How to install a door closer correctly. Do-it-yourself door closer installation methods. Standard scheme for installing a door closer

A metal front door is a guarantee of security.

But its negative qualities include a lot of weight, and as a result, excess noise when closing.

To smooth out this nuance, there are mechanisms, the installation of which is available to anyone who has a screwdriver in their hands.

So how to install on a metal door? This is not difficult. Patience, a tool and a little ingenuity will help with this.

A door closer is a mechanism that in most cases works according to the old principle of a grandmother's spring on a door.

But thanks to the development of technology, it was finalized.

But not everything is so simple. Today there are many types of mechanisms that have different parameters of use.

Which are individual for everyone. Depending on the scheme of the force supply to the spring, the closers are divided into devices with an internal hydraulic circuit and rack and pinion force supply and devices with a cam principle of action.

If we consider the method of fastening, then they are presented as overhead and hidden. In turn, overhead door closers are divided into two types:

  • Devices with an articulated (link) rod, consisting of two knees.
  • Slider system devices - with a sliding channel.

When choosing a device, you need to take into account the characteristics of the door. Its weight and width. There is a certain scale according to which the mechanism is selected, it is approved by the European standard. The door closers have 7 sizes, they are designed for door weight from 20-160 kg and for door leaf width from 750-1600 mm.

Scale for choosing a closer

Closer size

Door width, mm

Door weight, kg

When choosing a mechanism, you need to remember the following:

  • The maximum indicator of the weight or width of the door is the most important when choosing.
  • Installing a mechanism with underestimated performance will quickly damage it.
  • Overestimation of the norms will entail difficulties in closing and opening.
  • If the indicators of weight or width are more than indicated in the table, then two mechanisms are used.
  • Not all door closers can be used outdoors.
  • Consider the features in which the mechanism will be used. Perhaps a slow close function, latch, or something else will be needed. Then the closer must have such characteristics.

Studying the properties and quality of the device when purchasing helps to avoid unnecessary expenses and the correct operation of the device for many years.

Preparing for installation

The success of the entire procedure as a whole depends on this stage. If, after the purchase, the question arises of how to install a door closer on a metal door with your own hands and not use the expensive services of a master for this, first of all look into the box and find instructions and an exact drawing of the device in it. All existing door closer models are equipped with these tips.

The template indicates the possibilities of fastening to the left and right, opening towards itself and inward. But if, for some reason, it was not in the box, then the main thing is to remember: if the door opens outward, then the main mechanism is attached to the box, and the element with levers is attached to it. And if inside, then vice versa.

The adjusting screws on the mechanism are located opposite the hinges of the door structure. Using the example, all placement methods are drawn and the desired position of the holes for fixing is indicated:

  • The first stage is to check the equipment according to the instructions, then prepare the tool (screwdriver, drill, drill, screwdriver, hammer, and others).
  • In order for all the drilled holes to coincide with those on the closer and for a clear placement of the device as in the diagram, a marking stage is required.
  • A template for placing the closer is fixed to the adhesive tape. And in place of future holes, an electric drill is drilled, in order to achieve minimum errors, a core is used, which makes recesses in the door leaf. It is important to keep in mind the size of the drill, which must be matched to the diameter of the holes and fasteners. To be sure that the selected drill is correct, you can drill holes on an auxiliary piece of metal and try to screw the fasteners suggested by the manufacturer into it. If the diameter is not observed, the screw may not enter or, on the contrary, fall out, which will lead to additional difficulties during installation.

