DIY wooden cornice. Wooden curtain rod for curtains: options and varieties How to make a wooden curtain rod by hand

Having only a jigsaw and a drill from tools, and from materials - a spruce board and a rake handle, you can make a beautiful cornice for a country window.

Once my mother-in-law bought a new rake handle, but it turned out to be too thick and short. And at that time I decided to make a cornice for a window on the second floor of the dacha. Of course, you can say that the curtain rod is easier to buy. But when, after the construction of a summer cottage, you have a large amount of leftover materials, then your hands just itch to put them into action.

We start making the ceiling cornice

Having measured the width of the window (110 cm), as well as the length (130 cm) and diameter (30 mm) of the handle, he set to work. The front side of the cornice (the blank of the front board) and the sidewalls were cut from a purely planed spruce board 20 mm thick and 140 mm wide. I chose the length of the front board to be equal to the length of the round handle - 1300 mm.

The sides were made in a square shape - 140 x 140 mm. The holes in the sidewalls for the handle were drilled with a 032 mm hole saw so that the 30-mm handle could enter them freely and be fixed with screws. In the trailing edges of the sidewalls, I cut out recesses for the heads of the fastening hooks with a knife and screwed on metal hangers.

The facade board of the cornice was decorated with semicircular cutouts. All details of the cornice were carefully processed with sandpaper before varnishing and assembling. After sanding, the beautiful texture of spruce wood appeared. I regret one thing - that in time (before varnishing) I did not think to paint the cornice.

DIY cornice rings

How to make rings for the cornice, I came up with a long time ago.

First, with a hole saw with a diameter of 50 mm, I cut a dozen discs from 10 mm plywood. After processing the edges, their diameter became approximately 46 mm. Then he clamped the discs in a vice and drilled out the middle with a hole saw with a diameter of 32 mm. It turned out blanks for cornice rings, which he carefully processed with sandpaper from all sides. After varnishing the rings, I attached crocodile clips to them with small self-tapping screws.

I spread the transparent domestic yacht varnish in a container made of a cut plastic bottle and slightly darkened it with brown Tikkurila varnish.

Such a container for paints is convenient because the brushes left in it do not dry out, but "live" in the varnish, and after work they do not need to be washed in a strong-smelling white spirit. After all, it is enough to close the container and seal it along the joint, for example, with masking tape.

I covered all the details of the cornice with yacht varnish, after it dried out, in a day, I started assembling. On the front side, at the ends of the facade board, I drilled a pair of 02.5 mm holes, countersinked them under the screw heads with a 6-mm drill. I connected the sidewalls to the front board with wood screws 03.5 x 45 mm. The heads of the screws were masked with glued square bosses and-on masonry cut from the same board.

I put rings with crocodiles on the handle, inserted 8 holes in the sidewalls and fixed it with a pair of screws. The cornice is ready.

It turned out that the lines of the floor, ceiling, windows were not strictly horizontal, and the cornice seemed to hang crookedly. I ended up attaching the curtain rod parallel to the window, although the building level showed slight deviation.

Do-it-yourself cornice - production progress: photo

  1. I made the sides square.
  2. You can also use a Forstner drill or a feather drill to drill holes in the sidewalls.
  3. Metal hanger plates can be purchased at a hardware store or home improvement market.
  4. Semicircular cutouts in the facade board of the cornice were made with an electric jigsaw.
  5. After sanding, the beautiful wood grain is clearly visible.
  6. To make rings from 10 mm plywood, I sawed the discs with a hole saw.
  7. Clamping the plywood discs in a vice, I drilled out the middle.
  8. The blanks of the rings were carefully polished from all sides.
  9. I screwed crocodile clips to the varnished rings with self-tapping screws.
  10. The container for the varnish is made of a plastic bottle.
  11. The details of the cornice, covered with yacht varnish, dried for 24 hours.
  12. The pilot holes in the façade board are countersunk with a 6 mm drill.
  13. The sides are fastened to the front board with self-tapping wood screws.
  14. The screw heads are masked by glued square bosses.

