What is a Babbington burner

The design of a liquid-fired Babbington burner is simple enough to be DIY in a home workshop. The operating burner has the following main assemblies and parts:

  • container with mining;
  • fuel line;
  • fuel pump; included in the rupture of the fuel line;
  • hemisphere with a small diameter hole;
  • an air nozzle exiting this hole;
  • dripping fuel pan.

The fuel line ends at a certain height above the hemisphere, mining flows down it and evaporates, the vapors are drawn into the air stream, forming a fuel mixture. The fuel that did not have time to evaporate falls into the sump, and from it through the pipe system back into the fuel tank.

Despite the seeming simplicity of the device, for its effective and, most importantly, safe operation, it is required to accurately manufacture the main parts and correctly position them relative to each other. Therefore, it is better to download ready-made drawings of the Babington burner and follow the dimensions indicated in them.

Principle of operation

In most known oil burners, the oil / air mixture is fed through a pressure orifice. In contrast, in the Babington system, oil is supplied by a low-pressure pump and flows freely over a surface that has the shape of a sphere or is close to it. The fuel forms a thin film and evaporates, entrained by a stream of air supplied under pressure into a small (up to 0.3 millimeter) hole in the center of the sphere. Oil vapors and air are mixed, forming a torch of the fuel mixture. This torch ignites and heats up what needs to be heated - the walls of the furnace or the liquid heat exchanger of the boiler.

Part of the oil does not have time to evaporate and burn and flows down below the hole, falling into the fuel collection pan. Further, the mining flows from the pallet to the fuel tank and is reused.

To increase the fluidity and volatility of mining, it is heated. The heated waste is sprayed into smaller droplets, which also improves the quality of the fuel mixture and the overall efficiency of the device.

How to make a burner for testing

In order to make a waste oil burner with your own hands, you will need:

  • cross piece for water pipes with a female thread, 2 "diameter;
  • a piece of a two-inch pipe with a cut external thread, 15-20 cm long;
  • copper tube with a diameter of 10 millimeters for fuel supply;
  • metal tube for air supply;
  • compressor 2-4 bar;
  • oil pump;
  • fittings for connecting the fuel line;
  • a valve for the fuel line to regulate the flow of fuel;
  • hemisphere - brass furniture handle or spherical nut.

The pump will fit any car or motorcycle; its drive shaft will need to be connected to an electric motor. It is best to take the compressor from an air conditioner - they are adapted for continuous operation.

The tube is screwed into one of the holes of the cross, into the opposite one is screwed in a plug with a hemisphere fixed on it so that it is in the center of the cross. An air supply tube is supplied to the hemisphere from the rear through a plug.

A fuel line is attached to the upper hole of the cross, from which the mining will drip onto the hemisphere. The bottom hole is led out into a pan for collecting unburned oil. All the main assemblies of a self-assembled waste oil burner:

  • crosspiece assembly;
  • compressor;
  • fuel tank;
  • pump;
  • power supply and control unit;

We make a burner nozzle for testing

The nozzle is the most critical element of the burner design for self-assembled mining. The accuracy of its manufacture determines the fuel efficiency and safety of the system. The larger the nozzle hole, the more powerful the burner will turn out.

In addition, it is very important that the air intake channel is even and smooth - then the shape of the torch will be optimal. The best option would be to use a ready-made jet with a hole of the desired diameter, for example, from a gas stove or carburetor.

But you can also drill a hole on a drilling machine. The use of a hand drill is not recommended due to the difficulty in maintaining the alignment of the hole.

The hemisphere can be made from a furniture handle of a suitable diameter or from a hemispherical nut. The nozzle must be mounted flush with the surface of the hemisphere. In the most extreme case, use is simply a strip of metal curved on the rule with a nozzle welded to it.

The power of the resulting burner can be estimated in advance with a known error. A burner with one 0.3 mm hole will be able to deliver approximately 16 kW of heat output. If more power is required, then it is better not to increase the diameter of the hole, but to make several of them, at a distance of at least 8 mm from each other. Practice has shown that from a hole larger than 0.3 mm, the air flow becomes turbulent, captures mining vapors worse, and the thermal efficiency of the device decreases.

The history of the emergence of burners on used engine oil

Working out burners became widespread in our country in the second half of the 20th century. The population was looking for an inexpensive way to heat the premises.

Using mining, which cost almost nothing, was very profitable compared to buying coal, firewood and even peat, not to mention heating with gas or electricity. More or less economical and safe devices came out from under the hands of home craftsmen.

