What should be the size of the business card photoshop. What are the sizes of business cards? Tips on paper weight, style and cost of business cards

A business card is one of the oldest ways of self-presentation in the business world, which plays an important role in shaping the image of a businessman or an entire company. Correctly, a well-designed business card can contribute to the growth of the company's popularity, increase the number of customers and partners. A bad one, on the contrary, can ruin even the most impeccable reputation. Therefore, everyone should treat the design of their business card with special trepidation and responsibility. It concerns absolutely everything: the general design concepts, selected colors, fonts, the size of the business card itself, the quality of the paper on which it will be printed.

Of course, if you want your business card to be special, different from all that you have ever seen. No one can forbid you to make it the way you see fit. But for the manifestation of a bright individuality, it is better to experiment with color, design, fonts, but not the size of the product itself.

Business card standards in different countries

IN Europe The standard business card size is 85x55 mm. We advise you to get a batch of business cards of this format and, accordingly, in English, if you have European partners.

"Across the Ocean" traditionally use business cards of the following sizes:

  • USA- 88.9x50.8 mm
  • Japan- 91x55 mm

Interestingly, the accuracy of jewelry in the size of business cards for the Japanese plays a huge role. Are you going to establish business relationships with Japanese businessmen? It makes sense to think about how to print cards in the size traditional for their country.

IN Russia and countries CIS generally accepted for business cards is the size of 90x50 mm. It is this size of business cards that is most often found in our country, therefore, in printing houses and printing shops, the equipment for cutting cards is “by default” set up for this size, and any non-standard order, accordingly, leads to the need to reconfigure the equipment parameters.

Why exactly 9 by 5 centimeters? This tradition has been carried on since the times of the USSR, where they liked to keep strict records of everything in the world. Paper was expensive (in fact, now it cannot be called cheap either), so every millimeter counted. Industry experts have calculated that this is the size of business cards that leaves the least amount of waste.

A very interesting approach to the design of business cards in China. Russian entrepreneurs who have business contacts with representatives of this country will do well to take them into account. Everyone knows that for life, the Chinese are guided in everything by the Taoist practice of Feng Shui. According to her, certain numbers are considered lucky, while others, on the contrary, bring trouble. For example, they avoid the number 9. Considering that this figure appears in the business card parameters adopted by us, it is necessary to neutralize its negative impact, for example, by dividing the business card into two unequal parts by color.

Non-standard business card: pros and cons

In the practice of every printing house and printing workshop, at least once there was a client who wanted to make business cards larger or smaller than the “standard”. Basically, they are driven by the desire to stand out from the rest. But whether such a move will play into the hands is a huge question. The fact is that business card holders and other accessories for storing business cards, up to special “pockets” in wallets and purses, are made under the standard size of 9x5 cm for Russia, larger business cards simply won’t fit into them, and smaller ones risk falling out. That is, the most rational decision would still be to give preference to the usual size, and to make a business card unusual due to design.

A business card, it would seem, is an ordinary piece of cardboard or plastic with the contact details of its owner. However, the culture of exchanging business cards has long outgrown the nursery period with enthusiasts and imitators, and today is a whole trend in the design industry. The exchange of business cards has also ceased to be just a habit, it has become something more: the norm. Of course, in the relevant areas, but today both individual lawyers and huge corporations, as well as a conditional schoolboy have their business cards: in all this wide spectrum, this phenomenon has become commonplace.

A business card for a business person is also an integral part of everyday work. In such conditions, a competent design of a contact card is necessary, because it becomes the face of the owner in the eyes of the person who received it. In this aspect, everything is also very vague: there are both business cards-works of art, and plain business cards only indicating the name and preferred method of contact. But there are rules for design, developed over years of practice, numerous trials, successes and no less rare mistakes. We suggest you familiarize yourself with the main ones.

You should be very careful about the size and idea of the business card. Of course, this may be a matter of purely taste or principle, but it is worth remembering some nuances:

  • The usual place for storing business cards is a wallet or an inventory book, in many models of the former there are special compartments for contact cards. Their sizes are adjusted to the general standard - this means that such a business card will not be stored where everyone else is, in an atypical place for its new owner. At the right time, such a business card will surely disappear, tear up to a complete loss of information content - in a word, they will not be able to contact you at the right time just because your business card differed in size from a certain single standard.
  • Is there a single standard? Yes, but it differs slightly for different states and unions of countries. For example, among Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians, the size of 50x90 mm, or five by nine centimeters, is taken as a common standard. In the EU, for example, the format 55x85, or five and a half by eight and a half centimeters, is in use, while this is really monitored, as you might guess, in Germany: in their understanding, the owner of a business card must strictly follow general standards. In the USA, almost identical to European sizes, and they also come into vogue with cards with magnetic tape to attach to the refrigerator door. The Japanese have one of the largest cards: the average size is 91x55 mm, which makes it necessary to get cards of their format when traveling to Japan on a business trip. As for the figure, almost everyone is unanimous: such a card should be a rectangle. However, it should be understood that GOST for business cards does not exist - this is an individual matter, so exceptions are still not uncommon. The trendsetters in the world of business cards are the British: it was they who created the now popular narrow business card, and the Italians adore these things, made in the form of miniature books.
  • Women's business cards, as a rule, are somewhat different from men's - they are slightly smaller, a millimeter on each side. This is a tribute to the tradition that existed back in the days of the USSR.
  • If a large business card is inconvenient, then there is nothing wrong with business cards that are visually smaller than the standard ones. In Western countries, this option is now very popular.
  • Professionals advise making business cards that slightly differ from the standard in a big way: it is much easier to find such ones even by touch in a pile of others. On the other hand, it is important not to overdo it so that the new holder does not think of her owner as a selfish type.

Proper use of fashion trends and standards in the selection of card sizes, as we can see, plays a crucial role. Business cards themselves differ into several types according to the criterion of its original owner:

  • Executive business cards. Their goal is to acquaint the recipient with some information, but they represent people who have many business meetings and do not want to “shine” work and personal contacts. It is often used at various meetings, where it is distributed to everyone, so the size of such business cards is not carefully monitored during production: they have an introductory function, but extremely rarely a contact one.
  • personal business cards also do not differ in passion for formalities and rules. They are most often stored in caskets and lockers, so their sizes vary greatly from case to case, a radical departure from a rectangular shape is not uncommon.
  • business cards. The recipient can be either a person or a company, but it represents one person - for example, a businessman or a lawyer. It always contains: name and surname, company, position in the company, contacts. It is they who almost always have a standard shape and size, as well as a design approved by the leading designer of the company.
  • Corporate business cards. Unlike business business cards, they represent the company, and not its individual employee, therefore they can be either strict in design, if the company is set up conservatively, or bright, non-standard, using non-standard sizes of the card itself. The second option is found in companies that have their own recognizable product design style - in this case, the business card will be the bearer of all elements of a recognizable corporate style, that is, the information on it is transmitted not only through text, but also visually.

Thus, a business card must be of a certain size in order to perform all its functions qualitatively: transferring your coordinates to other people and keeping your contact information for a long time. It is recommended to pay special attention to this item for people of creative professions who love originality in everything: it is still desirable not to have anything against the standard size of a business card, as this directly affects the nuances listed above. It is not forbidden to work with the design, the font of the inscriptions - you can even make your card vertically oriented by placing text information not along the long side of the rectangle, but short: such a business card looks fresh and is well remembered.

Business card design requirements

If you are preparing a business card layout for their production, then you need to keep a few rules in mind in order for the final result to meet our expectations. We list the main points:

  • Ready to print. Your layout should be completely ready and do not require any additional preparations for printing - this file can be printed as soon as you receive it, simply by sending it to production.
  • The method of transferring the file does not really matter, but you should carefully consider the condition of the physical media if you decide to send us a layout using them: the disk must be free of scratches and other damage, the Flash card or USB device must not contain virus programs that can harm the layout, or even just suddenly delete it. If the file is sent by E-mail, its name should be written exclusively in Latin letters.
  • Remember: a file containing a business card can have only a few types of extensions, depending on the program in which it is drawn. Files from the Corel Draw program must have the .cdr extension (The program used must not be younger than the 14th version), layouts from Adobe Illustrator - .ai or .eps, files prepared in Adobe Photoshop must have only .tiff resolution, and if you do not send the source from the program, then the common extension is .pdf (read by a program, for example, Acrobat Reader).

