Today we will tell you how to make a drill-attachment for a screwdriver from scrap materials with your own hands.

Some small and delicate projects cannot be done with a boring machine, but not everyone can afford to buy it for the amateur business.

In this article I will tell you how to make a drill-attachment for a screwdriver from scrap materials and I will be pleased if my idea is useful to you.

And so, let's start with the most complex mechanism of this device, namely the tip.

For it we need two bearings from the spinning coils. I saw similar bearings on sale, in a store. I did not buy them, since I had broken coils in stock.

And as a shaft for the bearings, I used a brass valve from the chamber of the cargo wheel.

Cutting off the excess

we clamp the future shaft in the chuck of the screwdriver and rotate it, with a file we bore the journals for the bearings.


After that, you need to make a crimping mechanism for nozzles or a collet. To do this, I decided to drill a screw suitable for a nut by 10. Fixing the screw itself in the screwdriver's chuck, and setting it to 2.5 mm in another, or in a vice rotating the screw, drill it along the axis.



Cut off the screw head and carefully, in the center, make four axial slots 4-5 mm deep, thereby dividing the end of the part into four parts. If you allow the slightest displacement when making slots or a hole, then the clamping jaws will turn out to be different, in the future the attachments will vibrate and the use of such a drill will be difficult.


Having installed the workpiece with the shank in the screwdriver chuck, we sharpen the head under the cone with a file.

Then we unfold the workpiece, fixing the 12 mm of the rod with the conical part in the chuck of the screwdriver, grind the thread of the shank, thereby reducing the diameter of the part to 5 mm. And on the shaft itself, we increase the inner diameter with a 5 mm drill, deepening it by about 2 centimeters.


We insert the part into the shaft and drill it with a 2.5 mm drill, pin the hole with a nail suitable for the diameter of the hole, fastening them together.

For the second part of the crimping mechanism, I decided to use a steel cap or a blind nut for 10. I could not find such a nut for sale and I had to unscrew it from a metal profile.

To make a hole in the nut exactly in the center, I drilled another screw and tightly tightened the screw in the nut, drilled a hole in it with the same drill.

Then, having measured the end of the crimping mechanism, with a 4 mm drill increased the hole in the nut and with a 5 mm drill from the inside removed the chamfer.

For the flexible hose of the bur machine, I used a brake cable. Rotating in the jacket, the cable will transfer the kinetic energy of the screwdriver to the tip.
By the way, the nut from the brake system is not suitable for the collet head. The walls of the cap are too thin for this.

Now you need to connect the cable to the shaft. For this purpose, I drilled another screw, only this time with a smaller diameter and longer.

Having measured the thickness of the cable, drill the screw with a 1.5 mm drill and cut off the cap and reduce the diameter of the rod in the same way.

Then we solder the cable into the rod about half its depth. For soldering, I used soldering acid and tin solder. We heat the rod or on a gas stove and a cable.

We mark the drilling point and make holes on the shaft, and then in the rod by installing it into the shaft. After that, we pin, fastening the parts together.

A reinforced plastic pipe 20 fits perfectly for the body. The length of the pipe is the distance from one to the second edge of the bearing.

After slightly chamfering the plastic tube, press in the rear bearing. And then, passing a cable through it and installing the shaft into it, we press in the front one until the backlash between the shaft and the bearings disappears.

Now you need to attach the cable jacket to the handpiece body. To do this, we cut off a plastic tube 2 centimeters long and make a core for it from a wooden block. Having made a blank with a diameter slightly larger than the inner diameter of the tube and about 1.5 centimeters long, we press it into the tube.

In the center of the core we drill a hole with a slightly smaller diameter of the sleeve of the cable jacket and fix it in it.

Having folded both parts of the case, we mark the places for their fastening to each other. At the marks, we drill holes with a 1.5 mm drill, about 5 mm deep and from a nail of a suitable diameter, we make a fastening pin about 1 cm long.

Having inserted the pin into one of the holes, we connect both parts, mark on the back of the case and do the same operation for the second attachment.

Having lubricated the bearings and the cable, we finally fasten both parts of the housing.

I completely forgot about the shaft stopper hole, without it it will be impossible to fix the nozzles.

With a 2.5 drill, we drill the body, and then the shaft. After that, I had to knock out the bearings, clean them of chips and repeat the assembly operation. Luckily it didn't take more than five minutes.

Cut off the excess length from the back of the cable. So that the end of the cable does not get shaggy, we solder it before cutting.

To avoid bending and damage to the cable, we assemble the frame for the screwdriver.


Well, for control, we make a simple pedal.

