Homemade winch with worm gear. Creating a homemade winch with a manual drive with your own hands. Homemade winch crane - two devices in one

The winch is an indispensable device, both in the household and in the garage. Raise a roll of roofing material onto the roof, throw a couple of bags of cement into the window of the second floor of a private house under construction, pull the engine out of the bonnet space, and drag the broken car itself into the garage ... This is an incomplete list of things that you can easily do alone with her help.

Drum-type devices for lifting or moving heavy loads differ in the way they transmit torque. From the school physics course, we know how the shoulder works. Losing in speed or distance - we win in strength. The phrase of Archimedes: “Give me a fulcrum, and I will turn the Earth over” just describes the principle of the winch.

IMPORTANT! When working with such a device, the fulcrum is the body and the place where the winch is attached. Both elements must be reliable.

A hand winch, with the help of an attached shoulder, increases human strength so much that one operator can move cars or lift loads of several hundred kilograms. With the same (from the point of view of mechanics) principle of operation, these devices have different ways of execution.

Manual drum winch - varieties

A hand winch with a drum is a classic of the genre. In addition to the common element - the pulley on which the cable is wound, the devices have different types of drive.

A large, main gear is firmly attached to the drum. On it, and on the mount, the entire load falls. Therefore, the reliability of the elements must be at the proper level. In engagement with the main gear, the leading small gear is located.

The ratio of the number of teeth is the value of the gear ratio. In other words, the amplification factor. The drive gear is integral with the drive shaft. Since we are talking about a hand tool, a handle is put on the shaft for rotation.

The length of the lever also affects the degree of reinforcement. The larger the lever arm, the less effort must be applied.

With the help of such devices, you can lift several centners of cargo alone or move a car weighing 2-3 tons. At the same time, the rotation speed of the drum is quite high.

The design consists of two or more pairs of gears, each of which has a gain factor of tens of times. With sequential engagement, these coefficients add up, multiplying the force.

The reverse side of the coin is a proportional reduction in speed. With such a winch, you can carry out a slow vertical lifting of loads of more than a ton, but if you have to work with two bags of cement, the lifting time will stretch for tens of minutes.

The winch is an integral part of any true SUV. So, a winch for UAZ and cars like it is a real helper in bad weather. But, what if you just need a simple and cheap unit that will help out a passenger car on a country road? For this, a do-it-yourself winch, both electric and manual, is perfect. Let's look at the necessary materials and the manufacturing process.

What will you need?

If you are interested in a do-it-yourself winch from a starter, you can get by with cheap and common options. As a power unit, a motor from an electric starter VAZ-2101 is well suited. They are quite common and are cheap, but they do not have much power, but for a small sedan or SUV, for example, GAZ 69 is enough.

You also need a shaft with gear and bearings, a piece of pipe for the drum and two round metal plates. You will also need sheet metal, various rods, bolts and nuts.

A do-it-yourself electric winch made is good because you can use a lot of unused and unnecessary materials for it.

Of the tools, you definitely need a grinder, a welding machine, as well as an adjustable wrench.

A winch is often needed on a long and difficult trip. If you're adventurous, you'll also find it helpful to learn about building an expedition trunk. Read this one. And for a fishing trip, you will need a trailer for a boat. Read about making it yourself.

Winch manufacturing procedure

In fact, the process of making a winch is quite simple, but it is worth sticking to the order so that you do not have to redo the same job several times.

1. The first step is to connect the motor to the gearbox. To do this, weld a tube to the engine gear. Drill through the other end and weld two nuts. Next, put the tube on the gearbox gear and screw in the nuts, which will serve as a retainer. So that nothing is wound on the shaft, it is worth closing it with something. For example, you can peel off a piece of thin-walled plastic pipe.

Very important! Before fixing, be sure to check that the gearbox is reducing rather than increasing the speed of the engine.

2. Now you need to make the second important part of the auto winch with your own hands, namely the drum.

To do this, we take a piece of pipe and weld two metal round plates to it on the sides, which will limit the rope. The plates should have a through hole through which we pass the shaft with the gear and weld it.

