Stylish and effective pillows-letters with their own hands. Do-it-yourself volumetric letters

The original home decoration in the form of three-dimensional pillow letters is very popular with needlewomen. They are made from various fabrics and use a filler to give shape. Typically, these interior items are made in the form of the first letters or full names of newborns. They are placed in the children's room or living room.

The original home decoration in the form of three-dimensional pillow letters is very popular with needlewomen.

For those who have never tried to sew such accessories for the home, the work may seem complicated and require investments, but in fact, making pillows in the form of soft letters is very simple. Even a beginner can handle this task.

For sewing you will need:

  • fabric of the same color or contrasting shades;
  • synthetic filler;
  • threads to match the material;
  • scissors;
  • sewing machine for making even seams and their processing;
  • pattern paper;
  • ruler 50 cm;
  • pencil;
  • safety pins;
  • chalk for transferring patterns to fabric.

If there is no sewing machine in the house, you can try to make pillow letters with your own hands, but this will be a very lengthy process, since the size of the products is rather big. In addition, it is better to overcast the seams to prevent shedding and divergence of the fabric during operation.

DIY pillow letters: what fabric to take?

Preferences regarding the material for crafts are individual, but most often they stop at the following options:

  • cotton;
  • fleece;
  • jersey;
  • upholstery fabric: microvelour or flock.

The main requirement is density. The material must be durable to wear, as in the children's room the pillows will experience a lot of stress. You can use old stocks of fabric left over from sewing bedding or other things.

Preferences regarding the material for crafts are individual

It is important to choose a color. If the letters are placed in a particular room, the prevailing tones should be taken into account. Products must be combined with wallpaper or furniture. As a basis, it is better to choose a fabric with an ornament in the form of stripes, polka dots, flowers, etc.

The sides that connect the front parts of the pillows can be plain. If the letters perform a developing function, and elements in the form of buttons, satin ribbons, buttons and other devices for working on fine motor skills will subsequently be sewn on them, you should choose a material without a pattern for all parts.

What sizes to choose?

When determining the parameters of letters, you can be guided by different considerations. The letters can be different M, L, F does not matter, the dimensions and tailoring technique are the same. With a limited amount of material for the manufacture of personalized pillows, a pattern of the appropriate size should be used.

Much also depends on the location of the finished products:

  • sides for a crib;
  • accessories for a sofa or ottoman;
  • decor for the room on which the child will sit or lie.

When determining the parameters of letters, you can be guided by different considerations.

The classic size of soft letters is 40x35 cm. But if desired, they can be made larger or smaller. On the Internet, you can download ready-made schemes for a height of 20 and 30 cm.

How to sew the letters of the Russian alphabet: patterns

The process of building a stencil is simple. You can use a pencil and ruler or print on a printer.

The fastest and most accurate would be the last option:

  1. In the Word editor, select a letter and set the necessary parameters for it. You can also download a ready-made template and specify the required height when printing. Most likely, you will have to break the stencil into several sheets.
  2. The printed pattern is cut out and glued together. Get a full size letter.
  3. To make it last longer, fix it with glue on cardboard or thicker paper.
  4. All ready-made stencils for one name should be placed side by side and imagine what the finished pillows will look like.
  5. If there is a desire to slightly change the shape of the letters, amendments can be easily made by highlighting unnecessary elements with a pencil and cutting with scissors.
  6. The sides are made in the form of strips with a width of 5 to 8 cm, given that about 8 mm from each edge will go to the seams.

After the patterns are ready, the creation of a masterpiece begins.

We sew the letter "H"

For the classic version of the pillow 40x35 cm, you will need a piece of material of any color 1 m long and 70 cm wide. You can take with a margin so that it is enough for the sidewalls.

