Linkrust wallpaper: Correct gluing technique! Lincrust in the interior - elegant design and durability! How to glue linkrust wallpaper

Lincrust or linkrusta- one of the modern finishing roll materials, characterized by good strength, durability, hygroscopicity. Invented back in 1877 by Frederick Walton, this material is still very widely used in the decoration of various premises.

The very name "linkrust" comes from the name of the English brand Lincrusta-Walton, which in turn is derived from the Latin word "linum" meaning flax and "crusta" meaning relief. Lincrust is a roll material on a fabric or paper base, on which a thin layer of plastics made from natural materials or alkyd resins is applied.

Lincrust is applied in the same way as any other type of wallpaper. In particular, it is good for kitchen finishes as it is easy to clean and can withstand mild disinfectant solutions. Lincrust can be painted with oil paint.

The technology of gluing linkrust on walls has some peculiarities. So, the preparation of walls for finishing with linkrust includes the following stages. Old plaster from the walls should be removed, then new plaster should be applied, trowelled and smoothed. The dried surface of the wall must be treated with a pumice stone or ordinary brick wrapped in sandpaper.

Then using a dry cloth, the wall surface should be cleaned of dust and primed a mixture of natural drying oil (2 kg), iron grated red lead (1 kg) and drier for hardening the composition (50 g). After priming, the walls must be dried for 2-3 days, then, after filling and re-priming, dry for a few more days. Only then can you start gluing the linkrust.

Cut the linkrust for gluing with a margin of 10 cm - for shrinkage. The prepared canvases should be rolled up and soaked in hot water (about 60 ° C) for 3-5 minutes. Then the rolls must be placed vertically, let the water drain, and then roll the linkrust face up on the floor.

Leave the linkrust for 10-12 hours to soften and shrink. If this is not done, subsequently, when gluing the linkrust, gaps are formed between the joints of the canvases, up to 10 mm. After shrinkage, it is necessary to cut the edges on both sides by pressing a long strip to the linkrust webs. This is necessary so that the joint between the canvases is practically invisible.

The glue for gluing linkrust is perchlorovinyl or bustilate. You can also glue linkrust on flour or starch paste by adding 200 g of wood glue.

Having smeared the linkrust canvas with glue, you can proceed directly to gluing. The first sheet must be glued exactly along the vertical plumb line, all subsequent sheets are aligned with the previous one. It is important to firmly press the edges of the canvases together to avoid the appearance of gaps. When gluing, the linkrust should be smoothed immediately, otherwise wrinkles may form.

The wall finished with linkrust should be dried within 7-10 days, then it can be covered with oil or enamel paint. The gaps that appear at the joints can be masked with a semi-oil putty, and after drying, wipe with a sandpaper and paint over 1-2 times with paint of the selected color.

Lincrust is a thick handcrafted wallpaper made from wood flour, linseed oil and wax. If you decide to add a little glamor to your apartment or want to surprise your friends and family, then the Linkrust wallpaper is what you need!

Linkrust installation

Installation of linkrust is quite simple and practically does not differ from gluing ordinary wallpaper. The difference is that a special glue is needed for linkrust, and the canvas should be moistened with warm water before work.

It must be remembered that linkrust is a rather heavy material, so it is better not to work alone.

Linkrust coloring

Linkrust staining should be started one day after installation. Consider the technology of coloring linkrust wallpaper.

Regular staining

The technology resembles the design of wallpaper for painting. We need a velor or mohair roller with a medium pile. The paint is applied from top to bottom evenly, all relief irregularities are carefully filled. To achieve color saturation, apply another coat of paint after 3-4 hours. This technology is simple, does not require much time and special talents in the visual arts. But keep in mind, artless coloring will not reveal all the beauty and elegance of elite wallpaper, but rather the opposite.

Patination of linkrust

With the help of patina, you can create the effect of old age wallpaper, which will look very luxurious. First, apply the base color. We take alkyd enamel and apply a thick layer to the canvas, painting over all the textured elements. We wait until the first layer is dry and proceed to the second stage of staining.

The patina with which we want to decorate the wallpaper is mixed with the enamel in a tray in a one-to-one ratio. In this case, you do not need to achieve a homogeneous mass. With a thick brush, apply the composition to the wall with horizontal light lines. The paint will only settle on the linkrust tabs. The result is a decorative, beautiful finish that combines several colors.

Now let's move on to the two methods that I tried for my bedroom.

Linkrust's native wallpaper color is ivory. How linkrust wallpaper looks before painting, after installation can be seen in the photo at the beginning of the article.

