How to make a turntable. Rotary table. Worktop project with a rotating center

Do-it-yourself cake turntable is needed not only for real confectioners. This is a necessary item for those who cook for pleasure. Housewives who bake mastic-coated cakes cannot do without such a design. The main purpose of a turntable is to facilitate the process of decorating a cake. That is, you do not have to beat around and around the finished product, it will be enough just to decorate a rotating cake. Baking spins around its axis, and you only need to have time to decorate it.

How to make a turntable? To get started, prepare all the necessary materials. You will need two bearings, which are available from auto parts stores.

Please note that there are double, compressed bearings. The second option is preferable because you will have to tinker less.

The turntable also needs a wooden plate. You can stock up on the door from the kitchen set. In addition, you will need hard nails, self-tapping screws, plastic tubes, a metal circle, thin plastic, plywood.

Work process

Scheme Drawing

Making a turntable with your own hands is quite simple. First of all, you will need to draw a quality drawing. After that, we begin to work according to the following scheme. If you have two bearings, and not one pressed one, then we drive an element of a smaller diameter into a larger one using nails. It is necessary to cut out two circles with a diameter of 20 cm in a wooden plate. In one of the circles, a hole is cut in the middle into which the bearing is hammered. In this case, the two parts are twisted and fixed with screws. The bearing is placed in the center.

The do-it-yourself table is equipped with plastic tubes. The tube should connect the upper and lower parts. Consider this point when you make a drawing for the turntable. In this case, the tube must fit exactly into the bearing. The ideal length is 15 cm. Such a tube will not be too short or long, so you do not have to bend down to decorate the product.

The top is made of metal. In order for it to spin, pay special attention to its diameter. On average, the diameter of a metal circle should range from 30 to 40 cm. If you have the opportunity to weld the elements, it will only be wonderful. For those who are deprived of such an opportunity, cold welding was invented, which looks like plasticine. A cake turntable also requires circles cut out of plywood. The rotating part is mounted on the pipe, and the elements are fastened with self-tapping screws.

If the purchase is not planned in the near future, then an experienced craftsman can assemble it on his own.

If you want the cake to be accessible to you from all sides at the same time, and at the same time you would not have to run around it, be sure to consider having a rotating stand.

What is a turntable for cakes? This product is made up of:

  • round work surface;
  • – grounds;
  • rollers, rubber bands

Thanks to its design, the table easily rotates around its axis, and provides convenient access to the confectionery product. With such a supply, you can create elegant and original decors in the most convenient way and form decorations of any complexity. At the same time, you don’t have to worry at all that your masterpiece will move out, get damaged or fall to the floor.

A turntable for cakes can be either purchased ready-made or made on your own. Homemade design has a lot of advantages. First, you can make a product that will fully meet your requirements and preferences. Secondly, you yourself will be able to create a well-thought-out drawing of the product, select the materials for its manufacture and think over the most optimal dimensions. In addition, a home-made design will come out much cheaper than a purchased one.

materials

A swivel table can be made from any improvised materials:

Each individual option has its own advantages. The tree is environmentally friendly, safe, pleasant to the touch texture. MDF and plywood are easy to process. In addition, this material has a low cost.

But chipboard is inexpensive, and its appearance is attractive, and it is pleasant to work with it.

Advice: in order to save consumables, you can use the door from an old kitchen set to make a countertop.

Tools

Having decided to make a DIY turntable for cakes, prepare the following: tools and materials:

Important: bearings are double and pressed. The second option is preferable when assembling a rotating cake stand, as they are easier to install.

How to make a turntable?

Making a turntable is quite easy and simple. First you need to make a well-thought-out sketch. On this drawing, indicate the design of the product, its exact dimensions and materials of manufacture. With such a scheme at hand, you can easily assemble a table the first time and without errors.

The manufacturing process of the turntable is carried out in the following sequence:

That's the whole simple process of manufacturing a rotating structure.

Advice: to give the product a decorative appearance, it can be pasted over with thin plastic.

Also, the product can be decorated with a self-adhesive film. It just sticks on and is easy to wash.

By choosing different materials and getting creative, you can get very different tables.

Do-it-yourself rotary positioning table.

Another very useful tool has been added to our workshop with an unusual structure that we have made this time. This rotary positioning table can be useful for a wide range of structural fabrication applications.

This table is able to rotate a metal plate from 0 to 100 degrees with the rotation speed already adjusted. This may seem rather simple and useless, but imagine having to control a stable weld while the part is rotating at a gradual speed. I can assure you that the welding will be done automatically and much more evenly. It would be equally easy if we placed the router in a stable place by rotating a piece of wood, then we would immediately get a cut wooden circle of perfect shape. In addition, it would also be easy if we had a plasma cutter while the metal plate was being rotated. These are just a few of the many table-specific utilities that use your imagination, and their functions are countless.