It is important to maintain alignment, otherwise your shaft will dangle and cause unnecessary vibrations.

We weld two bearings on each plate (but not with the inner part). Next, we pass the drum shaft through the bearings. To assemble the entire structure, we need 4 bolts, which we thread through the hole in one and the other plate, and on the other hand we wind the nut. As a result, we do this from 4 corners.

4. The gearbox must be attached to one of the plates so that it meshes with the gear of the shaft with its gear.

5. Finally, you need to make a frame. To do this, you can make a rectangle from square profiles and weld square plates to it with one side, as well as fix the motor and gearbox.

6. And finally, make the remote control. To do this, just one button is enough, which will close the contact. It must be spring-loaded so that when released, its contact opens.

7. Such a do-it-yourself car winch has one important nuance, namely, it cannot be fixed directly to the car. A fabric towing cable will have to be attached to the frame, which will act as an insulator. To get rid of this nuance, it is necessary to isolate the motor brushes from the mass.

Hand winch

A do-it-yourself manual winch is structurally similar to an electric one, so you can follow the instructions described above, however, instead of an electric motor, you need to attach a handle that you have to rotate by hand. Thanks to the gearbox, it will be possible to significantly reduce the load on a person, however, the power of such a winch will still be determined precisely by muscle strength. This is worth considering if you own a full-size crossover or SUV.

Now you know how to make a winch with your own hands. It has a fairly simple design and is easily made from common and cheap materials, which will allow you to make even a temporary solution at no extra cost before buying a branded unit.

Perhaps the invention of the winch can be attributed to one of the wonders of technology, along with the wheel. Such a mechanism does not need a special introduction; anyone who has ever taken a bucket of water from a well with a collar is familiar with such a device. They are used in various fields of activity to move goods. And in many cases, for drivers stuck on the road, a car winch, whether it is made by hand or purchased, installed independently or factory, is a real lifesaver.

Such a multifaceted winch

Such a device has a lot of different modifications, differing primarily in the drive used. Among them it is worth noting such winches:

  • manual;
  • hydraulic;
  • mechanical;
  • electrical.

In addition to differences in the type of drive, winches differ in the way they are installed and mounted on a vehicle:

  1. stationary;
  2. portable (removable);
  3. mobile.

Also, the transfer of force can be different. On this basis, winches can be identified:

  • with winding drums;
  • with friction drums or pulleys.

It should be noted that the first of the presented classifications is the most common, so it will be possible to consider the types of automobile winches indicated there in more detail.

Manual

A car winch of this type is arranged quite simply, most often the cable is wound on a drum or spool, through a system of sprockets of various sizes or a reduction gear driven by muscle power. What such a device might look like can be seen in the photo below, recommendations for use in the video

Mechanical

Do not confuse such a device with the manual mechanisms discussed above. In this case, a car winch is connected directly to the engine using a power take-off. One of its options is shown in the photo.

The advantage of such a winch is high traction and reliability, but it's a pity that it cannot be used on most machines. The fact is that only domestic military UAZs are equipped with a power take-off, and even some models, for example, Toyota or Nissan. However, it is worth noting such a drawback as the possibility of using it only when the engine is running, if it stalls, then such a car winch will not work either.

A photo of such a mechanism is shown below.

She has her own engine, hydraulic. And it is powered by a car engine. As in the previous case, this will be a significant disadvantage for a car winch; it will not work when the engine is stalled. The advantages include the high developed traction force, complete tightness and the absence of electricity consumption from the battery.

Electrical

This is the most common type among all used. A similar car winch, the photo of which is given below as an example, is installed on almost all SUVs that overcome off-road.

There is a wide variety of their types, differing in traction and price. The most common is an electric winch with a horizontal motor. In this case, an electric motor, a drum with a cable and a gearbox, most often planetary, are located in the same plane. Another option for building such a mechanism is a variant with a vertical arrangement of the motor. Its advantage will be a high winding speed, but such devices are characterized by a high price. They are commonly used by athletes.

additional information

It is impossible not to separately touch on several issues of using the winch. Firstly, it can be permanently fixed to the car, most often in front. However, in this case, its mechanism is exposed to dust, dirt, moisture, which does not benefit it. To avoid this, many drivers practice the use of a portable winch, usually stored in the trunk of a car and removed if necessary.
Such a winch can be installed not only in front, but also in the back of the car, as, for example, in the photo below.

