Filament curtains - muslin. How to make filament curtains with your own hands Curtains from threads with your own hands

In recent years, designers have increasingly used unusual and original materials, such as threads, to decorate window space. Despite their undeniable advantages, filament curtains are quite expensive and not everyone decides to use them for decorative purposes. But in vain. After all, you can create unusual and spectacular ones yourself. We will talk about which filament curtains are used in the kitchen in the interior and provide you with a detailed master class with a photo selection on how to make them yourself.

Types of filament curtains

Filament curtains in modern kitchen design are original, unusual, spectacular. Despite the unusualness of such a window frame, the kitchen will look more cozy and comfortable. There are many types of filament curtains. Consider their classification according to the principle of greatest popularity:

  • narrow threads;
  • wide noodles;
  • spirals, thick ropes ("chains");
  • plain thread curtains;
  • filament curtains using several colors (combined in the form of a rainbow or in the form of a sharp contrast);
  • curtains using various decorative elements (beads, sequins, feathers);
  • threads using pom-poms.

Why are filament curtains for the kitchen so good?

Filament curtains have a number of undoubted advantages, thanks to which they are so popular in the design of a kitchen room:

Making filament curtains with your own hands

The first step is to carefully select the working material for the manufacture of filament curtains and translate your idea on paper.

Making calculations and preparing the necessary materials

So, as for the working material for a filament curtain, almost any yarn can become it: both simple and decorated with decorative elements or a shiny flowing wave of beads. The choice is yours. After you have decided on the material, you can begin to measure the window opening, as well as calculate the optimal length and width of the future curtain.

Advice. If you plan to periodically move the curtains, then it is better to use a wooden base as a cornice.

It is very important to correctly determine the number of warp threads needed. Ideally, there should be at least a dozen. As for the optimal length, it can be any, depending on the area of the kitchen and the height of the ceiling.

Also, take care of some tools that will be useful to you in order for the work to progress quickly and efficiently:

  • tape and a regular ruler (preferably made of metal);
  • scissors;
  • threads (the best option would be to use several colors, but if you have a kitchen made in monochrome, then give preference to only one, maximum two colors to match the kitchen finish);

  • plastic/glass beads;
  • aluminum wire, about 3 mm in diameter;
  • hinge screws;
  • wire cutters;
  • needle.

Curtain making process

We begin work with the installation of the eaves. You can use an ordinary wooden plank, which must first be sanded with sandpaper and painted with ordinary acrylic paint. While our workpiece dries up, we make a basting for the installation of the future structure above the window space.

After the bar is ready for further actions, we create fasteners from prepared loops, be sure to indent at least 2-3 cm from each edge. Then we proceed to stringing rings made of aluminum wire. If you don’t feel like messing around with such a mount, you can do it easier - tie the threads right on the eaves with a double knot.

After the blanks are finished, you can proceed to the main stage of work. We lay out the threads so that it is convenient to measure the required length (do not forget to add a couple of centimeters for knots to the length, if necessary). After that, we proceed directly to tying the threads to the eaves.

Advice. In order to have a visual idea of whether enough material has been prepared and how the curtain will look, work should start only from the edge, moving towards the middle.

The last stage is the attachment of additional decorative elements to the threads (if you have such a desire). If you use beads as them, then an impressive effect can be achieved by placing them randomly, but if you use ribbons, try to fasten them at a certain distance from each other. Then it remains only to fix the cornice in the place prepared in advance.

Techniques for adjusting the kitchen space from professionals

Unfortunately, not all of us own apartments with a chic layout, and most of us have to be content with “modest” squares, especially in the kitchen. But it doesn’t matter, professional designers in such cases use some tricks when choosing curtains, which we will now share with you:

  1. To expand the kitchen space, use shiny threads in delicate light shades.
  2. Visually "raise" the ceiling is possible when using multi-colored threads. The main thing is that the color scheme actively alternates in the decoration of the curtains, thus creating the effect of vertical stripes.
  3. Play with contrast by using threads in a shade that is opposite (far) from the color used when finishing the floor when creating the curtains. This technique will visually expand the space.

We introduced you to information about what types of filament curtains are, and also provided a detailed master class on creating an original and spectacular do-it-yourself window decoration. Be sure to try to bring this idea to life. We are sure you won't regret it!

Absolutely not like traditional curtains, they are much lighter and weightless, and they look original, attracting attention to themselves. A feature of the long muslin, in contrast to the unhindered passage of warm air from the battery, so in winter you can leave the curtains in a free position.