  1. The fabric is folded in half with the front side inward. They put a pattern on top, fix it with safety pins and circle it with tailor's chalk or a simple pencil. Adding another 1 cm around the perimeter for seam allowances, again draw a line along the contour.
  2. Cut out blanks. From the remnants of fabric or other contrasting material, strips 5-8 cm wide are made, not forgetting to also add 1 cm along the edges. The length is determined by measuring the letter along the outer and inner borders with a centimeter.
  3. On a typewriter, the sidewall is attached to one side of the "H". Then the second part is attached in the same way. Don't forget to leave a small hole to turn the pillowcase inside out and fill the pillow with stuffing.

The slit is closed with a secret seam by hand. The soft letter "H" is ready. It can be used on its own, or you can add the rest of the elements that make up the name of the child. If the sewing machine has an embroidery function, you can also put the baby's full name on the side before stitching the parts.

We sew a bagel: a master class

Before you start making soft letters, you can practice on a simpler and equally popular product with children - a bagel. The scheme of its creation is clear even to a child.

To sew a round pillow with a diameter of 40 cm with a hole in the middle, you will need:

  • thick paper for building a stencil;
  • threads;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • plain light material for the base 50x100 cm;
  • pink fabric for decoration 40x40 cm;
  • sewing machine;
  • safety pins;
  • multi-colored buttons of a funny shape.

The color of the base and decor can be changed at your discretion.

Before you start making soft letters, you can practice on a simpler and equally popular product for children - a bagel.

Building a donut pattern:

  1. A sheet of paper measuring 50x50 cm is folded in half twice.
  2. Tie one end of a simple bobbin thread to a pencil.
  3. Using a ruler, measure 20 cm from the edge of the sheet and pull the thread to this length.
  4. Further, by attaching its opposite edge to the corner of the square where the fold is located, according to the principle of a compass, a smooth line is drawn with a pencil.
  5. It turns out the fourth part of the circle.
  6. Cut off excess edges.
  7. Fold the resulting figure diagonally.
  8. 3 cm are measured and cut from the corner - this will be a hole for the donut.
  9. Unfold the paper back, and the template is ready.

Preparatory stage:

  1. The fabric is folded in half with the front side inward.
  2. From above with safety pins fix the pattern.
  3. Circle the shape with a pencil and draw another circle at a distance of about 1 cm from the template. This is not necessary if you can cut the fabric by eye evenly, taking into account the allowances for the seams.
  4. The location of the hole is also indicated, but it is not necessary to cut it at this stage.

Decorative element:

Edible bagels are usually filled with sweet cream. The pillow should be no exception. For this purpose, a piece of pink fabric was prepared in advance.

  1. Again, fold the template in the form of a triangle and make the inner hole 3 cm wider.
  2. Straighten the paper and give the edges a wavy shape, drawing by hand, cut off the excess.
  3. They impose a pattern on the wrong side of the material for the “cream”, circle and cut out everything, including the hole in the middle, without seam allowances.

Part connection:

  1. A piece of pink material is attached to the front side of one half of the base, combining in the middle.
  2. Fasten the fabric with pins and attach the “cream” on a typewriter using a zigzag.
  3. Fold both parts of the base face inward and stitch the edges, leaving a hole of about 15 cm.
  4. The place where the donut hole will be is also stitched along the drawn contour. Then cuts are made crosswise and the excess material is carefully cut out, stepping back about 1 cm from the machine line. In order for the fabric to subsequently lie flat, the tips of the scissors make neat notches no more than 6 mm long at a short distance from each other.
  5. The pillowcase is turned inside out and stuffed with synthetic winterizer or other available filler to the desired degree of elasticity.
  6. With the help of a hidden seam, the remaining hole is sewn up by hand.

The resulting cute bagel lacks sprinkles. It is made by attaching multi-colored buttons to a pink background in random order. Such a pillow will become the favorite item of the child and his little guests.

How to sew a voluminous pillow-letter with your own hands

So, to make a letter pillow, we need: some fabric for the base on the upper and lower layer of the letter (25-40 cm, depending on the size of the pillow you need), a strip of fabric 8-10 cm wide for the side of the pillow, pillow filler .