Mounting

After preparing the components, tools and holes, you can proceed to the penultimate part - installation. The instruction will help to do everything correctly again:

  • The door closer body must be fixed with screws on the prepared surface (door or slope).
  • The lever system must fit into the protrusion on the bottom of the main mechanism body and be secured with a screw.
  • The connection of the lever and the rod - this process, like everything before it, is not difficult: both elements are connected, and a pressing force is exerted on them. A click is made to confirm successful alignment. But the main feature is their location in relation to. This significantly affects the speed of closing the door structure at the last stage.
  • The ability to change the position is due to two separate parts of the link, which can be adjusted in length. The first part is represented by a long threaded rail. The rotation of this part causes a change in length.
  • If you need the usual soft finishing, place the thrust at an angle of ninety degrees to the plane of the door. This is achieved by reducing its size.
  • The last force to close the door ("latching") must be strong enough to, for example, overcome the resistance of the latch or door catch. By lengthening the rod, the lever is placed perpendicular to the door structure.
  • After obtaining the required parameters, the levers are fixed.
  • The final touch is the snapping of the decorative panel over the main mechanism.

How to install a door closer on a metal door from the outside

The installation technology is the same as inside. In this case, it is not the conditions of installation that are important, but the very operation on the street. Only frost-resistant models are suitable for this. But even in them, under the influence of subzero temperatures, the oil in the hydraulic system can thicken.

And this will reduce the functional qualities of the door structure. In addition, the action of precipitation destroys all elements of the closer. Therefore, if there is no way to protect it from influences or mount it indoors, then it is better to completely abandon it.

If any of the presented schemes is not suitable for installation, then non-standard mounting methods are used, which will not harm the work of the closer at all:

  • Due to the peculiarity of the door frame, it may be necessary to use a building corner. It is installed horizontally with self-tapping screws. The lever structure is fixed from the inside.
  • The main mechanism is installed on the building corner, in the area of the upper slope of the box. The lever attaches to the door plane.
  • A specially prepared block or plate is attached to the door. They should be over a flat surface. The main mechanism is fixed to this device. The lever is attached to the box.
  • An auxiliary device in the form of a plate is attached to the lower part of the slope, and a closer is placed on it. And the lever is fixed on.
  • If the slope is not large enough, it can be enlarged using a plate. A system of levers is attached to it. And the mechanism itself is installed on the door according to an already known scheme.

This is a slightly complicated installation method. It is necessary in cases where the features of the door or slopes do not allow standard installation. This requires a little experience, and if this is not the case, then it is better to ask the master for help.

Installing a door closer on metal doors is not a difficult task that even a teenager can do. But there are times when additional skills are needed for installation. There are two options here. Do it by trial and error or see a specialist.

Adjustment

The closer installation process is complete. And for the correct service, it remains only to adjust the device. The instructions have a detailed paragraph on how to complete this activity.

As mentioned above, the adjusting screws should be positioned against the hinge of the door structure. There are usually two of them. Each of them has its own function. The first is responsible for the speed of movement of the closing structure, and the second is responsible for the last stage, the closing period, the so-called "closing".

Turn one or both screws clockwise to increase the desired function. When unscrewing the adjusting screws, you need to be careful, if this is done excessively, then the internal oil will flow out of the device. To decrease - in the opposite direction. Some mechanisms may have additional adjusting elements. For example, as with a latch or deliberate deceleration. Of the adjustment tools, you will need a screwdriver, with which the fasteners are rotated until the required qualities are obtained.

At the moment of temperature, humidity, or when parts of the mechanism are erased (wear is inevitable), additional adjustment must be made. Because the closer may not perform its functions. This does not happen often, up to twice a year. The procedure is not complicated and will take up to ten minutes.

The situation is different with devices that are installed on the street. With a constant drop in the oil level (this is due to the temperature difference) and exposure to snow, water, sun rays, the closer needs to be adjusted to work much more often. Up to 1 time per season. Devices like a visor or gutter will help to reduce the negative impact of the environment on the closer.

Adjustment is necessary during use and after installing the closer. Instrument functions may not function properly without it.

Door closer rules

Violation of the operating conditions always leads to rapid wear and damage to the mechanism. To avoid this, it is important to remember the following:

  • The maximum opening quickly renders the door closer unusable. Some devices (slider) have a limiter, and those that do not need shock absorbers. They are wall or floor mounted.
  • If the doorway is to be open for a long time, then it is necessary to disconnect the lever system from the main mechanism, and then return everything to its original place. There is no need to support the door with something or fix it with a rope. The closer will not last long. For this, there are models with a built-in latch. Their working principle is simple. When the door opens up to a certain point, it remains open; if it is time to close it, it must be taken to the side.
  • Damage to the internal device occurs during the forced closing of the doors
  • Lubricating the joints and levers once a year will prolong the life of the mechanism
  • If the device is not located indoors, it must be protected from environmental influences (sun, rain). It is obligatory to correct the work twice a year when changing the season.
  • Correct installation, absence of errors in the placement of loops and other indicators will help the correct performance of functions by the device.
  • Once every few years, a complete oil change in the closer is required. For structures that are used outdoors at least once a year.
  • Children are frequent provocateurs of door closers breakdowns because of their love to "ride" on doors. Additional load and displacement of the center of gravity bring irreparable damage to the mechanism.

The minimum service life of the device is indicated in the warranty provided by the manufacturer for his product. But in order for this period to increase several times, then additional care is needed for the closer.

Installation of a door closer is presented in the video:

Despite the fact that most modern door closers are designed in such a way that their installation is reduced to a minimum of steps and actions, it is often necessary to deal with poor-quality implementation of this task. Not showing due attention to the study of the instructions, not too experienced craftsmen fall into a mess: the closer either presses the door too weakly, or, on the contrary, is very tight.

The result is the discomfort that everyone who walks through the door encounters, and sometimes a decrease in tightness in the form of unpleasant drafts that occur as the doorway is constantly blown by the cold wind.

A high-quality installation of the door closer prolongs the service life of the door and keeps the room warm. Any door closer has a certain set of technical characteristics that should be selected based on the characteristics of the door: more or less universal options exist, but such parameters as the weight and size of the door cannot be ignored.

The signs of a successful installation of the closer can be the smoothness of its opening and closing, the absence of unnecessary efforts when closing, as well as the absence of any sounds during operation. Typical door closer kits consist of hardware, a lever and a corresponding assembly diagram. The instruction, as a rule, is made in such a way that a non-professional can work according to it, only a minimum set of tools is needed.

Types of closers

Closers differ in the specifics of the installation, which allows them to be divided into several basic types, each of which has its own advantages. For any of them, the installation scheme will have certain nuances that are obvious from the design features.

  • Overhead door closers they are usually used in offices: they are designed quite simply, moreover, they have a low price. They are placed under the ceiling and differ in the type of traction: it can be lever, which is most often, and sliding, this is a more expensive option, but also smoother in mechanics.
  • Floor closer- a rarer phenomenon, high price and complexity in installation make the scope of such products limited. The practice of use assumes significant engineering surveys already at the stage of building design. Convenient where it is impossible to drill holes: for example, when working with glass doors.
  • Concealed door closers are even more complex and expensive products with high efficiency and a truly magical effect: since they are installed directly inside the door leaf, they simply cannot be seen. They are used in doors with a thickness of 40 mm.
  • To select a model by weight, there is the European standard EN 1154, tables are available on the Internet. If the door weighs no more than 20 kg, a door closer made according to the EN-1 scheme is quite enough for it. For heavier variants, there are more powerful models up to the EN-7.

    Closer functions

Certain types of door closers have special functions that may be useful for you:

    • Adjustment in two ranges: the first initially sets the basic speed, the second - the speed at the moment of closing, the so-called latch, when you need to apply a little more force to close the door completely, overcoming the friction of the opening.
    • Fixing the position. It is useful if the passage is used, for example, by loaders who carry a large amount of goods through it at a certain period of time: the door is simply fixed open, and then the device is unlocked again.
    • Depreciation. The function allows you to increase traction when opening and closing at certain door positions: at 70 or 90 degrees. Adjustable to your own taste.
    • Installation rules

The first postulate that should be observed during installation is the accuracy of the markup. A crookedly placed door closer threatens to warp the doors over time, as a result, you will have to change the hinges, since the door will simply stop opening and closing normally.