To do this, as a rule, it is only required to install an additional platform on the bumper (front or rear), to which the winch is attached.

A few words must be said about how to connect to the battery. An electric winch is a powerful consumer of energy, and therefore, with its frequent use on the road, it can become quite real when the native “battery” is completely discharged. To avoid this, in some cases it is worth thinking about an independent battery to power such a device.

How to make a winch on your own?

The above information allows you to evaluate how convenient and useful such a mechanism can be, especially in an extreme situation when driving off-road. If your car is stuck, there is nothing left but to pull out, and in this case, a do-it-yourself winch made on the spot from improvised means can be useful. One of its manufacturing options is shown in the photo.

The basis is the axis, which can be a strong stick, scrap, mounting, etc. It is hammered into the ground or fixed in any possible way. A piece of pipe is put on it, acting as a drum. One end of the cable is wrapped around a pipe segment, and a lever is inserted under one of the turns, which can be used as a strong stick, shovel, pry bar, etc. The second, the end of the cable is attached to the car. So with your own hands, if necessary, you can make a winch from improvised means.

The above is not the only option on how to make a car winch with your own hands. There is nothing surprising in this, because such a device is very useful, especially for "jeepers", but its price on sale is sometimes prohibitive. First of all, numerous attempts are connected with it with their own hands, in one form or another, to make a home-made automobile winch.

And I must say that sometimes home-made mechanisms are very interesting, which can be confirmed by a video that shows a do-it-yourself not electric, but a winch on a wheel.

For vehicles operated in urban areas, a winch is an exotic thing. But for real all-terrain vehicles, for which off-road is their home, this is the number one thing.

And there is nothing surprising in the constant interest in such devices, as well as numerous attempts to make a car winch with their own hands.

The winch is a mechanism that is widely used in many areas of life. The principle of its operation is to transfer traction from the drive drum using a flexible element (chain, cable, rope).

Depending on the source of the applied force, winches are divided into mechanical and electrical. Both of them can be made independently with a little effort and patience.

Homemade ratchet winch

Quite often there is a need to lift a heavy load and fix it in this position.

This can be, for example, a massive cover in the basement or large parts of the car.

A homemade ratchet winch will help you cope with such a difficult task. .

Most often, for the manufacture of homemade ratchet winches, a worm gear is used from ZIL- it is the most compact and can withstand weight up to half a ton.

Ratchets from KamAZ and MAZ able to withstand weights up to two tons or more.

This is the most suitable winch for home use. A solid load capacity, if necessary, will allow you to cope with relatively large loads. By lifting or dragging them. Consider step by step the whole process of creating a winch from KAMAZ ratchets.

To make a lifting device of this type, you will need:

Two rear ratchets of a Kamaz car: left and right

Hooks for towing in the amount of 2 pcs.

Cable with a diameter of 4-5 mm.

Fist for expanding brake pads on a Kamaz car

Hook Bolt

Disassemble the brake ratchets by removing everything except the gear, as shown in the photo.

Next, cut off the pawl from the expanding fist and, using an angle grinder, popularly referred to as a grinder, cut slots identical to those located on the other side. The ideal option would be to manufacture such a shaft in a mechanical workshop on a milling machine. Do-it-yourself cutting slots will require care, accuracy and compliance with the rules and regulations for the safe handling of power tools.

Take covers from an unnecessary used ratchet and make two washers for a future winch.

Weld the structure as shown in the photo and drill a hole according to the diameter of the cable to fix it.

Install the ratchets on the slots, put the bolt and hang the tow hook on it. The design can be strengthened by putting a bushing on the bolt. I did this with a bushing from an internal combustion engine mount.

We install a second towing hook on the free end of the cable.

