Upholstery of the back of the bed with your own hands. How to make and design a headboard: options, workshops, decor ideas. Unusual headrest in the style of "Patchwork" - making your own hands

The bed takes center stage in the bedroom. On it you can sleep, relax, read, watch TV.

The most important element of the interior design of the bed is its headboard.

Let's talk about what the head of the bed is, and how you can make it yourself at home.

The first option is classic, made of wood. How the wood is processed determines how the bed will fit into the style of the bedroom. Strictly executed headboards do not decorate, they are made rectangular or slightly rounded. Such furniture elements are varnished or painted.

Aristocratic products are decorated with a wave-like ornament, while elegant ones made in the Baroque, Empire or Classicism style are real masterpieces.

The metal version is an ancient type of headboard. This option is used in many styles of bedroom interiors.

This headboard design is suitable for Romanesque and Scandinavian style.

The option that uses mosaic or natural stone is another popular type of backrest.

It often involves sea pebbles, glass, ceramics and other materials.

Designs in which textiles are used are a fairly common occurrence.

Their wide distribution can be explained by the coziness and comfort brought by the fabric to the interior of the bedroom.

Certain types of textiles are suitable for different styles of bedroom design.

Velvet is used for baroque or rococo, and satin is suitable for empire style.

The bedroom furniture looks stylish, the decoration of which is made partially of leather.

The leather upholstered element adds chic and sophistication to it.

The design in the form of shelves allows you to efficiently use the space of the bedroom, freeing up extra space in it.

It is only necessary to make sure that the items on the shelves do not accidentally fall on sleeping people.

The mirrored headboard is suitable for those who are not committed to Feng Shui.

This teaching does not use a bedroom mirror.

Materials and tools

It is quite difficult to sheathe furniture for the bedroom with material. But if you try hard, do not rush, you can get a good result. It is better when the design is made by the master. But it's never too late to learn something new.

Before you get to work, you need to prepare everything you need.

You will need:

  1. A sheet of plywood with a thickness of 8 to 12 millimeters.
  2. Foam rubber sheet from 50 mm and above.
  3. A piece of decorative or technical material. It should cover the area of the head of the bed.
  4. Decor details for decoration.

Headboard materials.

The plan cannot be done without the following tools and materials:

  • Electric drills;
  • Jigsaw;
  • A set of drills;
  • Furniture stapler;
  • A set of staples for a furniture stapler;
  • Construction knife and scissors;
  • twine;
  • Screwdriver and hammer;
  • Clay;
  • Two sets of buttons;
  • Sewing kit.

Set of tools.

Preparing the back frame

First of all, we free the frame from the old skin. From the rear, we nail or fasten a pair of boards or plywood with screws along the length. If you wish, extend the base with 5x5 cm bars. They can not be attached to the frame. They will hold the braces that hold the padded skin in place.

Behind the frame will look ugly. You can cover it with plywood.

Hole marking

We mark the holes that we will drill for fixing the material. The template for it will be a perforated Pegboard, in which tools and other attributes are stored.

You can circle the already transferred holes on the perforated plate so as not to forget what has already been done.

All work consists of the following steps.

If something prevents the free entry of the needle on the back of the base, the holes should be made through for a strong sheathing.

We fix the foam rubber and fabric

We take the foam rubber, dividing it into two pieces in size, and place it along the front of the back with notches to the bottom. Align the sides and top of the foam rubber. We cut off the excess.

We fasten the foam rubber on the sides and bottom with a stapler.

We drape with textiles. We leave a margin along the edge from 25 to 30 cm. We put the structure vertically draped with fabric and rest it against the wall. It should be noted that when it is sheathed, we will need free access to it.

It's good to find a partner to hold her.

We fit the buttons

Now we are waiting for the most time-consuming work - covering the buttons with fabric. The set of buttons has instructions for use, carefully read it and get to work. But first, a few tips for work.

Remember to use good glue if you don't want the button caps to fall off over time.

  • We cut the fabric with a margin, a little more than the template included in the kit. The excess can be cut off after we drive the button cover into shape.
  • We put the fabric and the lid into the form from the side, then carefully insert it.
  • Before inserting the button legs, grease its edges with a drop of glue. Excess solution is removed with a napkin. It must dry at least overnight so that the prepared buttons can be used.

We sheathe the structure

To carry out this procedure, you need to stock up on a long needle with a large eye, simple buttons and twine. You need to tie the knots tightly on the rope. Several should be made.

The knots on this smooth twine are easy to untie, but it passes freely through the foam rubber and fabric.

We insert a long piece of rope into the needle and put on a button through all the holes, as if it were being sewn on. We tie it into several knots.

Make sure that you tie the knot well (and more than once) so that it does not untie over time.

We pass the needle through the upper center hole that we drilled and move from the back of the headboard to the front. We hold the needle strictly straight. We pierce the foam rubber with a needle, gently pressing on it from the outside. We take out the needle that appears.

Be sure to keep the needle straight.

We fasten the dried button from the front of the headboard. For this:

  • We pass the needle through the eye of the covered button;
  • We make a turn of the thread around the button and again thread it into the eyelet;
  • We drown the button in foam rubber, at the same time, pulling the thread (the loop holds the button in this position);
  • Cut off the twine, leaving small tails;
  • We tie the ends of the twine at the bottom of the button, by analogy with shoelaces;
  • We tie a knot on its reverse side, we do this repeatedly.
  • We cut off the excess rope, hide the ends;
  • We “pinch” the matter, forming it with folds.

Make sure all folds are facing the same direction.

After fastening the button, we form a fold that goes up. Then we fasten the next one and again form a fold. Having sewn four buttons, we stretch the material and fix the folds with staples.

The folds should look the same.

In a similar way, we fasten the subsequent buttons and form new folds of the 1st row. At the end of it, we continue to flash the remaining surface.

Following all the rules, every diamond on your back will be perfect.

Now small folds are formed and fastened after each button to get beautiful diamonds.

You have to micro crease with your fingers after adding each new button to get the perfect rhombs.

DIY headboard - 50 photo ideas:

The head of the bed is the hallmark of the bedroom, because this attribute always attracts attention. From this article you will learn how to make a headboard with your own hands so that it blends harmoniously with the overall interior of the room.

Ideas and Options

First of all, you should decide which option is right for your bedroom. If you like to read books before going to bed, pay attention to the soft headboard. This option is ideal for this purpose, because it is convenient to rely on it. You should also consider tilting headboard ideas, which many people like.

If your room is decorated in country style and there is an emphasis on sustainability, you can resort to a high wood headboard above the bed. For fans of the French provinces, a headboard in the Provence style is suitable.

Young families can make a beautiful headboard from improvised materials. In most cases, this option is the most acceptable, because the newlyweds do not have enough free finances for other ideas (decors with panels, photographs, pillows are suitable).

For this reason, when choosing an idea for a headboard, you should rely on your capabilities, imagination and abilities.

Popular headboard ideas include:

  • decorative panels. They can be made of wood, plaster, textiles, plastic. You can also choose soft panels that many hardware stores offer. A wall decorated with several types of panels looks good. Come up with a fancy pattern or puzzle, surprising guests with your originality;
  • for rooms that are decorated in the style of Provence and Country suitable an old barn board or carved wooden shutters. You can resort to using doors at the head;

  • pillows hung over the bed will help fill the headboard space. You can use multi-colored or plain elements;
  • quilted headboard always present in high quality hotels. If you want to fill your bedroom with luxury elements, pay attention to this option. It is easy to make such a headboard with your own hands, spending very little money on its creation.

materials

You can decorate the head of the bed yourself, using a variety of materials. There are many ideas for its design from wood. You can use even painted boards or knotty, with a little processing. The main role is assigned to the harmony of the combination with the overall interior of the room.

If you are decorating a room in the Baroque style, a headboard in the form of a fence will not suit you, and every person should understand this. Even if your bedroom has a simple interior, in which there is a classic set from a furniture salon, the palisade described above will also be out of place.

Such accents should be supported by furniture, lamps, accessories and other interior elements so that harmony is present. If you want to make a simple wooden headboard, such as plywood, this option does not need much support.

Metal headboards are considered the old-timers of the bed "kingdom". They are actively used in various interiors, because such material is suitable for a romantic bedroom, as well as for a strict Scandinavian setting.

Mosaic and stone can be used as an alternative material for the headboard. From them you will make interesting patterns with elements of sea pebbles, tiles and even glass pieces.

Textiles, like wood, are often used to decorate beds. The material is able to bring a cozy atmosphere into the room. A wide choice of material allows you to realize even the most daring fantasies. For example, heavy velvet will be relevant for Rococo or Baroque, and golden satin is suitable for an empire-style room.

A leather headboard is a stylish option. Some people prefer the eco-leather option as it is more budget-friendly. Based on the embossing, coloring of the material, such headboards will harmoniously fit into any interior.

The laminate headboard looks good on the wall. Many people decide to decorate the space above the bed with this material. The headboard is original and stylish.

The subtleties of the constriction

Many people decide to reupholster the headboard to give it a more attractive look. The carriage coupler, which has been known since the 18th century, is most in demand. Previously, such a lining flaunted on carriages, from where such a name came from. Today, this method is used in the design of furniture, as well as other decorative elements. The second name of the upholstery is capitone.

In order for the result of your work to look spectacular, you need to sheathe the headboard with expensive and rich material that will look good with a large number of folds. Such materials include velor, suede. Many people choose to upholster their headboard in leather.

You can decorate the screed pattern using squares or rhombuses. Buttons are used as rivets, which are covered with a similar material. If your headboard will have beads or crystals, choose items with a similar color or contrast.

To carry out the hauling, you should prepare the following set of tools:

  • furniture board or plywood, which will be used as a base;
  • high quality fabric. Material should be purchased with a margin of 30 cm more than the length and width of plywood;
  • foam rubber, the thickness of which is 5 cm. It should also be adjusted to the parameters of the selected plywood;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • buttons tied with fabric. They must have an ear;

  • drill;
  • knife;
  • crochet hook;
  • glue;
  • laces. You can use rope or twine. Choose the thickness according to the diameter of the eye of the button;
  • stapler for furniture;
  • wall mounts and self-tapping screws.

Constriction subtleties:

  • for such activities, you should choose a plywood sheet in the shape of a rectangle. Optionally, you can cut the original shape that you like best;
  • cutting of foam rubber is carried out on the basis of the dimensions of the plywood itself. You will need to mark up the material, indicating the area where the buttons will be attached. Most often, buttons are placed in a checkerboard pattern. Using a sharp knife, make holes for the buttons in the foam sheet;
  • it is very convenient to make holes due to a metal tube heated on fire. You need to heat the pipe on a gas burner and make holes quickly. In one approach, you can get about 2-3 holes. Do not forget to put a piece of board under the material so as not to damage the floor surface;
  • now you can put the material on the plywood and use a pencil to mark the places for the holes and make them with a drill. Use a wood drill with a diameter of 8 mm;

  • the next step will be to glue the foam rubber to the plywood, taking into account that the button holes in both sheets are identical;
  • on top you need to place one layer of synthetic winterizer. Remember to leave an allowance of 5 cm for each side. A fabric is placed on the synthetic winterizer, the stock of which is 10 cm on each side. Once you complete these steps, you can turn the future headboard over and fasten the fabric to the plywood using a stapler;
  • At this stage, you can start preparing the buttons. You can drag them with textiles personally or give them to the masters. Pass the string through the eye of each button. Use shoelaces that are at least 15 cm long and tie them in a knot. A crochet hook is required to thread the string through the plywood;

  • feel the hook from the side of the fabric. Use a ruler to measure the distance to the button next to it and make a small hole. For this purpose, you can use nail scissors. Using a hook, pick up a button with a cord and thread them through the hole;
  • the lace must be stretched and qualitatively attached with staples to the back;
  • The last step is to attach and mount the headboard to the wall. For this purpose, you will need self-tapping screws.

If you are familiar with the basic intricacies of the headboard upholstery, the upholstery made will be able to compete with the purchased version. Do-it-yourself hauling allows you to use your imagination, as well as create an exclusive version.

Master classes for beginners

Many people prefer to make their own headboard instead of buying a ready-made one. Arranging the space above the bed yourself will cost less than choosing from ready-made options. It is worth noting that the personal idea will be unique, which also has its weight in creating the interior of the bedroom.

Making a headboard is not a complicated procedure. There are ways that allow you to make bed decor quickly and without any hassle.

For work you will need to prepare:

  • plywood sheet, the thickness of which is identical to the width of the sleeping bed. You can choose the height as you wish;
  • thick fabric. Buy textiles with a margin. For these purposes, use a synthetic winterizer or batting. You will need 3-4 layers of material of the same size as the plywood sheet. Consider a margin of 10 cm for each edge;
  • universal glue, nails, stapler for furniture.

Step by step guide to making a bed headboard:

  • from plywood you will need to cut a rectangle or an arbitrary shape;
  • synthetic winterizer or batting is laid out in layers. You will need to glue each layer separately, securing the first piece to the plywood sheet;
  • now you should wrap the allowance of the back of the future headboard and secure it with a stapler;
  • now you can turn the workpiece face up. Treat the material with glue and carefully roll the fabric over the surface of the padding polyester. Eliminate the appearance of folds and wrinkles - the surface should be smooth;

  • when the fabric is dry, wrap it on the back of the workpiece, stretch it and attach it to the plywood sheet with a stapler;
  • the drawing will be created using nails. You can choose any pattern. Among the simplest options is a frame that is located along all edges. To create it, you will need to nail the nails evenly and deeply, keeping the same distance between them. This rule is present in any pattern;
  • to create a straight line, you will need to put two dots on opposite ends of one side. Observe the rule that points are placed at the same distance from the edge;
  • now you can drive nails into points and pull a thread between them. Draw dots along the thread with a pencil. Remember that the distance between the points must be the same;
  • in the indicated places, you can hammer in nails that will help create a drawing in the future;
  • Now you can attach the headboard to the wall.

How to attach yourself?

There are several ways to attach a headboard:

  • against the wall above the bed. You will need to screw two loops with self-tapping screws to the back of the headboard. The element is hung on the bolts;
  • to the frame. This method consists in drilling a pair of holes on the sides of the outer part of the bed frame. Through these holes, the headboard will be screwed with screws;
  • you can also make a headboard in the form of a free-standing structure. You can purchase ready-made wooden legs or build them yourself. The legs are screwed to the headboard, and the structure itself is installed between the bed and the wall.

How to decorate?

Not every person decides to put the bed in the center of the room. As a rule, this piece of furniture is placed near an empty wall or with its back to the window. If you decide to use the latter option, you just need to choose a beautiful design for the window. If the sleeping bed is located near the wall, you can use the numerous decor options, choosing the right one, depending on the interior of the room itself.

Provence style

Such rooms are endowed with romance, light and comfort. The interior, decorated in this style, is a stylization of an old French village. It has a large amount of fabric with floral images, light colors. In such a room, antique wooden furniture will look. To finish the headboard, you can use painted boards or old-style doors. You can resort to a soft headboard made of light fabric with small flowers.

Loft style

In such a room there is freedom and conciseness, brutality and simplicity. Loft-style interiors favor rough brickwork on the walls along with wooden ceilings and floors. The room should have a minimum number of partitions and furniture. Decor should be used in small quantities, but it must be present. The headboard should be kept simple, without pretentiousness.

Japanese style

The interior will combine screens, fans, as well as podium beds. A small number of pieces of furniture made from natural dark-colored raw materials are allowed. The headboard must have the correct shape. You can use hard decor or soft fabric overlays with national ornaments.

You can decorate the headboard with a fan or canvas, on which there are prints in the form of national themes.

How to change the old to the new?

If you already have a headboard and want to replace it with a new one, there are several options for resolving the issue:

  • you can carry out the constriction of the old headboard. You can use this method to replace a hard element with a soft one, which is especially suitable for lovers of reading before bedtime;
  • some people do not want to deal with the hauling of the old decor, but arrange a “soft back” directly on the wall. This can be done by stretching the urethane foam panels and fixing them to liquid nails above the bed;
  • artists will love the idea of painting a headboard;
  • the use of a picture and a canopy will also help to quickly update the familiar interior.

Replacing an old headboard with a new one is not a problem. You can easily update this decor element using improvised tools or paint, or replace an outdated item with a new one. It all depends on your desire and possibilities. You can change the headboard every week, based on the tone of your bedding, or leave a stationary one that will delight you for many years.

When you come home from hard work, you want only one thing: to relax in the comfort of your bedroom on your favorite bed. It is she who is one of the most important places for us, you spend a third of your life on it, so she must be comfortable.

The very first thing that catches your eye when you enter the bedroom is the bed. It should be comfortable and beautiful.

But few people think about how to ensure this pleasure for themselves. If you are an exception to them, then this recipe for making a chic bed is for you. You can imagine an unimaginable number of ideas for decorating this center of the bedroom, or you can start with the simplest - finishing the bed. But how to sheathe a bed with your own hands?

Of course, you can buy a finished bed in the store, but the range and price sometimes leave much to be desired. To resort to the services of manufacturing the desired model of a bed to order is not very profitable for our time and wallet. It remains to take this, only at first glance, a difficult and painstaking matter into your own hands.

Tools and materials

Choose a non-staining and wrinkle-resistant fabric for finishing the bed.

For this process you will need:

  • foam rubber;
  • batting;
  • plywood or hardboard;
  • construction stapler, scissors;
  • any fabric for upholstery;
  • glue.

The first thing to do is to choose the fabric for sheathing according to the size and shape of the chipboard. It should extend beyond the sheet by 20-40 cm. Thus, there will be a supply of fabric for fastening.

The same must be done with foam rubber. It should be 8-13 cm larger than the bed frame, no matter what shape it will be - round or square. At the same time, decide in advance which edge of your bed is soft or hard? Depending on this, select the upholstery option.

Workflow features

First upholstery method

Build a bed frame and hammer plywood onto it.

On a pre-prepared bed frame, you need to stuff plywood or hardboard. At the same time, leave a distance at the top of 5-7 cm in order to fix the foam rubber. The foam rubber is stuffed on top of the plywood, while it is superimposed on the excess part of the plywood, which was left in excess. It cannot be nailed without creating a quilted effect, so use special glue.

When you have finished stuffing the foam rubber, you need to stretch the fabric on top and nail it to the bottom with staples at the bottom of the frame. In the corners, you need to collect the fabric in 2 folds, which you put on top of each other and hammer with staples at the junction. You can not stuff the staples on top of each other, otherwise it will just be a waste of them. The more you use them, the better the fabric will hold up. Try to nail the staples as far away from the edge of the fabric as possible.

Stretch the fabric over the foam rubber and secure with a stapler,

Here you can also cut out excess fabric, just do not cut too much, because then arrows and other types of damage may appear on the surface of the fabric. Or the upholstery can simply fall off the frame.

Never stretch the upholstery fabric too tightly: the seams should not be bent. If the pattern or thread strips lie flat and you can't pull the fold over the fabric, you can be sure that you did everything right. Make sure you choose the right fabric.

For different upholstery methods, there are different fabrics to suit you. If you plan to place the mattress in a recess in the frame, which is suitable for a round bed, resort to this upholstery method.

Second upholstery method

Attach the foam rubber to the prepared plywood sheet with glue or a stapler.

In the same way, as in the first case, the frame is upholstered first with plywood, and then with foam rubber. However, if your covering is not even on the sides, that is, cords and buttons will be used to create notches in the material, it is recommended to use batting. This will not create a gap at the top of the bed. Just wrap the frame in the same way, you can additionally apply more fabric at the bottom to hide the fastening points. You can nail plywood to the bottom. Thus, the frame is completely upholstered. We put the finished mattress on top and the process is over.

The process of making recesses with buttons in the lining is not particularly complicated. You can draw foam rubber in advance, nail and thread threads through the fabric, which will subsequently stretch the fabric and buttons will be sewn on top. Or you can drive decorative nails into the places marked on the fabric and simply glue the buttons. They should be the same color as the upholstery, so you can create a quilted finish.

It is best to choose materials from natural ingredients.

Upholstery fabric should be selected depending on your preferences. You can upholster beds with velor, velvet, microfiber, jacquard, flock.

If you have allergies, then sheathe the bed with natural materials, such as cotton or linen. The latter options can be used for the warm season as a removable upholstery. Cotton does not collect dust, and linen is a durable material. Upholstery colors may also vary depending on the season. In summer, light upholstery, in winter - dark. At the same time, they should be combined with curtains or decorative pillows, a bedspread.

Before you start sheathing the bed, carefully look at the frame for cracks and chips.

  1. Before removing the old coating, be sure to inspect the frame for cracks or damage.
  2. In most cases, it is recommended to change both the packing material and the springs. It may have defects, or a lot of dust has formed there from time to time. It is best to additionally fix the new filler with muslin.
  3. Choose a fabric with a protective coating. Do not upholster it with pile fabrics or elastic materials. They stretch, and you are tormented to change the upholstery. Colored prints on fabric are not recommended. With home upholstery, minor defects will be noticeable.
  4. Make a removable cover or upholstery for the bed.

Thus, it can be easily cleaned and changed in the off-season or for wear.

If you want to make a cover that can later be removed, then you need to measure the frame in advance and create a pattern according to it. Then, from pieces of fabric, sew a cover to size. For the sides of the cover, it is better to use elastic bands.

To make an upholstered bed beautiful for a long time, it is best to make upholstery in 2 layers.

The first is non-removable, and the second is as a cover. Fixed upholstery is best made from high-strength fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, satin, bamboo fabric. In this case, the outer upholstery should be in relation to the inner one so that there is no friction or static between them.

There are a lot of major mistakes to avoid. If the frame wood is of poor quality, then cracks may occur on it, which will subsequently lead to tears of expensive fabric. Therefore, never sheathe a bed made of bad wood without an upholstery base with expensive fabric or leather. For removable upholstery, carefully choose a fabric that will not stretch. Therefore, it is very important to choose a high-quality fabric for covers. If you want to wash the upholstery, then make sure that the fabric is washed well and does not lose its color.

If you want to further decorate your updated frame, make a headboard for it. In the same way, make upholstery, only for pieces of plywood folded in half, and attach it all to the bed or to the wall. And our perfect bed is ready. Thus, you can not buy a new bed, but simply update its upholstery. Having done all the work, you will look differently at your updated bed.

Perhaps the most important accent in every bedroom is the beautifully designed headboard. Since the furniture market offers standard monotonous options, and you really want an exclusive in the bedroom interior, you can turn to your creative abilities and make a headboard with your own hands.

Kinds

Depending on the method of installation and shape, headboards come in two types: with an inclined back and a simple vertical panel design.

If we consider the reclining headboard, then it is worth paying attention to its clear advantage in providing comfort for the back while leaning back while watching TV or reading books.

Among the advantages of the panel are saving space in the room(Unlike a reclining headboard, which extends the length of the bed, taking up extra floor space, a straight panel takes up only non-functional wall space.)

The sloping headboard can be made by hand from a wooden profile up to 20 mm thick or from a chipboard profile. Details are drawn on the sheet, blanks are cut out, which are carefully sanded and leveled with a file. By means of wooden dowels and epoxy glue, all parts are fastened together.

After checking the strength of the bonding, you can proceed to finish the structure: they use both a self-adhesive decorative film under a tree, and facing panels, upholstery fabrics. The backrest is attached to the bed frame with screws or bolts with nuts.

Key points when choosing a headboard

The main parameters when choosing a headboard are appearance and comfort. For those who spend a lot of time in bed reading books and watching movies, a soft headboard is more suitable.

Given the fact that the headboard will often lean on, you should choose an upholstery fabric that will be easy to care for (wear-resistant artificial or genuine leather is best as a material).

The hard back option is suitable for those for whom product design is more important than comfort and functionality (for example, it is very inconvenient to lean on a wrought iron headboard and put a pillow on it). Here you can experiment with the shape of the backrest, taking into account the interior and the concept of the bedroom. Of the materials, wood, metal, plastic profiles are suitable.

As for the choice of headboard fabric, here you should pay attention to the following nuances:

  1. the back of the selected fabric should fit into the interior of the bedroom;
  2. it is desirable that the fabric is wear-resistant, and caring for it does not bring inconvenience;
  3. when choosing textiles with a large pattern (flowers, geometric shapes) of bright colors, it is recommended to limit yourself to only these prints in the interior so as not to overload the appearance of the room.

Having considered the styles of the interiors of the premises listed below, you can decide on the appearance of the headboard for the bed, which will harmoniously fit into the bedroom, create coziness and determine the necessary accents:

How to make your own hard back?

If you decide to make the head of the bed yourself, then the first thing you need to decide is the material from which the frame will be made, upholstery materials, appearance and rigidity. Rigid headboards are made from wood, laminate, prefabricated wall panels, plastic, metal, and even ceramic. If a wooden headboard without facing materials is chosen, then the final version of the product should be smooth, even, without cracks and natural recesses in the tree.

In order to avoid the difficulties of grinding raw wood, choose a finished profile from an array or a parquet board.

To make a hard wood headboard you will need:

  • wooden base up to 20 mm thick;
  • fasteners (bolts, nuts, self-tapping screws, hinges);
  • a sheet of sandpaper;
  • electric drill;
  • wood pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • construction tape.

First you need to draw a sketch on the wooden profile of the future product with a simple pencil and mark the points where the fastener holes will be located.

It must be borne in mind that the width of the backrest must correspond to the dimensions of the bed.

After that, having carefully verified all dimensions, cut the product along the contour, make holes (from two or more for each side).

All roughness gently grind with sandpaper. If desired, the workpiece of the product can be varnished. After the surface has completely dried, this structure is attached to the bed frame using self-tapping screws or bolts, or hung on hinges on the bedside wall.

How to make a soft headboard yourself?

simple upholstery

Making a soft back will require more trouble, but its rich appearance is worth these material, physical and time costs.

To make such a headboard you need:

  • Chipboard profile or plywood, with selected height;
  • upholstery fabric, the length and width of which will exceed the dimensions of the plywood by about 20-30 cm to be captured by the stapler;
  • synthetic winterizer, foam rubber or batting (grab for fixing with a stapler must be taken into account similarly to upholstery fabric);
  • fasteners (bolts or screws);
  • furniture glue;
  • drill;
  • furniture stapler.

Draw a sketch on a sheet of plywood, mark holes for fasteners. If desired, draw a figured edge. Carefully cut out the workpiece.

The selected soft filler (synthetic winterizer, foam rubber or batting) is laid out on the surface of the headboard, adjusted to the dimensions of the product.

If a layered synthetic winterizer is used, then its first layer is fixed with a furniture stapler on the reverse side, and the last layer of the synthetic winterizer is sprayed with glue.

After the glue dries, the sheathing is pulled on top (velor, tapestry, leather fabric or eco-leather materials are most often used as sheathing materials). The selected fabric is distributed evenly, without clamps, over the surface of the workpiece and the edges of the padding polyester and fabric are fastened with staples from the furniture stapler from the wrong side. Using self-tapping screws or bolts, the product is mounted on the bedside wall or on the frame of the bed itself.

Quilted in the technique of "carriage coupler": a master class

Lovers of the classics will love the quilted headboard using the "carriage tie" technique. The method of execution of this technique was invented in France for the design of carriage saddles. Luxurious design of upholstered furniture in this technique is used to this day. And making recessed buttons in a lush space is not difficult at all. The workpiece is cut in the manner described above.

Holes are marked on the surface of the headboard frame, they are drilled and a layer of foam is covered on top. In appropriate places, holes are also drawn on the foam rubber. Then, with the help of glue, the foam rubber is fixed on the surface of the headboard (at the same time, you should pay attention that the holes on the foam rubber correspond to the holes on the frame of the product). A synthetic winterizer is applied over the foam rubber and upholstery textiles are pulled over it (capture 10-15 cm on the wrong side). Fasten the fabric and synthetic winterizer with a stapler on the back of the product.

When choosing accessories - buttons in the color of the main product, they are pre-sheathed with the same fabric as the head of the bed. You can use multi-colored buttons and even glass ones.

A tourniquet is pulled through the base of each button and tied into a knot. Each button is placed in the prepared hole on the front side of the headboard.

Using a crochet hook or needle, thread the tourniquet into the hole, pull it and fix it on the back of the product. Thus, folds appear on the fabric in the area of \u200b\u200bbuttons. If desired, to hide all the seams and staples, the underside of the headboard can be covered with the same upholstery fabric. With self-tapping screws or with the help of canopies, the headboard is also fixed on the wall or on the bed frame.

From pillows

A very original and simple way to decorate the head of the bed with decorative pillows will be. The backrest does not require a plywood profile. No drilling or cutting required. And pillows can be found in everyone’s house, or they are easy and not expensive to buy in a store.

The original pillow headboard will look no less comfortable than velor or tapestry. In addition, they are so nice to lean on, because they are soft and comfortable. Ease of installation allows you to quickly install such a headboard. It is enough just to attach a decorative curtain rod at a certain height above the bed and hang pillows with the help of loops.

The headboard made of pillows also has the advantage that if the old covers are tired, they can always be replaced with more interesting ones.

We sew a cover

In order to sew a cover on the head of the bed, choose a suitable upholstery fabric. Previously, in order for the fabric to shrink, it is washed at a temperature of 30-40 degrees, dried and ironed.

After that, a rectangle is cut out on the fabric according to the following formulas:

  • product length = A + 2h + 10 cm + 2 cm;
  • product width = B + 2h + 10 cm + 2 cm;
  • A - the length of the pillow;
  • B - the width of the pillow;
  • h - foam rubber thickness (you can reduce the pattern to 0.5 cm, so that the cover fits the product tightly);
  • 10 cm - capture on each side of the wrong side;
  • 2 cm - grip on the seams.

Measure 1 cm + 5 cm = 6 cm along each edge and draw a line. Draw out 4.5 cm, draw another line. A diagonal is drawn through the corners of this rectangle so that its intersection is at equal intervals from the corners. After taking into account the allowance of 2 cm for the seams, cut out along the contour. Repeat the same steps for each corner.

The bed is the main and central piece of furniture in any bedroom.

People spend about a third of their lives in a dream, which means that the choice of a bed and bedding must be approached seriously and responsibly. Designers are constantly creating innovative models of mattresses and beds, so there is a huge variety of bedroom interior furnishings. Most of them not only fulfill the main purpose of providing a person with a comfortable sleep, but also help to decorate the interior, giving it a certain style and originality.

Installing or updating a headboard is the quickest and easiest way to transform the overall mood of a bedroom. Among the different options, the most popular is a soft headboard for the bed, which, by virtue of its design, gives the sleeping place a special cosiness, softens sharp corners, and sets up for a comfortable rest. Of course, this item can be purchased in stores separately or as an element of the bed frame, but many people prefer to make a soft headboard with their own hands, giving free rein to imagination and creative ideas. We offer several workshops on how to make an interesting headboard, and also look at other models of craftsmen and designers for inspiration.

Do-it-yourself soft headboard "Carriage coupler"

Carriage tie is a decoration method that was widely used in the 18th century to decorate carriages (hence the name). Today, this method is used for upholstery of upholstered furniture and interior items. The modern name for the carriage screed is capito. In order for the result to look really impressive, it is recommended to use expensive, rich material that looks good with numerous folds, such as leather, velvet, velor, faux suede. Light cotton with a small flower is a completely inappropriate fabric.

The tie pattern itself can be made in the form of squares or rhombuses; buttons covered with the same fabric, beads, crystals in color or in contrast are used as rivets.

Materials and tools:

  • plywood for the base (furniture board);
  • high-quality fabric (with a margin, 25-30 cm more than the length and width of the plywood base);
  • foam rubber about 5 cm thick (according to the size of the plywood sheet);
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • covered buttons with eyelet;
  • drill for drilling plywood;
  • sharp knife;
  • Crochet hook;
  • glue universal;
  • strong lace (rope, twine, so that the buttons go into the eyelet);
  • furniture stapler with thickened staples;
  • scissors;
  • wall mounts and screws.

Progress

Take a sheet of plywood, you can use a rectangular one or cut an interesting shape. In this example, two boards are used: 200 cm by 60 cm and 140 cm by 60 cm. Cut the foam to fit the plywood base. Mark on the foam rubber the attachment points of the buttons, for example, in three rows in a checkerboard pattern.

An interesting way to make holes is to use a heated metal tube. Heat the tube on the stove for 3-4 minutes, then make holes with quick movements. At one time it will be possible to make 2-3 holes, then heat the tube again for 15-20 seconds. Before this, be sure to put a board under the foam rubber so as not to spoil the floor.

Lay the foam on the plywood and mark the holes with a pencil. Drill holes with a 8mm wood drill bit.

Glue the foam to the plywood. Make sure that the holes on the foam rubber and in the plywood match.

Place a layer of synthetic winterizer on top with a margin of 3-5 cm on each side. Lay the fabric on the synthetic winterizer with a margin of at least 10 cm on each side. Turn the plywood over and secure the fabric with a furniture stapler from the back.

Prepare your buttons. You can cover them with fabric yourself or take them to the workshop. Thread a string at least 15 cm long into each button and tie a knot. For this project, 62 buttons were needed. Take a crochet hook and put it through the hole from the side of the plywood.

In front, from the side of the fabric, feel for the hook. Check the distance from the adjacent button with a ruler and make a small hole with nail scissors. Crochet the cord with the button and thread it through the hole.

Pull the cord tight and staple it securely to the back.

Attach with self-tapping screws and hang on the wall. Ready!

Upholstered headboard with nailhead pattern

Materials and tools:

  • plywood sheet;
  • a piece of dense fabric (in this project, a canvas for paintings was used);
  • nails;
  • glue (spray glue was used in the project);
  • synthetic winterizer or batting;
  • scissors;
  • furniture stapler.

Progress

Cut out a rectangle of the desired size from a sheet of plywood.

Lay 3-4 layers of batting or synthetic winterizer, leaving a margin of 10 cm on the sides.

Using spray adhesive, glue the first layer of batting to the plywood, then the next layers to the previous one.

Attach the batting with staples to the back side, pulling the material well.

Flip the headboard over. Spray the surface of the batting with spray adhesive and, starting on one side, gently roll the fabric over the batting. Press well and smooth the fabric so that there are no bubbles, wrinkles or distortions.

Once the glue has dried, attach the canvas to the back of the plywood. Stretching the canvas well, wrap it around the frame and secure with a furniture stapler.

With the help of nails, you can make any ornament, including imitating a carriage tie. For this head of the bed, a neat thin frame was made around the perimeter. To do this, mark with a pencil two points in adjacent corners at an equal distance from the sides.

Drive the carnations in there, but not completely, but so that it sticks out above the surface. Tie a string around the head of one nail, stretch and tie around the second. So we made a straight line so as not to draw on a light fabric with a pencil.

Then, with a pencil along the line, mark the places for driving in nails at an equal distance from each other. Make small marks that the nail head will cover.

Hammer in the nails. Instead of nails, you can use furniture buttons.

Attach the headboard to the wall with the fasteners.

Do-it-yourself soft headboard with pillows, tile imitation

Materials and tools:

  • a large rectangular plywood sheet for the base (in the project 150 cm by 75 cm);
  • small plywood squares (for this project it took 18 pieces measuring 25 by 25 cm);
  • piece of fabric;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • furniture stapler;
  • scissors;
  • glue.

Progress

Prepare plywood pieces. In the big building supply stores, you can ask to have your plywood cut to size. Cut a piece of fabric into 18 squares (it may be a different number in your case). Squares should be with a margin of 5-10 cm on each side.

Lay the plywood squares in the middle of the fabric.

Using a furniture stapler, attach the edges of one side. Be careful that the staple does not go through the plywood with the fabric. You can insert the staples slightly at an angle.

Make a crease in the corner, stretch the fabric well and secure the corner with staples.

So, you have fixed one side and two corners, making it look like a "pocket". Now, adding a staple on each side, fill the space between the plywood and the fabric with batting or synthetic winterizer. Try to have practically no filler closer to the edges, and a plump “slide” in the middle.

After filling the square with padding polyester and securing the sides, fasten the last remaining side and corners with staples in the same way.

Do the same for the rest of the squares. If the fabric has a pattern, try to keep it the same on all parts. You can also use different fabrics to create a multi-colored mosaic composition.

When all the squares are ready, lay them on a large sheet of plywood and glue them with all-purpose glue. Follow the correct location of the pattern. Try not to have a large distance between the squares, the joints should be barely noticeable.