Curtains-threads: we think over the design

The shape of filament curtains is represented by various variations that differ in color, thread material, the presence of decorative accessories in the form of beads, rhinestones, glass beads, beads. In general, there are the following recommendations for choosing a design option:

Depending on the style of external performance, do-it-yourself kisei curtains may look like this:

Spiral Models

The threads are twisted in a special way, acquiring a characteristic spiral shape. This version of filament curtains requires especially careful operation.

Rainbow decisions and kisei-rain

A light curtain, in which the colors of the threads smoothly flow into each other like a rainbow, harmoniously looks in modern interiors and emphasizes the positive atmosphere in the nursery. You can choose as the centerpiece of a room dominated by restrained tones, complementing the decor with colored accessories to match the threads.

Rain models are characterized by the interweaving of thin strips of Lurex into the threads, which gives shine.

There is one important nuance regarding the use and care of muslin. To easily unravel the filament curtains after washing, they are pre-tied in several places and a roll is formed. Then, after a delicate machine wash, the curtain will quickly acquire its original shape when hanging, even if there is additional decor on the threads.

How to choose the right length?

To correctly determine the length of the filament curtain and the required number of threads, use a long ruler or tape measure to measure the window opening in width and determine the height of the curtain from the floor to the cornice (if the cornice is fixed under the ceiling, the length is selected according to the overall size of the room). Adjustments are made after hanging: for this, it is enough just to cut the filament curtains.

To properly make muslin curtains, it is important not to make a mistake with the width. To determine the number of threads, we proceed from the placement of at least ten elements per centimeter. It is possible from fabric strips, limited to five elements per centimeter of width.

Threads (especially natural threads) are pre-soaked before cutting, carrying out the so-called decotation to prevent shortening during operation. Subject to this condition, the kisei will retain its dimensions even after washing.

Mounting on the eaves

As already noted, any cornice is suitable for kisei. Separate threads are first fixed on the curtain braid, after which the thread curtains can be attached to the cornice itself. To facilitate the process of fixing the ropes, they are not sewn on individually, but double-sided tape is used, one side of which is attached to the curtain tape, and the other to the threads themselves. To cover the sticky part of the adhesive tape, non-woven fabric with an adhesive base is attached to it and to the very threads of the curtain, which are machine-stitched. Then a decorative satin ribbon is sewn on.

Another method is also used, in which filament curtains are attached not to adhesive tape, but to adhesive tape at half its height, after which the second half closes, tightly clamping the muslin. Then for staples. Decorative design is done using a satin ribbon, which is then attached to the cornice for filament curtains. The tape is sewn, completely wrapping the place where the muslin is fixed.

Filament curtains are not new. They were already popular decades ago.

Now such models are back in fashion. Do-it-yourself unique filament curtains are absolutely different from traditional curtains, they are much lighter and weightless, and they look original, attracting attention to themselves. Do-it-yourself filament curtains look advantageous when decorating window openings in children's rooms, living rooms and bedrooms; You can give originality to finished products using decorations for filament curtains in the form of beads, decorative pebbles or other accessories; are eyelet models. When using threads of different colors for sewing a light curtain, you can change the bored pattern by quickly changing the location of the threads; If desired, you can adjust the length by shortening the thread curtains with your own hands. Due to the special weaving of the fibers, the threads do not unwind when cut, retaining their shape; Such a curtain can be used to visually separate the space when you need to delimit the living room and kitchen or create a special atmosphere in the bedroom with the help of a thread canopy; Eaves for thread curtains have a conventional design, since for fastenings, a dense curtain braid is used.

Main materials

To make rope curtains yourself, you will need:

Suitable thread.

You can use a thread of the same texture, but a different color. Threads with a glossy surface look best. Viscose threads in the form of a thin cord and a silky texture will do.

Approximately for the manufacture of a thread curtain for a standard window, you will need about 10 skeins of 270 meters each. A tape measure for measuring threads along the length (the standard option is 2.5 meters). On adhesive tape, it is possible to arrange the ropes strictly at regular intervals, excluding the unevenness of the rope curtain. Satin ribbon. This decor element is chosen directly under the product, guided by the color scheme of the threads. A needle and scissors and a stapler, which will be needed to fix the tape and sew on the braid.

To make filament curtains with your own hands, the threads that have dried after soaking are first cut to the desired size and carefully folded, trying not to tangle.

If desired, some ropes are decorated with decorative elements (the decor is also fixed after placing the curtains on the cornice, when each thread hangs down without being tangled with the rest). At the next stage, the threads are assembled into a single structure according to the recommendations described above and the finished curtain is hung on the eaves. You can decorate an airy curtain with homemade tiebacks to match the curtain, with the help of which threads are picked up from the sides, forming a classic silhouette, or only the central elements are tied, leaving the side threads freely falling.