Of course, it was possible to connect the pedal to the start button, but my screwdriver is not a cordless one and therefore I decided that it would be easier for me to make a pedal with an outlet. And on the screwdriver itself, I simply fixed the button.

If anyone has an electric motor lying around, then of course you can make a full-fledged boron machine.

Now you need to make two clamps of textolite, which will perform the function of fixing the drilling head of the machine. To achieve maximum alignment of all the holes on the clamps, it is better to process them together, in one set. Then it will be possible to avoid distortions.

Bushings with an internal thread are used as limiting struts. They must be the same size, corresponding to the distance between the clamps. After that, another clamp is made of PCB and two bosses of caprolon. They are drilled off-center to form two eccentric bushings. The clamp is installed on the bar and the backlash is selected with the help of eccentrics. After that, a wooden lever is installed on a spring so that the drilling head returns to its original position. To supply power, you must use a transformer with a capacity of more than 150 watts and an output voltage similar to the used screwdriver. After that, you need to put a diode bridge and a capacitor, install the drilling head on the bed.

Manual router from a screwdriver: step by step instructions

It can be converted into a hand router. You do not need to purchase expensive materials for this. Everything you need can be found in the workshop or garage almost under your feet. To equip a hand router from a screwdriver, you will need pieces of thick plywood or chipboard, a clamp for attaching a tool, fasteners in the form of bolts and self-tapping screws, a locksmith's tool and a feather drill for wood. In the latter case, you can use a drill bit.

Assembling a homemade router is pretty easy. This requires:

  • From the pieces of the selected material, cut out the base, the vertical stand, on which the screwdriver, the stop and the kerchief will be fixed with the help of the clamp, to give the structure rigidity. The dimensions of the parts are chosen arbitrarily, in relation to the dimensions of the power tool.
  • Drill a Ø 40 mm hole in the base using a feather drill for free access of the cutting tool to the processing area.
  • Make a clamp to the diameter of the hand tool.
  • Fix the screwdriver on a vertical stand with a clamp so that its cartridge is at a distance of several millimeters from the base.
  • Install stiffener.
  • Fix the screwdriver on the vertical stand with a stop.

The screwdriver router is ready to use. Such a machine will not be able to become a full-fledged replacement for a hand-held milling cutter due to its low power and low spindle speed, but it will solve the issue of milling small parts in a home workshop.

The main functional purpose of the screwdriver is the installation and dismantling of threaded fasteners. If necessary, some models allow drilling holes in different materials.

The structure of the tool includes a clutch that regulates the amount of torque, or as it is also called, a ratchet. This assembly ensures that work is performed without breaking the splines on the heads of the fasteners. By setting the regulator to a certain position, physically it will no longer be possible to apply more force - the cartridge in which the bit is clamped will simply scroll.

Another characteristic difference is the presence of a forced braking system for the spindle. The operation of this system is manifested in the almost instantaneous cessation of rotation of the tool when the power supply is cut off.

Characteristics that affect the ability of the tool to tighten self-tapping screws or screws of a certain length and diameter, as well as the ability to drill holes of the required diameter and depth:

  • torque;
  • number of revolutions per minute.

To work with fasteners, a torque of 10 Nm and a number of revolutions of 500 rpm are sufficient. To make holes, these parameters should already have more significant values: 30-60 Nm and 1200-1300 rpm.

An electric drill is a fairly powerful tool, the main function of which is to make holes in materials of varying hardness. In this case, the torque from the motor shaft is directly transmitted to the working element - the drill.

It is very easy to turn the most ordinary screwdriver into a drill. The design of the chuck allows for a fairly reliable fixation of drills with a cylindrical shank. It is enough to insert the drill into the chuck of the tool and you can start working.

However, it must be understood that the structural strength is not designed for making holes, especially in hard wood, metal or concrete. When significant axial loads are applied, there will be a high probability of failure of the planetary gearbox, which transmits torque from the engine to the working element or the torque regulator clutch.

In order to be able to combine in the body of one tool the function of tightening screws and drilling holes, the following conditions must be met:

  • the minimum required values ​​of the torque and the number of revolutions per minute must be ensured;
  • the battery must have the necessary capacity to make a reasonable number of holes of the required diameter and depth without recharging.

Tools with similar parameters are already specialized and are called a drill-screwdriver.

The required number of holes can be made in several ways:

  • the use of two batteries with an alternating mode of their operation (one is working, the other is charging);
  • the use of batteries with a larger capacity and, accordingly, a large service life;
  • use as a power source of the electrical network.