Do you want to make a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands? This is a great solution! After all, sometimes a purchased cornice is not cheap at all, but you really want to save a little. Despite the fact that such a cornice is not always able to meet expectations. Perhaps you don't like its boring design, color and fasteners, or just want to add something? Agree, this happens quite often. Therefore, we advise you to make your own cornice at home. Believe me, there is nothing difficult in this. To do this, you need to stock up on the necessary equipment for the cornice and just assemble this structure together. And you can make a cornice practically from scratch. In this article, we will tell you how you can quickly and easily assemble a functional cornice from ordinary PVC pipes, how to sew curtains with your own hands, without spending a lot of time and money. Stay tuned and we will tell you everything in detail.

The main types of curtain rods

In order to understand how to make a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands, you need to familiarize yourself with the main types of this design.

Cornices are classified according to the following features:

  • Type.
  • Manufacturing material.
  • Place of installation of the structure.
  • The number of rows.

Place of installation

Cornices can be located both on the wall and on the ceiling. Previously, they used a wall mount for the cornice, but now people prefer to mount the structure on the ceiling. This choice is due to the fact that wall cornices, under the weight of a heavy curtain, can break off, and ceiling ones - firmly hold on to the ceiling on special fasteners.

Row

You can also divide the cornices according to the number of rows that are needed for the curtains. Multilayer designs are popular today. They allow you to hang, for example, curtains and tulle on one solid cornice.

Construction device:

  • String cornice. The most common option. In this design, the curtains move along tension strings, which are hidden by a decorative strip.
  • Tubular cornice. It has been used for a very long time and has been familiar to us since childhood. The only drawback is that over time, the surface of the cornice can lose its smoothness, as a result, the rings that hold the curtain begin to move poorly.
  • Baguette cornice. The most modern material of all the cornices presented above. The structure consists of a grooved profile, which is usually hung on the ceiling, sometimes on the wall.

Materials (edit)

Cornices can be made from the following material:

  • Metal.
  • Plastic.
  • Wood.
  • Drywall.

As you can see, the variety of cornices is very large and there is, so to speak, what to choose from. Next, we will tell you in detail about each curtain rod, its advantages and disadvantages, and how to make curtains for curtains with your own hands.

Metal curtain rod

This is a fairly simple implementation of such a complex design. Metal curtain rods are used, as a rule, for heavy curtains and multi-row compositions. Everything is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. Metal cornice is very expensive, so do not rush to purchase it. You can make such a design yourself at home:

  • To do this, you need to buy a metal profile, hooks and fix the cornice to the ceiling.

Important! Do not forget that the number of stripes in the profile must match the number of intended curtains.

  • A tubular cornice is also made of metal. This requires an aluminum or stainless steel tube and mounting brackets. You can take a metal bar and place plugs around the edges using wooden doorknobs.

Polyurethane cornice

Plastic curtain rods are well suited for light curtains, as this material cannot withstand heavy loads. The most common option is precisely the tubular cornice. Making a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands to the country is quite simple. And to find materials for its manufacture - even more so, for example, to buy in a plumbing store.

Important! Polyurethane cornice is a material with positive characteristics, unlike all other polymers:

  • Polyurethane, like any plastic, is absolutely not afraid of water, so it can be safely used, for example, in a bathroom or a toilet.
  • The material is quite lightweight, durable and resistant to high temperatures.
  • These characteristics make it possible to hang the polyurethane cornice in almost all conditions and stick to almost all substrates, including plasterboard structures.
  • To install such a cornice, you only need a polyurethane profile and curtain hooks. Excellent flexibility of the material allows you to give it any shape you like.

Wooden curtain rod

Decorative elements of the interior with the effect of aging are gaining popularity. Even new items are converted to old ones, using the technique of surface abrasion and decoupage. Curtain rod, in this case, is no exception - on the contrary. Wood is used to create different planks for one type of structure.