First, on paper, we draw a pillow pattern of the size we need and transfer 2 parts to the main fabric in a mirror image.

Then, from the wrong side, we sew the side strip first to one main part, and then to the other, leaving a small part unsewn (to turn the pillowcase on the front side and fill the pillow with filler)

Turn out to the front side.

The holes for some letters (A, O, Z, B and others) are sewn like this: I sew the side fabric into a circle and sew it on one side to the base. The most difficult thing to sew to the second side (from the inside, pulling it out a little into that unsewn hole through which the pillow is then stuffed with filler), is already sewing by hand.

Stuff the pillow with filler.

We sew this hole by hand.

How to sew soft letters, tutorial / How to sew fabric letters, tutorial

To begin with, we print on the printer a letter (or the entire alphabet) of a size and shape that is convenient for us. I got a letter 19 * 19cm.
* I am often asked in letters - what font of letters I use ... I printed out the first alphabet I liked, although later I already made adjustments to the "appearance" of the letters with my own hand.

Since the letter is planned to be voluminous, we will need two types of fabric - for the "face" and the sides. Or you can just do it in one color. I pre-compacted the fabric with dublerin, although before that I used adhesive interlining. Today it was not at hand.
* If you plan to make the letters feel looser and more squeezing to the touch, and it doesn’t matter to you whether the letter will keep its shape well, then you can do without interlining.

1. We transfer the pattern of the letter to the inside of the fabric, I took the width of the sidewall 6 cm, so that our letter would stand steadily on its “legs” and have a pleasant puffiness. Seam allowances 0.5-0.7cm

2. We fold one "face" and the sidewall with the front part to each other, sew in a circle, not forgetting to make notches in all concave / convex places. I started sewing from the lower middle of the “crossbar” of the letter A, so that later, when sewing, this seam would be less noticeable.

* Pay attention - we do not sew the ends of the sidewalls - through this hole we will then turn out and fill our letter.
3. Now the most unpleasant thing is sewing in a "donut" (the inside of the letter). To do this, we measure the size of the inner hole with a thread or cord, and cut it off from the remaining sidewall with an allowance of 1-1.5 cm. You can sew this segment and sew the resulting pipe with your hands - I just stitched it in a circle on a typewriter. At the output, we have such a cuttlefish.

4. Further it is already easier - it remains to sew the second half of the letter in a circle.
And turn it out through the inner hole ("donut") or through the unsewn ends of the sidewalls (see the photo below).

5. Now the usual stuffing - you can stuff both through the middle hole and through the "crossbar" of the letter A (unsewn ends of the sidewalls). As practice has shown, in order for the letter to have a pleasant heaviness and keep its shape well, it is better to use a synthetic winterizer of medium thickness as a stuffing, it is more tenacious and becomes quite rigid during subsequent steaming.

6. Next, we sew the bottom with a hidden seam, and fix it with pins - the inner bagel

7. Finally, we go through a good iron with steam ... a lot of steam, a lot - I didn’t photograph this process, because everything is clear with it. Just by the N-th number of times we steam each side of the letter, as a result we get such a beauty.

1. In order to sew letter pillows, you must first draw the font itself, manually or on a computer, then cut it out onto thick cardboard.
2. The letters have a strip width of approximately 5 cm and about the letters themselves are 24 cm high and 18 cm wide, however, the size can be any.
3. Cut out 2 halves of the letters and side stripes for the entire width of the fabric.
4. First, we sew the side strip into the "holes" of the letters only and then around the entire perimeter. You will have to work hard with the center of the letters, before sewing, make a basting hand seam.
5. After we connect the two halves of the pillows, do not forget to leave a hole for the filler.
6. We cut off the corners and let them go to the seam so that they do not pull when stuffing.