Step 2: Gearbox - DC Motor

It all started when a friend gave us a gearbox that can do 10 spins in just one. We then found a DC motor from an old trainer and connected it to the gearbox. Therefore, a motor using a speed controller could spin at 0-3000 revolutions, so when it was coupled to the gearbox, it would spin at 0-300 revolutions. From the gearbox, we managed to make a 65 cm axle, on which a metal plate was applied, and this is also the surface of our project. This axle is also supported by two more bearings for even more endurance. Since the parts already mentioned were connected, they were placed on a 40mm thick axis that can rotate all parts made from 0 degrees to 100 degrees. Using a crank and a threaded shaft (screw threads start from one side of the shaft and reach the other side), we have created a system that, when the crank is rotated, rotates the entire system, and as a result we get the slope that we need to work with. All this moves on a metal base, which was made of square pipes with dimensions of 50 mm x 50 mm x 2 mm. On this metal base we have also placed a mechanism that plays a role, when the position is chosen and it is suitable for work and screwing, the table is stabilized completely and securely.

Step 3: Design

One of the advantages of our own table design is that when it is placed in a horizontal position at 0 degrees, there are two surfaces to work on, one on the front side and one on the back side of the table. In particular, on the back side you can have a chuck and be able to place smaller objects, and on the front side, where there is more surface to work with, you can place larger objects.
The motor that has been placed to move the table left and right uses two contactors that are activated by pressing two steppers. The steppers are made of sheet aluminum and their lids are made of sheet metal. In addition, above the steppers is a board on which the switches are located. One of the two switches is for an emergency in case of a problem and can be pressed to disable any function in progress. While the other must activate the entire mechanism and the potentiometer located next to it, it regulates the speed of rotation of the metal surface of the work. As for the future use of the structure, various bases can be placed on which many auxiliary tools and machines can be placed, which increases the potential use of our structure. Final, Thus, we managed to realize another project of the team to make it extreme with great success. Thus, our workshop is one step ahead, being more complete.

Step 4: Video

We believe that a particular structure was worth our time and effort, not only for the satisfaction gained in its creation, but also for the great utility of the particular tool.

I have had a large round table in my living room for many years. Friends and relatives often gather for a festive feast. During the meal, there are requests to pass this or that dish. This causes unnecessary fuss and certain inconveniences. After browsing the Internet for a lot of information about different models of furniture, I decided to make a swivel table with my own hands, the drawings of which I made myself. Having assembled a simple design, I immediately got rid of the above problems. In this article I will talk about how to make a round table with a spinning middle with your own hands.

Worktop project with a rotating center

It was important for me to create a stand in the form of a turntable. Its scheme should be simple and not cause time and financial costs. The main idea lies in the design of the rotation unit of the table plane. I used a hinged support for furniture. I decided to make a carrier plane from two sheets of fiberboard and chipboard. I don't use wood. Before making a table with a spinning center with my own hands, I prepared tools and materials.

Tools

After evaluating the volume and types of work, I assembled the tools in accordance with the following list:

  • electric jigsaw, with which I cut circles from fiberboard and chipboard;
  • I will need an electric drill to drill holes for connecting furniture parts;
  • screwdriver for fastening screws;
  • air compressor with a gun for blowing holes and surfaces to be treated;
  • hammer;
  • iron;
  • wrench;
  • improvised tool (pliers, screwdriver, metal ruler, tape measure, knife, pencil).

materials

To make a round table with a rotating middle with my own hands, I picked up the materials needed for this. The list included the following:

  • fiberboard sheet - 600 x 600 mm;
  • piece of chipboard - 600 x 600 x 20 mm, I select according to the color of the main countertop;
  • roller support;
  • piece of timber 50 x 50 x 500 mm;
  • hardware - 4 screws 6 x 20 mm, two bolts 10 x 30 mm with washers and nuts, one screw 8 x 70 mm;
  • paper sheet;
  • liquid nails - tube (185 g);
  • end adhesive furniture tape 25 mm wide;
  • sandpaper.

To make it clearer to the reader how to make a rotating table, I have compiled instructions for assembling this device.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling a turntable with your own hands

I set out all my actions in paragraphs in the following order.