Depending on the depth of the opening and its shape, it can be convenient to install some door closers from the outside, that is, from the side of the door opening, this is often optimal for interior options. A surface-mounted door closer with a lever in the case of a deep opening on the inside can be extremely ineffective. In this case, you will have to think over some kind of recess for the device, in the case of the opposite situation - fix an additional bar.

CLOSER INSTALLATION

Congratulations, you have purchased a NORA-M door closer! Our devices have proven to be of high quality and durable. However, 99% of the smooth operation of the door closer depends on the very first stage - its installation.

How to install and adjust the door closer to automatically close it

How to properly install the door closer on the door with your own hands is explained in the instructions that come with each model. In addition, you can download the same instructions electronically on our website.

Before you start installing the closer, you should decide on some important parameters.

First, stand facing the door on the side where the closer will be located.

If the door opens from itself, the closer is attached to the door frame. If the door opens towards itself, then the closer should be fixed on the door leaf, and the lever - on the door frame.

Consider the fact that if the door leads to the street, then we recommend installing the device indoors so that it is less exposed to the external environment (changes in temperature, humidity, etc.).

Secondly, you should decide on the maximum possible opening angle of the door: 90, 120 or 180 degrees. Please note that different values of the opening angle correspond to different limiting parameters of the door leaf (weight and width).

For the convenience of choosing the opening angle, there is a diagram in the instructions for each door closer, see below (diagram 1 shows an example of the door opening angle from the text of the instructions for the 3S door closer).

DIAGRAM 1 CHOICE OF OPENING ANGLE AND CLOSER POSITION

After that, you need to cut out a full-size template from the instructions, which will help mark the installation site of the closer.

The template must be placed on the closed door according to the diagram below: the opening angle you choose will depend on how far from the door hinges the door closer body is fixed. Attention! Due to changes in air humidity, the template may change its size. Before installation, be sure to compare it with the actual installation dimensions indicated in the instructions.

After you have fixed the template on the door (it is convenient to do this with adhesive tape), you need to drill holes in those places where, according to the template, the closer and the lever will be attached.

You can do this right through the paper - this is exactly the convenience of a full-size installation layout (Figure 1 in the instructions).

FIGURE 1 MARKINGS FOR CLOSER INSTALLATION

Then disassemble the lever into two knees (Figure 2 in the instructions).

FIGURE 2 DISASSEMBLING THE CLOSER ARM

Fasten the closer body on the door or on the box and attach one of the lever bends to it from the top or bottom, depending on where the body is attached (Figure 3 in the instructions).

FIGURE 3

After that, fix the second knee of the lever (on the door or on the door frame).

With the door closed, the angle between this knee of the lever and the curtain should be 90 degrees. Connect the parts of the lever together (Figure 4 in the instructions).

FIGURE 4 CLOSER ARM INSTALLATION

Screw the nut securing the lever to the closer body (Figure 5).

This completes the installation of the door closer.

FIGURE 5 NUT INSTALLATION

After installation, you need to adjust the closer. How to do this is described in detail by the instructions (Figures 6 and 7), as well as the corresponding article on this site.

Installation and installation of a door closer

All door closers are installed according to the same principle, differing only in the installation distances of the "body" and the closer lever from the hinges.

Below we will give you the most detailed algorithm for installing the NOTEDO DC-100 model with illustrations and step-by-step instructions. All NOTEDO door closers are equipped with similar instructions and templates, so based on these instructions you can install any model of our door closers.

How to install a door closer

Standard and Top Installation

Standard installation

Top installation

Here are the most popular installation options, which differ in the location of the closer - on the door leaf or on the door frame.

The above images are templates for installation. Each door closer is equipped with similar templates on a 1: 1 scale, which greatly simplifies installation.

Installing a door closer: a step-by-step guide

We install the NOTEDO DC-100 model on the left door, the type of installation is standard.

Door closer installation rules

  1. You have chosen the right door closer model for the weight of your door
  2. The installation option you have chosen is possible (see.

installation restrictions in the instructions accompanying each closer)

  3. After installation, the closer will not rest on anything, for example, against a wall
  4. The closer and the lever will be installed on a flat surface.

Diy door closers installation algorithm

  • Each door closer is equipped with a 1: 1 scale template (see.

(See image "Standard Installation"). Using the template, select the closer force you need - EN3, EN4 and EN5.
The choice of effort depends on the distance from the hinges to the body of the closer and the maximum opening angle of the door. For our installation we choose the force EN4.

  • Attach the template to the door using tape. Previously, we chose EN4 (middle hinge position), so when attaching the template, make sure that its position matches the door hinges (see.

    image above).

  • Since the scale of the template is 1: 1, then manually adjusting the distances is not necessary - use the template to mark the necessary holes for installing the closer.
  • Take the lever and separate it in two (by unscrewing the screw) as shown in the image above. The rod of the lever with the fastening "shoe" and the thread must be installed on the door frame, while the other part must be attached to the "body" of the closer with a special screw supplied in the delivery set.
Next, using the supplied hardware (screws and screws), install the closer and part of the lever into the previously prepared holes.
  • Next, you need to adjust the length of the bar with the fastening "shoes" so that after connecting the two parts of the lever it is perpendicular to the door leaf.

This can be done by increasing or decreasing the length of the lever. Do not forget to check the selected length of the lever by turning the bar attached to the "body" of the door closer to the bar with the "shoe" - when they are convenient for connection with the screw we unscrewed in step 4, and the lever with the "shoe" after connection will be perpendicular to the door bar, then you have adjusted the bar length correctly.

If the above conditions are met, then connect the parts of the lever.

  • Make sure that the angle between the lever and the door leaf is 90 degrees and that the closer is installed with the adjustment screws to the hinges, and only then proceed with the mandatory adjustment of your door closer.

After adjustment, the door closer is ready for use, but remember that it needs to be serviced, namely:
    - After half a month after installation, check the tightness of the screws and screws
    - Be sure to carry out seasonal adjustment of the "finishing" and "closing" speeds when the temperature changes by 10-15 degrees Celsius
    - Be sure to follow the rules of operation of door closers

  • Parallel installation of door closers

    Parallel installation

when installed in parallel, the efficiency of the closer will be lower.
This type of installation is possible, for example, if during the standard installation the closer rests against the wall when opening the door or a ceiling that is too low prevents the installation of the closer "body" on the door frame.

For this type of installation, you need a bracket (optional).

Individual information on parallel installation can be found in each manual that comes with the door closer.

If you have any difficulties with a parallel installation, we recommend that you contact the specialists.

    Door closer adjustment

The closing sectors (“CLOSE” and “CLOSE”) are controlled by two (2) separate speed adjustment screws, first set the “CLOSE” speed, then the “CLOSE” speed.

ATTENTION: Under no circumstances should the door closer be depressurized by completely unscrewing the adjustment screws!

The "CLOSING" speed is adjusted by turning the screw.

Self-installation and adjustment of the door closer

The "LATCH" speed is adjusted by turning the screw.

    • turning the adjustment screw clockwise decreases the speed,
    • turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise increases the speed.

    1. Find the correct size on the chart, then drill holes in the door or jamb.

Install the original mounting plate on the top jamb.

    3. Install the closer on the door with the adjusting screws from the hinges.

    4. Turning the door closer pivot shaft with a wrench or other lever approximately 45 degrees, install the main lever on the pivot shaft parallel to the door and secure it with screw No. 1.

