It is very nice to relax by your own fireplace! For the most convenient use of it, use special accessories for fireplaces. What they are, what is really worth buying, and what you can do without, we will tell you in this article.

The necessary accessories for the owner of the fireplace include the following:

  • care accessories. These include a scoop and a soot whisk, a poker, tongs for logs;
  • the protective screen is at the same time a protection against flying sparks and a beautiful element of the interior of the room;

  • a firewood basket is useful to reduce the amount of garbage in the apartment due to their use;

  • servitor;
  • gloves;

  • buckets for ash and coal.

They are best bought immediately after the purchase or installation of the fireplace, but before its first operation.

Note: Fireplace accessories can be replaced with some improvised means, it will not be very convenient.

A fireplace poker allows you to turn over firewood that has not completely burned out. She stirs smoldering coals.

The poker usually looks like a square or round metal rod. Its handle is made in the form of a ring for easy hanging at a time when it is not in use. It happens that the poker handle is made with holes for each finger or made of wood, ceramics or bone with smooth curves for the convenience of the hand.

Fireplace tongs

You will need tongs to toss the charcoal. They keep your hands clean. Very convenient to use.

Forceps can be made in a classic form or under another object (scissors, tweezers, etc.).

You will need a basket for the convenience of placing firewood for 1-2 kindling, reducing debris from their use and storage, as well as for the completeness of the fireplace ensemble. You can find this item under the name of woodpile or firewood. Don't let them confuse you - they are one and the same.

The basket can be made of metal or wicker. Consider the features of the material when you place it near the fireplace.

protective screen

The protective screen is also called a chimney grid or grate. The names may be different, but the purpose of their use is the same - to protect the room from flying sparks. Of course, if your fireplace is a closed type, then you don't need a mesh.

The protective screen is also put as an additional accessory for decorating the room. They are even used with electronic fireplaces!

The protective grille is usually made of special glass or fine metal mesh. Additional forged elements give it more charm and beauty. They can be in the form of a coat of arms, a picture, a screen.

Sometimes doors are used instead of a protective screen. Their main function is the same, but installation requires special mounts (canopies). To install the protective screen, no additional devices are needed. It is very easy and fast to put even a child.

A servitor or stand for fireplace accessories can be a tall round container with decorative elements or a rack with hooks. They are rarely bought separately, most often together with a set of fireplace accessories. Occasionally, hooks are made on the side of the fireplace, especially for tongs, pokers, scoops and panicles.

Scoop and whisk

You will need a scoop and a whisk for cleaning the ashes from the fireplace after using it quite often, so you should not save on them. It is better to purchase immediately these accessories of attractive appearance in good quality.

Buckets for ash and coal

Of course, if you have an ordinary steel bucket, then you can limit yourself to cleaning up the ashes from the fireplace after its operation or storing coal. But if you have a bucket in plain sight, then it is better to purchase something special, with a beautiful design. You can have two buckets: one for coals if you use them regularly, and the other for cleaning.

Gloves

You will need gloves to protect your hands while cleaning and relighting the fireplace. Don't skimp on this accessory as spark burns can cause serious damage and permanent damage.

Additional accessories

Additional accessories that are used by owners of fireplaces include the following items:

  • a special vacuum cleaner for cleaning soot residues;
  • a woodpile bag, a woodcutter trolley, a special box or basket for carrying firewood and coal;
  • fur;
  • match stand.

Bellows for lighting a fireplace

These items and fixtures are not required to be purchased and the owner of the fireplace may well do without them. But with them, the use of the fireplace becomes more convenient.

Fireplace vacuum cleaner

A vacuum cleaner designed specifically for removing soot from a fireplace is very convenient to use. Its principle of operation is the same as that of your household vacuum cleaner, but the materials for manufacturing and appearance are different. Vacuum cleaners for fireplaces have increased strength, as they are made of materials that can withstand temperatures up to 50 0, have high suction power and a fairly capacious container (about 20 liters on average).

There are also less advanced models designed for cleaning cooled ash. In this case, you will have to wait long enough to start cleaning.

Attention! The ash cleaner must be cleaned quickly. It is advisable that no more than 24 hours pass after cleaning.

Woodpile bag or woodcutter cart

These accessories, as well as a special basket or box for carrying logs and coal, will be required if your warehouse with them is quite far from the fireplace itself and it will be very inconvenient and difficult to carry logs in your hands.

Furs

Furs will be useful for you to quickly kindle the fireplace. The appearance of this accessory is the best fit for a room with a fireplace, so do not hide them, but put them or put them in a conspicuous place.