It is very easy to make a cornice made of wood, adding different decorative elements at your discretion:

  • Cut a bar of the required length and width from a chipboard sheet. After that we paint or paste over with self-adhesive film of the desired color.
  • If it so happens that it is impossible to cut a bar of the required length from a chipboard sheet, it can be additionally attached using special glue or furniture staples.
  • We attach the plank to the ceiling using metal corners. For this design, as a rule, single-row or multi-row strings are used.

Important! You can use another option for the manufacture of such a cornice. To do this, you need to take a suitable wooden stick, go over it with sandpaper, grind it and insert it into the brackets, which you can also do with your own hands.

Plasterboard curtain rod

Such curtain rods are very popular for creating a modern interior. But for the manufacture you need the necessary materials and tools, a little construction experience.

The following are the main features of the cornice made of this material:

  • This design looks like a box into which additional lighting can be connected using spotlights.
  • Most often, a niche is made for a stretch or false ceiling.
  • The main purpose of the plasterboard cornice is to hide the cornice and the top of the curtains from prying eyes. That is why it is made along the width of the window opening or over the entire area of the wall.

Important! The installation of such a niche for the cornice must be performed precisely at the stage of manufacturing the ceiling, since it is much more convenient than installing after all the work performed.

As you can see, there are a lot of options for making curtain rods for curtains. Just show your imagination, make a little effort, and a stylish piece of furniture will emphasize the owner's impeccable taste.

How to make a curtain rod for curtains from a plastic pipe with your own hands?

For the kitchen or utility rooms, you can make your own cornice using a long-forgotten plastic pipe. Such a cornice is well suited for curtains on rings or hinges, also made by hand. For its manufacture, several pipes are required (depending on the required length), special holders and materials for fastening this structure.

Important! Curtains for a plastic cornice can be sewn in the "hourglass" type. To do this, we fix the cornices on the upper and lower flaps, stretch the canvas and tighten it in the center.

Below we will take a step-by-step look at how to make a curtain rod for curtains and a plastic pipe:

  1. First you need to find a tube of the required length to block a window or doorway, several PVC corners, a couple of pipe sections and metal holders.
  2. Next, you need to measure the width of the window opening.
  3. To the obtained measurements, you need to add about 20 cm, we get the length of our future cornice.
  4. Now we gradually start assembling the structure. First, we put the corners on the edges of the plastic pipe.
  5. We insert small pieces, about 15 cm, into the corner in order to leave a gap between the wall and the cornice.
  6. After - we attach metal clips to the ends of the short tubes.
  7. We paint the cornice, for example, in gold, silver or another color.
  8. After the paint has completely dried, we attach the finished cornice to the wall.

That's it, the job is over! We got a full-fledged curtain rod for curtains with our own hands. It is done quickly, and most importantly, your forgotten plastic pipes will be used in your interior. Agree, this is a very profitable solution!

Sewing curtains and curtains with your own hands

Curtains are a type of curtain for which a translucent or dense lightweight fabric is used. Sometimes curtains are called such structures on which the curtains are attached.

Important! Both options are correct. The designation of the word, translated from the Dutch language, means the curtain and the structure on which it is attached.

For sewing curtains, the following fabrics are used:

  • Tulle.
  • Veil.
  • Organza.
  • Muslin.
  • Chiffon.

Today you can easily buy ready-made curtains of different types and models. Their choice is large enough. We will tell you how to sew curtains and arrange them according to your refined taste and preferences. Sometimes it is very difficult to find a suitable curtain for a window of a non-standard size, and it is much more economical and pleasant to sew it.

General principles for sewing curtains

In order to sew curtains, it is not necessary to have extensive experience in cutting and sewing. The main thing is to correctly measure, prepare the fabric and the necessary tools. Believe me, then everything will go like clockwork, you just have to start!

How to take measurements?

  • First you need to measure the length of the cornice.
  • After - measure the distance between the eaves and the floor.

Important! If you need long enough curtains, then add another 10-20 cm to the length.

  • If you need to sew curtains with allowances for folds, then add ⅓ of the total length to the length of the cornice.
  • If you want a curtain with a lush drapery, then you need a length of fabric such as three lengths of the entire curtain rod.

How to choose the right curtain material?