Connect the bar to the mounting plate. By adjusting the length of the bar, attach it to the main arm with the # 2 screw. (See Fig.)

    6. Place the decorative cap on the opposite part of the door closer's pivot shaft.

    1. The door closer has a self-closing function - don't push the door.
    2.

Screw No. 1 should always be securely tightened.
    3. After half a month, check the tightening screws and screws.
    4. Door closer needs seasonal adjustment.

With a significant change in temperature ambient air be sure to adjust the speeds closing and finishing the door.

What associations does the phrase "ideal door" evoke? Reliable, beautiful, with good heat and sound insulation and ... picky. In order not to slam, to close itself, even a child could open it - all these desires are made a reality by installing a closer on a metal door. It is metal doors that have become widespread for high-traffic rooms and where there are automatic locks. The logic of the choice is obvious - durability, a wide range of prices, increased wear resistance, easy installation.

The prototype of a modern door closer is an ordinary metal spring, which necessarily closed the sash, keeping the heat inside. The payment for the saved heat resource was a crash when the door surface meets the jamb and, as a result, its accelerated wear.

Closer operation in practice

The design consists of two parts: a lever mechanism and a body that protects the mechanism from external influences - a strong spring and a piston compressing it. The force applied to open the door compresses the spring. The gear train and the lever transmits the force of the expanding spring to the door and it closes.

Door closer

The softness of closing, smoothness and uniformity of the stroke is provided by hydraulics. The steel spring is located inside a cylinder filled with oil or water-glycol solution. Due to the damping action of the oil, the spring slowly expands, and the oil flows through the hydraulic voids into the working reservoir. The speed of the leaf movement depends on the oil flow rate. This design is technologically simple and does not require high production costs, which has a positive effect on the consumer value.

Improving the thermal insulation of the room, reducing the penetration of noise, easy operation are the main tasks that the use of a door closer on a metal door solves.

The emergence of a forced closing mechanism is due to the increased requirements for the functions of doors and the materials from which they are made. A heavy armored or stylish glass door can no longer be slammed shut with a spring.

Types of door closers - design and fastening features

For the optimal choice of the type and power of the mechanism, several facts must be taken into account:

  • operating conditions - seasonal temperature drops, impact of precipitation;
  • door weight;
  • additional parameters - side wind, strong draft.

Closer working principle

The designs differ in the type of installation and design features:

The power of the mechanism, what parameters need to be considered

The power or forces developed by the door closers are certified by the European standards DIN EN 1154. The force of the closing torque is a calculated value and takes into account the force of air pressure, the area of the leaf and its width. Closing torque force ranges are divided into 7 power classes, in ascending order. For a heavy door with reinforced protection, only the mechanisms of the highest - class 7 are suitable. For canvases of light weight, mechanisms of a lower class are suitable. Regardless of the weight and windage for the entrance doors, the class of the false mechanism cannot be lower than the 3rd.

When choosing a forced closing device, external factors and average annual temperature fluctuations must be taken into account. So for an entrance door that is constantly exposed to a side wind or the effect of an internal air flow, a higher class will be required than the calculation by the weight and width of the leaf. Long-term and comfortable operation of the door, the dimensions and weight of which belong to different classes, is possible when purchasing a structure according to high-class parameters.

Door with a closer

It would be a mistake to think that a high-grade design automatically increases service life and improves quality. A thin canvas and a box made of lightweight material are not designed for too powerful closers. Excessive weight creates additional load on the hinge, makes it difficult to open it, which reduces the life of the hinge.

The optimal choice of the device assumes a 5-10 degree margin of average seasonal temperatures. A sharp fluctuation in daily temperature can firmly close doors, and in a literal sense.