The match stand is more decorative than a really necessary accessory. You can buy matches in beautiful packaging so that they do not stand out from the interior of the room.

Materials for making accessories

All fireplace accessories are made of special materials that are highly resistant to heat and fire. Most often, various metal alloys (cast iron, steel) and heat-resistant glass are used for this. Additionally, they are covered with a special protective layer for better resistance to mechanical damage and high temperatures.

Metal fireplace set

For attractiveness and uniform style of fireplace sets, items in it are usually additionally partially painted in some color. The paint is usually located on the handles of accessories, so it almost never comes into contact with fire and heat. However, special heat-resistant paints are used. Most often painted in gold or red. Any other colors can be used according to customer requirements.

Accessory sets

Fireplace accessories are sold in sets. Of course, you can buy all the accessories separately, but it will not be so convenient. Buying a fireplace kit saves time and money. In addition, it makes their use more convenient due to the presence of a servitor stand or a bucket for them in the kit. All elements of the sets are usually forged and made in the same style, so they are the best fit as a decoration for your interior.

Fireplace accessories

The set for fireplaces includes the following items as standard:

  • poker;
  • scoop;
  • brush;
  • forceps;
  • stand.

It is best to buy ready-made fireplace sets along with a protective net and a log basket to match them. Then you will get a solid and beautiful unique ensemble that will make the fireplace area a complete work of art.

Note: Forged accessories for fireplaces are not only a decorative decoration of the room, but also your convenience and safety during its operation.

Only you decide what exactly you should buy and use.

Fireplace accessories

This applies fully to any forge tool. It should be remembered that the tool is the face of the master. In the old days, there was always an opinion that a blacksmith's tool could be used to determine how good this master was or how bad. In addition, the result of the work depends on the convenience and quality of the tool.

To maintain the hearth of a forge, you must have a coal shovel, a poker, a pike or a crowbar to break through baked coals, a whisk for cleaning the hearth from fine slag and coal dust, tongs for coal, etc. All this can be made independently, but before how to forge a poker, for example, however, like any other tool, it is necessary to select the appropriate material.

Video

Here is a video of forging a simple poker, the purpose of the video is to show the manufacturing process. Since there is nothing artistic in this product, the bar is taken from corrugated fittings.

What length to take the workpiece

Focus on the source of fire: a forge, a fireplace, a stove for which you are making a poker. For example, if it is an oven. Take a tape measure and stretch it to the far wall of the oven, add some distance to the heat of the oven. Let's say 20 centimeters. Add another 10 cm to the lower end and 15-20 to the handle, depending on which handle is planned.

This is how you get the size of the workpiece.

The following video shows, among other things, forging a poker, the whole process is posted.

Making a poker

The poker can be made from rods of round section with a diameter of 12-14 mm or rods of any other section of similar dimensions. The process of making a poker from a 12mm bar is as follows:

  • we stretch one end of the round blank onto a rectangle and make a small curl at its end;
  • then we bend with a fork and form a handle;
  • using similar operations, we form a hook (working part), stretch the second end onto the rectangle, form a curl at the end (you can not do a curl) and bend it on a fork. The poker for earthing up and raking up coal in the process of burning and cleaning from the slag of the hearth for convenience should have a wider working end, for which it must be forged wider;
  • in order to make the poker look more elegant, you can make a twist on the middle part of the rod, for which you need to stretch the central part of the handle to a rectangle, and then with the help of a metalwork or blacksmith's vice we twist using the hook of the poker as a lever.

After making the poker, it must be properly straightened, sharp corners sanded and blued. Burnishing gives the product a finished look and protects against rust. For bluing, the poker must be evenly heated to a temperature of about 300-500 degrees Celsius and then lowered into a tank with engine oil (it can be used). If burnishing does not work out the first time, as it should, then the operation can be repeated. After bluing, the poker is thoroughly wiped with a rag.

The photo below shows a poker made on a homemade anvil from a rail (see the video of the anvil on), heated on wood and flexible on a cold fork.

Since there was no rod of suitable length, it had to be made from two pieces of the rod, with further welding.

Scoop - 264 rubles.

Poker - 175 rubles.

A good outdoor recreation depends on every little thing. The scoop is necessary when cooking on the coals of a barbecue or a fire, it will also come in handy when cleaning from ashes, chips or wood chips.

A standard forged poker or a forged poker is, as a rule, a thick strip or a metal rod with a bent end, and is a tool for stirring coals or firewood in a hearth, in a stove, in a fireplace, in. Convenient forged poker can have a different shape. The usual standard form of the poker is in the form of the letter G.

The standard poker size is usually 400mm - 750mm. It is not advisable to make the size of the poker less than 400 mm, since the heat from the fire will burn the hand. And when the size of the poker is more than 750 mm, it is not very convenient to use it when mixing coal or firewood in the barbecue. A convenient poker for barbecue should not be very long and massive. The correct stove poker should be longer and lighter. And a beautiful fireplace poker can be massive and medium in size, as it performs, along with practical tasks, an aesthetic function.

The cottage brazier brought to your attention is copied from the drawings of several types of braziers. In my opinion, it successfully combines the best elements of their various types.

For the convenience of cooking kebabs, shells from a pipe about 20 millimeters long are welded on the bottom of the brazier. Having driven 4 pins from reinforcement or wire rod into the ground with a diameter of 16 or 18 millimeters and a length of about 1 meter, you can set the brazier to the optimal height of an average human height. The pins will go into the shells and now the brazier will not fall.

For better combustion of firewood and air access to the coals from the sides of the brazier, it is necessary to drill holes with a diameter of at least 14 millimeters. Ten on each side will be enough.

To remove burnt coals and ash from the end of the brazier, a gap of 100 by 400 millimeters is provided.

Metal swing welded from pipes; can be welded from profile pipes with a minimum cross section of 40 mm / 40 mm.

If the barbecue is cooked on skewers, then they are simply placed on the side walls of the barbecue.

If the kebab is cooked on a barbecue grill, then a standard grate sold in stores is installed in a slot made on the side wall. The grill rests on one side on the slot, and on the other side on the corner welded inside the brazier.

When the firewood has burned out and the coals are in the right condition for cooking barbecue, the grill with pieces of meat is installed in the barbecue and covered with a lid on top. With its help, the cooking process is significantly reduced in time.

The process of making charcoal from firewood begins with the kindling of torches, which are placed under an impromptu chimney. Firewood is loaded from above this pipe. Due to the draft of the air, the logs burn faster and turn into coals necessary for cooking barbecue. It remains only to move these coals with a poker to the place above which the skewers or grate are located.

Metal parts of the brazier should not be painted. Even the highly heat-resistant lacquer zapon will not withstand the temperature regime of the brazier.

Once again I want to remind you that the thicker the metal from which the brazier is made, the more durable your structure will be. But everything is within reason. A thickness of three to five millimeters is what you need!

If you want to ennoble your brazier even more, then it can be framed with boulders on three sides, leaving a place in front under the brazier for firewood or the necessary tools for servicing the brazier.

The sequence of actions for lining with boulders is as follows.

First of all, remove the sod at the location of the barbecue. Prepare a flat area. Pour a layer of sand ten centimeters thick. You tamp.

Lay paving slabs in a pattern and size to your liking.

The next step is two options.

Option one. You make formwork under the barbecue, preferably from plywood.

Then install a welded mesh with a wire diameter of three millimeters. Fasten everything with knitting wire.

Option two. Without formwork. It is simpler, but the quality is somewhat worse. That is, you install the same welded mesh, also knit it with knitting wire. And then on this mesh you put a welded mesh with the smallest cells that you can buy in a store. Fasten it.

After that, throw a pre-prepared solution of cement with sand in a ratio of 1 to 3 onto the grid with a trowel (1 part of cement and three parts of sand, but not mountain sand, but river sand). The consistency of the solution should not be creamy, but thicker. I mean, don't overfill the water!

Now start laying boulders. At the bottom they should be large, and the higher they should become smaller. Then the proportions look better. Even guests - aesthetes will admire your work of art.

For these operations, do not be too lazy to get rubber gloves, otherwise the solution will corrode your hands. And who needs it? Wet rags and brushes made from hard bristles or its substitute will also come in handy here. It's not a fast thing. A friend of mine did this for a week. But Zurab Tsereteli is resting with his creativity. There is no place like this nearby.

Each boulder is surrounded on all sides with a solution and carefully rubbed with brushes and wet rags. Otherwise, the stains from the solution will dry out and hide all the beauty of the boulders.

Therefore, if you make one wall of the base of the barbecue in a day, you are a leader! As they used to say - a Stakhanovite.

When working with cement mortar, spread a film on paving slabs, which can then be removed along with debris and mortar residue.