We manufacture and install a handle for the convenience of working with a winch.

We test the resulting mechanism. The winch is ready for use.

With frequent use of a homemade ratchet winch, the worm mechanism can quickly fail, in which case it is better to replace the gears with more durable and wear-resistant ones.

Homemade electric winch

A homemade electric winch will come in handy in the most difficult situations.

It will help to pull the car out of a deep quagmire, saving money.

Its work is based on the principle of using the power of all kinds of devices, such as:

— various engines;

— generators from tractors;

- starters converted to engines.

Making an electric winch with your own hands is not difficult. You can use it for housekeeping, for example, use it in the process of plowing a personal plot, construction work, as well as in any other operations related to the movement of goods. Consider a step-by-step instruction for creating this mechanism.

First you need to determine the necessary components:

Electric motor. For a home winch, it is not advisable to use a heavy-duty motor designed for a three-phase network. A small engine with a power of 2.2 kV, a voltage of 220 V is quite enough. We offer an electric motor more powerful than in the video. Practice has shown that a device with a power of 1.1 kW does not cope with plowing. And the 2.2 engine was tested at their summer cottage.

Electromagnetic starter PM2 16A, remote control, capacitor, wire PVA 3X1.5

Reducer 1:40.

Pulley (2pcs) and a belt for arranging the transmission from the electric motor to the gearbox.

Bearing 180306 in housing (2 pcs).

drum shaft.

Slotted part from the outer grenade (2 pcs).

Rolled metal products of various thicknesses and sections for the manufacture of the frame and drum.

Hardware for fastening the engine, gearbox and drum.

To perform work on the manufacture of the mechanism, you will need: a bench tool, a grinder, a drill and a welding machine.

Kinetic diagram of a winch with an electric motor

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the frame for the unit, you need to sketch a sketch of the future metal structure with dimensions. To do this, you need to take a sheet of paper and draw a frame, after which, with a measuring tool, remove all installation dimensions and plan the placement of the electric motor, gearbox and drum on the sketch. Simplify the drawing of the video posted above. Based on the sketch, it will be easier for you to prepare the necessary rolled metal and hardware for the future unit.

We weld a common frame from a rectangular pipe, on which we mount the electric motor and gearbox with installed pulleys and a screwed base from a profile pipe. In order for the belt not to sag, we make the engine platform on the canopies, then by spot welding we weld the canopies to the frame of the unit, as shown in the photo.

The reducer is installed on the corners. We put on the belt drive belt and check its tension. We weld the base of the gearbox.

We turn to the manufacture of the drum. We weld metal washers on both sides to a pipe with a diameter of 159, as shown in the photo.

Next, we proceed to welding and assembling the shaft. We weld the splined part of the grenade into the end of the shaft as shown in the photo and insert the shaft into the drum. We stuff bearings and housings onto the shaft and weld the shaft to the drum by spot welding. We weld the second splined part of the grenade to the gearbox shaft.

We expose the drum with the help of improvised means to maintain the alignment of the gearbox shaft and the drum. Next, using a corner, we fix the drum bearing housings by spot welding.

We connect the electrical equipment of the winch and do a test run.

If the testing was successful, turn off the power supply, remove the electric motor and gearbox and weld the joints. Then we put the winch mechanisms in place. We fix the cable on the drum. Install the tow hook on the other side of the cable. A homemade electric winch is ready.

Such a mechanism has a rather large carrying capacity, but it takes time to assemble and lack of moisture.

For safe work with heavy weights, it is desirable to equip the electric winch with a small and simple remote control.

Homemade winch for the economy

All kinds of winches are an indispensable thing for motorists. But a homemade winch for the farm can also be successfully used.

Here, most often, such devices are used to move goods on a horizontal surface, for example, heavy logs.

Often winches are used by farmers, installing it above the attic opening, thus moving loads between different parts of the room.

And some manage to use a homemade winch to plow the land.

To do this, it is enough to fix it on the edge of the site, hook the plow to the end of the cable and turn on the winch.