In order to choose a fabric for sewing curtains, it is necessary to take into account all directions of the world. For example:

  • In a room located on the south side, it is better to use a denser and more opaque fabric as curtains.
  • If the windows face the shady side, then you can stop at a thinner and lighter fabric.

Important! Be aware that fabrics such as chiffon and voile may fold into an accordion when sewing on the sewing machine. Therefore, the line should be done slowly and with extreme care. For such work, it is better to use more gentle modern machines that have the function of sewing on fine fabrics.

Step-by-step instructions on how to sew curtains

Of course, in a shaded room, a thick fabric curtain will make the room dark and gloomy. But at the same time, such an ordinary curtain will add sophistication to the interior, so the solution to this problem is a curtain for curtains, created by hand. It can be sewn multi-layered and finally decorated with a lambrequin. Your room will become beautiful and elegant, and the pleasant rays of the sun will delight you every day.

Stage 1 - buying and cutting fabric

Let's get acquainted with the calculations for building a pattern for curtains. For example, we will take a canvas of a standard size 1.2-2.2 meters:

  • In order to calculate the amount of fabric, you need to use the formula: divide the width of the curtains by the width of the fabric, we get the number of stripes.
  • Further, the resulting number is multiplied by the length of the curtains, including the seam allowances. For example, the curtain is 9 meters wide and 3 meters long. In a roll of fabric, say, 1.5 meters. We get: 9/1, 5.6 strips of fabric comes out.
  • Now we multiply the number of stripes by the length of our curtain: we multiply 6 by 3 and we get 18 meters. Thus, in order to sew a curtain measuring 9 by 3 meters, you need to take 18 meters of fabric 1.5 meters wide.

Important! This method can be used for one full-width curtain or for multiple curtains. For curtains of two halves, only one half of the cut fabric needs to be sewn. Use chalk or a bar of soap to keep the cut fairly straight.

Stage 2 - sewing curtains

We will acquaint you with step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains with your own hands:

  • First, we sew together the rectangles of the fabric so as to eventually teach the canvas of the required size.
  • To make the seams less noticeable, we indent from the edge of the fabric and process each seam with an overlock.
  • We turn each edge, except for the bottom one, by approximately 1-1.5 cm.

Important! If you are using a thin fabric for curtains, then the hem should be very small. When hemming from 1 cm or more, the edges of the curtains will look sloppy.

  • Before processing the edges of the fabric, you need to pin them with a needle with a round eye, mark and then iron them. We bend the bottom edge by about 5-10 cm.
  • In order to process the upper edge, you need to make a hem about 5 cm on the wrong side, and using pins, attach the braid to it.

Important! If the tape is more or less 5 cm wide, then the hem width should be equal to the width of this tape. If you want to sew curtains for a wide braid, then when buying, you must take into account the size for the hem.

  • Now we sew the tape onto the curtain.

Important! To prevent the curtain tape from wrinkling, try to sew the lines in one direction.

  • At the end of the work, we tighten the cords in the braid, collect the curtains in folds, straighten them beautifully and tie knots at the ends of the side cords.

Sewing a lambrequin

There is a wide selection of different lambrequins on the market, so first you need to decide exactly how you want to decorate the kitchen, living room or children's room. Lambrequins can be in different designs: arches, waves, cylindrical, drop-shaped, with folds or frill, decorated with braid or ribbon. In a word, you can make lambrequins with your own hands in different designs, as soon as your imagination allows. Examples of finished work on the creation of lambrequins can be found in the photo. There are so many of them that believe me, there is plenty to choose from.

  • Lambrequin must be fastened separately from curtains and curtains, since regardless of the curtain of the window, it will always be in the same place.
  • It is easy and simple to sew a horizontal lambrequin. To do this, you need to cut out a strip along the width of the window, attach the braid to it, sheathe the bottom edge with tape and completely assemble the braid.
  • It is much more difficult to create such an element of lambrequins as a swag, since for its sewing you need to create a pattern.

Important! In order to correctly build a pattern, it is necessary to cut the swag at an angle of 45 ° to the direction to the shared thread of the canvas. The consumption of fabric in this case will not be entirely economical, but the swag will lie exactly with soft folds, without untidy creases.