Above are the extensions of popular programs in which almost everyone draws business cards. Below for two of them, Corel Draw and Adobe Photoshop, we list the basic requirements.

Corel Draw

  • Make pagination of business cards. If the business card is double-sided, then place its sides on two pages of the program.
  • The size of the working field (page) on which the business card is shown must match its size!
  • Avoid putting text on a business card closer than 4mm to the cut line. If you place the text closer, then during production some letters may be cut off, and important data will be lost, and the entire batch will become money thrown to the wind. That is, on each side of the card, the text block must be at least 4 mm from the cutting line.
  • All parts of the card that are supposed to be placed right through should protrude at least 2 mm beyond the borders of the future business card.
  • All fonts in the layout should be converted to curves.
  • If the business card contains a company logo or some kind of brand name, then in order to improve the display quality, they should be drawn in vector graphics.
  • The possible “Transparency” effect, if it was used when developing the business card design, should be transferred to one layer with other elements.

Adobe Photoshop

  • All the layers used in the design of the business card should be combined into one in the final version.
  • All unnecessary layers, additional paths and crop marks should be removed from the layout.
  • Remember: lines less than 0.03 mm thick are completely invisible when printed!
  • Use CMYK and Grayscale color models.
  • On a printed business card, a raster with a value of up to 5% will not be visible - at higher values it will be visible.
  • If you need the exact reproduction of any colors in a business card, then you should attach a color profile to the layout, and specify the color itself in the Panton Process.
  • Remember also that the maximum brightness should not exceed 320% if you want a business card on coated paper, and 280% if the paper is uncoated.

The rules for the arrangement of textual information coincide with the requirements for layouts from Corel Draw.

Keeping all these rules in mind and following their instructions when preparing a layout for production, you are guaranteed to receive business cards of the quality you need for use.

The Comint company has been producing business cards for a long time and has excellent experience both in the development of layouts and in their physical implementation. By contacting us and deciding to order business cards from us, you can be sure of an excellent end result!

√ Your application

Business cards are cards with important information. They are compiled in a generally accepted form, for example in the form of a plastic card. They are classified as a business tool of a person who cares about his reputation. They have become part of the lives of busy people. All types of business cards are necessary for the exchange of information. It is important for business people to know what is placed on them.

Types of business cards

Now there are business and personal business cards. The first type is necessary to create an effective business. Typically, the classic type of design is used, which indicates the name of the company, last name, first name, patronymic. There may also be other information. Below is the phone number, address and other data for communication.

There are types of business cards for government officials. Usually they designate the coat of arms and the flag of the country. There are secular business cards, which are slightly different from the classic ones. They indicate the invitation of a person to a certain holiday.

Personal

Personal types of business cards contain information about the owner: full name, address, phone. They may be common to spouses. As additional information, Skype and the address of the account on social networks are placed. Products are handed over to relatives, friends, relatives.

With the help of personal information, it will be possible to make a favorable impression when meeting. There may be images on the product. You can arrange it at will, since there are no special requirements for this.

Business

Such business cards are needed in communication with business partners. Therefore, the product contains business information - position, phone numbers, mail address, fax. Their printing is more expensive, because you have to implement different ideas. Plastic business cards are often chosen, which look much more prestigious.

Expensive and high-quality paper, beautiful colors are used. Embossing and other modern methods are used. Plastic business cards will be the best recommendation for business people.

Corporate

To create products, a single template is used, in which there are similar frames and colors. Then all employees will have the same business cards. They contain the company logo, name, address, position, phone number, and hours of operation.

The main side may have a drawing, usually in full color but inexpensive. After all, the product is required for business, and not for beauty. If it does not have the coordinates of an individual employee, then it will be a standard flyer.