  1. I determine the size of the rotating plane 600 mm. Since the diameter of the main table is 1300 mm, the table will not interfere with the plates around it.
  2. I fix a sheet of whatman paper on the board with push pins.
  3. Using drawing tools, I draw a circle of 600 mm on paper. I carefully cut out the table layout with scissors.
  4. Having attached a drawing paper to a sheet of fiberboard, I circle it with a pencil. Using a jigsaw, I cut out the lining under the countertop.
  5. I perform the same actions with a piece of chipboard.
  6. Using pliers and a screwdriver, I remove the plastic roller from the metal hinge.

  1. In the middle of the bar I make side cutouts for a tight installation of the support.
  2. Having installed the hinge strictly in the center of the beam, I drill a hole through the openings in the metal from the side.

  1. I apply the hinge platform to the center of the fiberboard, mark the attachment points with a pencil. The hinged support will allow the table to rotate and turn in the right direction at any time.
  2. In fiberboard, I drill 4 holes of 6 mm according to the marking with a drill.
  3. I thread the screws through the holes in the sheet and support. From the side of the platform I put washers and tighten the nuts.

  1. I cover the screw heads with machine oil.
  2. I apply a chipboard circle so that the outer boundaries of the two circles coincide.
  3. According to the marks obtained, I make small indentations in the chipboard with a drill. They will allow the screw heads to not interfere with the snug fit of the two parts of the rotating tabletop.
  4. I apply a layer of liquid nails on the surface of the chipboard and connect both parts of the table. Separating them, I stand 3 minutes. Then I finally connect the parts, loading from above with improvised heavy objects.
  5. I process the side edges of the circles with sandpaper.
  6. I place the support bar in the center of the round table. I make marks at a distance of 30 mm from the edges of the bar.
  7. Through the marks I drill through the timber and the tabletop.
  8. I put in two bolts. From the bottom of the countertop I fix the bolts with nuts and washers.
  9. On a fixed support bar I put on a hinge with a table top. I thread a bolt through a pre-drilled horizontal hole and tighten it with a nut and washer.
  10. On the end of the circle I stick the tape with an iron. I cut off the protruding part of the edge with a knife. The table is ready.

This instruction makes it possible to understand how to make a table with a rotating middle with your own hands without much hassle and at minimal cost.

Labor costs and cost of making a table with a rotating center with your own hands

At the end of the work, it was interesting for me to calculate how much the installation of the rotary table cost. Money was spent:

  • Fiberboard (0.5 m2) - 50 rubles;
  • Chipboard (0.5 m2) - 100 rubles;
  • liquid nails "Installation" (tube 185 g) - 160 rubles;
  • articulated leg for a chair - 70 rubles;
  • paper sheet (1 sheet) - 20 rubles.

Total: 400 rubles.

I bought sheet material in a furniture workshop as cutting waste. I took a piece of timber, hardware, adhesive furniture tape from my stocks.

As for labor costs, the work took me no more than 8 hours.

DIY spinning table

After I made a turntable with my own hands, I came across drawings for a simpler project for making a turntable. It is possible to use a pivot support with a vertical axis instead of a platform. You need to do this in the following way:

  • a hole is drilled in the center of the round table with a drill,
  • insert an axle with a plastic insert into it.

The table is assembled and fastened to the rotating support in the same way as described above. What is attractive about this method of arranging a round table with a rotating middle with your own hands? The fact that the table can be removed at any time, and the hole in the center of the table can be closed with a plastic plug.

It would seem that the catastrophic lack of space for free movement is a common “disease” only for apartments and private houses of the old Soviet layout, when the number of square meters of living space per person was strictly regulated or the total area of a private house was limited. However, how then to explain the popularity of multifunctional or folding furniture all over the world? The answer is simple: a person tends to be rational about the world around him, including the space of his home. Folding, resizable tables and chairs are a prime example of this.

A few reasons to make a folding table with your own hands

Today, there are many different designs of folding tables on the market, but there is nothing complicated in making them yourself. In addition, in some cases, making a folding table with your own hands is much more profitable and, again, more rational:

  • The size of the table can be varied based on the size of a particular room;
  • the design of the table can be chosen depending on the ease of use, at will;
  • the design of the table is chosen in accordance with the interior of the room, so it does not “stand out” from the general style of the room.

An important factor is the exclusivity of hand-made furniture.

A folding table in the kitchen is the best option in the conditions of small apartments, when all family members can sit behind it (when folded). In the unfolded version, this is a full-fledged banquet table, at which twice (or even three times) more people can fit.

To make a folding dining table, it is not at all necessary to go to cabinetmaking courses: you can simply use our advice, dream up a little (in terms of design, of course), and think a little more - already on the drawings of the folding table that you need.

