Why this emblem?

The glider is an appropriate emblem on many levels. Start with history: the Game of Life was first publicly described in Scientific American in 1970. It was born at almost the same time as the Internet and Unix. It has fascinated hackers ever since.

In the Game of Life, simple rules of cooperation with what's nearby lead to unexpected, even starting complexities that you could not have predicted from the rules (emergent phenomena). This is a neat parallel to the way that starting and unexpected phenomena like open-source development emerge in the hacker community.

The glider fulfills the criteria for a good logo. It"s simple, bold, hard to mistake for anything else, and easy to print on a mug or T-shirt. It could be varied, combined with other emblems, or modified and infinitely repeated for use as a background.

Although it is already 2018, homography attacks are still a very popular attack vector among cybercriminals. For example, in March 2018, unknown attackers attacked users of the famous cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The fact is that shortly before the incident, the criminals conducted a series of successful phishing campaigns, as a result of which they collected credentials from the accounts of many users of the resource. This was mainly done using fake domains that imitated the real Binance domain using Punycode.

At the root of this problem is the use of Punycode - a standardized method for converting sequences of Unicode characters into ACE sequences, which consist only of alphanumeric characters, as allowed in domain names. Punycode was designed to unambiguously convert domain names into a sequence of ASCII characters.

Unfortunately, many of the world's alphabets have characters that look exactly the same as their Latin counterparts (see the full list). This feature is exploited by attackers to carry out homography attacks. So, in the summer of 2017, unknown people targeted users of the WhatsApp messenger. They sent victims links that supposedly led to the messenger’s official website, when in fact the links led to the fake domain shһatѕarr.com.

In 2016, in the same way, google.com to ɢoogle.com, and at the end of April 2017, Chinese researcher Xudong Zheng, that Chrome, Firefox and Opera browsers are vulnerable to virtually undetectable phishing attacks, with which attackers can register fake domains that are practically indistinguishable from the real resources of Apple, Google, eBay, Amazon and many other companies.

Now Farsight Security analysts have studied many examples of homography attacks to find out how attackers operate most often. To conduct the study, experts monitored the Internet for almost a year: from May 2017 to April 2018, analysts collected statistics on all domains that use non-Latin characters.

In total, the DNS cache scan helped detect 99,432,594 non-Latin domains (IDN, internationalized domain name). Of these, 35,989 were allegedly related to 466 major international brands from a variety of areas (from banking to retail). In fact, these domains belonged to criminals. In 91% of cases, these domains led to sites that the attackers tried to pass off as legitimate representatives of various companies on the network.

In most cases, characters from only one alphabet were used to spoof domain names. This is due to ICANN rules, according to which it is forbidden to mix different alphabets in a domain name (this measure is precisely aimed at countering homographic attacks). However, Farsight Security's analysis also revealed a number of domain names in which criminals ignored these rules and mixed alphabets.

The most popular method for implementing such homographic attacks turned out to be the use of Cyrillic characters, namely, mixing Latin and Cyrillic alphabet. Researchers believe that the popularity of the Cyrillic alphabet can be explained simply: it is very similar to the Latin alphabet. In second place in popularity was a combination of Latin and Greek characters, and in third place were Latin, Greek and Cyrillic characters combined.

Experts note that the use of characters from other alphabets in combination with Latin ones allows criminals to significantly increase the number of potential domain names that imitate a particular brand. Moreover, such variations in homographic attacks are much more difficult to detect.
