I want to show you how I made hot pads out of plywood.

I took plywood and drew circles of the right size on it.

Then you need to take a manual jigsaw and cut out these circles with it.

Then I took a few simple silhouettes and transferred them to my blanks using carbon paper.

In order to start cutting out the pattern, you need to drill a hole in it for a nail file.

And that's what happened.

Then the entire workpiece must be carefully sanded from all sides - inside and out. I used an ordinary sandpaper, a sanding block, and even a natfil in especially thin and uncomfortable places.

On the back of the coasters, I wrote a congratulation with a burning device.

Since I hope that the hot pads will be used for their intended purpose, I did not varnish them, but applied only a thin layer of drying oil. Drying oil was applied with a regular foam rubber sponge.

So that the coasters do not slide on the table, they need "legs". A piece of unwanted skin is perfect for this purpose.

I glued the leather "legs" with Moment glue. This was the final chord.

I used a mahogany powder diluted with water. I glued the shelf on epoxy, but you can glue on PVA, just take professional glue. Varnish used NTs on wood, it dries quickly, you can use other varnishes on wood, there are a lot of them.

We buy sandpaper fine and coarse in grain size. Yes, I almost forgot, we also need a drill. An electric drill is what we need, you can also use a manual one.

We will definitely need buttons and carbon paper. Now we have everything to work with, let's get started.

The stand consists of five parts. We need to cut out two large walls, two small ones and the bottom of our stand. Let's start with a small sidewall, choose a piece of plywood according to the size of the part.

Small sidewall

We put the carbon paper on the plywood from the top, fasten the drawing in the corners with buttons and trace our drawing with a pencil. We remove the buttons and put aside the drawing and carbon paper.

Now we need to drill holes in order to insert a file through them. We drill those places that we will cut out. The drill will need three millimeters.

Large sidewall

We take a jigsaw, clamp one end of the file, and pass the other through the hole and clamp it with a screw. I used pliers to clamp the file for effort, if you loosely tighten it, the file pops out. I think you have already decided where you will cut.

It should be a well-lit place that is comfortable for you. I must say right away that there will be a lot of dust, carpets, walkways, immediately clean away, and at the end of the work, vacuum and wet cleaning. From the beginning, we cut out the patterns of the middle, after sawing one, turn off the file and insert it into the next.

Stand bottom

When we sawed everything in the middle, we proceed to cut out the edges of our stand. And so having drunk one, we perform this operation with the rest. When sawing, keep the jigsaw at a ninety-degree angle so that your cut is not oblique.

Saw slowly exactly along the line, otherwise then you will be cleaning for a long time. It is better to cut longer than later, you will spend a lot of time cleaning up. When sawing, observe safety precautions so as not to injure yourself.

Do not hold your hand in front of the jigsaw, if the saw blade breaks, you may injure your hand. Be careful not to damage what you are sawing when sawing. I think everything worked out for you and you sawed out all five blanks of the stand for magazines and newspapers.

The next stage is cleaning, we will clean the cuts from the file. Now, how much time you will spend on cleaning will depend on how you cut it evenly. We clean from the beginning with coarse sandpaper, and then go through the fine one.

How well you clean will depend on the beauty of your coaster. If you are tired, put it off, and then when you are in the mood, continue. Don't rush to the next step.

Well, if you have everything ready, let's start staining the details of the stand. This must be done before gluing, because the stain through the glue will not wash the surface. I think you have decided which stain you will stain

The basic rule here is to evenly cover with a brush and rub with a cloth. Look well, so that there are no smudges and everywhere is wet. Do not forget to wear rubber gloves, otherwise it is very difficult to wash your hands after staining.

Protect eyes in case of contact, rinse immediately with cold water. After staining, let the parts dry well, and then we proceed to assembly. This is a critical step, take it seriously. According to the template, we outline with an awl where we will drill holes five millimeters deep and three millimeters thick.

We need to drill four holes in each part. We clamp the drill into the drill, be sure to make restrictions on the depth of drilling so as not to drill through. This can be done in a simple way by leaving five millimeters of the drill to focus on wrapping it with thin tape or adhesive tape.

Assemble it dry from the beginning and see if everything worked out well. I used epoxy for gluing.

We dilute the resin exactly in proportions as indicated in the instructions. You don’t need to dilute a lot; an ode to a third of a teaspoon is enough for us. We well coat the holes with a match, put the prepared carnations into the large sidewalls, six each and connect our product.

I decided to remake the pedestal for this dinosaur, and the fact that it looks ridiculous on it stands as if alive on a stone, but for some reason without a skin. In addition, its stand is very soft and constantly bent, but I already wrote about this there. I used 18 mm thick plywood as the material for the stand.

I did not want to make it square, so I had to make an oval template from a piece of thick paper. I folded it in half and drew a quarter of the oval radius by hand.

Cut out this quarter with scissors.

I marked the centers on the plywood, after which I attached the template to the left edge of the plywood and outlined its edges.

I did the same with the right edge.

It would be possible to immediately cut an oval out of paper if you fold the sheet in four. But there was not such a large sheet at hand, and the newspaper sheet is very soft and already painted, not suitable for creativity :-) Here is such an oval as a result. By the way, do not make thick lines on plywood with a pencil, especially if the plane is in almost perfect condition, since these lines subsequently do not sand well.

I wanted to embellish the pedestal a little, add a small frame (stripe) along the edge. Therefore, with a compass, he beat off the second oval, parallel to the first, for the burning apparatus.

By the way, the illumination of the jigsaw is homemade, so I painted a little how I mounted it.

Here you can clearly see how the jigsaw disfigured the edges, in principle, I expected to see something similar, maybe not on such a scale, of course. But since I was going to round off the top edge a little anyway, I didn’t do anything. So if you need a clean cut, then it is better to mark and cut the part from the opposite side (from below). In my case, this method was inconvenient, since the cut line runs close to the edge of the plywood, and it becomes somewhat more difficult to control the jigsaw at the edge.

Next came the rasp and sandpaper. By the way, it is better to skin the plywood plane along the fibers of the tree, especially if you start with coarse-grained paper, since all transverse scratches will show up well when you stain or varnish the part.

I didn’t remove deep scratches from the end, since the stand in this place is already striped :-)

I burned out a modest strip along the edge with a burning apparatus.

This is the kind of chemistry I found in my toolbox, a full can of PF-231 parquet alkyd varnish, almost dried remnants of a quick-drying mahogany varnish XB-784 and a bottle of drying oil. Varnish XB-784 decided to slightly tint the stand so that it would not be completely pale. It was not possible to dilute it with white spirit and a solvent (according to the instructions, it is diluted with toluene). By trial method, it was well diluted with drying oil, besides, it has now become less quick-drying.

Adding drying oil to the varnish, I played a little with the shades on the bottom of the stand.

He applied a home-made stain, wound in a bundle, with a piece of rag, as if rubbing it into the pores of plywood, he did not use a brush so as not to leave puddles. Then left to dry for a day.

The next day, I covered the stand with a thin layer of PF-231 parquet varnish, I also applied this varnish with a rag, tried it with a brush, but the villi climbed out of it, so I scored on it. Rags are easier and more practical, covered and thrown away, nothing needs to be washed or packed to the next layer. I put four layers in total.

By the way, in no case do not apply a thick layer of alkyd varnish, as it will take an awfully long time to dry, I already jumped on this rake when I made this chest.

Each layer dried for several days, then sanded with a zero, getting rid of dust specks and bumps.

The last layer was diluted with white spirit a little thinner.

I transferred the holes from the old stand to the paper stencil.

And from the stencil to the stand.

I drilled holes along the diameter of the support pins so that the fibers would not swell, I tried not to press hard and gave more revolutions in the drill.

After the holes were ready, I lightly cleaned the bottom of the lacquer smudges, and then painted it with black paint and glued the rubber legs. By the way, I sealed the exit holes on the bottom of the stand with the same rubber feet so that the iron pins would not fall very deep.

He transferred the dinosaur completely to the stand, collecting its parts on liquid nails.

Of course, the surface turned out to be not quite glossy, another layer of varnish suggests itself, but even in its current form it already looks very nice. So do not neglect such material as plywood, you can also find your charms in the striped end, the main thing is to know where and how to use them.

A small appendage to the wooden theme. The casket during the assembly of which I made a bunch of mistakes.

I assembled this box from the remnants of various materials left after the repair, so to speak, from the trash. When assembling it, I tried to put together all the mistakes that could only be made. The beech parquet from which it was assembled turned out to be damp, as a result, a month later the box was pulled in all directions, the lid was bent in an arc. I used putty for oak, besides, I cleaned it poorly in some places, after varnishing, it appeared as dark spots. It can be said that I didn’t cover it with varnish, but poured it, more and thicker, as a result, it dried for me for almost six months. :-)