If pillows in the form of the letter T, M, C and even E are only enough to assemble and turn out, then the letter A will have to be sewn in two steps. First, sew the seams indicated by the white line, that is, the outer contour. Only section (C) should be left unwired, and on the one hand, preferably on the back. In the diagram, the front and back sides of the fabric are specially highlighted in color. Naturally, the parts must be folded before sewing with the front sides inward. The inner part of the letter (A) can also be "assembled", but only half. That is, sew a strip 10 cm wide on one (any) side. On the other hand, you need to sew this strip only after you turn the pillow cover inside out.

As a result, you will get two unsewn sections: (C) and one inner side (D). Now you need to get through the section (C) to the inner unsewn part (D), chop it with pins or sweep it and stitch it on a sewing machine. After that, you will have only the plot (C). But you will need it to lay a synthetic winterizer or other insulation in the pillow. And only after that it will be necessary to sew up this area in one of the ways convenient for you, for example, with a manual blind stitch. If you have enough experience, you can put a zipper or sew on Velcro. It will come in handy when you decide to wash the pillow cover. You can even make a button fastener, which will be an additional decorative element of the textile letter pillow.

Note! Pay attention to the following points.
1. In order for the fabric to lay out well, it must be cut out in sharp corners, and notched in obtuse corners. To do this, the diagram shows scissors, just do not forget about it when you turn the pillow inside out. True, this is not always required, especially if the fabric is soft, knitted or the seam allowances are small. But if you sew a pillow cover from a stiff coarse fabric with an allowance of 2 cm, then you can’t do without it. See We sew and cut ourselves a patchwork quilt.
2. The side part (strip) must be marked in the places of its "turns", that is, the corners (in this example). When you have sewn one side of the strip all the way to the back of the cushion, place a parallel mark on that connection (corner). As you sew the strip to the other side, these marks will help you keep the fabric from shrinking or stretching too much. This is especially important when the front and back sides of the letters are cut from different materials.
3. Markup must be done for other letters, especially such as (O). Only in this case, notches will serve as marks instead of corners. Fold both parts of the letter and cut with the tips of the scissors along the contour of the letter in several places.

Volumetric soft pillows in the shape of letters are a stylish and unusual decoration for your bedroom. They are very easy to sew with your own hands, and you will need a little material. Let's look at step-by-step instructions for creating letter pillows at home. As an example in our master class, we use the letter A, since the principle of creating other letters is no different.

Choosing fabric and filler for letters

Pillows in the form of letters must be voluminous, so it is advisable to prepare several types of fabric: for the base and for the sides. The material from which you will sew pillows, choose at your discretion. We recommend buying felt, fleece, felt, or any other fabric whose edges will not roll out. If you have chosen thin material, be sure to glue it with interlining. Pillows in the form of letters can be both plain and bright.

Match the threads to the tone of the selected fabric, otherwise you will end up with a sloppy and ugly pillow.

Useful information: As a filler, you can use cotton wool, synthetic winterizer, synthetic winterizer, holofiber or pieces of fabric (if there were no suitable materials at hand). To sew a pillow according to our example, you will need at least 50 centimeters of a double padding polyester.

Necessary tools for the job

To sew a letter pillow, you will need the following materials:

  • Textile;
  • Threads to match the fabric;
  • Filler;
  • Graph paper or regular A3 paper sheet;
  • Scissors;
  • pins;
  • For a pattern - chalk, a bar of soap or a pencil;
  • Measuring tape or ruler.

You can sew fragments of a letter together manually or on a sewing machine. The advantages of the second option are obvious: you will spend much less time, and all the seams will turn out to be even and neat. But with minimal experience, even in the absence of a sewing machine, you can create a pillow letter in 4-5 hours.

Making a stencil and pattern

The stencil is best drawn on graph paper

First you need to decide on the size. If you plan to sew one pillow, it can be large and voluminous. If you want to make a name out of letters, then it is better to make them small. Basically, the height and width of the pillow letter doesn't matter. The most important thing is not to make a mistake with its thickness. Remember that after you fill it with filler, the pillow will “lose weight” by about 2 centimeters.