As you can see, the independent production of filament curtains does not cause difficulties if the necessary materials are at hand. The main thing is to think over the style of execution, choose the right colors for the threads, guided by the style of the interior, the color scheme of the room, the need to add bright accents. Appointment of filament curtains

In addition to the fact that you can decorate a window in a kitchen, living room or bedroom with filament curtains, with the help of this product you can give an interesting look to a doorway, arch or zoning a room. The filament curtain used as a canopy for a children's and adult bed looks very nice.

At the same time, the work on the manufacture of this product for all types of applications will not differ in anything. Interior decoration can also be done using homemade filament curtains, both on the window and on the door at the same time. This will make the environment even more harmonious.

Handmade curtains made of threads are ideal for arranging a children's room.

Since the entire process will be carried out independently, if necessary, replace one or more elements, and in the children's room this may be required in the first place, this will not be difficult at all. If curtain repair is included in subsequent plans, then you need to take care of the availability of material for this in advance and save the additional threads that were used for manufacturing. In this case, the nursery will always look neat and original.

Material for manufacturing

Before you start making curtains from threads, you need to decide on the material. Despite the fact that natural threads are environmentally friendly and safe for the human body, it is best to choose polyester threads for making muslin. Such yarn is also absolutely harmless, but besides this, it is more convenient to work with it and take care of it in the future.

Polyester threads can have any color, be decorated with lurex, which will provide an opportunity to create a curtain in the form that will most decorate and complement the interior of the room. In addition, under the influence of ultraviolet light, such threads do not fade, which explains their long service life. Such a curtain does not electrify, and when wet it will dry quickly.

Master class on making filament curtains

The main stages that make up the master class for making filament curtains are:

cornice installation. If an ordinary wooden plank is used for these purposes, then before use it must be sanded with sandpaper, and then coated with a transparent varnish or painted in the desired color.

After drying, loops must be screwed along the edges of the plank, retreating from each edge 2 cm. On the wall to which the cornice will be attached, precise markings are made for fastening the loops; rings are strung on a wooden plank, which can be bought in a store or made independently from wire. The number of these elements is determined based on the required density of the curtains and the thickness of the threads used; a thread is threaded through each ring and tied with a double knot; a cornice with threads is fixed on the wall.

In order to correctly determine the length of the threads in the muslin, it is necessary to multiply the required size of the product by 2, and add 5-10 cm to the resulting value. This is necessary so that after fixing the threads on the cornice, as well as tying them in a knot to give a more beautiful appearance, the product has not become too short.

If the filament curtains are decorated with beads, then an additional length must be left to secure them, since in order to fix the decorative element in a certain place, it is necessary to tie a knot under it. Beads can be arranged both in a certain and in a completely chaotic order. Their size is also not limited by anything. It should be borne in mind that if they are not used, threads that have a very small weight may not hang as they should.

The beads, in this case, will not only decorate the curtain, but also be a weighting agent that helps the threads take a strictly vertical position. Do-it-yourself thread curtains made in this way imply the possibility of shifting the canvas in any direction. If this is not required, then you can fix the threads on the eaves without use of rings. To do this, each element is simply put on the rail with a loop, followed by tightening it. All other work is done in exactly the same order.

In the event that, after hanging on the cornice, as well as fixing it with a knot, hairpin or pickup in the required position, the thread curtain turned out to be somewhat longer than required, then it can be cut with scissors.

In order for the edges of the threads not to unravel, the end of each can be decorated with a small knot. If the muslin is made of dark-colored threads, then to prevent dissolution, the ends of the threads can be processed using a fire source. In this case, the fibers of polyester threads will fuse together, which will prevent them from unraveling both during operation and when washing by hand or in an automatic washing machine.

Proper care of filament curtains

Unlike a factory-made muslin, which involves attaching threads to a specially designed tape, caring for a self-made curtain will take some time. So in order to wash such a curtain, it is necessary to remove all the threads from the eaves, braid them into a braid and only then immerse them in the drum of the washing machine.

In the event that the threads were worn on the cornice without using rings, then after the completion of the streaking, it will be necessary to almost re-tailor the curtains, putting each thread on the bar. If the filament curtains were decorated with sequins, rhinestones or beads, then automatic washing will not work and the entire cleaning process will have to be done manually. Every woman tries to decorate her home and bring comfort to it.