Materials, fixtures, fittings and tools

For work, in addition to the material (it is better to use chipboard for the table top and table box elements), you will need:

  • Tools - a jigsaw (or a hand-held electric end saw), an electric drill, a screwdriver or a curly screwdriver, a key for confirmations.
  • Fasteners and accessories - their number, types and sizes depend on the intended design of the table, so we will talk about them separately in each case.

Case 1. Making a folding table - a coffee table transformer

If you decide to make a folding table - a transformer for the living room, then you will need to purchase special transformation mechanisms (Fig. 1 or 2). Such a table will perfectly disguise itself as a regular coffee table, until guests descend on you and you need to set the table for several people in the living room.

Tables-transformers can have different dimensions.

Fig.1 Single transformation mechanism

Fig.2 Double transformation mechanism

Making such a table is quite simple, subject to strict adherence to the instructions and procedures.

First of all, carefully consider the proposed drawing of a folding table (Fig. 3), specify its dimensions in relation to your requests and, if necessary, make changes to your drawing.

Fig.3 Drawing of a folding table

We will need:

  1. LDS plate (25mm):
  • For countertops - panels 750x90 mm (2 pcs.);
  • in case of choosing a double mechanism (fig. 2) - one more panel with a size of 350x720mm for an auxiliary tabletop;
  • in the case of choosing a mechanism from Fig. 1 - a connecting panel, the length of which is equal to the distance between the platforms of the mechanisms, the width is equal to the length of the platform of the mechanism.

For the frame:

  • 2 panels 730x460mm (end sides of the table),
  • 2 panels 730x150mm (side parts of the box for the mechanism, which serve as a strapping for the tabletop);
  • 2 panels measuring 680x730mm (the bottom of the box for the mechanism) and 730x730mm (shelf for magazines "g").
  • Mechanism for transformation: from Fig. 1 - 4 pcs. (2 right and 2 left), from Fig. 2 - 2 pcs.
  • Fasteners - confirmations 8-10 pcs., furniture corners 4 pcs., ombre end hinges 2 pcs. (see fig. 4), self-tapping screws for fastening the tabletop to the platforms of the transformation mechanism.
  • Fig.4 Furniture corners

    Important! All parts must be cut out very accurately, before final assembly it is best to “bait” the main components of the table and, if necessary, adjust to fit.

    Assembly of a folding table-transformer

    Process the end parts of all cut parts with sandpaper (skins), paste over with a melamine edge to match the chipboard color.

    Fig.5 Assembling the base of the transformer table

    If you were careful and accurate when marking out the parts and sawing them, then assembling the table will not take much time and effort.

    As shown in fig. 3 and 5, first, with the help of confirmations, we connect the bottom and sides of the box for the mechanism (they are marked with crosses on the part b of Figure No. 5).

    With the help of the same confirmations, at the desired height from the floor, we fasten the shelf for magazines with the end parts of the table - 2-3 fasteners per side.

    We attach the box to the end legs with the help of furniture corners, for greater reliability we screw another 1-2 confirmations into the middle of the line of contact between the bottom of the box and the end plate of the table.

    • With the help of card loops we assemble the countertop;
    • In the drawer of the table we attach the mechanism for transformation.

    We attach the tabletop to the platforms of the mechanism:

    If the mechanism is single, then we attach the lower part of the tabletop to one pair, and fasten the second pair to each other with a connecting panel (on the underside of the platforms).

    If the mechanism is double, then we attach the tabletop to the large arms of the mechanism, and the supporting tabletop to the smaller ones.

    The table is ready. It remains only to mask the confirmers' heads with plugs and wait for the guests!

    Case 2. Making a turntable folding table

    If you are more interested in the idea of a swivel folding table, then you will need special fasteners for rotation (you can use the swivel mechanism for TV), but if the table is not laid out daily, you can do without it.

    Fig.6 Rotary folding table

    To make a folding dining table with a swivel top, we need laminated chipboard (25 mm thick) in the following dimensions:

    • 770x500 mm - 2 pcs. (for a folding tabletop);
    • 400x670 mm - for a false tabletop (1 pc.);
    • 645x100 mm and 375x100 mm - 2 pcs. (for tying table legs);
    • 4 bars 40x40mm or 60x60mm, 700-750 mm long each (for legs).

    In addition, you will need 8 furniture corners for attaching the legs, 8 confirmations for the strapping box, ombre hinges for the tabletop, a swivel mechanism for TV, 4-6 wooden dowels.

    Fig. 7 Scheme of turning the tabletop

    It should be said that one of the most popular transformers is a book table, the drawings of which you can also find on our website.
