When starting a spiritual battle for a loved one, we cannot expect a quick and successful result: it will not take one day for sin and passion to take root in the soul, and it will not be one day for a person to get rid of passion.

We are dealing both with the sick will and nature of man himself, and with powerful spirits of evil, who have become accustomed throughout the history of mankind to quite successfully incline the human will to sin.

What you need to know when starting out

When you begin to recover the lost, get a blessing for this from the confessor or priest of the temple where you usually pray. This blessing will support you more than once in moments of despair.

Remember the great patristic thought: we must fight not against the sinner, but against the sin that disfigures a person. Remember the rather limited power of exhortations: both because of the peculiarities of spiritual healing (the soul is healed through cleansing the heart), and because relationships in the family are usually always familiar, and therefore our word has little weight (no prophet is accepted in his own country - Luke 4.24)

Try never to stoop to the level of conversation of a sick person, who may make harsh verbal attacks, insults, and the like towards you.

Be careful about the time and place of exhortation. Thus, during the period of withdrawal syndrome (hangover) or “withdrawal”, it is almost always unfavorable for a drug user to be brought to his senses.

Not every sufferer will agree to have their ailments become the subject of discussion in public, with strangers.

Look inside yourself: don’t you need to repent for the suffering that your neighbor is experiencing? Isn't this your fault too? Parents may recall that, as if jokingly, they gave alcohol to their teenage son or daughter to drink. Have you always been a model of sobriety or moderation in drinking wine? Is it because your spouse started drinking because you did not want to resolve the family conflict for a long time? Do you have any reason to repent if you, remembering only your own affairs and concerns, did not notice that your child has lost interest in studying, has become resourceful and cunning, comes home from a disco, from a party, with dilated or constricted pupils from drug use? ?

It seems that there is always a reason for repentance. Impose on yourself a fast, intensify your prayer, confess and partake of the Holy Mysteries.

Of course, your soul feels desolate when your efforts are in vain. Over and over again you order prayer services, akathists for the sick person in church, you yourself do not leave prayer at home, you endure hell in the house, and your sick person, as it seems to you, is still insane. And yet: remember that you are doing something blessed by God, and the result belongs to the Lord.

And don’t simplify it: you have taken on extremely complex work. You will work with God to save the soul and personality. And this personality (if we take the last stages of alcohol and drug addiction) may already be in decay, under strong demonic influence.

Demons do not tolerate prayer or sacred things. That is why it is sometimes so difficult to obtain the consent of a sick person to receive the Holy Mysteries, since communion is the most “great and all-powerful weapon in the struggle” (Righteous Saint John of Kronstadt). Let the faith not leave you that the time will come when you will be able to say: my son was dead and is alive, he was lost and is found (Luke 15.24).

About your prayer for the suffering

It can be advised (with the blessing of the priest) to read for forty days (the number forty is arbitrary, it can be thirty or fifty days). Then, within forty days, you can read the Psalter. After each “Glory”, ask God that your loved one, suffering from the disease of drunkenness or drug addiction, will be enlightened in mind and heart, leave behind the passion that is destroying him, and receive peace and tranquility. Ask for this in your own words or in a prayer composed by the holy righteous John of Kronstadt:

Lord, look mercifully on your servant (name), seduced by the flattery of the belly and carnal joy. Grant him (name) to know the sweetness of abstinence in fasting and the fruits of the Spirit flowing from it. Amen.

Some of the priests advise ordering prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of her icon “Seeking the Lost,” to St. Paisius the Great and to their saint. The note must, in addition to the name of the person suffering from the vices of drunkenness or drug addiction, also indicate the names of those who submit the notes.

Try, as much as possible, to have your sick person participate in your prayers to the Lord at least to some extent.

And one last thing. Do not agree with the crafty advice to cure your neighbor using the coding method. This treatment is occult, destructive for the soul and body, for the future life. A person may temporarily lose his desire for alcohol and drugs, this is true. But at what cost? It doesn’t matter to demons (the power that the encoding method essentially addresses) after encoding whether a person drinks or not, what is important is that he is theirs. “Code,” by the way, means “inscription” in Latin. A natural consequence of coding is depression, fear, and anxiety. Even the most well-intentioned doctor cannot take upon himself the sins of the patient, grant him righteousness (dispassion), much less drive away demons.

Remember the wise words of St. Barsanuphius the Great: “If a person himself has not worked according to his strength and has not added his own labor to the prayers of the saints, then no one will receive any benefit from the fact that the saints will pray for him.”

When you grieve for your loved ones, do not despair - from sorrow comes patience, from patience experience, from experience hope, and hope does not disappoint (Rom. 5.3-5).

If a person himself wants to be healed from drug addiction or drunkenness, he must say a prayer every day, morning and evening, for deliverance from unclean thoughts and bad addictions.

Are there Orthodox prayers for drug addiction? There are no such specific prayers. There are saints whom people turn to with this or that problem. There is the Mother of God; people turn to Her for help in any situation. And there is the Lord God. He decides: to help now or a little later.

Pray in church, pray at home. Don't give up and ask God for help.

Who should I pray to?

As we found out, there is no special prayer against drug addiction. But there are saints to whom those suffering from the ailments of drunkenness and drug addiction pray.

Ask for help from John of Kronstadt, the martyr Boniface, and the Monk Moses Murin. And of course, turn in prayer to the Mother of God. It is especially good to pray in front of the image of Her “Inexhaustible Chalice”.

How to cure yourself of drug addiction with prayers? Is it possible? With God everything is possible. But prayers alone are not enough. Human will is also needed here. In other words, the addict must really want to quit this business.

The ideal option to put an end to drugs once and for all is to go to a monastery. Live there and bear obedience. It will not just be difficult, but very difficult. Because no one has yet canceled drug withdrawal. At such moments, the addict experiences a terrible state and all thoughts are about one thing: where to get the dose.

It is clear that at the moment of withdrawal it is hardly possible to pray on your own. But this can be done by the one who is next to the sick person. Let him read a prayer against drug addiction to the martyr Boniface:
