays (January 2011), and in the fall (November 2010).

Riga Autumn:

Usually in the new city, I first try to climb somewhere higher, in order to consider the neighborhood from there to make a map plan and notice interesting places that could miss when preparing for the trip. In Vilnius, the city is clearly visible with, in Tallinn with, in Helsinki - with. In Riga, something went wrong, and climbing higher to the previous trip failed. This time was lucky more, and I looked at the city at once from two points, and the autumn paints were added by the scenery of contrast.

During a walk through Esplanade, I found me the walled October rain, from which it was necessary to urgently hide somewhere. Suddenly, like a piano in the bushes, the hotel Radison was nearby, located in the former building of Latvia hotels:

Radison today is almost all major European cities, and if McDonalds is the largest network of free toilets, then Radison is the largest network of free sightsets. The networker loves high-rise buildings and often equips a bar or restaurant on the top floor, the entrance is most often free. In Riga, this skyr bar, located on the 26th floor of the building:

From here you can see all Riga to the most before the outskirts:

The only negative is that it is possible to watch and shoot only through glass, an open site, as in the same Tallinn there is no:

Despite the rain and tightening the sky, the view of the central part of the city is chic, the boulevard of freedom with trees in four rows is reminders:

Latvian Cabinet Cabinet occupies a whole quarter, local calls him the "quarter of red roofs", by analogy with the quarter of the red lanterns in Amsterdam, with a hint of who, in their opinion, meets there:

Vent bridge and glass on the left bank of the Daugava:

The view of the old Riga, to the right of the trees, the powder tower looks out, on the left of the stone bridge over Daugava, on the opposite shore - the wave-like building of the National Library:

From the 26th floor of the hotel you can immediately have three main churches of Latvia. The main Protestant Church of the country is the Dome Cathedral, in the background another "Radison", located in the former hotel "Daugava" right on the river bank:

The Cathedral of the Latvian Orthodox Church - the Christ Cathedral, consecrated in 1884:

And finally, the main Catholic Church of Latvia - the Cathedral of St. Jacob. This building of the Catholic Church received only in the 20s of the 20th century, before that of 400 years the Cathedral was Protestant:

Roofs of surrounding houses. Judging by the abundance of pipes and the emerging of them smoke, the city still has furnace heating:

View of the eastern part of the city:

The southern direction is the building of the railway station, the highest construction of the European Union - the 368-meter Riga Tenerbashnya and the only Riga "Stalin's height", in which today is the Academy of Sciences of Latvia:

From it and continue to inspect Riga from the height, but already under a slightly different angle:

The building was built in 1952-1958 as a collective farm house, but after the end of construction, the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR was transferred:

The height of the building is 107 meters, until 1990, the spire decorated five-pointed star, which was dismantled as Latvia realized that he did not see the communist future for himself:

Near the height reminds, straight a copy, only below three times:

This is the main entrance:

The cost of lifting - 5 euros, I go to the elevator:

Elevator Modern Finnish, you need to go to the 15th floor:

And from there two more floors to stare on the stairs on foot:

The site is located at an altitude of 65 meters:

Another 42 meters of buildings inaccessible for ordinary visitors are elevated above it.

Overall lights for aircraft:

Facade design details:

From here it is clearly visible the building "Radison Latvia" with a bar on the top floor, where I shot Riga a couple of hours ago:

The explicit advantage of the area of the Academy of Sciences is the absence of glasses, nothing prevents enjoying the views:

Two main high-altitude dominants of Old Riga - the spiers of the Dome Cathedral and the Church of St. Peter:

Cascade of the semicircles - Pavilions of the Riga Market and the railway bridge of the Daugava Cherry:

The National Library, built in 2014:

Railway Station Building:

Overpass at the entrance to the station:

Stopping public transport, the strip next to the stop laid out a parallery to avoid a holy:

In the foreground - the historic tube of one of the first Riga power plants, left as a decorative element next to the opera house, in the background - pipes of existing enterprises in the industrial complex near the port:

The 205-meter radio lane is visible in the village, located in the village of Ulborka under Riga, from the point of shooting to it exactly eight kilometers:

Riga Telbashnya, built in 1986 on the Ware Island in the middle of Daugava:

At its foot, there is a technical building in which transmitters and auxiliary equipment are located:

Latvian television headquarters is located on the same exhaust island exactly two kilometers north of the television:

Four High Resorts of Riga Left Bank, from left to right - twins Z-Towers, Press House, Sunny Stone Skyscraper - Swedbank Headquarters:

The facade of the abandoned house of print occupied Russian companies:

Lutheran Church of the XIX century on Tornakalnsky cemetery on the left bank of the Daugava:

Not far from her on the same left bank, the Victory Park is located, in which there is a monument to Riga's liberators. The main part of the monument is the 79-meter column, topped with golden stars:

The stone bridge over Daugava is one of the three bridges connecting the center of Riga with Left Bank:

Well, finally, ordinary residential buildings and courtyards:

This, apparently, one of the hundred in the garage cooperative:

Last view of the autumn Riga:

The area in which the building of the Academy of Sciences is located, is called the Moscow suburb or the German manner - Moscow Forestadt. A very cereal place, let's tell about it in more detail in
