I really dreamed of getting into this department, not only because it is the best in Russia (according to QS) in the field of computer science and that this is Moscow State University and all these show-offs around it. The main factors were: very strong mathematics, they teach you how to create algorithms and think, and not stupidly waste time in some language, very good job opportunities, there is time to think about what to become (that is, you can do programming, data science, something closer to physics, mathematics and science, economics, analytics, consulting, information security, applications to anything (medicine, for example, models of diseases and their analysis using a computer, biology, ANYTHING)) and other points about which are below. The first semester was mind-blowing from the scale and fundamental nature of everything at the VMK and at Moscow State University in principle, from what kind of things they do here and what opportunities there are (after a regional city of 500k people), it was impossible to believe that I ended up here... After graduating 1st semester I can confidently declare the following:

PROS:
1) Strong mathematics, but without hellish fanaticism (obviously weaker at the Faculty of Computer Science). The first two courses teach: a very complete course (+-mechanical mathematics) of mathematical analysis (it is very useful, including for programming), algebra and a little angeom (useful tools for any activity such as matrices) (it is only in the first year) (sometimes it seems a little excessive, as if it were a waste of time from the point of view of a freshman), other sections, for example discra.
2) Computer Science, not Software Engineering. That is, at a deep level, the entire structure of the PC, great attention to algorithms and data storage structures, and that’s all, and not some languages. 3) An atmosphere in which you want to study. There is no atmosphere of competition with classmates (due to the point system in many universities this is a problem), everyone tries to help each other. There are almost all the necessary resources: good canteens and buffets, an extensive library, a reading room, places on the territory where you can sit and sort something out or just relax, computer rooms with good computers, good Internet and much more.
4) Teaching staff. Teachers with knowledge of their field, working in various related industries, with a desire to teach, and not cram something into your head for the session.
5) Departments. A huge number of departments, various areas from general mathematics, mathematical physics (classical disciplines) to information security, programming, machine learning and other modern ones. And therefore, you can spend another two years in the first two years thinking about which of the ~18 departments is closest and doing what you like best. There are departments where you can go and not waste much time studying and start working already in the 3rd year, there are those where you really need to study, and not just spend time.
6) Not the worst trade union committee, all these social activities and that’s all. Personally, I don’t particularly participate in the life of the faculty, but if I want, I’m sure I’ll find something to my liking. There are often some faculty events and general MSU parties...
7) The connections you will make here are no less important than what you will learn. Every day you will communicate with future leaders of various companies, future scientists and just good people.
8) Employment. (not showing off) Yandex consists of VMK-schniks, like a man made of water, and in general, what to hide everywhere in Russia in it, mathematics and everything about it will be waiting for you with open arms! Also, a diploma and knowledge are valued in the West (I’ve heard it many times, but I don’t know for sure)

MINUSES:
1) They expel without a second thought (this is a trap:) don’t go here:)) We don’t stand on ceremony with students at all, everything is quite strict in this sense. Attendance is not particularly monitored and absences are not particularly punished. IMPORTANT: ONLY 2 TAKES, if after 3 attempts you fail to pass something, then that’s it, it’s over. On average, 50 people are expelled in the first semester of the first year (not me :)). Mostly, due to exams, the duds and the very weak are expelled, since they recruit quite a lot, including paid workers.
2) Exams. There is quite a lot to worry about when it comes to exams. Good knowledge does not always mean passing without problems. There are teachers who always give failures to almost everyone (fortunately there are not many of them), but mostly they are more or less adequate.
3) Faculty building. A coffin, a box, a system unit... Oh, how can we not call this “wonderful” second academic building, from the windows of which you can see the beautiful world. In general, it is a gray Soviet building, which is impossible to look at without sadness. There are few sockets (it’s a faculty for a minute), it’s quite gloomy and dirty inside, sometimes there’s a smell from the toilets, people smoke at the entrance (the smoking room was closed for some strange reason, but it was better for both smokers and non-smokers)... Hmm, how? like the most unnecessary faculty (one of the few normal faculties at Moscow State University, in fact).
4) Extra discipline. That’s why we need Russian language and speech culture in the second semester, history and life sciences in the first, physical education (well, this, unfortunately, is mandatory for all students everywhere), physics is a dubious need for most (fortunately there is very little of it and it’s in the second, it seems, course)? It is clear that some faculties need to fulfill teaching hours, somehow support auxiliary departments at the faculty, fully implement educational standards, “broaden their horizons” and so on, but time is already short! It would be better if they made English stronger, otherwise in the strongest group we suffer from nonsense!
5) Pick up a little steam on matan and programming. It’s not critical, but judging by the first semester, closer to December, the seminars were full of galloping on integrals, and there weren’t enough hours to actually write any code.

MYTHS:
1) Pascal is horror, is it death, is it backward? Let me remind you that they teach you how to think and algorithms, most people initially more or less know Pascal and there is no need to waste time on syntax, but you can immediately learn cool things, anyway, everyone will then work in different languages. Moreover, then assembly language and C. And in the departments anything!
2) Is FKN better? Who cares, it’s stupid to waste there, here is good math and algorithms, and not just their implementation.
3) Are the teachers only old people? No, there are many young teachers.
4) Is it very difficult to study? Average. Well, that is, you can’t do nothing, but you can study quite regularly and have free time. Mechanics and Mathematics is tougher in this sense, but don’t be fooled, you still have to work hard!
5) Is education too classical, they don’t teach modern technologies? Complete nonsense! They teach fundamental concepts, such as various data structures, algorithms... In the departments you can be assigned exactly where you want to work later and there are quite modern technologies, such as machine learning, modern graphics with ray tracing and that's all!
6) Is Mekhmat cooler? NO :) Actually, who cares. Mechanics and Mathematics is very much about theoretical matesh and that’s all, but they also do a good job there, they tinker like hell with all the mathematics, deal with some applied problems, VMK is more about programming, using matesh for some real problems, but here you can also go into theorist.