Their principle of operation was reminiscent of the well-known kerosene gas, which ran on kerosene. Kerosene evaporated, and its vapors were burned in a separate pyrolysis chamber.

The main problem with such devices was strong soot and a pungent unpleasant odor due to incomplete combustion of the fuel. To avoid this, the fuel was first decomposed into fractions at a high temperature, and then these fractions were afterburned separately.

In 1969, the English inventor Robert Babbington received a patent for his stove, originally designed to run on diesel fuel. After the expiration of the patent, the design became available for repetition, both by industrial enterprises and by home craftsmen. A homemade waste oil burner of the Babbington design is much more economical and safer than other burner designs.

Advantages and disadvantages of a liquid fuel burner

  • Motor oil - more often than other types of mining, is used for the operation of boilers. Additionally, transmission oil is used. The viscosity of the fuel is average. For normal boiler operation, a high-quality filtration system is required. The mining contains a large percentage of impurities and small metal fractions.
  • Industrial oil- mining, drained from machine tools, pumps, textile machines. The fuel has a low viscosity and practically does not contain any impurities.

The burner for burning waste oils, in addition to the types of mining listed above, is capable of operating on kerosene and crude oil. For heating, refried vegetable oils are suitable.

Compressor testing is not recommended. The oils are poured into refrigeration and turbocompressor machines. The development is distinguished by low viscosity and a large percentage of impurities, which leads to increased soot formation, frequent replacement of filters on the fuel line and injector.

The principle of operation of the burner during mining

The device and the principle of operation of the burner during mining is associated with forced heating and partial evaporation of fuel. After the fuel is supplied to the burner device, it is directed to the preliminary preparation chamber, where it is heated to the required temperature and oxidized.

Combustion of the air-fuel mixture takes place in a flame. For the ignition of the air-fuel mixture, the electrodes located directly in front of the spray nozzle are responsible.

To maintain the intensity of combustion, the turbulence of the air currents created by the fan blades is used. The principle of operation of the burner is identical to devices operating on diesel oil or liquefied gas.

There is a certain classification of burners according to the type of power regulation. The consumer is offered burners of the following type:

  • Single stage burners- have a simple design and principle of operation. Heating of the coolant is carried out at 100% power mode. When the required temperature is reached, the burner simply turns off until the coolant cools down to the set values. After that, combustion resumes.
    The principle of operation used in a single-stage burner is ineffective and leads to a significant overconsumption of fuel.
  • Two stage burners- modules operating in constant mode without shutdown. The heating principle is as follows. The burner works at 100% until the heating medium reaches the required temperature. After that, it switches to a reduced power of 30 or 40%. The burner does not switch off completely.
    Sliding two-stage and modulating burner blocks have a similar operating principle.

The cost of two-stage and modulating burners is quite high, but the costs are fully paid off due to the savings in fuel combustion, reaching 15-20% compared to single-stage counterparts.

Preparation of mines for combustion in a boiler

By itself, the oil does not burn well, when burned under normal conditions, it emits a large percentage of soot and soot. The mining contains debris, metal inclusions. To normalize operation, the burner has two important components:
  • Filtration system- the used oils are purified before incineration. The filter is installed on the fuel supply line and before feeding to the injector. The filtration system is ineffective if highly contaminated viscous oil is being burned. The filters quickly become clogged, causing the boiler to shutdown.
  • Preheating chamber- working off, before feeding to the nozzle, needs to be heated. Oil brought to a certain temperature is easier to ignite and burns with a minimum non-combustible residue, in the form of soot.

Organization of oil supply to the burner

Waste oil automatic burners use the forced-feed principle. Such a device is more effective than the drip method used in homemade boilers.

A pump is responsible for the fuel supply in automatic burners. A pressure is created in the fuel line, under which the heated waste is supplied to the nozzle and sprayed. At the same time, a fan is running, creating a swirl of air currents with its blades. Fine dust injected into the combustion chamber is coiled and ignited to form a flame.

Excess oil is diverted back to the fuel storage. The well-coordinated work of all units is ensured by the boiler automation, which simultaneously controls the pump, nozzle, and recirculation system.

Ignition and fire maintenance system

Empirically, it has been proven that the optimal combustion temperature of the waste oil flame is approximately 180 ° C. With such an intensity of combustion, the mining burns out completely, practically without smoke residues and soot.

There are several systems in the boiler that make it possible to ensure that the combustion temperature reaches the specified parameters:

  • Pre-preparation block- in the chamber, the engine oil is heated to 80-90 ° C.
  • Turbine - combustion intensity is achieved by continuously pumping air into the combustion chamber.
  • Ignition - electric ignition is carried out. Immediately behind the nozzle, there are two electrodes that automatically ignite the air-fuel mixture.

