Fiberglass wallpaper in the interior. Glass wallpaper pros and cons Glass wallpaper

Interior decoration is a complex but fascinating process in which everyone can realize their creative potential and bring to life the most daring undertakings. Recently, fiberglass wallpaper has been popular in the market of finishing materials. There was a time when they were used only in office, warehouse and industrial premises. But once the designers realized that this material can perfectly fit into the design of living quarters, especially since it allows you to regularly change the style of the room. In this article, you will learn what fiber glass is and how they are classified. In addition, we will consider the technology of gluing this material to walls and ceilings.

Glass fiber is a covering for walls and ceilings that is woven from glass fibers. In fact, they can be compared to knitted fabric - the production technology is similar. At high temperatures, thin threads are drawn from the glass, which are woven into a thicker "yarn". It may vary in thickness and design. Then from the "yarn" canvases are woven. Weaving can be simple or sophisticated. As a result, the canvases are treated with a special impregnation made on the basis of modified starch. It gives the material a stable shape. After gluing to the base, the impregnation contacts the glue and paint, dissolves and ensures reliable adhesion of all layers of the finish.

Historical reference

Today, designers from all over the world agree that fiberglass wallpaper is the most practical and interesting material for wall decoration. Depending on the design and painting, they can be stylish or presentable. The history of glass wallpaper began in the 1930s in Germany. Then colored glass was used for their production. Later, people began to use not only glass, but also wool for the manufacture of such wallpapers. At the beginning of 1960, the production of fiberglass was opened in Sweden. Today, large enterprises for the production of this material operate in the following countries: Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, China, Russia. Glass wallpaper has gained wide popularity as a finishing material mainly due to its strength.

Classification

Glass fiber is divided into two main types:

  1. Smooth. They have an even texture, low density and are popularly called "cobweb".
  2. Embossed. The density of this wallpaper is higher. They are used for finishing walls. It is almost impossible to tear such wallpaper during the process of gluing and using it. The drawing of their relief can be very diverse.

Additionally, fiberglass wallpapers are subdivided according to the degree of texture complexity. They can have a textured pattern (made on a simple loom) or more complex (a jacquard loom is used in the production of such wallpapers).

Advantages

Having figured out what fiber glass is, we will find out why they are so popular.

The advantages of the material include:

  1. Environmental friendliness. Glass fiber consists exclusively of natural ingredients: quartz sand, clay, soda and dolomite. Therefore, they "breathe" and are completely safe.
  2. Fire safety. Experiments carried out in natural and laboratory conditions prove that this material burns very badly, so the risk of ignition from a spark is minimal.
  3. Hypoallergenic. Glass fiber does not cause allergies and does not absorb dust particles. Thanks to this property, they can be safely used to decorate walls and ceilings in children's rooms.
  4. Moisture resistance. Moisture does not pass through the fiberglass, condensation does not collect on them. Moreover, fungi and mold do not develop on this material. In this regard, glass wallpaper has a clear advantage over liquid wallpaper. It is also important to note that if moisture gets on the walls covered with glass fiber, the texture of the material and its density do not change. All these features allow the use of fiberglass in the bathroom and kitchen.
  5. The rules for gluing fiberglass are so simple that even a person who has never glued wallpaper in his life can use this material.
  6. The material easily tolerates multiple paint changes. Usually, manufacturers declare that glass fiber can be repainted up to 15 times.

disadvantages

This finishing material has no drawbacks as such, but there are nuances that not everyone will like. For example, fiberglass, in comparison with paper and non-woven, is difficult to remove from the walls. Glass wall adhesive is relatively expensive. The material itself is also not cheap, but this cannot be called a disadvantage, since its price is fully justified and is a reasonable price to pay for durability.

Of course, there are also cheap homemade options. When buying such wallpapers, you should be prepared for the fact that they may crack or break in the process. In addition, after 2-3 paints, fake glass wallpapers lose their normal appearance.

Surface preparation

Glass wallpaper manufacturers position their products as "reinforcing, leveling material". Of course, this does not mean that they can be glued to unprepared curved surfaces with cracks and notches. Before you start gluing, you need to prepare the base.