Some owners of cottages, after they make a brazier with all the charms described above, want to have a canopy over it. What if it rains, how then to cook barbecue?

We will not describe in detail how to make a canopy, this is a separate topic, it can still be considered later. As for the brazier, after the construction of a canopy, smoke can complicate your life. To prevent this from happening, you will have to additionally weld the chimney pipe. Then the smoke will be above the roof of the canopy, and not under it.

The inconvenience in this case may lie in the fact that every time you need to add firewood, you have to remove the pipe. To eliminate the inconvenience, it is possible to make a hole for laying firewood from the end of the brazier, at the base of the bell of the brazier. But it must be done in such a way that the firewood can fit into it along the length. And additionally make a door (damper) so that the smoke does not pop through the hole.

How many difficulties at once! To avoid them, you will have to simply throw firewood not through the socket, but from the side of the barbecue itself, or do not weld the trapezoidal sheet under the index "A" (see the figure).

In addition to the lid and pipe, the barbecue kit should also include items such as a poker, a scoop, a bucket for the remains of fine coals and ashes. I’m not talking about an ax, canvas mittens, you yourself know that you can’t do without them and logs of firewood forty centimeters long.

For many of us, cozy gatherings in nature are associated with a fire and a fragrant barbecue. The process of cooking meat on hot coals creates a spiritual, but at the same time solemn atmosphere. A high-quality brazier facilitates the process of preparing a delicious dish.

For the manufacture of this structure, several types of material are used. Basically it is: brick or metal. How to make a barbecue with your own hands? You will find the answer to this question in our article. Here are detailed diagrams and drawings of improvised structures.

Model project

Before you start making a brazier, you need to decide what material this product will be made of. Experienced craftsmen offer to make an additional system of protection against climatic conditions.

A cozy gazebo with a barbecue in the countryside adds a piece of warmth and comfort in the process of friendly gatherings. Here you can also hide from rain, wind and the scorching sun. A partially open veranda or terrace is ideal for solving this problem.

More experienced craftsmen prefer complex barbecue instructions. Here, in addition to barbecue, you can bake bread, cook food and much more. The standard parameters of such structures are:

  • height 1.5m;
  • width 1.6 m;
  • the depth of the furnace is from 0.6 to 0.8 m.

Before proceeding with the construction of such a structure, it is necessary to first make a strip foundation. There may be additional niches and a spacious storage system.

Making a brick brazier with your own hands is quite simple. The first step is to draw up a detailed project. Next, we proceed to the arrangement of the zero base. The size of the foundation must correspond to the dimensions of the structure.

If the fire zone will be located on the street, then it is not recommended to make complex structures here. The optimal solution would be parameters of 0.5 x 0.8 m. Here you can place from 5 to 10 skewers with meat.

There are hundreds of drawings of barbecues on the Internet, each of which has its own characteristics and appearance. Designs differ in sweat material type and dimensions.

Metal barbecue

Particularly popular are products made of iron. They are distinguished by their durability and aesthetic appearance.

As a rule, they represent a complex two-tiered composition. Hot coals are located in the upper part, and an ash cleaning system is located in the lower part.

A simpler option is a brazier from a balloon. The finished product is roomy and spacious. In addition to barbecue, here you can cook vegetables and a lot of all kinds of food. On one side of the cylinder, thin rods are welded using an electric welding machine. In the future, they will act as a grill.

For the construction of a metal barbecue, we need the following materials and equipment:

  • Bulgarian;
  • thin metal rods;
  • semi-automatic welding;
  • electrodes;
  • metal supports;
  • powder paint;
  • sprayer for pigment formulations.

The process of manufacturing an iron brazier is divided into several stages:

  • On the surface of the barrel or cylinder, we mark the future hole.
  • Next, along the contour, we begin to cut out the upper part of the metal base. On the sides we make shallow notches. Here, in the future, skewers with meat will be located.
  • To make a cover on the cut off part, we fasten the hinges. Next, we fix the other end of the mechanism on the side of the barbecue. This will help to freely open and close the structure at the time of operation.
  • At the bottom, we begin to mount the support legs. The height of the base is from 0.5 to 1 m.
  • When the product is almost assembled, you can proceed to the manufacture of the grill. To do this, we weld thin metal rods to one of the side parts of the cylinder.
  • We make a handle on the lid. The thicker the metal, the less it heats up.
  • The finished product is covered with black powder paint. During operation, it does not fade and does not emit harmful toxic compounds. The photo of the brazier captures the entire sequence of the workflow.