The mechanism pulls the plow, and the person can only set the direction for it. With the help of a winch, you can not only plow the land, but also carry out all cycles of cultivating the land

We offer a winch for homework, or rather for hilling potatoes on the basis of a grinder. Almost nothing is needed to make it. We present it as a modification of our electric motor winch.

When the engine turned out to be low-power, and while I had a new one, the idea arose to remake the drive. We decided to use the grinder. What came out of it is up to you to judge. We will tell you how the modification went.

Let's start with reworking the frame, the engine platform must be adapted to the grinder. Sheds and the original appearance of the site remains unchanged. The only thing it needs to be raised on the frame is the corners to give a stretch to the belt.

The grinder has threaded holes for attaching handles. It is in them that we insert the bolts to fix the grinder to the site, additionally weld the corner to the site, as shown in the photo and fasten the electric drive with another bolt.

Then we weld the corners to the frame and raise the platform. We put a pulley on the grinder, put on a belt and carry out an idle test. Next, we conduct a full test on the potato field.

Homemade mechanical winch

In emergency situations on the roads, a homemade mechanical winch will become your indispensable assistant.

It will not take up much space in the trunk of any car and will solve the problem without involving strangers.

To operate this type of winch, only your physical strength is required. A homemade mechanical winch works on the principle of a lever.

By exerting force on the lever, you wind the cable around the axle, and the longer the lever and the greater the applied physical force, the more weight can be moved.

A winch helps you cope with numerous complex tasks, so it is desirable for every practical person to have it.

But this does not mean that you need to spend a lot of money on its acquisition. The design of the winch is quite simple and allows you to build it from improvised means.

You will need:

- a section from the pipe;

- strong cable;

- strong stick

A piece of pipe will serve as the basis for such a winch, we fix the cable on it, and we make the handle from a stick.

If there are no suitable sticks in the vicinity, we take the second piece of pipe and make a handle from it. That's all - a do-it-yourself winch is made!

When force is applied to the handle, the tube mounted on the axle begins to rotate and wind the cable around itself. The axis must be securely fastened, for example, well driven into the ground.

And this must be done at an angle so that all the elements of a home-made winch do not jump off the axis during operation.

Homemade winches for a car

Today, bad roads, numerous pits and potholes are found everywhere, which makes it difficult for the motorist to move normally.

You can easily get stuck somewhere and hope for the help of outsiders.

However, it may be delayed, so it is better to have a fallback that does not depend on external factors and helpers. In such situations, a winch can save you.

Not every car is equipped with it, because high-quality winches are quite expensive, and those that are cheaper are short-lived and do not always have enough power to save a seriously stuck car.

That is why homemade winches for a car are considered the best option.

Such winches can be either simple and do-it-yourself in a maximum of 30 minutes, or more advanced, but also homemade.

Homemade winch from a car starter

It is enough to fix the winch cable for any nearby tree and turn it on so that the vehicle can freely get out of any marshy area. But if a jeep, for example, a UAZ, has the ability to overcome a crossroads without using outside revenue, then ordinary cars, whose owners often go to a place where there are no roads as a class, are not in such an advantageous position. Without the help of a winch, they will not be able to get out, even if they get stuck in a shallow puddle. The winch will cost a decent amount of money, but is able to pull a massive car out of the quagmire. Not every car owner can afford to buy a strong and small-sized model. A good way out of a difficult situation would be to make a winch from a car starter.

A significant number of cars built for cross-country driving have high ground clearance and a very powerful engine. This allows them to effortlessly overcome difficult road obstacles. But there are situations that despite the powerful characteristics of SUVs, they are still unable to pull themselves out of the quagmire. In order not to get lost in a hopeless alteration, such cars can be additionally equipped with strong electric winches at car factories, as an additional function. This greatly increases the chances of the vehicle to overcome the impassable off-road on its own.

We make a winch on our own or buy

It should be immediately noted that a home-made winch in terms of power characteristics is practically not inferior to factory models. In addition to mechanical, the winch can be powered by hydraulic and electric drives. But such designs are either laborious to manufacture in a private garage, or unproductive in difficult road conditions. In addition, mechanical varieties have excessively large dimensions, which will not allow them to be installed on a small car.