Wall / ceiling preparation consists of the following steps:

  1. Getting rid of the old coating (if any).
  2. Leveling out large irregularities.
  3. Smoothing out minor irregularities with acrylic filler.
  4. Priming the walls.

If there was oil paint on the walls before, then special tools will help to remove it. If there is a need to get rid of old paper wallpaper, then you need to stock up on water, a spatula and a brush. The paper soaked in water can be easily lifted off with a spatula and removed.

You need to know this before gluing

The process of gluing fiberglass wallpaper is the same as gluing simple wallpaper. However, there are a number of nuances when working with this material:

  1. The process must be carried out with gloves and clothing that completely covers the body. The fact is that when cutting fiberglass, it crumbles at the cut. On contact with the skin, glass chips can cause irritation, similar to what occurs when working with glass wool.
  2. Glass fiber has a front and a seamy side. It is quite difficult to visually determine which side is which side. It is worth remembering that a roll of fiberglass is always wound in such a way that the wrong side is outside. Some manufacturers mark the front with gray or blue tape.
  3. When gluing the material to the surface, you need to use only special glue for glass wallpaper. It is made from specially processed starch.

The gluing principle is very simple. The procedure starts with a wall that has a window. A thin layer of glue should be applied both to the wall and to the canvas. If gluing is done on the ceiling, it is enough to grease only the surface with glue. Having spread the strip of glass concrete over the surface, you need to press it as hard as possible, and after a few seconds smooth the edges of the canvas with a roller. The strips of material are joined without overlap. The glue protruding from the edges is removed with a dry cloth. If painting is done immediately after gluing, then a slight error in the joining of the strips can be allowed.

Selection of paint

It is necessary to process fiberglass with a suitable material. Typically, styrene-butadiene, latex or acrylic paints are used for these purposes. The first two types are highly moisture resistant. Acrylic paint perfectly tolerates exposure to ultraviolet rays, and has a wide range of shades. Unlike other matte types, it gives the surface a shine. Regardless of the type, the paint for glass wallpaper is well absorbed and dries quickly, which allows you to work with it at any time of the year. It does not have a pungent smell, so it is not at all necessary to move out of the renovated premises.

Surface painting

The paint is applied to the glass wallpaper with a roller, in strictly vertical stripes. In principle, there is nothing complicated in this procedure, but there are some subtleties:

  1. Before painting the fiberglass, it is recommended to cover it with a thin layer of diluted wallpaper glue. It will act as a primer - it will increase the adhesion of the wallpaper with paint and hide the joints between the canvases.
  2. If the wallpaper has a pronounced texture, it is recommended to use a roller with a high nap for painting. It will allow you to carefully process all the irregularities. For painting fiberglass "matting" or "cobweb", a smooth roller is also quite suitable.
  3. It is recommended to paint in natural light. The fact is that artificial light refracts surfaces and makes some areas darker. Even professionals cannot apply paint evenly under artificial lighting.
  4. Smooth glass wallpaper is painted in 2-3 layers. If the surface has a complex texture, then there can be up to eight layers. At the same time, for a full-fledged painting of a wall with bright colors, usually fewer layers are needed than when working with pastel colors. Each subsequent layer is applied 12 hours after the previous one.
  5. If, when changing the wallpaper, the skirting boards were not dismantled, then they must be closed with masking tape. The area along the plinth, which the roller cannot paint over, is painted with a thin brush.
  6. Up to 600 ml of finished paint can be used for 1 m 2 of glass fiber wallpaper. Applying more may cause the material to peel off the wall. This is worth considering if you plan on repainting walls frequently.
  7. If you plan to change the color of the walls / ceiling more than five times, then it is better to use glass wallpaper with a pronounced texture. The fact is that with each new staining, the texture becomes less and less noticeable.