The functional range of operations that can be performed with such a power tool extends to drilling holes not only in wood and materials like gypsum, but also in brick and concrete. This affects the area typical of the hammer drill.

It is safe to say that the drill driver is a versatile tool for performing repair and decoration works in everyday life.

In cases where the purchase of an expensive powerful professional tool is not affordable or financially unreasonable, you can try to convert a household screwdriver into a drill.

Since changing the operating parameters of the torque and the number of revolutions is very problematic and most often does not justify itself, the alteration in the overwhelming majority of cases comes down to changing the method of power supply. That is, replacing the batteries with a stationary mains supply.

The task of connecting to the network will be reduced to converting the voltage from 220V to 12V or 24V.

A power supply unit from a computer or laptop with the appropriate parameters will successfully cope with it.

The power supply is connected to a household electrical outlet with a standard cable. Above the connection of the screwdriver and the power supply, you will have to work a little with a soldering iron.

First, the battery is removed from the screwdriver. The IDE ATA Molex power connector is then secured to the case. Unsoldering is carried out, connecting the connector contacts to the contacts to which the power supply was previously connected.

It is also necessary to make an adapter cable connecting the power supply and the mounted connector. The starting material for the manufacture of the adapter is a two-wire electrical wire. Mating IDE ATA Molex power connectors are soldered to the ends of the wire.

In the case of using a laptop power supply, you can use two mounting options:

  • a socket connector is displayed on the screwdriver body, suitable for a standard laptop power cord;
  • the IDE ATA Molex power connector is brought to the case, and the mating connector is soldered to the power cord.

The universal power connection option, which allows the use of any power sources, provides for the manufacture of a universal adapter cable.

The design of the cable allows you to connect it to a screwdriver using a computer power connector to a connection point previously drawn on the case. On the other hand, the cable is supplied with several parallel-connected connectors.

Of the most common connectors, it is worth mentioning:

  • mating computer power connector IDE ATA;
  • "Crocodiles" - to connect to the terminals of a powerful battery;
  • adapter for connection to the car power supply system.

With all the variety of methods that allow you to use a screwdriver as a drill, you should always remember that the drilling function in it is just an auxiliary function. No matter how great the temptation is to use the resulting conversion as a full-fledged drill or, moreover, a punch, you should not do this.

The screwdriver is widely used in various fields of activity to work with various types of fasteners: self-tapping screws, screws, bolts and nuts, furniture confirmations, screws and others. Assembling a hand-held camping power generator and a homemade wind generator

It will not be difficult to make a home-made generator from battery models of the tool, which will give out electricity when the handle is rotated by hand. Such a device will come in handy in field conditions. To make a dynamo machine, you do not need to radically modify the product. Everything necessary to create a marching generator is already in the design of the device; only minor modifications will be needed.

With the help of the created equipment, it will be possible to charge 6 or 12 V batteries.

A power tool is suitable for alteration with an operating voltage of 18V and above... The modification is carried out in the following way:

  • disassemble the electric screwdriver;
  • carefully solder the electronic board;
  • instead of batteries, they put a diode bridge suitable in terms of parameters (dimensions, technical characteristics) inside the battery case;

  • a comfortable handle with a handle is made;
  • the end without the handle is fixed in the chuck.

The final design after the performed manipulations will look something like the photo below.

The diode bridge is necessary so that the generator handle can be turned in any direction. Instead of the handle, you can insert a nozzle with blades. Then you get a simple wind generator.

Wind power generator, also made in another way, in the form of a weather vane. In this case, they do the following with a battery device:

  • disassemble the screwdriver;
  • take out the electric motor by disconnecting its contacts;
  • remove the cartridge with a gearbox (rotor part);

  • an electric motor shaft is inserted into the chuck, clamping it;
  • a round metal plate about 1 mm thick is bolted to the gear wheel of the reducer, which will serve as the basis for fixing the blades made, for example, of plastic pipes;
  • a clamp with a collar is put on the shaft between the chuck and the gear;

  • cut a rectangular base from plywood or thin metal;
  • using a clamp with a clamp, an engine with a chuck is attached to it, drilling holes for fastening in the right places;

  • make a casing to protect the wind generator (from precipitation, dust and other unforeseen influences), for example, from under a coffee can;
  • insert the base with the motor and the cartridge inside, securing the elements with glue, and the cover with a sealant;

  • make blades by attaching them to the round plate of the unit;
  • a weather vane is made;
  • an assembled generator is mounted on one of its ends;

  • connect the wiring to the motor outputs;
  • check the output voltage with a multimeter by rotating the blades by hand.

There are many options for wind generators. Even the entire screwdriver is attached to the support, providing it with a nozzle with blades.