Unusual solutions and interesting ideas look especially original. Recently, there has been a return to such a decorative and practical element as filament curtains. filament curtains

Process description

First of all, you need to think over the design, decide which thread curtains you would like to see in your home.

It should be noted that they can be made of various materials, have different thickness, structure and texture. The shape of the curtains also depends on whether they will serve as a partition or simply become a decoration. To give the room originality, you can create a pattern on the curtains.

To get started and create filament curtains with your own hands, you need to prepare:

    the cornice on which they will hang; ribbons that are used for fastening; various threads for the product; decor elements: beads, sequins or rhinestones.

What should be the length?

You also need to consider the type of threads and the distance where you plan to place them. The density of the curtains will depend on these indicators. Filament curtains of different density can be seen in the photo.

If preference is given to thin threads, then the distance between them should be about 2-5 mm. The number of skeins should be taken in centimeters, and it is calculated as follows: the length of the cornice must be divided by the distance between the threads. This will determine the number of threads that you need to take to create curtains with your own hands along the entire length of the eaves.

The resulting number should be multiplied by the distance from the floor to the ceiling. Then the centimeters should be converted to meters, and from here the required number of skeins should be determined. In the event that the threads turned out to be longer than necessary - it's not scary. It is enough to carefully cut them, and then fix them from below.

Fastening

Most workshops for making filament curtains assume that they will be fixed on a reinforcing tape. To do this, the threads must be cut, leaving the required length, and then attached to the base. They are intertwined with the help of loops in two rows.

You can also choose the second option.

The threads are attached to special rings, which are then put on the cornice. The curtain will look like in the photo. Sometimes filament curtains are mounted on a prepared plank of wood, on which holes are made. Threads are threaded through them and fixed, as in the photo.

Main materials

Curtain threads can be made from a variety of yarns, ranging from plain to shiny and smooth materials that shimmer and flow perfectly. You can decorate curtains with any decor elements, it all depends on your imagination and personal preferences. It can be not only beads and sequins, but also bells and other decorations.

For each bead, a suitable needle is selected, with which it is strung. It is better to hang about 10 decorations on one thread - then the finished product will not be overloaded with unnecessary details. The thicker the thread product is woven, the more reliably you need to cling to the decor.

Necessary calculations

When making the basis of filament curtains with your own hands, it is necessary to take into account the width of the doorway or other opening where the curtains will be located. If it is assumed that it will be necessary to move the curtains, then it is necessary to leave a space between the threads. With frequent shifting-pushing apart, it is more expedient to mount them on a wooden plank - it will be more practical and reliable.

An important point is the number of woven threads that form the basis of the curtains. For a standard size, about 15 pieces of thread are needed, but the exact amount is taken into account based on the width of the opening and personal preference.

The length should not necessarily be to the floor, you can make the curtains not full length - this will create the illusion of spaciousness. The edges of the curtain can be made in various shapes: a semicircle, waves or classic straight lines. A more detailed master class can be viewed on the video.

Caring for filament curtains is not particularly difficult. They are easy to wash in warm soapy water.

Consider the final design - how you see your curtains as a result. Think about the color, thickness, quality of the threads used, etc. Consider where you will use them - whether it will be curtains separating the kitchen from the rooms, or an interior option.

In addition, it is worth considering the pattern on the curtain, if you plan to create one.

Make sure you get all the necessary items. The list includes:
- threads of different colors and textures;
- base tapes, on which you will attach the threads;
- sequins, beads and other decorative elements;
- cornice.

Correctly calculate the length of the product and the number of threads used. To do this, experts recommend using fairly simple formulas. As initial data, you will need the length of the cornice and the height from ceiling to floor. The calculation should be carried out depending on the type of threads and the distance at which they will be located from each other (i.e. whether the curtains will be dense or almost transparent).

So, if the threads are thin, it is optimal to leave a distance of 2-5 mm between them. You can count the number of skeins of threads using the formula: divide the length of the cornice by the distance between the threads (all in cm). So you get the number of threads that will be required to complete the entire length of the cornice. Next, you need to multiply the resulting number by the length of the opening from floor to ceiling. You will get a number in centimeters. Convert it to meters, you just have to look at the footage of a skein of thread, and you can determine the desired number of skeins.

If you overdid it with the length of the threads, do not panic and worry. It is enough to carefully trim the excess with scissors and fasten the curtains from below.

There are several options on how to make thread. One of them involves the use of reinforcing tape. To make such a curtain, you need to cut the threads into segments and put them on the base. Then it remains to interlace them with loops in two rows.

Another option looks like this. Cut the threads into lengths and fasten them to the curtain rings. It remains only to put the rings on the eaves and you can curtain the opening.