Manufacturing methods

Business cards are created using inkjet and laser printers. Screen printing, risography, thermal lifting, offset printing, laser cutting and engraving are also used. With each method, quality products are obtained.

Digital printing is the most popular way to make products. It also has disadvantages, for example, the price of work will be more expensive if you create more than 3000 copies in comparison with offset printing. Also, the choice of paper will be small, and fine lines may not be noticeable.

Offset printing is a traditional way of creating information products. There is an exclusive print and large-circulation offset. Working with an inkjet printer is fast and easy. But there is also a minus for this method - paper, which must be special. This is an amateur job option, so it is not suitable for employees of a reputable company.

silkscreen

Many types of business cards are created using screen printing. Often this method is chosen to maintain the image of the company. Business cards can be printed on any medium. The method allows performing selective filling with varnish, thermal lifting, fixing important information on the original material.

Often metal or plastic is chosen as the basis. Reliable equipment allows you to perform work at the highest level. The seal should emphasize the image of the company or a particular person. Developing firms should order bright and original products. And this is possible with the use of new technologies, such as screen printing.

Manufacturing technology

The process of creating business cards is simple. It includes several steps:

  • creating a layout;
  • its coordination with the customer;
  • seal;
  • sheet cut into separate cards.

For business cards, you can choose any font, color of letters, it all depends on the type of product. Cards will look presentable if all their characteristics correspond to the status of a person or company.

Dimensions

The standard business card size is 90x50 mm. But under the order, you can make products of other parameters, but an additional fee is charged for this, since you have to configure the equipment.

There is a standard business card size according to the European standard, it is 85x55 mm. Such products will be useful when visiting other countries. They are needed for holding international exhibitions and symposiums organized in Russia. Some printing equipment will require more designer paper, which increases the cost of production.

Business card holders and other accessories for storing business cards are made to size 9x5. Larger or smaller settings simply won't do. Therefore, it is wiser to use the standard size, because it is not only cheaper, but also allows you to properly store it. Moreover, the text of the business card on such a product will fit completely.

Paper

There are a few things to keep in mind when making business cards:

  • design;
  • method and quality of printing;
  • paper type.

The type and strength of the card depends on the quality of the paper. Now many types of materials are produced. The density of cardboard for business cards should be from 200 g/m 2 and more. The strength of the card depends on this indicator. If you use thin paper, then the products will look simple. An excellent option is a density of 250 g / m 2.

Business card paper may vary in surface finish. It can be ordinary coated with a smooth surface, textured, designer, material for crushing and embossing, touch cover and others.

The most common is white coated paper. Text and graphics lie flat and smooth on it, and colors look vibrant. Paper can be used to make simple cards, as well as unusual ones. Beautiful cards are obtained with textured linen paper. It is desirable to choose a density of 260 g/m 2 . Horizontal, vertical grooves serve as an imitation of natural linen material.

Metallic paper is ideal for making durable business cards. It has a pearly finish. There is a large selection of colors. If you choose colored paper, then you should take into account that the white color changes with the corresponding shade of the background. It is advisable to use bright colors.

original cards

Appearance establishes the first contact and also creates an opinion about the owner. Thanks to modern technical means, there are many tools for obtaining unusual products. Original business cards are created using non-standard materials: CDs, wood and metal.

Printing capabilities are needed to transform cards after printing. Often, UV varnishing is used for this, which serves as an additional protection against damage. Original business cards have a decorative design. This method can be used for varnishing the entire surface, as well as individual elements of the print.

Embossing is considered another way to transform a card. It is carried out by hot and cold method. Embossing can be done with foil. It comes in the color of gold, silver, mother-of-pearl. The card turns out bright with original appearance. There is relief stamping. With this processing method, a relief image is created.

Thermal lift allows you to get a relief surface. This processing method uses thermographic powder, poured onto wet paint. The card is heated, the powder swells, and therefore a convex surface is obtained.

In order for the product to acquire its original shape, it is subjected to cutting or cutting. For this, special equipment is used. Each of these methods is necessary to get beautiful business cards. In order for the cards to look presentable, it is necessary to choose the best materials for them, as well as reliable technology.