Alteration of a screwdriver into a grinder

If the angle grinder is broken or is missing at all, then it can be temporarily replaced with a cordless or mains electric screwdriver. In this case, there are various options for redoing. The easiest way is to use ready-made or homemade nozzles or adapters. An example of an adapter is shown in the photo below. One end of it is fixed in the chuck, and the disk clings to the other.

Another option that allows you to convert a drill-screwdriver into a grinder is to use a special type of attachment, equipped with a gearbox... When implementing the method, the power tool is disassembled, its gearbox is dismantled, and a nozzle is installed instead. After transformations, you will get a tool similar in appearance to an angle grinder.

It should be borne in mind that such a special attachment is expensive and the modification work takes a lot of time.

Homemade nozzles are made from studs of a suitable diameter, nuts and washers. They are even used with cordless electric screwdrivers.

The efficiency of homemade products is much lower than that of factory grinders. This is due to the large difference in the rotation speeds of the attachments: about 3000 rpm for a screwdriver versus about 11000 rpm for an angle grinder. An insignificant amount of power together with a low speed significantly limit the functionality of the device made.

The devices made should be used only in emergency situations. Because of reverse capabilities on the tool being converted, it is necessary to observe the direction of rotation of the disc so as not to injure.

Converting a screwdriver into a trimmer or lawn mower

To make an electric braid with your own hands, you will need the following parts and materials:

  • a piece of plastic pipe about 2 m long;
  • soldering iron with soldering kit;
  • fasteners: self-tapping screws, bolts with nuts;
  • 45 degree plastic corner;
  • pipe plug;
  • 12 V motor from an electric screwdriver and a rechargeable battery from it;
  • the wire;
  • adapter from 40 to 50 mm for plastic pipes;
  • power button;
  • plastic bucket;
  • contact clips (crocodiles) - 2 pcs;
  • blades from office knives.

The work uses a pipe and a corner to it with a diameter of 40 mm.

The alteration process is carried out as follows:

  • having disassembled the electric screwdriver, they take out the motor;
  • attach it to the plug, having previously marked and drilled the landing holes in it;

  • attach the electric motor with 2 screws;

  • solder the output to the motor;

  • install an electric motor by pushing its wiring into the pipe;

  • mark the location of the future switch with a marker on the tube;

  • a hole is drilled;

  • connect to the wiring switch, mount it;

  • contact clamps are connected to the ends of the outgoing wires for quick connection to the battery;

  • a battery holder is made from the adapter;

  • connect the drive, connect the adapter to the tube;

  • make knives from blades;

  • using a conventional clamp for terminals, the nozzle is connected to the motor shaft;

  • a protective casing is made from a plastic bucket;

  • glue the part to the pipe;

  • check the performance of the structure.


The created device will only allow mowing grass cover with soft stems. There are many different options for lawn mowers based on network models of drills and screwdrivers. The photos below show two homemade products.

First, a base is created from metal, plywood or other materials, to which the wheels are then attached, as well as the control handle. The electric screwdriver is fixed with clamps or to the rack. A cutting attachment is inserted into the chuck. To protect the feet from flying grass, a shroud is attached to the back of the base. Power is made through a button or directly from the network.

To assemble a sufficiently functional lawn mower, you need to take a drill driver from 0.5 kW of power.

A cordless or networked model of an electric screwdriver can be turned into an engraver, which is also called a dremel, drill, mini-drill, or straight grinder. For this, it is quite simple buy a nozzle in the store and carve any bit for it.

A homemade cartridge will allow you to use a variety of equipment designed for dremels.

Making a garden shredder

The garden shredder for grass and thin twigs (less than 1 cm thick) can be made on the basis of a cordless drill / screwdriver.

Create an aggregate like this:

  • choose a suitable container, for example, zinc boil;
  • a hole is drilled in the center of the bottom for the shaft, on which a knife or several blades will be fixed;
  • make a wooden or metal frame for installing the container or put it on the edge of the table;
  • a drill-screwdriver is attached to the frame or bottom of the boil, which is equipped with knives;
  • mount the on / off button;
  • make a slot on the side in the container - cut out a rectangle in front of the bottom 10 by 20 cm;
  • a sleeve is made of tin for ejection of crushed plants;
  • attach it to the container;
  • check the performance of the unit.

Knives are easiest to make from hacksaw blades... They need to be installed with sharpening down. In this case, you can make several options for blades for different herbs. If you make a nozzle in the form of knives for a drill-screwdriver, then the grass can simply be chopped in a bucket or other suitable container.