The myth about the dangers of fiberglass

It is believed that wallpaper made from glass can be harmful to health, and manufacturers are silent about this in order to preserve their reputation. Obviously, this myth is associated with a comparison of fiberglass with glass wool, the harm of which has been said a lot. Because of the glass wool used to insulate living quarters, "glass dust" allegedly flies in houses. Once in the lungs, it causes irreparable harm to the body. We will not find out whether this is so or not, if only because glass fiber is strikingly different from glass wool.

The thickness of the fibers used in the production of glass fiber is much larger than in the production of glass wool. Particles of this size cannot enter the lungs, and even more so as part of the dust. In addition, these fibers are more elastic, which means they are not as brittle. Tightly intertwined with each other, they create a single strong structure, which would be incorrect to compare with glass wool. It is also important to note that there is always a painting of fiberglass, which means that a person comes into contact with glass fiber only during the gluing process.

Proof of the safety of fiberglass wallpaper is the fact that in European factories that manufacture them, workers use only earplugs or earplugs of all possible protective equipment.

German experience

Glass fiber is most popular in Germany, the country in which it was invented. They are used to decorate various rooms, from children's rooms to hospital wards. The use of glass fiber wallpaper in the bathroom and in the kitchen is especially popular, since this material is absolutely not afraid of moisture. The fact that these wallpapers are widely accepted in Europe finally dispels doubts about their safety.

More recently, innovative fiberglass wallpapers have appeared on the building materials market, which are distinguished by their practicality and have already gained immense popularity, despite the fact that many consider them harmful.

Non-woven for painting also enjoys good reviews, since this coating is made of fiberglass and is widely used in repair work.

If you plan to paint glass wallpaper, then it is worth considering that cheap paint will quickly clog the wallpaper relief, and they will lose their attractive appearance after the next repainting.

Glass fiber pros and cons

Of the advantages of fiberglass, the following can be distinguished:

  • strength. Studies have shown that such wallpapers can last over 30 years, while the cost of glass wallpapers is low;
  • resistance to any influences;
  • the possibility of accumulating electrical charges, which protects the wallpaper from dust settling;
  • moisture resistance;
  • ease of cleaning, as glass fiber can be washed with detergents.
  • unusual "breathable" structure of the material;
  • reinforcing properties capable of protecting walls from cracking.

Due to these advantages, glass fiber mat for putty is popular. At the same time, affordable and high quality material. They can be glued to the ceiling, and in this case the reinforcing properties will be fully manifested.

Minuses

But glass fiber still has disadvantages, and these are:

  • this wallpaper can be glued only on perfectly flat surfaces, which must be carefully prepared before that: clean, putty and reinforce with a coarse mesh;
  • it is only necessary to glue the glass wallpaper on special glue, and the price of wallpaper glue is high, which can negatively affect the budget if it is necessary to carry out repairs in a large room.

As for the fears that such wallpapers are harmful to health, they are not justified, because fiberglass wallpaper has nothing in common with glass wool.

Moreover, this type of wallpaper is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and hypoallergenic and is able to provide an ideal microclimate in any room. Of the positive characteristics, it is also worth noting their fire safety.

Glass wallpapers come in a variety of structures, and the most commonly used decors are diamond, mat and herringbone. If you have good imagination and money, you can always buy original glass wallpaper with a designer pattern. In addition, you can order your own drawing, however, it will cost a little more.

Glass wallpaper

Around fiberglass, as a relatively new material for us, there are many myths and superstitions. Some say that all the advantages of this coating are just marketing, but in fact "wallpaper is like wallpaper". Others argue that glass fiber is terribly harmful, like glass wool, and therefore should be excluded from living quarters. Still others, on the contrary, declare that all of Europe glues only fiberglass on the walls, since there is nothing better. Where is the truth, and where is the idle fiction? Let's talk about the pros and cons of fiberglass and about the features of working with them.

What is fiberglass?

Glass fiber or fiberglass wallpaper is a wall and ceiling covering made of glass fibers. Glass fiber is compared to a knitted sweater - the technology of their manufacture is similar. Thin filaments stretch from glass - this is how "yarn" is obtained. This yarn is used to knit or, in other words, weave fabrics. "Knitting" can be simple or complex, creating various textures and patterns.