  • The width of the pattern elements directly depends on the length of the cornice. For example, if you want to make a lambrequin from three swags, then sew them with a slight overlap, that is, an overlap.

There are many types of cornices on sale, but many homeowners want to have something original in the interior, different from consumer goods. Or the status of the premises does not impose special requirements on the interior, and there is no need to spend money on an accessory of industrial production - you can build something from the available tools at hand.

Examples of placing curtains on homemade devices

Consider several options on how you can make a cornice with your own hands, with reference to a particular situation.

Despite the small list of functions performed and the seeming insignificance of the role in the interior, the basic requirements for cornice devices are quite serious:

  • strength - the destruction of the device is fraught with injury to a person or (if falling on a heating device) fire from the ignition of curtains;
  • safety - no harmful emissions;
  • aesthetics - due to the visual accessibility of the location of the accessory.

When assembling an accessory on your own, these requirements must be taken into account, as are also taken into account by the manufacturers of curtain rods, who manufacture products in an industrial way.

Homemade decorative cornices

Self-made can also be called those products that are made by professional woodcarvers or blacksmiths, that is, accessories of a high class of artistic performance, but made by hand. The cost of such curtain rods is often several times higher than the price of highly decorative models of industrial production, but at the same time serial ones. We will consider technologies that do not require professional skill and expensive materials, but that allow you to assemble a product of a sufficient level of aesthetics.

Cornice baguettes made of metal pipes or rods

The most affordable metal suitable for making a cornice in everyday life is water pipes with a diameter of ½ and ¾ inches, both galvanized and black. Most paints adhere even better to the zinc coating.

First of all, depending on the size of the span, the pipe diameter and the number of brackets are selected. On the cornice for a narrow window or door (less than 0.8 m), you can use a half-inch pipe; for a larger span, it is better to take material with a diameter of ¾. If the width of the window opening is more than 1.5 m, then the cornice device must be attached to 3 brackets - along the edges and in the middle.

Steel water pipe curtain rods with connecting fittings

Having retreated 15-20 cm to the sides from the side slopes of the window opening, the total length of the cornice is obtained, and the desired piece of pipe is cut off. If there are 3 fasteners, then the cut fragment is cut in half. Then, at all ends of the two obtained pieces, a thread is cut with a scraper (3-4 turns), having previously removed a chamfer on their outer edges and lubricated with grease.

From the same pipe, pipes with a length of 10-15 cm are cut - according to the number of fasteners, and a thread is also cut on each side on one side. Then you need to purchase or cut out with a grinder from sheet steel 3-5 mm thick supporting "spots" according to the number of pipes and drill holes in them with countersink for self-tapping screws. Nozzles are welded to the spots strictly perpendicular to their plane - with an end without a thread, the weld is grinded with a grinder, and the cornice can be completely assembled on threaded connections: 2 nozzles are connected to the bar with pipe branches of the corresponding diameter, and the third with a tee.

An option for a homemade eaves from a steel pipe and bends

Important! If a pipe without zinc spraying is used for the manufacture of a cornice, then when the components are ready (before assembly), one of the ways is to burn them (blackening), which will give the surface a dark shade and protect against corrosion.

As a finish, you can use painting in a suitable color - with nitro paint from a spray can or with auto enamel with a brush. It is undesirable to use oil paint - rings slide poorly on such a paint layer.

Watching this video will help the description:

For the manufacture of a curtain rod with a small span (up to 1.5 m), you can also use a steel rod with a square cross section of 12x12 mm, which is quite suitable as a curtain rod. To make the bar decorative, a cut-to-size rod is marked along the length into several sections, after which it is twisted by an equal number of revolutions on a lathe or with the help of manual mechanical devices. The hexagon rod can also be twisted around its axis, both in sections and over its entire length.

Manual mechanical devices for twisting metal rods

The rod for the cornice can also be made from a round steel bar with a diameter of 15-20 mm. If such an element is hot forged along its entire length, followed by bluing, then the accessory takes on the appearance of an antique interior element. If the ends of the bar are splashed, then they become limiters for the rings, but they can also be decorated with wooden decorative knobs.

On-site eaves on wood and metal brackets

For both types of rods, it is not difficult to make brackets - they can be either made of wood or metal - forged, bent, chiseled. On sale you can also find ready-made components of the simplest designs.

Metal bracket options

There are no questions about fastening the brackets - they are usually mounted with self-tapping screws in holes sealed with nylon snipe, at the same height from the floor.

Eaves made of polypropylene tubes

PP pipes can also be used to make homemade curtain rod fixtures. The design of the finished baguette will differ from the accessory made of metal pipes only in the way of assembly, strength and weight.

The product is assembled from the same components as in the case of metal pipes - 3/4 inch PP-pipe, identical elbows and tee, support nickels.

Components and assemblies of a homemade PP-pipe cornice

The assembly of the elements is carried out using a special device - an iron, the skills of working with which are acquired after two or three trial connections.

After assembly, the cornice is painted with paint from a spray gun or a spray can.

PP-pipe eaves painted in red copper and brass

The products are durable, resistant to most types of household exposure, but due to the flexibility of polypropylene, they are not suitable for placing heavy curtains, and for light curtains, the distance between the brackets should not be more than 1 m.

Wooden cornice devices

Cornice moldings made of wood, like metal ones, are produced in various types.

If we consider rod-type devices, then their design does not differ from metal ones - the same rod with brackets, only made of wood. The bar is turned on a lathe from a bar of the required length. The wood can be of any common type, but without knots. After finishing the turning work, the crossbar is sanded with sandpaper, varnished and installed on a wall or ceiling using brackets.

Various designs wooden curtain rod curtain rods

The second type of cornice made of wood - with a decorative strip, can also be made by hand, while it is not necessary to master the art of artistic carving. You need to familiarize yourself with and make a copy of the accessory, but to decorate the decorative strip, use ready-made carved decor available for sale in furniture accessories stores.

Important! To decorate the cornice strip, instead of wooden elements of carved decor, you can use a polystyrene ceiling plinth, which is glued to the base and decorated in an artistic way - with water-based paints.

A board with a thickness of 2-2.5 cm, smoothly planed, with processed edges, is taken, and brackets are mounted to it. Elements of carved decor are attached to the front side of the strip with PVA glue, after which they wait for the adhesive to dry and decorate the decorative strip in an artistic way - they are stained and varnished.

A cornice with a decorative strip can have a hidden rod or a cable string for fastening rings in the design.

The second version of this accessory is for decoration - installation of a strip with brackets (or without them) on the base on top of a string-type cornice device pre-mounted there.

Wooden curtain rods: on the left - with guides in the structure, on the right - overhead placement, without a bar

Bamboo Rod Curtain Rods

Bamboo does not grow in Russia, but at present not only furniture and handicrafts from it are imported from China, but also bamboo trunks and twigs themselves, both fresh and dry. An original cornice can also be made from an old bamboo shelf or wall shelf, if the length and diameter of the rods allows.

Bamboo stems for eaves rod: fresh and dry annealed

Important! The flexural strength of a bamboo rod can be increased by removing the top layer of bark from the rod, which contains cambium, the shell that gives the trunk flexibility.

If you plan to use rings to place the curtains, then on the bamboo rod, the transverse thickenings are processed with a file, making them streamlined, but it is important not to grind off the excess, so as not to weaken the rod significantly in this place.

Homemade bamboo cornices: double row and single row

If, instead of rings, loop loops of braid are used that do not move along the bar, then the transverse annular thickenings on the bamboo can be left unchanged and even made more embossed with the help of automotive putty, and then paint the crossbar in the color of a living trunk - juicy green.

To decorate the rod of bamboo cornices, you can also anneal it with a blowtorch and then cover it with colorless varnish.

Homemade rod curtain rods made of dry annealed and dyed bamboo

There can be many options for additional decoration of bamboo cornices, depending on the status of the room and the class of its finishing.