Before making a pattern, cut out several letters of different sizes from the prepared paper (before) and choose the most suitable option.

A pillow pattern in the form of a letter is best done on graph paper - this way it will turn out perfectly even. Pay attention to the picture (top and bottom). The arrows indicate the central points that divide the letter into 2 equal parts. We recommend doing this markup for any letter, because most of them have a mirror image (C, O, L, M, T, Ф and others). It is enough to make only one pattern for the front of the letter being made, the reverse side will be similar, just remember to turn it over when cutting the fabric.

It is not necessary to cut out the side parts that will connect the two halves of the letter into one. Choose a width and cut out strips of fabric marked with chalk or soap to the appropriate size. Do not forget about the seam allowances for all the details of the pattern.

Calculation of the amount of fabric

By marking the fabric, as in the picture, you will use the material most economically

For the pattern of the letter A, you will need a piece of fabric measuring 50 by 150 centimeters. For starters, choose a simple font, without curlicues and monograms. For the side stripes, choose a width of 10 centimeters (not counting the allowance). If necessary, they can be assembled from several pieces of fabric sewn across. If you buy cheap fabric, do not save, take it with a margin. Don't forget that you can use a companion fabric.

Before you go to the fabric store, lay out the pattern and mark the intended width. Then it will be easier for you to calculate its consumption. It is not necessary to cut the halves for the pillow in the form of a letter along the shared line. The fact is that for most letters you still have to cut the fabric in a circle. But you need to cut the strips in one direction, preferably along the shared thread. Remember about allowances, they must be present inside the pillow (at least 1.5 centimeters).

Pillow Sewing Instructions

When assembling fragments, sections (C) and (D) must be left unsewn

The most difficult thing in the sewing process will be to figure out the assembly sequence. When creating the letters T, M, E, C, etc., it will be enough just to turn them out at the end. And, for example, the letter "A" needs to be sewn in 2 steps. Stitch the seams first, mark them with a white line. This will be the outer contour of the product.

Useful information: Please note that the inner side of the fabric is highlighted in the diagram. Remember that before sewing, the fragments must be folded with the front sides inward.

As a result, you will have only 2 sections (C) and one inner part (D) unstitched. Get from area (C) to the unsewn side (D), grab it with pins or baste with thread and sew on a sewing machine.

There will be an untreated area (C). It is needed in order to lay the selected filler in the pillow. Stuff the product with it and sew the section (C) with it in a way convenient for you - for example, with a manual blind stitch. If you have already practiced complex sewing before, you can put a zipper on the pillow or sew on a special Velcro. It will come in handy if you want to wash the cover of the product. You can also make an unusual button fastener, which will serve as an additional decoration for the letter pillow.

When sewing, be sure to pay attention to the following points:

  1. In order for the fabric to be laid out easily, it must be cut out in sharp edges, and notched in blunt ones. On the proposed diagram, scissors are drawn when you turn the cover inside out - do not forget about it. Die-cuts and notches are not necessary if you have chosen a soft fabric or left a small allowance for the seams. However, if the material is dense, and the length of the allowance is more than 2 centimeters, it will not be possible to do without them.
  2. Be sure to mark the side strip in the places of its “turns”. If you are sewing one side of the strip completely along the outline, mark this connection (corner) with a parallel mark. When you start the second strip, the marks will help you prevent the fabric from shrinking or stretching. This is especially important if the front and back of the letter are made of different materials.
  3. Markup is desirable to do for all letters. Let's highlight "O". In it, instead of the proposed angles, notches should serve as marks. To make them, fold the two parts of the blanks for the pillow letter and cut the fabric along the contour in several places with the edge of the scissors.

Product decoration

To decorate the finished product, you can use stripes, bows, ribbons and other elements.