You can also use a wooden plank with prepared holes. Place the cut threads in them and fasten.

How to diversify filament curtains

Filamentous curtains can be made very original. If you study the photos that designers post on the Internet, you will notice that very often beads, rhinestones, etc. are used for decoration. In some cases, if you place the threads close together, and also use shiny cuts, it is easy to create the illusion that you used thin long scarves for decoration.

One of the modern trends in interior design is filament curtains. They are used for various purposes, but for any application, they look unusual and very attractive.

The product that appeared on the curtain market in recent years caused delight and bewilderment. Some people like the unusual visual effect of these curtains, others doubt its practical convenience.

We are talking about curtains made of threads, they are also called "kiseya". They consist of hundreds of threads, fastened to each other from above, usually with a braid. There are several types of kisei on the market.

Plain Kisei

is a curtain of thin threads of the same color. Its width and length may be different;

chenille

such a muslin is thick, sometimes twisted threads;

with beads

beads are attached to some threads of such a muslin. This creates an additional decorative effect;

Rainbow

such filament curtains are no different from ordinary ones, except for the color. Kisei threads are painted in 2-3 or several colors;

With lurex

Lurex threads are woven into the threads of such a muslin, which looks more festive and unusual.

Kisei can protect from bright sunlight. At the same time, unlike fabric, it easily passes air.

This "invention" came to us from hot countries, where such curtains were very popular several centuries ago. Kiseya separated the premises, used in bedrooms, in restaurants and in other establishments where romance and mystery were needed.

And now Kisei is used not only on windows.

It can be used to divide zones in one room, use it instead of an interior partition, or hang it above the door as a decoration.

Filament curtains will look good on high window and other openings, on balconies, in large rooms.

How to choose

In order not to be disappointed with the use of filament curtains, carefully approach their choice. Threads should be heavy. The material from which they are made is dense and silky.

If you are not satisfied with the length of the curtains, you can shorten it, but before that, carefully inspect the muslin. The thread after trimming should not unravel or fray.

If the muslin is located in a place where many people will pass or in the kitchen, it will often have to be washed. This may cause some difficulties.

Care

Many doubt whether to buy such curtains and think that it is difficult to care for them. This is not true. You just need to follow certain rules.

Before washing the filament curtains, tie them tightly with other threads at a distance of 30-40 centimeters. Place in a separate laundry bag in the washing machine. Use a gentle cycle for both washing and spinning.

Use fabric softener after the main wash. This will make it easier to “comb” the threads. Dry the muslin in a tied form, but not completely. Gently straighten it along its entire length to avoid creases.

Untie damp curtains and hang them in their place. If there is confusion, it is more convenient to eliminate it on weight.

If the muslin is hanging on the aisle, divide it into two parts and attach along the edges, freeing the passage.

Threads can be decorated as you wish: weave into braids, fasten with clothespins and decorative tassels.

With your own hands (master class)

You can now buy kisei very inexpensively, but for those who like to do everything with their own hands, we offer a small master class.

STEP 1 Find suitable threads, approximately 2 mm thick. STEP 2 Find a plank that fits the width of the space you are decorating. STEP 3 Cut the threads. The length of the thread should be equal to the length of the height of the muslin plus two slat widths. Multiply all this by 2 and add 5 cm for the error.

For example, the height of the muslin is 2.5 m, the width of the plank is 5 cm. (250 cm + 5 cm + 5 cm) x 2 + 5 cm errors = 525 cm = 5 m 25 cm, the length of one thread.

STEP 4 Fold the thread in half, make a loop at the fold and insert the bar into it, tighten. We repeat, the threads should be at a distance of 3-5 mm. It is better to secure each loop with glue. STEP 5 We wrap the space between the loops with a thread from a skein so that the bar is not visible in the gaps. It is possible not to do this if such a result suits. STEP 6 Attach the bar to the desired location. We cut exactly the threads to the required length.

Kisei is ready.

Reviews

Larisa: “My husband and I bought a white muslin for the kitchen. Looked very good, but got dirty instantly. Washed in the machine. After that, I had to throw it away, as the threads got tangled too much. I won't buy this again".

Irina: “I saw with a friend how great curtains made of thread look in the interior. I also bought it and hung it in the hallway. Really like! They are chocolate-colored, I hope they don’t get dirty soon. ”.

Kisei is a very delicate and beautiful piece of decor. With proper care, it will serve you for many years.

But keep in mind that homemade muslin is more difficult to care for. Therefore, before you make or buy it, consider how you will care for it.