Cornice fixtures from a tree branch

The selected branch is cut to size and everything exfoliating and affected is removed from it. Then the workpiece is dried, the protruding knots are removed from it, processed with sandpaper and covered with varnish - preferably semi-matt, preserving the naturalness of the product.

Depending on the configuration of the accessory, brackets are selected for it, and fixed in place, after which curtains are placed on the branch - on rings or hinges made of braid.

Homemade eaves from natural tree branches

Important! In wooden houses, it is especially important to treat the branch with an antiseptic against grinder insects, for example, "Antizhuk", which will protect the structure from infection with it.

Rope curtain rods

Original devices for placing curtains can be built from high-quality rope, but it should not be impregnated, such as hemp, otherwise the room will smell of oil.

Such a cornice does not have a universal design and can be decorated in a wide variety of ways, but at its ends, of course, there should be brackets for attaching to a wall or ceiling.

Eaves cables for curtains

If desired, decorative elements can be woven into the rope, or dyed in a brighter color.

Combinations from sports equipment

You can use both a paddle and old golf or hockey clubs to place the curtains, but refurbished and covered with a protective layer of paint or varnish. This type of cornice is especially suitable for decorating rooms intended for teenage children.

A rowing paddle as a curtain rod

The paddle can be additionally decorated with artificial algae. Brackets are made, of course, with reference to the used accessory.

Twin club curtain rods for golf and hockey

Such a device is distinguished not only by originality, but also by its durability, moreover, it can be fixed on the wall without damaging the inventory, and subsequently dismantled and used for its intended purpose.

Conclusion

If the room is decorated with expensive finishes, and the interior is designed in a certain style, then, if you are not a master in the manufacture of cornices, you will hardly be able to do something worthy. But you can safely try yourself in this role, for example, in the country, since for a room without any special frills do it yourself decent eaves for curtains is quite real.

The main point of the article

  1. If you do not want to decorate the room with serial products, you can make a curtain rod yourself.
  2. The device for placing curtains is a simple device, but it also has a number of mandatory requirements that you need to know when manufacturing.
  3. The list of materials at hand, from which you can yourself, is wide, but not always the possibility of using them comes to mind by itself. Therefore, when planning to assemble the cornice with your own hands, it is better to know the common technologies for its independent production.
  4. When assessing your capabilities, you need to be objective - not to waste time copying highly artistic models, but to make something original for a middle-class interior.

The cornice is an irreplaceable device for fixing curtains. You can buy it at any hardware store. But there is a problem. The owners do not always like ready-made models. They don't match in size or color. And the design is rarely original. Therefore, many are beginning to be interested in how to make a cornice with their own hands.

Expert opinion

Practical advice from Diana Smetanina, OLEKSDECO sales manager, manufacturer and seller of window decoration products.

  • uniqueness - you can count on the fact that no one else has such a second accessory;
  • price - you can try to save money by spending less money on the product of your work than on a store purchase.

But in real life, both "bonuses" of homemade curtain rods are not at all as attractive as in theory.

At first, you can choose a unique design for the windows and from the market range. For example, for forged metal curtain rods, there is a huge variety of decorative tips, pipes of different diameters and shapes, models of ceiling and wall brackets. I'm not talking about dozens of color options, the number of which is constantly increasing.

Secondly, the savings when making your own curtain rod is deceiving. There is only one way to reduce costs to a minimum: place the curtains on the first wooden, plastic or metal rod that comes along. But you will have to spend money on a cornice that is comfortable to use and attractive in appearance: high-quality material, equipment, accessories. As a result, in 9 cases out of 10 you will spend more than on a ready-made model of the middle price category.

So a homemade curtain rod can be an interesting creative experiment. For example, when decorating the interior of a country house, where you can give free rein to your imagination. But for placing curtains in rooms that you use constantly, I recommend ready-made designs that can be selected for any conditions and tastes without high costs.

What do craftsmen need to know?

Creating a cornice on your own is not an easy task that requires careful preparation, attentiveness and accuracy from the master. It is recommended that you preview the various videos and workshops so that you have an idea of the work ahead.