The procedure for installing the closer on a metal door

With all the apparent complexity, the work of attaching an overhead door closer with your own hands is quite accessible to people with confident technical skills. The assembly and fastening scheme of the mechanism requires literal execution, which will allow the mechanism to be correctly fastened and adjusted. To work, you need a basic set of tools - a level, drill, drills and a screwdriver. The package with the device contains a housing, adjustable link arm, mountings and an assembly diagram for a specific mechanism.

Installation is carried out both on a moving plane and on a box, both outside the room and inside it. The most common mounting option is the option of the internal arrangement of the mechanism with fixation in the opening - seasonal temperature drops and precipitation make this method the most optimal.

Manufacturers make the assembly template in full size, which allows you to mount the device simply and without flaws. The scheme is attached with transparent tape to the installation site, marking is made. Holes of the required size are made in the indicated places. Particular attention should be paid to the location of the adjusting screws, they can be located both in the direction of the hinges and in the direction of the passage. The body is fastened to the metal sheet with screws.

The link bar consists of two elements, they are connected to each other by a thread. The first is the main lever attached to the pivot axis of the body. The second part, adjustable in length, is attached to the main arm, perpendicular to the canvas. The work on fastening the mechanism has been completed, but the installation of the structure on a metal plane will be incomplete without adjusting it.

The procedure for adjusting the closer is all about the screws

Accurate and accurate assembly of the structure in compliance with the geometry of the installation is sufficient for the functioning of the lock, but the opening angle of the door and the speed of its closing must be adjusted immediately after fastening, and, in the future, with seasonal temperature changes. Our instruction recommends making adjustments in spring and autumn, this is necessary due to design features - the fluid in which the spring is located thickens with a decrease in temperature and reduces the speed of closing the door.

There are only 2 adjusting screws, they are located in the case and can be covered with a decorative panel or located at the end facing the hinges. Manufacturers strongly advise against unscrewing them completely.

The first screw, as it is indicated, is responsible for the opening angle of the door. There are 2 options - the door opens 90 degrees or 180. After selecting the position, the adjusting screw must be fully tightened.

The second screw, which is responsible for the speed of closing the door, is characterized by increased sensitivity and to start adjusting, you need to determine the desired speed. The very process of moving the canvas to the box consists of two stages - the movement of the door from the maximum open state to an angle of 15 degrees and the final closing to trigger the automatic shutter. With fine adjustment of the smooth running, there are no pauses or jerks between the first and second stages. Turning the second screw clockwise increases the closing speed, counterclockwise decreases it.

Correct installation of the closer on a metal door and its further adjustment allows them to be used for a long time.

More and more often, a door closer of various designs is installed on the entrance and interior doors. This is a very useful tool. It allows you to control the time and strength of the door closing. This makes it possible to avoid the appearance of drafts, rapid loss of heat in the room. In addition to the listed functions, it can reduce the load on the entire system. This is especially important for hinges. They last longer with the presented mechanism. Closing is fast and smooth.

How to install a door closer? The advice of experienced craftsmen will help you. Even doing such a job for the first time, almost anyone can do it well. In this case, it is necessary to be guided by the manufacturer's recommendations and instructions. In this case, it will not be difficult to mount the system on the door and adjust it.

The principle of the device

A special type of design allows you to perform all the functions that modern door closers have. Overhead mechanisms are most often installed on a plastic door or metal, wooden varieties of them.

The system has a spring inside, which is compressed when the sash is opened. This allows it to accumulate energy sufficient for subsequent closure.

The second important element is the oil filler. He is responsible for the smooth movement of the sash. Oil flows through a special duct system from one chamber to another. The smoothness of the closing depends on its viscosity.

The presented characteristics can be adjusted. Therefore, installing a closer requires certain knowledge.

Top closer type

There are 3 main types of door closers in total. The most famous of these is the top (or overhead) mechanism. It is he who is most often installed on a variety of types of doors.

Transfers force to the spring. This is the most affordable and easy-to-install door closer. Its price is quite small. Therefore, this mechanism is very popular.