A precisely constructed pattern of a pillow letter, the correct cut and marking of the junctions, cuttings and notches of the corners will help you make a beautiful and neat pillow. The use of a companion fabric can be considered as decorating a pillow. However, it can be decorated and additionally. Try, for example, stitching the outer contour of the letter pillow. It will not only serve as a decoration for the product, but also hide the mistakes made when sewing.

The edging inserted into the contour also looks unusual. But we recommend using this decoration option only for people who have experience in sewing. But with the help of large loops and beautiful buttons, even beginners can give the letter pillow an original look.

To decorate the pillow, you can use different ribbons. Try to tie a beautiful bow out of them and attach to the product. Decide for yourself what type of decoration to choose - it all depends on your personal preferences!

Lace

Pillows-letters can be called a recent trend. However, there is something to love about such interesting products: they are creative, bright and, of course, useful. Would anyone refuse their own name, nicely laid out in the form of letters on the sofa?

By the way, you can collect and lay out not only your name, but also the names of children, relatives and friends, and even pets. Everything that your imagination and creative mood is much for.

Interested? Then we offer to plunge into the world of needlework and still learn how to sew letter pillows with your own hands.

We prepare materials

In order to create such beauty, you will need quite ordinary and standard materials:

  • directly the fabric from which the pillows will be made;
  • threads;
  • filler;
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • pattern paper;
  • chalk, soap or a simple pencil (to create a pattern);
  • ruler or measuring tape;
  • sewing machine.

Letter pillows must be voluminous, so you need to take several types of fabrics: the main one (for the front and back sides of the future pillow) and the side (for the side parts of the pillow).

As for the colors, the fabric can be very different: plain light or dark, or bright, with colorful patterns and extraordinary prints. Be guided by your own desires, feelings and the interior of the room in which the pillows will be located - you will not be mistaken.

The threads must also match the fabric in color, otherwise something very strange and not quite beautiful will turn out. As a filler material, you can use cotton wool, synthetic winterizer (it has proven itself to be a fairly good filler) or pieces of fabric if you have a lot of them and nothing else is at hand. In this case, get ready for the fact that the pillows will turn out to be somewhat loose or too hard, and in some places they will turn out to be empty.

After all the materials are assembled, and you are charged with a good mood and optimism, you can get to work.

Sequence of work

In order to sew a pillow-letter, you must first draw this letter. We draw a pattern of the selected letter on paper and then transfer two such details to the main fabric, of course, in a mirror image. If you are not good at drawing, then just print the letter of the required size, cut it out and also transfer it to the fabric. Do not forget about seam allowances either - 0.7 cm or 1 cm is enough.

From another fabric, you need to cut strips for the side of the letter. The length of such a strip is the diameter of the future letter (it is better to make it longer, the rest can always be cut off), but the width is calculated using the following formula: letter width + two seam allowances.

After the fabric has been cut, you can begin to assemble the parts together. To begin with, it is worth sewing that same side strip to the front of the letter. You can do this with threads (basting), or you can use pins for chipping. In the outer corners, you need to carefully cut the side fabric, in the inner corners - the main one. Don't forget about stitching details.

If the selected letter contains a hole (O, A, P, Z), then the side strip of fabric will need to be sewn to the edge of this hole. If the letter does not have a hole, we begin to sew on the back of the letter (again we use pins, cut the corners and grind the details). We sew everything on a typewriter, carefully and slowly.

After this business is finished, the letter can be turned out. Next up is the filling process. This should be done carefully: the filler should be in all parts of the letter, especially in the farthest corners.

After the pillow has turned into a large, soft and voluminous thing, the hole left to fill must be sewn up with blind stitches. The final stage is steaming the resulting pillow. The best way to do this is with a steam iron. For a long, long time, until the letter takes on a marketable appearance.

Ready! If you did everything right, then you have a bright, soft and very cute pillow letter.