So, the third dyeing technology.

Volume creation

I did it with acrylic paint. The choice fell on her, tk. it is not immediately grasped, but for this method it is important. The drawing on my linkrust is in the form of large flowers, so I tried it on a flower, because it has more textured elements. We take a small roller with a medium-sized nap and apply the paint with confident movements to the flower, trying to hammer in all the embossed grooves. We get a completely filled flower. We are waiting for 5-7 minutes for the acrylic paint to set a little.

Now we take a regular sponge, moisten it with water, wring it out so that it does not drip from it, and begin to wipe the paint from the surface of the flower. By doing this, we brighten the surface, and the depth remains darker.

The shadow effect appears and our flower seems to have blossomed on the wall.

This technology is stunningly beautiful, but I couldn't use it to color the entire canvas, because my room is light and such a bright accent would not be appropriate.

Surface painting

I have never seen anything easier in creating beauty! We take a regular sponge so that it is slightly damp. In a tray of acrylic paints, create the desired color and lightly wet the sponge. With a sponge, lightly rub the paint into our linkrust.

It turns out that the paint remains on the textured elements of the wallpaper, slightly coloring the background.

I also wanted to highlight the flowers more vividly, so I once again went through the flowers with a darker shade.

I really liked the result - this is exactly what I wanted.

I highlighted the texture, and it turned out not too dark canvas.

The main advantage of linkrust is its repeated staining and long-term use. Let's say, after a couple of years, I want to change something in the interior, and then I can simply repaint the linkrust in a different color using any technology!

Lincrust is not a newfangled invention at all. This material dates back more than 150 years, and was invented by the same Englishman who invented linoleum. Lincrust wallpaper is used to decorate interiors that are completely different in purpose and style - from royal chambers to ship cabins and railway carriages. Why is this material interesting for us?

(or linkrusta) is a long-known finishing material, thanks to which it is possible to create unusually beautiful and noble coatings.

It harmoniously intertwines such important qualities as environmental safety, durability and classic design. Unlike all known wall coverings, lincrust has a rather deep embossing and has a stately appearance.

Characteristic features of linkrust

This type of wallpaper appeared in Britain in the middle of the 19th century. This material was used with great success for the decoration of palaces, castles and estates. It is noteworthy that over time, this coating only becomes stronger. This is confirmed by the surviving linkrust samples made 100 years ago.

Linkrust is produced in rolls, like ordinary wallpaper. It has high strength and ductility at the same time, perfectly retaining the relief. It is these properties of wallpaper that make it possible to use them to cover uneven surfaces.

Linkrust production is still carried out according to ancient technologies using natural ingredients.

Linkrust production technology

First, the wood is processed into flour and sieved through several sieves, each time reducing the holes. This is necessary to obtain a homogeneous composition. The resulting flour is mixed with linseed oil, finely sifted chalk, rosin, wax and other natural ingredients.

As a result, a plastic mass is formed that has the ability to hold the created relief. The mass is applied to the prepared paper tape and a relief pattern is made with the help of special rollers.

At the end of the process, the tape is cut to size and dried. The drying process takes two months. This is necessary so that excess moisture evaporates from the material and excess odors evaporate.

The natural color of linkrust is ivory. After the wallpaper has been pasted, it can be covered with paint, decorated with decorative effects: gilding, metallic sheen, patina, craquelure.

Linkrust benefits

  • The use of natural components in the manufacture of coating... Linkrust is made mainly from natural ingredients. However, in order to keep the formed relief well, special additives are added to the top layer, which do not affect the environmental safety of the linkrust.
  • The material has excellent heat resistance and air permeability... It perfectly provides natural ventilation of the room, while vinyl wallpaper prevents the walls from breathing.

  • The coating is not prone to delamination, compared to many modern laminates. This quality is due to the fact that the surface layer, penetrating into the structure of the paper base, is fused into one whole.
  • Durability... Proof of this is the well-preserved Victorian interiors seen in old English houses. In addition, in the last century, lincrust was actively used for the decoration of carriages, aircraft salons, cabins, etc. The equipment has long been written off, and the decoration has been preserved as new. Over time, this coating does not wear off, but, on the contrary, becomes stronger and more resistant.
  • Linkrust does not require special care... The usual brushing of dust is enough.
  • The material is not subject to deformation, shrinkage, quite elastic, resistant to minor household damage.

disadvantages
  • Complex installation process.
  • Lincrust does not like the cold. It becomes brittle at low temperatures.
  • The coating is very expensive. The price of one roll is 8 - 25 thousand rubles. High cost items are glue, painting, linkrusta decoration. If you need borders, friezes, panels, this will also require a lot of investment.
Linkrust installation

Anyone who knows how to handle wallpaper can handle the gluing of this coating. The sequence of work is practically no different from the usual wall decoration.

Step one

First you need to remove all switches, sockets, skirting boards, platbands. After that, the walls are cleaned of the previous finishing materials, all cracks and potholes are putty, rubbed with a sandpaper and primed.

Advice. Use a deep penetration primer for effortless adhesion. An important condition is that the walls must be flat, clean and dry.

Step two

The material is cut into canvases of the required size, making an allowance of several centimeters and making sure that the pattern matches. The prepared sheets must be rolled up again and held in hot water (up to 60 degrees) for ten minutes.

After that, they are laid out in a stack face up on a flat surface. Remove excess water with a clean cloth. The canvases must be kept in a stack for 8-10 hours until they soften and shrink. Usually, linkrust is prepared for gluing in the evening - overnight it will become soft, shrink and in the morning it will be ready to work. After such preparation, the joints between the canvases will not be visible at all.

Lincrust, made on a fabric base, does not need to be soaked. It is usually glued dry.

Step three

What glue is needed... For gluing lincrust canvases, they mainly use perchlorovinyl glue, "Bustilat" or an adhesive based on flour (possibly starch) paste with the necessary content of wood glue in it.

Step four

Bonding linkrust... In order for the wallpaper to stick evenly, clear vertical lines are beaten off the walls with a lined cord.

The prepared canvas is smeared with an adhesive and folded in half for even soaking, keeping them for ten minutes. Apply glue to the wallpaper and always to the wall surface..

The cloths are applied to the wall in a strictly vertical line, carefully leveled and smoothed to remove all bubbles, wrinkles and folds. Each subsequent sheet is glued end-to-end, combining the pattern and paying attention to the tight laying of the strip to the strip, be sure to press the edges.

If necessary, the upper part of the panel is temporarily fixed with wooden glazing beads on nails, since the weight of the wallpaper can slide down. After drying, the holes from the nails should be putty and sanded. When you paint these areas, they will be invisible.

In the corners of the cover they are joined. In cases where it is necessary to overlap the corner, a rail is attached to the panel and tightly fixed until it dries completely.

The walls will dry for several days. If you are not satisfied with the original linkrust color, the coating can be painted over.

Plinths and platbands are installed in their places before the wallpaper is painted, and when the paint is dry, switches and sockets are attached.

Step five

This is best done with oil paints. Today, painting with acrylics has become very popular. However, experienced craftsmen do not recommend acrylic, since the water base of the paint begins to interact negatively with the linseed oil that is part of the linkrust.

As a result, the acrylic coating is easily damaged. At the same time, acrylic fans argue that this particular option is safer for health. In addition, acrylic paints have a wide range of colors. With careful use, the coating can last for many years. So the decision of the final choice is yours.

When the paint is dry, you can decorate the raised elements. The embossed edges are covered with golden or silver shades of wax paste, and then gently washed out with your hands. This method is most often resorted to when creating a classic style interior.

Follow-up care

Dirt and dust formed on the surface during operation can be removed with a damp cloth. The coating is not afraid of brushes and detergents.

If the dirt has eaten too much or there is a desire to change color, wipe the lincrust with White Spirit and repaint. When repainting the coating in a lighter color, it is important to know that paint consumption will increase significantly.

Any damage to the linkrust can be easily repaired with a putty, giving it the required relief.

Scope of linkrust

The amazing wear resistance of the material, the possibility of deep embossing and easy paintability attract designers all over the world. It is often used as an inexpensive substitute for stucco molding, which gives the interior a luxurious and elite look.

Lincrust is widely used to decorate luxury hotels, casinos, restaurants and bars. In residential interiors, this coating is most often chosen for pasting partitions, creating decorative elements on walls and ceilings, for decorating built-in furniture.

Lincrust wallpapers are very popular among true connoisseurs of style and beauty.

Output

Having made a choice in favor of this unique finishing material, you can easily create in your home not just a beautiful, but a luxurious coating that even your grandchildren will admire. These wallpapers live a long time, like true family values.

Wood paneling: everything you need to know about the material of your dreams!

In a previous article, I talked about the unique final coating of walls and ceilings, vol. If the choice of the method of finishing the room fell on this version of the wallpaper, you can be sure of a high-quality and sophisticated appearance of the interior upon completion of the repair. Since the cost of linkrust is high, there is a way to save the family budget by sticking and painting the linkrust with your own hands. This process will be discussed in this article.