Many customers, when talking with a print shop employee, often find themselves in a difficult situation when it comes to the format of the product. Specialists, as a rule, operate with standard international sizes. In this article, we want to take a closer look at what standard sizes are, how they look and what they are used for.

ISO Standard Paper Sizes A, B, and C Series

ISO was created in 1946 by twenty-five national standards organizations. The abbreviation stands for International Organization for Standardization - International Organization for Standardization. ISO standards are advisory in nature. It is worth paying attention to the fact that in more than 90 countries of the world these standards are adopted as national ones. In Russia, some of them are accepted as state (GOST). ISO develops standards in many areas, but we will look at paper-related standards:

ISO 216 - A and B series paper standards
ISO 217 - RA, SRA series paper standards
ISO 269 - C Series Envelope Standards

Paper sizes in printing

For the use of paper in the printing industry, the ISO 217 standard establishes two series of sizes: RA and SRA. In these series, the sheet sizes are slightly larger than in series A and B, so that the printer can accommodate the necessary technical information. After trimming, a finished product of standard size A or B is obtained. In Russia, printers use paper sizes established in GOST 5773-90. First of all, this GOST is focused on book and magazine production, but paper of standard sizes is also used for the production of any other product.

Business card sizes

Most countries in the world use the metric system of measurement and adhere to ISO standards for paper sizes. However, in the UK and especially in the US, the inch-based system is still widely used. Many countries have to deal with these dimensions, especially when using computer technology. Often, American format names are found in printer settings and graphics packages, such as CorelDraw. Therefore, it is also useful to familiarize yourself with them.

English and American sizes of paper and envelopes

To date, there are no standards for the size of business cards. You can choose the size that is most convenient for you. Nevertheless, in many countries there is an internal idea of a convenient business card, the standard size of which is followed by most residents. In addition, manufacturers of other products are guided by the established size of a business card: business card holders, purses, business card envelopes, folders with a place for business cards, etc. Below are the sizes of business cards accepted in various countries.

We hope that our article will help you navigate the complex world of formats and standards and make it easier to communicate with print shop representatives!

If you want to make a themed business card, a vintage style business card is a good choice. In this tutorial, I will show you techniques that will help you achieve an interesting effect.

Let's start.

Step 1

We will start working on a business card by determining the parameters, taking into account the requirements for printing. Create a new document by pressing CTRL + N. In the image properties settings menu, enter the following values:

  • Width - 3.5 inches
  • Height - 2 inches.
  • Resolution 300 ppi
  • Color mode: CMYK

Step 2

We received a blank for a standard business card. Create a copy of the background layer ( CTRL+J).

The next step is to determine the working area. The ruler will help us with this. To call the ruler, press the key combination CTRL+R.

Next, click the mouse at the base of the upper scale of the ruler and drag the auxiliary line to the top base of the business card. After that, drag an auxiliary line from the left scale of the ruler to the left edge of the business card. Repeat this step twice more and set guide lines on the right and bottom border of the business card.

Step 3

When working with business cards, do not forget about the "cut-off" area.
Switch to Image > Canvas Size(Image > Canvases). Set new values for height and width: width(width)- 3,75 inches; height(height)- 2, 25 inches

Step 4

If the text (and sometimes the image) comes close to the border of the business card, it doesn't look nice. Now we will set the borders of the working field in which the main information will be placed.

The working field can be limited in several ways. For example:

  1. "Approximately". To do this, use a ruler (the technique from step # 2). The dimensions at the edges are reduced by 0.125 inches.
  2. Or you can enter clear parameters for the auxiliary lines. This will give you a more accurate result. To enter new values, go to View > New Construction Line(View > New Guide).

Then set the following values:

  • Top margin: horizontal (Top Margin: Horizontal) - 0.25 inches
  • Bottom margin: horizontal (Bottom Margin: Horizontal) - 2 inches
  • Left margin: vertical (Left Margin: Vertical) - 0.25 inches
  • Right margin: vertical (Right Margin: Vertical) - 3.5 inches

Step 5

We have prepared a business card template! Now let's get down to designing the layout.
Switch to the copy of the background layer. Activate the tool Gradient(Gradient tool) and use it to set the overall color.