Glass fiber is produced mainly in Germany and Sweden. The quality of the material is traditionally high - European.

Fiberglass coatings are usually divided into two types: actual glass fiber and fiberglass(spider web, painting canvas). What is the difference? Basically, the surface of the glass fiber is decorated with a textured pattern, while the painting glass canvas looks like a smooth canvas. In addition, fiberglass wallpaper is more dense. It is a top coat for walls.

Fiberglass spider web is usually used to strengthen and smooth the surface, eliminate small cracks. For example, fiberglass is often glued to the ceiling before painting it - it is often easier to stick wallpaper on the ceiling (in this case, fiberglass) than to putty and sand.

Walls and ceilings with fiberglass spider web are perfectly smooth, like marble. But they look like they are just painted, not covered with wallpaper.

Advantages of fiberglass

1. Environmental friendliness and safety. Glass fiber is as safe as the glass in our windows. Only natural materials are used in the manufacture of the glass from which the fibers are drawn.

2. Non-flammability. As you know, glass does not burn. Glass fiber will never ignite, and when heated, it will not emit harmful substances.

3. High strength. If we talk about tensile strength, then in this parameter, fiberglass is approximately 2 times higher than their "vinyl counterparts".

4. Long service life. Glass fiber is more expensive than paper, vinyl, etc. But the cost pays off with a long service life, which can be 30 years. This is ensured by moisture resistance and durability. Glass fiber can withstand numerous stains.

Harm of cullets: truth or myth?

There is an opinion that fiberglass is harmful to health. The manufacturer supposedly knows about this, but for the sake of high sales, he hides from the consumer facts that indicate the inadmissibility of using fiberglass coatings inside residential premises.

Where did it come from? Apparently, from the analogy with glass wool, about the harm of which a lot has been said. They said that because of the glass wool, which was used to insulate houses, "glass dust" was flying in the living quarters. Inhaling it, people cause irreparable harm to the respiratory system. However, glass wool is located inside ceilings and partitions, which do not allow glass dust to pass through.

In any case, fiberglass wallpaper is strikingly different from glass wool. For the production of glass fiber, much thicker fibers are used than for the manufacture of glass wool. With this thickness, the fiber particles cannot get into the lungs in any way.

The fibers from which the wallpaper is woven are not only thicker, but also smoother, more elastic, and therefore less brittle. At the same time, they are tightly intertwined with each other, that is, they are firmly held in the composition of the coating.

In addition, glass wallpaper must be painted. The paint is an additional protective layer.

In Germany, for example, where fiberglass is most popular, it is used in hospital furnishings. Such a coating is also recommended for home kitchens, since surfaces covered with fiberglass are absolutely not afraid of moisture.

Fiberglass wallpaper is acceptable in children's rooms by German standards. Glass fiber is very often found in kindergartens in Germany.

However, care should be taken when working with fiberglass. When going to cut and glue them, it is worth protecting the body, since the micro-particles of the wallpaper separate during operation, fall on the skin and prick. Some people get irritated the first time after working with this material.

For work, you should wear closed clothing with long sleeves. You can also use a protective medical mask.

After gluing and painting, the wallpaper does not prick, even if the surface is rubbed with an unprotected hand.

Useful recommendations for those who plan to buy and glue fiberglass

If you just need to level the surface, get a fiberglass spider web - smooth, textureless. The density of the cobweb is different. If you are going to level the ceiling, take the thinnest cobweb. The cobweb is thicker - for the walls.

Glass wallpaper manufacturers position their products as "reinforcing and leveling material". But this does not mean at all that fiberglass and cobweb can be glued on completely uneven, cracked walls and ceilings. The surface must be prepared. To prepare means to putty and sand, if necessary, and then prime. It is permissible not to pay attention only to small cracks and insignificant errors.

If you want the walls to have texture, keep in mind that with each new staining, the weakly expressed texture becomes less noticeable. Choose wallpaper with a deep texture.

Adhesive for gluing glass fiber wallpaper and fiberglass spider webs is applied directly to the surface to be glued. Do not apply glue to wallpaper. Special adhesives are sold for fiberglass - buy them.

Water-dispersion latex paints are used for painting glass wallpapers. For the first time, pasted wallpaper is painted, as a rule, two times: the first time not earlier than two days after gluing. The second layer is applied not earlier than 12 hours after the first layer.

The choice of wallpaper for painting requires an attentive and responsible approach. Here you need to be guided by considerations of expediency. If you do not want to often re-glue the wallpaper, and you decide to repaint it from time to time, then you need to choose durable and environmentally friendly wallpaper that will not be difficult to stick.

The most suitable and interesting wall covering in this case will be glass fiber.

How are they made

The basis of the material is glass thread, which is obtained by smelting from soda, dolomite, quartz sand and lime. Made in this way, it acquires very unusual properties - it becomes elastic and at the same time very durable. For this reason, in cases where it is necessary to strengthen the surface, fiberglass wallpaper is often glued to the ceiling.

For the manufacture of wallpaper from the obtained fiberglass, cloths with various volumetric patterns are woven - matting, herringbone, rhombus, leaves. Then the canvas is impregnated with modified starch.

The fiberglass wallpaper itself can be made single-layer or double-layer. The latter have a paper backing. A standard roll is 1 meter wide and 25 or 50 meters long. Their service life can be up to 30 years.

Advantages

There are enough of them to pay close attention to this material:

  • being made from natural raw materials, without having toxic components in their composition, they are absolutely environmentally friendly;
  • the material, being fireproof, does not support combustion and, in direct contact with fire, does not emit substances harmful to humans;
  • glass wallpaper does not accumulate static electricity and therefore does not attract dust, being a hygienic and hypoallergenic material;
  • the material is moisture resistant, does not exfoliate. Does not swell or peel off when exposed to water;
  • glass wallpaper, having air permeability, allows the walls to "breathe" freely, while preventing the formation of mold and mildew;
  • the material is easily glued to any surface;
  • there is a possibility of multiple repainting (up to 15 - 25 times, depending on the quality of the wallpaper) without losing its appearance.

When buying high-quality material from well-known manufacturers, you don't even need to think about the disadvantages of fiberglass. But cheap wallpaper, when unrolled, can immediately crack.

It should also be remembered that for repeated repainting, it is better to purchase wallpaper with a pronounced texture of the pattern, since the implicitly expressed simply disappears after several stains.

It is important that seklovolokno is completely undemanding to the quality of the surface. It perfectly masks small cracks and potholes. With its reinforcing properties, the material can be used to strengthen the surfaces of old walls.

How to work with them

The technology for pasting walls with them is simple, but it has its own characteristics that you need to know.

  • It must be remembered that although fiberglass wallpaper appears to be the same on the outside and inside, it is not. They have a seamy side and a front side. Usually rolls are wound upside down. Wallpaper of some manufacturers has a gray or blue stripe on the back.
  • Glass fiber can only be glued with specialized glue for heavy wallpaper. It is based on the same modified starch that the wallpaper is impregnated with. The glue is applied directly to the surface to be glued (preferably with a roller). If it is very porous, then the glue can be diluted with water.
  • Before starting work, the wallpaper is cut into canvases of the required length. Wear gloves and long sleeves as the fiberglass crumbles when cut and can irritate the skin. For perfect alignment of the pattern, you need to make an allowance of 5 - 10 cm.
  • Compliance with the temperature regime is very important. You can work with wallpaper in the temperature range from +100 to +250. Direct sunlight and any drafts should be avoided.
  • The surface to be glued must first be primed. You can use a deep primer or a weak solution of the adhesive used for glass wallpaper. The strips are glued end-to-end, combining the pattern to achieve a uniform texture of the glued surface and tightly fitting the seams.
  • It is very important to wait until the glue dries well, and only then can you start painting the wallpaper. Drying time is usually about 48 hours.
  • For painting the glued surfaces, you can use water-dispersion or water-based paint with good wear resistance. Even before painting, you need to prime the surface of the wallpaper with a diluted glue solution. This is because the fiberglass absorbs a large amount of paint, so without a primer it will use up much more paint. Coloring is done in 2 layers with an interval of at least 12 hours.
  • If necessary, repaint the walls, apply new paint directly on top of the old one.