Preparation for gluing linkrust wallpaper

Before starting work on wallpapering, you need to purchase and prepare consumables. The correct choice of linkrust wallpaper will save you from problems in the process of working with the material. Back in the store, having chosen the relief and type of wallpaper, go through each roll. The batch number and production date on all rolls must be the same, this will help to avoid the smallest differences in batches, even with the same relief. Next, inspect the rolls for damage to the stucco, chips, defects and torn edges. If the rolls meet all the indicators - make a purchase. In addition to the wallpaper itself, you will need a special glue for linkrust, perchlorovinyl or flour paste based glue.

Linkrust paint will also come in handy, although not immediately, you will have time to select and purchase the desired type and color. In addition to consumables, prepare wallpaper tools:

  • Plumb line and a simple pencil for even positioning of the canvases;
  • Cloth for removing excess glue;
  • Rollers and brushes of various sizes for applying glue and paint to the canvas;
  • A spatula for leveling the canvas and a roller for processing joints;
  • Wooden slats and thin nails for fixing the canvas on the wall;
  • Ladder.

Wallpaper gluing linkrust

Consider the step-by-step instructions for pasting walls with linkrust.

  • Preparatory work is required not only for the base, but also for the wallpaper. Clean the walls from the old coating, fix the cracks with a putty. Remove skirting boards and sockets, level, prime and sand the surface. After covering the wall with a deep penetration primer, suspend work for 2-3 days until it is completely dry. Cut the wallpaper to the required length, do not forget about allowances of 5-15 cm, depending on the pattern, which will be needed to connect the patterns. Roll the strips and place them in hot water for 10 minutes. Roll out the canvases on the floor covered with polyethylene, leave overnight. Such preparation will help to avoid shrinkage and make the joints invisible.
  • Apply the glue to the wall and canvas. Fold the linen in half and leave to soak for 10 minutes. At this time, use a plumb line and a pencil to mark an even vertical line on the wall.

  • Further work is standard for wallpapering. Glue the first sheet, smooth the surface. Stick the second sheet joint to joint, carefully joining the patterns. Thus, paste over the entire room.
  • The peculiarity of working with linkrust wallpaper is the severity of the wet canvas. To prevent the wallpaper from moving out of place under its own weight, nail a wooden strip on top of the perimeter of the room. Install the same strip in the corners so that the canvas does not come off during drying.
  • After the wallpaper dries, cut off the excess fabric, dismantle the rail, carefully putty and sand the remaining holes from the nails. If necessary, do the same with the seams between the canvases.

Linkrust wallpaper painting

Complete drying of the linkrust will take from several days to a week. Take your time with the beginning of staining, the paint will fall unevenly on a damp base, and will not last long. The choice of paint for linkrust consists of two of the most popular positions. Acrylic paint is environmentally friendly, it has a wide range of shades, it is easy to apply and easy to use (not afraid of moisture). But over time, acrylic reacts with the materials that make up the linkrust, it becomes brittle and crumbling. Oil paint is devoid of such drawbacks, it will firmly cover the linkrust and can only be removed with a change in color. Use rollers for coloring linkrust. A unique design can be achieved by hand painting the relief in a shade that contrasts with the base.

The use of linkrust in the interior is a way to make renovations practical and durable, and the design is expensive and sophisticated.

Linkrusta wallpapers have been on the market for about 140 years.

Linkrusta wallpaper is a relief wall covering, reminiscent of stucco in the form of volumetric patterns

During this period, a lot has changed in the world of wall coverings, and this exclusive material has been consigned to oblivion. Now it is experiencing a revival, and you can not only see it at thematic exhibitions, but also buy it in specialized stores.

The decisive role in the appearance of these wallpapers was played by chance. The English chemist Frederick Walton converted the linseed-oil-based mass from which linoleum was made for the floor, and applied the material while still hot to the paper sheet with an engraved roller - this is how Linkrust wallpaper was born. The new roll material appeared on the market in the last quarter of the 19th century and immediately gained immense popularity. The coating originally had a natural color with embossed relief patterns, but now it looks much more impressive thanks to the application of glossy enamel.

Working with Linkrust wallpaper takes time

To ensure good adhesion of the wallpaper to the wall, it is recommended to use specially selected agents such as glue, a primer and an alkyd-based paint to be applied (see instructions and color markings on the right side).