Then you need to decide on the choice of a suitable cornice. They are of several types. Let's consider the most popular options:

  • Plastic. Nice and inexpensive material. Suitable for heavy and massive curtains;
  • Wooden. Standard round wood cornice. A classic and versatile option. It is used in any interiors and in combination with all types of curtains;
  • Multi-row. Such a cornice will be required if the owners plan to hang several curtains (in 2-3 rows);
  • Metallic. The heaviest type of cornice. Forged products not only hold the curtains securely, but also act as interior decoration.

Each owner decides for himself which option to give preference to. Note that it is extremely difficult to make metal products on your own. Therefore, it is better to create a cornice from plastic pipes or wood.

Let's look at examples of several simple models that almost every home craftsman can make.

String cornice

Budget and simple option. Its only drawback is that it is not always easy to fit into the overall interior of the room. If you are not satisfied with the appearance of such a cornice, then it can be improved by means of decorative strips.

The design is extremely simple. A string (one or more) acts as the main bearing part. Its length depends on the size of the room and the window opening. There will also be no problems with installation. To make a string cornice, you need to fix several bracket-brackets in the wall, between which the string is stretched.

Instead of the usual rings for curtains, hooks or clips are used. It is on them that the canvas is held. Various brackets can be used. They must match the color scheme of the interior.

If the room is finished in hi-tech style, then shiny metal holders will do. Holders made of natural wood are suitable for a classic interior. The only problem is that such a curtain rod is not suitable for attaching curtains or heavy curtains.

String cornice is the simplest solution. It can be done in just 5-10 minutes without serious efforts and financial costs. You can also do it outside the box - attach the string holders to the ceiling. The ceiling cornice looks unusual and attractive.

If you cover it with a decorative strip, then you can hide both the stretched string and various defects present on the wall. Any materials are suitable for creating planks - plastic, chipboard, etc. The width is from ten to fifteen centimeters, and the length is chosen in accordance with the dimensions of the cornice.

It is recommended to use material with a small margin. The excess can be removed with an ordinary hacksaw. Give the decorative strip the desired look. A thread is made on it. It can also be simply painted and varnished.

Another simple finish is self-adhesive foil. Now it is on sale in a huge assortment. It will not be difficult to choose a material for any design. For example, imitation of natural wood will make the cornice very original and stylish.

Plastic pipe cornice

Cornice for those who do not want to spend a lot of time and effort. It will only take a couple of minutes to create it. A good option for owners who have extra plastic pipes and fittings after renovation in the bathroom. For the cornice you will need:

  • Plastic tubes;
  • Holders.
  • We also take a drill and screws or liquid nails (glue), if you do not plan to make holes in the walls.

To hang such a cornice, you don't need to create, paint or decorate anything. We simply fix the holders over the window opening (with screws or liquid nails) and insert plastic tubes into them.

A similar structure is dismantled in a matter of seconds. See a photo of a plastic cornice with your own hands and make sure that everyone can make it.

When the structure is installed, you can think about additional decorative design. Painting, self-adhesive tape and other options will do. Try different options and don't be afraid to experiment.

A new, useful master class on our website. If you have the desire and opportunity, you will create a small masterpiece for your home with your own hands.

In my case, the wooden cornice serves as a decorative element with lighting. In the process of working on the balcony, the task of lighting it arose at the stage of the project. It was required to provide a sufficient amount of light, and organize the light so that it was not harsh, tiring, and did not hit the eyes. This means that the light sources had to be hidden so that they would not be visible in any case. The task was also to link the lighting with the concept of the project, so that the lighting emphasizes the style and creates a cozy atmosphere for both relaxation and work. So it was decided to place the main light under the ceiling, on the side walls of the balcony. And in order to make the light comfortable in accordance with the requirements, it was decided to remove the light sources in a removable wooden cornice, made in the general style with the concept of the balcony design.

In order to save money, I decided to make a wooden cornice with my own hands from a defective pine board, which was driven by a "screw" due to the fact that it was sawed from raw material ... By the way, check out our master class on. You will also like it.