Pasting the ceiling

Decorating ceilings with wallpaper these days is practically not used. But if you need to repair old ceilings covered with cracks, it is simply impossible to do without glass wallpaper.

They will not only restore beauty to the ceilings, but also strengthen the base, preventing old cracks from growing and new ones from forming. It is not for nothing that glass-fiber wallpaper is recommended in seismically hazardous areas.

Before gluing fiberglass to the ceiling, it must be prepared and primed.

The rules for pasting are the same as for walls:

  • Wallpaper is applied from the wall with a window. The stripes are parallel to the window.
  • The adhesive is applied directly to the ceiling.
  • A dry strip of wallpaper is glued to the damp surface of the ceiling and rolled over the entire area of the panel with a clean rubber roller.
  • The rest of the strips are glued end-to-end. To remove glue residues, wipe the edges of the panels with a clean cloth.
  • If the joints are not quite neat, you can putty them, leveling the surface. Before that, the entire surface is primed with the paint that will be used to paint the ceiling.
  • After cleaning the putty areas with fine sandpaper, a finishing layer of paint is applied.

The use of high-quality glass wallpaper and adherence to the rules of their sticker for many years will save you from the need to replace wallpaper, repair the surfaces of walls and ceilings. For a refreshing renovation, you just need to choose a paint - and the new interior is ready!

Glass fiber has many advantages over other finishing materials. Fiberglass cloths have a natural composition, which means they are safe for all residents of the house. High indicators of strength, moisture resistance and fire resistance are ahead of other types of wallpaper coverings. The material is not afraid of sunlight and temperature changes, which allows you to decorate not only an apartment, but also a balcony or loggia, and the possibility of repeated repainting, if desired, will easily change the situation.

What is fiberglass?

Glass fiber - wall decoration material consisting of impregnated fiberglass. The surface has a relief pattern. Glass cloth wallpapers are made from glass blanks that melt under high temperature and stretch the fibers. Threads are subsequently created from them, and then cloth or fiberglass by weaving. Later, the surface is treated with an impregnation for the stability of the material.

Composition

Glass cloth wallpaper consists of natural materials: soda, clay, limestone, quartz sand. For transformation from blanks into fiberglass, only a high temperature, reaching 1200 degrees, is required. The impregnation, which is applied at the end of the work for the durability of the material, is based on modified starch.

Specifications

Types of fiberglass wallpaper

By invoice

Glass fiber has two main types of texture, smooth and embossed. Different types of wallpapers can fulfill different functions.

Smooth

Smooth fiberglass wallpaper is otherwise called cobweb or glass non-woven. This is due to visual similarities. In addition to the aesthetic function, smooth glass wallpaper also performs a practical one, namely, it is used to strengthen and level walls or ceilings. Smooth glass wallpaper will be a good option for finishing the ceiling, the surface is smooth and even.

Embossed

Another name is traditional glass wallpaper. Material with a higher density compared to smooth wallpaper. The surface has a clearly defined relief, forming some kind of ornament or pattern. This type of fiberglass wallpaper is suitable for the final wall decoration.

Mat

The type of texture has the name of the fabric, which is distinguished by a unique and recognizable way of weaving threads; visually, the surface of the fiberglass wallpaper looks like a cloth. The weave can be small, medium and large.

Rhombus

The weaving of the fiberglass cloth forms a diamond-shaped pattern along the entire length of the cloth. The drawing can be with shapes of equal or different sizes. Rhombuses also distinguish between large, medium and small. Visually, the wall covering is similar to jacquard.

Herringbone

The glass cloth has a zigzag pattern along its entire length. Like other types, the pattern can be of different sizes. Small ornament is suitable for finishing small rooms, such as a corridor.

On order

Today, in addition to the usual patterns, fiberglass wallpaper is made with other patterns, in production you can also make an individual order for a unique weaving according to an individual sketch.

By quality

The quality of fiberglass depends on their density, the higher it is, the stronger the material and longer service life.

By color

For painting

Glass cloth wallpaper for painting is made in a neutral color, most often it is white or beige. Such a background allows you to apply any shade to the surface without distorting it.

Colored

Colored glass-cloth wallpapers are not intended for painting, paint is added during production. This type of finish is suitable for premises that do not require regular renovation.

Pictured is a classic-style dining room. The decoration is made with glass wallpaper in orange tones.

By water resistance

When produced on rolls or packaging, the degree of water resistance of glass cloth wallpaper is indicated. The designation is in the form of waves. The more waves, the higher the water resistance of the material.

1 wave

Glass fiber is poorly in contact with water. The surface can be washed with a slightly damp soft cloth or chamois leather.

2 waves

They denote the average degree of moisture resistance of the glass cloth, the material better tolerates contact with water. The surface can be cleaned with a cloth or soft sponge and water or soapy water.

3 waves

The three-wave icon means a high degree of moisture resistance of the fiberglass. When leaving, it is allowed to use non-abrasive detergents.

How to properly glue on the walls?

Which glue to choose?

For fiberglass wallpaper, you need to use special glue, liquids for ordinary paper wallpaper will not work, they will simply be ineffective, since they will not withstand the weight of the fiberglass. Today in the building industry there is a large selection of glue designed for gluing fiberglass from a number of manufacturers, such as Oscar, Quelyd or Kleo. Their composition takes into account the features of fiberglass material, the mixture can be purchased ready-made or dry.

What surface is better for gluing?

Glass fiber must be glued to the prepared surface. To do this, it is necessary to remove the old finish and level the walls with putty, minor irregularities can not be removed. The walls are sanded and primed. After that, the surface is ready for finishing.

How long do they dry?

Glass fiber dries in average day - two... In this case, the temperature in the room should be from 10 to 25 degrees. It is also necessary to exclude the possibility of drafts or bright sunlight.

Preparing the walls

Before you start gluing the fiberglass material, you need to prepare the work surface.

  1. Remove old trim,
  2. level the surface with putty,
  3. seal drywall joints or small cracks with a paint net,
  4. sand
  5. prime with a roller,
  6. after complete drying, the walls are ready for gluing fiberglass.

Gluing technology

Before starting work, it is necessary to apply the markings and prepare the glue. The markings will help to stick the wallpaper evenly without overlapping the side. For this, a line perpendicular to the ceiling is drawn, which is measured using a plumb line or level. The glue will be ready 15 minutes after mixing.

Features of use on the ceiling

The gluing of glass fiber wallpaper is carried out according to the same principle as on the walls. Self-adhesive tape will help to check the strength of the old plaster on the ceiling.

  • The direction starts from the window to the opposite wall.
  • The glue is used only specifically for fiberglass, the other will not support their weight.
  • The glue is applied only to the ceiling.
  • You need to act consistently, the next strip of glue is spread after the wallpaper sheet is glued.
  • The gluing is done end-to-end, with an overlap on the walls.
  • The excess is cut off after drying.

How to paint correctly?

Which paint to choose?

For painting glass cloth coatings, water-dispersion paint is best suited. The choice is due to the absence of toxic substances, fast drying and the absence of unpleasant odors. Depending on the type of room, you can choose acrylic, styrene-butadiene or latex paint.

Step-by-step painting instructions

Painting glass wallpaper has a simple procedure. However, strict adherence to it helps to achieve an ideal result.

How to choose fiberglass?

Fiberglass wallpaper must be selected according to some criteria, namely pattern, manufacturer, class and composition.

  • The higher the density of the fiberglass material, the stronger the material and the longer the service life,
  • fiberglass wallpaper of lower density is not as strong, but has a low cost,
  • the pattern is selected depending on personal preferences, it is also possible to make an individual order for a unique pattern,
  • the more voluminous the drawing, the more times it can be covered with paint,
  • the ideal composition is a ratio of 70% glass and 30% impregnation,
  • the edges in the roll should be even, and the weaving should be neat.