For gluing Linkrust wallpaper you will need

  1. Linkrust wallpaper
  2. building level
  3. wallpaper knife
  4. steel ruler
  5. pencil
  6. sponge
  7. putty knife
  8. foam roller
  9. solvent
  10. primer "universal glue
  11. multicolored enamel

✓ Note:

The enamel paint of your choice can be ordered from specialized paint shops using color charts. You can choose only one color or highlight patterns effectively - it all depends on your taste!

The name is made up of the Latin words Linum (flax) and Crusta (hard shell, shell). The linoleum-like material is made from oxidized linseed oil, rosin, copal resin, wood flour and dyes and fillers. The wall cladding is 3.5 mm thick and is pressure-resistant and impact-resistant.

Linkrust's wallpaper with his own hands: the progress of the photo

1. To make the pattern repeat the same, the edges of the individual panels along the perimeter are accurately cut with a wallpaper knife using a steel ruler.

2. Using a spirit level, draw a vertical line on the wall with a pencil.

3. Moisten the seamy sides of the wallpaper with a sponge and warm water. Fold the sheets with the wrong sides inward for about 30 minutes to absorb the water. After the soaking time has elapsed, wipe off the excess water with a cloth.

4. Apply an even layer of special adhesive with a notched trowel.

5. Place the strip along the marking line and glue to the wall.

6. Roll the wallpaper with a foam roller (small for patterns, large for surfaces) from the middle to the edges to remove any air bubbles. Then leave the wallpaper to dry for 15 hours.

7. Then apply solvent to a soft cloth and degrease the wallpaper. Then apply a primer to the surface with a velor roller.

8. After the primer has dried, first apply a darker purple shade with a brush. Drying time will be about 16 hours.

9. To accentuate the embossed pattern, apply a light purple hue to it with light strokes.

10. The framing of the wallpaper forms a decorative profile, which is attached with a universal adhesive.

Linkrust wallpaper - how to glue: photo

Note from the Encyclopedia of Building Materials

Lincrust is (from Latin linum - flax and crusta - relief) - a decorative coating that was created in the second half of the 19th century. as an alternative to stucco molding. It is distinguished from ordinary wallpaper both by its high, clear and expressive relief, and by its composition: a mixture of wood flour, linseed oil, wax, chalk and rosin, applied on a paper or jute base.

Linkrust has many advantages, among which the most important are respectable appearance and durability. This beautiful covering adorns the halls of Buckingham Palace, the White House, luxury hotel rooms and luxury cabins of luxury yachts. Being relatively soft in the first few years, over time, the linkrust becomes stronger and harder, as the natural components that make up it gradually turn to stone. The lifespan of the material is calculated in decades and even centuries. It is also important that the walls covered with linkrust “breathe” very well. Moreover, the linseed oil contained in it is a natural antiseptic that prevents the development of fungi and mold in high humidity conditions. This means that this material can be used to decorate the walls of kitchens and even bathrooms (with the exception of "wet" areas).

Well, as for the shortcomings, it is a high price (from 17,000 rubles per roll) and the difficulty of gluing. We will dwell on it in more detail.

Lincrust is supplied in rolls with a width of 0.5; 0.6; 0.75 and 0.9 m and a length of 10-12 m. During transportation and installation, the material must be handled very carefully. Before starting the finish, the walls should be cleaned, leveled and covered with alkyd primer (as recommended by the manufacturer). The wallpaper itself also needs to be prepared. They are cut taking into account the coincidence of the pattern, soaked in warm water for 10 minutes, and then spread face down and covered with a film for 6-10 hours so that the canvases are saturated with moisture and become elastic. After that, you can cut off the protective strips from the ends and start gluing.

Since the weight of linkrust can reach 2 kg / m2, it is necessary to use glue for heavy wallpaper. And if the height of the room exceeds 3 m, it is better not to glue the canvases, but to nail them with wallpaper nails, otherwise they may slide. Often they are additionally fixed from above with a thin wooden lath. Seams should be rubbed with oil-based fillers, which are friendly to linseed oil that is part of the linkrust. If you use a water-soluble compound, it is likely that cracks will form in the seams over time.

The minimum drying time for wallpaper is 24 hours, but it is better not to disturb them for several days. After the glue has finally set, and the canvases have dried and become solid, you can proceed to the finishing - covering with protective and decorative compounds. These can be varnish-based paints or acrylic enamels. There are a great variety of decor options. Wallpaper is painted to look like metal, wood, stone, plaster and ivory. And if the finish gets bored or out of fashion, nothing prevents you from changing it. Lincrust lends itself well to restoration and can be painted countless times.