Note that you can always change the color scheme in the Gradient Tool Options Bar by clicking on the gradient box. You can also look at all the gradient styles, experiment with their settings (the icons next to the gradient color box).

Translator's note: the author used:gradient type - "Mirror"; colors - #c28c44 -#c5bb88-#c28c44.

Step 6

It's time to add texture. I will use the texture of old paper in this work. You can use your own resources, or find suitable material in photobanks. When the texture is selected, transfer it to your document, place it above all previous layers.

Step 7

Standing on the paper texture layer, go to blend mode layer (blend mode) and set it to overlap(Overlay). This simple technique will combine the texture with the overall color.

Step 8

Fine! Now we have prepared the business card for the next step - filling it with content. Our first element will be the logo.
A well designed logo will add charm and a more professional look to any business card.

In this example, we will create a circular sun logo.
Activate the tool Ellipse(Ellipse Tool). Create a new layer on top of the rest. Holding down a key Shift draw a circle. Choose the color of your choice.

Translator's note: author uses color #211a26

Step 9

For further work, we need to rasterize the circle shape that we just drew. To do this, right-click on the circle layer and select " Rasterize layer"(rasterize).

Step 10

Any symbol must be added to the round base under the logo. Of course, you will have your own branding, and for this example I will use the sun figure from the standard set.

Activate the tool Arbitrary figure(Custom Shape Tool). From the gallery of form options (which is located above), select the appropriate sample. Add a new layer, above the circle layer, and draw the selected shape on it.

Step 11

Hold down the key CTRL and click on the logo shape icon in the layer. This will create a selection.

Step 12

Go to the rasterized circle layer. Without deselecting, press the key DELETE. Deselect. Turn off the visibility of the logo shape layer.

Step 13

In my work, instead of standard stitches, I will use a dotted line, which will give a little retro style. Now I will show you how to do it.

Activate the tool Brush(Brush tool). From the set of brushes, choose a standard 5 px hard round brush.

Step 14

Now, click on the brushes panel icon. Switch to " Intervals" (shape subsection) Change the spacing to 200%. This will turn the round brush into a series of dots.

Step 15

Create a new layer by clicking CTRL+SHIFT+N. Then, using the brush we just set up, draw a straight dotted line (hold down the shift to make the line straight).

Step 16

Duplicate the resulting line several times. Arrange the lines however you like.

Step 17

Let's add a few extra lines for the design. Decrease the brush size to 3 pixels and paint lines on the top and bottom of the business card.

Step 18

Let's create an accent at the bottom of the informative part of the business card.
To do this, activate the tool Rectangle with rounded corners(Rounded Rectangle Tool) and draw a rectangle shape in the area of the lower small lines.

Step 19

Fine! Now let's just add our text. We use several different retro fonts that can be downloaded from dafont.com.

Step 20

Let's move on to the final details! Select all layers. Right click on the layers panel and from the submenu choose " Merge layers"(Merge layers).

Translator's note: I recommend that you do not merge all the layers at once. For further actions, it will be more convenient to do the mixing as follows: select the layers with the logo and lines - and merge them. Next, select the text layers and merge them. You should have three layers: text, with a logo and lines, a layer with a background.

Step 21

Download any vintage or grunge brushes you like and decorate your business card. You can use this site to download the desired brushes.

Translator's note: The author used the Eraser tool. A grunge brush was selected in the tool settings. A good effect can be achieved if you add a layer mask to the logo (text) layer and use grunge brushes (black color) on the layer mask.

Step 22

Change the blending mode of the vintage patterns layer and the information layer to Base darkening(Color burn).

Translator's note: If you followed the advice from step 20, then you need to change the blending mode for three layers: vintage pattern, text, logo + stitches.

Step 23

Finishing touch. Duplicate the information layer, this will give expressiveness to the main part.

We have finished the lesson. The effects that you have learned to do can be safely applied to the design of posters, flyers or postcards.