Increased formation of soot indicates a malfunction of one of the blocks of the ignition or fire support system.

How to choose a burner for used oil

When selecting a burner module, you will need to correctly calculate its power and select the brand of the manufacturer. Experts recommend paying attention to a few more details:
  • Pre-heating unit- this unit somewhat increases the heat generator's need for electricity, but improves the heat transfer and efficiency of the burner. The heating block works like a heating element heater.
  • Nozzle design- a module responsible for the formation of a finely dispersed air-fuel mixture. According to the principle of fuel supply, injectors are divided into hydraulic, mechanical and electronic. The latter are distinguished by high thermal efficiency.

Calculating the correct burner output

In fact, the calculation of the burner power is carried out according to the boiler in which the module is planned to be installed. Increasing or decreasing performance is unacceptable. It is forbidden to install a 25 kW burner in a 10 kW boiler. The simplest solution would be to buy a burner for the power of the boiler.

    The main part of a conventional oil burner is a nozzle through which oil is atomized and mixed with the combustion air. If there is contamination in the liquid fuel, the injector can become clogged. Therefore, high demands are placed on the quality of diesel fuel.

    What can we say about working off, in which the amount of dirt just rolls over? It is impossible to burn it with a liquid fuel nozzle without preliminary cleaning.

    Fuel-air free volumetric combustion (cup evaporative burner).

    The waste can be burned at all without pressurization and heating, dropping it into a hot bowl. But such devices, more or less decently, work only as part of a boiler or furnace for development, so they are not burners in their own sense.

The easiest way to make a torch is using a small gas can or blowtorch.

To work you need to prepare:

  • capacity;
  • welding machine;
  • grinder;
  • a piece of 1.5-inch pipe;
  • a round plate equal to the inner diameter of the pipe;
  • a piece of wire 6 - 8 mm;
  • a bolt with a through internal hole for an oil supply nozzle;
  • a thick round blank for the lid.

The design of such a burner is quite simple. An air supply tube with a hemispherical tip, as well as a waste oil supply tube and a line for removing unburned fuel, must be brought into the body of a home-made waste oil burner.

Installation work order:

  1. For the convenience of work, it is better to draw up an approximate drawing of a waste oil burner at first. This will greatly facilitate the selection and manufacture of parts, as well as the assembly of the entire structure.
  2. The first step is to make a hole in the center of the plug with a diameter equal to the diameter of the pipe.
  3. Next, a hemisphere is welded onto the end of the air supply pipe. Before that, a hole is made in it strictly in the center. Problems can arise with this, since there is hardly a suitable tool in home tools. The solution to this problem is to install a nozzle of the recommended inner diameter.
  4. After the hemisphere is welded to the tube, the latter is welded to the plug. This must be done as carefully as possible so that the air supply tube is exactly in the center of the burner body. Otherwise, the air flow will not fall in the center of the nozzle, but on its walls, which will make the burner ineffective.
  5. Then the plug is screwed into the tee. And with the help of a caliper, the position of the hemisphere is measured. It is in the place where it will be located that a hole is drilled in the body for the fuel supply. It must accurately hit the upper arc in order to drain over the entire hemisphere.
  6. A thread is cut in the hole with a tap to secure the fitting. Then a squeegee is screwed into the outlet of the tee, thereby installing the nozzle. The oil supply pipe to the burner is twisted 2-3 turns around the nozzle and connected to the mining supply system.
  7. The air supply tube is connected to the discharge compressor. A hole must be made in the burner body to ignite the mixture. From below, a branch pipe for removing unburned oil is screwed into the tee.
  8. The waste oil burner can now be tested. To begin with, it is fixed on a special bracket.
  9. To prevent the tests from causing a fire, it is advisable to conduct them in an open area. To begin with, compressed air is supplied to the burner, and then used oil, after which the mixture is ignited. As the burner warms up, its operation should be much more stable.

Summing up the results of the manufacture of the burner, it should be noted that:

  • The air consumption is very low, only a few liters per hour.

How did the first test burner appear? It's all about human ingenuity and an attempt to find a way out of this situation.

Somewhere in the 60s of the last century, our compatriots got the opportunity to purchase a summer cottage plot for little money. A gas heating system is still a luxury for many today, as is equipment for solid fuels.

But there is a plot that needs to be heated somehow in winter. Although gasoline and firewood were cheap at the time, the salaries available to people did not allow them to acquire such solutions.