At the beginning of the manufacture of the winch launcher, it is necessary to prepare all the necessary components, which are selected in accordance with the design drawing. For a homemade winch you will need:

  1. The starter itself is powered by 12 volts.
  2. Reducer.
  3. Drum mount.
  4. Drum, for winding the cable.

When assembling the winch, the design drawings must be kept in sight, and not rely on your memory - oversights during assembly are not allowed. All the necessary tools are recommended to be placed at the workplace in advance. At the heart of the design, you can use a used or new starter specially purchased for this purpose. This results in significant time savings. We must remember that a heavier car needs a powerful starter. To increase the efficiency of the design, it is more reliable to take a starting device with a planetary gearbox. With a small use of electricity, it can develop a very large power.

Assembling a homemade winch

For many motorists, making a mechanism on their own is a big plus, since when you make something for yourself, you do it in good faith. In addition, its structure is also scrupulously studied, for this reason the driver understands well all the individualities of his craft, and will be able to repair it in extreme conditions. If the necessary parts are prepared, the winch can be assembled within a few hours, after which the testing process should begin.

The main element of the future winch will be a drum with a cable wound around it, for this reason its assembly starts from its manufacture. If it is not feasible to use a finished drum, it can be made from a thick-walled steel pipe and a pair of metal sheets five millimeters thick. Two circles are cut to size and welded at both ends to the pipe. It remains to fix a gear on one of the circles, using which a force will be applied to the drum to rotate it.

In the case when a planetary gearbox is used, the assembly of the winch becomes much easier, because there is no need to mount the gearbox in a separate housing, which is difficult to find. The winch on its base comes out high-torque, not heavy and small-sized. It is quite simple to mount it in the front of absolutely any jeep. Upon completion of the winch assembly, it is required to connect the starter motor to the onboard power supply. In addition, you need to carefully consider the location for the control panel. It should be removed from rotating mechanisms and closed as much as possible from dirt and dampness.

If a vehicle with a plastic bumper that is unable to withstand a serious load is equipped with a home-made winch, you will need to build a power element in advance and thoroughly attach it to the car body. Additionally, a winch mounting platform is installed on it, for this you can use a sheet of steel with a thickness of four or five millimeters. At the end of the markup, drill holes for attaching a homemade winch.

Installing a winch on a car

After such preparations, installation should begin. To connect each element into one assembly, it is necessary to use bolts with a diameter of ten millimeters, since smaller ones may not withstand the maximum loads. After the winch is fixed on the site, you should connect the power supply and mount the switch. He will have to carry loads up to ten amperes, because the starter uses a lot of energy.

To connect the installed winch to the car's electrical network, it is optimal to use copper wires with a cross section of 3 mm2. Such wiring guarantees a stable supply of electricity to the starter without loss. The switch mounted on the winch is convenient during its operation. If not, then you will have to open the hood every time and connect the wires manually.

Before using the winch for the first time, you need to check how firmly the structure is assembled. Especially if it is mounted in front of the vehicle. First, we test at idle, without load. After that, the car should be dragged along a flat, hard primer. And if everything worked out as planned, the winch is checked with a fully equipped car on good off-road conditions.

How to use the winch for a long time and safely

After the installation and testing of the effectiveness of a homemade winch, it is time for its intensive use. Depending on the weight of the vehicle, the load on it when rescued from swampy soil can be quite serious. To prevent the mechanism from causing injury to the user, it is most reliable to wind a strong cable onto the winch drum. When purchasing it, you need to make sure that its technical characteristics meet all safety requirements.

It is clear that when using a winch, the cable and other moving parts need regular inspection and lubrication. It will take a systematic cleaning of dust and dirt, which abundantly accumulate on it. During the period of using the winch, one should not forget that the starter is not designed for a long time of operation - you should not turn it on for more than ten seconds, followed by a rest of up to a minute. And also make sure that at the time of pulling out the car, its interior is free from passengers.