This group includes gear and sliding arm door closers. In the first case, the force is transmitted to the lever by gears with a font or a piston. They are most often installed on doors. Slide rail door closers are not yet widely used. They are used in a fairly limited area.

Floor varieties

If much attention is paid to interior design, then most often the choice falls on floor types of closers. They are designed at the stage of repair planning. Installing this type of door closer is a little more complicated.

The fact is that this mechanism cannot be installed on a door with hinges. The closer in this case is itself a system on which the canvas is installed. A recess is made on the floor, into which the closer is mounted. The second part of the mechanism is fixed at the same level on the ceiling.

They plan to install such hinge closers when arranging doors without a box. Most often they can be found in shopping centers. Floor closers make a limit on the weight of the door. They are not suitable for curtains that weigh more than 300 kg. Their installation requires certain skills. If the lower and upper hinges are not on the same level, the mechanism will fail very quickly.

Hidden door closers

Another type of the presented mechanisms are hidden closers. They can be hinged or cut into the door leaf. In the first case, the installation does not differ from the installation of awnings. But in the second approach, the procedure will be somewhat more complicated.

Studying how to install a door closer, it is necessary to consider in more detail the installation of such a system. It is quite possible to do it yourself. For this, places are selected for cutting 2 grooves. One of them is most often located at the upper end of the canvas. The second groove cuts into the top of the door frame.

Installation is carried out using a drill. When choosing this type of mechanism, you should take into account the width of the full opening of the door. The presented varieties are also in demand.

Closer choice

In order for the installation and configuration of the mechanism to be performed correctly, it is required to carefully approach the process of choosing a door closer class. There are 7 types of mechanisms in total. This approach takes into account the weight of the door. The heavier it is, the higher class of the device you need to purchase. For example, an entrance door closer, which weighs 105 kg, must be of the 6th class. The device of the 5th group simply will not withstand such a load. But taking the mechanism with a margin is also not worth it. It will take a lot of effort to open such a door.

Also, the class of the mechanism depends on the size of the canvas. For example, if the sash in both doors weighs the same, but they differ in width, and this must be taken into account. For a larger door leaf, high-quality door closers are required. A mechanism is most often chosen for a plastic door, taking into account this indicator. After all, they can weigh a little, but they have significant dimensions.

Studying the question of how to install a door closer on a door with your own hands, you need to heed the advice of experienced craftsmen. They recommend not to install floor and hidden types of mechanisms without at least minimal experience in performing such work. It requires a certain degree of precision.

Therefore, overhead models of mechanisms are most often installed on their own. Today, you can choose a closer of this type for almost any door.

Experts recommend paying attention to the fasteners. They are often included in the package. Better to purchase them separately. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions. It schematically shows the installation process and explains how to install and operate the device.

Step-by-step installation instructions

Having chosen the correct class of the closer and the place of its installation (depending on the opening and type of sashes), you can proceed with the installation.

To understand how to install a door closer, you need to read the instructions. The life-size diagram is applied to the door and jamb. Further, the places for drilling are indicated. The features of the material are taken into account.

Using special equipment, holes are drilled with a diameter corresponding to the fasteners. Further, with their help, the lever elements are attached to the canvas and the jamb.

The system is then connected together. The lever knee should be at a 90º angle. If this is not the case, the elements of the mechanism are adjusted.

Adjustment

How to adjust the closer, the instructions will help you figure it out. Surface models usually have 2 screws. The first one controls the closing speed, and the second one controls the closing force.

It is necessary to turn the screws carefully, literally no more than half a turn. If you unscrew them, the device will be damaged. Turning the screw clockwise slows down the movement, and in the opposite direction accelerates it.

Some models have additional screws. They are used if the mechanism has more than one function. It is necessary to adjust the closers periodically. If it is mounted on a street door, this must be done 2 times a year. Indoors, the frequency of this action depends on the use of the door.

When using such a system, all manufacturer's requirements must be met. The durability of the device depends on this.
